Review Dish - Sydney

absolutely amazed at the food we ate tonight! I have not been able to find vegan kottu anywhere before so I was super happy to be able to eat it at dish. The food came quickly and was delicious. we ordered the potato curry and the vegan kottu. so sad that I do not live in Sydney otherwise this place would become a go to for me. definitely recommend making the trip to visit if you're looking for good vegan Sri Lankan food.

Absolutely delicious Sri Lankan food. Friendly and fast service. Generous portions and reasonably priced (approx $23 a dish). All the dishes were unique and flavourful. Recommend the lamb dosa (which is HUGE), roti kottu (my favourite), lamprais, beef curry with roti, mango lassi. They make the roti, dosa and hoppers fresh. The waitress checked up on us throughout the meal to make sure everything was good. Colourful decor and located in the quiet end of Glebe point road. Will be back to try more dishes

Fantastic Food, even though the restaurant was struggling with staff shortages due to covid they took care of us really well no complains. As vegetarians we had no complains either. We enjoyed the hoppers, parathas, jackfruit biriyani and particularly the desserts.

Wow! Such a flavour explosion, especially the lamb, beef and string hoppers. Very pleasant and efficient staff. Just a slightly inconvienient placing of our table in the back room, (party of 5), only a minor thing tho. Recommended... WILL be back!

Really excellent food that everyone in the family loved. We came here for a big family dinner and everything on the menu was fantastic. The hoppers were freshly made, curries were fragrant and everything very well priced. Don't miss out on the entree plate either. We will be back! Thanks to staff at the restaurant.

Mind blown. Vegan Curry and rice combo is simply one of the best tasting indian/sri Lankan combos ever! (Even compared to meat dishes). Sago dessert is also crazy good.

This is our go to when we crave Sri Lankan authentic food. The aromas once you walk into this restaurant gets your taste buds going. The staff are very friendly, and the food is amazing. We particularly love their goat and fish curry. See you for takeaway tonight!

We went to this place yesterday. Due to unavoidable circumstances, we had to rush out of place without having dinner. At the time, we had ordered entrees and some drinks. Girls at the cashier (front serving area) were humble enough to cancel the order without any charge. An hour later, one of us left his very expensive phone on a table at the restaurant. The restaurant team secured and returned it to us. Their honesty and hospitality are exceptional. We will definitely revisit this place—highly recommended place.

First time to this venue. Staff were friendly. <br/>The food is OK, maybe the dishes we ordered weren't their stand out dishes. Hopper with curry chicken was nice, devil chicken was the stand out. The comment I'd like to make is that if you are sitting in front of the kitchen area, expect to be smoked. It's probably worse than going to Korean BBQ. So don't wear your best clothes. <br/>A good thing though is that is is BYO and if you forget your booze, there is a bottle shop down the road you can walk to.

AWFUL experience. Booked this place for a Valentines dinner. After 1 hour of waiting for food, we asked why we hadn’t even received our entrees yet and were given some lame excuse about the “entrees taking a long time to cook” even though we could see that people who had arrived and ordered AFTER us had already received their food. Several UberEATS orders seemed to be fulfilled and yet we were still sitting around, waiting. It ended up taking 1 hour and 30 minutes for our entrees to arrive. My entree (veg pakoras) was bland - the veggies were soggy and the batter was gummy rather than crispy - and definitely NOT worth the wait My fiancé’s main course arrived about 10 minutes after the entrees and I urged him to start eating the main course without me given that it could be another long wait before I got my food. Sure enough, after 2 hours in total, I still hadn’t received my main course. People who had arrived at the restaurant after us had already finished their meals and left. A couple sitting at a neighbouring table even leaned towards and remarked incredulously about how we still hadn’t been served. I was so hungry and unhappy that I decided it was time for us to go home; I’d rather eat fridge leftovers than waste another second sitting around waiting. Altogether, we only ever received 3 dishes out of the 6 that we ordered. Staff were mildly apologetic but didn’t seem that bothered - we were offered a 10% discount, which is pretty pathetic considering we spent money getting there, wasted time sitting there, and were heading home without receiving what we actually came for. We will NEVER be back. I wish we had just stayed home and enjoyed some wine and a homemade meal instead of being ignored, humiliated and left hungry. Absolutely disgraceful service, and waiting around feeling hungry was a horrible way to end a long, tiring day at work and a bad way to spend a Valentines date. PS: the wall beside the table we were sitting on was filthy and covered with food splatter.

What a gem of a restaurant. Dish is located at the other end of Glebe Point Road, past the Toxteth Hotel. It’s cute, the food is excellent as is the service and when I get a hankering for good Sri Lankan food, this will be the only place I will go. #srilankan

The restaurant seriously need to MANAGE its employees and the service. I wasnt served water for 10 minutes and had to ask for it. I ordered biryani and the masala tea. <br/>While waiting for the order, another person came and asked me to change tables. Why didnt you know where to make me sit at the first place ? <br/>Secondly, biryani came after 20 minutes and it was OKAY. Nothing great. And i again asked for masala tea but the stewardess said she will just check and get back. I even finished the biryani and half n hour passed, NO MASALA TEA. I paid and left the place. PATHETIC SERVICE AND CONFUSED STAFF !

The serve of food was tiny - half rice bowl serve of fish curry - 2 small pieces of fish which were refrigerator cold in the centre in a very mild cumin based sauce, 2 hoppers which are like hotcakes with crisped edges, and a small amount of heavily clove spiced onion in oil and a small amount of coconut based stuff... Don't get me wrong, the food tasted ok but I can't imagine very authentic with the extremely mild flavour but 2-3 serves needed to make a meal... There are many better places to go to...

We ordered the pakoras, which came with some very tasty condiments, kottu rotti and the hoppers with lamb curry.<br/><br/>Everything was cooked well and extremely tasty. The lamb was tender and the kottu roti had just the right mix of meat / veg / rotti. The hoppers and condiments were also delicious.<br/><br/>We will definitely be back to try more dishes

Disappointed to say the least.   We have been keen to try for a while, and ventured in with high expectations. <br/><br/>To kick off,  I specifically asked if the calamari entree was crumbed or battered.  Was told NO, just plain and cooked in butter and spices.  It arrived, with a crumb, therefore I couldn't eat it.  Hubby ate it for me, but regretted it as it was oily.  <br/>Then, hubby's main course arrived (a Biryani, which he said was average).  After a while I I asked them to chase up my main.  Was starving at this point.  I had ordered grilled barramundi.  How long should that take?  Hubby had completely finished his main, gone outside for a cigarette, came back and I STILL didn't have my fish.   When it finally arrived it was dry and overcooked.  I managed to eat about half of it, because I was so hungry after waiting so long for it to arrive.  <br/>For the privilege of this very poor meal, paid $85.<br/>Very disappointing, and will not go back.

There are very few places in all of Sydney that cooks Sinhalese style Sri Lankan food and this is one of them. <br/><br/>The restaurant is in the quiet end of Glebe and ambiance is pleasing. Food is delectable. Very authentic. We tried Dhal, Kale, seafood friedrice, pork curry, egg plant, lumprais and fish curry. Deserts were sweet hoppers. <br/><br/>The curries were delicious, filling and the service friendly. The butterscotch and banana hopper was an absolute show stopper. Cannot recommend it enough. And finally can't wait to go back.

Firstly, the menu needs to be updated. Most of the prices are about $4 more than stated. Also some choices like Murtabak were not on it today when we were there. <br/><br/>From what I can tell, this is a lovely joint popular with locals. The lamb kuttu rothi was an interesting twist from those takeaways in Seven Hills or Toongabie. Lots of veggies with a spicy kick. Lamparais was interesting as well. Basically small grain rice with lotsa of veg and chicken wrapped in banana leaf then cooked until done. Never had it before I don’t want to knock other cultures, but I have to say there is an acquired taste/flavour to it. I’d describe it but I have no idea what or where that flavour comes from. Not for me. Kids had the tandoori wrap which was a pretty large generous portion. Request non spicy if it’s for your little ones.<br/><br/>“Interesting” is how I would describe my lunch experience. <br/><br/>

This was the second place we visited as part of The Glebe Tasting Treks. This was to be the main course of our progressive dinner. The aromas that greeted us entry were infectious and set us up for a lovely meal. Staff were pleasant and very accommodating. They don’t serve alcohol here however welcome to BYO. <br/><br/>We were all brought some refreshing Mango Lassi to begin. These were definitely needed as spice levels were higher than I’m usually accustomed to. The dairy in it has a nice cooling effect. We were all brought a plate of different hoppers including an egg one as well as some noodle ones and bread. We were surprised at the generosity of this as thought we’d be sharing a plate each. These were the perfect vessels to mop up the shared curries including a chicken one as well as a vegetarian one. Lots of other condiments accompanied these and made for a filling meal. <br/><br/>Might be slightly cramped inside and a bit loud once everyone started chatting but definitely a must try if in the area.

Food is yummy, staff are friendly and hospitable. It’s super affordable by not the best value for money. Was really disappointed with serving sizes. Expect more than what was served. :/

This is a really good take on Sri Lankan Cuisine and really caters to those are vegetarian.<br/>Atmosphere and environment is spot on 10/10 can feel crowded but that's part of the Sri Lankan charm where giving food should be cozy and home like.<br/>Here you will be able to select anything and not be dissapointed, for starters get the Vegetarian Cutlets or Polloss cutlets, the fish cutlets are just as good! More so, Lankan places that serve something called Hot Butter Cuttlefish, Calamari or Squid is something to really melt them taste buds and definitely give a the Fried White Bait a go! It'll go well with a beer.<br/>Vegetarian Biryani and Chicken Lamprais is definitely something to munch for mains, but there was so much food we ordered off the menu, literally every thing was great.<br/>Desert, oh man, Milk Hopper (Kiri Aappa) is a delicacy that just shows how different Lankan cuisine incorporates sweetness into food. There is also a paper cone sweet dosa like dish, served with ice cream. That is also something that won't dissapoint.<br/>Take your first date here and wow him/her. A vegetarian and Sri Lankan's haven for food.<br/>The owner is also a really kind and friendly person, who does make some amazing recommendations!

Visited the place with a Sri Lankan colleague. This was my first exposure to authentic Sri Lankan food and it was really good.Ordered the string hoppers with chickpeas curry and chicken kottu for mains. The wattalapam in dessert was the best.Going back for the dessert again soon!!

I was really disappointed with the manner in which the restaurant treated us. We were told by someone (probably some restaurant worker) that there is no place for us to sit. When we asked if we could wait, she said they have 3-4 guests who have made reservations. In a way, it worked out well as we discovered a lovely Thai restaurant called Tom Yum Tum Gang. However, I found the staff really inhospitable & I would never visit this place again as someone who doesn’t value their guests will not serve a good meal. I have traveled to Sri Lanka multiple times & even eaten in some of the best restaurants like Ministry of Crab & have come back impressed with their hospitality. It seems this restaurant is taking its position for granted.
Those Who Love To Eat
This place located on the lower end of Glebe Point Road. I was intrigued by this place as it was always packed.<br/>Booking on a Saturday night is a must, otherwise you won't get a seat.<br/>Came on a Saturday evening. It was full as usual and seating rather cramped. There isn't much ambiance but you go there for the food.<br/>What we ordered that night<br/>The food: for 2<br/>- string hoppers<br/>- vegetable dosai<br/>- Roti murtabak (chicken)<br/>- Mixed Fruit Saruwath<br/>I don't know, I felt like this place diluted the taste and spiciness. I really wanted to experience the real Sri Lankan food but got a Glebe whitewash version, which was a tad disappointing. Maybe you'd need to drive out to their Toongabbie branch and make the comparison. Who knows?!

Delicious, delicious food, friendly, efficient service and a fun vibe. Had string hoppers with delicious sambol and sauce, five curries - potato, kale, eggplant, dahl  & prawn - all scrumptious. Desserts: Watalappam (on the sweet side), fudge hopper (sweet also) and buttermilk hopper with berries. Can't wait to go back.

This place have been recommended by our friends from so long and finally today we hit them up while we were in Glebe and luckily they had time for dinner. The place was beautifully lit up and had a great seating capacity. We brought our own wine and enjoyed it with the Srilankan cuisine. They served amazing hoppers and kottu roti. Tasted great and the service was great too.<br/>Food - 4/5<br/>Ambience - 4/5<br/>Service - 4/5<br/>Value for Money - 4/5

For authentic Sri Lankan food like hoppers, dosas and curries, Toongabbie’s Dish has opened a second restaurant in Glebe!<br/><br/>The Classic hopper breakfast ($19.90) calls my name, there’s 2 plain and 1 egg hopper, sambol and chicken curry. I fricken love hoppers, they’re made of fermented rice flour and coconut milk batter, are crispy on the edges and satisfyingly thicker in the middle like a pancake or thin crepe. Use your hands and tear strips off to dunk in the curry and you’ll be one happy camper.

Had a great night at Dish with our family of 7. The only downside was we were squashed on a table for 6 and there was hardly any room for our food, but we didn't let this spoil our night as the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was authentic and tasty. Having visited Sri Lanka several times it was truly wonderful to experience the egg hoppers again, served with authentic tasting curries. The heat was not there, and although not all Sri Lankan food is hot, an option to request hotter curries would be a bonus. The goat curry was tender and we loved the biryani served with the lamb short ribs. The masala dosa was a lovely taste and texture sensation and all other dishes added a unique range of flavours and textures, including accompaniments, which you don't have to pay extra for. The restaurant is tiny and noisy, but this added to the atmosphere and you wouldn't come for a romantic dinner. Make sure you book as people were being turned away all night. We will be back as there is lots else to try, but I will always order an egg hopper as these shout Sri Lanka and are a perfect alternative to rice when filled with curries and dahl.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
There’s a queue on the street at the quieter north end of Glebe Point Road. Perhaps lured in by the simpering Broadsheet review, the crowd are here to try Sri Lankan Street Food at a second outlet for Toongabbie favourite, Dish. While the Western Sydney restaurant is known for value and authenticity, owner and chef Manjula Fernando has made some menu adaptations to accommodate his impressions about the diners of Glebe. While he is probably correct in assuming he needed to lose the bain-marie and cook-to-order, I am less convinced by the decision to tame the fiery cuisine. We start with Beef Kottu Roti ($19), which feels like Sri Lanka’s answer to pad Thai and Chinese fried rice. It takes flaky roti bread and chops it up with vegetables, beef and eggs on a flat hotplate, where the chopped pieces of bread stand in for noodles or grains of rice. The resulting mix is drizzled with a runny curry sauce, and has the feeling of genuine poverty cuisine where leftovers are cleverly re-imagined. Bulked out with cabbage, it gets a bit boring after a while, with only subtle heat and spice to play with. From the open kitchen packed with staff you’ll get a glimpse of...

Being the first authentic Sri Lankan restaurant in the inner city, Dish attracts the curious. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and creativity of the food, which is almost like Indian’s tastey, milder and fresher cousin. Who knew coconut goes so well with rottis and curries. <br/><br/>However, I could only give the venue 3 star because 1. they messed up our order, and we waited over an hour to receive our food and 2. They put us in the back room which was incredibly noisy due to the other patrons. You could barely think. <br/><br/>If you’re looking for a romantic date, look elsewhere. But if you want to try some delicious Sri Lankan food, there’s only one place to be.

Cold, unwelcoming service and food is just so-so. Won’t be going back. As for the Kola kenda dish water would have tasted better. Food was served lukewarm.
