It's time to give this establishment a good rating and a fair go. Current rating is 2.8 and wholly undeserved.
Shanghai 1930 came into this location on the closure of Nelson 382 which had been here for very many years. Despite valiant attempts it could not keep up with the changing demographics.
When Shanghai 1930 opened, all they did was change the lighting a bit and add a few flat screen TV's for the Asian banquet crowd which was where we had dinner this evening. There remains the small cosy booths that can sit up to 6 or so in a degree of isolation you can't find anywhere else in the wider area.
We as a family have been here 4 times now since they opened, each time for significant occasions and we've never ever been dissatisfied. When my son chose Shanghai 1930 for his 21st birthday dinner, I was really pleased.
The cuisine is Shangainese.
Remember that.
Shangainese. If you go to Shanghai, there is a lot more variety, for sure. What you will find at Shanghai 1930 is a small selection of dishes that are faithfully reproduced in the Shangainese style. There are no Century eggs and no Stinky Tofu (at least not on our menu) but the dishes available, you will certainly find in Shanghai and they are presented the same, so don't complain your crispy chicken is cold because it's been done that way in Shanghai since way before 1930.
If you look back in the reviews for this restaurant, you will see the first one which was terrible. I had to defend this one... Go back and read it and I hope you see why. I maintain though, the owners do not know me and they didn't know I was coming this night.
Probably the most important thing to know is that this restaurant is frequented by people who know what good Shangainese food is. These same people probably don't care about writing good reviews or giving any care whatsoever a Zomato rating.
I care though.
And if you care too, then come here for a nice dinner of authentic Shangainese cuisine and genuinely good service.
I loved our waiter... We asked for some forks and spoons for some of our party not so familiar with Chopsticks.. He called them "Backup"... And he was a delight all evening.
Value?
Hell Yes. 11 big people. $400 including a lot of drinks for some really exceptional food in a wonderful dining environment that is a bit eclectic but definitely works.
Make a booking. Interact with the staff and enjoy yourselves.
You might learn something too.
I'll be making another booking soon. Just gotta invent an occasion!
Cheers!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the authentic Shanghainese food! If you love Chinese/Shanghainese food, a clean, appealing and comfortable ambience and free parking you would love this restaurant too.
We totally enjoyed the traditional Shanghainese food and seafood dishes! The dishes were generous in portion and the seafood was really fresh. My family also loved the vegetarian dishes. The restaurant ambience is great too for couples or family to enjoy a great meal. Staff are friendly and attentive and there are plenty of free parking at the premises. Definitely recommend it to anyone who loves Shanghainese cuisine and seafood or just want to have a great meal at a nice restaurant!
This is a shanghainese restaurant in Far East suburb. Traditionally a shanghainese dinner comes up with cold dishes, hot dishes, soup and fruit/sweet. All dishes tasted close to authentic shanghainese food, but personally they were a little bit too oily for me. Worth of mention is: the cold dish Kaofu (stir fried gluten/barn, black fungi, peanut with soy sauce); for hot dishes: the mud crab with noodle, and the deep fried fish with tomato flavoured sauce and pine nuts on it. Service was adequate!
Such a lovely Chinese restaurant hidden in the area. Service was so friendly, and the food was just great. Had the lobster noodles for $80/lb. Really delicious, good flavours. Will have to come back soon to try the other dishes.
Went there for dinner tonight. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was very tasty and plenty of it. Would highly recommend and will be going back ourselves.
Fantastic unassuming chinese restaurant
Great place to go if you are looking for truly authentic dishes, huge menu with some of the more traditional western style chinese dishes as well
This restaurant is one I would highly recommend for people who would like to get the taste of authentic Chinese food. The prices aren’t too expensive and they have a large choice. The staff were very friendly but they seemed to be understaffed. The food came out quite quickly and the taste was quite nice. The variety is large but flavours range very drastically. I would recommend the duck and vegetable dishes and maybe back out from the beef dishes because the beef wasn’t flavoured well and was a little bit chewy.
Great authentic food. Friendly staff. No loud music. Very enjoyable.
