Food was absolutely amazing. The beef ribs fell off the bone without me even touching them!
And some of the best craft beers on the coast.
I found a new regular place for food and drinks and my friends love it already.
These guys know craft beer and it's obvious by the tap selection. The food - holy shit! The bao is scrum-diddly-umptious. Fresh and loaded with fresh vegetables and herbs. Paired with the beers = next level. The staff are hot. Don't drink too much and touch them inappropriately though as they know jiu jitsu. Just go there, drink all the beers and eat all the foods.
That’s exactly what Dave Rane and Gavin White, new owners of the Backbone Bar did. With both men working in the construction industry, they took the opportunity to keep the bar alive by purchasing it from former owners Chris Wormald and Ben France. Retaining Megumi, the Japanese cook who has been with the establishment from its beginnings, Backbone is still the place to celebrate good Japanese-inspired izakaya food, all made on site from top-quality local ingredients. The menu is broken into four section: Bites, Dumplings, Bao and Large Plates, ranging in price from $5 for a bowl of taro chips to $20 for katsu curry or okonomiyaki.
Friendly bar staff, very laid back environment with excellent food selection. Tip: look out for tasty deals at a fantastic price! (eg Sunday session)
On our last night on holidays, we stopped in here for an early dinner. They were very accommodating with providing us a table big enough to fit our pram and have a high chair. The beer on tap is excellent – such a good range of craft beer so my beer-snob husband was VERY happy. The service was really good too – very happy to help answer questions and seem very passionate about their beer!
The food was excellent. Perhaps a little small for the price, but delicious so I could forgive paying more. We had two types of bao (their speciality) which were absolutely excellent. The bao bun was SO soft and pillowy – you can tell it’s been made fresh and by someone who knows what they’re doing. We had a few other bits and pieces off the menu including gyoza (which were SO yum), all of which was packed full of flavour and extremely delicious. I would have loved to order more because everything we had was so tasty. Great place for excellent beer and flavour-packed food. Highly recommended.

It's hard to go past Bao especially when they're this good! The Soft Shell Crab was probably the best Bao I've had so far.
Backbone is run by a bunch of good guys with good beards and badass beer selections in a nice setting conveniently close to the beach on the highway in Tugun.
Hit them up for specials on a weekend and get sorted!
Highly recommend heading for a bizz and a bao. I will certainly be returning soon.
