Review Shanghai 1930 - Wantirna

Such a lovely Chinese restaurant hidden in the area. Service was so friendly, and the food was just great. Had the lobster noodles for $80/lb. Really delicious, good flavours. Will have to come back soon to try the other dishes.

Went there for dinner tonight. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was very tasty and plenty of it. Would highly recommend and will be going back ourselves.

Great place for tradition cooking, but the way the food is bought out is very disappointing. Mains were bought out not together, rice took at least 15 minutes after the main, and the vegetables were later still. Service was very friendly, and when the food arrived it was fantastic.

Fantastic unassuming chinese restaurant Great place to go if you are looking for truly authentic dishes, huge menu with some of the more traditional western style chinese dishes as well

We've been coming here for the past few years, and what we especially like is delicious food, great customer service and consistency. There has not been once when our food was just okay, it is always delicious! Their fresh barramundi is just superb! Been recommending this place to all my friends and will be a customer for many years to come!

Came with a party of 11. The food was great as I remembered it however once there, I remembered why I haven't gone back in a year. Food came one to two dishes at a time every 20 minutes. Took 2 hours to complete a full meal which is extremely disappointing. Imagine 11 people chopsticks at the ready. Rice with one dish to share between 11 adults.... what a joke.

This restaurant is one I would highly recommend for people who would like to get the taste of authentic Chinese food. The prices aren’t too expensive and they have a large choice. The staff were very friendly but they seemed to be understaffed. The food came out quite quickly and the taste was quite nice. The variety is large but flavours range very drastically. I would recommend the duck and vegetable dishes and maybe back out from the beef dishes because the beef wasn’t flavoured well and was a little bit chewy.

Great authentic food. Friendly staff. No loud music. Very enjoyable.

Went there on Sunday morning and there were some people eventhough it was not crowded. Menu was interesting as there are lots of dishes that i have never seen in other Chinese restaurants. I thought we would give a try for their bean noodle, chinese doughnuts with pineapple, and secret fried rice. I really enjoyed the noodle bean. I had these noodles in my home country but didn’t know the name in english and found it very pleasing that they cooked it just like back at home. It was a bit oily but has very nice taste. They could do better by giving more prawns though. For a $20 dish they gave like 2 pieces of prawns in that noodle is rather stingy. The chinese doughnuts were not bad, although quite different from the usual Chinese doughnuts i have had many times. Inside is actually doughey, which I don’t mind. The wasabi mayo and pineapple went nicely with it, and the dumpling skin that was used as their bowl was nice and crispy. They gave more prawns in this dish, although i felt like the prawns might have been undercooked. None of their dishes came out looking like the picture to be honest. And we waited forever for the fried rice. We literally finished eating already when the fried rice came. And while the fried rice was unique and not tasting bad, the amount of oil was just beyond belief. Like I know chinese food tends to be oily but this is crazy. You can see it on the spoon, the oil was like pooling. So that was a big letdown. Maybe we would come back for the noodle, but definitely reluctant as that fried rice oil was just a disgrace.

It's time to give this establishment a good rating and a fair go. Current rating is 2.8 and wholly undeserved.

Shanghai 1930 came into this location on the closure of Nelson 382 which had been here for very many years. Despite valiant attempts it could not keep up with the changing demographics.

When Shanghai 1930 opened, all they did was change the lighting a bit and add a few flat screen TV's for the Asian banquet crowd which was where we had dinner this evening. There remains the small cosy booths that can sit up to 6 or so in a degree of isolation you can't find anywhere else in the wider area.

We as a family have been here 4 times now since they opened, each time for significant occasions and we've never ever been dissatisfied. When my son chose Shanghai 1930 for his 21st birthday dinner, I was really pleased.

The cuisine is Shangainese.

Remember that.

Shangainese. If you go to Shanghai, there is a lot more variety, for sure. What you will find at Shanghai 1930 is a small selection of dishes that are faithfully reproduced in the Shangainese style. There are no Century eggs and no Stinky Tofu (at least not on our menu) but the dishes available, you will certainly find in Shanghai and they are presented the same, so don't complain your crispy chicken is cold because it's been done that way in Shanghai since way before 1930.

If you look back in the reviews for this restaurant, you will see the first one which was terrible. I had to defend this one... Go back and read it and I hope you see why. I maintain though, the owners do not know me and they didn't know I was coming this night.

Probably the most important thing to know is that this restaurant is frequented by people who know what good Shangainese food is. These same people probably don't care about writing good reviews or giving any care whatsoever a Zomato rating.

I care though.

And if you care too, then come here for a nice dinner of authentic Shangainese cuisine and genuinely good service.

I loved our waiter... We asked for some forks and spoons for some of our party not so familiar with Chopsticks.. He called them "Backup"... And he was a delight all evening.

Value?

Hell Yes. 11 big people. $400 including a lot of drinks for some really exceptional food in a wonderful dining environment that is a bit eclectic but definitely works.

Make a booking. Interact with the staff and enjoy yourselves.

You might learn something too.

I'll be making another booking soon. Just gotta invent an occasion!

Cheers!

Tried this place for the first time last night. Overall, the food was just ok... We ordered a cold entree - shanghai style bran dough... for some reason they served it hot rather than cold, I thought this ruined the dish as it dried up. They also didn't ask whether we wanted it hot or cold. We also tried the xiao long bao and the pan fried mini pork buns, both of which were good and had a good pork/soup/bun ratio. The braised red pork in pot was a little disappointing... although we knew it was going to be pork belly, at least 1/2 the pot was just pieces of pure fat with no meat attached. The biggest let down for us was the "1/2 crispy duck". Not only was it not crispy but it felt like they had just microwaved 1/2 a duck and then sprinkled some random crispy ??cereal on top. The service and atmosphere were good. Overall, we will give this place a second chance sometime in the future but we will most likely try other things on their menu.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the authentic Shanghainese food! If you love Chinese/Shanghainese food, a clean, appealing and comfortable ambience and free parking you would love this restaurant too.

We totally enjoyed the traditional Shanghainese food and seafood dishes! The dishes were generous in portion and the seafood was really fresh. My family also loved the vegetarian dishes. The restaurant ambience is great too for couples or family to enjoy a great meal. Staff are friendly and attentive and there are plenty of free parking at the premises. Definitely recommend it to anyone who loves Shanghainese cuisine and seafood or just want to have a great meal at a nice restaurant!
Hello World!
This is a shanghainese restaurant in Far East suburb. Traditionally a shanghainese dinner comes up with cold dishes, hot dishes, soup and fruit/sweet. All dishes tasted close to authentic shanghainese food, but personally they were a little bit too oily for me. Worth of mention is: the cold dish Kaofu (stir fried gluten/barn, black fungi, peanut with soy sauce); for hot dishes: the mud crab with noodle, and the deep fried fish with tomato flavoured sauce and pine nuts on it. Service was adequate!

After being told the restaurant was very nice we booked in for dinner with friends
After taking the order for drinks and entree we waited and waited, 1 hr later we were still waiting for order
Drinks came entree came and eventually mains arrived with no rice or noodles after eating half the main meals we had to ask for rice & noodles
My Husbands meal was all fat and we advised the waiter we would not be paying for it, on saying that my meal was very nice but our noodles did not come out
When waitress noticed the noodles had not arrived we told her not to bother
But unfortunately we will not be recommending this restaurant to any other friends

Had dinner today with 6 people.... Well where do I start.... Cold crispy chicken, tough pork ribs that are still in my teeth. The waiter did not know what a Gin and Tonic was then i waited an hour for it. My friends chilli beef was 50% fat. The service was crap to say the least. I will never visit again.
