Review Kansai Japanese Restaurant - Sydney

白夜クリス
The rice they used for their sushi fell apart pretty much upon contact and tasted like it was definitely left in the fridge overnight (it was hard and dry). Not to mention the fried soft shell crab they served in their salad also didn’t seem to be cooked properly as it was wet on the inside at some parts. Furthermore, there was a waitress in a grey shirt that didn’t have the best attitude as she pushed me aside when I was trying to get some soy sauce from the counter in the middle of the restaurant and told me to sit down.

Should be 0 star if I can. Been a customer for over 10 years abd dine in here everyfew months ever since. Been back last year still good. back last night, changed completely. Shashimi is not fresh, some slices got harden for leaving too long in fridge I guess. Food portions got cut down a lot eventhough we had all you can eat for a tiff price compared to before 55 pp abd cash only ( what are you trying to do). Sauce for salad used to be big hit now it is just a pathetic dressing on top of few leaves. Shashimi boat used to be nicely decorated with vegetables and decent amount of fresh Shashimi for 2, Now it's an empty boat with a few slice of NOT fresh Shashimi, hardly a portion for 1. Used to be served kindly and friendly, Now we are thrown with a booklet of paper to order for ourselves. Feel like I was in a Chinese take away shop, NOT a Japanese restaurant 😕 A Seafood Steamboat or hotpot is actually Salmon fishhead soup. 😵‍💫

Food is always great and fresh sashimi. The reason why I'm giving lower rating is because the person recently at the counter is quite unwelcoming. She charged me $60 for the buffet when in the menu it's only 55. She also lied to me that it's been like that since the pandemic started because I have had been there and only paid 45 per person just few months ago. I paid the full amount as I didn't wanna argue. Pricing can be transparent!

Not all you can eat. This used to be the best place for all you can eat sushi. New owners. Quality is lower. Twice I’ve been in and told the all “you can eat is finished” but I can have “a La crate” which is the same food but 4x more expensive. They also close ages before the published finish time. Used to be a hidden gem. Now a rock. Check out all the recent 1* reviews. Avoid.

Partner and I had this booked for over a few weeks on our trip to Sydney over Easter holidays. Upon looking at the website we assumed it would have been a great venu. Upon arriving we were surprised that it was a normal eatery shop, or better yet, a side ally shop. We both ordered the all you can eat sushi menu and it wasn’t translated too well on what we could order or not. We ended up ticking a piece of paper of what we wanted and got given different food then what was on the menu. The food was also not fresh and most of the sauces were from a store such as BBQ and Tomato sauce on top of meals. Upon paying, they wanted us to pay via cash while everyone else was paying by card. $117 cash from the ATM for food that would taste better from an actual eatery. If I could rate a 0 I would, but 1 is the lowest that we can go.

Amazing Japanese food. Great location, just three minutes walk to Wynyard Station. Went there 4 years ago with friends. The restaurant provided fresh ingredients and friendly customer service. We ordered 2 plates of Sushi combination. That was very impressing.

I celebrated my birthday today with friends, So i paid $50 each for the all you can eat. when I place my order, the manager was so rude and even questioning why we ordered to much entree. We feel uncomfortable how she stared us. she even told us that we only have 1 hour left as we just sat down for 10mins and we did not get our order yet. The food came late as is their tactics to consume the time.Very poor service, rude and unfriendly manager. You guys should close down as you dont know how to deal with the customers.

Amazing Japanese food. Really yummy gyoza and udon. The customer service is super friendly and they were very hospitable. The food took a good amount if time to be ready and it was fresh and delicious. I love how it was open on a weekday when everything else was closed. Great location too coz it is close to wynard station. I highly recommend.

So good! $35 for all you can eat sushi it's actually insane, we ate so much. I loved the aburi and scallop nigiri. The waiter also recommended his favourite sushi and I cannot remember it's name unfortunately, but had chicken filling and two types of sauces on top - one being cheesy. Definitely get bang for your buck

Dont let the entrance fool you. This is good quality Japanese with proper sushi, excellent tempura and tasty Udon.

This is a delayed blog post. I have a confession to make, I am a regular at Kansai and have been going here for over 10 years. I now work nearby and often frequent Kansai for a quick lunch or dinner. Kansai is a casual Japanese Eatery, located downstairs in the Hunter arcade. I have ordered the Green Tea Noodles with Salmon so many times, it's hard to count. It's absolutely my favourite dish but I opt for something else today. I recommend but I will be reviewing other dishes in this instance.

We came here for the $45 all you can eat deal, and it was very much worth it for your money. The sushi were tasty and the sashimi boats were huge! My favourite was definitely the gyoza, they were large and fried just right. Overall a very good price for a heap of food, and I’ll definitely be back in the future!

Been meaning to come to Kansai for a long time and finally had the chance to. Food quality was okay, was expecting better. Wouldn’t pay for the $45 all you can eat buffet again tho. Sukiyaki was pretty bland, sashimi boat looked pretty but sashimi quality was okay.

Hidden away in the Hunter Collection lies this Japanese joint. I ordered the take away sushi and sashimi platter which comes with a miso soup. It was a decent sized dish, and the fish tasted relatively fresh. They also do an all-you-can-eat which I may need to check out another time.

This restaurant offers a lot of lunch options from hotpot, sashimi, sushi, donburi, noodles and bento boxes. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bento box and was pleasantly surprised. Overall great place for a quick lunch in the city.

Food is good but over priced, went here with my friend sat down and started to order while my friend and I waited for one other friend.
service is quick however we were not told that if our friend didn’t order he couldn’t be sitting at the table and had to leave the restaurant which was really rude as we had all planned to go together for dinner and our friend got kicked out because he didn’t want to order any food if we had known before we started to order we wouldn’t of dined here

$45 for an all you can eat buffet?? DEAL! Sashimi boat was to die for. Service was nice and quick, surprisingly on a Friday night. Food also came out very quickly.

Great place for lunch in the CBD, located underneath the hunter connection. We had the vegetable udon and the prawn tempura udon and the serving size was reasonable. The service was fast and friendly staff.
The udon was very tasty, with large fresh battered prawns on the side.

Quantity over quality. $45 all you can eat with only gelato & tuna/kingfish sashimi excluded is certainly really great value. But quality is not exactly top notched. The actual pieces of fish on the sushi were sliced the thinnest possible & stretched wrapped on lots of rice. The seafood hot pot has lots of udon. Another thing to watch out is that they charge a penalty if you don't finish all the food ordered, but as the plate of sushi they turned up was a lot bigger then the picture on the menu, we just couldn't finish it. They didn't charged us the penalty but we did get a warning. Overall good if you're in a group & really hungry for a feed.

Ordered a bowl of ramen noodles for $11.90 and the first thing they say to you is that "you cant stay here for more than one hour" During the eating session, they literally stand next to you and watch you eat..Sort of trying to shoo you away. It took me 20mins to eat the whole thing.... I understand it's busy and everything... But it's rather sad with the service...

Found the appealing ad on Facebook about the Japanese all-you-can-eat, and I decided to give it a go. Since we're not head over heels with sashimi, we got the $32 package which includes basically everything, except for hotpot, gelato, and sashimi (duh). For starter, I ordered the gyoza or Japanese deep-fried dumplings. Though they had crunchy coatings, the vegetable fillings were unsavory and mushy. The chicken karaage came with tinier pieces than what we saw on the menu (never trust the pictures, folks!), they were a bit dry and greasy.

We also got the platter with raw tuna, salmon, prawn, squid, and scallop nigiri. This was my least favorite part because there were way too much-vinegared rice and the thinly slice seafood was not fresh. I could taste the fishiness in the back of my throat, and I knew straight away that this was not a good sign. Raw fish that used for sushi, despite not being cooked, should not have any other stronger smell than 'seawater'. Were the produces tainted? I didn't even want to think about it. Looking around the restaurants, diners who paid for more expensive package were making the most out of their money by getting at one gigantic boat of sashimi. A chill went down to my spine, I wouldn't do that, considering the quality of the seafood.

The prawn tempura was delicious, but there was no grated radish served with the tentsuyu (tempura sauce). We could not get the staff's attention for a second order because the place was just so overcrowded. I don't blame them. The crab salad was a rescuer after that fishy nigiri platter.

Overall it was a so-so Japanese experience, somewhat disappointing, considering the meticulous and delicacy elements in Japanese food preparation.
Karen Ty
The fish on top of the sushi is super thin.... and the scallops are not fresh at all. the unagi don only has one piece of unagi with lots of rice.... such a joke for sushi buffet. I would highly recommend avoiding this place. super disappointed
Lily
Had the popular sushi buffet but due to being Valentine's Day, sushi nigiri was set as a mixed plate as we were not allowed to choose how much of what we wanted. Hand rolls and tempura were good.

Rainbow roll and Kansai roll sushi quality of fish and presentation was a miss and didn't look like the photos or compare to the rest of the menu items.

Kansai is very busy and getting staff attention is challenging to order your worth of buffet.
Shame about this place. The food is good most of the time, but the staff are arrogant and rude. They don't seem particularly keen for business.

Took my wife, my mum and mother in law last night for the you can eat sashimi. After 20 mins they only had salmon left and ran out of everything else. Abit slack if you ask me. Was waiting ages for my foods and for some reason they chef kept looking at our table and giving us dirty looks.

In my opinion, I shouldnt be paying for all you can eat sashimi for 4 people if I only got all you can eat sashimi for 30 mins.

Plus they give you 1 and a half hours to eat which is fine but I was waiting 30 mins for my dishes to come out. Also on top of that 30 mins before the time ran out, the lady asked us for our last orders.

Food was okay. Sushi had too much rice but the sashimi was good while it lasted. Worth the money if I was able to eat enough sashimi but I wont be back anytime soon.

Could be alot better if things were done differently.
Selena
The service at Kansai was appalling, given that within a 5 minute timespan we had been asked 5 times if we were ready to order - even though tables were still available. The food was average, ordered the assorted sashimi platter and it tasted old and the soy sauce tasted diluted. Overall the ambience was poor due to the rushed service.

The $32 all-you-can-eat buffet deal is fantastic and well worth it. The customer service was very attentive and the sushi, tempura and other dishes were all fantastic.

Will definitely be coming again with bigger groups!

Had the $42 all you can eat menu.
Not great.
Service was rude, sashimi was mixed in freshness (tuna was off but kingfish was good).
Sushi rolls had too much sauce and tempura was way too oily.

Came here with 5 people at about 7pm
1. Restaurant seemed full, but they insisted they had space, so ended up being seated outside of the restaurant, in the common area of the walkway. They agreed to move us in once they have space, but proceeded to seat new guests.
2. 2/5 plates provided had food residue on them and were oily, and one chopstick had mold on them.
3. One of the servers was very negligent of us.
4. Food came, for one, it does have a fairly good value for it being an all-you-can eat.
5. Had a group sushi platter, rice was 75% of the sushi, chewy and didnt taste like actual sushi rice. The salmon gave me an allergic attack -i am not allergic to salmon, nor any other seafood.
6. We decided to just order cooked food, had katsu, takoyaki and such. Meat itself tasted ok - ignoring the fact that theres actually barely any meat and more salad in all the dishes. Then you taste the sauce, and you know they obviously used masterfood’s bbq sauce or the like, instead of teriyaki.

Overall, one of the worst restaurant experiences out there for all 5 of us, but I have heard good reviews from others i know, so try it at your own risk.

Went with the Bento B box - beef option.
As far as late night Japanese goes, this place is pretty good. The miso is tasty, although a tad on the cold side, but I didn't mind.
The beef is tender and flavoursome.
Service is very quick and efficient.
Went for $32 all you can eat. Very limited choice but hey, who cares, since I like yakitori, ebi tempura, egadashi tofu, chicken karage, right?

Ordered those. They were probably one of the most non-authentic Japanese I have tasted in a while. Extremely mediocre dishes. Being a Japanese restaurant, I have certain expectation (and worst expectation). This certainly exceeded my worst expectation.

Other than the food, the male attendant was quite crude but the female one is courteous.

But hey, don't just believe me, if you haven't been here, you must come at least once to prove me wrong.
Max Milosevic
Excellent value! You obviously aren't going to pay $42 and get premium quality all you can eat sashimi, but overall the food was fresh, tasty Japanese. Very attentive service too and didn't make you feel bad for ordering a lot. Recommended!

Service was ok but food was nothing nice. Don't like how the udon had so many other things in it.

Settled on this place for quick lunch cos of time constraint... won't be going again

I went there with my family for the "All you can eat" $42 dinner buffet. The only thing I could say is, what you get is nothing like what you see in the photos. Most of the staff were rude and cunning (except for the girl), the bowls/plates were dirty, the food quality was terrible.

Firstly, when we walked in, the girl was going to sit us in one of the tables, but the manager-looking man spoke to her in Korean and told us that the tables were all booked out and we had to sit outside in the food court stools area. So we decided to leave but as we were walking up the stairs, the man told us that there were seats available. Throughout the dinner, we didn't see any bookings that came in, except for a few walk-ins. There was less than 15 minutes that the restaurant was actually full.

Secondly, we ordered the Sashimi Boat and the Beef Hot Pot to start. The Sashimi Boat has 70% salmon, 15% tuna and 15% king fish. It says "daily selection" in the menu so you couldn't really say anything. We watched a few other tables, buffet or not, this is what you get for a $68 Sashimi Boat if you order it on its own (not with the buffet). We saw one table who get oysters in their Sashimi Boat and we asked the waiter, who told us that it costs $4 to put 1 oyster into the boat (not covered by the buffet price but was nowhere to be found on the menu).

With the Beef Hot Pot (I forgot what it is called but there is only one hot pot with beef in the menu), everything apart from the mushrooms was already overcooked when it was served on the table. The beef was so overcooked that I could barely bite it.

We then decided to order some hot food instead. My brother ordered a Una Don (Eel on rice), it came in a tiny bowl with a slice of eel that was smaller than the size of your Opal card.

We thought we would give the sushi a go because there are more varieties of "fish" on the sushi menu. We ordered the scallops and scampi nigiri (a slice of "fish" on the sushi rice). The sushi was poorly made (not the right type of rice and not the right ingredients added) - the rice fell apart and was still hot (warm towards hot) when we ate it. The chef must have very good knife skills as both the scallops and scampi was half the size of what it normally is on a nigiri. For the scallops, they just barely covered the sushi rice, and the thickness was about 3-4mm max. For the scampi, it was half a scampi, and the funny thing was, it only covers 1/3 of the sushi rice.

We have ordered a few other things that I didn't eat so I am not able to comment on them.

Last but not least, we asked for hot water for the table, but they only gave us a cup. I guess it's because of their poor English. So we asked for just normal water again later on, in which one of the glasses had a random piece of material floating on top. (Not to mention how we found everyone trying to swap the bowls/plates from the empty tables so we gave up swapping).

We would never go there again and we would urge people not to go. We had never felt so dissatisfied with a buffet that we had to go for dessert afterwards - we went to a chocolate cafe and I could still finish a fondue for two with a drink.

Came here to try the all you can eat deal ! Honestly, the food was pretty bad. The nigiri and sushi rolls had way too much rice. The sushi was also poorly made, breaking a part quite easily. You'd think that you can't go too wrong with jap, but the flavours in the rolls were just lacking. The sashimi boat looked great, however, the tuna texture was odd - not the freshest of fish it seems. Other sides like the karaage chicken also missed the spot. On a side note, the dressing for their salads was nice, and service was quite efficient. The space was also quite confined, lacking ventilation. Overall, definitely not a satisfying meal, would not return.

I go here when I have an udon craving. For $11.90 you get a large bowl filled with veggies and a generous serving of delicious teriyaki chicken. Whilst I haven't tried anything else, my friend has been here for the all you can eat dinner and thought it was decent. It's not refined Japanese dining but it offers a good meal.
Hannah
Came here for the $42 pp dinner buffet and wasn't too pleased with the quality of the food. However the most decent thing to eat was the sashimi boat. Apart from that everything else was quite bland with tiny portions and just overall bad quality. Not worth a second visit. Would recommend others to go elsewhere for a better buffet experience.

Great "all you can eat" place where you order whatever you want and how much you want from their a la carte menu. Particularly enjoyed the sushi and the seaweed salad.

This Japanese restaurant is located below ground in Hunter Connection close to Wynyard station. This is the best place to stuff yourself with all you can eat Japanese food. Service can be a bit slow at times but if you don't want to be filled up quickly with all the rice, order more sashimi!
The RnB Diary
One of the better Japanese options available in the Hunter Connection precinct. I had the mixed box ($8.50) with salmon and prawn sashimi and California rolls was well presented with chunky cuts of fish. The wasabi was fresh and there were a generous four soy sauce containers in the container. A good place to grab a fresh sushi lunch at reasonable price

Absolutely love this place. I have worked in the city for 10 years and have been and continue to eat here all the time. Kansai B with chicken for lunch and chicken katsu and udon for dinner
Mini PfiOou
Went for dinner and the sushi were pretty average, the salmon sushis were tasteless and the warm sushi rice was ruining the fresh taste of the sushi itself.
Only tempura or gyoza were pretty good.

Overall the all you can eat deal is pretty good value for 30 bucks. Good bargain for the money especially if you are hungry but wouldn't go back for the food itself !
Andre Chu
I recently called up to make a booking . Charging a 1 year old for the near full price of a buffet is quite unfair. $10 discount hardly makes up for it.
2hungryysisters
Hearing about their all you can eat offer we came here starving and left very full and satisfied. Kansai's all you can eat offer is by far the most generous and best money for value that i know of to date. Pretty much, you can order anything and everything on their menu as much as you want as many times as you want (providing you can eat it all as management reserves the right to charge extra on excessive food wastage) except their set menu options. The $42pp option is the way to go in my opinion as it includes the hotpot and sushi boat.
We skipped out on the hotpot this time around and went for the sushi boat, various servings of sashimi, nigiri and assorted sushi as well as soba and vegetable udon soup. We also ordered gyoza, yakitori and grilled eel and salmon nigiri. The sashimi was amazing. Both the tuna and salmon were so fresh. The assorted sushi were also really fresh and tasty (everything was made as you order) but the real winner was the sashimi. We ordered so much we were about to pop from all the sashimi and sushi. It was a shame you could only order one sushi boat per table, if able to we would have no doubt ordered much more. The grilled salmon and eel nigiri were also another winner for those who don't like their seafood raw. Gyoza and yakitori were good, vegetable udon and cold soba however were average but given this is an all you can eat sushi buffet, we werent bothered considering how fresh and delicious the sushi and sashimi were. Service is also good. Like i said before everything is made once you order and they bring it to the table for you to enjoy relatively fast. I would say the sushi here is almost as good as that in Japan.
In terms of value for money, Kansai ticks the box. Highly recommended for all those lovers of sushi who just can't get enough.
Johnny Pan
Very good value for money. There was a very nice selection for the buffet menu. Service wasn't so great though most likely due to being an extremely busy night so they seemed short staffed with the sushi taking an age to arrive and it was really hard to call a waiter/waitress to order
Oriana Garcia
We were in the area looking for a place to eat and having seen the reviews for Kansai we decided to check it out. Ordered the assorted sashimi which was ok, but the volcano and crunch sushi rolls were terrible! They were clunky with too much rice and hard... Portions are generous but not worth it.

On a Friday night this place was packed and considering it's located in a food court, I guess people like it. I definitely didn't!
RowdyRobbieEater
Awful service.

They usually forget what you've ordered and are rather rude, especially the men.

Sushi is rather good, but a bit expensive.
Pacc
Pros- sashimi boats (expect this for the price your paying)
Cons- other options including sushi, fried things and salads were disappointing. The sushi rolls and nigiris had had far too much rice.

Service was attentive although the lack in substance in their food overrides my palate. Wouldn't come here again.

Nothing but love for this place, service is always warm and friendly, combined with well priced good quality food makes for a winner, enough said peeps

Into every life a little rain must come... in the Hunter Connection and feeling hungry I spotted Kansai, which was absolutely swarming with people. Surely a good sign I thought - well actually not really, not for me :o I ordered the Kansai B lunch set and then I waited ... and waited ... and waited. While good things may sometimes come to those who wait, that was not the case with this meal. When it eventually appeared, the limp and soggy gyoza and tempura prawn were fitting accompaniments to the teriyaki chicken, which was covered in a cloyingly sweet sauce. Avoid.

Cheap & cheerful Japanese in the CBD!
I love this place... It's hidden downstairs on Hunter St - right at the entrance to Hunter Connection.
It's always very busy so it's a good idea to either book a table or get there early.
The sashimi is always incredibly fresh and tasty. The salads are massive! Best values for money.
I love the seaweed salad..
The only thing I can fault is that the service can be a little slow and sloppy during peak timeS. Understandable, although can be frustrating. I now get there early to beat the rush 🏃🏽👍
Def hit up this place if you're after a quick and tasty Japanese feast!!
Living in the CBD, Japanese food is absolutely everywhere. However, Kansai has always been the favourite - delivering fresh and tasty Japanese food within a fun, bustling little restaurant in the Hunter Connection. The owner is always so lovely - always going out of his way to fit us in when the restaurant is booked out. One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Sydney!
Olivia
terrible food! extremely terrible service!! totally waste of money!!! We had all-you-can-eat buffet, they simply left you there waiting for a long long time but ended up with nothing, after serving only a few of our orders. Can you imagine that you were still hungry after having a buffet?
Here Comes The Food
Upon entering the place I was receiving a mixed vibe that this place may be run by Koreans but I shrugged the thought and decided to let the food do the talking.

Mobile Review. So love it!! sushi here is heaveeeeen!
Wilson_j_1
Waited 90 mins before we could order our second round of dishes.. Not very happy with their customer service. It wasn't until my Korean friend spoke to the waiters about our lengthy wait that they started to pay attention to us. But it didn't make our experience any better. We couldn't get a waiter for our third round of orders for another hour! It seemed like they prioritised the louder, alcohol paying groups over the smaller groups/couples. Definitely not going back.

All-you-can-eats are always beautiful. This japanese restuarant offers two different options: $29.50 for the entire menu, excluding sashimi and hot pot. OR $39.50 including everything. After some debate, we went for the first option, and oh-boy, did it fill us up! The menu is quite extensive, and there're about 3 pages consisting of sushi rolls and hand rolls and what not, we're spoilt for choice! Sashimi salad. Fried chicken. Sweet chili sauce squid. Gyoza - BEST!!! Sushi platter - tuna, prawn, salmon, cuttlefish Green tea soba noodles! Agedashi tofu. Chicken yakitori Grilled-salmon sushi. Salmon avocado rolls Tempura fried sushi. The food is goooood! All the seafood seemed fresh, and staff were friendly in general! It's carbs-heaven! The rice gets you all bloated afterwards, but it's so worth it, them sushi! Great place for Japanese food in general, although definitely more worth it to eat the all-you-can-eat than to order separately. My stomach will
I'm Still Hungry
I would not recommend arriving during peak lunch hours, as it gets epically crowded – try and arrive after 2pm if you can. Arriving before 12:30pm is also suitable, but don’t arrive too early – the restaurant doesn’t actually begin serving until 12pm. I’ve had most of the things at Kansai already – I’ve yet to try the BBQ, but I can get those cravings satisfied elsewhere. Below are a…selection of

We ordered plenty that evening, after reading a few reviews online I knew what I wanted. I was definitely going to order those sushi rolls, yakitori, and grill salmon nigiri.

Since at Kansai you have to order your food, and we were a group of 5 so they asked for lots of 5 for everything that we did order! Salmon aburi was ordered in massive bouts, as well as the soft-shelled crab hand rolls which were absolutely delicious. I loved the specialty rolls as well! The dragon rolls were definitely a hit, along with the deep fried sushi called "Crunch" which had an absolutely delicious crisp outer batter and we also managed to try the Volcano rolls which were also pretty good. Of course, you can't go to an all you can eat without ordering sashimi nigiri! And some sashimi salad for your daily dose of greens. We ended with some prawn tempura which were pretty nice with the dipping sauce.

Kansai is not immediately obvious to passers-by. However, head down the stairs and you’ll soon realise that a lot of people have caught on to this little gem! The place is heaving and for some reason I’m reminded of being back in Tokyo. The food is good – I wouldn’t say it’s the best Japanese I’ve had but you can’t really complain with the great value.

Four words that will make anyone smile: All. You. Can. Eat. Every year I say that I have outgrown the ignominious lust for outright gluttony. And yet still, there's a delicious little thrill at the prospect of a limitless buffet, as though a personal best

If you've ever read the 50 or so reviews of Kansai on eatability, you'll notice that they're very varied. Many have said that they've had good experiences, many say they've had terrible. Lucky for me, every time we've been here, it's been brilliant even t

For a couple of years now I've been hankering to get down to Kansai and eat myself silly for $28, especially when lately I've been taking lunch upstairs in the Hunter Connection Food Plaza and always walk past the Japanese man statue beckoning me to come

Despite they have a signboard prominently displayed on Hunter Street and also an escalator that leads straight to the restaurant hidden on the lower ground in Hunter Connection, Kansai is one of those places that you probably would have walked past a thou

I have been to this restaurant several times and sometimes it's really good and sometimes not so good. The freshness of the sashimi is a bit volatile. Certain sushi dishes a very good like eel ones or the rainbow one. The green tea noodle is so bland and boring. The portions used to be very big now is just a little bit bigger than average. The boss is really nice and very sociable. The ambience is a bit dated and the air conditioning is very very cold. But all in all a good place to go have lunch maybe not so much for dinner.

I had a very bad experience with this restaurant last year in July 2013 that I can still remember up til now. My friends and I made a booking for 6 as we were excited to try the 'all you can eat menu for $30'. It was a Saturday and upon arrival we stated to the waitress that we had a reservation and was seated soon after. It was very busy so there were customers who had not made a booking waiting outside. Once we sat down we started to look at the menu, suddenly a man, presumably the head chef or manager approached us and started telling us off that we are not allowed to eat at this hour unless we have made a booking as there are lots of people waiting. We then stated to him that we actually did made a booking on the phone earlier today. He then went to check a book and then walked away without apologising and continued going behind the counter cooking. I was very upset how rude he was to us as customers eating and paying at this restaurant. The food ended up being very tasteless as I had lost my appetite. I highly recommend not going to this restaurant.

Worst japanese I have ever eaten. Dined at Kansai on Friday 3/1/2014. Bad start to the night. Sat next to the drinks fridge with very little room and the speaker for the music(very loud) directly above. Waited 15 mins for anyone to come and talk to us and asked if we were able to move as the music was so loud we were unable to talk to each other and were getting a headache. Music was turned down but was then turned back up after 10 mins. Originally we were going to go for the all you can eat but as we were not that hungry decided on the set menu box. Big mistake. I had the beef which was tasteless and cold, My husband had the chicken which was slightly better. We have eaten in Japanese restaurants all over the world and this was the worst we had ever tasted. Decided to leave the majority of the food on the table and just pay the bill as we thought if we complained we would be abused. When paying I stated that I was disappointed with the meal and it had not been very nice. The counter staff person then pretended he did not understand English. Left feeling very disappointed as I had been looking forward to the meal.

Birthday dinner. Went here for my birthday dinner, got the $29.95 all you can eat deal.

PRO: fantastic food, everything was yummy, great variety available even without the sashimi. Staff was attentive and nice, food presentation was good, cutlerys and plates were clean. And price is reasonable for an all you can eat.

CON: Staff barely speaks any english and sometimes this became hard to communicate asking for cutlerys and portion sizes. Seating inside is very cramped and stuffy, tables and environment actually feels pretty dirty. The deal without sashimi and hotpot included a big variety BUT they ALL came with a large amount of rice! You couldnt order a plate of meat without a side of rice which was silly because rice fills everyone up very quickly nor could u leave it because they will charge you extra for leftovers.

Overall was a pleasant experience, but not likely to return soon.

Hand rolls were sensational! Agedashi Tofu was to die for. Even the green tea was divine. Our favourite place by far

Tastiest sushi rolls in the business end of town. Rice paper rolls are huge and delicious packed full with meat, chicken or tuna, and cheap as well! They also have cheap large containers of rice with random dishes such as teryaki chicken or salmon for very cheap. I go here a lot!

All you can eat sushi!. Came here with my boyfriend for the dinnertime 29.50 all you can eat sushi. we loved it! extremely good value and we literally ate as much as we could. the quality of the sushi is pretty average, but it's all you can eat so that makes up for it. consistency and service is a little dodgy too - they forgot our order twice and sometimes what you get is a little different to the menu.

overall, definitely recommended if you just want a fun night and to eat lots of sushi!

Me and my gf was looking for a sushi rest and came across kansai online. We were hoping for an authentic japanese restaurant but apparently Kansai isnt run by japanese and its more like a spacious counter in a foodcourt inside an office building. We were sitted at the bar which could be nice but since we were at the very end of the bar all the waiters pass their orders from our side.

You can see from the fish chiller that they dont really care about how they stacked the fish and it looks more like a fast food sushi join. But i must admit that the all you can eat thing is such a deal and i guess that what makes this place packed. But if you're looking for an authentic japanese rest, i dont recommend it.

Highly recommended for all-you-can-eat. At $28 for the all-you-can-eat menu, this is the place to go for sushi and other Japanese food binging. There is quite a large variety of food on the menu and most of the options we had were very tasty. An excellent place to go to when having cravings for Japanese.

Locate food court, small noisy place. sushi rice taste very cold, just like take out from the fridge. Sashimi plate only has salmon and tuna, price alb high for this kind quantity.

I go for the sashimi. Every time I've been here, it's been pleasant even though the food is often inconsistent - in what you actually get, not so much as the quality.
I tend towards the Sashimi Salad- it's one of my favourties which I order everytime. There is a generous amount of salmon, tuna and kingfish . But what makes this stand out is the dressing- it's a special japanese salad dressing which tastes slightly like soy sauce, only much better!
Would I return? Hai

Kansai - Seafood was not fresh. I went to Kansai, somewhat dubious about the quailty of food and my fears were proven true. My companion and I opted for the buffet and were terribly disappointed with the quality of the food. The seafood wasn't fresh and appetising. The sahimi salad contained what appeared to be "trimmings" and was not very palatable. A truly bad experience.

Just had another extraordinary meal here and this time I brought 7 friends! Definitely one of Sydneys hidden Japanese treasures. You MUST go for dinner and with an empty stomach to enjoy the "all you can eat" menu. Beware though this is NOT a buffet! For $28 you get unlimited, freshly made sushi, sashimi, appetizers and anything else you may like from their menu. The food is superbly presented and tasty! Unbelievable quality for the price. Atmosphere is nothing to speak of but at this price who cares? Be sure to make reservations for weeknights, Saturday nights are usually quieter.
