Review Mr Stonebowl - Sydney

Whitnieee
A friend suggested this place and we came here for dinner. I was told that this place always has insane queue. We got there at 5 and were seated right away. Shortly after I noticed there was about 20 people waiting outside, so we were lucky and made it right before it got busy. Service was fast for us. Everything came out after max 15 minutes I’d say. Dinner for two with 4 dishes and drinks comes to about $54. Insanely cheap and good portions. I couldn’t be more happy. Fish in the soup was fresh. The buns were so tasty and juicy. Fried rice with abalone was just perfectly seasoned. Definitely recommend and will be back.

This place is fantastic. It had a nice dining atmosphere, though customer service was lacking, clear menu and easy ordering. There's so much on the menu. Everything we ordered came out quickly and presented beautifully. The salted egg prawns was delicious. Everything else tasted great too. We really enjoyed the meal here and will come back to try the other dishes on the menu. The portion was plentiful.

I love it!!! My always go-to Chinese restaurant. I love their sticky rice dumpling, crab meat and mango, the whole fish pot and their abalone dishes (sorry I cannot remember their names). Always have long queue but worth the wait. Not too pricey. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Burwood and Sydney in general.

Honestly for the price you're paying the food here is more than great. The only downside is the long line and that some more obscure dishes may be hit or miss. Again, prices are affordable so despite that we were happy to experiment with the menu every time we came. Some dishes I would not recommend would include the pan fried dumplings (better at Li long or taste of shanghai, the ones here don't have that much meat juice inside and too much bun), the Beijing sweet n sour pork, and the wagyu spring rolls. Also the whole fish in sweet red sauce was not great. Squid ink rice, deep fried egg plant and the garlic shoots are staples that won't let you down though!
Jay Chewy
Quite a nice place and great dishes. Decent pricing and good quantity of food. Only problem is that they don't take bookings and the lines can be quite bad and long. Go early to ensure you don't have to wait too long

So delicious! My family and friends all recommend this place. Fast service, so many choices and great value for money. We really loved the deep fried eggplant and octopus and mushroom cold dish. It gets super busy so obviously it might take time to get the attention of wait staff. The service style in Chinese restaurants is generally different to Western dining. You usually flag/call the wait staff, they don’t regularly check in on you. Also they don’t take reservations so be prepared to line up. I’m definitely coming back!

I went out with my friends on last Thursday. At that time, we need to wait around 45 mins since it was full table already. Actually, we can understand that since it is a good restaurant for family or friends. Food was ok with fast service, lots of options and a standard quality. The portion is big so recommend not ordering a lot. Average was not expensive, especially when you go with a big group. You can share food and everything very easy.
Kim Nguy
One of the best fusion Chinese restaurants around. They have a good range of meals on the menu to suit almost anyone. This places fills up quickly as soon as the door opens for dinner at 5pm, otherwise you'll need to take a ticket and wait for a table..Service and ambience is very good since moving to their new location about 100m from Westfield. Highly recommended if your after Chinese food with a twist.

This cosy place is becoming a family favorite! There is a wide range of Chinese dishes on offer that are both reasonably priced and generously portioned. The wagyu beef (melts in your mouth kind) and truffle fried rice are my go-tos. The fried eggplant was also apparently tasty too but the serving portion may have been a bit much.
Service is always friendly and efficient. Even during busy periods, you can start selecting your order, via the order form, while you are waiting outside. Only downside is that, for now at least, due to covid reasons, the eating bowls, utensils and cups are all disposable and plastic (which kind of cheapens the experience and is not environmentally friendly imo).

Delicious foods, friendly service, excellent value! I will definitely go back as the foods that I ate were so tasty: Singaporean Style Barramundi, Garlic Prawn with Squid Ink Rice, Xiao Long Baos.

Tip: Try to go there early to avoid lines
Lily
It was my first time at Mr Stonebowl and I was pleasantly surprised how busy they were. We got a special item which was the garlic, Mud Crab noodles. The crab was fresh but it wasn’t amazing as it probably needed a little bit more coating of sauce. They also had great Xiao Long Bao dumplings and & rice dishes. Their signature soup wrapped in the cellophane was also great! Not bad at all.
Anny
Without a doubt, one of the best Chinese restaurant establishment in sydney! Dishes are delicious and reasonably priced.
Ellie Zilinsky
Great food although less amazing than expected due to the massive lines which are always out the door. I’m sure there are other meals though which are amazing! Still highly suggested as there are many choices to choose from and all look incredible!

Generous portion sizes at affordable prices. Dined here on a weekday for lunch so we had the benefit of fast service. I’ve heard that for dinner and on weekends, the wait can be up to an hour and they don’t take bookings.

Xiao long bao 5 ⭐️: it’s hard to go wrong with soupy pork dumplings. Generous serving size and served warm so as to not burn your tongue.
Pan fried pork buns 5 ⭐️: I think they might be the best pork buns I’ve ever had. Perfect ratio between meat filling and bun. Soup was hot and so meaty. Amazing
Fried eggplant in bread crumbs 1 ⭐️: I wanted to try this dish because I saw that a lot of people had ordered it but it was extremely disappointing. Lacked so much flavour that I couldn’t even tell it was eggplant. Crumbs were slightly sweet possibly sugared. Serving size was very generous
Creamy garlic prawn in squid ink rice 1 ⭐️: I thought this was extremely overhyped. The rice had no real flavour it was just creamy. Prawns also lacked flavour. No garlic flavour as suggested
Fried razor clams in truffle salt 4 ⭐️: loved this flavour. Perfect amount of salts and other aromatics. Super crunchy - just so enjoyable to eat. Would recommend pairing with a basic rice or noodle dish

Overall, good experience. Would definitely come back to try more seafood and specialities. I’d recommend going in groups because the serving size is huge and you can try more dishes!
Kimz
Went to this place a few years ago and really liked the food then. We revisited this place again a couple of weeks ago, and it was very disappointing. If customers could tell seafood wasn't very fresh though all that heavy seasoning...
A
The food was great! We ordered a seafood soup, squid ink fried rice and some cute custard buns that were shaped into bears. Even though loud restaurants aren't my thing, I would definitely come back here to eat!
Cynthiaeats_
Fantastic food that really showcases asian flavours in a modern way. Presentation was phenomenal and food is reasonably priced. The wait is ridiculously long though - 45 mins for a table of 12 at 5pm on a Sunday night. If you’re able to book in advance then do so!

If you'd like to read more of my reviews, please check out my Zomato page and visit @cynthiaeats_ on Instagram for more photos!

I ordered Singapore Chilli Sauce with mud crab, tofu homemade with fin fish and prawn stir fried with asparagus. The tofu and prawn are quite delicious, however mud crab is not fresh, like died one. Im so disappointing..
Should not order Mud Crab which the staff recommended its to me. Huzmmm
Sougata Khan
Had the seafood soup and a few other dishes but the soup stood out the most. Everything looks so good as well. Perfect for your Instagram. Service is a bit rushed as they always have long queues waiting. Can't blame them I guess

We used to come here quite often when it first opened but hadn't been here in awhile. Heard they had some new dishes made the mistake of checking it out. The whole experience from the moment I put my name down for a table to when I left, was THE worst experience I've had at any restaurant, and reminded me why I haven't been here in awhile. Their sole purpose is to get as many people in and out as quickly as possible. The atmosphere was like a fast food joint. They wanted me to order before I was even seated, which I don't normally mind, however we weren't ready and they kept pressuring and rushing us. After we sat down, more rushing. When we started eating, the waitresses would comb through the tables and look for any signs of us finishing. Our plates were taken away even before we had finished - not even kidding - the last taco was taken off the plate and placed on the table. When we were down to 2 dishes, the waitress came up and asked if we wanted to take away the rest. Seriously? We were still eating?
All throughout the meal there was constant shouting and pressure to finish as quick as possible. I had a headache from all the yelling. It felt like I was sitting in a market and being herded out as quickly as possible. Once we had eaten, they quickly took away our plates and had already set the table for the next customers. EVEN BEFORE WE HAD LEFT. SERIOUSLY? That was the straw that broke the camels back. Never again will I come here.

So you're wondering, is the food good? Quite frankly, no. The food used to be good when it first opened however the quality has since significantly deteriorated. Everything was overly salty and the famous fried eggplant was soggy and oily. Yes, the food looks creative and enticing on the menu, but the taste is far from the glossy photos.

If you want to be treated like animals, then go ahead and come here. But be warned that the food will not make up for the way you are treated. Management seriously needs to change the way they run the place otherwise the hype will wear off and people will eventually stop coming due to the service.

Try their new menu such as deep fried black sesame yuan tang, sweet n spicy ribs, truffle clam. They are amazing. This place one of my Asian restaurant that I love. The only thing that you need to know that you need to come early because the queue quite crazy and they don’t reserve booking
Hailey Ngo
Delicious! I have been here many times with my friends and love the food in here! Recommend for you to go with 4 or 5 people to have more choices to eat and save money! It’s suitable with your family as well! Highly recommend for the restaurant in Burwood!
Meowktail
Okay Chinese restaurant - deviates from traditional cuisine and appeals to millenials with more contemporary dishes such as shrimp fried black rice which (unpopular opinion) is overhyped; flavour was a bit bland with a tartare-ish sauce spread over plain rice. Pancakes were nice and crispy with scallion aroma, beef hotpot was good but very spicy.
1900.
Great food in generous portion. This place has always been one of the most popular restaurant in Burwood, have tried several times before writing this review. Lost previous photos. The squid ink rice stonebowl is my fav and I'd definitely recommend it. Jelly fish salad and the fried cod with pumpkin were also good. Overall it's a good place to go for dinner but make sure you arrive early, otherwise you will need to wait for a long time
Christina Nguyen
YUM YUMMMM the food came out quick and the 5 of us were satisfied and full. everyone enjoyed the chicken but i personally loved the noodles and prawns. there was also steamed pork and chives dumplings which were amazing !!! everything that we ordered was great. the rice that came out really took us by surprise though, just a massive bowl placed on our table.
Daniel Zhao
Oft this place is pretty good if you want some chinese food. their signature is the squid ink rice which is pretty nice and unique. They are currently having a special on Singaporean chilli crab and is a must try if you love crab.

Service is prompt and nice.

Mr. D
Great place for dinner, never disappoints. The missus and I got the singaporean chilli barramundi which was deep fried but still nice and soft on the inside very nice especially in chilli sauce a bit overly sweet but each to their own. The squid ink fried rice with prawns came in a huge portion pretty good for those really hungry. Taste like normal fried rice but with the colouring. All the portions here seem quite big but not overly expensive. Good value for money, portion wise I would say.
Jasmine
So many choices at such cheap prices! Food are generally very tasty though on the oily side. My go to are the xiao long bao, deep fried dumplings, singaporean sauce barramundi and the pork intestine
Jasmine C
Have heard this place being popular for a while, finally checked it out last Friday.
The service was very fast, but not necessarily good, two girls sitting next to us got challenged by asking for additional tissues.

The dishes were generally good and the portion was generous. However being a 4.5 star place I am not impressed...
EL
Always a line up at this place! It's a good place to come with a few people to share a bit of everything. Serving size is quite generous and price is reasonable. Food is pretty good but slightly overated.
Panda Lover
Long long long queue! Food was really good and price was reasonable. All the dishes were tasty and served in generous sizes! If the waiting time could be shorter I think I will be back again.

It is a quite delicious temple of modern Chinese cuisine. Busy usually so you will get asked to share tables. Staff work so fast you cannot really tell if they are friendly or not. Xihuahua 🐶 ordered all the dishes which turn out to be all good.

Pot stickers are super good with great value. Lots of hot jus inside too.

Prawn coating is a bit too sweet to my liking.

Beef is tender and flavorful but some bits are too chewy because of tendons and it can be quite fatty.
Manz
Before you even get to taste their food, you have to admire the super efficiency of their system. Super crowded, it was 6pm Sunday and the waiting list is already 16 tables long. We waited for about 35 mins, but the waiting time is not wasted. You get the order form & there’s a couple of menu outside, so you fill out your order while waiting. Once you move up the queue close to being seated, they take your order to the kitchen, so the food started arriving at the table within 5 mins of us sitting down. The food themselves were all delicious, loved the pork ribs & deep fried mushrooms. Downside of their super efficiency is that we couldn’t order more food after we sat down and they’re very keen to clean up your table once you’re finished eating.

Would have given 4.5. Ambience good, food great, service excellent.

We went here for dinner. When we first arrived there were people queuing up ahead of us. Regardless, the line moved quickly. First impression of ambience was it quite loud and lively but comfortable. We were seated quickly and we were given the opportunity to take orders while we waited.

The food was great, we ordered 5 dishes between the 6 of us. Have forgotten the names of the dishes, apart from the garlic prawn in stir fried rice in squid ink sauce which I recommend, and the Xiao long bao, which was okay, probably better in other restaurants.

The service was a treat. Given the narrow shape of the room. Staff were walking up and down the aisle frequently. Picking up empty dishes, refilling waters and attending to questions. They were welcoming and showed a lot of care.

Would definitely come back to try other dishes.
Linda
Came here for dinner and I really liked this place!
We came around 5:30pm on a Thursday night and it wasn’t as packed as the time we had left. The restaurant got busy really fast and there was a queue outside waiting to be seated. Best to go earlier on in the night as the restaurant is small as well.

Their menu is quite extensive but we opted for the
• Xiao long bao
• Panda custard steamed bun
• Garlic prawn with stir fried rice in squid ink sauce
• Black pepper beef ribs with mushroom

Will be coming back to try other dishes :)

Amazing food at Mr Stonebowl, one of the best Chinese restaurants that i've had. We had a stir fry king prawn with vermicelli and Singapore style crab with buns, which were nice and juicy, strongly recommended. We also had the beef, ink rice with prawn and seafood and vegetables soup is also recommended. The price is quite high but the quality is really good. I'll comeback next time
Lien Nguyen
A popular joint on Burwood road that gets quite busy during peak dining times - get in early or later if you don't want to wait ! The menu is extensive here from dumplings, to stir fry dishes and their popular stone bowl dish. The serving portions are generous for what you pay for and the food is delicious. The service is prompt, once you sit down you're provided with a menu and ordering food. The food comes out shortly after you've placed your ordered. I would revisit again if i'm in the areas and craving xiao long baos - because they were juicy and bursting with flavours. I do think they're comparable to Din Tai Fung's baos.
Annee
Food is not overhyped at all

I recommend this place highly to at least try once even if the queue is long

Tip: arrive at least 15 minutes before opening and you will more than likely get a spot
Sharon
Over hyped and oily Chinese food. It doesn’t taste like anything special to me. Also, the price for each dish is quite high. I had it once but it didn’t make me want to go back.
Karen Lim
Food is good and inexpensive. The staff there are really attentive and friendly too! Love the selections of food available. Highly recommended!
Nichola
Staff were welcoming and food was good for the price. Had Wagyu Beef with cayenne peppers, XLB and Prawn Dumplings. 9 XLBs and 6 prawn dumplings were generous for two people. Everything came out relatively on time. Ambience wasn't too bad. Would probably go one more time to try other items.

The food was really bad both vegetarian and nonvegetarian dishes we ordered .It was suggested by one of their staff vegetarian was really bad eggplant was soggy and beans were floating in oil that taste was of oil even nonveg was so bad in taste .overall very bad experience for price one pays definitely won't recommend to anyone

Amazing food at Mr stonebowl, one of the best Chinese fusion that I've ever had. The fish and Wagyu is recommended, it was two excellent dish. The price was affordable as well, a while fish under 20 dollars which is a rare sight. All the dish were perfect, there was different textures and flavours within each dish.

The place was full and we had to wait for 20 minutes. Although we have to wait it was worth it to wait for us to dine here. I would recommend this place to anyone for lunch or dinner.

Service 8/10
Environment 8/10
Food 10/10

An amazing place serving you fresh, hot delicacies from Shanghai. The price point of this restaurant is relatively cheap given the quality and proportion of the dishes. Especially the Xiao Long Baos and Pan Fried Pork Buns! Will also definitely recommend the Squid Ink Rice as it’s one the most popular items on the menu!
Shannon
There's always a massive lineup and hype for Mr Stone bowl and after eating there, i understand why. The restaurant gives out great portion sizes and the dishes we tried; the garlic prawn steamed with fried rice in squid ink and the piggy buns were delicious. Would definitely recommend!
Strawberry_vee
Always enjoy the dishes from Mr Stonebowl, I’ve tried many dishes and everything tasted great. Only thing is there’s always a massive queue.
JDub
Nice place for fusion Chinese, we had whole barramundi, which was good and the sauce was rich, but not too greasy and very flavoursome. We also had the beef, which was OK, but the texture of the beef wasn’t great and it wasn’t spicy at all. Overall happy with the meal and would go back again.
Tram
With crazy long queues, the hype and demand for Mr Stonebowl is real! It’s totally worth a visit as the food was so delicious and mouth watering!

The Pan Fried Dumplings was by far my favourite and I highly recommend! Some reviewers on Zomato recommended the Deep Fried Eggplant and it did not disappoint. The texture from the breadcrumbs made it a little crunchy but still soft inside. The Special Spicy Fried Rice wasn’t anything special but the Traditional Fuan Pork Ribs was so delicious! The coated flavour on the ribs was really addictive. We also ordered the Pig Faced Steamed Bun. This was a little underwhelming as it turned out the filling is custard and is not a savoury dish. Nonetheless, the custard tasted so good when it was warm!

The proportions of the dishes are quite large and easily shared. Going as a group is a great way to try all the different dishes but expect a long queue. My group of 3 had to wait 1 hour to be seated on a Sunday but lowkey worth it!
Kellie W
Really loved the xiao long bao and pan fried pork buns. Although the deep fried eggplant was a recommendation, it was a hit for me. It was covered in a cheese breadcrumb mixture which I found sickening after a few bites.

But, the deep fried oyster mushrooms and spicy fried rice were delicious! Would come back to try the garlic prawns and stir fried squid ink rice.
Owin Camero
Mr Stone Bowl delivers large portions and great flavour. Recommended to go in a big group or an empty stomach. We ordered two popular dishes squid ink fried rice and pan fried pork buns and we were both stuffed! Both are highly recommended! Will be back to try more.
YUXIPANDA
Ok guys the serving sizes at Mr Stonebowl are just unreal. We came here for dinner and left with very happy tummys! Make sure to come early to get a spot.
Jessie
Went on a Saturday and waited 1.5 hours before being seated. Staff was friendly and service was relatively quick, but food was quite average. Wasn’t bad - just underwhelming according to reviews.
Sophia Peach
I went there once... the line was really long we waited for like one hour to get a table. Food was reasonable but service was alright.

I would like to come back if they take booking.
Julie Nguyen
Whenever I go Burwood for dinner I always see this place packed with people and there’s normally like a line of people waiting outside as well. Finally got the chance to try it and I left feeling very pleased with my feed and will definitely be back (with more friends next time) to try other items on the extensive menu! Had the XLB (skin was thin, filling was J00c3y very comparable to the DTF one), pan fried buns (J00c3y filling, was crisp at the bottom 👌🏿) and the garlic shrimp which was interesting (I’ve never had anything like this before but I kept wanting more). Service is fast even though there is a wait - there’s a menu and some pencils at the door so you can decide what to order while you queue in line which is great!
Mary Tran
Portions are large, good for sharing and best to eat with a group of 3-4 people. The fried eggplant was crunchy but a little oily on the inside. Squid ink rice with prawns were quite bland, nothing that special. However, the Singapore style barramundi was a very popular dish amongst customers, the sauce was nice and good to eat with rice. I recommend the pot sticker dumplings, they were crisp and hot, filled with soup. The menu is extensive, lots to order and would come back to try other dishes.
Brutal_AF
Such a big variety on their menu~

Surprised to see how busy they were for a Tuesday night.

Portions are big!

Wouldn't say I loved each dish, but it's not bad considering the size and price.

The fried eggplant was a little too oily and salty for my liking.

Overall good place to eat with a group of people.
Mai Anh Nguyen
Wow the wait was driving us crazy. I dont mind waiting but i would mind if they just called our number and didnt let us in then kept calling other numbers. Anyway we ended up waiting for an hour and kept seeing other people who came later went into the restaurant first. Understand it could be busy but you just cant call a number and do not let people in. Thanks and never go back.
William
pretty tasty but their wait is super long and they don’t let u in unless all people are there. staff are pretty unfriendly and not sure how clean the kitchen would be
FancyNancy
Loved this place worth the hour wait to get in. Food was amazing except the fried eggplant not a fan of all the breadcrumbs or whatever it was. Had the best wontons in chilli oil.
Pignpork.sydney
We have been dining in since 2016 when it first newly opened in Burwood and it has been a regular place for my missus and I to have lunch and mostly dinner.
We still drop by once a while now and basically we also know most of the staff who works there too. All of them are very friendly and helpful. Sometimes they might act a bit tense or forgetful but it is only because the place is too too busy everyday and night, it’s a very tiring job too and as a customer, we have to be a bit understanding as they already trying and doing their best to serve everyone equally good.
The Singapore Style Barramundi is a MUST for us to order each and everytime. It’s the nicest dish of all... the sweet and spicy sauce matches the fried barramundi perfectly. It’s also great dipping sauce along with jasmine rice. Along comes the Braised Pork Belly which the meat simply melt in your mouth ! Cook to the perfection and not too sweet at all. They do comes with green sprout and a few quail eggs. Marvellous dish !!
We love the Singapore Style Crab too both sauce are quite similar only one is with fish and the other with crab. It’s not really expensive compare to the rest of the restaurant nearby which sell similar crab. The cheapest I once ate was $ 38 per kg.
I personally love the Stir Fried Lamb with Mint Leaves which leaves a warmth aromatic flavour of mint freshness aftertaste. Lamb is not smelly too that’s what important.
The Deep Fried Eggplant in Bread Crumb and Garlic Sauce is too heavy for us. Very good dish but if you are to order this, cut off one or two for confirm you wouldn’t gonna finish everything as the eggplant is very very filling.
The Garlic Prawn Steamed with Sticky Rice is not to be miss out too. Full flavoured of garlic and grey colour rice from the octopus ink which mixed together makes everything so freaking tasty!
The only dish we feel it’s not worth is the Wonton in Red Chilli Oil sauce.... wonton skin is too thick and it’s over-steamed which makes the whole dish taste soggy.
All the portion is quite large so if you are going only for 2 people, do not order too much... I guarantee you that you wouldn’t be able to finish all of it. I saw a lot of other customers ordered 4 or 5 dishes with only 2 people dine in. In the end all need to pack for takeaway.
Be prepare for at least 1 hour of waiting time and it might gets up to 1.5 hours during the weekend.
They don’t take table reservation and they don’t have any table time limit so be a bit courtesy to move your ass after finish the meal and takes the conversation elsewhere for there are plenty of other people waiting outside to savour the food too.

Before I went to this restaurant, I was warned that it gets very busy during dinner time so I decided to get there a little earlier at 5pm on a Friday night. My partner and I ordered the garlic prawn and squid ink rice, cold noodles and prawn dumplings. The cold noodles with chicken was fresh but had a slight banana taste to it, which may have just been my tastebuds playing tricks. The famous squid ink rice was very pleasant but became quite sickening after but the flavours were very interesting and balanced. Overall, a good experience but probably won't come here again since the dishes were quite heavy.

Sweet Potato & Vermicelli w/ Kombu : 😊 Good
Eggplant in Breadcrumbs : 😍 Amazing
Garlic Prawn w/ Squid Ink Rice : 😁 Great
Pig Face Bun : 😁 Great
Green Rose Tea : 😁 Great

Overall a great experience. Food servings are quite large and ideally for sharing unless of course you’re able to eat a lot. The Deep Fried Eggplant was to die for. The cheesy breadcrumb that it’s coated in is so addicting. Everything else was also lovely. Quick note, the Pig Face Bun is filled with custard. It doesn’t say anywhere (unless I’m blind) that it’s a sweet dish best eaten after your main meal.
Betty Yu
Although we had to wait for half an hour during peak hours, the food was still very delicious. We ordered while we were waiting to be seated so the food came fast!Worth the wait!Recommend to come here earlier than the lunch peak hours so you don't have to wait .
Rachel Wong
Squid ink with garlic prawns is amazing. A lot of people ordered the fried eggplant but it wasnt to my taste. I loved the lamb stew but they do not cook it anymore which is a pity! Overall, really great service and food. They also have a lot of interesting concepts and new foods to try!
Shirley
The food is crazy delicious guys! There are also quirky and uncommon Chinese dishes that you can’t find anywhere else. The staff are very attentive and friendly (although they practically watch you eat) but I’m definitely going back for more dishes. Probably best with a group of people so you can try more! Note: The rose green tea drink and squid ink rice with fried prawns are a must have!
Susan
Prompt service and amazing food. Went here for lunch on a Monday and it wasn’t too busy which was good. Decided to order the recommended dishes and they were delicious. The deep fried eggplant was to die for ! It’s unlike your typical deep fried eggplant with a slight cheese flavour. The garlic prawn was also nice with the squid ink rice. I will definitely be back to try other food on the menu ✌🏼.

Recommended by friends about this restaurant, so I decided to had lunch on Sunday afternoon, wasn’t too busy but not that quiet. Food was good, I would rate for 3.5 if I can.

The pan fried pork bun was fine, with the crunch underneath and the pork fillings pretty rich in spice, but nothing really outstanding, the presentation was really attractive

Garlic prawn with squid ink fried rice the most unique one turned out to be okay, I can taste just a bit of the squid ink feels, but nothing really different, and the prawn wasn’t really rich of taste.

Deep fried eggplant 🍆 was good, crunchy and a bit of sweet and salty.

Wagyu beef with chips was the new dish, the meat was juicy and so rich in spice, I smell like a bit of Mexican style dishes, but the taste was good. The chips doesn’t really add substance, would reckon to use lettuce cup instead.

Portion was huge and price was worth the portion and the taste. Overall quite good, service was quite attentive, although some of the staffs was kinda rude (but that what happens to most similar restaurant).

It’s good, but may be will be back some other time later!
Jennifer Chen
It was very nice and yummy, expect need to wait very long. But it is value because the food was fantastic. We have 3 people, these three dish plus a desert was so full.
Michelle
Good food however pretty pricy, a bit oily as well.
Long wait time for eat in and takeaway understandable as they are always filled with people.
Maybe more seating can be arranged outside.
Staff is polite when I came.
JJfoodie
Enjoyed the honey glazed pork that I ordered. However, I wasn’t a fan of the spicy soup that had Ox tongue in it. I was looking forward to the dish but it didn’t taste as pleasant. The food there is pretty average to good, and the staff was extremely nice and patient. (:

Went a couple weeks ago on a Sunday. After finally stepping in the doors after waiting 30 minutes, first thing we noticed was our shoes sticking to the floor. We were seated near the back and there was this putrid stench which they later blamed on undisposed garbage.

We ordered spicy duck feet with mint leaves, shengjianbao, xiaolongbao, deep fried eggplant in breadcrumb, king prawn with salty egg yolks and Mongolian lamb. Value was very good which is a big plus !

Spicy duck feet was really nice and peppery and so was deep fried eggplant (huge serving - great value !) and the king prawn and lamb was good too. Unfortunately, the xiaolongbao and the pan fried pork buns were a massive letdown .The meat had a real awful medicinal taste about them. They were a little bitter, not to mention the fact that the skin on the xiaolongbao was quite thick. Cannot compare to Shanghainese restaurants in Ashfield like New Shanghai and Taste of Shanghai.

All in all, pretty disappointing especially considering the disgusting smell, long wait, discourteous staff and ruined shoes.
Anna
Great fusion Chinese cuisine with generous servings at an affordable price. I have been here twice and the squid ink fried rice with prawns and fried eggplant is a must order! The Singaporean style barramundi tastes decent but the fish isn't very fresh (wouldn't expect it to be for the price). The pan fried buns are better than the xiao long bao here. Get there early to avoid the long queues!

The spicy and sour soup was ok...the flavour was quite subtle though...had better ones else where. The “famous “ Singapore fish was way too sweet! The crab meat tofu was super salty! I couldn’t even taste any crab flavour or find any crab meat at all! The price was good. But the flavour wasn’t the best.

Omg! Super impressive! I wanna have another try!

No wander why so many people wait outside!

Modern Chinese food 🥘! Literally, lots of food using stone bowl as container so they called itself Mr. Stonebowl.

Literally every dish is fantastic! But if force me to give a recommendation: duck feet in homemade chill sauce, ham&tofu clear soup 🍲, Shanghai braised pork belly, tofu with salty egg yolks

Omg... can’t name it! Try!
Visited Mr Stonebowl on a Saturday evening at around 6pm and there was a line. We had to wait for about 30 minutes before we were seated. The food itself is very tasty and I would describe it as a fusion Chinese taste with a twist. Each dish is so unique and special and they all taste amazing! The squid ink fried rice with prawns looks very different and was a very fun experience but I wouldn't say that it's original. However, it is still very delicious. The Singapore style barramundi was very delicious too! The menu advised that it was spicy but I have to say I tasted almost no spice - tasted more of a tomato sauce instead but was still very good! The braised pork belly was really delicious too and came with quail eggs and watercress which we found very refreshing. The salted egg calamari is delicious but comes in a very small portion with some salad leaves. The standout dish would have to be the fried eggplant with breadcrumbs. The portion size is very big and so worth its price. The milk tea powder is so unique and complements the eggplant so well (I am not fond of eggplant at all but this dish was so good - it was not gooey at all). Would highly recommend ordering this one.

The wait staff were very rushed and the environment of the restaurant is not very conducive for bringing friends to chat with. It is very loud in there as everyone is talking over each other and the wait staff are yelling orders back and forth. If you can overcome this, the food experience will be well worth it.

The store opens at 5pm in the afternoon and if you are looking for a dinner place I would recommend lining up 30 minutes - 1 hour before you plan to eat as there is always a line.

The line was crazy for this place. Was it worth the wait? Probably for the first time yes. Of course we had to order the squid ink fried rice with prawns. I would have loved it if there was more cream sauce mixed in with the rice. Because once the top was finished the rice was dry and bland below.

We also ordered the breadcrumb eggplabt. It came as a huge portion size. It was really delicious and very cheesey. It was almost like it was crumbed with cheese. Powdery cheese. It was really crispy and so must ve eaten when hot. Dont take this away. It would be a waste.

We also got pig intestines. It was suprisingly delicious. The zucchini in it was bitter. Im not sure why but addictive. The dish was very VERY oily but worth a try if you come here.

As for the xiao long bao... i didnt really like it. It didnt taste very authentic shanghainese. Sort of had a strange taste. There was a large amount of ginger in it.

We also got some type of fish in cream sauce. Most of the dishes here have heavy cheesey cream so lactose intolerant people beware!

The food here i think is quite cheap for the portion size. I think it would be most enjoyed with a group of people so you can try a few items on the menu.

In total. the bill came to about $60 for three people.

Food : -1
Service 1

Went to Mr Stonebowl for lunch today . I have been to this restaurant before and there has always been dishes that were below my expectations .

I am not a picky eater however the dishes today was just appalling.
The lamb with rosemary sauce dish came out like it has been half eaten by someone. We called the waitress to address this problem however she said you have eaten it yourselves. But we didn't eat the dish because it just looked so unappetising and dry like it has been left out for days. We gave it a shot and not surprised, it tasted dry , extremely salt (probably to hide the off taste) and not edible. We asked if there would be a refund however they wouldn't allow to refund the dish, even though the dish was evidently off and looked as if it was half eaten. Under Australian Consumer law, even goods and services could be returned... clearly they do not understand the law.
The fish fillet congee tasted like dishwater and rice.

This was a very disappointing experience. I will not recommend this restaurant as it is very low quality . I will not be returning to this restaurant ever again.

The Service was very pushy and loud. They never pay attention to customers and try to push you along so other people in the line could come in.

We had to wait for around 20 minutes to get into this place because of how busy it was. But it made me even more excited for the food because I have been hearing from a friend on how good the food is. I came with high expectations and Mr. Stonebowl blew me away! Food is amazing, so flavourful and creative. We ordered several dishes such as garlic prawns with squid ink rice, fish dish in hot and sour soup, egg plant dish and something else. Presentation were great and food taste amazing. Recommended!

Love this restaurant, the portion are big and its really affordable. I thought 3 dishes wont be enough, so I order 1 more dish that I couldn’t finish all of them and asked for containers😂
-Fried eggplant with breadcrumbs: this dish is so addictive, I couldn’t stop eating it
-Squid ink fried rice with prawns: it looks so good and unique, but not special at all🙁
-Singapore style barramundi: the sauce compliments the fish so well
-Pan fried pork buns: there are other places that serve better pan fried bun, but it tastes okay and the pork really similar with xiao long bao

However, I dont really like the service. After I paid, they were like in hurry taking out our plates even though I was busy filling the containers with the leftover food. They were like asking us to go even though there was no queue outside
Constant Cravings
I came across Mr. Stonebowl on Instagram (aka the best way to discover more food) and despite reading about the long lineups, I decided to brave them on a Sunday night. Luckily we only had 2 people so we got in after 10 mins! Way ahead of the various other people standing around. Stuff like this just makes my day since I hate waiting! We went to the Mr. Stonebowl location in Burwood and it’s a few blocks from the train station.

The squid ink rice keeps drawing me back! I have visited 3 times and it never fails to disappoint. There’s always a queue for this place so be prepared! One of my favourite places to dine in Burwood :)

Stonebowl is a popular Chinese eatery on Burwood Road which attracts scores of hungry diners every lunchtime. The simple eatery features a functionalist interior with wooden furniture and black metal chairs. Service is quick and at times fuzzy.

My mate and I visited the crowded eatery a couple of weeks ago. We ordered some pan fried buns and Singaporean-style fried barramundi. On the one hand, the barramundi was probably the freshest I had in ages in Sydney. Each bite on the fish meat is a supreme taste of the ocean. However, the sour and sweet sauce was awkward as I had never tasted any gravy like that from Singapore and the onslaught of acidic pineapples made me hold back from devouring the whole fish.

On the other hand, the pan fried buns were absolutely awful. The flour was either not mixed properly or the thawing made the buns powdery and chunky. Absolutely terrible. Toilet Cleanliness can be improved too.

I’ve tried quite a few dishes here. Their potion is big and generous. I liked most of dishes but squid ink rice was not really my thing.
Good service, reasonable price.

Value for money and great food. Must try the fried dumplings, eggplant and fish! Almost daily there is a line but It’s worth the wait!

Will I go back ? Absolutely!

Took a ticket and waited 45minutes for a table of three at 6:30pm on a Thursday evening. The place was packed. Picked up a menu and selected our dishes while we waited outside. As our time neared we were asked if we wouldn’t mind squeezing onto a table meant for two or wait for a larger table, but the further wait time would be unknown. We took the former. Inside was very noisy and loud, with banter from fellow patrons and the wait staff yelling from the front door in mandarin. Tables were packed tight and close to one another. We were literally sharing a table with the couple next to us. But table was alright as there was a sofa chair that could accommodate two okay by the wall. Food came out fairly quickly. We ordered the Singaporean barramundi, Xiao long bao, deep fried eggplant in breadcrumbs and the mushroom soup. Fish was nice. Sauce tasty. I would recommend some rice or buns to lap up the sauce, as eating on its own was a bit salty. Soup was ho hum. Nothing more than what it was. A few rehydrated mushrooms and small pork bone bits. The baos were decent. Slightly different taste from other places we’ve tried with a bit of a herbal spice? to it. Eggplant was different. Covered in breadcrumbs and dusted with garlic powder and perhaps cheese powder, these were nice, soft and tasty, but mouth feel a bit strange at first as the coating was a little too much. They grew on me however and I devoured them. This placed much hyped about from previous reviews was good but not all that it cracked up to be. Would I wait wait 45minutes again, perhaps not. I would go back as long as there was minimal wait as the price for three of us was just under $50 and the food was alright.

The pictures attached are not my own. They were taken from other Zomato users to give you an idea of what the dishes look like.

I have been here twice and its fantastic. its cheap and the portions are huge. My favourite items are the Garlic Prawns with stir fried rice in squid ink, Pan fried pork buns , king prawn vermicelli and the deep fried eggplant. Get there just before it opens and put your name down asap. be ready to order and the food comes out really quickly. A great palce if you dont want to mess around.

Love the food here! Tasty and reasonably priced! The only drawback is the place is quite small and there's usually a long queue to try to get in. My favorites are the garlic prawns in squid ink fried rice (something a bit different), the Singapore style whole barramundi and the pork dumplings. Need to go back for more!

💮$18.80 Garlic Prawns with stir fried rice in squid ink (#68)
💮$8.80 Pan fried pork buns (9pcs) (#15)
💮$15.80 Mongolian Lamb (#83)
💮$16.80 Salt & pepper soft shell crab (#104)
——
Great ambience, always packed with fresh food. However, it’s very pricey for a student. Would only go in a group. The soft shell crab is delicious 🦀! The black rice dish (#68) is an unusual highlight 🍤🍚! The Mongolian beef was tasty and not spicy whatsoever (as I like it) 🐑! And I must say 9 dumplings for $8.80 was quite affordable 🥟!

Would recommend to try if at Burwood.

It was our first time at Mr Stonebowl and we were amazed by the wide range of hot pot dishes. The garlic prawn squid rice and the Singaporean barramundi were yum. Will definitely go there again

I love this place so much, defs get the creamy garlic prawn with squid ink rice and the fried tofu w scallop dishes. Only downside is the wait so make sure you get there early.

Come early to avoid queque, before 12pm for lunch. I ordered garlic prawn with stir fried rice in squid ink, tofu with salty egg yolks and pan fried pork bun. Tasty food.
-The garlic prawn fried rice in squid ink: chewy texture and something different from normal fried rice. There's white sauce on top of it and the rice keep warm inside the stonebowl. You'll full quickly.
-Tofu with salty egg yolks: crispy skin and soft inside. Don't put straight in your mouth while still hot.
-Pan fried pork bun: Burst with liquid and juicy inside. Use the spoon to eat the bun, so you can save the liquid going everywhere. Peel the top with chopstick, suck the juice and enjoy the rest.

Just became one of my favorite Chinese food in the town... tasty and much creative than other new food which pop out in the recent years. 墨鱼汁饭 and Ox tail are must try!

The food itself is great and comes out really quickly, and steaming hot. The service on the other hand is very rough and rushed, but that's to be expected from a busy chinese restaurant. I've been quite lucky in that every time I've gone here, I haven't had to wait long at all (max 10 minutes), but I think my rating would go down if I had to wait for any longer than 30 mins.

We actually visited the newly opened one in Chatswood, called 'Mr. Stonepot', with the same menu. We ordered the Ribbonfish in homemade sauce, Pork ribs in my memory, Pan fried pork dumplings and Beef in the clay pot. Everything tasted very average and I honestly think that there are better chinese cuisines out there. As it is newly opened and there were a lot of people waiting for it, the whole situation got a bit out of hand.

The food is really yummy. Tried the spring onion pancakes, the cold noodles with beef mince meat and shredded cucumbers, XO soy sauce noodles with vegetables, fried dumplings, pig buns and fried buns. The staff are friendly. However the waiting line is so long and the space is not so big at this restaurant.

For me personally, I feel like things in clay pots are a little different and tastier than just a normal plate, but to be honest, I think that might be placebo. I've been to this place several times now, and their food has been consistently good for me.

Their portion sizes may look small but the food is surprisingly filling. Tonight when I went, I just wanted a light dinner so I could have room for more food later on. I ordered a beer braised duck, and pork ribs with pineapple sauce, along with some white rice to eat it all with.

The duck was a little too salty for my taste, and I found I had to eat it with large mouthfuls of rice to help counteract that saltiness. But the meat was cooked beautifully, very tender, and full of flavour without loosing any of that gamey taste that duck meat has. I think it's cooked in a bit of herbs too maybe, as it had a very faint herbal undertone, a bit like herbal duck soups. I didn't like the skin though, I don't like skin to begin with unless it's been fried, and this one is stewed, so it's got that rubbery slimey texture I hate.

The pork ribs were delicious, they were just perfect, and fall-of-the-bone tender. You could just break of pieces of the meat with no effort. There are rather large chunks of fat though, but that can't be helped I think, although it was very easy to pick the meat off the fat. But if you don't mind fat, and you think it makes the meat taste better, I think you'd love this, as the fat is cooked very thoroughly and looks like it'll just melt in your mouth.

Service here is very efficient and quite friendly, although the place does fill up very quickly so either come early or be prepared to wait. My bill for two, including drinks, usually comes to about $40-$50, so it's pretty average on prices.

TIP: you can also get take away here, so if you live close by, it might be better to get take away than to wait for a table, as the wait can be quite long.
Lily The Frugal Foodie
Went in a group of 4 and ordered 4 dishes. We liked the squid ink rice with prawn and the seafood mushroom tofu dish. The vegetable dish and the calamari with salted egg yolk dishes were average. There will probably always be a queue so go early to minimise wait time.

At a subsequent visit on a weekend night, arriving at 6:30, the wait was about an hour. We ordered 5 dishes between 4 this time and had leftovers to take home. In particular, the Singapore style barramundi which was delicious and is highly recommended.

Considering there was always a massive line there, I was expecting something much more. It wasn't bad but it was definitely not '1hr-wait' great.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Okay, I get the queues now. I'd been wanting to try Mr Stonebowl for some time but the queues had admittedly been a deterrent. I figured they would eventually die down, but they haven't thus far. So when one of my foodie mates suggested dinner there, it was now or never.

Our party of four dined mid week. The place was packed as usual, but then, it's not a particularly large restaurant. And as usual, there was a queue to get in. But they know how to turn a table; not even ten minutes after being seated, food was being served to the table. It's a pretty efficient system; while you're waiting outside for your table, peruse the menu and check the items you want which you hand over to the hostess before being taken to your table.

My favourite dishes of the evening were the garlic prawns with squid ink rice and deep fried eggplant in bread crumbs and garlic sauce. Both were unlike anything I'd ever tasted before and were uniquely presented dishes. There was also Singapore style barramundi, Peking style shredded pork with pancakes, cucumber and shallots, pan fried pork buns, and piggy sweet dessert buns.

Service was attentive throughout the evening, with water glasses topped up without asking, and empty plates cleared.
