I have been here several times now and ordered a variety of dishes. It's your standard Chinese food but sometimes that's what my friends and I crave. Sweet and sour pork, noodles, wontons, Asian greens etc. No fussing over presentation. Food on a plate.

Decor is simple. Menu is complex and includes dishes for everyone from food wimps to culinary adventurers. Quiet in the early evening, but steady take-out traffic kept things humming.
Sour Sunday Sydney. So there I was, in Sydney on Sunday and wanting Thai. I don't know where Thais go on Sunday in Sydney but it is not to work in restuarants seemingly. I settled for Chinese. The Haymarket Chinese Restuarant is not remarkable but the service was prompt and friendly. I was initially not hopeful as Sussex street had other restuarants bursting at the seams with Asians and this did not although it started to fill the moment I entered (~7.30pm). It's a basic cafeteria-style establishment although clean and not at all shabby. Now I like spring rolls, you can tell me I lack scope but I have found that if there's effort in the spring rolls their's more the rest of the menu. The spring rolls were not good. Airy, deep-fried hard and served with a sticky sweet chilli sauce (with Ketchup in it for crying out loud). So onto the chef's speciality, three-sauce chicken hotpot. It was large searing hot serving which I could not finish. It had an initially and pleasingly sour flavour (dried ginger, two types of onion- amongst other things) but fairly quickly became tiresome. As I write this, about two hours later, I can still faintly taste it either side of my tongue. Don't let all this put you off though, I have to say I think I chose the wrong thing and the hotpot, while not quite landing squarely on my palette (I really really wanted Thai...), it was good and was an exception to my spring-roll rule. Go in and try something else.
Best Food & Good Value. Best chinese restaurant in sydney that I ever had. Fresh seafood and good value. Especially fish congee and seafood hotpot.
