Review Viet - Sydney

Natasha C
Over priced average food at best. Example: 3 pieces of eggplant in oyster sauce = $25!! Mostly bland and tasteless; apart from the Viet pancake which was really good, to be fair (and the only reason I'm giving 2* instead of 1). Very limited veggie options. Our waitress couldn't speak English so our order was wrong, even though she repeated it 3 times. To top it all off, I found a piece of plastic in my food about 3cm long .... I told the waiter who said he'd tell the kitchen. No apology offered!! Overall below average experience and I wouldn't go back.

It is not Vietnamese food, well only 2 dish, the pho. Other dishes were ordinary. Not worth it for the price. I'm being nice by giving 3 stars.

Been here before the covid restriction. Today, walked pass this shop and they offering take away pho for $10. Pho real? Yes indeed. Bought chicken pho and beef pho. My personal opinion o love the chicken pho better than the beef pho, just because the broth for beef pho is lacked of depth, all the goodness of herbs and spices, like black pepper, charred cinnamon and star anise. Both broth comes with extra either beef meatballs or chicken meatballs.

Didn’t do it for me. It’s not Vietnamese food - it’s mixed Asian. Pho had a very salty broth. A lot of items on the menu are Indonesian and Chinese. Spring rolls were small, not much meat but a lot of noodles! Other items including San Choy Bow are absolutely off. The flavour uses bamboo shoot. I would recommend this place if you’re looking for a mixed Asian but not Vietnamese. If you’re OK with salty and saucy food then great. Vietnamese food should be fresh and light - this is where the problem is

Ordered through Deliveroo and food was cold, pork belly was dry and fresh rolls split and fell apart. Really wanted to try the food and extremely disappointed. Obviously both parties are at fault, however if Viet can't deal with food delivery maybe they shouldn't do it. Simple

We ordered a pho and a stir fry noodle, food tasted fine. However service was not that great. We asked to order for a long time and they kept forgetting to come back to us. We also ordered a sparkling wine but they gave us sparkling water, seems like the waiters were really flustered but it wasn’t even that busy there

We had quite a nice meal at this restaurant for lunch. The noodles were really delicious and the non alcoholic drinks were lovely. Slight criticism is that the noodle dish was slightly too oily, but otherwise the flavour was really nice.

A Vietnamese restaurant near Spice Alley. Nice ambience and great atmosphere. Outdoor seatings are available.

The most famous thing is their Pho.
[Pho Bo] $14🍜
A traditional Vietnamese pho with beef and beef meatballs. The broth tastes awesome at the beginning when I was hungry, but soon became too sweet, just as other reviews which mentioned.

So if you work nearby, it’s a good restaurant for quick lunch. But in general I wouldn’t recommend you to visit this one if you have other choices.

I kept going back for the broth that they use in their chicken combination pho and the chicken balls are nice. Probably won't be back anytime soon though as the last time I went, there weren't enough noodles and their chicken pieces are always tasteless.

Absolutely delicious!! Great food and atmosphere. We had the pho, san Choi bao, and vermicelli noodles which were all full of flavour and amazing. Will definitely come back. Thank you!!

Pho combination beef: the soup was sweet af, one of the worst pho I had in SydneyCrab fried rice: it was not worth it to have a $25 fried rice that you hardly could find the crab in itSalt and pepper squid: it is just "deep fried" squid. The squid was not marinated and you cant even taste any flavour of pepper in it.

OVERALL TERRIBLE.

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night, whereby there was a reasonable crowd, however still managed to find tables outside.

Ordered the Combination Beef Pho. Unfortunately, no condiments (i.e. traditional herbs, beansprouts) were provided. Good portion and varied types of beef. However, the broth was sweet.
Other people in our group were happy with their meals though.

Prompt service. Reasonable prices. Casual ambience - look for quieter tables indoors.

Overall, a standard Vietnamese restaurant with many menu options, however maybe go elsewhere for pho.

I recommend avoiding this restaurant at all costs. The food was sub-par and the service was absolutely atrocious. For authentic Vietnamese food take a trip to Cabramatta, you won't be disappointed like you would be leaving this place.

Lower Mekong is one of those restaurants everyone should avoid. Service is slow (and non-existent) whereas food is simply atrocious. I ordered their sugarcane shrimp and pho bo but decided to leave after waiting for 45 minutes for the pho.

Look at the photographs, my dear friends. The sugarcane shrimp was uncooked and raw. It seems so common for restaurants in Sydney to serve this sort of food.

I brought my friend to the spice alley for lunch. We decided to try Mekong. The food was overall delicious. The papaya salad was fresh and tasty. The lemongrass beef curry was okay. My friend enjoyed it. But I am not too into beef curries, maybe that's why I didn't enjoy it as much. Overall, a good experience. Would definitely revisit.

I wanted pho. It is on a list with better choices that my doctor has given me for eating out. So we ended up here. It's a fairly nice part of Spice Alley, its own restaurant with dedicated seating and a liquor license. The pho was good quality and tasty.

Staff has no consideration for clients. Manager even worse than staff. Service needs improvement. Do not recommend even if food was ok since there are so many friendlier places in Sydney with equivalent food and much better service.

After one of the best dinners this year at Upper Mekong, we just had to try Lower Mekong. It didn't disappointed. More classic Vietnamese dishes elevated like their Pho. The tomato rice with the most moist fried chicken ever was the standout. For the price point, definitely value for money.

I invited my friend to Mekong to have dinner after work to celebrate I got a new job. We went into lower Mekong and I told the waitress I would like to sit upstairs. Then the waitress told me there are two restaurant here, which are Mekong upstairs and Lower Mekong on ground floor, but they belong to the same boss. She asked me to get out of the restaurant because I need to wait for 5 mins for the Mekong upstairs which opens at 6pm. Then My friend and I intended to sit in the chairs outside because all tables are empty. The waitress came out and commanded us to stand up and leave until the Mekong opens.

Come on! It was only 5 minutes, and the two restaurants are belong to the same boss! how could you treat your customers like this way?

I would never go to this restaurant again! If I am the boss, I will never hire a waitress who behave in this way.
A-Meal-For-Two
So there're two different restaurants in this 1 building. Mekong which is upstairs and apparently more upscale and Lower Mekong downstairs that serves Vietnamese street food.

We ordered rice paper entree dish which turned out to be 2 small crispy rice papers with pork floss, chilli jam and some unidentifiable lump of something cold and rubbery. It was ok but I won't order it again.

Then came our main course of lemongrass chicken curry and deep fried snapper topped with sweet & sour chilli sauce. Both main dishes were really good; the curry was delicious and chicken was cooked till very tender, almost melt in your mouth. Fish was battered (whole fish) and deep fried and was cooked well, sauce was well balanced but there was very little sauce on the plate.

We shared the coconut sago dessert which was ok but slightly overly sweetened.

Overall it was a decent meal. Would go back for the curry and the fish.
I'm Still Hungry
Much has been said of Mekong and its menu. You can tell that I quite like it, and this will be despite any disparaging comments about “authenticity” that get raised anytime a restaurant that serves more than one cuisine is talked about. In the end, the food at Mekong is simply delicious, where with the right starters, curry mains and that god-sent coconut ice cream, sets a high bar to beat.

Put on your adventure caps, it’s time to set sail into Southeast Asia.

Recently opened Vietnamese joint in the happening Spice Alley/Kensington Street precinct. In an already competitive market (think Miss Chu, Mama's Buoi, Madame Nhu, Great Aunty Three, Marrickville et al) you really need to stand out from the crowd and I'm not sure Lower Mekong is there yet. The pho broth was good but lacked zing and needed chilli sauce. A tomato inspired chicken rice dish was bland and the accompanying pickles flavourless. Overall a beautiful fit out but a menu that lacks oomph. Service was adequate.
