Wow we order ordered three very good dishes! Kow tiao with big juicy prawns, vege tomyum soup that activates your taste buds! Strongly recommend golden sand fried eggplant (they do prawns and pumpkins too). The portion is big and it is super exotic with salted egg and curry leaves. Excellent and efficient service. The nasi lemak served with chicken curry and the roti served with beef rendang were amazing. The lamb ribs were over cooked and oily - hence I scored 4 stars.

Very fast service, the place is very close to my workplace so it's very convenient. I went at 1pm and it was busy! That's a good sign. I had their panang curry, the portion is a little small but it was quite tasty. Would come back as I want to try their laksa and other dishes

A great and convenient spot for lunch with friends! This is definitely a restaurant that’s value for money and pretty good authentic Malaysian dishes.

We ordered the Char Kway Teow, Seafood Laksa, and Roti Canai. The Roti Canai was so addictive and fluffy!

Authentic Malaysia food and it is really a good choice when you only want to grab something to eat!

Service is quick and the dishes are quite affordable!

Highly recommend their laksa! It's really filling!
Stewed beef is another good choice too!
Fired vegetable! I am a half vegetarian and fish-lover! so this place is a paradise for me

This is probably the best place for decent Malaysian food near uni. The Hainanese Chicken was good, the chilli sauce was just ok and the rice was pretty authentic. However, the soup was slightly too salty. The Green Curry Chicken was nice and authentic despite the staff appearing to be chinese?
Overall, they come at an average price of $12, and are quite filling.

This restaurant has been in my bookmark for quite a long time. Though it's pretty close to the Uni, I didn't get a chance to visit until recent days.

The restaurant is not on broadway, but locates in a square surrounded by buildings. It's a simple restaurant mainly serving Malaysian cuisines.

I came here specially for the Hainanese chicken. They offer whole chicken as well as mains served with rice. The chicken is not bad, and it's worth the price.

We also tried Angel Hair Prawn, which costs $26.8. The prawn is quite large and we enjoyed it. If you want to have a quick and cheap meal, Hainanese chicken is a good choice.

Definition of Cheap and cheerful. $12 mains and BYO. Food was fine - nothing special but good value. I would come back again. I had pad Thai and it was a little too saucy, not lemony and dry like usual but was fine for $12!

I was craving for Hainanese chicken and I saw the good reviews about this place so here we are!

I could not wait to taste it straight away so I forgot to take a photo of Hainanese chicken... oops! I found the portion of the chicken was a bit small but it was moist and juicy. I enjoyed the garlic chilli sauce too!

We also order the roti and Nasi lemak. Both of them were delicious. We could have it more!!

The food is 5/5. Next Malaysian food I’ve eaten. The roti canai was perfect, the beef rendang blew my mind. The laksa was he best I’ve ever had.

The service wasn’t fantastic, had to get the waiters attention a few time but for the pride and the quality of food it’s hard to complain. It’s BYO beer and wine too which is nice.

The Hainnan chicken rice here is really good. Especially with the surprising and random crunchy texture - I was told that was fried shallot - brilliant.
Rice was well flavoured as well, and the side broth , which I used to wash down every mouthful was the perfect companion.
$10 is great value, I can see why it's packed all the time. Friendly service, with smiling Asian ladies - don't you just love that.
Seating is humble but cosy.

Decent price and authentic yummy Malaysian food. Had their char kueh tiaw, Chi kut Teh and curry chicken and Wan tan Hor. They are yummy! Highly recommended!!

Went back again to try out their marmite chicken, ayam goreng rice, Nasi Lemak with beef rendang and belancan kangkung. Except for Nasi lemak (the sambal was way too oily), the rest were So yummy especially the belacan kangkung!

Tried their Assam laksa the other day. The soup was very sour and quite spicy. There’s only two small tiny pieces of fish in the bowl of noodle. I expected some sardine fish in it but there isn’t any. It’s not worth it given that the price is more expensive than other food on their menu and there’s no fish and other ingredients in the noodle. Won’t have their Assam laksa again.

When Paul suggested that we try this restaurant, I looked at my list of restaurants to try, and saw that it was on the list
for the last three years. Hmm, I can be a bit tardy. Also, lucky for me that he and Johny invited along two more friends since with Asian food, the more the merrier. I would rate the taste of these dishes as between ‘great’ and ‘effing fantastic’. OK, it’s a humble little place with quirky decor, and the service, though sincere, seemed a bit confused. And all the food came out at once, quickly, and with the entrees coming somewhere in the middle.

This is a fusion of Malaysian Chinese and Thai cuisine. You can find a variety of mouth-watering food here, and if you're not sure, go straight to Chef Special page. My favourites are laksa, roti canai with beef, and crispy egg salad. Each time I visit the restaurant, it is packed with people. So make sure you come around 6pm to avoid long wait and disappointment. Many delicious dishes are yet to be discovered.

This is a reliable restaurant. When I have no idea for dinner/lunch, I will choose Malacca Straits. There is no surprise to me who have visited them for more than 30 times. However, every thing here is at least not below average.

The owners are quite friendly to students even if they just order one dish.

They offer quite a lot choice compared to other Malay restaurants in Sydney. My favorite are the Curry Brisket and their dessert.

Yum!!

Ambience, decor and of course the food will transport you straight to the streets of Malaysia/Singapore. We had the hainanese chicken rice and nasi lemak, both of which were reasonably priced at $10 per plate.

Chicken rice was amazing- tender chicken and flavorful rice accompanied by a bowl of chicken soup. I wish they had included more vegetables, but that's just a small complaint.

Nasi lemak was also very good. The sambal was my favourite; the curry chicken came in big tender chunks, though the rice could have been more coconutty.

I know where to come the next time I crave Malaysian food!!

This is another place that I have had booked marked for so long but just never got around to trying. I feel like I've been missing out all thus while!
Got an invite to cone out for dinner to Malacca Straits and yes, it gave me an excuse to make my way here. Hidden in an apartment quadrangle with a few other restaurants, it's one of those places that you would've had to read about to know.
A low key Malaysian inspired eating institution with a mix of its neighbours influence. This hawker style food truly serves fast asian food that fills your belly with goodness. Don't expect presentation on your plate, they don't exist.
What we ordered for two were: Entrée- otah otah (a fish paste consistency) baked in banana leaves. I must admit, I've had a better version of this and it's terribly difficult to explain but truth be known, it's not worth trying here. It's generally quite spicy as well. We ordered separate mains. I ordered the prawn char keow teo and my dining companion had fried rice with salted fish and chicken, and shared a dessert chendol. It is shaved ice with pandan jelly.
This place will set you back about $40 for two with entrée and dessert, and with out it, you could walk away spending as little as 12 dollars. That's truly eating out on a steal!
This place really give you the feeling of eating late in Asia, in the midst of humidity. If you're cooking for one, this place is great for those who don't feel inspired to cook for themselves. The portion size is large enough, that you would even have left overs.

pretty good southeast Asian style food, always crowded, ordered fried rice and fried rice noodle, the rice is a little bit spicy but the taste was really amazing! The fried rice noodle was with 8 prawns and special sauce. The mixed entree included one spring roll, one curry puff and one fish cake, personally the curry puff was the best among these three. Anyway, price was reasonable and taste was impressive. Definitely will come next time!

Malacca Straits serves up tasty, average quality food in large portions. The floor is quite sticky, but the tables, crockery and cutlery are clean.
The chicken curry came with a large serving of rice, was well cooked and flavoursome. We also ordered a roti which was fluffy and crispy.
I wouldn't recommend the padt Thai which had a watered down taste so it felt like eating quite plain noodles.
The spring rolls were crunchy but came much after our mains and we were too full by then.
Overall a good value eat and a short walk from usyd.

We didn’t know about this before and we’re sorta kicking ourselves for eating crappy eats in and around the area when we could have been eating here. Welcome to our new favourite Malaysian joint. Malacca Straits on Broadway. Its actually a lot more like “Malacca Straits hidden in Broadway”. This is one of those eateries everyone should know about because the food’s actually pretty damn terrific. Discovering this now also makes us think, well what about that spice alley? This is now the new go-to. Hidden behind that stretch of shops that you’ll see down george/parramatta road (that all seem mostly unappealing) lies this hidden gem. Their $10 buck eats for lunch are all bangingly good and delicious and quite easily some of the most flavoursome Malaysian eats you’ll get this side of Sydney. Roti? Dammmn good

After a quick discussion we choose three dishes: fish head curry (a traditional Malaysian favourite); Ayam Percik Keletan, (grilled chicken with salad); and a side dish of Kangkung Belacan (water spinach), accompanied by steamed rice. The next night we ordered: silken tofu with minced chicken – a Malacca Straits’ original – which we pair with salt and pepper soft-shell crab. Delicious! Will gladly return when we next visit Sydney.

Ordered the Wat Tan Hor (Flat Rice Noodles in Egg Sauce) and Har Mee (Prawn Noodles) here. Wat Tan Hor noodles and fried onions for both dishes were nicely charred and there was a generous serving of fresh prawns and chicken for the price. But the sauces were a little watery and lacked the oomph of their equivalents served on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Service was a little slow when trying to fix the bill, though fairly efficient in serving the dishes. Overall: Food - 3, Service - 3, Value for Money - 4.

For a birthday lunch, we took a crowd of fifteen down to Malacca Straits to try some amazing Malaysian cuisine in good company! We ordered for the table, ordering two of each dish, and shared the spread between 15 people! Our first dish was roti with curry, which was lovely and flaky and a great accompaniment to all of the meals we ordered to share. We also got a vegetarian char koay teow, or fried rice noodles, which was a bit hit last time we came and enjoyed by vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. They provided chilli on the side, but you could use the sauce from the other dishes to spice it up!

A very decent Malaysian meal that I would definitely recommend! We had the Silken Tofu with mince chicken which tasted great! Golden sand prawns were amazing with the salted duck egg yolk batter texture. The beef brisket curry was surprisingly the least favourite of the dishes that we ate that evening but it was still a good curry with great flavour. We changed our boiled rice for chicken rice because we were in the mood for the chicken flavour haha. The Bandung is not traditional and tastes more like a candy drink (in a good way?) rather than the rose essence flavour. The cendol was not my favourite, quite icy and probably great for a really hot summers day - not as creamy as other cendols I've had in other Malaysian restaurants around Sydney. The kuih ketayap was surprisingly good. The palm sugar oozed out of the pandan crepe after the first bite and I was very happy finishing that up. Overall a very good feed and would recommend! Definitely coming back to try more on the menu soon!

I was quite delighted to hear from a friend about this place and how they serve quite a mean Hainanese Chicken
and being quite a fan of that dish I had to visit.. multiple times with different people just to share the love. I can vouch that the Hainanese Chicken here is great value for money. You can usually get a seat here but it does get quite packed during their busy times (lunch and dinner). Their location is under some apartments off the main street
so location wise I’d have to say they don’t get much exposure except for some small signs they put up on the main street to get customers but it’s quite well known and popular. This is a great place to eat.. I’ve tried some of their other dishes and most of them were so-so.. but I’d come here again for their Hainanese Chicken. The service is friendly enough and the place must be raking it in as the guy at the counter is wearing a Rolex.

Without doubt the best Malaysian restaurant in Sydney as attested by the queues of patrons waiting to get a table on a cold Monday night. We had specifically came for their highly-recommended fish head curry, which we had a few times before. It came out in all its curry gloriousness in a claypot, enough to satiate the hunger of 3 to 4 people. The friendly lady owner advised that they use cods as they were fleshier, which indeed they were. Just the tonic for winter, especially when partnered with Malacca Straits' okra blachan, silken tofu and Angel-hair prawn. But the star of the night for us was the honey-glazed grilled lamb ribs, a new-ish addition to their menu. They literally melt in your mouth, with an intense moreish flavour (eat your hearts out, Hurricane's!). Definitely a must-have on our next visits.

Today I’ve tried the marmite chicken, hainanese chicken rice, radish cake and chendol. Very good chicken and fragrant chicken rice. Ask for thick dark soy sauce to go with the chicken rice. Mix that little dish of black with the chicken rice chili provided, just the way the Singaporeans love it. Hainanese chicken rice is a dish that Singaporeans miss the most when leaving the country. It is a tough dish to replicate. Even with the same ingredients, it might not be the same. So far, I really like this one, and would love to go back again.

A hiidem Malaysian Chinese restaurant in lane way of Broadway. I have visited this place many times, before and after the change in chefs. This restaurant has a casual vibe, not hawker style but also not like those wannabe up market Malaysian restaurants which charges an arm and a leg. Malacca Straits is popular for students and local staff and one of the long time restaurants in the precinct. The Har Mee has a strong prawn flavour, and recommend the angel prawns and ayam percik. This chicken curry has tender pieces and strong aromas. The chik ku teh (which we usually order as well) is addictive. The let down is the rice - it's a big hard, but is ok if you eat it with the sauces. Overall recommend this restaurant for a casual lunch or dinner. 👍😋

Do not judge this place by its location (as it's essentially in a courtyard area of an apartment building). I'm not local to the Broadway area so took a chance walking here as I'd seen some reviews online. Boy did this place not dissapoint. The laksa at this place is so delicious, easily my favourite laksa in Sydney. I’ve previously read that this establishment makes their own coconut milk, which would explain the top-notch quality of their soup.
