Review Rey's Place - Sydney

Lina Taing
Small place, but nice ambience. Good service, with tasty food to suit. Excuse me for not noting down or remembering the name of the dishes... I let my date take charge and order the dishes. The salmon ceviche dish was really tasty and would definitely recommend. The chicken skin was also super yummy. The sauce of the pork with crackling pairs perfectly with the dish. We tried all 3 desserts; green mango jack fruit gelato was really good, donut was freshly warm and crunchy were delicious, but my favourite was the banana spring rolls with ube ice cream. That ice cream was so good and even went well with the donuts. Want to come back again to try more of the menu!

We wanted to try this Filipino restaurant as there are not a lot in Sydney. Owner is friendly and accommodating and there is a good ambiance however the food was not as expected. Servings were small and price was high. I do recommend the lechon and the chicken chicharon and the kinilaw however we also ordered the squid. That was a bit strange like not cooked and slimy and cold for something that was meant to be grilled / bbq - not sure what was going on there.

Came here for my Friends Birthday this place is better than the place that i have been with al filipino restos around. Was just dissapointed with lechon and pinakbet it was ok. But crispy chicken wings is a must and adobo. ---used to be good. They got rid of adobo. Came here same reason last year but won't come back again. Not worth it

What an absolute treat to find another Filipino restaurant. It's a nice little place in darlinghurst. It's not an easy place to go to if you are coming from the city so you have to book prior to ensure you have a seat. The place is cozy and quiet and is enough for small groups of 4 people. I felt the place has not enough lighting given that the street is already dark. The staff is friendly but he's the only staff serving everyone. There is a bit of waiting between the starters and the main, which is almost like 30mins so you have to put that into consideration. We tried the salmon kilawin and the chicken chicharon and I can definitely recommend them for starters. We had lechon and chicken adobo and for me, this is where it missed a little bit. I guess having Filipino food for most of my life, I had a different expectation. Overall, it's a place you should try but it would be up to you if you want to come back. I'll try the desserts next time and maybe try out other main dishes.

The only Filipino fine dining in Sydney that matters. Lechon, pinakbet was great. The adobo was sweet but good - more of a preference. They got the ambiance right - which some older Filipinos probably wouldn't like. Overall good place to experience Pinoy food.

Great place for Filipino cuisine :) service is great here too! They've opened Rey's jnr recently so will be trying that place as well.

If you’re looking to try something new, then be sure to head down Crown Street, Darlinghurst and check out the newly opened Modern Filipino restaurant called Rey's Place. Put it this way, they have SUCKLING PIG! Need I say more? Rey's Place is a cool split level restaurant bar with some great 60's tunes playing in the background, it is totally fitting for the styling of he place and we bopped along whilst enjoying our food and drinks. It is cosy and as you walk in, you will find that there is a well lit space with a bar and dining area. Downstairs is a larger area with another bar and the kitchen. The staff here are incredibly friendly and will make you feel welcome. They give a good rundown of the menu and provide advice on matching drinks with your food. Rey's Place do great cocktails make sure you check out the list. Many of the cocktails are original to Rey's and there is something for everyone: they have rum, gin, vodka and whiskey concotions. The ‘Filo Thyme’ was suprisingly good, made with Suntory Kakubin whisky, raspberry, thyme, citrus, prosecco this cocktail was refreshing and aromatic. The Thrilla in Manila was another favourite, this drink is appropriately named. The Thrilla is a stiff gin and juice cocktail of Bombay london dry gin, pineapple, oregeat, citrus. as the menu says “a killer and a thriller and a chiller” There is also a good range of beer, wine, spirits and non alcoholic drink on offer. The food at Rey's Place is tasty and very moreish. With exciting Filipino inspired street food for small plates and starters, best enjoyed with a drink. For starters; the BBQ corn Collette with chilli and garlic butter on sweet corn had a nice kick to it. We also selected the Okoy; crispy fried white bait fritters with spiced coconut vinegar were both quick to disappear. Also on the list were oysters and zucchini flowers which certainly sounded appealing too! From the smaller plates menu, it was impossible to go past the Sisig Bao slider of braised pork belly with ginger, garlic and onion, dressed with Smokey Adobar Aioli. It would be possible to go through a stack of these, so much flavour. We are now living with regret, as we should have ordered a double serve. The small plate selection also had a number of tempting options such as fried chicken wings and king salmon ceviche. There was a lot of food envy when the larger plates went pass our table to other diners. However, we couldn’t go past the Lechon- slow roast SUCKLING PIG with Sarsa and chilli- mansi drippings. This dish is truly droolworthy with succulent slow cooked meat and crispy skin crackling. We will have to return for the braised oxtail in peanut sauce or grilled stuffed squid next time. The sides include stir fried water spinach, salad or steamed rice. From the dessert menu there’s pretty much the one option or ice cream. The dessert is a tasty little number. The sugar glazed banana spring rolls with Ube Parfait which is purple with a taro like flavour and is served on banana chips for added texture. If you’re interested in trying a bit of everything, the tasting menu is a good option at the reasonable price of $45, and another $36 with wines to match. There aren't too many Filipino restaurants in Sydney unless you head out west for some street food. Rey's Place is a great spot to get acquainted with Filipino cusine, good food, drink and good vibes.

Super filling and delicious Filipino food! Got the all you can eat menu and we really eat our fill. The servings are generous and varied, with spicy and sweet sauces to match. The pork and corn are my favourites, though definitely try the other options too. The ube ice cream is by far my most favorite ube dessert I've ever had. The flavour was so strong and pandan-y, it stayed on your tongue for a while. If I wasn't so full I would have gotten a second serving!

Great place for Filipino cuisine!

We came here for a date night tonight. We live around the corner and had wanted to try this place for some time. The only reservation we could get was 6.30pm. I preferred 6.45pm but the restaurant said that 6.45 was unavailable since they needed the table after us for another seating. Ok fair enough so we came at 6.30. For a place that needs the table so bad they wouldn’t let us come 15 mins later, this was the slowest/worst service I have experienced. Our waiter was a Vietnamese gentlemen who was knowledgeable about the food but took forever to serve us. We were seated downstairs in a back corner on a table of 2. The waiter kept trying to head into our back corner for our drink order at first - I saw him make eye contact and try and come over, but a table nearer to him flagged him down and stopped him before he made it to us. They were a large group who gave him a long drink order. As soon as they finished talking to him, I expected him to come over to us and take our drink order. But no. He went away, and prepared all their drinks, served it to them, before coming over to us. It was 20 minutes delay. Where is the etiquette? This kept happening all night - every time we needed something, we would have to flag him down and he would attempt to make it to our back corner of the room, but sometimes other tables would grab his attention while he was walking to us, and EVERY TIME he would listen to them, then disappear and reappear with their drinks or condiments before re-attempting to reach us, around 15 mins later. Every time he approached our table he said ‘apologies for the delay’ and thanked us for our patience. I think we got thanked for our patience about 10 times. We got the set menu, which included a dessert. After a 1 HOUR WAIT I flagged the gentleman down, and he was so confused what I wanted. He was like ‘oh yeah, I’ll get your dessert, hang on’. He obviously forgot that we had a dessert coming, and we saw him run to the kitchen and ask the chef for it. Eventually we tried to leave - he never came to the table to help us pay so we waited at the front for another gentlemen who could help us with our bill. It’s such a shame the service is so poor here. We were there 6.30 - 9.15 pm which would have been about double the time we needed, which is ironic as they ‘needed the table’ for a party after us which is why we were hustled into an earlier reservation. With such poor service I’m not sure we will be back. It’s a shame because we both work in offices in the city nearby, and both of our colleagues wanted to hear about how this place was since nobody had been or heard of it. I don’t believe it was just us that had a delay since the poor waiter was always getting waved down by people - I don’t think he had enough time to check on everyone. I overheard another table say they were a bit frustrated also, but I tried not to let it ruin our date night.

My bf brought me over there for my BD celebration 🥳

At first beginning, I wasn’t amazed by the menu and atmosphere as I thought it will be another ‘Charcoal Bar’

However! It’s really nice to share place to go with you bf or friends. The most amazing dish is the traditional philippic chicken leg stewed in their simple but yummy soup. (Guorium🧪 has shared the ingredients in his review)

Overall, I love it and will try to imitate there dishes at home! Get my hands dirty!!

Happy birthday Xihuahua 🐶 We celebrated BD with fine filo cuisine here. First time two. It was quite impressive!

Salmon inilaw is very lit with the dressing. A good dressing with fresh ingredients makes the dish really special.

Veggie Adobo has a sweet and savory glazing. Beans are a bit tough but the eggplant was perfect. Mushy and flavorful.

Stuffed squid was fresh with nice chive cream dip. The soy ginger sauce was too strong so I did not eat that.

Chicken adobo was the big dish that came last. 4 large drumsticks bathing in a devious sour soup of onion, potato, lemon, vinegar, soy sauce, bay leave. It is so simple but tastes amazing! The chicken was grilled first then stewed in the soup. Meat is tender, make sure you have it with the soup!

Sailor Jerry rum, ummmm tastes just like rum. Not much to say other than the buttery taste. We also shared a bowl of rice which was a match made in heaven with the chicken broth.

Service was very very good. The staff were enthusiastic about their work I could tell. Table spaces are a bit cramped and light is very dim in here. Looks like a small bar from the outside. Lovely visit overall!

I've given Rey's a 4 but that's after I've realised I don't love pinoy food that much. Nothing bad, just not my preferred flavour profiles. The staff here were great and it's a cool little spot. I'd definitely suggest trying it as they do an excellent job and their food was tasty (hence the score).

5/5 Wov - basic filo food with a twist of fine dining.

Honestly saying was a bit concerned with this statement but no reason for that! Food was incredibly well made and tasty. Sometimes making basic food in fancy way creates small disasters, but not in here. Chef know what he is doing. Brilliant!

Ambiance was what can (should) be expected from pinoy restaurant, but here we had once again that extra mile further. Even when cutlery was placed - none matched and plates where from grand parents! Some might not find it nice, but I find it keeping this place real to it’s roots - even being top class.

Fantastic dinner. We will be back for sure.

NOTE. In our reviews 5/5 is not expected to be place with ‘3 Michelin Stars’. It’s valuation of roots of cuisine, brilliant way of making it and ambiance with service. All matches with Rey’s Place.

Rey’s Place combines all my favourite things about dining in Sydney: new and unusual flavours or dishes; food that comes from somewhere, authentically; and fine dining – I like a casual meal too, but I like to when I can see and taste the thought, care and quality that’s been put into a meal.

Rey’s Place is a small modern Filipino place with a chill vibe. The food did not disappoint at all. The Pork Bao were amazing. So juicy and my favourite of the night. Lechon was delicious with beautiful sauces that married it perfectly. The corn was also a hit.

Service was very fun, friendly and attentive. I will absolutely go back.

The rice bowls here are seriously delicious. I had only tried the pork belly one so far but im sure the other bowls are just as good. The only downside was that it was slightly oily. Had I not seen the oily matter left on the plate I would have felt better after having the dish. Empanadas could be heated more thoroughly as the middle was still quite cold. Nevertheless, I would come here again especially during the quiet lunch breaks. The ambience feels cozy and has natural light as well as some street views.

Rey’s place delivers a variety of modernised Filipino dishes. Dishes that stood out and highly recommend were the Salmon sinigang and lechon pork. As a Filipino the siopao the bun could of been more softer and found the longanisa a bit average. Looking forward for dessert however upon arrival the ube icecream was already melting but other than that it was a pleasant dessert. If you do come in a big group bare in mind that these do come in a sharing platter style so expect to order a lot more. For Filipino food it can bit a tad pricey but you can really enjoy this fresh new take.
Visited this place recently. The food is delicious here. There is no compromise on the quality of the food. The service they provide is fabulous. Tried tapsilog and chicken Inasal
Overall a nice and good experience here. The taste is fantastic here.

Had the tasting menu and could not recommend it enough! They have modernized Filipino food and made it look aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Everything was delicious but the highlight would definitely be the Kinilaw and the Lechon!

Been here so many times now, but an amazing selection of tasty dishes. My big tips are the BBQ Corn, King Salmon Kinilaw, Chicken Adobo Bao Sliders & the Lechon (Pork belly, with a little crackling!) - Always ask for the specials too!

Always amazing service and never a bad feed - leave room for dessert #ube icecream :D

Will be back again and again till my craving for that Lechon dies, or I do first...

Went here for my Birthday; had the baby octopus, pork sausage, sliders, salmon kinilaw and pork lechon.

Good portion sizing and great tasting too.
Service was great and the whole atmosphere was great with the ambient music..

Overheard the ability to do functions for 12 downstairs so definitely will consider when I organise my next event!
First brush with Filipino cuisine and its love at first sight ! Tried the Chicken Inasal from the lunch menu and loved the flavours. Lemongrass chicken bbq and garlic rice done right. Great place to try lunch while trying a new cuisine. And their service needs a special mention, it’s warm and very friendly.

Last month I want something new in my life something interesting in my life luck by chance a landed in filipino restaurant ...fish ball and pork skewers ...that's it .I love you god thanks for making it....a new place to try....

Went for the last Wed night of half-price BBQ skewers in June. Food was delicious and authentic Filipino! Great to have a place like this in Sydney. Pork skewers, fish balls & betamax skewers were delicious! The servings were small, so we had to order twice as much which would've been awful and definitely overpriced if everything was at full price.
We paid more than expected even with the discount, so this was the only issue with our meal.

The space is intimate and cosy so not best for big groups, plenty of st ticketed parking in surrounding streets at night.

It's a warm Friday date night for Matt and I and we are heading to Rey's Place in Surry Hills for dinner. Rey's Place is a modern Filipino tapas restaurant and Matt was very excited to check it out. Rey's place is a cosy venue with a small bar at the back where all the cocktail magic begins.

Just opened for about 10 weeks, this restaurant serves modern Filipino cuisine that is quite rare to find. Their menu is sophisticated and definitely not your everyday Filipino dishes.
The venue has a modern, young and hipster vibe and consists of two separate dining areas: street level and also an underground level.
Depsite its size that is not huge, we really felt homey upon entering this trendy restaurant.
The display of variety of drinks and Filipino items added a nice touch to the room.
We’ve had a variety of Filipino dishes before but Rey’s Place definitely offers extraordinary Filipino dishes. Every dish that we had was satisfying and plated beautifully.
Recommended dishes:
Lechon.
Make sure not to miss this dish if you visit Rey’s Place. If you love succulent, juicy slow roasted suckling pig with crispy skin that is served with tasty sarsa and chilli-mansi dip, you gotta have this top notch dish. That crackling tho!
Kare Kare.
Another dish I recommend you to have. The oxtail is braised in peanut sauce and that’s why it’s packed with flavour. The oxtail is tender and falls-of-the-bone nicely. I also enjoyed the shrimp paste glazed eggplant. The lovely shrimp paste flavour reminded me of an authentic Malaysian/Indonesian dish.
All in all we had an awesome and unique dining experience here.

Oh boy.. I think we found our new favourite Filipino restaurant in Sydney. It's our first time trying a Modern Filipino restaurant, and sooo happy that this place is here. Hurry up and head to Rey's Place!!!

Each dish we ordered we absolutely loved, it's traditional Filo food with a twist. It did remind me of the food I grew up with (being a half Filipino myself) so for me it brought back so many memories. We ordered the BBQ corn and Sisig Slider to start - both equally amazing, the corn had a great chilli kick, and the slider bun itself was equally good as the Sisig filling. Then we had the Adobong Pritong Manok, which was fried chicken with adobo mousse filling - very interesting!!! It was like a Jollibee Chicken Joy deluxe edition. Favourite though was the Lechon - the slow roasted pig... Oh My God...That was incredible, and brought back a lot of childhood memories eating Lechon at Filipino parties!!! The chilli-mansi dip was the bomb!!! Lastly we had the Turon ube dessert which went down so well, we probably could of ordered another but we were quite well-stuffed by the end of it. Even the waiter doubted we would finish everything we ordered, but we proved him wrong :P

We were served by Rey's son, who was incredibly friendly and also made us feel very comfortable. The place is quite small, so be prepared for a very cosy eating experience. Seriously, it's great Filipino food in Sydney, very reasonably priced, and a great place to go for a romantic date night. We will definitely return and order more of the menu that we missed the first time. Salamat po Tito Rey!!! :D

Great vibe, amazing food, interesting flavours and excellent wine list. The ube dessert is to die for! Can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.

The lechon ($22) is their take on slow roast suckling pig. It comes with sweet liver-based housemade sarsa (sauce) and soy calamansi dipping sauce (toyo mansi). This is probably one of the best lechon-style dishes I’ve had in Sydney with it’s crispy crackling and tasty tender meat.
