I used a Groupon (2ppl) for all you can eat hot pot & a boat full of sashimi and seafood with great presentation. I liked the wide variety from fried rice to sushi and of course the hot pot ingredients. Staff were friendly. Only thing i didn't like was the tongs used to grab food were put all in one container which mixed up with non meat and meat food. No food poisoning so far, but pretty good quality meat though!
I recently visit Umi Sushi Nabe in Haymarket which has recently launched their new Hot Pot menu. I am dining with a group and was surprised to see that there are individual hot pots! No sharing !!! Hurrah for me. I've never seen individual hot pots before and I am impressed. As you walk in, you can see the hot pot buffet area and I am seated to the back of the restaurant. There are lots of groups of people dining, drinking, chatting and enjoying their food. I order a nice glass of red wine while Mr Weekend Food Escapes enjoys a nice refreshing beer. The all you can eat hot pot buffet has a special at the moment of $23.80 pp at lunch (60 minute time limit) or $29.80 pp at dinner where there 90 minute limit.
I love this place, this is my first time to try there food. It is absolutely amazing, all the foods that I ordered was fresh and juicy. Will be back here again next time.
Umi Sushi & Bar in Haymarket was closed for a while due to renovation and I have to say I like it better following the renovation. I mean look at this sashimi platter, all of my favourite sashimi served at once. Will be back for sure!
(4.5 Stars) UMI SUSHI AND BAR is an exceptional all rounder Japanese venue that gave us the best of the best of a taste experience. It was my second best Japanese dining experience of 2018 just behind a Chankonabe feast in the snow in Hokkaido earlier in the year. I love this place and will return.

Like it’s little sister Umi Sushi Express on George Street, flagship restaurant Umi Sushi & Bar echoes downtown Tokyo with its metal grates and bright red neon signs. With an extensive menu covering every kind of sushi roll, nigiri and gunkan imaginable in addition to live seafood, yakitori, hot pot (including a delicious seafood soy milk udon with wagyu!) and udon. We sampled an epic sushi/sashimi boat which was incredibly fresh and thoughtfully prepared
Umi Sushi group was first established in 2006, and since then, the owners have expanded their restaurant into three stores and spent years perfecting the menu, to preserve delicate flavours of traditional sushi, whilst bringing innovation to the world of sushi. In 2017 their flagship store, Umi Sushi & Bar underwent a refurbishment and now provides entertainment and dining with the option of private rooms perfect for parties. Their menu includes premium expert crafted sushi and sashimi as well as wagyu and hot pot and a range of traditional and modern Japanese drinks.

We were lucky enough to be asked to join some our fellow foodies for a banquet of Japanese food at Umi Sushi in Haymarket. Umi Sushi have other locations in Darling Quarter and Town Hall. The Haymarket store is super big with a bar to sit at, a range of smaller tables and also some private rooms that also have karaoke. It is conviently close to central station and also the capitol theatre for those theatre lovers amongst us.
There are sushi bars where you come and eat tuna rolls or salmon sashimi; then there is Umi Sushi & Bar where you come and get blown away. At a recent tasting event, we were taken on a culinary journey that showcased some of the best Japanese cuisine on offer in Sydney. If asked to name our favourite Japanese dishes, our pick would be in the order of otoro (fatty tuna), miso cod, wagyu beef and grilled eel. We were mesmerised when they all appeared on one menu at Umi.
If you're thinking Umi Sushi sounds familiar than you've probably been to one of their location in Darling Quarter, Town Hall or Haymarket. We had a quick tour around their Haymarket location and saw live seafood in fish tanks, experienced chef's preparing sashimi, a gorgeous bar and a private dining room. 🍭Great selection of sushi and the sashimi were all pretty fresh. Ambiance was also great and the service very friendly and prompt. We were seated fairly quickly when the restaurant opened, booked it through Groupon. Only neg feedback is that the sushi rice was a little dry and can be improved. :)
I was impressed. Dont understand why it got low reviews from some people. Came here using a groupon voucher for $25 and its smart of them to have a guy front of house who has an excellent command of english. At first i just had the sushi plates but 10 mins later, i noticed there was other food to eat. Like dur, the voucher did say hot food buffet, i totally did not read that part.
Chose the salmon sashimi from the a la carte menu, and when it came out, it was huge! Nice presentation, huge thick slices of sashimi and came out in record time. All the sushi were good, nice rice and quality ingredients. The hot food buffet had a nice selection of deep fried goodies, salad, miso, dessert etc. Although i dont recommend the dessert.
What i was most amazed by is management and service. There was already alot of people, say about 20 once they opened at 1130, and we were all accommodated adequately.
Superb! Happy to come again and pay the usual price!
The sashimi was so fresh here and the they had such a variety of food. My favorite dish was the truffle cabbage and the mentaiko egg roll, its a must have. The staff are very friendly and there is no long wait for the food. This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. Good pricing for excellent service and quality food.
We ordered 2 lunch sets, a sushi roll and took some plates off the sushi train. The fish was very fresh and they were very generous with the serving. We really liked the scallop and kingfish roll. The udon lunch set was tasty. All foods taste authentic, and was not too expensive.
Before I thought this is just a normal Japanese restaurant only has the lobby area, but I was wrong. The have closed rooms and you can enjoy the ‘secret talk’ with your friends.
Wagyu beef hot pot is amazing! I love it. The sashimi is 👍. Don’t miss it. Oh, they have so many cute tea cups and they allow you choose the one you like. 😊😉
For dinner service, this is not a place for bargain Japanese food, but a place for fresh seafood and great service. We ordered some fresh oysters, sushi rolls and udon. All delicious and fresh. Friendly and promot service, a great place for a special occasion.
Umi@central station has improved a lot since my last visit in 2015. Both of their price and quality has increased. Ingredients are fresh and well treated. The rice has a good balance of flavour, not too sour, not too sweet. Just I personally would prefer it to be a little less sticky. Despite their sashimi and their sushi being pretty high quality, their dishes are quite average. Drinks are good. Just order sushi, sashimi and drinks here.
I haven't been to the restaurant for a long time maybe for 1-2 years, but when I came back I thought it was a completely new restaurant because they renovated it. It no longer has the fish tanks or even the sushi train, but have upgraded and now looks more like a high class fine dining restaurant. (It had some red neon lighting up on the ceiling so half the restaurant was in red light which was bit hard to see if you were at the tables right under it). It even has a section which is a designated bar and even karaoke rooms (where you can also still order food to the room). Because they removed the sushi train, you now order through an iPad menu system and they serve to your table. Overall the food was still delicious but the main downside to it was very limited choices of variety from the menu. There was more on the drinks menu than the actual choice of food. There new items such as pork belly/braised pork belly (I don't remember that being there last time and also think they changed owners as well) some items I wanted to order e.g. Tempura and hand rolls but it wasn't on the menu? Sushi was really tasty and so was entrees. Favourite dish had to be the miso ox tongue from the entrees. Also felt they raised their prices a bit, some skewers and other dishes were a bit pricey and didn't think it was worth it. You would eat it so quickly and feel like you ate barely anything and not feel full afterwards. Also ordered a dessert which was the matcha Mille-feuille which was puff pastry with green tea cream and meringue on top. Never had a Mille-feuille before but felt that the pastry was really tough to chew. It wasn't that sweet and tasted like a green tea kit Kat hahahah. Also the staff was very friendly and was always there to assist us when needed something. Not sure if I would come again, left feeling spent more than I should for something that came in small portions and wasn't really filling.
This is actually, my all-time favourite sushi place. I am a little bias and there are arguably fresher sushi places...however, Umi Kaiten-Zushi always has innovative new tastes. I used to go here almost everyday when I was still studying. Admittedly I do think the quality and size of the sushi has dropped slightly, but the effort to make new tastes hasn't. The decor is unlike any other in the CBD. A large fish tank with the words UMI inside situates itself in the middle with the sushi train surrounding it. Large chairs where you can store your bags underneath are used. (Although recently they replaced some of these with stools, I'm not sure why). The staff are all very friendly, quick to respond and food comes out in fair time. The chefs are always inventing new flavours and on some days in winter they display a display of a cutting of a whole blue fin tuna. The specials menu always changes and now that there are 2 other branches in the CBD, each one displays specials unique to the store. I love this place and recommend it to anyone.
I visited this place because it was on the Zomato Asia on Your Doorstep Food Tour and the place was buzzing. The place was full and the sushi train was packed with delicious dishes. We were seated at the cosy booths on the side and given amazing sushi platters. The food here is really fresh and so dam tasty. I highly recommend.
The Very Hungry Katerpilla
+3.5
I was lucky enough to sample a variety of their sushi, sashimi and aburi nigiri as part of a Zomato food tour - Asia on your Doorstep recently, and was quite impressed by the quality of the produce.
The sashimi boat had the usual favourites of salmon, tuna, kingfish, scallops etc and also the fancier scampi and uni (so sweet), and one that I don't see people order much - surf clam.
It also had an adorable tiny squid roll - squid as the outer layer and inside was nori and cucumber. Yum!
We even got to have a special not on the menu item that the chef whipped up for us. It had prawns and avocado inside, topped with scallop, avocado, mango, fish roe and dill.
Tasted refreshing and summery!
I will definitely come back to try more sushi, and also check out the seasonal specials they have on!
Our second stop on the Zomato Asia on Your Doorstep Food Tour was Umi Kaiten-Zushi. Our hosts brought out a giant, boat shaped platter of different sushi varieties, and we sampled some of each. It was so fresh and very beautifully presented, and we enjoyed the mini squid roll and salmon sashimi the most! The slightly tangy and spicy kick to some of the rolls added an intriguing element, and we were very impressed with the variety and creativity of the flavours too.
Best sushi train I've been to!! Everything is so fresh and tasty and the service is quick and responsive. I wish I had a bigger stomach to eat try everything. Pricing is a little on the dearer side but you really do get what you pay for.
A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for a quick snack or full course meal. Umi's is a Sydney sider's go-to for a taste of sushi, hand wraps & delectable desserts...
If you've eaten at enough sushi trains as I have, you've seen plenty of sushi "chefs" whose training seems to consist of a couple of lessons out the back on job application day and then they're in. Not so here where the chefs are older and wiser - sat right in front of them and watched them whip up items really quickly but they were quality made. Got lured in here because they had a $1 salmon special per piece on Monday nights. They have a range of other specials here. Ordered the egg salad gunkan which is my litmus test so tick. Had a couple of other dishes and I feel the quality is higher than the places offering every sushi dish for $3 or less. Finished off with the karaage which took a while to come out but taste was good and the mayo was a different from the standard kewpie but still good.
One of the chefs convinced me to order the oo-toro and I was glad I did! Those who haven't tried it should; it's a revelation to the taste buds...
In my experience, sushi train has always been a very rushed affair but dinner at Umi is so far from what I know.
I don’t really like sushi trains, so going here was a risk. The cost of getting a good filling and the overabundance of boring/tasteless dishes always turned me off. But this place was fantastic. It’s such an unassuming location (across the road from the
Affordable and excellent foods..loving it
Value and lovely food. Went here end of November 2011 after looking for a cheap, friendly eat for my first night in Sydney. Stumbled across this place hidden in the laneways, and loved both the atmosphere, the food, and a big highlight was watching the chefs create new dishes. $20-$25 will get you 7-8 dishes of the lower price plates but you still get some interesting combinations.
Would happily go back.
Flashy venue and fantastically fresh sushi. This place is unique in that it has a huge and stunning fish tank in the centre of the sushi train. It is a big cut above the average sushi joint in terms of quality and variety. They offer good value lunch sets as well where you can select a hot dish (teriyaki chicken, fish, tofu, etc) that is served with rice, salad and miso, plus you get to select 2 plates of sushi for $13 - 16. It rivals Makoto for the best sushi train in Sydney in my view.
Best Sushi in Sydney. I have been dining at Umi Kaiten-Zushi for five years and have never been disappointed. The range of sushi available is endless and even features yummy twists on traditional dishes including fried lotus sushi topped with a generous doloup of kewpie and pumpkin creme caramel for desert. Service is always fast and friendly. I cannot think of a negative thing to say about this kaiten sushi.
Great quick Japanese before seeing a show at the Capitol Theatre
Great atmosphere, brilliant choice range, and such good udon!! Going there again...
Umi is a fantastic sushi train restaurant with a trendy, modern atmosphere. We love the fish tank down the centre of the train! The sushi varieties are a little bit fancier than what you typically get at other sushi trains and the seafood is always fresh putting it a cut above the rest. You may pay slightly more than elsewhere but it's worth it because you're also getting better quality sushi. Don't forget to try the soft shell crab and duck handrolls from the menu.
A great sushi place that has become my default go-to location in moments of indecisiveness. Freshly made sushi, nice ambience and mostly friendly staff makes this a winner.
This is by far the best sushi train restaurant in Sydney (if not Australia). The Service was fantastic, ambiance was nice but more importantly the sushi was super fresh and yummy! Highly recommended..
