Island Market is the new restaurant right on the beach at Trigg. Situated in the building that used to be Kailis fish cafe, and Trigg Island Cafe before that, it has had a makeover inside. Pastel colours, trees and a lofty airy feel, it still has the great view over the ocean – ideal for romantic sunset dinners.
It’s a weird mix of things, Island Market. Such a casual name, it could be a grocery store, and there is a buzz of activity, an outdoor area where people come in and order drinks at the bar, which is inside. We came on a Saturday night at 6.45pm and it was packed, and it was the perfect time to come and watch the sunset.
The room is big and open, with booths, like an American diner. Large jars of picked vegetables above the bar for decoration. A woodfire stove in the middle of the room which they apparently turn on in winter. And then the view. Well. It’s absolutely beautiful to watch the sun set over the ocean, and a whole wall of windows takes advantage of this. So, it’s a mix: sort of classy, sort of casual, a beachside restaurant that you could find anywhere in the world, with reasonably priced cocktails and wine, and a really quite interesting food menu.
We split some starters, some pita bread with labneh, taramasalata (delicious and creamy but not pink, like I’m used to) and a highlight, some local sardines that came in a tin. Eight king prawns, deep-fried in a savoury batter, were nice enough, 8 of them, which was appropriate for the four of us, though at $30, it seemed pricy. The corn on a cob with chipotle mayo was delicious, and I quite liked the t-bone steak, served quite rare, with some grilled mushrooms. And while I was thinking that the dishes were expensive for what you got, with two drinks a person, three starters and two mains, and a vegetable (they forgot to bring one of the mains, the kingfish crude), it was something like $220, which in the end I thought was quite cheap indeed.
The service was friendly but a bit all over the place. I think we had five different waiters! In any case, would I come in? Yes. Absolutely. And I’d recommend it to others too.
Hubby and I had breakfast here this morning. I had the smashed avo and hubby had the Persian scrambled eggs. It was absolutely delicious. Probably the best smashed avo I’ve ever had. Serving size was adequate however it was a bit odd it only comes with one poached egg.
Coffee was lovely however it could have been a bit hotter.
Gorgeous looking interior as well. We’ll definitely be back for breakfast.
Such a gorgeous spot for an afternoon nibble and a glass of wine with friends but service is not upto the mark. Food was good, wine was good, view was awesome.
Great spot to watch the sun set. Cute fitout with pastel colours. We shared the baba ganoush, falafel and pita bread (served warm). All delicious. I had a water the garden cocktail & my friend had the spritz. Cost was $24 each. Not bad for a drink & snack.
Extremely good food! Its a perfect local cafe for a catch up with an ocean view! The food was great and didn’t take too long to come. I would have preferred if they made their own juices instead of bought but would go back again.
We phoned to book a table earlier that day. We arrived on time and were shown to our seats looking out over the beach. Chairs are pastel wooden ones at a bench top. Water and menus were brought over straight away. My dining companion and I stated with baba ganoush, pita and olives with pickled vegetables. The pita was warm and arrived in a little pizza box. Our drinks were sparkling wine and a cocktail called ‘ Dirty Cola’
The following three plates we shared- Smokey calamari with aoli, prawns bbq with caponata and cos lettuce salad with radish and crunchy walnuts.
All were delicious and presented beautifully on the plates. No room for dessert but we did have another drink each before getting the bill. Lovely bar area and fireplace in the centre of the restaurant which I assume gets fired up when it’s winter.
Lunch with a friend, we got an adjacent window seat - amazing view on a very still afternoon. Initial service not so friendly, but our table waitress was amazing. There were three varieties of wine which I was unsure of, the waitress was well versed in the three and offered me a tasting of two before I decided. We ordered three dishes - calamari, kingfish and mussels. All amazing and faultless. Waitress was very attentive through our meal. It’s not super cheap, but definitely worth it. Will definitely be back.
Friendly and simply stunningly good food we sat in the window and watched the sunset on a warm balmy evening with a great bottle of red wine
To start the location is wonderful, right along the beach with great views and a blissful ambience. The service- friendly, fast and attentive. Lastly, the food. Wow, the cos lettuce salad was so delicious for something so simple and bothered the lamb and chicken pitas were so moorish and full of flavour. You could tell the pita was freshly cooked and not packet bought. Great place for lunch or dinner!
As a visitor from Melbourne we are always looking for good fish and chips. As we had been down to Scarborough beach earlier we decide to see what options were around for fish and chips. Google led us to Fork n fish. This little fish and chip shop did not disappoint. I can honestly say that the burger was the best I had had in awhile. The squid rings were delicious and cooked to perfection along with the chips. If you want really good chips and burgers along with squid then I would highly recommend trying out this place. Can not comment on fish as we did not have any but on what we had I would say it would be great. A bit pricey but the quality is there and that’s what count.
Have ordered here several times now since we moved to Trigg. Such beautiful fresh fish and generous chips. Family who run it are also lovely and friendly. He told us he used to be a chef in Perth hotels and you can certainly tell from the quality of his food.
It was the first time we tried this shop. Hooray, finally found a chef who can cook Snapper and chips. Good sized portions, tenderly cooked with an awesome non overpowering batter. Chips and Squid rings were great too!.
Thank you, will make you our number one Fish n Chip shop in our neighbourhood
Fish and chips in nz are a lot better then Aussie fish and chips... this place was one of the best I've had North or the river. The snapper and shark fish was great and the food was really well presented. 10/10 it's hard to find a good takeaway these days. Cheers Stan!
First time ordering at this place and the fish was lovely, batter perfect, and a good portion of chips, was actually left full 🥰,home made tartar sauce lovely to. Asked for a cold drink and they did that all correct, only mistake was I ordered a Coke no sugar and got a Coke can instead 😫,but aside from that I'd order again 🤗
Fork N fish make the most Delicious fish and ship is test different from others fish and ship Their fish so clean and it doesn't have strong smell Which I really love and is cooked to perfection. They are very good at what they does. Guys you should try their fish and ship you will not be disappointed 😊🥰❤
Very satisfying fish and chips with sides of mussels and sea scallops for three. Chips were tasty but lacked the crunch they could have had. Generous portions. Great friendly staff. We shall return.
