Review Sky Phoenix - Sydney

It’s a surprise when we had the lunch here. The food is super delicious , it’s such a fine dine but with the reasonable fair price . Highly recommend the chicken soup as well. If you like steam fish , here is the best

Love this place. Delicious fresh food, served promptly and efficiently. Don’t forget dessert - the mango pancakes and egg tarts are the bomb! Convenient location in the city. Get there early to get a table.

Rhodes Phoenix is always busy!! So we come here instead & we like it better than the one in Rhodes but they don’t have the deep fried taro dumpling :( also have to wait forever for the food ladies to come by as they only aiming for the bigger tables.

Had yum cha for dinner on a Saturday night 5.30 PM. It was fairly quiet and the checking in process was easy peasy! The food was also delicious, my favourite was the prawn and chives dumplings and the salted egg prawns! Friendly service, highly recommended! I had yum Cha awhile ago, that was also a great experience 😀

Actually delicious food, served promptly by adequate waitstaff. And that's the one star covered. Unfortunately, the restaurant, namely the manager, spoiled an enjoyable meal in one swift comment. After walking past several times and hovering in the background, mid-meal my friend was told to 'take care of her kid'. A 10 month old baby in a high chair eating rice. Not yelling. Not screaming, Not deliberately throwing food and making eye contact out of spite with staff while doing so. No. Just a well-behaved baby and three adults having lunch together. In the same sitting, we overheard at least 3 other parties who had been mistreated or had elements of their meal completely missing. When my friend asked the speak to the manager, he was all of a sudden nowhere to be found! Almost 10 minutes later (we'd already paid and were waiting at the door) he turned up and we spoke with him. He was indignant and lacked all accountability for his manner and choice of words. We didn't ask for a refund, simply some acknowledgement and an apology. Didn't happen. A very disappointing experience. We will not be back.

my favourite yum cha (this one or the waterloo restaurant). service is friendly (remember dishes i ordered that might not be ready yet). only been here for yum cha but.

My previous experience some years ago was disappointing but decided to give it another go since a friend hasn't been there before. This time we enjoyed the yumcha especially the chicken feet, prawn dumplings, BBQ pork pastry and pork spare ribs. Prices were a bit higher than I remember but then the cost of living has increased. Average cost about $43pp.

Have been many times pre covid and happy with food and service. First time post covid and the staff were incredibly rude, the yum cha trolleys by passed us at high speed or not at all except for 3 trolley each with 2 dishes, the same 2, that went past 3 times ... in TWO hours. When I tried to order something I got an eye roll and a random wave away "ask someone else". And we were charged $15 for cold chinese broccoli. I ended up walking out still hungry and looking for somewhere else to getfood when we're in town ... sad end of an era for what was a great restaurant.
Lumi’s Tongue
Worst fancy Cantonese restaurant in the city! 0/5 would not recommend!

Yum Cha at Sky Phoenix is always consistently good. They have a great selection of dumplings, buns, spring rolls, noodles etc and you can order off the menu if you don’t see what you want from the trolleys. Quick and efficient service every time you go! #skyphoenix

better than the one in parramatta

I do love yum cha at all the Phoenix restaurants. I do believe they do the best dim sims and chicken feet. Their bbq pork is a hit and miss. I do feel their pricing point is on the higher side compared to other yum cha. But on weekend in town, usually there isn’t a wait time to get a table. Service and staff friendliness could be improved. Lucky the food is good and there is variety to cater for all dietary requirements.

Wife felt like yum cha, and just searched on Google and this was the closest one. We were already in the Westfield sky centre and it was located on level 6.<br/><br/>Upon entering, it seemed very busy and had to wait a little while. Once inside there were plenty of tables, and they put us in the corner. Didn't mind.<br/><br/>Very nice restaurant, and feel to it. Ordered the usual tea, and service is very quick today. Plenty of carts, were had the ones we get in Brisbane.<br/><br/>Pork and prawn, chicken feet, Chinese greens and of course girls saw jelly cups and had 2 of those. Flat rice noodles with prawns.<br/><br/>Everything tasted good today, maybe it was we were hungry from all the city walking. But we enjoyed ourselves, just a little better than Brisbane yum cha.
Albert Chen
It’s the most famous chain Cantonese yum cha restaurant in Sydney. Located in the city center, this one was full of localised people, not like other yum chat places.<br/>The food was quite good. However, I am not the expert for Cantonese haha.

Visited here on a short holiday from Brisbane. Had very high expectations for this restaurant as I’ve heard lots from my aunties! <br/><br/>Came here on a weekday lunch and it was extremely busy. Food was yummy but not exceptional, I guess it’s slightly better than Brisbane’s? Carts also moved around very slowly and was a very long wait. Received the bill and WOAH! it was a little out of my expectations, didn’t expect a few plates to come down to almost twice of how much we usually pay in Brisbane 😱! Couldn’t find the prices of the individual dishes on their menu but the aunties did warn us it’d be quite pricey. My partner and I will just stick to Brisbane yum cha then!

Ate dimsum for late lunch here, really hongkong style, they bring the food around table and choose by ourself, ordered a lot, and the taste is good.

Never have written a review before but felt the need to write one. Never even got to try the food because of the disgusting customer service in this place, got yelled at by Lyn at receptionist after I kindly said she missed my number. After being let in sat down for almost 10 minutes and still not being served so walked out of the place. Needless to say but never coming back. <br/><br/>Customer service comes first before any food no matter how good.

A reliable yum cha in the city. Good for a quick feed. If anything’s not hot we always just ask them to heat it up or get us a fresh serve and they’re happy to help

Sky Phoenix Westfield Sydney has nice variety of yum cha dishes. My must haves include prawn dumplings and chicken feet. It’s a shame they don’t have beef tendon, although thats a not a deal breaker for me. They tend to get really busy during lunch but the queue moves fairly quickly. Overall I’ll be back for more delicious food.

Had company dinner there tonight, service absolutely terrible, food serve cold and not on menu order that was provided, traditional entree was served in the middle of all dishes. <br/>Chicken and fish were over cooked, rice and noodle have no taste, beef was also overcooked.....<br/>Our order have over 10 dishes, desserts plates was pushed to be served 40 minutes after the first dish was up, waiters coming around asking have everyone finished while ppl are still eating. <br/>soon enough, we saw them standing around the side, giving each other a freaking massage.<br/>Never had such crappy experience and i think the staff must really hated the restaurant.<br/>Will never visit again if I get to choose!
The Miniature Life
Sky phoenix is a really popular yum cha choice in Sydney's CBD, and I can certainly see why. Now the 4 stars is really for the food and the delicious tastes and flavours that I was presented with, but I did think the food that we ordered took far too long to reach us - this is regards to some vegetarian food! I really liked the variety of dumplings, and dim sum items and liked how quickly our tables were cleared as well. Food is reasonably priced as well! On the weekends I recommend coming in around midday or after to get the max you can out of the food here :)
FluffyHamster
A popular restaurant in cbd. I was really happy with the food ( the chicken feet and prawn dumplings were very nice) <br/>The only problem is that the staff already wanted us to pay the bill even if we were still eating food.
Andylimp12
Fantastic place for Yum cha...Lack bit spicy dish but overall gr8 friday lunch place. Try jasmine tea goes well with good. Mango desert was amazing.
Deb
This place is our group yumcha meeting point 😃 Lots of variety, close to work, price is affordable. It is inside the Pitt St Mall.<br/><br/>I love the sago dessert, ginger tofu (although the ginger taste not that strong) and chicken feet 😝<br/><br/>You will need to call for reservation for lunch, otherwise need to wait quite sometime. Note they only accept reservation for min of 6 ppl, or walk in. Place is quite big and you can request for private room for special occasion.<br/><br/><br/>Yumm
Cinntonic
Huge Yum Cha restaurant in the CBD. Great selection and nicely cooked. Great for team lunches or casual get togethers. The staff can be a bit brash or hard to understand.
Will Choi
Yes it’s a bit pricy however the food is not bad at all. Best option is come as three in a group as most of the dishes have three items. Love the mango pancakes btw. Staffs can be arrogant sometime.
A Guide For Your Appetite
Best Yum Cha by Far!!!!<br/><br/>WOW!!! towards the entry of this restaurant you think.... hmmm it's located at Westfield, is this really big and has good meals... as you enter and turn into the dining location.... WOW... it is huge.<br/><br/>This is a big restaurant, when I say big i mean huge big!. The good thing about eating here is that the atmosphere suits all occasions. Whether you are planning to have a casual meal with friends or a business meeting, it won't matter because there will always be diners with similar occasions as you.<br/><br/>The service is quite quick and prompt and unlike some other Yum Cha restaurants I have visited.... the meal here is always warm.<br/><br/>Unfortunately I can't comment on the price as it was a company expense, however looking at the number of people both in business and non business attire.... I would assume it would be affordable.

The food was really good but the sevice seriously needed effort. We weren't served tea. The basic concept of yumcha is the TEA... We weren't given sauces. Had to ask them more than once. Each time is seemed like they were doing us a favour. The same trolleys kept doing the rounds near us.. Again had to ASK for the springrolls.. and the taro thing.. and the dessert.. hmpf..!!

I went with a group of friends last Saturday and was very disappointed that our table near the wall got very much less choice of food than the tables in the middle aisle. Wouldn't go again.
Weekendfoodescapes
A friend of mine was visiting from interstate and we decide to catch up over some yum cha at the Sky Phoenix at Sydney Westfield. I quite like Sky Phoenix because it is such a large venue and I can always get a table. As I walk in, I notice the modern decore and inviting atmosphere full of families, couples and happy people eating. I know I'll be one of those happy people eating soon enough. I sit down and enjoy the lovely company of my friend. We sip on jasmine tea and catch up on our goals in life.

The last time I ate here was about six months ago with my colleagues for a team lunch. It was super disappointed as the food was below average and the service was really really bad. The manager looking guy was extremely rude to me when I told him that the chicken feet didn't taste right (I trusted my taste bud and was very sure that they were not fresh!!) . He took it away unhappily and came back with a new plate of chicken feet. He then said to me (in Cantonese): if you still find them tasted funny, then don't bother order them anymore in future. This is how they taste like 😡 now I understand why there are no more queues during lunch time like b4, as their service is soooooooo bad! As for the food, not worth mentioning.
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus<br/><br/> Sky Phoenix is a traditional Chinese restaurant chain that serves both yum cha and a la carte banquet food. We visited the one in the CBD for a friends birthday and ordered many different dishes which we will share in this post. <br/><br/>For our savoury dishes we ordered the peking duck to have 2 ways, the first way is with warm pancakes, cucumber and sweet sauce and the second way was to cook the duck in rice and serve it inside crispy baked shells. This was delicious, the peking duck had a crispy skin and was tender, and went perfectly with the fresh cucumber and sweet sauce.

The most yummy yum cha I have ever had in Sydney 😜 what I love best is there is no special menu to order, just grab the dishes u like. also,it is not really expensive, just around 30 dollars for each and u can have a nice Asian style experience. What's more, this is the only yumcha restaurant I want to go twice in a week😜
Intendingtoburn
Took a large group here for a function last month and ordered the $65 banquet. The Peking duck pancakes and sang choy bao were quite tasty, but it was all downhill from there. Good steamed fish is a general expectation of Chinese restaurants, but the Barramundi here was very overcooked. The other dishes (including Shandong chicken and teriyaki beef) were all terribly mediocre. I'm not surprised to read the bad reviews about customer service here.<br/><br/>While the maitre'd was very polite when we arrived, the staff seemed increasing demoralised as the night went on. I later encountered an older, portly man who I presume was the (or an) owner of the restaurant berating the staff in Cantonese. His manner was incredibly rude - both to me and my mother - which was totally uncalled-for given that our group had spent at least $2,500 in total. Guess this restaurant has never heard of the idea that organisational culture is set at the top. It made me particularly sour about the 10% service charge and 2% credit card surcharge that was thrown on top of the bill.<br/><br/>Overall, an average start and a lousy finish. Don't bother.
Ashleigh Thompson
Super rude hostess. Refused to accommodate an extra person to our booking and was super rude about it! Toxic people should not work in front of house hospitality roles! <br/><br/>Had a polite person handled our situation we would have been more accommodating and found a solution without any hard feelings by either party.
Maxine Maxine
Bad customer service!<br/>We booked a table for 8 but had an extra person. The hostess lady who works at Sky Phoenix was absolutely rude and unfriendly and eventually kicked us out. Never return again.

First time when I came here was almost 10 years ago. The place has been renovated since. Have to the food is still tasty and even better than it was before ..my favourite is the mango crepe and BBQ pork rice rolls. The dumplings are really yummy. <br/><br/>Don't expect too much for the services..the grandmas pushing the trolly will even give you a good lesson if you miss their trolly the first round, and order when they come the second round. So.. be careful and don't piss them off...The food makes up for the bad services though!
SuperSamson
Pretty good Yumcha. The food is better than average, but it costs a lot more than other Yumcha restaurants. Probably because of the high rent they need to pay being inside Westfield. The seafood dimsim is excellent.
Foodilicious
I came here for having yum cha and also attending events most of the time. Food is good. Yum cha food is really great. Price is not cheap, by the way. Quite spacious and staff is quite friendly.
Jade
Decent Yum Cha place in the city. They have all the staple favourites and you generally get seated straight away, which is important for a busy office worker. Like all Asian restaurants, it can be hit or miss. Some items are better than others. The prawn and coriander dumpling had a soggy shell and the pork bun was cold inside. The other dishes were all nice.
Michael
Have been here a number of times for yum cha. Food has declined in quality, taste and freshness. Service is really bad too. Not sure if their dinner service has also declined but today's lunch was so bad that I don't want to waste my money here again.
Rose
Went to sky phoenix for yum cha on the weekend with a few other people. The place was very busy, but the food was fresh and tasty. Staff were friendly and efficient - overall a good experience.

Like us you've probably been to one of the restaurants from this very popular chain. There's quite a few scattered across Sydney. This one sits up on Level 5 of Westfield Sydney in their bustling food precinct. We dropped in before a nearby show to grab a quick bite for dinner - as we had assumed the food would arrive fast and be to their usual high standard. It was!
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
I had been here a few times before but haven't reviewed this restaurant till now. Located on the sixth floor at Westfield Sydney.<br/><br/>We came here for a work function. There was copious amounts of food ordered and well and truly more than enough for us to eat. We got a large variety to share so got to try everything. The food was piping hot and it was all so tasty. I was pleased we got everything fresh as at so yum cha restaurants you can tell if they had been circling around for too long. <br/><br/>We were looked after by Ling and she was excellent!

I attended a wedding banquet last Saturday, and was impressed with the dining room, the service and the food.<br/>The room was intimate and relaxed, with subdued lighting mostly, the staff very attentative, and quick to fulfill requests, and the food, well let's say, it was top class Hong Kong style. Mixed roast meats were tasty and moist, the yam ball stuffed with scallops were something new and delightful, and extra large coral trout (which could have been called Moby Dick!), came steamed with soy and shallots was quite delicate, then the best lobster I have ever tried came. Following this was abalone, garlic fried chicken, more scallops and prawns, and I was busting...but had 3 more courses to come!<br/>I'm coming back tomorrow for Yum Cha!!
Goopee Howard
I have only been to Sky Phoenix for yum cha. I find that the quality is good and the yum cha menu has more of the usual yum cha items. The price is a little steep I have discovered compared to the Marigold or Palace. But it is a newish and bright space.
Arijit Das
Very busy but decent yum cha place. We have visited Sky Phoenix in the CBD as a group on the weekend. Found both quality of food abs service to be good - as expected. Staff accommodated my crazy request for more and more chilly oil! And the Mango desserts are just out of this world!
Elisa Li
I've had yum cha at the Castle Towers, Parra and Rhodes Phoenix before, but first time in the Sydney Westfield one. I guess after going to HK numerous times and having yum cha quite often, it's hard to find a good yum cha in Sydney. . We were seated near the entrance away from where everyone else sat, and the window tables were also all booked out that day, so it felt like we weren't offered more selection. I would have like bigger prawns and thinner skin in the dumplings. It is more on the expensive side which is expected with any of the Phoenix restaurants. I would say the city one is average, I remember Rhodes being more fresh. At times, you could see the deep fried stuff on a trolley at the back going cold after no one wanted it on their first round, they would re-wheel it back out to see if anyone else wanted it...Lunch was around $25pp.
Rebecca Tay
The quality of food here is decent but as other reviews have noted, service is rushed. We were on a table near the window so it was hard for carts to come close.<br/>We were charged $6.80pp for tea which is the most I've ever been charged at a yum Cha place.
Jmanchatty
Pretty ok yumcha place and went here with a bunch of colleagues for lunch. Service was a bit rushed given it was lunchtime. The food quality was pretty decent and would recommend for a group lunch
MVN
We go here for team lunches. The quality of yum cha is pretty decent. Definitely better than Palace down the street but it is pricey for what you get.
Tracey
As my friend so eloquently puts it, "yum Cha for white people". Average at best and way overpriced - $40 and I was hungry within 5 minutes. Even the mango pancakes were a letdown (90% cream, 10% mango??)
Kai Luv
An upmarket yum cha restaurant for the business crowd. The yum cha trolleys keep coming, not the most adventurous that you might find, but the food is always well done. It's a good option for going out with a group of colleagues for lunch, but likely feeling the competition from New Shanghai down below.
Claudia
If there are zero mark I would rate it zero. Poor customer service, I've made reservation of 10 person, however instead of one big round table for ten person they gave us two small round table. We've spoken to the staff and that lady been very rude, stated that the restaurant make table arrangement and they have no responsibilities to inform us that big table turns into 2 small one. If you accept it, stay, otherwise please go elsewhere.<br/>If they inform us earlier we could booking other restaurants in advance, she just ruined our weekend. Never go there again!!!
Jessica Nguyen
If I could give this place a zero I would. I was at their East Village restaurant the week prior, and having raved about the quality and value of their duck dishes, took a few colleagues to City one. <br/><br/>I do not expect much in terms of service at a Chinese restaurant, I have eaten out enough to know better. But this was so far below par, they should be out of business. <br/><br/>I naively thought the menu would be the same across their venues, asked about the whole duck combo and was quoted $90. That's $27 more than it's East Village branch, and $2 more than if we had ordered individual servings. When I tried to clarify the menu, the waiter actually raised his voice at me. <br/><br/>We also ordered other bits and pieces including wine, which all came out late, the entire ordeal took over 2 hours. We constantly had to prompt them to bring our food, and eventually the bill. We asked about desserts, if we get complementary fruits (again very common at Chinese restaurants, including their Rhodes and East village branches) the waiter gave a curt "no", then walked away. No one came to settle our bill until we got up and stood in the middle of their restaurant. I then very reluctantly handed over the $175 they did not deserve from the three of us, and we walked out unanimously agreeing never to return. Our yumcha experience was not much better. AWFUL and a disgrace to the culinary industry.
Tiffany
Nice interior design for this yum cha restaurant and perfect before start of shopping in pitt street. Their food improved compare with my last visit. Prawn dumpling and spinach prawn dumplings are very nice!
Polito
The location is good and the restaurant itself is very modern with large windows facing onto Castlereagh St the view itself is nothing special.<br/><br/>Have not been here for many years; the service itself is nothing special. No one at the front door, had to enter the restaurant to get someone's attention. Then the table service itself was indifferent. Not rude, but they obviously didn't want to be there.<br/><br/>The food was ok (one dish never arrived) the other dishes were small and food wasn't as hot as it should be. At all Chinese (Canto) restaurants your food usually arrives steaming hot.<br/><br/>There are much better Chinese options in Sydney, though in the CBD itself I would try Palace Chinese on Castlereagh.<br/><br/>
Brian.ko.sydney
Ok, where to start? Firstly, I've been a customer of Sky Phoenix CBD for probably over 10 years, and a key part of its success has been filling a need when no other real options were available in the area, and that need for city workers and shoppers is decent yum cha in the CBD (does not include Chinatown).<br/><br/>Even though I've been a patron for so long, it is clear that the business, which at its core should be providing great food and outstanding service, has gone south. During Boxing Day this year, my wife needed to retrieve a high chair for our daughter herself while the lazy staff watched on. Let me be clear here, the restaurant was not busy at that time of morning and the staff that were being lazy were not the workers in the black shirts but the more senior staff with the ill-fitting white shirts and incorrectly placed tie-bars, and also the door wenches who show you to a table but decline to be of assistance thereafter. If anyone knows the guys with the white-shirts and cone-shaped heads please pass on to them that a tie-bar should be placed between the 3rd and 4th button. This will go someways to converting their clown outfits into proper restaurant attire. <br/><br/>Over a 45 minute sitting we were only able to order 4 dishes. This was consistent with my last visit to the restaurant, which I passed off as a once-off. However, twice in a row is becoming a trend in my book. They seem to offer the usual dim sum and har gow in one trolley and all the other trolleys are filled with premium priced bbq meats which is designed to capture higher margins for the restaurant. Not only that, they charged us $40 for these 4 dishes and Chinese tea, which they pinged us with at almost $7, and did not refill our teapot.<br/><br/>For western palettes - please do not go here, for what you think might taste ok is really not, and the restaurant is actively targeting you to take the higher margin plates. The contrast with how they deal with Asian customers and Caucasian customers is stark. They know that Asian customers are not going to go for the plates that have significant markups and which can be bought from Chinatown at a fraction of the price (e.g. BBQ pork, duck, pork buns, and Asian greens). It also seems that the pork buns are not store made, I wouldn't be surprised if they came in a 6 pack with a styrofoam backing board and a 3 month expiry date.<br/><br/>So in summary, my issues with the restaurant are with their poor food quality, lack of selection, exhorbitant prices (who charges $7 for one pot of tea?), and non-existent customer service (there is no way that my wife should be walking 30 metres for a high chair and be watched by the white shirts as she removes the chair from the pile. Not only that, as she walked past with the highchair, one of the white shirts walked up to a table of Caucasian diners and asked if they needed anything, just as my wife walked past lugging the highchair. We then had to wave this guy down to get some tea as we were being ignored). <br/><br/>I lodged my complaint with the token Caucasian employee who coincidentally is manning the front door as a show of diversity and being western-friendly, but she was in no mood to understand what my issues were and merely took my table number before ushering me on. I guess bad manners are influenced by the culture of those you surround yourself with.<br/><br/>In terms of alternatives, I would offer the following - Chinatown: Zilver, The Eight; Chatswood: Tim Ho Wan, and the old Kam Fook in Chatswood Westfield (one floor or so down from the cinemas).<br/><br/>The one thing for us yum cha fans to look forward to is Tim Ho Wan opening downstairs from sky phoenix. They will certainly drag patronage away from Sky Phoenix and maybe we will start to see a return to good food and quality service, too bad I won't be putting down my hard earned dollars to see this happen.
The Napoli Alert
Have not been here for a long time as have never rated it and the visit last week affirmed my view.  Very average quality yum cha, not great ingredients or flavour.  Poor service - drinks took 20 minutes to arrive.  The thing that keeps it going is that it caters well to very large groups and you can actually book unlike most yum cha venues.  For CBD yum cha Palace is a much better alternative.
Jewel Eats
I really enjoyed the Rhodes branch and was expecting more of the same at the city restaurant. Seems that the quantity has shrunk, or maybe it's my imagination. Also the variety of yumcha dishes seems to be less than Rhodes. Upon request for other varieties of dishes such as variety of dumplings or bubs, the waitress informed us that we have to request a special order. Oh dear.. Think I will go back to the suburbs for yum cha.
KYChingS
Awesome dim sum. Generous servings at affordable prices. Will definitely try to make another trip down before heading back to our hometown. Efficient service. Best to make reservations if in a big group.
David Food Leasing
Do: the roasts meats. I'm not ordinarily a fan of roasts meats at yum cha but these guys do it very well. <br/><br/>Don't: just rock up. Make a booking or put your name down, otherwise it will be a long wait. <br/><br/>Tip: save room for the mango pancake.
Iluvfood
Nice place or Yum Cha! Not too super busy like in Chinatown but with equally, and perhaps better quality, tasty food. Efficient service, lots of trolleys goin round the room.
Nourishment Bowl
Came here for lunch on a Thursday and enjoyed lots of their yum Cha dishes. Their dumplings and dim sums were yummy. Service was pretty good although they can be pushy with you taking dishes. For a group of 10 it wasn't too expensive at all.
Kis The Cook
We visited Sky Phoenix for Yum Cha. Servings were pretty good, some of the new dishes I tried were amazing like the crispy beef strips. Speed of service was quite quick and the quality of dishes varied and tasty. Would recommend it for a visit.
Joe
Standard yum cha. I only like the chicken feet since it is a bit spicy. I hate their chili ketchup. The kale is fresh though. No doubt that the shrimps inside the har kaw etc is fresh but can't compare with HK or Singapore, even a not famous one.
Parramatta Foodie
Came here recently for a farewell dinner. I found the service to be quite rude and dismissive and the food was luke warm and nothing to write home about. <br/><br/>It is disappointing because I have been here previously for lunch and have had a very positive experience. It seems as though the service has gone downhill.
Kytkat
Always busy, but always so yummy. Red bean pastry dessert is delicious! And mango pancakes of course, too. Make sure to book before arriving!
Taryn Buchan
Efficient seating and service. <br/>Always busy.<br/>Huge range of dishes to choose from. <br/>A good choice in the city to avoid the food court, but a much larger price tag.
Iheartfood
Absolutely APPALLING service!!! We've never experienced such rudeness from a waitress before. Food is overpriced too. Please do yourselves a favour and don't come here.
Ningjaeats
Steam your appetite with the variety of yum cha favourites on offer at the highly reputable Asian restaurant including dim sims, crispy beef and more. Garnish with my favourite asian dessert of all-time ; mango sago.
Insatiable Munchies
Being one of the Phoenix group of restaurants, the Sky Phoenix complies to a basic standard of food: food is served fresh, and hot. <br/><br/>The service, on the other hand, can get pretty shabby, ranging from constantly lingering waitstaff who literally stare at you eating, to being completely ignored when the going gets busy. The trolley ladies can get pretty pushy, with one of them suggesting (in cantonese of course) that I should get the Char Siu Buns (which I never get) because I was with white friends, and "they all like this type of thing". No thank you. <br/><br/>If i were to go into the city for yum cha, I would rather take the extra 15 minutes head toward somewhere like Marigold, where the food is better, and you get more bang for your buck. Not a cool experience.
Yestal11
Horrendously overpriced. My boyfriend and I had 7 dishes (4 of which were vegetarian) and tea and the bill came to $95! Food is average at best and definitely not worth the price
Asassigal
Disappointing. Terrible service, rude staff, cold fried food and when asked for a fresh set NUKED IN THE MICROWAVE... that did it for me. Not bad dumplings but lacking in variety. All up... I wont be back and WOM is a powerful thing. Not good Sky Pheonix.
DownToFeed
We tried a variety of dishes and from what we sampled there was a good mix of traditional flavours and western inspired dishes. And portions were generally enough to share between a small group of 4 people
Collette Van Rooyen
Sky Phoenix is the choice for today and though not the most authentic of the big China Town experiences the dishes are reliably good (and conveniently located for a spot of Zara shopping pre or post your fill).
All About Food Blog
If you want to eat Yum Cha without having a sense of rushed, Sky Phoenix is the place to be. <br/><br/>We always start our Yum Cha session with prawns: prawn dumplings (har gow), prawn siomay (shu mai, shaomai – however you want to pronounce it) and prawn rice noodles. They are the three not-to-be-missed dishes when I tried a new yum cha restaurant.
Confessions Of A Glutton
The fillings of the dim sums were all faultless and with good quality ingredients, and the dim sum sizing was generous per portion. The skins were a little over-cooked in some cases and so burst open too easily when picked up with chopsticks, but you can never tell whether it's someone's clumsy chopstick skills or the fragile nature of the pastry.<br/><br/>And just because I was with boys, I had to make sure they were full to the brim and so ordered something more carby, the BBQ pork buns which were just slightly sweet and quite satisfying, full of tender shredded pork and a good tang of sauce.

Jugernauts.com | First time I’ve been back to Sky Phoenix in the CBD, since the old place shut for reno. Used to go all the time when it was at the middle mall above borders/next to Bing Lee. 65/2 persons and we’re both gut busting. This was a good feed, speedy service with some amusing interactions with the cart ladies. Tea was served the minute we sat down. All the dishes were very good – standouts include the yam thing that looks a bit like a birds nest; the boneless duck; and prawn siewmais. There was only so much prawn/pork you can eat so we also had the ricepaper roll steamed with vegetable medley. Good.   Desserts, glutinous rice ball with custard. Piping Hot.

GOD, this was good. They definitely didn't skimp on the salted peanut brittle, which was amazing and crunchy without being too crunchy, if you know what I mean - I didn't chip a tooth. A banana custard supported the brittle, and a thin pastry crust encased the whole thing; delicious madness!

I love yum cha plates, so put another bun on the trolley baby! Everything comes from the trolley: True to traditional Yum cha places. Monsieur has his usual BBQ pork, which is orangey (the way it should be!) and competes with our favourite BBQ pork bun from East Ocean.

A very convenient and easy place for yum cha...Its great that you can book because it means you dont need to worry about wasting half your lunch hour waiting for a table. :)
Sydney Shop Girl
...a winning combination of great service, food and very pleasant decor.
Insatiable Munchies
It's definitely consistent, and it's a great option in the city, especially if you're meeting friends for a shopping trip, and feel like going for some dim sum.

On the top level of this arcade is Sky Phoenix, a Chinese restaurant known for their yum-cha. So yum-cha I had. I had a really enjoyable experience and can see why this place is popular.

...this newly refurbished Sky Phoenix can accommodate up to 400 people at any one time. The restaurant was really vast with big tall glass windows, I also love the grey and red colour scheme all round the place.

a girl (or two) can only eat so many dumplings in one sitting. seeing as i’m pescetarian, i was slightly limited for choice but i made sure to leave with a full stomach, as always.

It's been a couple of weeks since opening, but the crowds have not yet dissipated from the spacious, marbled and glamorous insides of the new Westfield Sydney. I'm not sure how much shopping is actually being done as opposed to sticky-beaking, but with Ch

The prawn dumplings (har kow) were plump and packed with prawn and the rice flour rolls (cheong fun) were fresh and silky. Another excellent choice were the naturally sweet and fleshy spare ribs with a good proportion of pork belly and bone. My all time favourite, the yam puff (woo kok) had an amazingly light, wispy coating and stuffing of minced vegetables and pork.
I Ate My Way Through
At Sky Phoenix, the ambiance feels brighter and more glamorous. We note that the dishes are about 40cents more expensive than at Palace (small are $5.90, medium are $6.90 and large are $7.90) but this seems justifiable purely based on the ambiance.Almost all the dishes are flawless. The braised chicken feet are notably more fragrant in star anise and ginger notes than at Palace, but the texture isn’t as gelatinous, nor is the sauce thick enough to cling on and disguise the chicken feet from what it really is. The cheong fun, especially the char siu one blows us away. They’re utmost moist, the balance in the soy sauce is spot on.

RUDE!. Just called to book a table for Friday yumcha lunch and can't believe how rude the lady was on the line! I can only have the table for 1.5 hours and when I asked whether it's at all possible to have the table for longer, I found myself confronted with a short "NO" as if what I requested was the most ridiculous thing in the world! I'm not looking forward to meeting such rude front of desk and wait staffs...

Nazi seating assistant - Lyn. Why do Australian Yum cha restaurants think that having a dragon at the front desk yelling numbers is good for their brand. The only saving grace is the decent food. The Seinfeld espisode of the soup nazi is not a best pratice guide for restaurants. You are in the service industry for goodness sake, a smile will not actually kill you.

Sky Phoenix. Best yum cha in Sydney. <br/>Good place to come for lunch during a work break if you are short for time.

Average at best. As my mum and I haven't been here since the renovations (which was many years ago), we decided to meet my brother here for lunch. When we first came it was pretty quiet so staff were quick with our requests, but later we found some of the staff rude when it got busier. <br/><br/>Food was okay, we prefer some other places for yum cha but I do like their ham soi gok? (Mince meat inside a sticky pastry and deep fried). As it got closer to 12.30pm the place was very busy.

Me and my friend went to this restaurant in the city today. As soon as we got seated there was so much pressure to have yumcha that we could not even discuss amongst ourselves if we want to have alacarte or yumcha. Anyway so we had yumcha as we had too many staff people around us. One waitress came and asked us if we want to have green tea and we said yes sure. The food in yumcha was way below average and absolutely cold!! Then we ordered a dish from alacarte which was meant to be boneless chicken but had chunks of bones!! We were suprised and called one of the staff although she was apologetic but least she could do was give us another chance to order and this dish was also soo cold. It was full of pineapple and nowhere in the description of the dish was mentioned that it will be on a bed of pineapple. When our bill came to our surprise we were charged for green tea 6$ for 2 greeen teas wowwwww!!! Isnt it supposed to be free specially in a chinese restaurant? The way she asked us for green tea was as if its complimentary. And btw green tea was also cold. This place is a rip off, useless cold food and impatient staff.

Came here for a wedding banquet & it was terrible!! The food was so average & wait staff obviously hate their jobs! So many times they saw me wave them down for a drink & they ignored me. I had to speak with the manager who also was very indifferent to the polite feedback. <br/>We did their yum cha a few years back & it was underwhelming & expensive, not sure if it's improved but based on the last experience it is unlikely

Simon Food Favourites review. If you can get past the overwhelming perfunctory service and cope with the small sized square tables more suitable for two people rather than four there's some nice yum cha dishes to be found. Quite liked the spring rolls, sui mai and mango pancakes today. Ask a waiter for chinese broccoli in oyster sauce and it came out from the kitchen as just all thick stalks — not happy. I spoke to a senior service staff member about it and said there was no leafs on it and it was disappointing to receive. She replied that's how we serve it. I said what about all the leafs. She replied they cut them off and throw them in the bin. If I was to reorder it again it would come out the same. To me this was very strange as every yum cha I have ever been to, including Sky Phoenix before, it was always served with mostly leafs and some stalks underneath. I said I'd cancel the order then and she agreed to take it off the bill. About 5 minutes later she came back and said if you get it from the yum cha trolley is has mostly leaves. This basically contradicts what she just told me. About 10 minutes later a trolley of nice looking and leafy chinese broccoli with oyster sauce came past. We got one of these and much better and to our liking. If the service smiled just a bit more and didn't look so unhappy I think I'd like this place more but because of the service it's not one of my favourite places to visit for yum cha. It did win the Sydney Food Bloggers Choice Awards for Favourite Yum Cha in 2013 which is why I wanted to try it again. I guess it depends who you get and where you're seated. Some of the younger staff seemed more helpful and willing to provide friendly service.

Less than underwhelmed. My first impression was an old Chinese women greet us when we arrived by telling us abruptly that we were over 10 minutes late and that we should not expect a table. Within minutes a table materialised - making me wonder why she felt the need to be so rude.<br/>Trolley carter pushers spoke English poorly and made it hard to understand us. The wandering wait staff were obviously a) related to old woman at the front desk or at least b) trained in customer service by her.<br/>Average food, noisy, poor service did not prepare me for a reaction to MSG ( i am thinking it was the shiny sauce on the steamed bok choy). Spent the rest of the afternoon sweating with head spins.<br/>Surprising it will be the last place i would return to for a team lunch!

Jules. Overpriced and totally bad service. Abrupt and rude waitstaff, yet they charge an arm and leg for crappy service.... What a joke!!! Happy to pay more if service is good but at this level, better to eat at the food court downstairs.
Vdz_and_klr
Shit service sure, but food and price at lunch were good. I think the reviews for this are too harsh- atleast for lunch...we fed 4 people with tea midweek for $52.40 and the food was good (not great)

Bad Chinese Food - do not come here. I came here last night for dinner and have not experienced such terrible chinese food for a long time! My family ordered the chinese banquet menu because it was Chinese New Year which cost $1200. When we first walked into the restaurant, it was pretty quiet and we were thinking, this is great because we can have a quiet dinner. Now I know why its so quiet, because for the price of the menu, the quality of the food was SHOCKING. <br/><br/>Even if we had paid half the amount at another restaurant, the food quality would have been better. <br/><br/>A review of a sample of the dishes:<br/>1. Suckling pork for entree - pork was NOT crackling and tasted like a dish that had been cooked the previous day<br/>2. Live Lobster - although this was probably considered to be one of the better dishes, everyone found this to be overcooked<br/>3. Live fish - this tasted like a fish that had either died in the previous few days, or it was frozen.<br/>4. Crispy Skin Chicken - chicken came out cold and overcooked.<br/>4. Red bean and glutinous flour dessert - glutinous flour dessert was uncooked.<br/><br/>All the savoury dishes were too salty. It was so dissapointing that I would definitely not recommend anyone come back here for dinner. You can get better chinese food at a 1/3 of the price at other restaurants.

Terrible service, average food. Been here twice for weddings. Both times- food was average for Asian, and service was absolutely terrible!! First occasion, the waitress grunted to communicate, taking away plates before we were done and pretty much rushed us out when the night was over (10pm). The second occasion, grunts again, but this time added with pushes and angry looks- she was getting angry at US for not understanding what her grunts and pushes were!! She wanted us to move over so she could put all the plates down in one spot and we would distribute them so that she wouldn't have to serve each of us. When we ordered drinks, we were ignored or given the hand. They were just plain rude!! They overcharge, I'm sure they could spend a little more and hire staff with manners. Lucky we were with great company. Don't book for weddings if you want a lovely, memorable evening- or they could just remember it as the poor wedding...

Rip off! $62 for 2 people for yumcha?!? Too expensive, food taste and service are not worth it. Had salt/pepper squid which was way too salty, 3 dimsum, 1 mango pancake, 1 mango pudding and had service water. Very disappointing!

Rip off. The chargeable items were rip-offs!<br/>"entry fee" $2.80 per person<br/>tea - astonishing $6.20 per person.<br/><br/>beware, these prices are not indicated anywhere until the final bill.<br/>I find it ridiculous to be charged $6.20 per person for tea. For me and my partner, that's $12.80 for a pot of tea.<br/><br/>End up spending more $70 for 2 persons. but we had 3 specials which were $12.80 each. Not surprising taking consideration of the prime location. But to be charged $18 even before ordering food. that's daylight robbery. The staff were really rude too. <br/>See if you guys can spot, they seat "foreigners" at the front and allocate asians to the back of the restaurant. Don't mean anything, but just a observation.<br/><br/>Recommendation - don't go there. try Zilver or Marigold in Chinatown

Shocking service yum cha food cold and greasy. Just not nuce have given them 3 goes

Shark Fin Shame!!!. I attended a wedding reception here and was horrified to find that this restaurant was serving shark fin soup! This is no better than serving whale meat or puppies or kittens. The rest of the dishes were passable considering they were catering to such a large group. But seriously, how can you possibly justify mutilating and murdering sharks? I will not be returning.

Not what I Expected. Been here before mostly on business related stuff but yesterday had the opportunity to try this place on a weekend. Four of us had a good location beside the main aisle even if we did not have to wait at noon. The table was a tad small to encourage us to order more. The selections were limited for a Saturday and most stuff were deep fried. The marinaded crunchy squid stood out. The lack of choice made us adjourn to Ippudo ramen downstairs.
