Conveniently located close to major attractions in Haymarket, Steam King offers unique and one-of-a-kind dishes that are not your typical Asian food. Some of the dishes are Cantonese influenced and the others are quite common type of dishes.
I highly recommend you to try their Double Steamed Chicken Soup. Absolutely beautiful and you can tell from the flavours that it has been cooked using the double steam method for quite a long cooking time. My favourite was the one with coconut. And it was served beautifully in a coconut!
Their Golden Prawn w/ salted egg yolk was also delicious.
The only downside is the portion. I wish it was bigger considering the price is not low. But then again, their food is very special and some dishes take a long time to produce.
Our dining experience at the Steam King restaurant was an amazing one. I was kindly invited to join a business dinner awhile ago and was delighted by the variety of flavours and the simplicity of ingredients. So many different aromas.. the presentation and service were flawless and the lychee vinegar masquerading as a delicate moscato (at least that what I thought it was was it was being poured til I was told what it actually was) was mind blowing.... This was the first and most certainly not the last time to come to this fine establishment and I am looking to my second visit which is already booked for next week with a new group of people I wish to share this wonderment with !! Sincere congratulations on this establishment.
Abdolutely amazing experience for dinner here. Major points for the level of service which was really top notch
Loved the soups, very tasty especially the Buddha's delight with abalone and shark fin
The housemade tofu is absolutely amazing, very smooth in texture and the sauce is amazing
Almond dessert soup was great too although a bit on the sweet side. The sweet dumplibgs with it was delicious, absolutely love the sesame inside. The right amount of flour and sesame
A bit on the pricier side though but expected considering what you're eating
Absolutely recommend and will revisit
It appears there are some reviews that thought it was pricey, however I thought it was fair for the ingredients and time it took to prepare some of those dishes. Just because it's a Chinese restaurant doesn't mean they can only charge food court price. I'd recommend this place to anyone for an true Cantonese cuisine experience.
Unique in Sydney, they specialise in herbal soup that's been cooked in a special double layered pot. Don't be put off, it's not as earthy as traditional Chinese medicine. There's a decent range to try.
Soft shell crab is coated with salted duck egg yolk for extra richness. Vegemite lamb is interesting too.
lovely food, the soup was amazing. The service was great. definitely going back again
I don’t know how I came to love soup so much, I think I simply grew up drinking it. Soups to me is very important, I can drink any kind of soup every single day!
Double steamed soup at steam king are SO GOOD !!! They’re so traditional and are delicious !!! Hot soup “clear my heart” and steam king offers so many different kind of soups, we had the Buddha jump over the wall, coconut chicken and pork ribs soup, they’re all super yummy, as well as other dishes during the dinner! The papaya & bird nest for dessert absolutely blow our mind!!! 💖🙌🏽
Hands down the best Cantonese food I’ve had in Sydney! Truly authentic. The soups are the best - traditional and delicious! Love the ambiance too. Everything reminds me of home. It’s on the pricey side but I’d say it’s worth it considering the quality of food and the scarcity of a gem as such on a foreign land.
Most of dishes are steamed, very healthy and tasted awesome! The Buddha jumped over the wall is my favourite dish! The shark-fin cooked at a whole batch which you couldn’t find the same quality anywhere else in Sydney. Visited this place a few times and will go back at least 3 times a year. However I don’t suggest any large group booking. It’s perfect for small group no more than 4 ppl.
16/03/21 updates for basin cuisine:
We ordered the basin cuisine for lunar New Year festival. SteamKing is the only restaurant in Sydney, who use the dry abalone instead of frozen abalones. The fish fins & dry scallops are as good as always. The prawns are bit dry. It meant to be juicy.

Very delicious fine Chinese food. A little expensive but the quality of food is very high, and ‘delicacy’ foods are often used. Highly recommend the steam prawns with garlic and glass noodles.
Like most of the old restaurant around market city. The store has a very small entrance that blends into the surroundings. But once you are inside, you'll appreciate the decorations and the staff.
They get pretty good soup if you are after the taste of home, especially in a cold day. You can tell they don't pre-process the ingredients that go into the soup because all the proteins become really dry and chewy. So it's better to judge them based on the soup, not the meat inside.
Most of their food are quite generous in portion. However, the price is quite high and probably not a good daily choice. Another thing to note is there is no bathroom in the restaurant. You need to go the shopping mall across the street. The owner also tries to cut some corner by not turning on the air conditioner, so bring your jacket.
Elegant environment under a bit pricey menu.
(Around 80 dollars for 2pp)
Service is nice and welcoming.
Food is above average city restaurants
