Review The Nepalese Kitchen - Sydney

Sally Tang
First time for me to try Nepalese food. We ordered two curries, the fish curry was awesome but the lamb smell in the lamb curry was a bit too strong for my liking. The infused rice was interesting and worth a try. We went on a Wed night, no booking was needed.

Excellent ... with a ripp off Great food, but we paid $30 for a plate of what they call 'fragrance rice' (pretty much steamed rice with nice seeds and spices). Meant for 6 people (!) the side-dish was nothing but an average flat-bottom dinner plate filled to the surface. In fact we had to order an extra bowl of plain rice for 2 ($5) which was certainly more generous in size. As in many other restaurants, when you order 'collective' portions (let alone opting for a buffet) for a group you are more often than not set for a rip off. True, we said yes to the fragrance rice when the waiter asked because you do not think it will cost you a fortune to have some rice... sorry, with fragrance. Not coming back, thanks very much, just as well the rest was good and the company awesome.

The place is jumping on a Saturday night, loud, boisterous as its BYO. Floor plan for tables is very tight and I was asked to move numerous times so servers could get by. The service is poor- 15 or 20 until order was taken, entree arrived after mains? Basically, I took my girl out for a date (maybe not the best place for that) but aside from service and ambiance the portions were small and arrived luke warm. Plenty of choices in Surry; I cannot recomend the Nepalese Kitchen.

had a group dinner with 13 people. its was ok, service was reasonable, food is a blander version of Indian. its not bad, just the style of Napalese cuisine. keep your expectations low and you wont be disappointed. healthy enough overall, its ok... but dont expect a full on Indian tasting restaurant.

Had the most amazing food experience at The Nepalese Kitchen . The food was thoroughly enjoyable with all the flavours and spices which are usually only possible while in that country ,where I have been . The restaurant has a great buzzy vibe .The staff who are Nepalese are helpful with the menu .Overall great tasting and well priced ,my favourite dishes are the Goat and Prakash's chicken curry ,look forward to my return.

I went to those restaurants which have poor ambiance, smelly wash rooms, shaky tables because all it matters to me is food but when the food is a disappointment, then I'm never going back to that place. This place is a disappointment and one can buy a Nepalese recipe book and make dishes better than their's. In one line, it's bogan cooking a Nepalese dish. The only good thing about this restaurant is the ambiance.

The biggest disappointment was for customer service. They brought entree together with main meals. After waiting for bill around 15 min, finally had to go and pay near the counter where man (I assume owner) was terribly impolite (no hello, buy, thank you....). Courses for customer service would be beneficial for him indeed. Moreover, couldn't read the bill properly, so gave couple dollars less than was supposed. I just left it as tips. Would never come back or recommend to friends.

Venue is very cozy and food is delicious. Portions aren't that big though - especially for bred and entrees. Try the curry with mushroom or the one with potatoes, they are great!

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time, so I asked my friend to go with me on a Sunday night. We were welcomed to a table when we entered the restaurant, after receiving the menu, suddenly the waiter/waitress were all "gone". We can see that at least three tables( including us) were waiting to order food, but the staff was busy packing delivery/pick up food. The staff wasnt trained well, so we waited for another few minutes, and just left.
The whole restaurant has a fine look, as they had beautiful wine glasses on each table, while the price is quite casual. Atmosphere looked good.
A variety of curry, which is good to try. A good choice for people who love spices. Chicken liver is very very hot! Eggplant curry is good for vegetarian.

Amazing momo, good variety of authentic Nepalese cuisine. Liver is a must try on the entree. Small restaurant with great ambience, the feel of the restaurant takes you back to the country

Ordered one dish as takeaway so my review may not do justice... Will have to go there again for more meals. Ordered on phone with a very professional voice... Reached there and food was being cooked fresh and give in a couple of minutes. Flavours were good

The Nepalese Kitchen is an elegant ethnic restaurant on a three-storey terrace at Surry Hills. The restaurant serves a wide variety of Nepalese dishes ranging from khaja (snacks) to khana (main courses).

The spicy chicken dumplings is an excellent way to start my Nepalese exploration. The dumplings are chewy and flavourful although it can get a little dry. The chicken curry, on the other hand, is excellent as it complements very well with the long grained rice. Nonetheless, I would expect the dishes to be spicier and more intense. It is likely that they are altered to adapt to the local tastes.

The size of the dishes shocked me. I can't believe I paid $8 for four piece of thumb size dry eggplant, looked so sad in the container. The potato salad was a quart of the container full. $18 for 7 small pieces of chicken, not even half container full. I lost it when I saw my delivery. Will never visit again.

The Nepalese Kitchen has an authentic, warm and homey feel as soon as you step foot into it. The food was delicious and flavorsome. We ordered a chicken and lamb curry with the spinach and cheese dumplings to start. Was very pleasant with the dishes!

Food and atmosphere is great. However they starting cleaning/mopping the floor around us with what smelt like bleach while us and a couple of other tables were still in the restaurant. I think they did it on purpose so we would leave but it was only 9:30pm... was really bizarre

Location is great and really enjoyed having a quick chat with the owner about the differences of dining in Australia in comparison with Italy. Beautiful breakfast.

Located in Surry Hills the Nepalese kitchen is a nice but no frills restaurant. It's best to go with a group as the food is perfect for sharing. We had a range of curries including goat, lamb and a vegetarian curry with eggplant, potato and tomato. The curries each had a great flavor and the meat was tender however the roti bread is fairly basic. Overall we enjoyed our meals and they are reasonably priced. BYO only.

Entrees disappointing, mains quite good. Though some of what was ordered didn't make it to the table. Some dishes arrived and just got dumped on the table and the waitress herself didn't even know what the dish were. Not enough rice, roti didn't come to the table. Not enough staff rostered on to deal with a busy Saturday evening, therefore not great service. Disappointing overall, would consider somewhere else for a group dinner in the future.
Been here countless times and the food and service never disappoints. The dishes are here best shared, so come with someone or a group.

The Maacha Pakauda fried prawns entree are delicious, maybe even get two servings of them. Definitely try one of the curries — the Goat curry is my favourite and get a salad to go it. The Paratha and/or Roti is a must to go with the curry as well, and get a pick at least 2 Achaars Relishes to dip — highly recommend the Nariwal and Somar Achaars.

Delicious food and really cheap too! Also $2pp BYO. Really can't go wrong. I would skip the entrees. The dishes are quite small and not that great. The mains however were full of flavour. We ordered the goats meat curry and lamb curry. Both were great. The chicken was also good as well as their roti and fragrance rice. Best to reserve a table. Really cheap and decent price
Out And About
We enjoyed dinner here after getting a good referral and did not regret it. Great offerings for a very reasonable price as well. We ordered the mushroom curry and the eggplant curry. Both pretty good. The place was incredibly noisy though and it was hard to hear my wife. Outside a gentleman who had sat next to us made a similar comment about the noise. We ordered a chai but sadly it never made its way out to us despite a prompt over the course of the night. The staff apologized when I paid though.

Delicious food and great service. For entrée we had the fish and black lentil fritter with lamb - mains we shared the goat curry and the eggplant/potato curry and both were so good and full of flavour. Corkage was $2 pp which was a treat. Would definitely go back and recommend.

We waited for 50 minutes to get served once they seated the six of us. And finally, after asking the waitress 3 times if she could take our order one of us went to the counter and asked if someone could take the order for us.

We ordered a few entrees between us and a main each. To their credit the entrees came quickly and the mains soon after, though we had to remind them of the rice we needed to complete the meals and after a few more minutes they brought out one bowl between the 6 of us. (We managed to get a second as the one bowl served about 4)

Our table had no plates or cutlery, no glasses or napkins. We ended up taking them from a few tables around us after our food was brought since we weren't able to eat it otherwise.

The food was what you expect, although the 3 goat curries (their specialty dish) were just beef. Not sure if they made a mistake but for all three to be wrong was odd.

When we went to pay they said eftpos was down and it was cash only, then they tried to charge corkage despite not providing wine glasses, ice bucket or any actual service.

It may have just been a very bad night for them, but I would definitely not recommend this place in a hurry.

I tried Nepalese food years ago in Crows Nest and decided to try again in Nepalese Kitchen. The restaurant was very cramped and elevated toward the back. To start with we ordered dumplings called Momo, it was bigger than the Shanghainese soup dumplings, had doughier skin and didn't have any juice. The only thing I heard about Nepalese food was goat curry so we ordered that. It was ok, the curry sauce was a bit thin. Lastly we had a flavored rice with almonds and raisins with chicken curry. It was the best out of the three. We had BYO wine. Overall it was an average meal.

Went searching for a restaurant in Surry hills on a Friday night, came across this little gem. Delicious food, lovely service, plenty of variety, byo wine!

Loved indulging in this Nepalese feast with my vegan friend. Lovely staff, intimate setting and great variety of meat and vegetable dishes. Very well priced and BYO too!

Amazing food!! Fantastic service and cosy little setup that makes it a destination for all occasions. Had no idea what I was in for when I was taken here by a friend, she was raving about it but I remained sceptical as I have heard mixed reviews about this place. Suffice to say, my expectations were met and exceeded to the highest level. Everything we had was mouth watering and of the highest quality. The staff are attentive yet not intrusive. Highly recommend this place. Get your Nepalese fix ASAP!!!!

One of those places where I always feel like ordering only entrees, as they're different & delicious! Over many visits I've had nearly all of them. Favourites:

- Alu Chop potato patties with green yoghurt

- BBQ beef salad with crispy & puffed rice, & picked veges

- best of all, Keema Ko Bara, a crispy browned lentil flour kind of pancake with chicken, lamb or egg. Yum!

All the curries I've had are good, most recently the boneless goat & 9 different beans. For variety from curries, one of their best mains IMO - and I've tried most of them - is the marinated char-grilled boneless lamb or chicken. Heaps of places do this, but none of them as good as here. Make sure you order the fresh coconut & coriander relish with it!

The cold & hot drink selection is good, plus if you manage leave room for dessert, they include '3 in 1' pyramids of icecream - fig/honey/pistachio, rose/lychee/pistachio.

Service is friendly. Food arrives reasonably fast IF you come at off-peak times. Your bill comes with sugar-coated fennel seeds! Last time I was here, about $150 for 4 people who had 3 full courses plus 2 drinks each & left very full - great value for the enjoyment.

One of the best Nepali restaurants in town. Probably the best in eastern suburbs!

Good staff, great food. Authentic taste of Nepal and not too expensive on the pockets. The owner is a nice person, when in mood often gave us free beers and desserts. Too bad I am far away now in a different part of the world, but if I had to go back to sydney for a visit, I surely would have this place on my list.

Good times!
Ron
Very average food. Urbanspoon overrates this!. This food is very underwhelming.

Entrees are poorly presented with bland tasting dipping sauce. The proportions are small and insignificant.

The lamb curry was meant to be soft and tender. It was not. The sauce it was in had 'flavour' but lacked any real balance.

The 'dry' chicken main was poorly presented. Tasteless. The sauce was drizzled on it, but in scarcity.

I can only imagine the people voting for this place in favour of it have not experienced proper Indian / Nepalese food.

Best one. Its by far the best nepalese restaurant in the town. The food is amazing and the service is quite reasonable. A must go for Nepalese

Great meal for my return. I have recently returned from my Asian adventures and was amazed especially by Nepal .So I had the urge for a taste of my holiday , I chose The Nepalese Kitchen because of decore originally . Well the food just took me back to Kathmandu ,the spices and original dishes this can only be made possible if the Chef is using those same ingredients .Totally reminiscent of my experience in Nepal ,.The restaurant has a buzz and energy of its own ,the staff polite and helpful with the menu . For any person who has travelled it can be difficult to experience the food again ,well this place is the exception.

06 Monday Apr 2015 Vegetarian momos, $8.50 Soft silky steamed pastry filled with lightly spiced vegetables including sweet corn, spring onions and carrots, paired with a mild curry dipping sauce. Pastry was very thin which created a perfect pastry to filling ratio. Masu Ko Pulao, $18 I don’t speak Nepali, but I’m guessing it translates to rice with meat? as you have a choice between lamb or chicken. Basmati rice is cooked in a range of spices, it had a slight nutty flavor with a hint of coconut and lots of sultanas. Thankfully, the lamb curry compensated for the slightly dry rice. Lamb was very tender and spiced perfectly! All of this was topped with a nice minty yoghurt. The only downfall would be the sultanas, they were almost as hard as bricks and took way too much chewing. Eggplant curry, $13. Eggplant is very absorbent so it soaked up all the delicious curry, there were also lots of soft cooked tomatos that were really sweet and flavorsome. My go-to curry is usually Butter Chicken, but i was feeling sooo adventurous that i picked a veg option. It turned out to be amazing and surprisingly filling even though it lacked any meaty protein. There were lots of mushy potatos buried underneath with the eggplant, the firm eggplant went well with the soft fluffy potatos, I loved it! The dish is a little on the small side as I could have eaten at least another 2 servings of this, but nonetheless it was still my favorite of the night. Flakey flatbread, $4. This was to die for, it was like a perfect mixture of roti and filo pastry. It was thick and dense, slightly chewy but easy to pull apart and also flakey. It’s so good that you can eat it by itself or have it with curry.
Chloe
Slow service aside, the food was mouthwatering and the prices reasonable (it worked out to about $20 a head, and the dishes fill you up more than you think they would). If I were to return, I definitely wouldn't bother ordering bread again to sop up the curry. It's not worth it, especially compared to the rice.
Jobe
(A) succulent goat curry, an amazingly tender chicken and potato curry, a nicely barbequed beef salad and a nice eggplant and potato curry, which was surprisingly good considering I’m not big on eggplant.

Nepalese cuisine has always been an area of intrigue for me. I love that it showcases the geographical influences from China and India... It always tastes a little bit familar, yet different. I used to walk past The Nepalese Kitchen daily when we lived in Surry Hills, but it wasn't until we decided to move that we made an effort to dine there. It was one of those places that always looked too crowded to accomodate our spontaneity. Thankfully on this particular night, we manage to nab the last available table! The menu is designed to be shared and features an extensive selection of starters, curries, side accompaniments, salads, rotis, and relishes. My fresh lime soda ($3.50) is unfortunately more like bottled lemonade than a housemade concoction but everything else is absolutely delightful. We start with the maacha pakauda (4 pieces, $9) which is a choice of either fish or prawns, marinated in chilli and lime and deep-fried i

Old faithful. Had dinner there last week and as usual the food was beautiful, especially the goat.

Make sure you book no matter what night of the week and don't expect too much from the staff.

8.5/10

Amazing food, average service. Me and my partner visited this restaurant in August 2014. I phoned ahead to see if there was a possibility of reserving a table that night, however the person who answered was very rude and dismissive, I decided to still go to the restaurant regardless to see if this was a one off. When we arrived at the restaurant we stood awkwardly at the door waiting for someone to come down as seat us at a table which took forever, we ended up walking up to a waitress to ask ourselves. After we got our table the waiter promptly brought us a bottle of water which I always appreciate when going to a restaurant. After we had decided what we wanted it took forever for them to take our order and again I ended up getting up to ask if we could order. Despite the negatives, the food arrived quickly and was absolutely delicious!! We recommend the Goat Curry which is the signature dish, and also the vegetarian dishes are great of which there are a few. After a disappointing start, the night ended with us enjoying a delicious meal together. If you ask me, the restaurant would be much better if it hired staff that were attentive and engaging.... which is an essential aspect of having a successful restaurant. I give The Nepealese Kitchen a 7//10.

Lovely Experience. On a very wet Sydney night, we endured a long walk from our hotel to locate this place. It was well worth it and as it was only the 2nd time I had eaten Nepalese, I was again happy with our choice. We had 2 entrees and shared a main of goat curry which we struggled to finish. It was a lovely dish and the bonus of being BYO wine is always appreciated. 5 star dining it isn't, so be prepared to be cosy with other diners, but it fills a niche nicely. Great value. Well worth visiting again.

We didn't even get IN. Walked up there to try it out. Admittedly on a Saturday night so it was busy. Front door is closed and after catching the eye of a waitress, who was clearly uninterested in opening the door to us, she says "oh we are busy now" and looks at her phone! We left without further delay at this incredibly rude reception.

Had a lovely meal last night at the Nepalese Kitchen. Sunday night and it was packed - a good sign and well justified. The goat curry is their signature dish and it was sensational. Would also highly recommend the grilled chicken. Had several accompaniments with the mains, two entrees and shared a lovely dessert. All for under $70. Would highly recommend and will definitely go again. Yum!

Good Tucker!. I love this place (located on Crown Street in Surry Hills) and have eaten here several times recently. Some of the dishes are very authentic (if you've ever been to Nepal) and the dahls and other veggie and meat dishes are really top notch. The decor is not much and the tables are close together but if you ignore all of that you will have a fantastic meal there with value for money.

Washed down with a nice glass of Moet (BYO), which represented itself surprisingly well, the evening was capped off beautifully by the attentive, friendly staff who were helpful and polite.
I fully expect this place to go from strength to strength thanks to friendly, efficient service and simple, unobtrusive surroundings as well as that fine Nepalese cuisine. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Simply must try !. I dined @ The Nepalese Kitchen tonight with a group of friends, when I had a look at the reviews on this site I didn't have high expectations because of a few of the previous comments, particularly the last one because my girlfriend told me we would be having the Banquet.
But I couldn't have been more surprised, this is simply a lovely restaurant, we were seated in a charming private room upstairs, the service was friendly and attentive and the Banquet was fantastic. We started with Papadams and yummy dips the coconut & coriander was so good, as well as a lovely mango chutney. Then dumplings, a spicy beef salad and fluffy potato patties Then we had four different curries, the goat was so good, rich and delicately spiced, Smokey BBQ chicken, an amazing eggplant dish, yellow lentils with spinach and nine bean curry which was amazing,as well as rice and crispy bread. All this for $30.00 amazing value and a great way to sample Nepalese food for the first time. I cant wait to bring my husband back so we can try the rest of the menu.

What do people see in this place? I've been three times and it's always been poor. Tonight 13 of us had the banquet and for $30 a head I got enough food to cover the middle of a saucer. Unless of course you count the bowls of cheap rice. So called 'banquets' like this are a rip-off. We ordered a prawn curry among the dishes and there certainly weren't 13 prawns in there. I didn't get one, for sure. Miserable food every time. Won't go back again.

Little hut in the mountains. My wife and I walked past this place on the Friday night and it was packed out so thought we'd try it. We booked a table for last night but they turned out to be much quieter as it was a Sunday.

Great service. We were greeted as soon as we got in with a warm and friendly smile and taken to seats. Had our orders taken within 10 minutes and the food came out within 15 minutes. Had two of the vegetarian curries which were fantastic.

The whole place has a great atmosphere. You feel like you've been transported to a little out of the way hut in the mountains somewhere. Very cool!

Horrible service!! Had to go to the counter and ask for everything as was met w unfriendly couldn't care less service. Average food as well, better off going to another place...spend your money elsewhere w better service, food and atmosphere!!!
Rasathy
Very bad service. promised a group of us seats and after waiting for 45min they told us they don't have seats anymore. They thought people who had booked will not turn up but had so we we're told to leave.
Jo
All in all dissatisfied customer. I don't usually write reviews but wanted to let potential customers know about my experience. Went this evening with my partner and waited over 10 mins to order, waited over half an hour for papperdoms to arrive, then a further 10 minutes for two vegetable dishes. Our roti never came and the service was so poor. The food was average. I asked for the manager to advise how long we had waited etc, he said the kitchen hand didnt turn up and they were busy, he was disinterested in what I had to say and rudely walked away. The waitress took $10 off my bill. Two other tables next to us also complained. I will not be returning nor recommending the Nepalese kitchen.

Went with a group of 8 and had the banquet. Quick service, friendly staff, lovely food with delicious flavors. We all loved it

Great little restaurant in Surry Hills it had lots of atmosphere on a Saturday night. Only $2 corkage and the food was great. Get the chicken dumplings for entree. The goat curry was a highlight dish which was very tended and tasty. The eggplant was cooked perfectly with a perfect balance of spicers

Got my date randi. My first time ever at Nepalese Kitchen was my greatest date ever. I picked my date up at her house around 2.7km's from the restaurant and we drove straight there with little traffic. I knew tonight was my lucky night because i found a parking space only 200 meters up the road. We saw a chubby girl running along the way she had large features and a short netball skirt. We laughed, this set the mood for the dinner.
When we arrived I realised I hadn't made a booking but I highly recommend this, however we still got a table. Before we sat down i yelled out SHOTGUN which allowed me first pick of seats. I sat against the wall looking at the other diners. My date looked really happy and i am sure that me beating her at shotgun impressed her. Once i sat down i started to ponder if that 2.7km car trip was actually a quick flight to Nepal. The place looked fantastic and even the smell was authentic.
The laminated menus look great, all their dishes are written clearly in english with prices on the sides. We did not need to barter at all over price which was great and allowed things to move on easy and keep a good vibe.
My date and i then started to discuss the girl running down the street in the netball skirt with out a bra, we both agreed that she was very funny. We laughed more as we argued over her features being real or fake. I won this game also. This was the moment i realised i was getting lucky tonight and the food was still yet to arrive.
We decided to order momo, sekwa, tama and some other dish but i forget the name. We did not order wine because i believe the first time i get cheeky with a lady that we should both be sober so everything can be real. However Nepalese Kitchen had an effect on us both that no one could possibly plan for.
The food started coming out dish by dish and i watched as my date would eat and lick her lips with joy. She kept trying to peer pressure me into eating a chilli but i knew this was all just a trick. She was testing me like most girls do on a first date to see if i would give in to her pressures. I did not, i knew this impressed her more. We both love games.
The highlight of my meal was when the staff came to clear the table and i went to pass them one of the plates that had the lamb and as i handed her the plate i spotted a sneaky bit of lamb hiding behind some lettuce. I pointed out the lamb to the waitress and my date and told them i was going to eat it. I placed the plate back on the table and ate the sneaky peace of lamb. It was delicious. I am never one to waste animal. My date and i both love animals. Her favourite is the triceratops. I like llamas ( did you know it is actually pronounced "yama").
As the waitress finally got a chance to clear the table (with a smile) i asked or the bill. The waitress happily brought us the bill and proved the suprises were not over yet. We got this little silver goblet full of these tiny lollies. I am sure you would know how a jelly belly looks like a mini jelly bean. Well these lollies looked like a mini jelly belly but tasted like aniseed. I asked the staff about the mini jelly belly lollies in the goblet because i knew this would make a great first gift to my date to remind her of what a great time we had that night at Nepalese Kitchen.
At the dinner there was a couple sitting near us that both looked like brother and sister. From their body language i am fairly sure it was their first date. The boy did most the talking while the girl was doing this weird thing with her hands where she would hold her chin and her long hair really tight. If she did just one of those things at a time it would have been weird but both together was super weird. I was wondering if this was a came and she was testing out her new date to see if he would tell her she looked silly. He is not as good at dating games as i am. I first realised this because i knew he must have lost shotgun from where he was sitting. No one would choose that seat.
After we paid by card (they don't accept american express) we hopped and skipped back to the car and we flew home from nepal and i dropped my date off back home ending my greatest date ever. I highly suggest nepalese kitchen and hope you enjoy your meal.

Fantastic and very reasonably priced food. We are vegetarian and plenty of choice for us - 5 mains and 3 or 4 starters. Great flavours.
Rhys
Wouldn't know, never got there.... Would love to give this place a review of the actual food, I have been given so many good reports about it.

I dropped people off there at 7:30pm and went to find parking, almost 2 hours later, still driving around in circles in a 3km radius and still nothing, so I gave up and went to the rocks for pancakes instead...

Whilst I'm aware that we chose to eat there, they really have to do something about the parking around there, but sadly that wont change with Clover Moore around. For those of us who like good food but live out in western Sydney, there is little option other than driving....

Apparently the entrees the people who actually manage to get there had were apparently quite good though...
Rick Branham
This was fantastic. Our good friend is Nepalese, and this is very close to her and her mom's home cooking. The 9-bean dish and the potato/mushroom curry were not to be missed.
ALIX
Eat and GET OUT.... Food was good. However, the mains came before we had even finished the entrees.

Whilst there was a small queue outside, there was a lot of emphasis on us finishing our meal and leaving... The Maitre-de was rude to the point where he told me "you have eaten...so you can go..." This was after an hour and 15 mins of us arriving and about 5 mins of paying the bill (we still had wine in our glasses). The same thing happened to the couple beside us. I feel sorry for the waitresses- they seemed to be under the pump- with him micro-managing and pushing them to rush people with their meals and leaving...

To be honest if you are wanting cheap nice Nepalese- get takeaway- i would NOT recommend eating in to anyone....

Such a bad experience, which is a shame...
Julia
Hit and Miss. After having looked at the extensive menu and lovely decor so many times in passing, I finally tried Nepalese Kitchen last night. Between two people we ordered 2 entrees and 2 mains.
We initially ordered a char-grilled eggplant dish (Sano Bhanta) as one of the entrees, but it was unavailable so we opted for the barbecued beef salad (Haku Chweola) instead, along with spicy chicken dumplings (Momo).
In the Haku Chweola the beef was cold, the vegetables inedibly salty, and the "cripsy rice" chewy and bitter. It also did not come with the daiko achar described on the menu.
The chicken dumplings were good. The filling was amazing - spicy and flavourful, but the dumplings wrapper was bland and overcooked. To be honest, the tomato achar tasted like jar tomato sauce.

After these mostly disappointing entrees, I was starting to worry about what the mains would be. We ordered the house speciality of goat curry (Boko to Takari) and the Masu ko Pulao - a fragrant rice dish topped with lamb curry and mint and yogurt achar. We also ordered some jasmine rice and chose Paratha bread over the roti with the help of the waitress.

The mains were both amazing! In particular the Masu ko Pulao was a hit, with plenty of delicious currants in the rice to complement the ridiculously tender lamb and spicy sauce contrasted with the yogurt and mint achar. I highly recommend this dish! The goat was a bit tough but I suspect that is the norm for goat.

Overall, I enjoyed the meal and I would certainly go back for a second try with the knowledge of the first in mind. I would not order any entrees, as the are very small in relation to price, and at least in my experience, not very tasty. I would love to try many more of the mains, and would be interested to try more of the great selection of Nepalese achars available.
Madam Wu
Great for carnivores and vegetarians alike. Try the 9 bean stew or the goat curry. This place is old school Boho Surry Hills with the decor to match. Make a booking on busy nights or wait in line as they dole out steaming hot servings of everything on their long and varied menu. This Nepalese food is quite mild but delicately flavoured and spiced. There's a reason that it has lasted the test of time and continues to pack people in. Find out why for yourself!

Highly recommend. Great tasting food. Being a vegetarian, there was a fair few options. I went with the Dal Bhat Takari, 2pg of Menu, at the top.
Absolutely fantastic, great portion, lots of flavour.
The only thing I would recommend is to make a booking. We were told we only could sit for 1:15. After which, they, not very subtlely started trying to hurry us up. Which in their defense, they were trying to accomodate us with no booking, and still honour those who did make one.

All in all, I am going back there tonight!

First Nepalese I've had and it was absolutely incredible. Beautiful curries and flavours and well prepared. I expected, an wouldve been happy to pay more for it but it was very cheap

Give this one a go. We turned up at the doorstep at 6.30pm, rather hungry, no booking, and were advised they were pretty-much full. However, we could sit upstairs at a big empty table providing we'd be out of there by 8. Yeah, we could do that.
Having been here before (maybe eight years ago) we were familiar with what the Nepali eat. I'd say the menu here is a luxurious choice in comparison to the edited selection we had on our Everest Basecamp Trek many years ago!
To start we had the Keema ko Bara, an ordinary-looking yet highly flavoursome fritter of ground lentils stuffed with spicy lamb. Delicious. I could have gone one on my own.
On its heels arrive the gorgeous little Momo's. Steamed spicy chicken dumplings with a side of tangy tomato salsa. You can get these in veg or cheese & spinach.
Next came a very generous serve of Boko ko Takari - goat curry. Tender bits of boneless meat in a rich spiced tomato gravy.
My choice of main was the Khukura ko Masu - a Nepalese chicken curry, ever-so frangrant with hearty chunks of chicken and pumpkin. Yummo.
We ordered a side of the Alu ko Achar, a salad of spiced spuds flavoured with roasted sesame, tangy lemon, green chilli and earthy mustard oil. For $6.50 I expected a little more than a few mouthfuls.
If you're having a wet dish, don't forget to include a serve or two of the Paratha. This flaky, lightly charred flatbread is perfect to sop up those juices.
Book in advance when you plan your visit, and sit downstairs if you can. There's more atmosphere on the lower level. There are two rooms upstairs, one with tables & chairs, the other with on-floor cushions and low table, great for a private party
