Review Friend In Hand Hotel - Sydney

Vaclav Wichta
Food had gone downhill. Had not been at the Friend in Hand for a couple of years and was incredibly disappointed with the latest experience. Always loved the vibe, was reasonably priced for drinks and meals. Ordered a veal Parma, was given a schnitzel which they fixed up. When the Parma arrived, I was disappointed to find they now use processed burger cheese and tomato sauce (no ham). Tasted absolutely disgusting, and when I questioned the use of the cheese I was told that's what they now use. Worst Parma I've had, won't be eating here again.

Retro pub really good for meeting friends. Has lots of character. Has some really hearty and great tasting and well priced meals. All meals basically range from $15 to $20 and are large, fresh and made to order. Burgers, schnitzels, lasagna, meatballs, amazing shoe string fries, etc. Weeknight specials as well. Georgie the cockatoo who lives in the pub is a real hoot. Well worth visiting this Glebe gem.

One of the only authentic public bars in Sydney. There is a resident Sulphur-crested Cockatoo that even has favourite patrons and the staff are amazing and friendly. A real gem in a picturesque part of Glebe, with great people watching opportunities (trust me, its a blast)! If you are meandering down Glebe Point Road, duck down for a drink - they have Canadian Club on tap!

We just moved into the area so we were keen to try a local pub two minutes walk from us. We both had the Chicken Schnitzel. Tasted like it could be wonderful unfortunately it was let down by the bitterness from unclean oil. The barman whom we ordered the meal from was great He made us a great strong G&T!

I don't drink at pubs. Twice I've been there for a meal and not at all impressed. The food was medium grade and the service was nothing to wrote home about. But they seem to be busy. Their best deal is 2 for 1 on Tuesdays, which is obviously popular.

Nice little pub lots old pics and number plates, Staff friendly beers cold. But the food was disappointing and very simple. And as the saying goes you get what you pay for. Just a tip for the cook. That's not a chicken parmigiana. No photos of food not worthy of pics..

This spot is amazing! The staff is incredibly friendly. Especially the cockatoo, Georgie! She is an absolute treasure. Can’t wait to go back for a few pints.

What a wonderful iconic pub. It's changed owners tonight but the old owners are back with a new generation. Great stories come from this pub. Great music too. An original. A pub for the people.

Nice ambient, good prices and big dishes. I've tried the cheese burger and the chicken parmigiana. The burger was really good, delicious meat, well cooked, basically perfect. The chicken was a big dish with chips and salad, tasty but I think it needed a bit of salt, other than that all good. The decoration of the pub is really funny, full of very strange and interesting objects. Very friendly staff.

Service< Staff seemed bored to even serve us.
Food< Cold pasta full of onion and loads of salt
Atmosphere< This use to be a fun place to go and get a meal, now feels tired and lacks any feeling really. If you're going to have Italian food, get an Italian chef, is my suggestion. Management needs to kick the staff up the bum, get a new person running their kitchen and look at making this little pub work again, especially as there is so much new construction in the area bringing new residents.

I don’t think there’s another pub in Sydney that can hold a candle to the friend when it comes to the atmosphere. Feels like a proper pub with locals, it wouldn’t be out of place in a country town.

The burgers are awesome as well and the onion rings are bordering on perfection.

Jake at the Friend is much more than a burger joint in Jake Chalmers and much more than a pub in The Friend In Hand Hotel Glebe. It is a nostalgic trip to a retro pub museum ran by a cockatoo serving some of the better burgers in NSW with a side of beer. What more do you want?

Full review is now up on Spooning.

This is located on Cowper Street which is tucked behind the main strip of Glebe Point Road. We visited here as some foodie friends were here for the burger eating contest! Quite enthralling watching people consume so many burgers in a short period of time. There were hands and burgers flying everywhere. The winner had consumed 11 burgers in 5 minutes.

Order at the counter, make payment, and get a buzzer. It'll go off once your food is ready to be picked up. It is a Jake Chalmers menu.

Onto what we actually ate...there were a couple of specials that stood out. One was the Trump Mistress which had crispy buttermilk fried chicken with waffles, cheese, maple, tomato, and lettuce. An awesome combination, it was like eating chicken and waffles but in a burger. The other was the Trump Burger which consisted of double patty, nacho cheese corn chips, jalapeños, lettuce, and tomato. It was quite tasty as well but not as good as its other chicken special. Both were served with a side of chips.
The Next Rush
The grill masters of the Shire, Jake Chalmers have set up shop here and the locals are in for a treat!

This mega premium double patty on THE TRUMP, glued together with nacho cheese is as juicy as the restaurant vibe of eclectic decor wish mash. The crunch of the diorite and lettuce countered with the kick of jalapeño! Accompaniments of interest include the fiery CHICKEN NIBBLES and loaded TATTER TOTTS for that crunchy starch factor essential to any burger affair.

Depending which way you swey, if you’re a chicken nibbler - the Kim Chi Burger and Buffalo Chicken Breast Burger would work nicely with this.

TRUMP’S MISTRESS involves waffle layering and is a top contender for the recommended choice.

It’s location is midway down Cowper off the main strip and it’s the kind of establishment that not only carries the history of the town but provides a space for old school community socializing. The choice of ornamental furnishings are so abstract and imaginative creating a unique atmosphere as a watering hole, sports venue and entertainment space.

Just go here to drink, don't bother ordering food as you will just be disappointed. Chow mein was bland. Chicken schnitzel was ordinary. I can make a better one myself at home. I give this place a 2 as they have a resident cockatoo George which is pretty cool

“More a museum than a pub” is how Friend in Hand, a charming Art-Deco hotel, describes itself. And it’s true; memorabilia fill the place, photographs, surf skis, model planes even a bunting made up of currency notes from around the world.

Recently the folks at Darley Street Bistro, a family run business, has taken over the kitchen. And it’s a delicious partnership. This bistro menu is filled with burger choices including pulled pork, KFC chicken and American double beef burger. Bangers and mash, lamb pie are there for the traditionalists.

New kitchen staff so food is delicious now & very well priced. Only had the American burger yet it was tasty and filling. My friends had the steak & they said it was really good too. If you thought it was bad before, please give this place a another chance.
Feeder's Digest
A real life cockatoo on arrival, working model train set running up above, more stuff on the walls than you can poke a stick at and a genuinely great place for a drink and a feed.

Lameballs. The food used to be great & I loved coming here for lunch but since the change in Kitchen it’s been bad ever since. The food is tasteless and apparently the chef doesn’t know what aioli is & feels the need to yell at you telling you it’s the same thing as mayonnaise. Douche

The main male manager is so friendly and makes you feel so welcome! It's a fun little place, always something to look at on the wall and the comedy night is good fun!
