Been there for a lunch once, ordered stewed beef curry with rice. The taste was good, the beef was tender. Besides, the price was quite satisfying, such a large portion of food cost me less than 15 dollars. However, the attitude of the staff there was really bad. She was in such a rush that she asked me to order immediately even I hadn’t got my menu yet!
Probably my favourite Asian brunch spot. Located on Level 2 of the Dixon House building, it’s absolutely hidden with no foot traffic. Though only relying on word of mouth, Ching Yip is always busy, even at 8.30am in the morning.
Today I ordered the sweet corn and beef with rice, and a grass jelly and milk drink. The sweet corn with beef was amazing and though it doesn’t look like much, it has all the right flavours. The grass jelly drink was a bit too sweet, I’d probably stick to the iced milk tea next time.

Nothing aesthetically pleasing, just wholesome food and Hong Kong style cafe.
We came in to try their claypot rice but it's a 30min wait because it was busy so we didn't get it. But make sure you order it ... I will need to come back for it soon.

Always come here for their claypot rice. Not many place have this dish. pork and salty fish is my favourite, the wait is around 20 min.
The hongkong milk tea is very yum as well, it has a great strong tea flavour combine with milk. Although the service is not the warmest, i will still coming back for the food
Food and soup were very good, and it was cheap as ($12 for the set menu). Ambience was '1980s/1990s old-style Cantonese coffee house'.
Service was lacking - it seems they want you in quick and out quicker - but it didn't matter too much to me.
i love me some spam~ haven't had cha chan teng food too many times bt it looked like they got most things here. i could prob make the spam egg rice dish at home when i'm craving tho and the workers asked me what i wanted to order 5 times in a span of 10 minutes like pls be patient with me T^T would come back to try other things on the menu
Most authentic HongKong-style coffee lounge in town. Recommend Ching Yip coffee lounge to all people from HongKong or Canton. All dishes are good!
Quiet in a busy street, it's upstairs, nice place to enjoy . And food is cheap. I ordered pork knuckles with noodles, well cooked and tasty.
A traditional Hong Kong cafe in Chinatown for more than 25 years. This is a regular lunch place for me. I love their ice milk tea and curry beef rice. And thicken creamy chicken rice is very delicious too.
Very standard Hong Kong style cafe that gets the job done when you're craving some simple foods. Service is very rushed and the wait staff gets very angry when you take too long.
Best Hong Kong style cafe in Sydney despite the outdated decor and lack of customer service from staff. Food is always amazing especially the baked pork chop rice and stone pot rice. Been coming since 1998! Pity they close relatively early.
Food is cheap but good. However the customer service is not as good as other tea lounge places. And also there is no lunchtime combo anymore. Would not consider coming back.
typical Hong Kong style cafe menus, the milk tea or coffee is tops , especially the ice tea or coffee, menu is very down to earth Hong Kong cafes thumbs up.
been eating there since 1994, still taste great friendly service.
quiet and clean. recommended highly.
One of my favorite breakfast spot in sydney. Love the hot milk tea and hongkong breakfast. All the staff couldn't speak english but all good, great and affordable. Love it!
Its a typical Hong Kong style cafe back in 80's! Love their milk tea, its authentic and smooth. Had steam mushroom and chicken rice, and fried egg noodle with bean sprouts and pork!
Hong Kong style milk tea is a class of its own, different from other forms of milk tea you are likely to encounter. Also known as the silk stocking milk tea, it gets the signature smooth and intense flavour from the action of straining back and forth through a long cloth sieve that resembles women’s stockings. Lastly, evaporated milk and little bit of sugar is mixed in to create the final cup of goodie.
Ate lunch at Ching Yip Coffee Lounge to satisfy my Hong Kong styled food cravings. We are greeted by the rude waitress who is very impatient to take our orders.

Hong Kong cheese are the three words that come to mind when describing Ching Yip Coffee Lounge . I mean it figuratively and literally. For where else would you find the happy collision of East meets West in this Hong Kong-style cafe that brings you the cu

Back to the future in the surreal 1980's world of Ching Yip Coffee Lounge, a Hong Kong style coffee shop in Dixon House in Chinatown. On the way into town we spot a great sign at the gates of Sydney University... Today we feel like something simple and homely so we head for Ching Yip Coffee Lounge in Chinatown. The first time we set foot in Ching Yip a couple of years ago we thought it was utterly strange: weird 1980's decor with mirrored ceilings, pastel pink walls and a menu that includes luncheon meat sandwiches and spaghetti alongside Chinese classics. It seemed like a surreal Chinese RSL club from a parallel universe. Since then we have been to Hong Kong and realised that Ching Yip is just like a Hong Kong Coffee Shop, but it's still wonderfully weird. There's a nice vibe here on a Saturday afternoon, Hong Kong expats reading the newspaper and having loud conversations in wonderful sing-song, hold-that-vowel-at-little-longer Cantonese; homesick students, families and giggly teenag
1980's Time Machine. I've been eating here since I could barely talk, and it has never gone wrong. The decorations have remained largely the same, so stepping into it feels incredibly like steeping into the 1980's.
The food is hot, fast and good with a great bang for buck, considering prices are pretty much from the 1980's as well. The quality can be a little irregular at times, but it hardly matters for such a cheap eat.
Would recommend the peppered steak & spaghetti and the minced beef sauce with egg on rice.

If you want a quick cheap meal with the feel of a classic Hong Kong cafe , this cafe fits the bill. Upstairs in the Dixon house on Sussex St, and has good chart meals.
I come here for the ambience more than the food. Ching Yip oozes nostalgia. It is for this reason I visit, rather than the HK breakfast fare. Not being a HK local, but being married to one and having watched a few things on TV, this is what I would imagine a coffee lounge in HK would look like. This place looks like something out of the 80's 90's and even has the music from the era playing sometimes. As I grew up in that era, I immediately found this place very soothing and warm. The staff are very friendly and I love watching/listening to them talk/joke with each other.
I have only ever been here for breakfast (despite being awesome, I cannot have Super Bowl congee every morning that I am visiting Sydney!). To my it is quite heavy and oily for breakfast, but I believe it is quite authentic by HK standards.
I would definitely return, probably not for the food, but for the warm and fuzzies I get :-)
A cafe (hidden on level 3 of a long standing shopping centre inside China town) has opened its door for 33years! Although it’s not a fancy cafe like those latest and shiniest, everyone who has dined here has acquainted to the taste and the service here. Sometimes the services can be quite abrupte for some (all part of the authentic experience) but the food, the price, and the experience combined is like no where else. Thanks for all the memories in the past years.
Awesome spot for Hong Kong style food. Usually get the noodles with spam and egg. Super cheap and very tasty. Service is quick and friendly.
Fastest service in Sydney hands down. Food is affordable and with heavy hong Kong cafe influences.
Early breakfasts and great lunch options.
Don't expect service with a smile. Quality, service and price, you can only have two and service isn't one of them.
Feels like the most authentic experience in Chinatown to feel like you have really immersed in the local community. A lot of regulars and Asian costumers. The food is great and cheap and the service is fast and very kind. Would like to experience this again. Bare in mind that it is located in the second floor of the mini mall, so it's not easy to find, but really worth it, very Hong Kong feel.
Let's break it down into a simple analysis:
Service:
-The man serving us was very eager to get an order, probably too eager because we told him we were still looking at the meal and he just stood there waiting for us (a bit of personal space would be nice)
Drinks:
-Got the red bean (Nice but a bit on the sweet side)
Food:
-The oven baked pork chop rice never goes wrong. You can try various flavours for the sauce, Tomato (original), Cream corn (my personal recommendation) and black pepper.
Closest thing you can get to HongKong authentic breakfast place.
Food is not comparable to HongKong but it definitely is worth trying!
Nice small cafe like Cantonese (Hong Kong) restaurant. Prices were good and food quality was good. Nice staff there. Drinks were also nice. Good tea base (茶膽) very good milk tea and lemon tea.
