Huge selection of small and large dishes from a range of Asian cuisines. They also have a huge dim sum menu. I loved the pork sliders and the salmon sashimi salad (although it was a bit bit heavy on the cream fraiche). I also had the eggplant chips in honey sauce but I wouldn't recommend them as the batter was too thick and there was very little eggplant in them. Service was fast and efficient.
It's conveniently located in the MetCentre, close to Wynyard station where a lot of my friends and I work. It's basically the closest yum cha to us and when we feel like yum cha on a weekday and don't have time to go to Palace Chinese or Sky Phoenix, we come here. It's perfect because the service is quick and efficient and though the menu is not massive, the food is decent. We tend to book though we have walked in a few times. It always seems to be busy but we never had to wait long for a table.
The food here was pretty good and the service wasn't too bad.
Our meals came out relatively quickly and they were also able to sit us at a table of 5 when we got there without a reservation.
Food came out well presented and portion sizes weren't too bad.
Would recommend this place for some good Chinese food.
Chefs Gallery is a Chinese restaurant with a series of stores in the CBD and Macquarie. They recently opened up a new yum cha chain in Wynyard and we came here for a lunch with colleagues eager to dig into their dumplings, noodles and rice dishes. To start off, we ordered their Jumbo prawn wonton dumplings. The meat in here was generous and the broth was light and went well with the dumplings.
Went there for a work lunch and i had no idea this place existed!!! Quite pricey for dumplings, i think it was 4 for 6.9 and 5 for 8.9? Something ridiculous. But the dumplings were pretty decent.. so i cant complain too much. I had the spicy dumplings - it wasnt as spicy as the picture, id say mild. The staff werent too attentive and we had to constantly wave around to get someone's attention.
A new menu and a new concept - they will be displaying art at the restaurant. And just like a gallery you can buy it. There's an imposing wall sized painting of Kylie in a Monroe-esque position with red guards dancing in the background.
Try the shredded lamb and cumin rolled in fluffy roti bread. Brilliant.
After an extraordinary Chef's Gallery experience at Town Hall, I was very keen to try their downtown version, a yum cha restaurant, with an elegant dining room, and a takeaway operation to the side. The takeaway offers some good deals, one of which I ordered: three pieces of dim sum (prawn har gow, vegetarian dumpling, pork and prawn shiu mai); singapore fried noodles and a soy milk drink. The dim sum came with soy sauce and chill sauce and were really tasty, the singapore noodles were a little disappointing (good texture, plenty of prawns but tasted a bit like curry powder), and the soy milk drink was surprisingly good. At $12.90 I thought this was good value but next time I would probably just get two types of dim sum rather than one of the lunch sets.
Chefs Gallery is known for their modern Chinese cuisine especially their handmade noodles which are prepared fresh when you order. You can even witness the skillful chefs hand prepare the noodles right in front of you while you wait. Chefs Gallery Noodle preparation (Town Hall location pictured) The interior of both city locations (Town Hall and Jamison Metcentre) have a similar vibe while being aesthetically quite unrelated. The Town Hall location is large and open with an awesome view into the kitchen where you can see the chefs hard at work making noodles. The Metcentre restaurant is smaller with a more closed off kitchen and seems to cater more for the business lunch crowd. Service at both city locations during all my visits was hit and miss - the majority of wait staff are attentive, friendly and pleasant with only a small minority who are rude and unfriend
The thumbnail photo is a Macau style mini burger with that huge pork fillet in the middle. This dish was rather interesting and I enjoyed it heaps! The bun was so delicious, did they fry it? I think I loved the bun more than the meaty dishes.
A canteen feel with restaurant prices (but some outstanding grub). Tiny tables pushed too close together; hurried service, entrees and mains served together five minutes from order, no space on the table and food getting cold. Each emptied plate was grabbed the minute the last shard was eaten, demonstrating diligence but little understanding of service etiquette.
So why come here? The Kingfish sashimi and the salt and pepper egg and spinach tofu are finger-licking good. The seaweed salad and the vegetarian spring rolls were also very good. Our only dud dish was the spinach noodles which was very beautiful but the noodles tasteless and too oily.
At 50% promotion price, I'd eat here twice a day. At full price, I'd expect better service and more of a restaurant-feel.
