Review Belly Bao - Sydney

Annie Lin
Cute little restaurant in Newtown serving bao styled dishes. Very delicious, although the tofu was a bit bland. We got two burgers and a bao with two drinks, and it was definitely not filling enough. Expect to order lots here if you want to fill up.
Mia
The perfect mid week date night! Everything was super fresh and delicious, the soft shell crab and beef bao buns were a big hit. We also had the BBC baoger, fine spice mushrooms and fried wings which were delicious. The gaytime bao and blueberry spring rolls are a must try. 4 star rating because the fries we ordered were never brought out and the service was a little slow for a weeknight. Overall would defiantly go back again.

Loved the food, staff were very friendly and helpful. Portions ARE small but at the price set, i think it was very reasonable. I wish i lived close enough to order delivery!

Delicious food and a good vibe. Serving sizes are a bit small but the taste and quality makes up for it! The Beyond Baoger was juicy, would highly recommend.
Celeste Lindner
Absolutely delicious food here! There isn't anything I'd change about the food, it's also reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly. Will be coming back again!
Michelle Thomas
Friendly staff yummy baos! What more can you ask for! Fave is definitely the pork crackling bao along with the soft shell crab. We got the Chinese broccoli for some greens and it was in a nice oil soy sauce. Ordered the karaoke tea (lychee +mint+bourbon pitcher. Definitely a fresh drink for summer

Amazing restaurant, great portion sizes of delicious food. The staff were also super friendly and went above and beyond, would definelty go back

The bao were amazing - crispy tofu with fresh flavours, beef brisket so flavourful, pork belly rich enough that it should be one between two. And leaf tea! OMG, leaf tea!

Highly recommend! Atmosphere is warm and vibrant with the background tunes hitting every mood but still able to chitchat with friends. The food was absolutely delicious- cannot wait to try everything else on the menu. Book in or takeaway ASAP!

I haven’t been to belly bao since it moved to Newtown. The spicy bai noodles with the roast pork was 10/10! The noodles were like flat rice noodles but a bit chewier. The seasoning was perfect however the portion was small :(. Curry cheese fries were yummy too, you can’t go wrong with Japanese curry and some fresh fries. Now time for the baos. The panko crumbed chicken bao was what I expected. Pretty much chicken sandwich except on a bao instead of bread. Slow braised pork belly and beef short rib was exceptional though. Overall, wouldn’t dine here all the time as you would pay a heap to get full as besides the baos, the portion sizes are small haha.

Poor beef, poor value and they stiffed me on a wing. The baoger bun itself works great - tastes like bao but is firmer and holds the burger well. The beef seemed poor quality though and very chewy plus it ends up as a very small burger (almost slider-sized, or not much bigger than a normal bao) for a pretty high price. The fried wings were done well except for stringy chicken and no flavour in the batter, however the menu says two wings and they only gave me one. 2/5 for the food itself then deduct one for ripping me off.

Bao chicka wow wow!!!! Definitely eat the spicy noodles!!

Interesting fusion. Love the softshell crab bao, the texture was great with the crunchy fried softshell crab and fresh vegetables and the sauce balanced the flavours well. Baogers have an interesting texture (and funny names too), more fulfilling than expected. Ordered the magic mushroom bao (with chocolate filling) for dessert, the mushroom-shaped baos look absolutely adorable, not overly sweet too. Staff was attentive and friendly even during peak hours. If a booking is not made then you’d probably have to put your details down on the wait list and come back in 15-20mins. Drinks and cocktails sound delicious by their names and ingredients but were a bit overpriced imo. Can use forks & knives while chopsticks were also provided. Overall very cosy place with creative dishes for a casual night out:)

Absolutely incredible food. I cannot rave about this place enough. Amazing menu, great vegetarian options. Just absolutely yum yum yum and good service too
Nancy Zou
Small portions, delicious flavour. There was limited seating so we sat at the bar, which had very little table room. The noodles were hella spicy, the buns were soft and wonderful. Bit pricey but it's what you'd expect in Newtown.

Actually: 3.5

The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was reasonably priced and came out quite quickly. Belly Bao has a cute little bar and a unique menu. The portions were small, but delicious.
N
The Baoger is definitely one of a kind. All the right kinds of flavours a burger should have. The spicy noodles are amazing too. Top it off with the pandan balls which are just the right amount of sweetness without being too overwhelming.

Great atmosphere and the bao fillings were super tasty. The curry fries were a quirky combo, but somehow just worked. The highlight of the evening though, was definitely the Apple bao jug.
Monica Tsui
Very delicious bao! The buns are extremely soft and the filling is very tasty and satisfying. Chips are deliciously crispy and flavorful! The gin and black pepper cocktail is very refreshing as well. Not a super filling meal but very delicious. Would definitely come back!

Popular Asian fusion in Newtown, had an early evening visit, the place was really busy already, got the last two seats by the window, people came after us had to wait for a while to get the seats. Ordered the roast pork belly bao, beef short ribs bao and the onion bao noodle, as we had plans to go to another place for dessert, so didn’t try the dessert here. Both baos were good, with tasty fillings. The noodle was ok, taste a bit on the plain side for me, maybe I should have ordered the spicy noodle instead. Overall, it seems to be a good place to meet friends and have a quick bite.
Chewie
Oh my, this dessert was insane. Deep fried gay time with a crispy bao bun and drizzled with salty caramel sauce. It all worked so well. Could have gone for seconds !
Tiges
Belly Bao’s menu and concept is nothing new, but it’s a nice addition to the Newtown dining scene and a good casual option. The fried chicken and noodles are actually very good and I really like the tofu bao.
Service is super friendly and the hot waiter behind the bar makes for an even better dining experience.
Eunifoodie
While this place is known for their baos, the highlights for me were the sweet potato fries and fried chicken wings - so so very crispy. I recommend the pork cracklings bao. Don’t bother with the baoger - not that interesting
Freddie Diaz
Overall nice experience, bao filling u can tell is frozen over hit food, chips were good and great sauce. Others like the fried mushrooms is a bad salty flavourless experiment. Service is nice.like the Menu idea. Like make your own order. I like that, different
EL
One of my favourite places for a delicious and tasty meal that doesn't break the bank. The baos are so flavoursome and the noodles are so good! The noodles have a nice chewy texture that's ridiculously tasty and they have nailed the flavours. The Pandan balls for dessert is also a must!
Luxladyslife
Absolutely loved the vibe at belly bao but it was really hard to get a table as we went on Sat night. Totally loved their mocktail/cocktail, and the buns were so yummy that could make you lick all the remainder crumbs afterwards. Totally loved the pork buns, they literally melt in your mouth in 0.1 second XD

After hearing about how good Belly Bao is and seeing the rating on Zomato so high I decided to give it a go. But it looks like you shouldn't believe everything on the internet.

We got 2 Baos, both the noodles and a dessert.
The Bao bun was extremely soggy at the bottom and the distribution of the ingredients was very poor. There was a lot of meat but little of anything else. It looked like they got 1 kimchi and cut it up as there was barely anything there.
The noodles were fairly average and the noodle texture was the only redeeming feature.
Nothing negative to say about the Golden Gaytime Bao as it was literally just a golden gaytime inside a bao bun.

I normally have two categories when it comes to food. It's worth going back again or it's a try once to say you've had it before and move on. This was definitely a try once and move on experience.

Honestly one of our all time faves!

Every meal is served and presented well, smells amazing, some have crunch and others are creamy and most importantly, they taste great! They are unique in their ways and are always down to create new dishes and get creative with it.

Personal favourite was their chopped up beef patty BAOger. Chopped up cheese and Angus beef patty, onion, gherkin, ketchup & mustard! Add BACON + EGGPLANT, so good!

Their desserts are great too, so are their drinks. Check out the photos to have more of an idea.
Andy Quan
Wow. Currently a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Zomato. That’s ridiculously high. I was impressed but this tells me something about their broad appeal. I love Asian food, and I’m often intrigued by Asian fusion food, so to serve up unpretentious weird mixtures of fusion food, in a relaxed atmosphere, is pretty fun. The only nod to the Asian menu in the decor are somewhat tacky little lanterns tied on to the lamps, but otherwise, it looks like the place is unrenovated from whatever it was before.
Angela Cho
Food was okay but overall disappointing. Even though they were known for their bao buns, the actual bun broke at the fold when we were eating, which means it wasn't fresh.
Sharon Lam
#%@! I died. Soooo good!
I loved the young host, waitress and waiter, the sweetest customer service!
Ordered, all the baos, spicy noodle, wings and Bao burger! Loved all of them. That succulent soft pork belly!!!!!!! 🤤🤤🤤
Hungriestsam - Samantha
Unfortunately I wasn't very hungry when I went so I couldn't try as much as I wanted to. Overall the atmosphere and decor was very fun and the prices were reasonable. I would probably recommend booking if you are going with more than 2 people because the place is pretty small. I went in as a party of 2 at 6pm on a Friday without a booking and they sat us right away, but it did get busier later.

I got a lychee cocktail which was pretty tasty. The fries with Japanese curry and cheese was something interesting, we enjoyed it. The braised pork bao was decent but it didn't stand out to me. The pandan bao balls for dessert was a unique dish which was probably my favourite part of the meal, it was crispy and the pandan cream topped it off nicely :) I will definitely be back some time!

Gai Lang - spinach with oyster sauce
Pork belly Bao
Beef Bao
Spicy noodles
BBC fries chicken wings
Bao Gaytime dessert
BBC chicken Baoger

The interesting thing about this place is that the Bao’s are not the best thing here. They are actually quite plain. What did it for me was the fried chicken, spicy noodles, chicken baoger and man you have to order the Gaytime dessert, yum!
Jessica Bower
My partner and I went to Belly Bao with very high expectations.. unfortunately the food was not up to par. Our usual bao/fried chicken spot - Papa Do's in Cabramatta is far superior. Worth the trip west!

The onion bao noodles were the highlight of the meal but were very over priced for the portion size. The pork belly and beef bao were half the size of Papa Do's and lacked flavour. The fried chicken was also underwhelming and very oily. To finish the meal we had the gaytime bao. It was yummy but nothing to rave about honestly.

In the end we walked out still hungry after spending $50 compared to Papa Do's where we spend $30 and have leftovers. There really is not any competition.
Melbfoodiwishihad
The best fried chicken wings! Make sure to order extra spicy sauce on the wings and ask for extra truffle mayo with the fries - delicious! It’s now licensed and the cocktail jugs are great too!

Very happy experience to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday. The foods and drinks are awesome especially the dessert. We will come again LOL.

Beef Short Rib Bao : 😁 Great
Spicy Bao Noodles : 😍 Amazing

Small, cozy restaurant located on a busy street in Newtown, Belly Bao definitely takes the twist on traditional Asian food. They have various Bao stuffings and even Bao burgers (baogers). My beef Bao was delicious. The meat was perfectly cooked and the flavour combination worked. The Spicy Bao Noodles is something that I would go back for. I actually love chewy noodles, and this dish was literally all that. The spice level was good and the flavour was addicting. You’ll have to try it to know what I mean. The bar is extensive and they have so many unique cocktails and mocktails to choose from. Definitely worth a visit back.
Susan
3.5! Good service and nice food. Usually busy so bookings are recommended if you don’t want to get stuck at the bar. The beverage range huge. They also offer HIBIKI, which I recommend for those whisky lover. You will not regret it!
Overall the Beef Short Rib Bao was okay, nothing too spectacular or bursting with flavour. The spicy bao noodles were delicious and sure had a spice to it. The noodles were very oily, way more than necessary, but I guess that’s where the spice comes from.

Came across this place strolling in Newtown and decided to give it a try and ordered the tofu bao and one of the vegetarian noodles.

Baos were delicious, full of flavor, I guess $7 for two a few months back and the noodles were 12$.
Good enough for two people if you're not very hungry.
Sweet And Sour Fork
I had a great time at Belly Bao. Not only was all the food fun and tasty, it was accompanied by a lively atmosphere, and staff that were upbeat and helpful. Admittedly, the portion sizes recommended on the menu caught me a bit off guard; they suggested 2 bao, or a single serve of bao noodles as a main, when in reality I could finish off 2 bao and a serve of noodles by myself. But then again, I’m hardly a stranger to paying a bit too much for portions that are a bit too small at a place that’s a bit too cool, and given the quality of the food and the experience overall, I’d happily come back for another visit, even if it’s just for the bao noodles.
Tanya
Am I missing something? Not too sure why there’s such a big hype over these. The baos were quite mediocre and extremely small. None had a good punch of flavour and were quite unimaginative and plain. I was extremely hungry afterwards as well!

It seems like they’ve expanded their menu with heaps of other items so maybe I’ll give them a try again if I’m feeling brave.
Daniel Chelliah
The Baoger is amazing! It’s a beautiful fusion of Bao dough with a traditional burger. There’s nothing else like this in Sydney. For dessert get the Gaytime Bao.
Foodilicious Gal
This place is a must-visit for everyone! The food is mouth-watering. We ate the baos-little pillows from heaven (crab, pork and chicken), the spicy bao noodles, fried chicken and the curry cheese fries. Couldn't find a single fault with any of these food items. Also, the prices are extremely reasonable. Highly recommend this place! PS: they also have on table the huy fong sriracha hot chili sauce which is amazing!!!
Phfat
We ordered the pork belly and crackling bao, beef bao, and crab bao. My favourite was the pork crackling bao, so much flavour and loved the crunchy crackling for texture! The crab bao was yum and had some truffle in it, and the beef was nice but not as good as the others. We also ordered a very strange cocktail jug which had green ball things in it, probably best to stick to beer/wine!
Clyde Pereira
The overall dining experience was amazing. Food portions were generous and the taste was amazing. The Baos & half fried chicken are the highlight of the night. Service was good. Decor is really cool, warm and cozy atmosphere with groovy music. Totally recommend this place for a meal with friends
Anna
Such yummy food!! Tried the tofu bao, papaya salad, chili noodles, and eggplant baoger and everything was delicious! I actually preferred the eggplant but overall combo of the bao better so an eggplant bao would be fantastic. 😁 The only downside is it's a little pricey and all this sounded like a lot of food but we were still hungry at the end. 😣

If you haven't tried Belly Bao, now is the time! Located in the heart of Newtown, this quirky, tropical and laid-back restaurant serves up so many interesting and delicious dishes made out of bao dough. You can get regular baos, dessert baos, the baoger, bao noodles, etc. The bao noodles was really what blew me away! Thin flat noodles made out of bao dough tossed in an addictive spicy sauce - so yum! The fried chicken was also insanely good and very indulgent with the add-on of salted egg. The baoger was amaaazing, one of the best burgers I have ever had. The braised beef short rib bao that I ordered was a let-down but I think it's just that particular choice of filling because the other girls really enjoyed their roast pork belly and soft shell crab ones!
The Miniature Life
We came by to Belly Bao for a quick eat before heading home after a night out in Newtown. We ordered the vegan cheese toastie and eggplant baoger. The toastie for $8 was a little bit tiny, but my goodness was it absolutely delicious! There was garlic, a hint of chilli, and a whole lot of oozy vegan cheese. The baoger was such an interesting item on the menu. The burger was was made with the same material as bao is made. The buns were so so soft and delicious. The filling features crispy eggplant, and pickled cucumber with lettuce. This was so incredibly delicious, and made even better with a couple of drops of the sriracha.
I loved the ambiance on the inside - the restaurant is super intimate and warm, and I loved the wooden decor throughout. Service is really friendly and speed too. My only downside is the small serving portions.
Thepantstent
Finally got to try this popular place the other night.

My friend and I ordered two of their braised pork belly baos and two of the pork crackling baos. We also ordered the spicy bao noodles and four of their chicken wings. Overall everything was very flavorful and super tasty. The baos are real soft and the meat/fillings all compliment eachother very nicely. The only disappointment was that the 'pork crackling' looked to be packaged pork rinds. We were expecting fresh crackling.

The spicy bao noodles are delicious but they were much too spicy for my liking. The chicken wings are served fresh - they have a good crunch, not too greasy while still juicy and the seasoning used is really good; no need for any sauce!

The service we recieved was wonderful. The wait staff are extremely friendly and efficient. Despite how busy the place was, we recieved our food very quickly. I will definitely come back to try other stuff on their menu.

Emily
Highly recommend Belly Bao when you are craving and searching for something more quirky and flavourful. The customer service was extremely efficient and considerate in that the waitress wiped not only the tables but also cleaned the seats for us. Overall service was very attentive.

The food itself was very flavoursome tasting not only the crispiness of the chicken but also tender, blending well with the melted cheese. All baos were served at the right temperature which to further increased the enjoyment of the meal.

Most memorable was the gaytime dessert which was one of the most magnificent and joyful dessert. It completed the meal and made me felt fulfilled.
Will definitely be coming several more times !

Isabelldc
Must say the best asian food ever!
I’ve ordered the spicy noodles, two wings and slow cooked beef bao. They all flavorful , the bao has the soft bun and the beef was perfectly cooked. The noodles was not overcook and it was tasteful. The wings were crunchy and juicy.
It cost around 25 dollars for all food. Very affordable.

Enjoy!!
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
An innovative Asian cosy restaurant with variations of dishes using bao dough including regular baos, ‘baogers’, and ‘bao noodles’. It was an early lunch hour for us and it wasn’t too busy and plenty of room to park the friends’ pram. The service was warm and friendly. They were proactive with explaining the menu if it was your first time.

The menu is extensive for cocktails and mocktails. The Rose Lychee Tea and Yuzu Splash caught our eyes. Both were well presented. They were refreshing and full of flavour.

The baos we ordered were light and fluffy. The fillings were yummy and complemented the buns. The pork and beef ones were wonderful. The chicken is quite spicy so beware of that. Fries were nicely seasoned.

Onto the mains of Onion Bao Noodles, Chopped Cheese Baoger, and The Chicken Baoger. We thoroughly enjoyed the dishes ordered. Noodles were wonderfully springy and had a great bite. Loved the sauce that covered it and had added pork belly, mushrooms, and egg which made the meal more substantial. The baoger buns were white and light. The fillings were tasty.

Friends were very full at that stage but managed to finish with Pandan Bao Balls. Couple of fried bao balls filled with bright green pandan. Served with coconut, sugar syrup as well as pandan coconut whip, thoroughly enjoyed this and rounded off the meal really well.

I’d definitely come back here!

Besides the fact that I’m a huge Bao lover, this place serves up nothing but deliciousness! This was my second visit since it has opened as the original menu did not have the Baoger or the Bao noodles which was one of the main reasons I had returned. The Baoger did not disappoint and you know a burger (or any type of food for that matter) is amazing when you can’t even put it down for a rest. The noodles were also delicious, I’d recommend adding the pork belly and if you aren’t a fan of chilli I’d stick with the onion noodles cause the spicy noodles pack a massive punch. Bao’s I would recommend include the Roast pork and Soft Shell crab. Oh and the curry cheese fries are a must! Service is great and they are friendly and helpful. I’d recommend booking to not have to wait for a table.
Whitnieee
Its like the best “bao” shop in Sydney I’d say
Love the pork belly bao, its my favourite.
Sticky wings are pretty good, we love them
Loved everything we had, service is good and friendly
Theeconomicfoodie
My first ever Bao experience did not disappoint! I visited Belly Bao on a Friday evening with a friend. We were seated on arrival at the bar. Staff were friendly and attentive, provided us with menus straight away and offered to grab us drinks. For the main event I had the crackling roast pork ($7) and panko crumbed chicken ($7) baos. The crackling roast pork was juicy with perfect crackle served on top. The panko chicken which is marked as medium chilli on the menu, had a great hit of spice and the panko chicken was crunchy and flavoursome. We shared the sweet potato fries served with chilli aioli ($7) which were tasty and not oily. Overall, this was a great cheap and cheerful dinner and somewhere I'd return to try out the rest of their menu!

It usually takes about 2 seconds to make a good impression. We were a bit disappointed that we were not greeted upon arrival and had to ask if one of the tables we saw were unoccupied. However, the staff showed us their good customer service once we were at the table. We understand that they were discussing something among themselves & we’re not angry at all, but some people may take it to the heart so just keep that in mind :) now onto to the food. I ordered slow braised pork belly bao, chopped cheese baoger, belly bao fried chicken and sweet potato fries. My favourite would be the slow braised pork belly bao. First bite and I instantly knew that I would be coming back. The baoger was nice too, but I would choose the belly baos over the baoger any day. The next time I visit, I probably won’t order the baoger, chicken and fries, and just save my stomach for the belly baos 😋 Food came out quick and the environment was very nice and cozy. I can see myself being a regular here. Amazing food!
Foodie In Chief
Bao was soft and pork belly was tender and moist, cocktails were okay so next time I will probably go for a beer instead, dessert was pretty delicious, fried ice cream was warm on the outside and cold on the inside, will go back as we liked the vibe and want to try their fried chicken
HANGRYHUNGRY
Tried belly bao in the CBD a couple years back! Decided to hit up their newtown store for the savoury good stuff. The food was quite average. The curry cheese fries honestly tasted very odd. It had a really weird curry taste, it didn’t even taste like curry.. which was a bit disappointing. I think the cheese that was used did not work well with the curry sauce.

Everything else was quite good tho. The chicken baoger tasted like like a really refreshing chicken burger. The shredded cabbage made it taste lighter and not too heavy. They used sriracha for the spicy fried chicken - which worked well together. The roasted pork belly bao was my favourite! Almost a bite sized bao that had a little crackle. Overall it was an ok experience.
Joseph Tran
Hipster sort of place to chill and dine in. Ordered the Crackling Roast Pork Belly Bao, The Baoger and 4 BBC chicken wings. I suppose its a hit or miss, depending on whether you enjoy your pork and chicken. But i love my chicken and pork skins crispy and tender.
Kellie W
Belly Bao did not exceed my expectations but it was a wonderful experience to share with my friends. My friends and I ordered 4 belly baos, Japanese curry fries, five spice oyster mushrooms, BBC chicken (two ways) and spicy bao noodles.

The baos. The panko crumbed chicken bao was a huge disappointment as the chicken was overly dry and bland. There wasn’t enough sauce and lacked creativity. The soft shell crab was a hit as the batter was light, crispy and flavoursome. Whereas, the crackling pork belly bao was another disappointment as the crackling were sure amazing, but the pork belly itself were bland and dry.

Japanese curry fries. The fries were not cooked enough as they became soggy and unpleasant after a few minutes. The curry loaded on top was overly vicious/thick making the fries less enjoyable overtime.

The bao noodles were the star of the evening. They were cooked to perfection with a generous amount of sauce and love! It was just delicious! The five spice mushrooms were mediocre. As the flavour was a hit, but the batter was a miss as it was overly soggy and oily. If the batter was crispier, it would’ve been amazing!

The BBC chicken was another hit and miss. Even though the fried chicken was tender and juicy, the batter/coating fell off in large chunks and pieces making it a nightmare to eat.

But kudos to Belly Bao as their staff were super friendly and tentative.

These delicate and soft handmade baos are so divine! 😍😍😍
That 5 spiced mushroom 🍄 is a must try snack. It’s full of flavors and crispy. 👍🏻
OneHungryHuman
Finally got down here to try some amazing Bao. Great vibe and the staff are very upbeat.
Crispy wings full of flavour, and the Bao soft, fluffy like a pillow - just how it should be.
The curry cheese fries were different but soooo good!! Order up - you won’t be disappointed
Shubham Kedia
This place is a good 10 minute walk from Newtown station. For a vegan or a vegetarian they have only one tofu bao which was average. It’s like a snack as mentioned on the menu with a spicy end. For the main, we tried the Bao Noodles, the Spicy ones were too spicy for me while the Soy sauce based one was too sweet. There was no middle ground, even after the main we weren’t hungry enough so we ordered for the Mushroom and Truffle Aioli fries side, both of them were good. The best part has to be the dessert. It was confusing to choose between the two so we ordered for both. If you’re a fan of Coconut, instantly choose the dough balls. They’re amazing. The Gaytime Bao was my favourite, I could have eaten another one 🤔
Lien Nguyen
A big disappointment. I love belly bao, the past times I’ve been to the CBD location have left me feeling extremely satisfied. I thought it was the same for their Newtown location but it didn’t. I came here hungry and ordered the soft shell crab, panko crumbed chicken baos and fried chicken (4 piece wings). The fried chicken had so much batter that just fell off the wing in chunks. Not only that but the batter and wing was very bland! The panko crumbed chicken bao was decent, however the soft shell crap was a huge disappointment, was soggy and overly crab fishy. Took one bite out of it and that was enough for me. So yeah, it was a miss for me.

Bao’ are getting really famous now.
A lot of new places opening up.
This place is nice if you want a quick bite and drink a few beforehand.
The bad thing was that used to be closed during lunch time, not sure if this has changed.
Must have: chicken bao
Maria Ghali
I never leave reviews, but this is well deserved! Every dish we had was incredibly tasty! Highlights were the crackling pork belly bao, the chopped cheese baoger, the sticky wings and the curry fries. Good value for money. Will absolutely be back!
Mick
Awesome food, great value. Pleasantly surprised with the curry fries. Often busy - for good reason. Worth putting your name down and coming back when they call.

ONE OF THE BEST AND PROB UNDERRATE BURGERS IN SYD. The once only on thursday special - the Baoger, is now a standard menu item and must easily be tried by all mouths. The meat patty is so bomb, cooked to a nice pink in the middle and juice flowing. Each component works well but leaves the meat being the hero. The BAO BUN is what differs from other burger offerings as it remains soft but still strong enough to encapsulate the meat and its friends. Such a different bun experience but so good.

Now for the baos, opted for the crackling roast pork belly, crumbed chicken, slow braised pork and beef short rib baos, none of them disappointed. Each bringing a different element on top of a fluffy bao. The clear favourite out of the baos is the crackling pork belly as the crackling skin works wonderfully well with the soft bao. The fried chicken was good in its own right but was a average offering of chicken, sometimes tasting bland and so standard. Wouldnt order the fried chicken again. THE SWEET POTATO FRIES, HANDS DOWN some of the best in sydney wow. Excellently salted.

It took a while but I finally got to try the awesomeness known as Belly Bao. The bao masters have relocated to their own new spot in Newtown. Another good news is that they are open now from Wednesday to Sunday lunch and dinner.
Jess FL
Absolutely delicious and succulent Bao burgers with a hand made patty and soft on the outside / crispy on the inside bun. The Golden gaytime dessert is also perfection - deep fried bao bun, banana, chocolate and biscuit ice cream. Service was fantastic, very friendly, attentive and genuine. Definitely will be adding this place as one of my regulars.
Victoria
I got the braised pork bao and shared a side of sweet potato fries. My friend got the bao burger. The food was delicious and flavourful. But the bao is a bit small so I recommend getting more than one haha. The dipping sauce that came with the sweet potato fries was quite spicy but really good. The service was good, the music is a bit loud and the restaurant is quite dim but it's a good atmosphere. The place does get packed and when we went, many of the tables were reserved. My friend and I went in right when they open so we were able to snag a table. Would recommend that you make a reservation beforehand though. Would go again!

Newtown just got CRAZY BETTER, like if that was even possible! Their Asian Street food inspired menu incorporates Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian flavours fused with popular Western bites, resulting in marvelous food that you won't want to wait to sink your teeth into!

Great vibes, and music that'll really get you going.

Recommendations: The Curry Cheese fries, any Double Baoger or braised meat bao!

Read the full review at kerabeareats.com

@kerabeareats on Insta

Surprisingly there is a overwhelming "BAO" scene in Sydney. I have heard of the name @BellyBao even before I came to Sydney. The Bao restaurant is currently located in the city but is soon moving to NEWTOWN so stay tuned for that! . In terms of their bao, they are definitely different from the @littlebaohk in Hong Kong, mainly because it's a lot simpler and less sloppy. Defined ingredients + minimal sauce + sleeping in a fluffy housemade white steamed Gua Bao.
V
This joint had an awesome vibe to it, old school rnb music playing, chilled environment and decent service. The chicken bao was delicious and it definitely was my favourite, the pork belly bao could have been better (I feel like it was missing a sauce) and the burger was tasty, but I'll definitely stick to baos next time.
Natalie
Amazing place! Managed to squeeze 16 of us in last minute on a Saturday night after another place stuffed us with our booking. So glad it all worked out because everything on the menu was sooo good!! Can't wait to come back!

The buns here are TO DIE FOR!!! I absolutely love it and don't know why I haven't tried it earlier. The bun is so fluffy and flavoursome! I had the crackling pork belly, panko chicken and soft shell crab, they were all delicious and packed with flavour. The sweet potato fries were also really crispy and nicely salted.

Looks pretty dodgy from the outside but it's such a cute quirky vibe inside! Couldn't try the cocktails I wanted to because the staff told me there was some leak that happened(?) so he whipped up some random thing for me, pretty nice!

I have been here so many times and kept returning because the food are so good! Love the fried chicken, the bao and all their punny names. The sweet potato fries is a must order too!
1900.
A bit pricey. It took a long time to be served. But understandable since it's Fri. The bun was ok. personally I didn't really like their wings. The spicy one was too hot, while the sticky one was too sweet. Generally speaking, it's a better place for drink than food

I love belly bao the best out of most bao places!
Their baos are so soft and the flavour is just delicious.
Not ones to shy away from making sure there is enough filling, this place is one of my faves.
Well priced and the dessert baos are to die for!
Definitely recommend visiting.

Food: Quite tasty. Loved the crispy pork and the bao pastry.

Service: Very quick service, however, the girl taking my orders wasn't very welcoming and seemed impatient.

Atmosphere: I really like the Hudson Ballroom as a venue. More lighting couldn't hurt though. As someone with impaired vision, I had to be extra cautious in watching my step. Lively underground vibe.

Price: More than I'd like to pay for food however it is also what I would expect for any place in CBD.

Located on liverpool st, underground, it may look dingy but it actually is quite quirky. The baos are really tasty and flavoursome and reasonably priced. Pork is my fave. The ice cream baos are really good too!

Another disappointing food trip. I ordered chicken wings, crackling pork and braised pork at Belly Bao. The chicken wings were coated with flour and there was minimal marinate. The crackling pork was hard and dry and took me extra effort to bite them, unlike those Cantonese pork belly.

Reception was poor too. It was also stuffy there.

The Baos were amazing.. especially the Pork Belly ones.. Sweet Potato Fries were on point.. Fried Chicken was average.. The Strawberry Bao was a great finish.. Food Coma!!

✔️ GOOD Baos. Fresh ingredients, flavours you can taste. You can see that theres attention to detail and not just a bunch of fillings slapped into a Bao.
✔ ️Theres a bar on the same floor with really yummy cocktails and a cute bartender.
✔️ It's dark and underground lol
✔️ It's reasonably priced.

I will be back for the dessert baos!!

Early bird special for dinner tonight(up at 3am NZ time today), this place rates well and we can understand why. Chose a couple of Bao(short rib beef and Roast pork belly with crackling), sweet potato fries and chicken wings. Delicious food and fun having a bit of a laugh with the staff while we ordered.

Not sure what it is but Aussie sweet potato fries are SOOOO good.

Delicious. Buns seem a bit larger than average. 2 was enough for me. They had special red buns for Chinese New Year that were so fun. It's a great atmosphere. If you're having trouble finding it, you have to go downstairs to enter.
Insta: @voraciousventures

The Thursday special - 'baoger' is one of my favourite burger that I have had.
The crunchy chicken wings are sooooooo good as well. Much better than I expected.
The braised pork belly bao is also nice.

We heard about this place from friends and the food is really tasty and delicious. Basically street food in a nice and chilled restaurant. Happy to visit this place again.

Was unsure what to expect...I've had a few 'baogers' before in Melbourne but this is probably the best I've ever had. As much a burger as anything else - they get the beef, cheese, sauce ratio right and aditions of bacon just cap it off. Loved the raddish as a point of difference - bao buns held up under pressure well too! Gay time bao....enough saidm amazing.

Food was delicious and came out fast, probably the best Bao i have had. The chilli chips were delicious and very morish. The deco is a bit strange but works. We were there on a Thursday so it was pretty quiet but i can imagine it can get really festive. There is a seperate room that had comedy night that seamed to be popular although we didn't go in. Would definitely pop in again for a quick bite.

I tried your crackling pork belly and tofu bao, as well as a bite of a friend's panko chicken breast bao, and the first thing I noticed was a disappointing lack of flavour. The texture of the bao is interesting - less like a dumpling or pork bun, and more like soggy slice of wonderbread. The filling did look kind of nice, FWIW.Belly Bao needs to work on making their food taste like actual things, especially at their high prices, which were a bit of a ripoff. I get that they're going for a fad craze, but yeah, kinda tasteless. But then what do you expect when you're making soggy food with steam?

Rate this 4.5 because:
1. HIGH level of customer service. Staff was very knowledgable on their products and were able to assist us in selecting the food.
2. BUNS WERE AMAZING! We are from Melb and defs can say that it's WAY WAY WAY better than wonderbao. It has the right consistency in flavours. They had different variety in textures, like crispy tofu and the braised beef. It is also much cheaper and probably worth the price.
3. AESTHETIC AND VIBE ON POINT. Definitely a place where you can chill and hang out with friends.

Thumbs up from me!! We end up picking all of the menu.
THE TRAVELLER COUPLE

The Next Rush
These deconstructed hybrid pork buns are awesome. I had a hard time deciding between the braised pork and roast pork with crackling so got em both. Crackling is the winner for me and braised pork sibling is a "meh, ive had better" kind of let down. Next time i work the chicken and seafood items on this menu!!!

Nice place with a tasteful interior decor. This place gets extremely packed on fridays and weekends. We waited 10 mins for a seat and we had to share a table with others. This was fine as the food is totally worth it!

The baos are awesome at Belly Bao. I especially love the tofu bao. On Thursdays go for the baoger, a burger made with a bao bun - even better with a hash brown (although maybe not two hash browns; I regret that choice - a single hash brown is perfect)! The sweet potato fries are delicious and have a spicy mayo drizzle on top.

Dayuuuuum they make some good Bao !

Service was prompt and super helpful, she pointed us in the right direction when ordering. The food was fantastic and those buns melted upon that first bite....

Decided to come here for my birthday dinner after falling in love with baos I had tasted at some food markets a while ago. Booked a booth so we wouldn't miss out, but there's quite a lot of seating available. I ordered pretty much one of everything, pork belly, braised beef, chicken, tofu and soft shell crab.

Food came out quick which was great. Sadly the baos weren't of the same standard I had tasted before (previous baos were from somewhere else). Chicken baos were great and the bf loved the crispy pork. Most of the others were pretty ordinary. The baos do go soggy after sitting for a bit so I recommend eating them asap.

Fried chicken on the other hand was delicious and sweet potato fries were nice and crispy. Drinks are served by Plan B, I had a cocktail jug which was pretty weak. I'd return for the fried chicken and sweet potato fries and a select few of their baos on offer. Price wise it wasn't too bad and staff were quite friendly.

This restaurant was self-service so could not comment really on their service.
I ordered for the soft shelled crab and the roast pork with cracklings baos. Both are really good. The dough was just perfect in complimenting the flavours of the filling. Would I come back again? Definitely!

Glaze your appetite with a dirty cheat meal that is so worth it (and definitely allowed once in a while). Melt your taste buds with the dessert baos, whether it be the matcha strawberry or nutella and banana flavours. Crumble into a basket of crunchy fried chicken before stacking more onto your palate with the doubly patty plus hash brown baoger (only available Thursdays).

Beautifully soft Bao and with the pork and crackling is just beautiful. The chicken is just OK and the long wait to order and get the food, not so much. The beef Bao is also really good so definitely worn heading down here. We got a table straightaway even though it was 7:15 on a Friday. Will definitely be coming back here.

Can't believe I haven't tried this place before, located in a cool downstairs bar it has a nice atmosphere and the food is delicious! Definitely coming back soon

Had a very hipster vibe the first time I stepped inside. The dimly lit atmosphere provides a fun environment to hang with friends. I was worried that finding a table would be hard as it was 6:30pm on a Saturday. However, it was relatively empty and managed to find a table.

Ordered the 2x braised pork belly and one crackling roast pork belly. For dessert, I ordered the "Baonana Split". I felt like the buns itself were quite expensive if you are coming here for dinner as you probably need 3+ buns to be satisfied. One shocker was when I decided to grab a pear cider from the bar, expecting it to be a bottle but was turned out to be a can ($7.5).

Overall, I recommend the Baonana Split which was quite nice. The pork buns were average in my opinion taking price out of consideration. However, it was an average experience and I wished they did deals on the buns (eg. 3 for $18 etc...).

The Good God club (now Plan B) didn’t survive but the Belly Bao kitchen located in this Liverpool Street night club did. The bao dough was soft and had the right amount of give. Any sort of toppings would taste better on this foundation of goodness. The toppings are up to the diner’s preference. Fried chicken is disappointing

Been here more than a handful of times! Each time i come back the staff are still super friendly and willing to get me extra sauce on my sweet potato fries and chicken! All the bao is delicious! My favourite is the pork belly!
Those Who Love To Eat
Taking a leaf out of the original Singaporean Kong ba bao (steam pork belly bun), they have adapted these baos to suit their target market. Knowing the background narrative of this hip street food venture, situated in the plan B club. You walk down the narrow hallway, and out the back is where belly bao can be found. It is... A permanent street food stand with multi colour light bulbs, upside down hanging picket fences in an array of colours; dimly lit tables, with a billard type hanging lights, and dark wooden dining tables.
Now... If you wish to delight and pleasure your taste bud with simple but tantalising baos, book yourself a place, because...
Due to its popularity, you need to actually make yourself known to this little joint in order to experience their artisan goodness, and dining space is limited. For impressive street food will create is own demands. Let's face it, who wants to stand around waiting when you don't really have to!
Now... it's time to knuckle down and give these babies a palate test run.
What we road tested:
3 baos (soft shell crab, crispy tofu, and crispy pork belly) and a basket of sweet potato fries with chili aioli. The fries were gorgeous might I say. As for the baos... My favourite was the soft shell crab. Crunchy and soft that meets each other in the middle like a wheel oiled machine of taste. The condiments of herbs and spices were just enough to bring out the flavour of the crab. Great place to come for some food and drinks! If you feel like a drink and some wholesome pub grub, this is the place you should road test.
Next time, I want to try their bao burger (which is only on Thursday night) and their artery nemesis fried chicken.
