I definitely recommend coming here if you’re into delicious, fresh and authentic Japanese food. We ordered the ten piece sushi special which had a nice variety of seafood. I loved the scallop one the most. The raw fish was fresh, yum and aesthetically pleasing.
Being a huge sushi fan, I decided to try this place on my last business visit to Sydney. This ppace has all the happy vibes, and I instantly felt that the food will be good here.
Their tuna maki rolls turned out to be so good, I ended up ordering one more plate. Could really taste the freshness of the fish. Would love to be back here for sure.
Hidden inside Chifley Tower. Authetic Japanese food. The sushi rice is good here. Thoroughly enjoyed the 10 piece sushi set. Will be back to try their degustataion. Atmosphere is quite casusal. Tables are on the larger side and my seat was stained. Little let down with interiors.
One of my favourite places in Sydney for good Japanese food. Food is fresh and I love their hot dishes. And I always save space for their homemade ice cream/sorbets!
Sushi and sashimi were so fresh. i usually don’t enjoy chicken karaage but theirs was so tasty and juicy!!! Beef was really tasty too. Only let down was the lukewarm red bean dessert which was too sweet.
I have to give 5 stars to this Japanese restaurant, the sashimi is very fresh and with great taste, the special scampi with cheese is the best I’ve ever had, the entrees are extremely wonderful, I was extremely satisfied. but I have to say that the main dishes(flounder fish and duck breast) disappointed me a lot, the fish is fried unexpectedly and is very normal; the duck breast is also just so so. And with respect to the dessert, we ordered an assorted dessert, which includes 4 kinds of small-size desserts. And the matcha cake looks and tastes terrible, like a cheap cake which is on sale. But other 3 are ok. Overall, the starter is worthy enough!
Azuma is an authentic Japanese restaurant located at Sydney CBD. They offer a la carte menu as well as omakese degustation. I tried the later and was impressed by the fresh ingredients and selection of delicious courses.
Beautiful Japanese food. We had waygu beef, duck and sashimi. So fresh and delish. The desserts are great here as well. Service is good. There are private dining rooms you can book as well. The decor is lovely and you are greeted with a smile. The food is excellent.. I would definitely go back.
Dined here in early August 2018. What can I say? It's just superb.
The best seat in the house is undoubtably at the sushi counter, especially if you wish to seek the sushi master's recommendations of the best fish of the day. If you can't decide, just leave it up to the chef ("omakase").
A wide variety of sushi -- with both a traditional and creative flair -- and difficult to get fish are often on the menu in season (such as really good cuts of toro - tuna belly). Everything is prepared with great skill and passion. Service is impeccable.
Still Sydney's best Japanese restaurant, by far!
Pretty good place for some high quality japanese seafood and some good sake. Overall food was great and the restaurant setting was nice and modern.
The only reason I would not give it a 5 is that the restaurant itself has quite a standard menu and for the high price, you'd expect something a bit more.
Would still come for high quality sashimi though!
I found this place via google when I search “Best Japanese in Sydney” and well and behold I was not disappointed!
By far this is now become my favourite Japanese restaurant, I’ll start with the service - super friendly and professional, waiters explained dishes we did not know. Very attentive
We ordered 5 dishes Assorted Sashimi - my partner thinks that was some the best Salmon he’s ever had. Then we had the assorted sushi which and I also ordered 2 pcs of Toro (Tuna Belly) this made my night. It was sooo fatty, it melted in your mouth almost if you were to have a really fatty piece of Wagyu but this was raw fish! We also had Karaage Chicken (5-6 bites size pieces), every piece was juicy and not dry whatsoever. Lastly we ordered the Wagyu steak, this was also very nice it was accompanied with some roast potatoes and a garlic and soy reduction sauce my partner think it tasted like hoi sin sauce. Don’t get me wrong it was still great just in comparison to the other dishes it didn’t stand out as much
The meal was a decent price mid range, including 4 drinks. The ambience is also something that stood out for me. It wasn’t too crowded and I didn’t have to scream my whole conversation all night which I loved
I can’t wait to go back and try the Personalised Omakase menu and sit in front of the chef!
Tried the seven course omakase for $110 pp. This was my first omakase experience and it exceeded my expectations, every single dish blew me away. I have to point out the 'selection of unique sashimi' which offered quality sashimi that melted in your mouth. Service was fantastic, our waiter/waitress would inform us of the dish name and give us a brief description after serving it to us. Didnt interact much with the sushi chef, there seemed to be a language barrier but that didnt bother us at all. Would 110% come here again :)
Forget taking pictures....
The service is good but some of them cannot speak proper English. Anyway, that doesn’t matter, I cannot speak proper English sometimes as well... lol
Cozy and lovely room with Japanese wine, you will feel you are really in Japan. One month ago, I basically forgot about the food already.
But the atmosphere is still in my mind.

Azuma is 1 of the few jap places i luv for its consistency, service n peaceful ambience (though i have never come during lunch, always weekday dinner). Sometimes after a hectic or an unusually stressful weekday, azuma becomes my oasis during dinner where i’d go w their excellent miso grilled cod chawan mushi daikon salad or mixed radish. Look out for their ‘specials’ of the day while you are there. No, the specials do not mean cheap, they are items which do not appear on the menu.
I hope they continue to uphold the values that have kept them in biz for more than 2 decades.
I hadn't had Japanese food for ages so this was a real treat.
The atmosphere is lovely with the Japanese feel. The only let down were that the menus were out dated and pretty tacky.
The food was amazing and really well presented. The sashimi was fresh and delicate which just melted in your mouth. The salmon belly and kingfish nigiri was delicious. The egg custard in the Chawan Mushi was soft and delicate but warning it was really hot.
The non seafood dishes were just as good as well. We got the grilled teriyaki Wagyu and grilled duck breast. Both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted as good as they looked.
Suggest getting the tasting of sake as all three were not harsh as ones I've tasted in the past.
Dessert was nice but I think my favourite was definitely the sashimi.
Very quite amibience. I tried quite a few diffeeent dishes.
I have to say the oysters were out of this world I can’t explain how fresh they were.
I ordered the duck, sashimi and beef tataki one word WOW
Another restaurant to add to your list.
Very lovely waitresses aswell. Great service
Food was very good and came out quickly. Our favourite was grilled duck. The small piece of wagyu beef in our green soba noodles melted in our mouth - so any wagyu beef items on menu should also be good. Seaweed salad is light and has a nice mix of different seaweed, sprouts and leaves. Mixed sashimi and beef tetaki were good too but fairly standard. Ambience is fairly simple for such an expensive restaurant, but that's typical Japanese. Each dish was brought out as a separate course which made for a nice long dining experience. Let down was waitress not being able to recommend to us the star dishes or explain what is special about the 'unique nigiri'.
Short review. Strange location when approached in the evening- Chifley Plaza in Sydney is deserted, looks like a mall all glass and tiles and escalators. Decor of restaurant matches the plaza. However the service is very good, the sashimi is excellent as were the eel and scallop nigiri. They offer many meat and tempura dishes but we just had the seafood based offerings and all were superb.
A side note for budding magicians: Beer in thick large mugs with glass walls so thick the actual beer volume is around 150ml! But the large mug gives you the impression of plenty. Quite the illusion.
visit here for dinner with family on Friday night . Reservation is recommended. The restaurant has private dinning rooms and it is great for cooperate catchup and special occasions. ordered Mediterranean bluefin tuna sashimi. the best sashimi i have ever tryed. The restaurant has greater range of sake.
Food:
1. Agedashi tofu: not bad, quite fluffy and sauce is right
2. Sashimi assorted platter: SUPER FRESH! It has been the best sashimi I have ever eaten.
3. Teriyaki beef: alright tasty because beef wasn't soft enough and it was really pricey.
4. Grilled salmon belly and kingfish nigiri: REALLY SWEET and FRESH! Worth trying!
5. Special: grilled kingfish - not great
6. Hand rolls: average, not worth the price.
7. Green tea cake roll: it came with green tea ice cream which was very nice (very green tea). Cake was not what I expected because it was vanilla cake with green tea cream instead of the whole thing as green tea flavored.
8. Green Tea: good in terms of the flavor.
Summary: must get sashimi and nigiri sushi but not much of the mains.
Service:
Quite good but a little clumsy in terms of missing two of the orders and I had to wait for my green tea for quite long. But they gave me the green tea for free after.
Atmosphere:
- Really nice seating
- Comfy for couples, small groups of friends/gatherings
Came here for a work lunch. Located in Chifley Tower, it is a gem of a place hidden amongst the construction that is going on.
Once inside it is quite a calm setting. The service is ever helpful and always polite.
The theme of the day seemed to be the set menu and everyone ordered a variety of their bentos. Everyone agreed how lovely the presentation was and really liked the flavours and taste of their meals. I went with the Teriyaki Beef Bento. It came with a plate of nicely grilled steak covered in a sticky teriyaki sauce, fried onions, and rocket. There were sides of rice, miso soup, tempura, sashimi, and a couple of grapes! All went well together. It is on the pricy side but is an upmarket experience compared to your usual Japanese fare.
My favourite Japanese restaurant in Sydney! Definitely a winner! The attention to detail, freshness and great staff alway make this a pit stop for me when I'm in Sydney ⭐️
Had a good dinner here, friendly service and great sake. Sashimi was well prepared and fresh as well, was lucky enough to order the premium Toro while it was in stock.
A nice place to take the clients out for lunch. Private rooms for 5+ guest. Well rounded Sashimi - prep like any local joint in Japan. Deliciously flavoured and paired with best ingredients!
Difficult to find restaurant inside a shopping arcade. Solid Japanese food (the chicken teriyaki as well as the eggplant were excellent) but the portion sizes were tiny and also very expensive for what you get.
Great food and service. Staff were very friendly. Authentic Japanese experience. We sat at the sushi bar was a great date spot. Extensive ala carte menu Enjoy!
Came here for a work lunch break. I got the azuma bento box and although quite pricey it was tasty and well presented and came with miso soup. The scallop was very tasty (I wasn't sure if the pink salt underneath the shell was there for taste or for presentation). The Wagyu beef had a good flavour to it and the sashimi was very fresh. The tempura was a tiny bit disappointing though as the batter was soft and slightly thick (although it might have been that I left it too long before eating).
We also got the assorted desserts - the wine jelly was very refreshing and the green tea cake was nice. The cremebrulee and choc mousse cake had great flavour.
Raspberry kirikabu is a delightfully soft sponge cake drizzled with raspberry coulis, kinoko is chocolate soil and mango aisu is mango sorbet shaped into an adorable peach. Zen Garden Bento - matcha mousse, mikan cake, hoshi mango, chilli and soy arare dipped in chocolate . Mikan cake consists of orange with syrup and zest. The hoshi mango, is dried and the chilli soy arare is a rice cracker. Both have been coated in a thin layer of dark chocolate. The matcha mousse has two layers, one of strong matcha and the other of vanilla cream.
The experience I had at Azuma was a complete treat. I brought an aunt from Singapore who was very, very impressed - we have all vowed to come back for sure! Every dish we had was deliciously outstanding. The accompanying service was professional and attentive without being intrusive. The setting and atmosphere of the restaurant made me feel like I was dining in Tokyo (with all the Blue Note jazz albums playing).
We started with oysters covered in a subtle ponzu and salmon roe dressing which really got the appetite going. A small bowl of scampi miso soup has spoilt me for any other miso soup forever. And wow, the sashimi! I don't think I've had sashimi this fresh, rich and deep with flavour outside of Japan. What is the secret source of such fresh fish? Only Mr Azuma knows. :-)
The sushi platter was outstanding and the mixed seafood salad extremely refreshing for the palate. Tempura was beautifully light and crispy -- and the unique green tea, curry and pepper salts that come with it take the tempura to a new level of flavourful fun. Desserts were artfully presented and absolutely delicious without being overpoweringly sweet and rich. A great way to finish the meal.
My only qualm with the meal was the dengaku eggplant - the miso sauce was a little on the sweet side. Still tasty but the high sugar level put it out of balance for me. Putting aside this small issue I'll definitely be back and bringing friends again soon. A wonderful experience. Recommended.
Really good food and highly recommend this place, one of my fave Jap places in Sydney. Favourite items off the menu are sushi (any and all) and tempura. The prices here are very decent for sushi and tempura.
Review of their Let's Do Dessert for Good Food Month 2014. Was it worth it this year for $20? Experience-wise, yes. The excitement of being able to tastes different items and that plum sorbet (I keep thinking about it!!) was worth it. However if you;re wondering in terms of the overall taste, no, not really. Even though the plum sorbet was really, really good it is only a small part of the bento and there weren’t enough really good elements to say it was worth it.
As I practically licked the conserve off the plate, it became apparent that innovation is abound at Azuma. Substituting the tired and often boorish finger sandwiches for sushi was clever, while basing the sweets on the French rather than the English was sheer genius, as it was familiar yet different. But for all that inventiveness, high-tea was never in need of a reform and it feels like this was solving a problem Sydney never raised an issue with. Like Japan’s Lost Decade, Azuma’s closure of its branches and renovation of its Chifley plaza restaurant mirrors the Japanese effort to jumpstart its economy. Adding high-tea but only offering it on weekdays, seems to reinforce that they are yet to understand what Sydney wants from it.
High tea at Azuma was a lovely experience and I truly enjoyed their offerings. The Japanese elements sets it apart from your typical high tea services and I hope to try the Tokyo high tea set next time. Definitely visit this place if you want to enjoy a quaint but unique high tea with great service.
I personally thought that the spicy salmon sushi roll, champagne jelly fruit salad and the rolled green tea cake gave Azuma’s high tea a good twist.

Soft shell crab sushi Assorted skewers - the wagyu skewers were particularly mouth watering! Spicy sushi - Hot hot hot! Azuma Ramen- home-made egg noodles in mildly spiced pork and sesame miso soup . Soft-shell crab Tempura Spicy gyoza- not as hot as the spicy sushi. Dessert time! Sugar hits $20 after 9pm- includes the restaurant specialty dessert with brown brothers dessert wine Kushiyaki bar and grill - East meets West We got to choose between the 2010 Orange muscat & flora or green
At Azuma, the food was very good and the service on that night, perfect.
Every year the Sugar Hit I look forward to most is Azuma’s East meets West desserts so I was absolutely delighted to be invited to the preview tasting held at Azuma, Chifley Plaza.

We all have idiosyncrasies about things. One of mine is that I prefer to go to what I call 'stand alone' restaurants and shops. You know the sort - where you can park outside the restaurant, and enter straight into it. So I was a little predisposed to not

Had omakase menu and some ootoro dishes. Very fancy deco on their food. Let's say the Yoshii at rocks is traditional Japanese food, Azuma is more like fusion style.
Fine and delicious Japanese cuisine. Azuma takes me back to Tokyo with its authentic selection of nigiri and small plates. I also tried the smooth chawan mushi, beef tataki with ponzu and the delicious tempura soba. The broth of the soba was very tasty. It is not cheap but worth every penny to savour such fine cuisine. I always ensure to order sake with my japanese meal and they have a wide selection to choose from. Booking is essential.
Love the Japanese high tea concept.
The only place I would go for Japanese! Best and favorite restaurant!
Yes !. Oh Azuma! Delectable, delicious, fantastic service and wonderful, authentic cuisine. What else can I ask for? I am a Major Fan of this place and we come regularly. Not as easy on the hip pocket but very worth it if you can afford it, IMO. Great place - highly recommended.
Amazing!. I am obsessed with the food at Azuma. The sashimi is incredibly fresh and the service is impeccable. I love the deep fried flounder with braised vegetables, the tempura scallop hand rolls and the green tea roll cake with green tea ice cream.
Sit with the Sushi chef!. Have been there for five time. Best experience was eating at the sushi bar where the sushi chef were telling us stories while making us the most delicate and delicious sushi and sashimi dishes. Unforgettable fun night that was. However, for my later visits, the set menu was not as impressive as the last experience, for there were simply too much food, too expensive and too exhausted in the end. You had to make efforts to drag ur body out of the restaurant.
Just delightful. Elegant, understated, but not strained or stuffy. Food is outstanding. Ask for the teriyaki salmon - it's not on the menu, but it's their very best dish. Wagyu beef also outstanding, as is the tempura. Good wine list, and great green tea. Restaurant was full, great atmosphere, yet still able to hear each other (am I getting old?) just lovely.
Service is the best ever among all of JApanese restaurant in Syd Ive ever tried. I'm a fan of their food.
Authentic expensive Japanese restaurant (confirmed by a Japanese co-worker). Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly and welcoming waitresses. We were ushered to our seat and they were helpful in explaining the dishes to us. We also ordered YEBISU beer, which is apparently produced by Sapporo Brewery. Regardless, the beer was fantastic and I immediately ordered a second one after finishing the first. Food was amazing, presentation was excellent and staff were attentive to our needs. Highly recommended.
Took a client here for lunch in a private room. Very authentic Japanese fine dining experience and we ate a broad selection from the extensive menu. Service was fabulous and the food top notch.
Liked it!. Service is quick and efficient, which is particularly useful if you are given one hour to complete your lunch (i made a very late lunch booking). Had the wagyu sirlion with garlic soy sauce with steamed rice, and it was like biting into a little slice of heaven.... (or was i just deliriously hungry?)
Great service, very polite. Very traditional japenese style. Sushi was extremely fresh but some had hidden wasubi which was a surprise. Have to try sake taster set. Worth a try! Average meal price 30 - 40 dollars. Will be back!
