We chose 1918 as the restaurant to have our last meal of 2018. They had a special menu on with four courses and a glass of bubbles for $95 pp. this lovely 100 year old cottage with pleasant gardens took on the 1920’s with staff dressing for the period.

The menu looked good with a range of canapés, selection of entrees, mains and desserts. Canapes were somewhat underwhelming with pork belly being quite dry and ceviche being quite bland. Moving into entrees though and most enjoyed their choice. I had the pressed lamb which came on a small wild rice salad.

I couldn’t say no to the 300g Sirloin which came with a garlic mash. They didn’t offer any other choice other than having this cooked medium rare which I thought quite odd even though this is normally how I have my steak anyway. I liked the dish but would have liked the option to have greens for the table as this dish seemed to be lacking a green element when presented. My steak had a sizeable chunk of fat on the side which didn’t present well either. Taste wise and enjoyable dish although the capsicum sauce was just a thin smear on the plate and did little for flavour. The duck breast was well rendered but not crispy and the salmon steak was the one dish that we wouldn’t have changed a thing on.

Desserts were good with mist opting for lemon tart.

Staff seemed stressed tonight. Our wonderfully dressed waiting staff member seemed to not be coping with the number of people dining and in particular the questions on food being asked of her by the table beside us. I guess it was a non standard menu but staff should still be able to explain the content.

Overall less than perfect but we still had a good night in a wonderful location. Would be interesting to compare to the regular menu as this New Year’s Eve limited menu didn’t give us the wows we were hoping for.

My partner would give it. 4.5 but for me it was a 3.
The fire was on which was lovely, a bit heated for those seated close by however on a cold and windy night it was a blessing.
No bread to start unless you paid for it.
Prawn and shaved scallop, pork belly entree ($22) was nice but very small with one prawn.
The paella (choice of veg, meat or seafood - I had seafood) is listed an an entree but you can get it as a main. My main came with one or two prawns, two muscles and various fish. It was not great value for money and tasted more like seafood risotto.
The lamb - rump and pressed shoulder - my partner loved this but as you can see from the pictures it was borderline raw. Each to their own; I'm aware lamb should be pink but you can make your own judgement.
Wines $14 a glass with a very standard pour.
Lovely service.

It has been some time since we have been here. Still just as beautiful as I remembered. The salmon on soba noodle salad was just beautiful. The asparagus salad was fantastic. The burnt broccoli salad such a surprise. The potato hash browns were fantastic. Such a lovely place with friendly staff and a great wine list.

The food here is remarkable. Steak, fish, kangaroo, desserts... they all have some quirky ingredients about them. They have wines and cocktails... all the perks. I enjoyed my kangaroo, a little bit too chargrilled on the outside but still rare and not too chewy. The quandong and onion purée made the dish though. The staff are somewhat friendly but I found them a little abrupt, so it might just be all put on for “show” since this is meant to be one of the fine dining places in Tanunda... I would return anyway for the food. Price wise - on the expensive side.

Well this was a bit of a fancy dining experience. We went here for a date night and we were treated very well by the waiters. The food was very posh, but the open fireplace gives a nice cozy feel. The macaroon desert was plated well and had just the right balance of flavours to end a meal with. Just prepared to pay a bit extra than your average restaurant.

Discovered this place by accident on a Barossa weekend.  Very pleasantly surprised.  Food was very good, service was exceptional and whole experience very delightful. Particularly liked that they used & promoted local produce.    Highly recommended if you are in the area.

We had dinner here recently which we both enjoyed.

The food was good and the service was as expected . The wine list has a great selection and the pricing overall was reasonable.

The building history was interesting ( it's on the inside cover of the Menu ) and the remodelling as a restaurant makes for a comfortable dining experience

Worth a try for lunch or dinner if your in the area

Enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. Service was good. The wine list is quite extensive and reasonably priced. We had pork belly with cabbage which was well done. But the skin could be a bit crisper as there were some uneven cooking. But ortherwise tender and well seasoned. Highly recommend the tortelli with burnt butter and pumpkin. The pasta was aromatic and delicious. We also ordered a side of potatoes which was crispy but we felt lacking in flavour of garlic and rosemary.

Last night we enjoyed a very pleasant evening on the front verandah at 1918. We chose the Barossa on a Plate menu, 3 courses with matched wines. The ham hock terrine was served with a very mayonnaisey remolade, a good foil for the rich fried pork. Next, the redgum smoked spatchcock was served with grilled mushrooms and a sweet corn sauce, a creamy and well balanced dish. At this stage we would have appreciated something green (small salad or steamed asparagus) to temper the richness. The final course was a pannacotta with berries which was good but not sophisticated enough for this menu. We had a nice evening, but if this was my place, I'd give the waiting staff (all pleasant) more training about what they are serving as the information they offered last night was patchy at best, (even after we asked for a description of what was being served), and get some new serving ware, and include a side with the main courses to balance the meal. Overall worth a visit, just be a bit demanding.

Had the scotch, medium rare. 300 gram cut $39. The charcuterie platter for two, $30. Was tasty, the duck pate rocked my world. Could have happily eaten an entire bowl of the creamy smooth lover combination! For a more fancy night out, worth the splurge!

Visited 1918 for dinner on a hot Barossa evening. The restaurant is obviously what used to be an old house so it is very large but made of a number of rooms. We were seated inside and with very heavy curtains it seemed like a bit of a waste as the gardens outside are lovely. The dining room was very nicely decorated so no complaints and when the sun went down it suited the room very well. There is an option to sit outside but it was a very hot evening so inside with the A/C was very welcomed!

The service was friendly and attentive with drinks topped up, plates cleared and offers of coffee, dessert, etc. well timed. The food is French inspired with most dishes borrowing from one or two classics. We ordered duck and a beef eye fillet. Both were cooked very well and with the addition of side dishes were filling. Dessert was similarly themed and the wine list was reasonable without being extensive.

Oh this place has beautiful food....first dinner out in Barossa Valley and we came here after being recommended by staff from one of the wineries....did not disappoint! Perfectly cooked meat (ordered lamb and beef tenderloin for mains). Started off with some bread with Parmesan oil and even that was heaven. Ordered truffle mashed potatoes as a side dish 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great location in Tanunda Barossa Valley in an historically important building with gorgeous verandas to while away the day. Plenty of little nooks, just mention your specific needs when you book. The staff are excellent and really aim to please whilst presenting the region on a plate. Delicious wine on offer of course.

Breanna Jane and I ate here on the night of our engagement, and we couldn't have be happier with our choice!

The staff are very friendly and made us feel comfortable instantly. We shared delicious sourdough bread with olive oil for an entree which was amazing.

For mains with both enjoyed the Angus Porterhouse steak with a side of mashed potato. It was by far and away the best steak I have ever had. It was cooked to perfection and could have been cut with a butter knife. A top notch Barossa Shiraz made it that much better.

For desert we hard the passionfruit brûlée and strawberries with meringue and ice cream. Both mouth watering.

To top it off the staff wrote 'Congratulations' in chocolate sauce on our desert plate just to top off a perfect night.

Thanks again to the staff at 1918. We will definitely be back!

A short weekend escape to the Barossa Valley in South Australia recently saw us visit a number of pretty decent eateries, one of these being 1918. Located in the heart of the town of Tanunda, this restaurant is set inside a pretty historic looking house. There's outdoor seating the front courtyard which is looked pretty nice for a warm summer's evening, but we were afraid of mosquitoes so decided to venture inside. Stepping into the restaurant feels like you're walking back in time into the house of an well-to-do family from Australia's early settlement years. Sandstone walls, wooden floor boards and intricate ceilings were just a few of the decor items which caught my eye. There are few rooms with a number of dining tables which reminded me various rooms of a house. The largest room being the living room had the most tables but there were a number of smaller rooms which held a single larger table- perfect for a big group.

The food was lovely. The wine selection is great. Catering for all. But the service was terrible. We waited ages to have orders taken. We waited for the glasses to be topped up. So much so we ran out of water and wine and they were kept away from the table. The worse thing was the waiters were chatting a lot. The room was freezing. So in summery. Well done kitchen the food was great. The service let you down.

A warming restaurant in middle of Tununda town, a wine region so most of their foods were inspired and invented by their local wine.
Entrees and Desserts were great, especially the Venison Carpaccio, a special entree of the day and it was definitely a hero of our meals. Mains was a little bit disappointed as too salty and lack of jus. Overall, a great place to experience at night within the Barossa wine region.

Magnificent food and service. Just leaving 1918 now and wanted to share our experiences. On arrival we were immediately greeted with a friendly smile and taken to a table. After being seated on a rather busy Friday night we had sparkling water at our table within 3 mins. Our friendly waitress explained specials and then asked us if we'd like bread, to which we replied yes and again it was at our table within 3min. This fast, well timed and very courteous service continued throughout our meal.
We started with the pork rilletes which were very nicely balanced with an apple jelly and mustard pickle and a serve of warmed bread drizzled with e.v. olive oil. Very enjoyable and enough for two people.
One main was the angel hair pasta with smoked Atlantic salmon, asparagus, zucchini and a creme fraîche sauce. Delicious but very filling and with great contrasts in texture. The other main was the lamb rack with mushy peas, black pudding, radish flakes and jús. Ordered medium rare, and that's how it was served. Beautifully tender and succulent, two cutlets were at either send of a rectangular plate with a piece of filo-wrapped black pudding in the middle. The black pudding was divine and complimented the other flavours very well (the black pudding was somewhat peppery and that worked well with the sweeter jus and sweet fresh mushy peas). A meal well worth a 60km trip from Adelaide just on its own.
Dessert was shared, and was a trio of jam filled warm cinnamon donuts served with hazelnut ice cream and pedro ximinez chocolate sauce (a bit like a very thick cream though). It was very nice indeed but the mains were the highlight of the food for sure.
Brilliant all round and we're glad to have visited, despite the other "unhappy" reviews on Urbanspoon that fly in the face of 1918s excellent approval rating.

Well Worth the Visit. I've dined here several times and have never been disappointed! From the food to the service to the setting, all are always top notch.
Such care always goes into each meal and the kitchen are always more than accommodating when it comes to any dietary requirements, no such thing as a boring plain salad for the gluten free!

I highly recommend anyone to dine here, it is well worth the price.

Well-priced considering the level of presentation of the food, serving portions suitably substantial without being excessive. Wouldn't think twice about returning in future - very happy.

Divine Accident!. Whilst looking for a completely different (and extremely hard to find) restaurant, the wife and I stumbled upon this gem... And we were so glad we did!

A relaxing & homely atmosphere, including open wood fires and friendly smiles all round, made us feel like we'd been there a hundred times...so welcoming.

The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating and very well spoken. The food equally impressed, my Atlantic Salmon filet was cooked to perfection and the bed of pork packed a real flavour punch...i all but licked the plate clean.

The desserts were also lovely and not too rich. I recommend the Petite Fours.

If your in the Barossa and looking for a real treat that won't cost the earth, 1918 will be sure to satisfy. Try it!

Still Good. We visited here 11/7/14 for the second time, first time was about 4 years ago and was memorable. This time was no different, food was great. Entree we had the trout and Carpaccio, both great dishes. Mains I had the tenderloin (rare) it was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth, hubby had the sirloin which he really enjoyed. Wine list was as you would expect in this region and we managed to down a great bottle of bubbles the an awesome coldstream pinot. We will be back. Great work guys..

Dined here one cold winter's night when Appellation was closed (the locals said it closes for a month - July - every year).

1918 is in a little cottage. Inside, high ceilings, a lovely fireplace, overall quite nice.

We had the quail, beef caparccio, Angus steak, pork belly and creme brulee.

Can't say which is my favourite as they were all nicely done.

Waitress was friendly and attentive. Despite having some noisy diners sitting in the table next to us (noisy AND sleazy as they were trying to pick up our waitress), we enjoyed the overall dining experience.

Really good again. I hadn't been here for a few years as the previous time (2009?) was a bit underwhelming, but I was very happy to find that it's now really good again - outstanding food, beautifully presented and perfectly balanced, friendly service at just the right pace, and lovely atmosphere. I think the competition from FermentAsian next door has definitely been a good thing for 1918 and for all visitors to the Barossa!

We ended up here by accident because The Lord Lyndoch's kitchen closes at 8pm (??). Thankfully we called 1918 around 8.30 and they were happy to fit us in. Amazing steak that was the perfect combination of charred edges and melted in the mouth, accompanied by a refreshing salsa. Fish of the day was well cooked and presented. Beautifully finished with lime yoghurt parfait (see photo). The service was absolutely amazing, the waitress was friendly and attentive. Nice decor and seating in the front garden for summer nights. Great place to dine. A lovely Barossa stone, historical cottage with pressed metal ceilings, lead light glass, timber and plaster archways, with timber floors, and all the rooms opened up to each other, but with enough walls left to make more intimate dining areas. These walls are adorned throughout with local photos and art work. One room is kept separate for private parties, meetings etc. In winter there are three fireplaces lit with roaring fires, while in summer, on a balmy Barossa evening, you may choose the vine-covered verandah area, overlooking lawn and gardens.
From a selective menu of predominately fresh local produce, for entrees we enjoyed salt and pepper soft shell crab, green papaya, coriander and mint salad, sweet and sour chilli dressing (quite hot and spicy). Also tempura battered king prawns with daikon, carrots and wakami salad, bonito mayonnaise, delicious!. Our mains were, Szechwan peppered kangaroo fillet, kim chi, shallot cake, Korean BBQ sauce. (The Korean components makes this dish quite hot and spicy) elegantly presented and very tender. Plus, from the weekly special menu, the char grilled Coorong Angus scotch fillet, with roasted parsnips, garlic aioli and grilled Scultz's bacon, mouth watering. Our accompanying wines were, a 2012 Tom Foolery "Trouble & Strife" Rose, and 2011 Tom Foolery "Son of a Gun" Cabernet/Shiraz, excellent choices. For deserts we chose Macadamia and banana bread pudding, white chocolate sauce, popcorn ice cream, caramelised banana, and from the specials menu a kaffir lime brûlée, with a strawberry orange and basil salad and mandarin sorbet, both had great presentation and combination of flavours.
The service was prompt, friendly and helpful, contributing to an outstanding evening. This is far
superior to your average bar and grill, testified to by the number of both locals and tourists dining on a mid week evening. Bookings are essential.

Amazing food sketchy service. My boyfriend and I went there over the Christmas and NY break. The stand out meal for me was the Pork Belly Entree it was so delicious! Everything was well poportioned and delicious! The downside was that the waitress rarely came to check on us, was quite hard to get their attention, as the restaurant is spread out over a house and garden. The one thing that ruined it a little was that it got quite chilly later in the night, we were seated outside, and the mosquitos dined on us. We asked the waitress to turn on the heater (labelled clearly heatstrip on the side - a well known brand) and she claimed that it was a speaker!! Which was a bit poor. She didn't offer any other suggestions either! Lucky their food is amazing and sustaining their business, as there's not much in town at night.

Service was attentive and good humoured without being intrusive. The house and garden were lovely to eat in, we were on the garden verandah but you could choose from inside, verandah or lawn. Admittedly the garden chairs took a bit of getting used to. We had a spanishnstyle gazpacho to start with a bruschetta like pizza, Greek style lamb chops with couscous, cauliflower hummus and falafel and I had the chicken with polenta, sausage and watercress emulsion. We shared a bottle of Willows winery Shiraz.

A Barossa favourite. We come here every time we are in the Barossa and it is a must do for interstate and international quests to Adelaide. I adore their crisp pork belly, it is perfection in every way. My gent loves the lamb which is cooked to a mouth watering pink every time.

Sometimes the services isn't a top notch as you'd like as quite a few of the wait staff are teenagers, but I've never been so offended to come away disappointed. Having said that, now having spent extensive time in SA and WA through work, I've had to accept that poor service is the norm and my Sydney standards have softened somewhat of late.

After our morning visit to Barossa Chateau at Lyndoch Hill, Lyndoch Bakery and The Whispering Wall at Barossa Reservoir, we finally reached our lunch destination- 1918 Bistro and Grill. This Restaurant is located in one of the major towns of Barossa Valley- Tanunda. The restaurant was a family home back in 1918, in 1992 it turned into Barossa’s first bistro and grill. It is now under the management of the new owners from 2005. Exterior of the Restaurant- a little cottage The weather was lovely outside, we initially sat outside in the front courtyard. 10 minutes later, I could feel the sun burning on my neck. I told York I want to move inside since I don’t want to get a sunburn. The waitress was very understanding, cleared our table very quickly and moved us to a window seat inside the restaurant.
