Review Quaff - Toorak

Anita S
So refreshing to find a pleasant restaurant on Mothers Day that does not have a set menu at an exorbitant price and allows you to choose from the normal a la carte menu. Ambience is good with walls of mirrors making the room appear even bigger (upstairs) Staff were friendly and professional. Food was tasty. Slight disappointment was the soufflé that was the most expensive dessert on the menu and looked good from the outside, yet was runny and like undercooked batter on the inside - had to leave it. There are also a couple of nice function rooms for private events.
Dr Eve's Health Emporium
Nice and pleasant place with a great food. The waiters were very attentive and the service was extremely efficient. We had a function and we used the function room upstairs. The room was not bad, but could do a bit better, to have the sophisticated feel we were after. The finess and the "whoomph" were missing for the 5 star rating.Very pleasant place with delicious food in Toorak.

Excellent food and service, nicely designed place, upmarket feel and very attentive waiters. All three dishes I had were exceptional and well balanced. The pork belly nice and tender with crispy top, Kangaroo fillet also very tender, not gamey at all with a nice rich sauce and their version of Eton Mess looked fabulous with some tasty little meringues...helpings were not large but sufficient.

Had a sensational few hours in this beautiful little restaurant, and the food was superbly cooked & served. The Staff were lovely and atmosphere inviting. Will be back again soon!

Came here for a Mother's Day dinner and ordered the calamari for the entree and had the steak, lamb rump and fish for the mains. The mains are about $40/each. Ambience wise the restaurant is quite nice. Has that fine dining restaurant feel to it. The staff were very friendly and accommodating which I really appreciated. The problem was with the food. For the price and based on previous reviews I read when choosing to book the place, I expected better. The food was not bad, but was it $40+ good? I don't think so. Would I recommend this place? Probably not.

This fine dining restaurant in Toorak offers great food with great service. The private function room upstairs is a great place to enjoy your corporate meetings with the exquisite cuisine and well selected wine choices. One of the starter was salt and pepper calamari-thinly sliced pieces covered with crispy melting butter delicately placed on a bed of babaganoush lace surrounded by grilled cucumber and piece of fried crispy chilli-delicious...The main was chard grilled eye fillet steak with red wine jus cooked to perfection with blackened brussels sprouts and garlic mash...followed by a delicately arranged orange and vanilla custord mille feuille crostoti pastry finished with flaked almonds.

“Quaff” is undeniably the best place in Melbourne for Soufflé, to which they always have sweet and savoury options. Reliable and unbeatable.

Friendly service, nice drinks, and good atmosphere. Kitchen apparently closes early if it's a slow day so probably don't come late at night like I did if food was what you were going after for.

Been here a handful of times now because it’s established itself as such a consistently pleasant experience - why bother with the anxiety of trying somewhere new and being disappointed.<br/>Every time we visit I find myself subconsciously coordinating my next visit.<br/>Lovely service, beautiful seasonal food and the most ridiculously elegant and balanced lemon soufflé...what more could a girl need!

I loved the elegant setting of this restaurant. The staff member who served us was nice but he seemed new. The place was very quiet when we came but he was unsure of whether we could get a table without a booking. He asked the other staff member who said we could take our pick of tables. We went for the two course lunch special which came with a glass of wine. I love corned beef so had the homemade corned beef which was disappointing. It didn't taste great but the mash was lovely. My friend had the Moroccan beef salad which was good. My poached pear for dessert was average. All in all, it was a disappointing experience but maybe we just picked the wrong items off the menu. The service was good and the staff was friendly.

Had dinner the other night here. The food was tasty. The bread rolls were very soft and the fish was well cooked and exactly as per what we ordered. The only disappointment was my brother ordered the fish pie and it was sub par and very mushy. Worth going.

I found that Quaff had fish pie on their menu and that was what I felt like eating. So that's where we ended up going. <br/><br/>I did like the pastry, it had a nice crunch to it, but would of wanted the traditional potato topping instead. The filling was a little too liquidy / watery for me. Maybe I'm just chasing down / expecting the same fish pie (not from here) I had years ago and this wasn't it. I enjoyed my king fish and scallop entree more than the fish pie I especially went to eat. <br/><br/>

Wonderful service and everything on the menu is always delicious. Really well presented food which is not overly complicated or overpriced. Love coming here regularly they do a fantastic soufflé and eye filler.

A friend recommended this place for us to meet for a light lunch. Parking was difficult - very busy area - but I eventually found street parking about 250m away in a side street. The restaurant is an old worldly venue - starched white linen table cloths. It was peaceful despite being on Toorak Road. There was a lunch special - 2 courses plus wine for $38 but I opted for just a main. Service was friendly but not overt - my friend and I had plenty of time to consider the menu and chat. I chose the fish pie - when it arrived it appeared enormous, but the puff pastry exaggerated the size. The actual contents were about the right size for lunch and were very tasty. My friend had the scallops which were also well prepared. We finished with coffee that was very good. Price was a little higher than I had anticipated, $86 for 2, but I guess that's Toorak.

Some very delicious food here. Love the vibes and peaceful atmosphere that the restaurant brings to the area. Service is incredible and staff are extremely knowledgeable <br/> ❤️🐷

I had the calamari for entree which was full of flavour. The Cajun chicken for the main was very nice, the corn blended well and gave the overall taste a unique touch which I enjoyed.

Quaff is a reliable local (Toorak Village) restaurant. The fish pie is always excellent and their beef filet is good. Atmosphere is 'conservative' - suited to older guests.

I had a beautiful fish pie here for dinner. Crispy pastry, fluffy mashed potatoes and yummy light filling. Service was nice. Restaurant ambience was quiet and elegant.

This place was our go to dinner nearby. Unfortunately after tonight, it seems to be going downhill. We had duck and steak. The duck breast was over cooked and dry. I felt like the dish was incomplete with the side being more of a garnish ( coriander leaves dressed with Thai dressing) on the side of confit duck and 'slow roast' dry duck breast with jus. It seemed a bit lost. <br/><br/>The banana parfait however was nice, however not up to date with the aesthetic plating trend in 2017. <br/><br/>What a shame, this place was my 'neighbourhood gem'

Had a very lovely experience here. Service was great. food was very delicious. ordered the prawns, mussels, steak and the fish pie and they all were tasty. will for sure go back and try other things on the menu

Had a most pleasant lunch here with an old friend. The Service and ambience were nice, the food excellent. The lunch special for two courses for $38 with a glass of wine was not only good value but excellent. We had twice cooked tomato and cheese soufflé which was very tasty. Following this we both had the whiting with chips. The fish was fresh and both it and the chips were excellently cooked and nicely crispy. The wine was also very good indeed, we shall certainly return soon.

We come here every year for our annual Christmas party and hire one of the private function rooms upstairs. For set menus for functions there is a lot of variety to choose from. And the service is fantastic, food even better and we always leave here happy.
PW Lou
Was there for a work function. We had the group menu. Starter was the salmon and potato cake - it was nice and refreshing. Main course was the barramundi and I enjoyed that with its crispy skin. The dessert was vanilla Panna cotta which was also nice.<br/><br/>Good service with reasonable priced food.

Quaff is probably the best restaurant that I have been to that starts with a Q<br/><br/>It's also probably the only one <br/><br/>I'm not being mean though it's genuinely a good restaurant, the service was prompt and the food was very decent <br/><br/>A highlight was the table of wealthy toorak residents next to us that had no idea what a soufflé was. Clearly you don't have to be smart to be rich.

Lovely setting and wait staff were charming, but a bit absent towards the end of the meal but only two on the floor so that's probably why. My calamari entree was ok. My roast duck main was dry and the pear witlof salad accompanying it was stingy on the pear at a time when they are in abundance in Melbourne and inexpensive. Others dining with me really enjoyed the zucchini flowers and the pork belly. My friends liver was very over cooked, why she didn't send it back is beyond me. I wish I'd chosen better. Sad panda me!

Had a beautiful dinner last night. The staff were delightful and the food fantastic. The prawns for entree were great and the lamb blackstrap was worth the trip. Highly recommend a visit.

Among the various alcoholic beverages one can choose from, be it a sparkling, elegant glass of champagne or a man sized jug of beer, wine would always win hands down in my books. I am a fan of fruity scents, especially when leaves a crisp, mildly sweet aftertaste on the palate. I have recently attended my first ever wine tasting event held at Quaff in South Yarra. We had an event room to ourselves where we were entertained and briefed by a representative from the Leeuwin Estate.

Read the reviews I had a totally different experience. Food was up to expectation, nothing fancy. Service was disappointed below my expectations. I don't have high expectations because I'm in service industry but I'm critical of below standard services.

Quaff had a lovely setting and nice ambience, ideal for a quiet meal I think. Our main waiter and the kitchen staff made a few blunders, forgetting some orders. Our waiter had a fairly good demeanour though, despite his occasional professionalism hiccups. The food was mostly very nice. The best of the entrees was easily the quail--very juicy, tasty and crispy all in one! The gnocchi was in second place, rolled into long pieces and given a great moist element in the form of the avocado mousse. It actually went very nicely with the crab elements also. A very pleasantly tasty dish. The tuna was a huge let-down for me. It was completely flavourless despite its looks and was easily overpowered by the excessive citrus pulp. The fennel cream was quite aniseedy too which in my opinion was a poor match. The pork belly was nowhere near topnotch, a bit soft and soggy, not crispy. As far as mains go, the steak was the best of them, having great flavour and was well cooked. The accompanying green bean and feta salad was quite nice, though at odds with the steak and jus in terms of flavour. The lamb was so-so, slightly dry and the fetta-spinach crust failed to add anything to the overall flavour. Sadly, the supposed signature dish of Quaff was mostly a disappointment. The giant fish pie was like a pot-pie. The pastry on top was good, but the filling let it down significantly. Instead of a hearty sauce inside that was more gravy-like, it was basically a runny juice, with all of the solid pie fillings lying at the bottom. The sauce was very underwhelming, relying way too much on white wine and only had the slightest hint of creaminess. The truffle flavour never surfaced. The fish had the consistency of well-done chicken, which was probably more due to the way it had been cooked. For me this didn't do it any favours as the anticipated texture of fish was not there, with the pieces being dry and tough. The accompanying mash was ok, but it wasn't very wispy and smooth so I've definitely had much better. Finally, desserts were a pleasant finish. The passionfruit soufflé was very good: light, saucy and fruity--a delight. The mille feuille was pretty good too, although I think it would have been better with fresher mango. I may come back to quaff now that a lot of the actual nice dishes have been revealed. The pleasant atmosphere there gives it extra points as a desirable spot to eat (especially outside of winter).

Amazing, amazing food and staff. Probably my favourite restaurant in Melbourne. Will definitely be coming back again and again.  Thanks Quaff!

Really impressed by the dining experience I had with my family at Quaff!<br/><br/>The service was impeccable and made all the difference. We were greeted at the door and they knew instantly who we were and where we were to be seated. The waitress kept our wine and water glasses topped up, checked up on us regularly to see if everything was ok and if we needed anything else. She was able to make some good food recommendations, and also assisted us with various requests (i.e.: butter instead of oil for bread, extra bread, hot water, serving a birthday cake, settling the bill early, using the entertainment book voucher, etc). <br/><br/>The menu was very clever and simple to understand with succinct dish titles, and a beautiful description do the dish beneath. <br/>Zucchini flowers - crunchy and long, looked impressive on the plate. I'm not a fan of goats cheese so I didn't try much of this entree.<br/>Prawns - fresh, plump and delicious with a crunchy potato ring and yummy sauce and citrus salad.<br/>Quaff Fish Pie - generously sized crispy golden pastry atop a creamy and flavoursome white wine fish and vegetable mixture, and silky potato mash seasoned with parsley throughout. This was definitely the most popular dish as most diners at the restaurant appeared to have a pie in front of them.<br/>Kangaroo - cooked to perfection and was moist and tender. The kangaroo came with a "beetroot sausages" which was an absolute delight! It has the texture of a meat sausage but the yummy flavours of beetroot! Not sure how they achieved this, but it sure impressed me!<br/>Steak - nice cut of meat and cooked well. The accompaniments and gravy sauce were tasty.<br/>Chicken - beautifully presented and coated with smokey spices, well balanced with a citrusy herbed garnish.<br/>Fish - didn't get to taste this but it looked delicious and the skin looked nice and crispy.<br/>Sides of asparagus, French fries and broccoli/cauliflower were great additions to the main meals.<br/><br/>The atmosphere was great on a Monday night. It was pretty much a full house in the downstairs section of the restaurant and the slightly older Toorak crowd seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves and "Quaffed" down their wine (see what I did there? Haha).<br/><br/>Thank you Quaff for a wonderful dinner!

Great venue for a dinner with friends. Simple dishes done well with friendly attentive service. Highly recommended the fish pie and the steak. Passionfruit soufflé was amazing!

Quaff is a classy establishment that exudes quality.  On a recent visit the spinach and goat's cheese risotto entree was an unexpected surprise, as was the mango mille feuille desert.

Very average and pricey for what you get. Partner had the rib eye which was not cooked to medium rare. He could barely get the meat off the bone it was so tough. The potato accompaniment was basically half a potato completed drenched in aioli. I wasn't too hungry so got the gnocchi as my main and it was beyond average for the price of $17!

What a great dinner. In love with the ambience and service with great food. Love the wine list and the stuffed zucchini flowers are divine as are the steaks and duck. 5/5

Meal - was good, but have similar quality for cheaper elsewhere. <br/>Price - Reasonable for the lunch special, expensive otherwise.<br/>Portion size - Good for the price.<br/>Service - Excellent.<br/>Ambience - Typical old money Toorak crowd and fell, excellent decor.<br/><br/>Will return to try other offerings.

An elegant and sophisticated restaurant that is perfect for both larger get together or a more intimate rendezvous.  The menu is excellent, the food tastes and looks top-class, dishes are generous in size, all without being exorbitantly priced!  The scallop entree at the time was a particular highlight for me.  Service is of a high standard- attentive and efficient- and staff had a very in depth knowledge of the menu which was rather impressive!

Simply beautiful every time.  The team here clearly love their work, and is a delight to visit.<br/><br/>Have been here a few times, and is always reliable.  Great place for an elegant meal that focusses on great flavour more than elaborate dishes.

Function we will remember for a life time. Recently booked our wedding ceremony and reception here. The food was to die for. The service was exceptional. Every question requirement concern was delt with with extreme professionalism. Highly recommend Bruce and his team for any person looking to plan a small to medium function.

Fine dining's back in Toorak. It's funny that the one strip in Melbourne you'd expect to find a smorgasbord of excellent eating options has for so long been the same old, stagnant restaurants more becoming of an outer suburban back street. Generally, except for the restaurant's prices and the glinting BMW X6's dotted along Toorak road, nothing would suggest you were in the main street of Melbourne's most affluent suburb.<br/>Quaff has always upheld the façade of fine dining; Well presented floor staff, neat, pressed linen and a pleasant ambiance and the food has always been decent... Well, at least better than anything else on that street.<br/>Went there for the first time in 6+ months this evening and was very pleasantly surprised.<br/><br/>For entrée, on our waitress's recommendation I opted for the sticky toffee pork belly with an Asian salad. It did exactly what it said on the label and was, in a word, excellent. <br/>The pork was wonderfully tender although not overcooked, it still held together on the plate nicely and melted in the mouth. Crackling perfectly crispy. Sauce sweet and well balanced. The salad was fresh and crisp with all the stars you'd expect- chilli, coriander peanuts, and lime juice that cut through the richness of the meat/sauce combo. <br/>The other entrée on my table was the zucchini flowers, tempura fried and presented nicely with quenelles of goats cheese either side. Lovely dish if not a fairly small portion for the price.<br/><br/>For main I had the lamb fillets. Once again Great. Served perfectly rare/med rare they somehow had a lot stronger flavour than I expected from fillet. A sweet potato gratin adorned with sweet potato crisps added some textural contrast and soaked up the jus beautifully.<br/>The other two dishes on the table were an Asian duck maryland and an eye fillet steak. Steak was cooked well, and both dishes were presented beautifully and enjoyed.<br/><br/>In terms of drinks, the champagne by the glass was ok... maybe just not to my tastes, though the Geoff Merrill cab sauv is a great choice and paired perfectly with the lamb and steak.<br/><br/>Our waitress was good, although staff in general could have been a bit more attentive, sometimes chatting amongst themselves, although working in hospitality myself I can relate to what it's like on quiet nights... I'm sure if it were busy they'd be hitting their straps.<br/>The only real negative was the waitress (or maybe manager?) who brought us our bill. Fairly curt, and not very friendly. A warm smile and a genuine "thankyou guys" would have put the cherry on the cake.

I would definitely go to Quaff again for late night delectable decadence.<br/>

Overall: 13/20 It would have got higher rating had not been for the sorbet but I will go back for the pie! According to a reliable source they also have a open pie with a creamy fish filling which apparently is delightful!

sampling the other Toorak Village offerings including Romeo's and Topo Gigio . The last one to complete the trio was Quaff.

Cooked to the point of perfect translucency, the scallops were bite sized pieces of heaven. The prosciutto crumbs added much aromatic crunch, serving as a delightful contrast that brought out the silky tenderness and natural flavour of the scallop.

...hearty fare, cooked and presented well in a nice location.

Situated in the heart of Toorak Village, Quaff is a sleek and informal restaurant. Head chef John Psanis is a man with an impressive resume - having been a key talent behind The Botanical, Paysan, Browns and One Fitzroy Street.

We started the night off with the entrée tasting plate and a serve of perfectly fried calamari. There were several choices for mains and we swayed towards the red meats. Each dish was served with common meat and vegetable combinations that were prese

Regularly driving past Toorak Rd, I had never taken notice of Quaff Restaurant until after walking past, a friend mentioned she had wanted to dine there. It appeared to be a nice modern restaurant serving Modern Australian fare so we decided to give it a chance. Upon arrival, service was a bit scattered and not very friendly. We requested a menu and the wine list to look over while we were waiting for our friends to arrive. Each couple decided to order a chef's tasting plate each. The majority of the chef's tasting plate was deep fried and was nothing special. The whole dish felt rather uninspired and the grilled bread in the middle was extremely stale and hard after being grilled. Quaff's Taste Plate The Duck breast was tender and pink inside however the five spiced duck sausage was very grainy and it disliked by all 3 who had ordered this dish. Crispy skin Duck breast with five spiced duck sausage When presented with the Fish pie, everyone remarked how extremely large it was. It was

Great restaurant with sensational food and friendly service. The raspberry soufflé was the highlight!

Trifecta!!!! Good food...good service.....good cleanliness!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!. Quaff was awesome from reservation till post meal. The staff were friendly and attentive without being pushy. Its a relaxing setting, comfortable chairs and clean bathrooms- which is a plus in my book.<br/>The menu was easy to choose from with the King prawns for entree(or the crusted mozarella), duck for main and passionfruit soufle my absolute favourites. <br/>Great for a quiet dinner, a date, or a function thats upstairs.<br/>Will definately go back!!!!!

Disappointed. We had a dinner for 8 at Quaff last night ,and ambience and service was excellent but I chose the <br/>Beef special . It was a very ordinary steak with a quarter gristle, a few fried chats and and spoonful of aioli .<br/>Not something you go to a restaurant for .

Highly Recommend. I held my birthday dinner in the White Room at Quaff during August 2014 and it well and truly exceeded my expectations. From my initial enquiry right through to the end of the evening was a seamless, professional experience. <br/><br/>The room was beautifully set. The staff and service was incredible. The food was absolutely delicious!! I selected from one of their group menu options and could not have been happier. Guests were able to choose from a variety of beautiful dishes which catered for everyone. <br/><br/>I cannot speak highly enough of our experience at Quaff. My guests and I were over the moon with the food and service and it made my night extra special!!
Food For Thought..
Beautiful. Even though we ate at Quaff some time ago, I felt the need to write a review. Our experience here was amazing. The service was outstanding, and the food was just beautiful. Thank you for making it such a memorable experience and we look forward to coming back when we are in Melbourne.

What a fabulous place! Service was faultless and the food was absolutely delicious; so much flavour. Would highly recommend.

Delish!. This our favourite restaurant for 'fancy' occasions. Service has been average but we barely notice due to the fantastic food. Save this for a three course meal type of night - so worth it!

So impressed with Quaff! A classy fit out and pleasant staff were a great start, but the food was on another level again. Each plate was a work of art and every mouthful delicious. Will certainly be returning and recommending wholeheartedly!

Excellent Wedding Venue. We were married at Quaff on 2nd May2014. We had the ceremony in the white room. The room was beautiful, so elegant and classy. We then celebrated with 40 guests in the crystal room. Bruce was so helpful with the planning of our wedding and ensured it ran smoothly and without hiccups. The staff were attentive and professional. The food was fantastic and all my guests reported that their meals were of a high standard and delicious. We have heard nothing but praise for the food, the venue and the staff from our guests.<br/><br/>I would thorroughly recommend Quaff for a wedding venue any time. Thank you Quaff for making our wedding day so special! !,

Vintage boy. I just have to say, my 60th in the upstairs bar room could not have been better managed by the professional and relaxed staff. Thirty guests enjoyed top quality function food, perfectly presented and promptly served across 4 courses. Nothing was too much trouble. My music, decorations, entertainment, all catered for! Thank you Quaff team
John Smith
The food was of mixed quality. Scallops for entree were excellent but risotto bigger than the mains and dull. Mains we're quite good (duck and kangaroo), albeit far too much overpowering sauce. This would have been acceptable if not for the terrible service. I wish to note that the other staff seemed very polite and friendly but our particular waiter was extremely standoffish and happy to drop our plates in front of us. Quality service would have made this night much more enjoyable.

Class and quality x infinity. Thank you for two recent experiences of high quality food and service.<br/>Beautiful presentation and exquisite food.<br/>My only suggestion is more elegant waiting uniforms. (Miniskirts starkly detract from the elegant surrounds)<br/>Well done everyone.<br/>xx

Great Service!. My husband and I had the idea to go to Quaff for dinner for New Years Eve 2013 after being there once for lunch a year ago and having a great experience. Only thing is, this time we had a 8 month baby with us, whom we wanted to include in our plans for NYE night!<br/>Staff at Quaff did not have a high chair, but they were nice and understanding, and allowed us to bring in our whole pram into the restaurant. Not only that, last minute I asked to add 2 more people to our booking and they accounted for them as well. Great service and flexibility, especially considering it was such a big night for dining, New Years and they had a full busy restaurant. I appreciated the effort and understanding, as many other restaurants in this position would not have bothered and turned us back from the start. <br/>Will definitely be returning again, amazing food, great service, best restaurant to dine at in the Toorak area!! :)

Very good. We went there for my birthday a few months ago. From the seating to the entrée, main and dessert - everything was wonderful!<br/>Yes it is expensive - fine dining, but what a wonderful night it was, and I don't usually say that about many fine dining restaurants, most seem very overpriced and disappointing, but I have to say this got a 10/10 from us!<br/>I had the fish pie which they are known for and although I don't usually like these sort of seafood dishes (usually a bit rich and creamy for my liking) I LOVED this one!!! I would go back just for this!!! <br/>But, like I said - the service, and the food were all worth returning for.

Was there for a function, with excellent food and good service. My steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. Also enjoyed the salt and pepper calamari. I don't know how much it cost (probably $70 or more per head) but it was very good. Would recommend.

Amazing Food Amazing Service. My Partner and I go out to dinner quite alot, we enjoy a sophisticated meal at sophisticated restaurants and out of all the ones we have tried we listed this Restaurant a 10/10.<br/><br/>Beautifully executed meals and pleasent service. <br/>Could not have asked for anything more and could not honestly fault a thing.<br/><br/>We will definitley be going back, next time with a group of people.<br/><br/>Thank you Quaff

Disappointing. Not overly hungry, so the 4 of us ordered just the main course, some having a glass of wine.we shared a dessert between us, and maybe this didn't make us special enough, and hence the indifference on entry and exit. I ordered a steak, which the average pub can do reasonably well. However Quaff presented me with a steak dripping blood( though I'd asked for moderate ). and almost impossible to cut. It was a very poor quality piece of meat. When clearing the table , no interest in why so much of the meal had been returned. I didn't say any more as we had a couple from interstate and I didn't want to create a fuss.

A disappointing meal had on July 13th. We were rushed through a dining experience - three courses completed in less than 90 mins even after we asked for a rest before desert. Food extraordinarily expensive and nothing special for what it was. I wondered if the two function rooms upstairs impacted upon the food and the overall experience of the diners below! Dirty coffee cups stacked along the bar, no fond farewell, thanks for coming, hope you enjoyed your meal! Just the look of indifference from the staff as we headed to the door. Our expectations where high from reading many Urbanspoon reviews, but complacency and perhaps the address got in the way of a good night.
Went With Me Missus
Enjoyed it, but lacking the 'it' factor. Went with me sister. Had a quail dish for entree, duck for main and a glass of red to match (me sister had lamb for main). Food was neatly presented and meat cooked adequately. Their use of sauce was slightly more than adequate and collided with the flavour of the meat - that's the only thing I would point out if I were to be picky.<br/><br/>You know how every suburbian street has a restaurant for the locals specialising in contemporary australian cuisine? Well, this one is for Toorak. No less and no more than a restaurant for the locals. It didn't have the 'it' factor that make even the visitors want to come back. <br/><br/>Food 5/8 Wine service 1.5/3 Service 3/4 Atmosphere 2/3 Value 1<br/>Total 12.5
Andy
Why?. Wait staff had no idea, basically said go where you want, napkins left on the table, no wine list offered we had to ask for it. Food was dry and overcooked with lack of flavour. Shame we were expecting so much more. Disappointing to say the least.
Maya Rana
Don't bother. No reason why this place has such a high Urbanspoon rating? Perhaps the lack of options in Toorak Village - this is the best of the worst? I'm still yet to try Manhattans, but don't hold out high hope.<br/><br/>Food is awful, I never say no to dessert, but I did on this occasion.<br/><br/>Only saving grace is a decent wine list with minimal markup, quite surprised really.

Beautiful food ruined by a waiter with arrogance, attitude and no idea as to what his job entailed. His attitude to special needs was condescending. Food took over an hour to arrive and no explanation or apology was offered. By contrast the bill was tossed onto the table in less than 30 seconds after no order for dessert was given. An awful waiter ruined what could have been a brilliant night!
Andrew
Thank you to the to the Quaff staff for such an amazing experience. The Pork belly followed by the fish pie (which is a must have). Desert was orange soufflé was to die for... Great wine selection and service that puts a smile on the dial. A highly recommended experience that will please not only the mind but defiantly also the pallet. Cheers Beetles :-)

Nice restaurant, romantic cosy feeling. Food was delicious; I ordered the John Dory which was delivered with a very crispy skin and the fish itself melts in your mouth. Service was friendly and attentive. Went on a Friday night and was surprisingly quite quiet but definitely recommend it! Will visit again.

Good but unlikely to return. Largely this investigation was undertaken based on the reviews from this site.<br/><br/>This is not a negative review, but I'm not sure whether to tick "Likes" or "Doesn't Like". There are a lot of restaurants in town that are in the same category as Quaff - decent food, nicely presented and cooked with decent (but unspectacular) service in nice surrounds. It makes it difficult to distinguish oneself and Quaff does not stand out from the crowd.<br/><br/>I started with the pan-fried gnocchi which came sitting on an orange sauce with a few pieces of asparagus and goat's cheese strewn over the top. The gnocchi was nicely cooked with a good, gelatinous texture. The sauce didn't really add very much to the dish and was quite underwhelming. The goats cheese was a waste of time and the asparagus seemed an afterthought to provide a textural difference.<br/><br/>My friend had the tuna - four small cylinders of (I think) smoked tuna with an Asian-style spinach salad accompanying. The salad had a nice flavour and I was told the tuna was pretty good.<br/><br/>For main I had the oven-roasted lamb rack. It came with a miscellaneous jus a thick disk of potato (tasty) and a strip of eggplant and tomato salad. The lamb was nicely cooked although the parmesan crust didn't add much to the meal.<br/><br/>Friend had the chargrilled rib eye which was cooked just past the requested level and had a satisfying charred flavour. The chat potatoes that accompanied were good and were slathered in garlic aioli (I thought there was a little too much and it did detract from the crispiness of the spuds).<br/><br/>Dessert was the "lunchtime" panna cotta presented in a pool of passionfruit sauce and a lemon brulee tart with strawberry icecream.<br/><br/>I'm not usually a fan of panna cotta but this one wasn't too bad. Essentially tasting like a dollop of gelatinous clotted cream.<br/><br/>The lemon brulee tart (basically a lemon tart with the top singed brulee-style) was quite nice, although I wasn't sure about the juxtaposition of flavours with the strawberry icecream and balsamic reduction.<br/><br/>Oh, and while the waiter was able to point out the non-gluten free items on the menu there is no bread option available for gluten-free diners.

Menu was interesting and the food was sensational. Waiter service was well below par for this bracket of restaurant. Lovely ambience sitting beside the open front.

Amazing. I was a guest at a birthday dinner on Saturday night, the white room was amazing, such a beautiful room. The food was superb, a choice menu for a group of 30 and my steak was cooked perfect. The waiters were very professional, nothing was a problem and whole night went smoothly. I can't wait until I have a special occasion to celebrate.

Thank you quaff for a great night on Valentines evening, my partner thought it was the perfect restaurant. the peppered kangaroo was awsome

I had a function at Quaff in one of the upstairs room, the space was lovely but the service was unbelievably rude, not just disinterested or incompetent but really rude! They kicked us out of the room we'd booked (and paid for) early as they had to prepare for the next function. Everything we asked for (water etc) was just too much trouble, the waiters huffed and sighed their way through the event. Very disappointing!

This is the perfect dining spot for dining in Toorak. Been there many times, never disappointed by the food or service. A very inviting and relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy a variety of careful and well designed dishes. The king prawns with chilli and avocado sauce are just delightful, and that yummy crispy fresh calamari is seriously addictive. I hardly can choose between their succulent crispy sking duck breast, the quail and its incomparable chilli coconut sauce and the traditional but always perfectly cocked eye fillet with salsa verde that reminds me an argentinian dressing used with almost all their beef dishes. There is a fish pie which seems to be the chefs signature dish, wasn't to exited about it but after tried it I do recommend it. Dishes are always served with a selection of fresh vegetables and salads. Portions are ok, you'll find prices very reasonable. Most of the times I have not room for dessert but I wish i had, my favorite lemon souffle is not currently in the menu (hope this review helps to bring it back) <br/><br/>Im booking my wife's birthdays there next month as they also have two great functions rooms. She wants something formal and cozy at the same time so I've chosen their white room. Sure my wife and friends will be impressed, the room is very elegant just walking in makes you feel special. <br/>Tip: it gets really busy specially on the weekends so book in advance.

Ok. I read good things about this restaurant but my experience was pretty disappointing. <br/>When my fiancé and I arrived the staff member asked for our booking name and then once found they pointed to our seats, instead of walking us to our table and pulling out the chairs for us. <br/>Now my fiance's food was ok(king prawn taco for entre and a chicken dish as a main) but mine was very disappointing. <br/>I had the chilli calamari which wasn't even mildly hot and the calamari was a bit chewy( it looked like the frozen salt n pepper calamari you can buy from the fish shop). My main was the duck breast. It had nice flavors but the duck meat was way over cooked and very tough. As I'm a fan of duck I was very disappointed. I can't complain about the desserts, they were yummy! <br/>When we were finished and paid the bill, there was no staff member to say goodbye or open the door for us(they wouldnt of even noticed us leaving).<br/>But all in all I wasn't happy and won't go back(not worth it). There are hundreds of better places than this.

Quality food well presented and reasonably priced. Pork belly with apple slaw, quail, and zucchini flower entrees very good. Oysters deliciously salty but shucked poorly with bits of shell in a third of them. <br/><br/>Steaks cooked to order, spring asparagus and pea pan-fried gnocchi were lovely and light, and the fish pie a large and luscious combination of firm white fish, diced vegetables, delicate herbs and cream. Four fussy eaters happy, with a bottle of Voyager Shiraz included, came to $330, or $250 with Entertainment card discount before tip.<br/><br/>Service a bit variable but fairly efficient.

Bit fancy. Quaff is a little bit fancy! White tablecloths, high level service and a very reasonable priced wine list. <br/>Entrees were squid, scallops and pork belly. Scallops were an absolute highlight! squid was a bit plain.<br/>Mains were fish pie, veal, and steak. The fish pie is enormous!! The steak was ordered medium but was much closer to rare, it was sent back and returned perfect. <br/>The wine list is very reasonable priced also.<br/>Also in the entertainment book which is a bonus

Had a function in the private room upstairs, serving 20 people is never easy but the service was great and the food delicious. Pork belly and barramundi cooked to perfection. If you are looking for a good quality private room that won't blow the budget this is a great option.

This is our local favourite restaurant! We go here at every single opportunity because it really is such an amazing place! Service is always exceptional, food is totally amazing and those bread rolls.... OMG, to die for!!!! Plus, they sell my favourite winery's wine which is always rare. Love this place and will continue to come back again and again!

Jane. Last night dined for the 2nd time this month at Quaff with two friends, once again it was supberb. My husband started with the scallops, presented beautifully each on a bed of pureed veg then finished with a generous sprinkle of fried thinly sliced leeks. Delicious. The soy chicken with wild filed mushrooms was tender with just the right amount of sauce. Our friends had the duck and fish pie. Pie was a little disappointing with filling being too thick especially when combined with pastry topping. The star of desserts on the night was the lemon souffle, light as a feather, great tangy lemon flavour served with ice cream on the side, sensational! Staff were friendly and polite. The only picky comment would be our coffees were ordered with dessert and did'nt arrive until we asked and the order had been forgotten. We live close by Quaff and would say it is our current favourite restaurant.

Great Simple Food. Quaff's never disappoints, i am always satisfied with chilli dusted calamari and fillet steak with red wine jus and tapioca. Just fantastic.<br/>10/10 for food<br/>9/10 for appearance <br/>10/10 for ambience

The fish pie you must try!. Great service, good food and generous servings are always signs of our favourite restaurants. The chef (John Psanis) ensures the latter while the front end staff ensure the former. It's nice to find a place where the staff are trained to know the food and the wine list and make recommendations. <br/><br/>The stand out item by far on the menu was the fish pie. So much so that my partner (who likes not fish, nor truffles) stole mine and finished it off the first time I ordered it. Be warned, though, it truly is sized for two, so perhaps consider sharing it as a main to allow yourselves room for entrée or dessert.

Went here in a big group so we had a set menu. Not many choices. for each course only 3 choices =(. The food was so so. Entree salad was overflavoured and Main pork could have done with a bit of flavour. Its a nice restaurant, with eatable food. Nothing spectacular.
Shumai
Great service, good food and generous servings. Not recommended for couples wanting a romantic dinner though as the music and crowd upstairs ruins all atmosphere.
Sean
Great food, great service and great atmosphere. A new favourite. Recommend Quaff highly.
