Review Seven Lanterns - Sylvania

Wendy
Had a great time here on a busy NYE. Ordered the 8 course degustation and enjoyed every dish. We were there for about 3hrs but there was usually an appropriate amount of time between each course. The head chef is a character and is mostly out with the diners serving and explaining the dishes which made for a fun experience.

Excellent service, delicious food and a great setting. The degustation menu with matching wines was quite an experience! Loved it all

We went to Seven Lanterns to celebrate a friend's birthday dinner. For starters we had Salmon with jalepenos and tuna carpacio. The starters were really delicious and we finished it up fast. For mains we had the beef rib hotpot, pork ribs, angry chicken (spicy chicken), wagyu steak and lamb cutlets. The food is very tasty and everyone enjoyed themselves. Chef was super friendly and was in the floor serving and chatting with us.

I really did not know what to expect when I walked in. But a small restaurants like that can be a great find when it is good. The prawns was nicely done, heavy smokey flavor went well with mayo. I wish there was more of it. The star of the dish will have to be the spicier version of the angry bird. The chef uses different kind of chillies to bring out the different character of the dish. ( I was later told that there were 3 types of chillies ) Not every often you get a good amount of heat with flavor. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere is great. I look forward to my next visit.

Amazing service and equalling amazing food. The combination of ingredients and flavours is just so good. The owner is charismatic, welcoming and funny. I cannot speak highly enough about this restaurant. We will be regulars here.

Food and service was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience (including my kids). We chose the 7 course degustation and loved every bite. The black ink calamari was very special too, my girls really enjoyed that dish. David is a wonderful host, super friendly, very passionate and made us feel at home. See you again soon.

Have dined before at their Sylvania location and was happy to see it here in Cronulla. David and his team are lovely and welcoming. The food is delicious, I can't pick a fave..the black ink calamari, bao buns, the tacos..yum as well as the sake sangria. Looking forward to dining here again.

Experienced a wonderful meal at seven lanterns Sylvania last night. Davidโ€™s attention to detail with the food and the extremely high quality of the cooking created a very special meal. David was a great host with a wicked sense of humour. Highly recommended.

The most exquisite restaurant I have ever had the privilege of attending!!! Service is second to none which pails into insignificance compared to the cuisine!!!!!

Really delicious food there and friendly staffs! Deserve to have a try! We love the calamari and prawns.

Unless you having the degustation, the food is very expensive for the portion provided, even comparing to other fine dining places in Sydney.

Went there for dinner with a friend. We had 9 course and 11 course. It's quiet place and the chef (or maybe the owner) came to say Hi :) Waiter service was just average. The food looks ok, taste not bad. Had soft shell crab, but i think it was pre cooked, not really fresh.. But their date cake was fabulous! I wish i could have 2.

Local favourite, one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney, great food and service. Have had the opportunity to go to many fine restaurants that offer degustation with a hefty price tag, Seven Lanterns scores high with me and a 1/3 of the price compared to others. Had my birthday here with 30 guests, all extremely happy and impressed - highly recommend

My hubble and I are regulars at Seven Lanterns making a regular pilgrimage from Alexandria for the unique Korean Japanese fusion. We inevitably go for the degustation so we can revisit all our favourites. David is always the perfect host - even setting up a table outside with us during the Summer so we can bring our dogs out with us. Highly recommended!

Hands down, the best meal I've ever eaten. My husband and I had the degustation menu and every dish was a delight and surprise. The service was excellent and the food was served at well timed intervals.
Sarah Irwin
An amazing dining experience! Would highly recommend the degustation, the food was superb! Service was great too with each meal timed perfectly

Had dins here with my better half. we went for the seven course degaustation menu and it was pretty good. the first course, a tuna tartare was the best I think. the prawn was a little disappointing. the beef rib was nice but could have done with a touch of chilli. every wine on the list is available by the glass which is great if you want to have a variety, especially with the Asian food.
all in all, would recommend to a friend.

ps. with some comments re the speed of the courses coming, we sat at 7pm and they were nicely paced. however, i did notice others who came in later had caught up to us.

Visited during mid week. Wasn't sure what to expect from previous reviews. Ordered the degustation which included 7 dishes for $70pp, these made up of smaller entrees with a main and dessert. Very impressed with food and service. Best dishes (IMHO): prawn, beef short ribs and the sticky date pudding. Was told that dishes can be swapped from the main menu. Can't wait to go back.

Would be perfect if the courses came out a tad slower to allow time to talk and enjoy the food and wine. Service was friendly and polite, though we are yet to receive the really great and personal service, that many have commented on. Great for a nice and relaxing dinner. Not overly romantic, but cosy. Portions are on the tiny side, so not for big eaters.

Extremely disappointing. Very disappointing, waste of time.
I booked a table for two and the owner made me feel very excited on the phone about coming in. The experience was not what we expected. On the phone the was told it was a special anniversary and a hard week as my father had passed and going out was not something I was even comfortable with. He assured me he would make it a great dinner and asked what wine we drink , and would have a great bottle waiting for us. We came at a earlier time as he suggested a large booking was coming in 45 mins later. We were put at a table in the middle of the room, no special wine, never met the owner. It was so noisy I just wanted to hurry up and get out. When one enter, one Deseret, two mains and wine is $150, that's the last thing you want to feel like getting the hell out. I weren't snooping upstairs to see what was up there and it was a whole floor of tables, including tables of two and we we're put down in wih noisy tables of four and six people. One couple even commented upstairs saying we should be upstairs it's so noisy down stairs! Exactly what I thought. So atmosphere was terrible. Food was nice but $19 entree of four bite size canapรฉs was a joke and $15 sticky date the size of a golf ball, a joke. The waiter was lovey and prompt, the only good review. Upset and as a local resident will be assuring others not yo waste their money or time.

Renowned for the 2013 'Gault et Millau' One Chef Hat Restaurant, sits a modern 'East meets West' Japanese Korean Mediterranean Restaurant cosied between a well lit strip of culinary wonders amongst the hustle and bustle of Princes Highway. The scene is set before you step into the culinary delight by an oriental inspired exterior dรฉcor.

A place of great hospitality and delish foods. LOve their degustation menu especially the Emperor's prawn and Bork Goroge!!

The food as aforementioned through this post, was excellent quality and it was obvious that David and his team go to great care to select fresh produce of a very high standard to make their wonderful dishes. Our fave dishes of the night were the salmon sushi roll and the imperial beef rib โ€“ two must trys!

Seven Lanterns is a modern Korean/Japanese restaurant which had won one hat in the 2013 Gault et Millau guide. It is a cosy restaurant which puts emphasis on the quality of the produce and flavours.

What a gem of a place!. Having just moved to Sylvania not too long ago my boyfriend and I decided to wander down the little strip of eateries that greet you upon coming off Tom Ugly bridge into the Shire..
I hadn't read reviews or been recommended anything but we didn't walk past Severn Lanterns! The quaint entrance pulled us in and from there we were hooked!
David the owner greeted us as if he'd known us for years and we sat at the Teppanyaki bar which suited us perfectly! Table space was limited as the place was packed but we were happy to be sitting close and personally I believe we got the best seat in the house - we were able to watch the chef prepare some of the dishes in front of us and he gave us some recommendations whilst selecting from the menu.

David was a delight - one thing I've noticed since moving from Melbourne to Sydney is that customer service and hospitality can be vastly different but David made me eat my words as he generously filled our wine glasses and made us feel like we were the stars of the night - however every time I looked around either him or his lovely wife were sitting at other diners tables making them feel exactly the same way!

And I haven't even started on the food yet! We had the Oysters, Beef Tataki, Pork Belly, Emperors Prawn & the Soft Shell Crab Roll. Servings we perfectly cooked and the oysters were that good we ordered them twice!

The evening was not a cheap night out but from the quality of food, wine (lots of wine) & service I was more than happy with the bill. Each time we've been there we have ordered select dishes but from what I've seen the degustation menu brings variety and value to the table.

Can't recommend this place highly enough - it brings food of quality, texture & interest to the dinner plates of the Shire and I hope you can enjoy it too!

I ate here on new years eve and it was fantastic. The food is perfect

FORGET THE NAYSAYERS! There are 3 qualities for restaurant foods - tasty, fast and cheap - but you can only pick any 2. 7 lanterns more then delivers on the first 2. The degustation was quite simply the best meal of my life and despite going on a saturday night service was prompt. Delicious meat that melts in your mouth, tantalising tasters...I honestly cannot pick the best part of this meal. Will be back everytime im in Sydney

I'm so excited to have found seven lanterns that I joined this site to write about it. We finally have a hatted Japanese restaurant (by Gault Millau) right here in the SHIRE! When I was in Europe I followed GM's guide religiously and never been disappointed so I bought the first Australian version and I found this place and went last night. Despite their one hat status the price was very reasonable - 7 course at $65 and the food was original and tasted sensational. I'm craving the pork belly even as I write. I always had to travel reluctantly over the bridge to join my friends for jap/Korean meal but not any more. We need more restaurants like seven lanterns to take us shire people seriously. Good on you seven lanterns. I'll be back for sure!

Nice food, but not value for money. Modern Asian restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Although the food was done well, it was nothing out of the ordinary and unfortunately it was nothing that you possibly couldn't get for half of the price elsewhere. Locally i understand that choices are limited, but I felt that after having to order 3 bowls of rice for 2 people meant that at $3 a bowl, it could've been more generous with portions. The service is lovely, however, i think the food needs to be slightly more special to justify paying those prices. We ordered a la carte and paid about $55 p person, and the popular option on the night seemed to be the $65 degustation. Oysters with a soy dressing was a lovely start to the meal, pork belly was nice and crispy (though maybe similar to what you'd get from the chinese shops), the rib stew was a sweet homely braise, and the atlantic salmon sushi was nice but not dissimilar to what you'd get at a sushi train for a lot less. So even though the food was lovely, i felt that the value wasn't there.

Hats off. To a great restaurant. Went here for my birthday and although not cheap. Everything is fresh and tasty. From the drinks to the atmosphere, I would highly recommend it and can't wait to go back but just waiting on a special occasion.

Yeah right. I strongly suspect the previous reviews were written by family members. They certainly couldn't be talking about the same rip off joint over by Tom Uglys bridge.
You'll save lots of money and have a full belly if you go somewhere else.
Two beers and three entrees, $82.00, no exaggeration.

Yeah I know the owner comes on and berates negative reviews but for $82.00, suck it up.

Great restaurant in the shire. We have only been to this place once but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. from being greeted to close the service was great, even the owner was active in service. The food equalled the service. We were the lasts ones to leave but that was not a problem for the staff. Will be back to Seven Lanterns again and again. Well done on providing a great restaurant for the Shire to enjoy

Seven Lanterns - Superb. The degustation menus offer such a fantastic range of innovative dishes and tastes with a unique, quirky, inexpensive and superbly tailored wine list. The flavours are to die for, resembling the superb innovative Quay and Bistro Moncur menus but at a fraction of the price. Head chef and owner is a superb example of how superb modern restaurants should be run - good fun place to eat with quality food.

Gem of a find. We stumbled on this gem and were very pleasantly pleased. The food was fantastic, well priced and creative. The service was impeccable and David the owner was a pure delight- it was like spending an evening as a dinner guest at his home. Loved the food, loved the decor, loved David

Seven Lanterns Degustation Review. I can't help but to love this restaurant. From the minute you walk through the door to the time you leave the vibe is sensational.
We had a group of 7 with some new diners and some existing with me to show and experience the wonderful asian fusion dishes.
Everyone decided on the 7 course Royal Degustation and at $50 why would you do anything different!

Yet again I find myself having to make a serious effort to find any flaws in the food. From the simple yet mouth watering salad to start all the way through to the King Prawn and Black Angus Beef there are no dissapointments.

This Restaurant is not pretentious, the food gives an almost fine dining feel without the pompousness usually associated with it. Simply put, its honest... From the food to the staff.

There is no silly food throwing here, what you get is appreciation for both the diners and the food that is presented. The warm and inviting staff matched with the owner "David" who is constantly on the floor is unmatched in most, if not any restaurants in Sydney.

So again we will return to this fantastic restaurant.
