I was just passing by and was looking for some breakfast. This place was chosen purely at random but now I know to come straight here. I was made welcome straight away, as if I was expected and a regular. When I ordered breakfast, they queried if that is really what I wanted and made an excellent suggestion of their specialities. I was not disappointed, the food was great, as too was the coffee but most of all I enjoyed the atmosphere and banter shared by everyone in the place.
They say they have the best scrambled egg roll in Sydney and I have to agree!
w/ Chipotle mayo, Jack cheese on Brioche.
I recommend it to everyone, it's that good.
This place is lovely, food and coffee...faultless. Extensive menu to choose from, friendly staff and itās split over more than one level including an outside court yard. Do visit!!!
The food was absolutely amazing, the people were fantastic, the atmosphere was beautiful and I would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back!
Excellent food and friendly service. The avocado on sourdough toast with a touch of fresh lemon is super delicious! Really enjoyed our first visit yesterday.
absolutely amazing food, atmosphere & people. Couldn't recommend enough!
LOVE The Upside! This is our Saturday brekky go-to. Coffee is fantastic and the breakfast menu items are delicious! Try the scrambled egg roll, or get the brekky wrap with the hot chipotle sauce - yum! Service + music is also awesome - we look forward to having a chat to Brian whenever we're in!
My go to brekkie place to start the week right and then end the week with awesome burgers.
SO SO SO SOOOOOOOOOOOO Good! The amazing food and coffee is only overshadowed by wonderful staff.
I recommend this site to everyone, the service and the coffee has been impressive!!
Such a great place to hang out! Chilled, good food and drinks; Brian is great, super down to earth and an excellent barista (Y)
Just a couple of great guys making great food & coffee, with awesome music to match!
Got a lot of love for you guys, Brian & Shane ļæ½
The Bomb! Friendly and attentive staff, food is great and the coffee is even better. My favorite coffee in Sydney! Head down to the courtyard in Summer it's so relaxing. Keep up the good work guys.
Just popped in this morning after missing the shopfront last three mornings. Sensational B+E rolls with that special hot sauce. Your coffee game is strong too. Iāll be back for sure!!

God himself couldn't do a better job with the service and the food there. 10/10 would eat there again.
Best burger ever!!! So juicy!! Staff are so friendly and welcoming. Great set up specially the courtyard area. Will definitely be backļæ½ļæ½ļæ½
Cool place for lunch. Great burgers & chips at amazing prices (14.5$ for the both). Nice seating options inside and outside. Check out my video review on my profile.
Service is friendly and came with smile š
Love the coffee, it was take away piccolo.
Light roasted Coffee bean coffee in my opinion powering this cafe and I donāt mind at all, even though I prefer more to medium dark roasted coffee beans.
Anyhow, temperature was perfect and a very pleasant cup of coffee to drink.
Flew back to Sydney this morning from Japan the first thing before work is to get a lovely coffee and burger at The Upside CafƩ, eventually just realised they are closing few days for facelift cant wait to see them reopen with new look, new menu and new drinks.
Fantastic value! We spend 20 bucks for me and Xihuahua š¶. They have really tasty bread and everything was done right! Highly recommend their breaky burger deal with coffee, mushroom melt. They even do crispy bacon! Yes crispy bacon is finally found in Australia! The coffee is very mellow and has a special fruity hint, nice one!
Secret: The cafe us much bigger than meets the eye with many secret lobbies.
Amazing burgers. Lovely staff. Lovely garden. Try their Big boss burger. Yummm.... Strong coffee with smooth and chocolate ending. Lovely place to go and grab lunch.
Popped by this cute cafe for my coffee fix during lunch break with my colleagues. I loved my iced latte and service was great. I will definitely be visiting more often!
Loved this place! Stopped by early Saturday for some breakfast - Itās small but cozy and the service was very friendly with smiles all round.
I had a soy latte and the vegan banana bread which came quickly and of good quality.
Noticed they also had vegan caramel slice so Iāll be back to try it!
Excellent flat white with almond milk! And only cost $4.5 which is less than average price.
Love it! Small but cozy diner. Chilly outside but warm inside. Quite quiet in the early morning. Gonna try others on the menu in the future.
Pros:
- great space to study, has WiFi and powerpoint
- great coffee, great snacks
- service is friendly, cheeky and attentive
- huge toilet space available
- many little rooms to study or chill in
Cons:
-none
Arrived out of the blue about 8am Saturday morning. Host was great. Enjoyed the coffee, the breakfast burger of jack cheese, bacon, egg and special spicy sauce was very nice
Quaint little cafe with a stunning little outdoor courtyard. Friendly staff with good coffee! Food was good and they were happy to allow for minor menu alterations. Will definitely be back. āŗ
Came here for lunch the other day and had a decent meal. The garden area our the back is gorgeous too, and the service is super friendly.
I had the chicken and avocado dressing. The chicken was flavoured nicely and cooked well. The avocado was a little scarce though, and they were quite heavy on the boring leafy green stuff. Thankfully the dressing was quite punchy and yummy, so it added another great dimension to the salad.
I also had a sunrise smoothie, which was amazing. It had a prefect mix between fruit and veg so you felt healthy while still being sweet and flavoursome.
Overall, upside provides for a relaxed, delicious and reasonably healthy meal. I'll be back.
Arrived here on a colleague's recommendation. he crowned this place the "best burger place in the city". I said - bring it on. And then I took a month before I went here.Ā
Loved it. Might be back for the same again.Ā
SMOKY (I am guessing) was the burger that I ordered. Great filling with each layer able to hold on its own whenever we take a bite. Go for it. My mates said, that even the Other burgers that they ordered were great. So I am guessing that, the taste of any burger you order here is going to be great.Ā
Great staff and nice casual setup. Decently priced (16$ for the burger)
Been to this cafe for some of my meetings before and just love their vibe. The different sections of the cafe dining areas are great. Staff are friendly and just very chill, which helps your to actually relax and enjoy some good conversations and yummy food with friends! Coffee is great and their burger is very nice too! Love their chilli mayo that comes with the chips on the side. Their chips are freshly fried but I think they are a little bit too greasy. So if you are a healthy eater you may need to ask if they can swap chips for salad for you.
Went venturing inner west the other day and stumbled across @theupsidecafe on Broadway for a spot of lunch.
Double Smoky: grilled beef, crispy bacon, jack cheddar, greens, smoky hot sauce and herb mayo š
Legit shock. Well rested, nicely cooked beef from a cafe! And a smoky BBQ sauce with a kick! Hell yeah. If i was a uni student I'd be smashing these guys daily.
We went out for a lunch break at work, and walked passed. We smelled the burgers and had to try one. OMG what a meal. The potatoes are delicious and the burger is in my top 5 best burgers I've ever tried. If you are a burger lover, this place is a must. The staff is very friendly too and most importantly, very attentive. Would definitely recommend.
Tip: If you eat at the front, you will smell like bbq all day and will have to wash your clothes right away.
Best burger ever.
Staff is friendly for starters. The environment is great, especially the courtyard at the back of the cafe. Great place to have a drink during the weekends there with some soft music. Will definitely recommend the burgers which unfortunately, they serve 'em during the weekdays until 3pm only. Johanna which will b the one making your coffee. She is great! 3 thumbs up if I have an extra.
After an extremely early morning wake up, I need some sustenance to start my day off with before I fall asleep standing up due to lack of sleep!
Having passed this cafe a few times I decided I needed to actually eat here. It is a smallish cafe in the front where they prepare the food and coffees, there is additional inside seating and a garden courtyard so should be able to nab a seat somewhere. They have freshly prepared breakfast items in the window to cater for the large amount of takeaways they seem to cater for (not that many people dining in today for breakfast). They are quick and efficient and super friendly. The chef took my order and seemed to be on double duties when the lady was making coffees or the other server was busy.
I ordered Bacon Benedict. He happily substituted the avocado with mushrooms. I also had a Chai Latte. A slight wait due to the large amount of takeaways they were getting, I was happy to see the delicious food in front of me. It tasted great together and the eggs were nicely poached and were nice and runny. The hollandaise sauce could've been slightly warmer but not much to fault. Overall I was pleased with the food and the really nice service.
The Upside Cafe! The name sounded strangely appealing, and I wanted to check it out!
The place was quite crowded, but luckily there was one table left, which I hurriedly occupied. The cafe has a nice retro feel, but considering the crowd, they really need to provide more seating.
I was served by a friendly waitress, who confirmed that the mushroom burger was the only vegetarian option available (among burgers). It arrived pretty quick, and was an attractive sight! It was served with chips and mayo sauce. The burger looked slightly small, but was quite filling! The chips were really good as well! The taste of the burger can still be improved (I found it a bit lacking in flavour), but it was still quite decent.
It cost me $15, which I felt was slightly expensive. But overall, a positive experience!
Food - 3.5/5
Service - 5/5
Ambiance - 4/5
Value for money - 3.5/5
Overall - 4/5
Brian is a legend, and chef Shane is a master. I have dreams about the chipotle chilly sauce smokey beef burger cheese meat bun cheese brioche. It cannot be stopped. Best coffee in chippendale as well, better than Toby's, yep.
Lunchtime salad and smoothies to die for. Friday evening for burger and beer. Good atmosphere and very friendly staff. Absolute winner in Ultimo!!!
What a find! Possibly the grooviest joint in town, great food and hot staff in a welcoming and fun environment. We were there on one of the first Friday night opens where we enjoyed scrummy spiced chicken burgers and a few beers whist sharing a laugh with the jovial and handsome proprietor. Will be back!
Brian and the guys down at this cafe are the best! The key for some one who shows up every morning at their doorstep, is consistency - Great coffee (Double roasters) and great service every time makes it a winning combination. The chef whips up some delish dishes & smoothies for brekkie or lunch. And in summer they have a nice little courtyard space at the back which becomes the perfect spot to catch some rays while having your lunch.
The Upside Cafe is an amazing little joint just one minute down Broadway from UTS. Their burgers are amazing, especially loving the Southern Fried Chicken Burger and the huge-cut chips! The cafe has indoor seating for those in a hurry or outdoor-seating back in the courtyard. Would definitely recommend for anyone in the area!
Located a stoneās throw away from UTS and Central Park, the Upside Cafe is a hub for students and everyone that works nearby. Specialising in breakfast, burgers and beers, the Upside Cafe tops it off by seating people in a gorgeous, little courtyard.
Really friendly staff and very willing to please. Menu mixes healthy with inner city treats and a thoughtful beer selection. So thumbs up for getting two out of three key elements right. Major downfall is the decor - it's trying to be hip on a meagre budget so just needs some finessing. Would do a better business in a lane way/side street or up near central.
Best cafe I have found around Ultimo for my morning coffee. The smokey beef burger is as amazing as it sounds and the staff are excellent. Highly recommend
Visited on a early Monday - the coffee shop itself was a bit quiet. A couple of takeaways in an hour duration when I was there. We ordered two coffees and both were delicious. The iced latte tastes nutty with milk based espresso while the cold drip has a fresh sour fruity flavour. The barista was quick, friendly and accommodating. The space was decorated modern, I would say there are many very instagrammable photo spots. Also bought a bag of their coffee for my home brew filter because I loved the taste of my cold drip. $18 for 250g bag coffee.
Open fro take away only, during this second lockdown.
Very quite when I visited, bought afternoon piccolo for my self.
Coffee is not bad at all, decor was good too, even I would say not bad for Instagram pictureš
Coming from Taipei where proper light roasted single origin hand pour is THE THING I was really missing that distinct notes and aroma from a properly brewed hand pour coffee. Not only are their roasted beans stunning but Tim also just made the most amazing hand pour coffee with the exact notes thatās supposed to be: chocolate, guava and floral. I finally got my fix of a proper hand poured coffee in Sydney!
Gorgeous little find and a local gem. Make sure you pop downstairs to eat in the beautiful garden out the back. Great food, excellent burgers on the menu, ace beans and the staff are top notch too!
Really lovely atmosphere, which for the area is a nice surprise. There is a number of spots to sit, inside, outside, couches, bar stools, lots of options.
Burger loves would be excited. I'm not a burger person so had a wrap which had good ingredients but I didn't realise it came toasted & I'm not a massive fan of cooked lettuce lol. There was also a surprise chilli kick. I look forward to ordering other items from the menu I.e. The salads sound good!
Food came quickly, which is great as I only get a short lunch break. Price is medium - wrap was $14.50 (see menu in my photographs) Finally great to see there isn't a surcharge for using your Credit/Debit Card!
The Upside CafƩ is open for X'mas & New Year day.
Don't let the entrance (or the front part) of this place fool you. It may look small, but go in, go through the back and you'll be met with a small and cozy beer garden. There's also other little rooms that fits a small number of people.
The Burgers are good. My fave breakfast burger is the Spicy BBQ Roll. The bacon is crispy, the egg gooey, the brioche bun nice and warm.... it's making my mouth water just describing the food.
I also like their take-away coffee cups. They have some words of wisdom written on them. It brightens my day when I read them.
