Generally satisfies what you would expect for Japanese food. Tempura was fried really well. Sushi was fair (it might have been better if I ordered the fish sushi). It was quite a good deal as they both come as a set.
went for the first time recently and can say that I have found my new but all time favourite place for sushi! can’t believe how affordable the sashimi was, please do yourself a favour and check it out!
This place is around the corner from me and I only heard about it after seeing it in the “cheap eats” list, where they are renowned for their generous portions & tasty food. The boyfriend & I were super hungry and so we ordered the sashimi main, tempura main, chicken teriyaki main and the soft shell crab special. All of it was SO delicious and the portions were great! We spent about $35 per head and we could barely walk out as we were so full. We will definitely be back to try the udon noodles! Oh and this place is BYOW. All was yummo!
Food: sushi suma have been open in a small shop of Surry Hills and make sure you always make a booking before you go as the place are always packed with people. Food portion is huge and quality is good. You could always order one to share with your friends. Takeaway is not as generous portion as eat in.
Service: not for fussy people. Good but average
Price: very good for portion
Super affordable! They also split the sashimi platter we ordered in half so it’s split evenly between me and my friend. The salads are MASSIVE and pretty cheap! They also give complimentary agedashi tofu!
favourite lunch place, service has always been lovely and attentive, good value for money. comment below by Leo saying sushi had a slap of wasabi is presumptuous, traditional sushi in japan has always had a slap of wasabi and by no means it means the sushi is not fresh. dont think he's been to proper sushi places before to judge.
for 17 $ lunch menu you can get a sushi plate along with a main(beef/chicken/udon/tempura) a miso soup rice ,salad and a fried tofu. Service is awesome you will feel welcomed. Been there a few times and was never disappointed , one of the gems in Surry Hills. Taste is not mindblowing but its simple and appealing like your moms cooking. Awesome place who have an idea of what they are doing. Would have rated higher if I was a little older. Kate winslet of the restaurant scene.
I wanted to take my Mum out somewhere special for lunch and I’d heard great things about the food served at Sushi Suma. After a 15 minute walk from Central station, we arrived at the unassuming shop front and were seated immediately. It took a while for us to get our menu, and another long while to order (20 mins in total) but once we did, the food came out very quickly.
Consistently good value food and fast friendly service. Entertaining people watching the other diners too!
I have been eating here 1-2 times per year for over 10 years and it's always a cheap but tasty dinner!
Everything is coming in huge portion!! Valuable for your money. Taste is good but for Unajyu (Grilled Eel rice) is too fishy smell. But the rest are ok.
The portions are amazing, and are of great value! My partner and I always go for lunch to get the special which comes with a choice of sashimi or California rolls as well as a large plate of Teriyaki Chicken or Chicken Katsu with a few other options. I normally get the Sashimi set with Teriyaki Chicken, which is always juicy!
We're always stuffed at the end and only up spending $30 for a large delicious meal! In regards to the ambiance, it's normally very crowded at lunch especially since the restaurant is very small - we, however, don't mind this as the food is always great!
Been here for the past 10 years and I have to say I still love Sushi Suma! We normally get the Sushi Suma Set Meal and that's enough to feed two people, really.
Four choices of set meal to choose from, including Sushi, Tempura, Teriyaki and Katsu.
We just love the Beef Teriyaki and Tempura set meals. Generous servings with salad on the side. The set meal comes with agedashi tofu (in the most delicious broth), miso soup, fresh sushi and croquette as side dishes. And, dessert time is my happy hour. There's green tea ice cream for everyone towards the end of the meal (that is, if you get the set meal, eheh)

A MUST!!! 3 thumbs up! My last visit was September 2015. My favorite is their fresh and crisp ebi tempura! I've been to many excellent Japanese restaurants, but none of them have tempura as good as sushi suma's. The quality of the fish used for sashimi is incredibly good too and the best thing is that the prices are ridiculously cheap for what sushi suma delivers. I am based in Brisbane but every time visit Sydney, Sushi Suma is part of my itinerary.
Been here a few times. I find it's quantity over quality. Akin to Don Don but not as good, IMO. Nothing to complain about with the food but it's just average. Interior is so bland. No photos or artwork just bare walls. Always busy but I put that down to the low price
One of the best Japanese restaurants in town. Always my go to place for my Japanese cravings. Sashimi is always fresh, the agedashi tofu is delicious and pretty much all their chicken, beef and fish sets are all on point. And best part is the price is very reasonable for such high quality food and service.
Had the udon, salmon sashimi main, fish and vegetable tempura and chicken katsuserving sizes are generous for price- especially sashimi
menu choice is too limited i think and there are places in the city that are better value for quality- however not bad for surry hills
Food was delicious, generous portions, friendly staff and very affordable, byo too makes it especially good. The food was fresh and couldn't fault it. Make sure you make a booking as it gets very busy on a Saturday night!
To be honest a sushi joint on Cleveland st...? I wasn't expecting too much. But seriously if you close your eyes you could be eating sushi at sushi-E. It was melt in your mouth good!
The atmosphere is made even better by friendly Japanese staff walking around with smiles on their faces and in my case supplied a complementary agedashi tofu :-) which was really good.
The teriyaki beef dish was huge, and so, so good. The teriyaki flavour was subtle, so each piece of thinly sliced beef maintained a lovely meaty flavour - very good quality meat. For those on a low carb diet, this would be even better, it's not served with rice but with shredded cabbage and carrot, a very tasty match.
I am so full. And looking around the place there are a couple of plates on tables where people just couldn't finish it all.
And all this for only $16.80!
I have found my new best value for money restaurant in Sydney. Unbelievable.
What a nice restaurant, good food, good service. This place is definitely a good choice for a Saturday night feed with good friends. I can assure you won't leave hungry, good food in large quantities (portions are quite big but who's complaining right?). And the best part: all for such for a reasonable price (I'm young this is what I look for 😊). I had the Sashimi and Sushi Combination and it was good, fresh and plentiful. Lost 1.5 because the seats weren't the nicest to sit on and the menu is quite limited and simplistic. Overall a good experience.
Great food & great value! Came here for lunch with my mum the other day. We ordered two combination sets and a salad. We were too stuffed to finish everything so we took it home for dinner. Thanks for the friendly service
I've been visiting Sushi Suma for almost 25 years. I remember when it was still this dinky little sushi bar with hordes of people waiting outside to be fed. It was horribly uncomfortable back in the day. The seating was ultra squishy and the place got really loud because the kitchen was right in the face of the customers so we could hear the chefs screaming orders at each other. I think regulars welcomed the renovation which happened about eight years ago. These days, the restaurant is way more spacious, the kitchen has been moved out back and you can hear yourself and your friends/family talk. Back in the day we reasoned Sushi Suma was only a place to get food, not a place to eat, relax and chat. But now, you can even take your time to eat. Well, sometimes, if the place isn't too packed!
Management has changed many, many times over the years and with the changes the quality of the food has fluctuated between good and great. It has NEVER been bad. Despite the ups and downs, regulars like myself have been loyal. Value is king in this game and the quantity you get for the amount you pay is frankly ridiculous. Upon visiting the first time, a friend once asked me, "How do they make a profit giving you so much food for so little money?"
Consider the dinner sets - for a measly $34.80 you can comfortably feed 3 people. A sushi dinner set comes with sushi platter, chicken skewers (yakitori), sashimi platter, agedashi tofu, miso soup, rice AND green tea ice cream. How about the katsu dinner set? A monster plate of crumbed pork (katsu), chicken skewers (yakitori), sashimi platter, agedashi tofu, miso soup, rice AND again green tea ice cream. See the pattern? More than you can eat. A super bargain as far as Japanese food goes. My personal favourites have to be the sashimi salad ($14.80), California roll (6 pcs for $8.80, 8pcs for $11.80) and sushi deluxe platter ($16.80). Fish is fresh, salads are fresh, rice is well cooked, well seasoned. Everything tasty. It's not the top-of-the-top-of-the-top Japanese food and you won't see any exotic fish like engawa or shellfish such as scallops or sea urchin but it's the perfect place to get a fix for the staples like salmon, kingfish and tuna.
Because Sushi Suma is a turnover reliant business, service has always been lightning fast, almost whirlwind style but it's always been polite in that Japanese way. They aim to please and make their customers happy which is always a good thing. And did I mention the portions are massive? Sushi Suma is reliable as ever
Value for money! For $19 you get a combination of sushi or sashimi and a series of meat to choose from, plus you get agedashi tofu for free! Definitely worth a try and the staff there are friendly!
Love this place. We dropped in for an early dinner after a year or so since the last time we had been. Food was fantastic as always and service is friendly and prompt. They even threw in a free green tea ice cream. My only gripe is that they are closed on Mondays!
Extremely good value, one of the best value restaurant in Sydney! But if you are looking for fancy exotic Japanese banquet, this is not the place for you, Suma strives to provide good quality everyday-Japanese food experience at affordable prices. It's one of the place you know you'll get good tucker, satisfying your hunger and won't break your wallet! I always order the lunch combination, $15 includes ageshi tofu, sushi entree, miso soup and pork katsu with rice for main. Can't ask for more at this price range!
Delicious. Worth every penny and not that expensive. I wasnt that hungry so i ordered edamame and 8 pieces of california roll. I thought they'd be small but they were huge and obly $11.80 super cheap. Edamame was delicious. The noodle that they serve was also delicious and they also give us some fried tofu. I loved it.
It gets insanely busy in this little Japanese restaurant during dinner and it’s easy to see why. Reasonable prices and large servings. Granted the reason why the portions look so large is because of how much shredded cabbage is provided with each main. Hint: there’s a lot. Complimentary Appetisers of agedashi tofu and vermicelli noodle salad is provided to every person. The salad is lightly seasoned with a sweet, vinegary taste.
Best value you can find, massive portions with very low prices. We were so stuffed after ordering 3 mains and 2 entrees for 4 people. Huge neighborhood gem. Food was decent, sushi and Sashimi were fresh, although they don't have a big variety of fish, just very common ones, e.g King fish, salmon and tuna. Make sure you book, they can get very busy in the weekends. Downside, they do BYO only.
The venue could do with a little refresh, however don't let the appearance fool you. This place is INCREDIBLE value for money. It's one of my regular Menulog delivery options, food is always fast, fresh and tasty. Four of us dined here last night (Saturday), all boys who like to eat - the bill was less than $68 for the four of us, including a couple of drinks (they aren't licenced - BYO only). Recommended - brilliant value for money.
Great casual spot to dine in on a late Sunday night. I was with 4 friends and we all wanted something light to eat so we ordered the sushi dinner, age-gyoza and yakiniku to share. Oh and some edamame - I can't eat at a Jap place and not order that! It was perfect, servings were all quite generous so we were all satisfied. Then the waiter served our ice cream which we had completely forgotten about - it was actually included in the sushi dinner set! If I lived in the area, I'd definitely be a regular here
This restaurant doesn't look like a nice place BUT don't let appearances deceive you!! I am a person that is not particularly fuzzy or elitist with food, I enjoy good food and good portions. So if you can relate, then Sushi Suma is the place for you. Sashimi, sushi, tempura, they are all great in taste and even better in portion!
Been coming here for years. Always packed, which is a good sign. The seaweed salad is massive! The food is great quality and always tasty. Very affordable.
Fast service, huge portions, good food and cheap cheap cheap. Sushi Suma has been doing this for over 20 years and they still know how to feed you well for little money
I consistently return to this place. Their food is consistently fresh and delicious with swift service. Super cheap as well especially their lunch combinations - $15!
Cheap, reliable favourite. Love this place for cheap, generous and reliable meals. One "dinner set" is usually enough for 2 (perhaps with an extra entree). Love the sashimi salad (it's HUGE) and katsu.
The best Japanese in Sydney. I have dined at Suma for nearly seven years (even prior to it moving two doors down) and always leave with the same grin and full belly. I've been in groups as small as two and as big as eight, and the service is always on point and the food is fast and incredibly delicious.
When I branch out to other Japanese restaurants in Surry, Darlinghurst, Paddo or Newtown, I end up comparing it to Suma and being a little let down. Sushi Suma is incredible value for money, fresh, fast and even better, BYO. The staff don't try and get rid of you when the meals are done, and are always friendly and polite with new and old customers. The trick is to get in early or make a booking as the small space fills up fast, and groups usually settle in for the night on a week night (well we do atleast.
Highlights are the chicken katsu or beef terriyaki meal sets, the agedashi tofu (that sauce!), tempura and the small bowl of starter noodles on the table when you arrive and the red bean and green tea ice cream to finish. Its basically the only Japanese I've found as authentic and hearty as the meals you find in the hidden laneways of Japan with cute and hilarious staff that make the experience so worthwhile.
If we’re having a “value for money” competition for all the restaurants in Sydney, Sushi Suma will definitely make the top of my list. The value comes from the authentic taste and high quality that’s un-compromised by the generous portion of servings. We walk in Sushi Suma starving and walk out utterly satisfied, every, single, time. This is the Chef’s Suggestion (dinner) menu I downloaded from there website. We always order these sets as they represent the most value. The choices on the Chef’s Suggestion menu include a great combination of food that makes everyone happy. My favourite is the teriyaki beef set. If you ask the waitress, she will tell you one Chef’s Selection set is usually shared between two people. However, from experience, the food is plenty for 3 girls to share. During our most recent visit, we had two guys and two girls, so we ordered one Chef’s Selection set + one udon + one kaiso salad + one yakitori + sashimi main (for the record, we ordered way too much because we were starving). One thing you will grow to love Sushi Suma is their generosity. The Chef’s Selection menu shows one single agedashi tofu and ice-cream in the picture, however, they were kind enough to give us 4 of each so we don’t have to fight over them!
Since the menu made it clear that set meals were better value we decided to go with a set meal each, Mr C went with the Teriyaki Chicken which was surprisingly tender but a little too smothered in teriyaki sauce which made it overpoweringly sweet. Complimentary Starter This was given as a complimentary starter after we ordered. It’s a cold and tangy vermicilli dish which has a refreshing crisp taste, especially with the slices of vegetables mixed in. Agedashi Tofu Who doe
We managed to finish all but the rice where the eel sat, and were completely stuffed for a mere $22 a head. Pretty cheap, and highly recommended.
Whether you are after tempura, udon, teriyaki or like myself, fresh sashimi, Sushi Suma will cater for it and all at a reasonable price.
The sashimi is first to arrive and it is so lovely and fresh. The salmon practically melts in my mouth. I have to say it is some of the best salmon sashimi I remember having and I can see why people rave about this place (whilst in the same breath hate th
Cheap and tasty. Take a doggy bag. One banquet and extra rice for two and we still cannot eat it all. Great value.
Fave Japanese. Our favorite Japanese in the area, fills up quick, large portions, love it!
Big enough for 2. I have been here a few times and while the pride on the menu for a set seems high, the servings are large so you can share between two. Upstairs tends to be more noisy as there are larger tables/groups. Staff are efficient and food comes out fast.
Fav. Love it, cheap, big serving, can eat there every day.......
I have been eating here for ten years. A great place for tasty well priced Japanese. Try it you won't be disappointed, but be warned ... There might be a queue and you may have to wait for a table, but well worth it
Great food and staff. Love this place. Such fresh tasty Sushi and great price point. Usually have the Teriyaki beef or chicken which is a huge serving size. Service is fast and efficient! Seems to be full of locals whatever night of the week you go which is always a good sign.
I ve been here for many times and always satisfied with the food and service! Their teriyaki dinner package is highly recommended. Their food is just amazing and fresh!
One of the best. For it's price range you can't go past Sushi Suma. Japanese family and friends go here all the time.
Cheap and cheerful. The sashimi is generous and great as is their free agedashi tofu but stay away from the chicken yakitori skewers. The ambiance is poor, and service is average, if they made this place up a little it would be a much more exciting experience.
Good food, cheap prices. It's no frills Japanese for Sydney-siders. The sashimi is great value. We had to wait a little while upstairs, but they gave us a ticket and came to find us. The service is hurried, but one waitress for 20 pax is a lot. Free agadashi. Just stick to sushi.
Yum. Great food & very reasonable price
Cheap and Delicious. Get in at midday on weekdays for the amazing lunch specials - $14.90 for more food than you can eat, with melt in your mouth fresh sashimi and deliciously light tempura among many others. Love this place, make it a regular outing!

Got Fish?. So after reading several reviews about this place on how terrible the service and how long the wait is we decided to try our luck...
We arrived at the peak of hunger hour around 7pm on a Saturday night and we were seated straight away. Our order was taken straight away. Our food came rather quickly. I know right...so far so good.
We ordered the tempura dinner. Awesome... The sashimi was fresh, the tofu was moth watering and tempura just yum...Again so far so good.
Now this is where things start to get interesting... It took the staff 10-15 minutes notice that we were done and after asking for the bill it took them 15-20 mins to give it to us. After all that they gave us a pathetic excuse for a dessert which, was rock solid ice cream rolled corn flakes with a plastic flimsy spoon to chisel away at the ice cream
For what you pay its freaking awesome, but if service is your thing, I'd stay away....
Why complain about waiting??. Guys, this sushi restaurant is great! the food is yummy and so very fresh. the servings are huge and the free agadshi tofu is to die for! you don't get all this without having to wait for a table. get over it Sydney! Sushi suma, I heart you!
Delicious and value for money!!. If only i lived closer and it was easier to find parking i would move into this restaurant to have delicious japanese food every night. very fresh satisfying servings. yum!
Great Japanese Food .... But .... the service is APPALING! There is a terrible little Japanese man with an electronic note pad who may or may not seat you, or assign you in an upstairs holding pen to be forgotten. He grunts instructions at you, and huffs & puffs as he takes your food order. VERY RUDE & OFFPUTTING
Sushi karma. Maybe it's because of karma that we didn't have to wait on a Saturday night. Perhaps word has spread about the bad service to the point where people don't come here as much. Rocked up at 6.15 on a Saturday night and there was no wait and also tables around us that were empty even until 8pm when we left. It's an undeniable bargain. May not be the best sushi and sashimi in town but it's still very good and the dinner sets are astonishing value. That alone is enough to entice you.
Great value. Love the food, love the price. A little bit too noisy and the queue was long when we went there for dinner
Great fresh food and quick service, though they do expect you to leave once you have finished. To avoid long waits arrive at six pm
Who cares about the so-so service!!??. I don't care that I have to wait for a table, or that the Sushi Suma Manager has no character at all. (I dare you to try and make him smile!) I LOVE Sushi Suma. No matter what you order, the portions are positively large. The Tempura is fresh and crisp. The Sushi and Sashimi is some of the best Sydney has to offer. The service is so-so but I really don't care - I still get my meal, it's delicious, there's just no eye contact with staff.
Oh! And you have to have the green tea ice-cream that's topped with a sweet red bean paste and japanese style cornfakes. Yum Yum.
Enormous portions, tastey, amazing value lunch deal, packed so sometimes patchy service. Highly recommended.
Great restaurant, awesome food, so cheap! The service is always good too, but a lot of people don't understand the genius system the restaurant uses to feed as many as they do each night. If it's your first time head straight upstairs and then ask someone (not staff) how the system works. It's worth it!
Ridiculously cheap, great food and big portions but don't expect any service, it's noisy and be prepared to wait for a table. If you don't mind that, you'll have a great meal!
Excellent food for the price but expect no service whatsoever. They don't care if you're not happy has they're plenty of other people queuing up to eat. The Asian waiter is like the guy from seinfield soup Nazi
Friendly service. Good quality food although priced a bit higher than the Japanese we go normally. The sushi and sashimi combo was $28.80. The other dinner combo was $26.50 sushi with fish katsu combo which didn't have rice or miso soup that people normally would expect.
Sushi Suma seems to be a popular place for lunch with its set menus. The photos of the old menu is confusing because indeed the place has no more sushi "train". For the dinner option the sushi set seemed like a good choice. However the prawn roll was not that tasty in comparison to some other sushi we've had in Surry Hills. The price is also medium to high for a place like this. Overall good quality but better sushi to be had around this area.
Amazing service, great fresh food and value for money! Definitely one of the best japanese food places around.
just reopening after covid. we went soooo many times when we lived in Surrey Hills. Will be great for it to be busy again. Dishes were good and am sure they will get back to their previous 'jam packed' standard.
Decent food for its portion and price though there are better options across the bridge.
Whoever asks for vegetarian option at this traditional Japanese restaurant, got rejected and couldn’t get over it is a typical inner city entitled moron who thinks they are better than everyone else. Can they even afford property on their own in this particular area? I don’t think so.
Excellent fresh Sushi, Sashimi along with tasty Chicken Teriyaki and amazing California Rolls. Incredible value with hearty portion sizes and friendly service. Can be crowded and busy so book or go outside peak times.
Reasonably priced and good food here! Little tip, if the waitress says a dish is for 2 people to share, trust him/her. We made a mistake in ordering too much but very happy with the consequences. Also they have great service, would come back again.
