Review Doyles At Sydney Fish Markets - Sydney

Alex Chen
Had lunch here and ordered the Seafood platter for 2, Corona and a Rose' wine. The Seafood here tasted fresh and the batter used was light and crisp. The oysters and scallops were excellent and not fishy at all. The octopus was on the chewy side and the calamari was bland on its own so you'll need to have it with tartare sauce. The fish cocktails were delicious but it only came with 3 which was a little bit disappointing. The only thing you'll need to be aware of is that they do have card surcharges (1.1%) and the lines are long so you will have to wait for your food and drinks. Furthermore finding a table is extremely difficult during peak times too. Also the floors and tables are a bit dirty because of how busy it is.

it can get a little busy here and you might need to wait a for a while getting a table... also depends on your luck with the timing of ur arrival. food... as usual... is deliciously cooked. but beware sitting outside at the front... though the rubbish disposal container might seem far enough... depends on the wind direction... you might get a whiff of garbage smell coming from the container... as it is being used by the shops around throughout the whole day... and again... depends on ur luck. =)

Situated at the start (or end) of the internal run of shops, this is the newest shop and, if you want to eat in, the nicest. A decently spaced pleasant atmosphere with a good breeze blowing through. Better than the rest. The fresh food is good but expensive, the prepared food is lacking - the fried rice is poor and the noodles were dry (we ate at 1200 on Sunday - so no excuses). Overall a nice experience, but like most other venues here, for eat in they are driven towards the tourist dollar.

The portions were a good size and had good flavor. We tried three types of prawns, two scallops and some John Dory fish that came with five pieces. One Greek salad and a house salad filled in the rest of the cracks in our appetite. It's been 34 years since we've been to Doyles ( last time at Watson's Bay).

Best choice for Oysters fans. Oyster quality is very good. I had ordered Sydney rock in different shops at the same day. Doyles one is the best and also the most expensive. But it is worth the price. Also the customer service is partient when answering the question and giving advice. Grilled seafood is not bad. Good to try. Last but not least, the environment is clean and cozy too.

Pretty average food. I had the lobster (700g) with noodles $69 and XO sauce fried pipi (500g)with noodles $35 on Xmas eve. Lobster noodles a little tasteless , need another pitch of salt. Pipi is so small. Ordinary food.

Prominent, front entrance location, looks a bit sad ... Sydney's rock oyster are cheaper in Melbourne, why is that? Oysters cost about 20% more than South Melbourne Market and Queen Victoria Market down south ... šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

Walked in just before lunchtime so it wasnā€™t too busy yet. Staff were really friendly and helpful, great service. Had the barbecue grilled platter for 2 and a lobster mornay - loved them both and would be glad to swing by again. I would like to try all the different lobster options: garlic, xo, Singaporean chilli etc. The place was starting to get busy when we finished so highly recommend coming slightly earlier to avoid crowds.

Awesome seafood,so delicious, lots of selection and reasonably priced, friendly service

This place probably has the best fish and chips in the whole fish market. Generous portions of crispy beer battered fish and the chips are super crunchy. The fish and chips from two other places that Iā€™ve tried at the market are soggy and stale. This place also provides tartare sauce for you so donā€™t have to worry about paying for sauce!

Doyles are renowned across Australia for their premium seafood šŸŸšŸ™šŸ¦. Established in 1885, five generations of the Doyles family have been setting the standard for seafood restaurants, with 3 prime locations in Sydney.

At @SydneyFishMarket there are 6 types of oysters on display that you can choose to taste, 4 of which being the famous Sydney rock (SR) oysters, harvested from different regions. The SR oyster šŸš is a species endemic to Australia and New Zealand. Despite the name they are not found in Sydney but rather in bays, inlets and sheltered estuaries from eastern VIC, along the east coast of NSW and up to southern QLD. The SR is characterised by its deep, rich and lasting sweetness.
______
. Bundabah SR 1āƒ£ hits you straight away with the intense umami and possesses a firm texture.
. Bruny Island 2āƒ£ is less firm, milder in taste but much creamier.
. Lemon Tree Passage SR 3āƒ£ is also rather mild but sweeter than Bundabah.
. Moulting Bay 4āƒ£ is the strongest tasting as it's super smokey and high in mineral intensity.
. Quibray Bay SR 5āƒ£ is a mixture of fresh, soft, sweet and creamy, my favourite!
. Camden Haven 6āƒ£ has a rich flavour, not too milky but with super sweet and soft flesh.
______
Doyles shell these singularly or by the dozen, so go wild!

Fun fact: Oysters change sex during their lifetime. They start out as males and later change to females šŸ‘¦šŸ”œšŸ‘§. One way to keep the population going I guess?

We bought grilled fish platter for $45. I was very disappointed. Oysters were cooked. They were salty and dry. I am not sure how fresh octopus was. Very very tough, that was the worst octopus I ever had.
Grilled barramundi was ok, no seasoning though. I personally think it is not worth to pay.

When all you wanted was a few nice oysters from the place where you should be getting some of the best.

Pathetic. Is this why you guys cover them?
When you visit Sydney fish markets, thereā€™s a lot of good places to eat. If you donā€™t like to roam around and look for a place to eat, this is just right for you. itā€™s located right in front of the Fish Market. The ambience is okay considering itā€™s a fish market, donā€™t expect too much. itā€™s a bit pricey here, the seafood that we bought was yummy and there are a lot of fresh seafood selections if you fancy them. Customer service is okay.

Came from Melbourne for a friends wedding, had to try this place as we watched a video on youtube Worth It saying its a great oyster place, tried their Turess Lake oysters and it was delicious, shucked upon ordering, the flavour of the oyster taste like fresh sea water and extremely fresh flesh, something you have to try to understand the flavour. Not sure why their ratings are very low at the moment, maybe zomato needs to open a separate file called Doyles Oyster Bar, worth a try if you're in Seafood Market in Sydney.

Seafood is always fresh and delicious. Excellent seating area that is always clean and lots of open air flowing through so it doesn't smell damp and smelly like the other internal places. Absolutely love the oyster bar, it changed me from being someone that dislikes oysters to love them as they are so fresh! These people really know what they are doing I recommend the fresh cold seafood over the cooked ones even though their grill is tasty it's a bit over priced. Well worth the visit though!

Have been here a couple of time and it's a bit hit or miss. Not quite the same as the one in Watsons bay and have mostly underwhelmed....still when the sun is out and your after some seafood with a few beers/wine it's not too bad. I'm yet to try out the other restaurant within the markets so will re asses once I compare, however I expected more.

This place is always the best place for tourist to come and eat! ā¤ļøā˜ŗļøšŸ™ŒšŸ». It was fulfilling and the food was too good to be true!! šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ˜šŸ˜

We were expecting crispy fried fish and perfect fries. What we got was not exactly that. The beer battered fish was amazing but the tempura one got soggy and soft very fast. The fries were not the type that are perfectly crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. The balsamic vinegar tasted good though. Overall not the most amazing experience, taste wise, here.

Good location in Sydney Fish Market. Newly decorated.
The BBQ Shack looks impressive but they can't even cook the seafood properly. It is still raw after second time of return. You can't trust the so called "chef". Very Disappointed
Sarah
We went around 2 pm on Good Friday and despite it being the busiest day of the year, we managed to get a seat and the wait was pretty reasonable considering the throngs of people (and we were able to eat a dozen beautiful Sydney rock oysters and drink wine while we waited. We ordered the lobster platter which was plentiful and delicious and very reasonably priced. Would definitely return (perhaps at a less busier time)

So much seafood! Lunch in Sydney.., oysters, scallops...
Amazing fresh seafood and beautiful setting.
Drinks to enjoy and a glorious setting.
Docfood
First time at fish markets. The scallops were filling but I think there was too much rice and the cheese maybe too heAvy for the fish. The lobster was bit dry. The fresh oyster with sea urchin and salmon roll was the bomb. In the weekends it's hard to find place to sit which is frustrating.
TresHungry
Oysters were large, plump and unbelievably fresh. However I wouldn't say they are any better than oysters from another stall. The grilled octopus was a slight disappointment. The meat wasn't very tender. In fact it was rather tough and chewy. They were well-seasoned though.

It was my very first time at the Sydney Fish Market and it was a pleasant experience. Though a little busy, I especially liked they had cleaners frequenting the a4ea incase if there's a vacant but dirty table, they'd wipe it down immediately without being asked.

We had the platter, eel, scallops, abalone and fresh salmon (which was not as cold as preferred) but majority of the seafood is quite tasty and fresh! I really enjoyed it here, does get a little expensive as there's so many good eats!

Dolly The Explorer
Although it was wayyyyy to busy and customer service was absolutely shocking... The seafood was very fresh and tasted great. Would come back for some more scallops and Kilpatrick oysters YUM
Tastingthecloud
I just feel surprised that this place actually got a such low mark...the oyster this place have I can even gave a 5/5!

Freshly sucked without tap water diluted. Full of sea flavor. Many option to choose from, from sydney rock to giant pacific oyster.

During the peak time, it has long queue because they open the oysters you picked in front of you.

A must in sydney Fish market if you eat oysters
Shane&Brenda
We really enjoyed our lunch here. The fish was fresh, certainly no frills but good food served promptly. On our visit there were plenty of people waiting for tables which did make having a casual lunch a bit uncomfortable.
Lynden Fonseca
The food's fresh but the cutlery is plain old plastic. Make use of your hands but no one's offering you a hand wipe. Besides the food being fresh, please use the take away option to relish it. Scavenger birds may not look bad but they're all around you!!!

Our office is up the road and went to Doyles for a team lunch.Ā
I would have to say I have never received such bad service or quality of food in my life.Ā
I ordered a BBQ seafood plate which was $23.Ā
They got my order confused with someone else's and tried to tell me I had already eaten.Ā
My food finally came out and the prawns were half cleaned and shelled, seafood was piled up in a soggy mess on the plate. Squid was undercooked, salad was soggy nothing was fresh.Ā
I asked the staff members what type of fish was plonked on top and she said Brime. Only reason I knew otherwise is ive grown up fishing with my family and I said "Well thats funny as its Shark" she corrected herself.

I had a few bites and could not eat anything else.

The staff could not care, flies were everywhere and when tables are cleared, the plates are scrapped into big bins beside your table.

Do not go here, the worst food I have ever eaten. To the point im worried im going to be very sick tonight.
Dominic Svensson
Doyle's seems to use more local seafood than most places at the markets. It's pretty basic dining but has its own casual eating area with some views over the bay. The food was good and the platters are good value. It's nothing fancy but a good choice if you want to eat at the markets.
Jax
Pricey and not great. No flavour and overlooked seafood - disappointing. There are many other places at the market with better tasting food. Avoid.
How Hungry I Am
I think about I should write a review or not by the way Yesterday I went to fish market with my friend and desire to choose this restaurant for our lunch I absolutely disappointed for our food cold and oily we ordered seafoods pallet it's costs 36.80$ and nothing in our food tastes good
Foodie B
Only had the fresh chucked oysters at the store outside. They are very fresh and got a great variety from sweet and less salty to a fuller creamy style oysters which leave a great after taste in your mouth
Denise_jjp
Terrible. My husband and I both Ordered the BBQ plate which has a combination of seafood
The peice of fish was rubbery the rest of the food was ordinary.
Very disappointing I've purchased much tastier food at my shopping centre
Without the hefty price.
Little Eats Sydney
The Sydney Fish Markets is the worldā€™s third largest fish market and a Sydney icon. Dating back to 1945 it has been the place to come for the freshest seafood in town. Whilst it is always busy, it is a great place to bring little ones because of all the fun and excitement of watching fishmongers at work and live seafood on display.

Seafood haven right here with stunning views! The most important point of all to start off with - you want to get here early . Not only are there less crowds in the morning, you get to choose the freshest noms first, pick a table outside with minimal sea gull poop (they're everywhere I tell you), and wait for that afternoon sunshine to kick in while you're down with your food, all set up nicely. Now watch everyone else rush by - hehe. Claudio's Seafood located in the parking lot is known to be one of the most popular stores at the Fish market; which is nice, you can pop straight in after parking your ride. Inside, it's covered in all sorts of seafood everywhere, anything you want from the ocean you will be able to find. Head on inside to the Market and on the left are the popular hot food stores. Think deep fried fish & chips, onion rings, calamari rings, grilled cheese lobsters, etc. Grab the Seafood platter for 2 if you like the sound of the above! 'Real' seafood eaters will tell you

Sydney Fish markets !!!!! Very very popular placeā€¦never get a table anywhereā€¦as my sister says, on the weekdays you fight for your food and table with the seagulls, and on the weekends you fight for your table with the Asian tourists!!! Nonethelessā€¦itā€™s always a awesome place to go and have a nice seafood lunch, and bring some fresh fish home to cook for dinnerā€¦ So much variety too! Thereā€™s a pretty good yum cha place upstairs- I went to a reception there once with fabulous food as wellā€¦.then you have places to buy your sashimi, and oysters, grilled/fried/steamed seafoodā€¦and most of all..you can get crab there cooked for you with the sauce you want!!!! After your amazing meal, you can go to the deli and get some snacksā€¦ Perfect day out

Love it or loath it, SFM is truly a fascinating place where seafood lovers can feast their eyes on almost any imaginable seafood and vivid images of how they can be cooked at home. After all, Sydney is an amazing city for seafood. Where else can you get such fresh varieties of seafood at 7 am in the morning?

Very Dissappointing!. Sometimes you have to pay for a bad experience to appreciate a good one, and this was one of those occasions. This was below par, way way down. The fish was leathery, the chips appeared to be cooked in oil that was weeks' old and the squid was barely edible. Had to send a search party through the mornay to find the oysters and when we finally did, had to extract them with a pick and shovel. This wasn't even basic, it was terrible! Oh, I almost forgot....there was one tomato quarter in the salad or should I say underneath all the green stuff! To serve this up with a straight face is just arrogance at its highest level, and if Doyles choose to ignore this genuine review from a couple of plodders in the inner west, then they will prove the old adage true; "arrogance of ignorance". A real shame because we went there on the strength of the excellent experience we had at Doyles' Watsons Bay.

Soooo disappointing. Having eaten at Doyle's Watson Bay several times, we thought we would have lunch at Pyremont today. What a bad idea. Service was sloppy and chaotic, the eating area was pretty grubby and the food was really disappointing. Ordered the BBQ seafood platter - prawns were ok, scallops and squid tasteless, and the fish was awful - they said it was mahi mahi but it was overcooked swordfish. We spoke to a manager who did give us a partial refund, but we'd much rather have had a great meal

Just ate there today, without fail this has to be the absolute worst seafood I have ever eaten..such a shane because Doyles once had the best reputation. I took overseas visitors and they said the food was fit for the rubbish tip. I am very embarressed..also they got my order wrong on 3 occassions because the girl kept getting distracted.

Very Average. Given you are at the fish markets expected a lot better.
Stuartj7
Appalling food, service and ambience. You have to question why they are allowed to use the famous Doyle's name. It is no better than your local chip shop and a lot more expensive. I booked a table - don't bother as one isn't held for you. Service was of the couldn't care less school. Table was filthy, lobster was probably cooked a week ago and reheated. Tasted and had the consistency of rubber.
Left feeling ripped off and ill treated.
Jane H
Possibly worst salt & pepper calamari I've ever been served ... Oily, rubbery, tasteless! Shane really.
Sydney Gal
DISGUSTING! Where do i start?! Filthy tables, Awful food and lousy service. I definitely won't be back. Way too overpriced. Very disappointed!
Archie Moses
RUBBISH! Not only was the place filthy the service was non existent and the food has given me gastro... DO NOT go here
Kalesi
Bad Service, Dirty Tables, 1 hour wait time, below average food. I DO NOT recommend this place, waste of money! Very disappointed!
World Traveller
A disgrace for Sydney. Surely the owners read the many unfavourable reviews but they are so busy making money from the unwary, gullible tourists, that they really don't care.

Our tourism body also shares the guilt, for they constantly promote the Sydney Fish Market as a great 'attraction' when it's no better than a tourist trap. And Doyles is the worst trap of all in the market, taking undue advantage of its name and its favourable location.

If you must go, try the food court - that's a lot better.
Cheryl
Had a platter which was huge but all the hot food was lost in the copious amount of cheap nasty batter. The local fish n chips was as good. 6/10
Monique
Don't bother, waste of money. Buy the seafood at the market, and make a nicer meal at home for cheaper.
GregFresser
The WORST SEAFOOD MEAL I have EVER EATEN. Undoubtedly the worst seafood meal I have ever eaten. Shared a BBQ seafood platter. The fish(??) was an undercooked sliver; my colleague's meagre prawns and squid were less than ordinary; and the 'salad' was actually garnish and the 10 chips seemed like they were straight from the 1960s. For $22.50, the price ought to have been $10. Not a platter, by any means. AWFUL. Come on Doyles. The Fish Markets are a tourist destination point. What sort of reputation do you give your venue, and more importantly that of Sydney. In this case - a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.
JustVisiting
Well Done Lobster... very disappointing. I like lobster; but not well done. Last Sunday's lunch was not good. The lobster was very small and chewy. For me Doyles diminished their brand by serving really poor quality food. I will not visit again.
Sydneysidder
Ordered mussels in white wine sauce and guess what the mussels were still with beard and the sauce was yuck!! My friends who ordered lobster found it very dry. I think they should stop charging so much and hire proper chef or cook! The kitchen looked dirty and they were not making food to order! How can they cook seafood in advance especially when they charge $25+ for their dishes.

How to destroy a mud crab? The first time in my life I found a mud crab destroyed - how is this possible? Great globs of cornflour based glue like gunk passed off as "ginger and shallot" straight out of 1950s Australian-Chinese. Yuk. Didn't even finish it as it was so gross and impossible to even get a hand hold due to the floury glue that soon turned to jelly. Crab was boiling hot in parts and cold in others, unbelievable. Prior to this utter disappointment, the oysters were oysters and the "classic prawn cocktail" served without any cocktail sauce! Can't believe Doyles even lend their name to this place. Avoid and instead buy a few beers, grab a table and eat the beautifully fresh seafood on offer elsewhere.
Andrew
You'll get better fish and chips from your average local take away. Fish tasted like it had been cooked in old oil. Chips were soggy. There were bits of broken shell in the oysters. It's a bit of a rip off - seems to be aimed at the one-visit-only tourist crowd. There are a hundred better places to get good seafood in Sydney. Avoid this place.
Enrico Monaco
Doyles at Sydney Fish Markets. The fresh fish and chips and pesky seagulls. Cheeky little buggers!
Nick De La Force
This place used to be pretty good, but has slipped in quality over the years. My visit today was diisappointing, all the care and quality that used to exist has gone, it feels like doyles (who normally have great restaurants) gave up and just gave thier name to some cheap second rate takeout place. The food is still edible, but really nowhere near the quality it used to be.
