Review Red Door Yum Cha - Windsor

For the Love of Food
Red Door Yum Cha is an unassuming restaurant hidden in a street in Windsor but the interior is very different to what you see on the outside. Decked out with oriental decor and a variety of different seating options. It was reminiscent of a Chinese tea house. We were keen to eat as many dumplings as our stomachs could take but nothing wowed us here, making us feel like we hadn’t really satisfied our cravings yet. We ordered: 🐷 BBQ Pork Bun 🦞 Lobster, Prawn & Scallop Dumplings 🦐 Pork & Prawn Sui Mai 🥟 Sharkfin Wonton 🦆 Duck Bean Curd Wrap 🐓 Shanghai Chicken Soup Dumplings 🐔 Chicken Sui Mai Definitely not the best assortment of dumplings I’ve had but also not the worst. We found everything to be pretty average in terms of both quality and flavour. We were also confused by the Shanghai Chicken soup dumplings because there was no soup whatsoever 😕 Service was okay, we didn’t really have much interaction with them besides taking our orders and serving our food. Can’t say I’ll be back in a rush.

Good food, nice spread on the meat options. Small on the portion sizes but that is standard with such places. Loved the decor and ambiance of the place. Friendly staff and decent service times makes the place worth a visit.

That spring rolls is fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 This whole place is too cute to be true Definitely will come back 😀

Excellent venue, great food , well worth visiting

Not one to usually review but this experience truly deserves it.. picture this. Mothers Day, the restaurant haranguing you to pre order your meal.. reading reviews of fantastic food. WELL how much of a let down. Disappointed does not even describe how sad these two hours were… Service? Poor. Why are all of the wait staff so disinterested in being there.. why are they wearing sweats that one would wear to the gym? How it is that we could be asked to preorder and the meals be so slow to arrive.. I am talking an hour into our sitting that a handful (not all) of our dumplings arrive and then (for a party of two) only one main arrives. To quote my mother, “I have never waited so long for this kind of meal.” It goes without saying that mum and I left without her receiving her meal. Food was very average.. probably 3/10. Honestly the way they served the dumplings were so out of line with Asian hospitality. The only thing I can compliment this restaurant on is their attempt at being “Chinese” - it feels like a gimmick. If you want some nice Instagram photos but don’t care about the quality of food or service this place could be cool I guess

I loved the place and I think it was very high quality food but the catch is that it was the first time I was having Yum Cha in this way. Apparently it's usually served on a tray which is moved around in the restaurant but here we had to order from a menu... My friend thought this was a big deal but it didn't bother me one bit. The atmosphere was amazing and they have a few really nice cabin/bed style seating arrangements which you can reserve in advance. Staff appeared casual backpacker tourist type but both were very nice and friendly... Make sure you check them out, the location is hidden so not easy to see from Chapel Street.

One of the worst meals I’ve ever had. We ordered the eat me and left more than half of it behind as it was that bad. There seemed to be only one person running the whole restaurant (cooking and serving) so we were positive everything we were eating was just being heated up from a packet. When we told the guy running the place he was surprised to get such a bad review and only took the drinks off the tab even though we couldn’t finish what we ordered. Would never go back!!!!!!!

Wow! Sam amazing food. I loved it. Elliot, you're cooking is amazing. Scout, your sharkoutery board is impeccable. Amani, you brought me water quick and prompt. Amazing. Sophisticated. I'm bringing my children here when I have them in 2054. Thankyou Sam 5 stars

If you don't get food poisoning after eating here, thank your lucky stars. And check your bill as we were charged for wine we didn't order and food they forgot to serve. I'm confident the wine was watered down, and the food was taken out of one of those supermarket waste bins. I'm only giving it one star for the entertaining furniture. Simply dreadful service, simply ordinary food.

My bill totalled $183... the owner Sam charged me $1800, over drafted my account, and instead of apologising accused me of entering in digits incorrectly. The ordeal to get a refund has been disgusting, with rude messages from the owner back and forth with still not a cent to be returned to my account!! Horrible staff and horrible experience!!

Not your typical yum Cha with the trolley carts. It was more of a boutique experience with a very selected menu. The food was good with very clean flavours and highly recommend the spicy green tea noodles and the pork and prawn siomay. The internal decor transport you into old china town with nice worned antique furnishings.
Heather Kaye
Really enjoyed the ambience of this restaurant. To be seated and surrounded by Chinese antiquities was a real privilege. The dumplings were amazing and the service prompt and friendly. Will recommend to friends.

Had a fabulous night at Red door. Loved the atmosphere, the food and the friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Great service and delicious food. The servings aren't huge, but they're excellent quality and far more filling than you would expect. We got take away and fed 3 adults, a teenager and two children, with food left over. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Melbourne.

Amazing food. Great family day out. Celebrating my beautiful sisters birthday and mothers day. Will be back for sure.

Having coeliac disease I was so very excited to be able to eat dumplings. It was a shame that the young woman who greeted us and waited the table was far from welcoming. The dumplings were nice but it is not likely that we will be back for a second visit.

As soon as I walked in thru the front door I was transported. The furniture, decor and the fabulous dumplings ... I'll definitely be back.

Very impress with decor and food. Will go back again.

This is my favourite restaurant in Melb. Why? Because they cater for Gluten Free with the most delicious GF rice flour dumplings EVER. The question always is- how many can I fit in my stomach!!? LOVE
Jill Eva
Best dumplings in melbourne! Such a fun and relaxed place to have a meal. We loved all the gluten free options and the mixed vegetables. Definitely coming back!
Duca Aldridge
Had an excellent New Years dinner, dumplings perfection as always. Thanks for a great night ☺️👍🏻
Shauna Lye
Such a treat for my coeliac husband, everything was absolutely delicious.

Ate our first yum cha in Melbourne here as it seemed to have decent reviews but after visiting it was clearly overpriced and not fresh. The prawn hargows were frozen ones exactly same size and shape and taste as ones you can get from costco or the chinese grocer. Bbq pork bun was also frozen and steamed. Charged $9 for 3 dumplings which is preposterous and since we were hungry and had high hopes we ordered many dishes to start but when they came it was all very disappointing. Would not recommend for anyone who enjoys traditional yumcha. We ended up spending $80 for 2 people and left the place hungry and unsatisfied. Will never visit again.

Came here for dinner Saturday night- was very rushed due to the 75min reservation time slot. Nice dumplings with a lot to choose from. Beef & black bean was very disappointing. Charming venue. Dumplings quite expensive.
Steven Haas
Great food, great staff, great atmosphere, coming back for sure. Best yum cha I’ve had in ages
Rebecca Balsim
Dumplings were good. Tasty but definitely not the most amazing dumplings I’ve ever had - possibly because hey were gluten free so the outside does taste different to ones that are not.

Fillings were good though!
Eating Away Melbourne
Intersting setup, I know it is a antique furniture store or some sort but the smell of that is a bit too strong, doesn't smell like a restaurant..

It was quiet at the start of the night then got busier later on. Food was in quite small portion which is understandable because it is yumcha. Ordered quite a few items to share between all. They were nice but nothing too outstanding. Compare to the dumpling places in China town and yumcha places on exhibition street this feels lacking a bit.. Price is quite expensing as well compare to others. Service was quite fast and friendly!

Me and my friend came here at Tuesday night when it having few tables.
The decoration was very fancy, we sit on a Chinese style bed. There were many special Chinese furnitures.
We ordered a cocktail, it presented with a tea pot. It was weird but tasted fantastic.
Beancurd duck wrap and prawn dumplings were average.
The Hong Shao Rou was tender, but the meat it cooked in very dark color and with thin layer fat. I would prefer it presents in light color and more fat.
The most unsatisfied was the steam rice, it was chewy and undercooked.
It was a good place to visit generally.

Tucked away down a nondescript lane way it has been described as the hidden gem of the area (which is a completely over used term to describe quaint little food outlets that are actually pretty good). Having got that out the system, that’s exactly what Red Door is, a quaint Asian eatery that pushes out great food.

A really enjoyable meal. Red Door has old world charm about it and the food was delicious. Tried a variety of dumpling dishes, the pork buns and steamed broccoli and all were excellent. My new favourite place for dumplings in Melbourne.
Caroline Haddad
stop it!!! amazingly fresh & delicious yum cha.. there were only 4 of us - but I heard the kitchen sizzling away.. (& the loveliest staff).. superb pork soup dumpling btw & a brilliant soundtrack!

We had a wonderful lunch for my mothers 80th Birthday in the private room. Staff are super friendly, and the food is awesome. Highly recommended!

Having heard a lot about Red Door, I was keen to come and check it out. I booked a table for myself and three friends for Saturday night and off we went.
Unlike all the new restaurants that have popped up in Windsor over the years, Red Door has an older and original feel to it. If you are looking for funky/modern asian you will not find it here. They have stayed true to their roots and strengths offering up a delicious selection of dumplings set in a traditional setting. The space is unique and quite special. It was very busy when we went (lots of bigger groups) which we were told by a waitress was popular. Food took a little longer to come out at times, but the waitress acknowledged and apologised and we were happy with that. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the owner (Sam?) who served us sporadically throughout our meal was great.
I noticed he was following up with all the tables on departure which I thought was a nice touch on a particularly busy night. Rounding up, we all loved the food and ambience and would recommend. Keen to come back to enjoy the space for a quieter midweek dinner.

The highlight would be the black sesame ice cream and the rosewood furniture. Good if you have never eaten asian food before. There is better yum cha.
Brad Richardson
Extremely poor service by a rude Scottish girl who was supposed to be in charge for the night, who would not accept any blame for poor service and bland food and 2.5hrs to deliver a banquet that left us hungry. We used to love this place.
Lucas Murtagh
What a hidden gem. The interior is truly unique and Sam the owner makes you feel right at home. We went for lunch. Favourites were the scallop and lobster dumplings and the pork and prawn spring rolls. Don't forget the plate of greens! Love to try this place at night too.

One of the most ordinary dining experiences I’ve had South of the river.
The reviews were stellar so was expecting more.
We arrived right on 6pm but the door was Iocked. A staff member open up about 6:10
The venue is dark and humid and smelt like a building that had been closed up for an extended period of time.
The dumplings were similar quality to those you buy at the supermarket and reheat at home.
Except they were $13 for 5.
We tried three dumpling combos and then gave up and tried a main which was even more disappointing.
There are so many great places to eat in the area. Unfortunately this isn’t one of them
Brad Partridge
Best Dumplings in Windsor!! We love coming here whenever the occasion calls and always leave happy and satisfied. The menu is varied and tasty and they even have a great little wine list!
If you are part of a larger group there is the option to do a set menu which takes the hassle out of ordering and consists of their best dishes and crowd favourites.
The service is friendly and prompt and great value for money!
An excellent place for a hot date or catch up with friends, these guys have all their bases covered!
Highly recommended - I will be back!

The best dumplings in Melbourne. I come here for the food and I’m never disappointed.
Relaxed, yet attentive staff. Lovely authentic decor. Great wine list, but what’s also a bonus is it’s BYO wine! I love coming here, I’m a repeat customer, and have been for years. See you soon RD!

Ten years in and for whatever reason, Red Door seems to have been cast off as the unassuming neighbor of it’s much more heralded Windsor inhabitants. Tucked away down a nondescript lane way it has been described as the hidden gem of the area (which is a completely over used term to describe quaint little food outlets that are actually pretty good). Having got that out the system, that’s exactly what Red Door is, a quaint Asian eatery that pushes out great food.

Came here for a casual mid-week double date last week. The restaurant was quiet, we were served quickly and ordered several dishes between the four of us. I was the only person who hadn't been before and after hearing plenty about the place was keen to see if it lived up to its reputation. I found that the dishes were quite inconsistent. Some dishes were too salty, others under seasoned and some bland. I also find that dumpling shouldn't need to be drenched in chilli oil or soy sauce to give it flavour (it should be flavoursome on its own accord and be enhanced by a dip in some sauce) - which I unfortunately found to be the case here.

The only dishes that I felt had complex flavours were the Duck Beancurd Wraps and the Beef Lemongrass Jiao Zi. I was quite disappointed with the BBQ Pork Baos which I didn't think quite achieved that perfect balance of sweet and salty with abit of smoked charr (the way it should be).

BYO option is a major bonus - I'd still give it another shot.
Jenny Hetherington
I’ve been many times, the venue is lovely! The food is gorgeous especially the dumplings, great value for money and always great service, very accommodating and they have a BYO wine option
Food For Thought
Interesting decor to have yum cha and the ambience was similar to being in an antique oriental furniture store. Unlike the noisy trolley experience you usually would get in a chinese restaurant, you get to order the yum cha dishes on a menu in peace. Being asian, I'm very particular re. freshness of my yum cha dishes. The quality of the yum cha really surprised me! The chicken dumplings, the beancurd pork and prawn rolls, mixed vegetables in oyster sauce are highly recommended. Overall, we had a lovely experience and the service staff was efficient and friendly.

I looked forward to dining at this place, but left a tad disappointed from the hype. The antique oriental style decor is amazing compared to other restaurants, so appreciate the mystique theme it provides.
The restaurant appears to lack senior/experienced wait staff, there are gaps with the service and handling large groups. Our large group had abnormal wait times, most of us finished our mains, whilst others were still waiting for theirs, which would have been approx 2 hours. We had to chase on these, and their desserts from the Set menu option.
My braised beef hotpot was served in a plain medium bowl. Presentation was lost, I expected it to be served n a crockery style hotpot, or at least in a nicer serving dish. "Mixed veges" was a couple sprouts of broccoli, in which they topped up after raising this to their attention. Dish was $24, I felt it was worth half. The beef was tender, in a thick tasty gravy which tasted a bit western, and it was chopped in mini bits, so felt it was childs food. Other diner's mains did not look appetizing either, so no food envy there.

I'm not sure if the kitchen is run by authentic chefs, the cuisine standard is below par compared to other asian restaurants. Didnt get to try their dumplings, so hope those compensate the mains and service.
Disappointed it missed expectations on authentic taste.

Why does Red Door get a 3.9 over all rating on Zomato? I honestly don’t know. Is it because of the decor? If so, yes the venue is lovely. The service and food? Not so great.

There was 17 of us, so quite a large group and it was appreciated that some of us could do the set menu and others could just order from the normal menu. Unfortunately those who ordered from the set menu had to wait such a long time for their food! I never realised it would take so long to serve scoops of ice cream! We got there at 6:30pm and didn’t leave the venue until after 9:30pm. That’s crazy!

My friend and I ordered dumplings so we got our food first and had to wait a long time for everyone else to be served.... mains also took a while so for those who ordered mains had to wait a while. Those on the set menu had to wait the longest.

Paying the bill was difficult because we didn’t get a print out of the bill instead it was hand written! We couldn’t understand some of the handwriting!

I wouldn’t return. Not value for money. There are dumpling places that are more authentic, that have larger servings that you can go to!

Ambience and decor are very nice and felt like it just stepped out of a Chinese period flick. The food was very ordinary, for the same price you can find better elsewhere. While the lobster, scallop, prawns dumpling and spring onion pancake were full of flavor, several others like the Sui Mai tasted like they were heated up instead of prepared. Overall a bit lackluster, the dumplings not having that piping hotness, soft but lightly chewy skin they should have it steamed properly.

Birdy
I love this place! The decor is quirky but I like it.
I have eaten here a least 10 times and I will continue to keep going back. The quality and taste of the food never varies.
The siu mai and chicken patties are a regular on my order.
Staff are friendly and attentive.
Not a real cheap dining experience but well with the prices you pay.

Went for a celebration, staff where rude and not attentive what so ever. We payed $35 per person, there was 8 people in total and for $35 each u get 8 types of dumplings, 2 bowels between small/medium size and 2 very small bowels of rice with a baby scoop of ice cream, would not surgery for a celebration maybe just for 2-4 people and do not let them choose
LAC
Love the atmosphere and cool antique furniture.

The food was good, but nothing special about it.
Really enjoyed the steamed buns and the dumplings :)
Soba noodles were a bit plain

The food is great, I love coming here. Friendly staff and fast service. The ambiance is chill as well, good place to come to with more than 4 people but also a good date night spot.

Felt like I was in mrs Kim's from Gilmore girls but in a good way! :-) This antique shop styled dumpling house was exactly what was needed on a friday night after work! U can purchase the some of the antiques too! The food service was prompt and delicious:-)

I discovered this gluten free hidden gem a couple of weeks ago. Prior to eating at Red Door I hadn't had dumplings in years, so finding gluten free dumplings that didn't have a heavy flour taste was a massive surprise.
I ate the Lobster, Pawn & Scollop Dumplings and the Chicken Chive & Prawn Dumplings which went perfectly with the chilli paste - GF Soy sauce would have made the Dumplings just that bit better!
Suits private dining best, but still caters for larger groups. Intimate surrounds.

I'm low-key obsessed with this place yall.
The decor is sleek but quirky, and dark enough to make it kinda magical and weird, which also ensures your tinder date looks better than he actually is.
The food tho. HELLO, and OH MY GOD, pork dumplings. And the aniseed pork belly. And who craves bok choi like ever? YOU WILL, after you try theirs. It was DAMN good, and I'm totes a fan. Will absolutely go back when i can carb-load again, but till then... best $70 x 2 ever spent in my LIFE.
Love this place. Come here regularly as I'm allergic to wheat and they cater to me PERFECTLY. Staff are always very helpful and accommodating. Highly recommended.

Nice place, only had a light lunch but really good, definitely want to try for a evening meal, a good selection of food and beers, found the price to be really reasonable. Staff friendly and attentive.
Ayten Ozder
The service was very slow and the restaurant was only half full. We had to ask three times for our drink order, which eventually arrived after we finished our meal. We waited 30 mins for our last dish. Very ordinary
Trevor Johnston
This place is fantastic - the care they have taken to give the place an authentic ambiance is great. There is no air conditioning either so on a hot night you leave feeling like you really have spent an hour or two in South East Asia.

We sat at the bed table and enjoyed a selection of dumplings and the chairman Mao. The chairman Mao was good but not our favourite dish – the seafood dumplings (particularly the lobster, prawn and scallop – the menu’s not lying! It is a must!) were our favourite.

This place gets real points for a clear menu that you understand what you might want to order (in English). I find often Asian restaurants will have a long menu that doesn’t describe the dish in any detail and so you end up ordering things that you really don’t understand what you are ordering – that’s not the case here.

Reasonably priced also – we will be back!
Leah
The decor is so great! Definitely a cool place to bring friends to. Service is good and food is fine. If you come you need to try sitting on the bed.
Foodie Tuesday
The dumplings were light and delicate. The chilli beef was a real disappointment. We were expecting a stir fry or something similar but received a stew-like dish, full of pepper and no chilli in sight. The look of the beef was not very appetising. All dishes were totally overpriced. We won’t be returning.

This hidden gem in Windsor has unique theme for its restaurant. There are some seats with cushion on top of it, so you need to take off your shoes and sit cross-legged (it's like Japanese traditional sitting). I personally think this is very cozy and comfortable. The food were okay, but what stands out the most to me is the lobster, prawn & scallop dumpling. The service was very friendly and attentive, except that it took quite long for the food to come.
Spunk_a_rooney
I actually thought Red Door was a Yum Cha restaurant with actual trollies but when we entered I was a pretty funky looking place with interesting décor but no trollies. We were greeted by a lovely waitress and given menus. We decided to order spring rolls, dumplings, chilli beef dish and steamed rice. The price was about $9.00 for a serving which was about $3.00 per spring roll which is reasonable. The prawn spring rolls were very tasty and the dumplings we ordered were nice. The beef dish we ordered looked like a gluggy casserole and not very nice and that was the only dish that disappointed. Not only did it not look good but didn't taste good.
Christine Robinson
Great GF dumplings! Came here with my coeliac mate for lunch recently, and both of us were elated to eat dumplings! (I think it had been almost a decade since either of us had them!) Lovely glass of wine in accompaniment, quiet day in there, so we really enjoyed the peace, the antiques and of course, the food!

Will certainly return!
Rnedovic
Fathers Day! The very WORST MOST DISAPPOINTING food ever had anywhere. Globby mess of sticky slimey mean food. A total disgrace for any self respecting restaurant owner to serve such terrible food. Never ever returning.
Jordan Williams
Great place, interesting fit out with different types of seating. Great selection of yum cha, everything i've tried delivers on taste, perfect place for a casual family dinner or lunch.
Kris Fitch
Excellent little hidden gem just off Windsor!!!! My girlfriend and I went here on a Tuesday night loved the food the atmosphere and especially the the decor!!! The only criticism is that their share plate should be 4 instead of 3 😂
TK
Great spot for a casual catch up with friends. Plenty of gluten free dumpling options that were just as good, if not better than regular ones. I would definitely go back for the lobster dumplings alone, however, the $35 feed me option was a little overpriced for what we got.
Nathan
Really like this place, always have great dumplings and it is super cosy with the decor. If you get lucky and it's a little quiet, there are large beds to eat on which is a great change from the norm. Couple this with a cocktail in a teacup and what's not to love?! Definitely recommend giving it a go.
Keeley
Great place. Love the decor. Ordered gluten free dumplings and they were fabulous. And they had gluten free soy sauce.
Unfortunately dumplings and Chinese broccoli were the only gf things on the menu but the staff were great at pointing out what could eat. We will be back.
Steve H
We enjoyed a lovely evening here with a very special couple of friends and enjoyed a variety of great tasting dumplings and freshly prepared/cooked buns (best buns I've personally ever tried). The vine rice was a brilliant side-dish too.

Service provided throughout the night was attentive, friendly and genuine, with a true rapport developing between the staff and clients. This venue is a must visit, and we'd all recommend to arrive nice and early since the noise level does rise once more parties arrive. Perfect for a great catchup with special someone's!!

A small warning that once you start ordering, you'll probably keep ordering, and the total will add up fast, which can make for a pricey evening. But the quality of food is certainly worth it.

P.S. Be sure to try out "Lucky Beer", which is presented in an awesome Buddha bottle - a nice light tasting beer with a very smooth aftertaste. The 'Apple Turnover' and 'Pimms Spritz' we're both refreshing and delightful, according to the ladies amongst the party. :)

All experiences here have been good and we have been close to 10 times.
Service here is good, staff tend to leave you be but are attentive if you need them.
Food is high end A la carte yum Cha, mostly dumplings but also larger dishes such as braised pork belly.
My favourite dishes are dumplings, namely the peanut chicken, northern chive and prawn and really all the seafood dumplings. Barbeque pork buns here have a refinement lacking in most other yum Cha restaurants in Melbourne. The lotus leaf encased rice is also delicious.
The restaurant itself is gorgeous with antique Chinese furniture here and there and including the seating arrangements for patrons who can be seated either at a table with chairs or choose from 3 futon bed seating arrangements (where you kneel). My description really isn't doing it justice. Perfect suggestion for a first date if you want your date to be impressed with your local foodie prowess.
Sean Griffiths
Service and Environment good (very cool space). Dumplings were very average. Its a shame because if they served good dumplings people would flock to this place. I'm 100% sure some of them were just frozen. The spring rolls were pretty good however.

If I go back it will be to only eat spring rolls and drink wine.
Rick Petropoulos
We had a booking for 30 at a 60th were we paid $35 per person for a set menu. The food was decent but the service was very ordinary. What really annoyed me was when we told them that we don't eat beef, as the main and some of the dumplings were beef they informed us that we would have to order of the menu and be charged for it. In the end my partner and I ate about 6 dumplings each, a spring roll, Bok Choi and broccoli and a small bowl of rice shared between 4 people. I just felt they could've been a bit more flexible considering we got nowhere near $70 value and it's not like they weren't serving other customers and couldn't have whipped up something. Our table had 30 people x $35 each plus drinks etc. Pretty chatty/greedy. Customer service, flexibility, goes a long way. Won't be rushing back there again.

Started strong then got the wobbles then the wheels fell off. The dumplings were good but the beef main was like a school canteen, more Eastern European than Chinese if you ask me
Frank Bischoff
This is delightful. The antique furniture and the slightly dilapidated
Chinese brothel look, you expect Shanghai Mama to come around the corner and
fix you up. I wanted to sit in one of those Canopy bed constructions but was
placed at a normal café table. It’s like stepping into China 100 years ago.
Very cute. The service is a little tentative and shy, but not without charm and
care. The tea selection is not bad, the range of dim-sums is limited but of
high quality, I in particular recommend the dessert dumplings, the “snowballs” and the "custard and red bean paste buns" are
reason enough to come back. I could imagine this could become a regular haunt
for me.

Great decor- we went at night and had the banquet- v yummy. So much better than your suburban dumpling place. Park behind the paint spot.👍
Carol Sheldon
Have been to Red door at night and it was super tasty and such a quirky setup (in a nice way) It truly is sitting in a Chinese antiques shop with a myriad of seating options! Went today for lunch with two of my favorite people 😊 One that was super excited as Red door has GF dumplings 👏. We ordered a selection of GF dumplings and they were all super tasty and filling! I would highly recommend Red door to any poor Coeliac people that are really hankering for dumplings and to those that are not! The difference was very minimal , we were all totally sated 😊😀 We will return.
Food Baby
This isn't your inner city/outer suburban arcade located dumplings house with soda bottles stacked against the walls and plastic chairs, producing abundant flow of cheap dumplings from a cramped kitchen. The ambience and prices are decidedly more upmarket, but unfortunately the flavours aren't. I wanted to find a dish that really stood out, and the only one that did was the spring onion cake. There were a few timing issues as well, with the dishes coming out.
Lillian Zhang
Pretty unimpressed with the food. The atmosphere might decieve you into thinking the quality of the food is good. We ordered a mix of dumplings and mains and the majority were lacking in authentic flavours and freshness. Would not be coming here again. Also its a bit pricey for dumplings. For the price you pay you can go to much better Chinese restaurants in the area.
Hungry
This place is a hidden secret. Hidden off chapel street this is definitely a locals place. I've been here many times and love it time and time again. Only disappointment is the limited wine list. Otherwise amazing dumplings!
Lawrence Ip
Traditional Dim Sum, great service. The service Sam provides is genuine and prompt. Open seven days a week, both lunch and dinner. Highly recommended!
Andrew Connolly
Red door is a cool little place just off Chapel with a quirky furnishings as it double as a antiques dealer. The food, although very tasty was rather pricey for dumplings.

Did not enjoy my experience here at all. Food is average, however decently priced. Service was absolutely terrible, in particular from who I assume to be the manager. He made me and my friends feel extremely uncomfortable. I am not an unreasonable customer and working in hospitality I try to be understanding but this man was blatantly rude, and when leaving the restaurant my friends told me he actually rolled his eyes at me when I was adding up my bill. Will never be returning here again.
RedShoes
This was always a favourite but not sure if it might have changed hands - most recent experience the staff were rude and the dumplings not up to their usual deliciousness.
Phoeuro
Pathetic!! Terrible experience. We were not greeted or acknowledged when we walked in, had to holler at the waiter after 45 minutes. We were forced to have a set menu when we wanted to order off the menu, which was a rip off for the size.. Then my party was made to feel uncomfortable when we had certain dietary requirements.
Service was appalling.
Portions were extremely small (3 tiny bowls of rice/meat for 13 people) and of poor quality. There were also a lack of plates.
Highly regrettable.

Nothing to write home about. Nice, spacious surroundings but not particularly authentic Chinese dishes. Waiter forgot part of our order. They could use some good atmospheric music.
Fish
Some of the best dumplings in Melbourne without a doubt. It is a relaxing setting with traditional Chinese music playing and decor that is authentic antique quality. We sat in one of the day beds and worked out way through the prawn and crab dumplings, beef Sui mai, pork and Chive dumpling and of course the Sticky pork buns. All the food was fresh and we loved it. Sitting back with a green tea was such a relaxing yum Cha lunch on a Saturday arvo.
Top joint!
Asian don't go there. First off let start with what I like, basically only the interior design of the place.

Now what I don't like:
If you are like me and like the authentic yum cha will trolley going around with your food and having 10 dishes at your table at once.....THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU.

Services was slow, food came out 5 min after one another and it expensive.
We had 10 dishes and that was 100 bucks....If the experience was great I don't mind paying a bit more but it was not great.
100 Bucks and we weren't full and we went to get burgers after that........

The waiter comes with out food walk pass our table and drop the food on the corner of our table and mumble "$%^&#%" and walk off. didn't stop and walk pass really fast. I don't know what so great about this place but ...it bad....bad enough for me to write this review which is my first.

Really great service and response from owners when booking, cancelling then rebooking a party of 10. Nothing was too much trouble and the food and atmosphere was really spot. Thank you Simon.

Likes it! Food was deliciou.... Likes it!
Food was delicious, fun, groovy environment. Service was great and good came out pretty quickly. Definitely coming back here! It's a must try

Dropping Standards. I've eaten at this place regularly over the last two or so years and have ways really enjoyed it. The food has always been of a high standard. However, last night was disappointing. The waitress had no clue what she was doing and bought us the wrong wine as well as not ordering things we asked for. The soup dumplings were so dry with absolutely no soup in them that we thought that we didn't receive them! When we went to pay we advised we didn't get the soup dumplings we were met with the rude explanation of 'why did you eat them if you didn't like them?' Well, we weren't aware it was them, we thought it was the jao xi. Then told 'well you are ahead then, there has been no jao xi charged on here'. No we are not ahead because we did not get them!
Very frustrating and no way to speak to customers. The service here has always been slow but really, this was rude and if the soup dumplings are so dry, why call them soup dumplings?

Gluten Free Galore. So great to go to a restaurant were you can freely order off the menu, with so many GF options. Highly recommend. The service was a little slow, but the place was pretty packed, so I guess they were under the pump. Will definitely be back.

YUM!!!!! Definately going back next Friday night. Sat in the Castle and ate a delicious variety of dumplings (chosen by the staff) and the chili beef was sensational.
Zoe
Amazing bean curd and delicious prawn dumplings. Friendly staff and very affordable. Look forward to getting back to Red Door next week!!!

REALLY LOVED IT. Just got home from having dinner at Red Door. A lot of my friends had been talking about this place and I was eager to go see what it was all about. Fun dining, delicious food and really quirky Chinese decor. It's an older warehouse style of restaurant, felt very authentic. I sat in one of the bed seats with two mates, we bought some nice wine along (byo was only $6!) and let our waiter pretty much order for us. It was fantastic. Food was fresh and full of flavor. Dumplings were the best I probably had. Really looking forward to hitting up this place again, especially over the cooler months. Well done guys!

Yum indeed. Fab food, relaxed atmosphere, good service, interesting decor, great for dining w family or friends, reasonably priced. Highly recommend.

Used to love this place but it's getting a bit sad. Plus I ate here recently and I saw a mouse! When I told my friends two had said they saw one there recently too.

f you want a quiet conversational night on Saturday, the Red Door isn’t for you. Try it for lunch or during a weekday.
At lunch, booking doesn’t seem necessary but it is essential for dinner, especially on Saturday.
Red Door specializes in dumplings but if dumplings aren’t your thing there are meat and chicken dishes served with rice. (see menu) I haven’t tried these dishes, dumplings being my thing.

Hidden off busy Chapel street Red door is like no other Yum Cha. Decked out in Asian Antiques where you find yourself dining amongst with cages and lanterns hanging above, and rich wood work surrounding you makes for a fascinating evening. You of course are able to purchase your table at the end of your night too if you wish, but lets see how you go with the Yum Cha first shall we?

Down an unassuming lane in Windsor, and after 5 years Red Door is still going strong after its reincarnation from a Chinese antique furniture shop, and now only serving food (the antiques business was closed down under the current owners but all the antiques were retained and scattered through the restaurant space). (note: the term dim sum is used to refer to the Chinese 'tapas' morsels everywhere in Asia, excepting in Australia where it is referred to as yum cha, which actually means tea drinking!). It feels like you are walking into an antique furniture shop in old Shanghai, and in fact nothing in its frontage gives you a clue this may be a restaurant. This is inexpensive but very authentic dim sum restaurant in amazingly eclectic oriental antique surrounds - complete with ancient teak bed seats. red door interior In addition to the dumplings we had a melt in the mouth Hunan chili beef stewed with daikon (white radish) and star anise - could have had more 'kick' in

How good is it when you find something you're not supposed to! Red Door Antiques and Yum Cha Café. The owner likes to keep it quiet. Tucked away in McIlwrick Street, Windsor, Red Door serves an array of dumplings and a small but appealing selection of oth

...The Prawn and Crab dumplings were gorgeous brightly coloured as the wrapping was almost see-through and big chunks of prawn inside!

I haven't had dim sum in Melbourne other than at Shark Fin House for years. However, I was sufficiently intrigued by Red Door Antiques and Yum Cha Cafe to stray from my faithful yum cha restaurant and cycle across town to check it out. Red Door offers a s

Nice food, but WAY overpriced!. I met a girlfriend here the other night, as we'd both been keen to try this place after hearing rave reviews, and although the night had a lot of great elements, the evening ended up being so expensive it really undercut the whole experience.

The décor is super cool, and I loved the antiquey-asian vibe to the place; we got to sit in one of the pagodas which was rather fun.
Whilst the service wasn't super fast, the food itself was really nice - we ordered quite a few dishes to share, my highlights being the Shanghai dumplings and the pork bun - my issues was in the value for the meal: when you were paying $9 for a steamer tray featuring 3 dumplings the size of walnuts, the whole evening added up super quickly. The portion sizes were tiny, and 2 girls who were only moderately hungry needed to order near 4 trays each to feel vaguely satisfied. The spring onion pancake, as recommended from other reviewers, was the size of the palm of my hand for $6, and the plate of mixed vegetables was $14 featuring one bunch of bokchoy and 3 or 4 broccoli florets.

So all up the evening ended up costing around $50 each, and that was only including one beer to drink, and afterwards we were still hungry enough to go source dessert elsewhere on Chapel St. It ended up being pretty disappointing as I personally HATE it when you leave somewhere still feeling hungry after paying a decent amount of money - so my advice would be to go find one of the many reasonably priced dumpling houses to satisfy your dumpling urge, and many just go to enjoy the décor for a pot of green tea.

Fantastic decor and service. Fantastic value for money and amazing decor. recommend highly

Good yum cha. Came here for yum cha. Great atmosphere and decor, food was good too

Wonderful but warm. Great selection of dumplings, well cooked and swiftly served. Still unsure about the green tea noodles but everything else I was with adored them. Nice wine. Really quiet for a Thursday evening for some reason.

Could use air con or even a ceiling fan for the coming months.

Great to here this place is still a hidden gem. Recommended it to my brother inlaw as he had a large group to accommodate. Thinking of places to choose from chapel street (Windsor end) has few 'great' resturants as in not to casual or 'bar-like'. Red Door sprang to mind as it's slightly hidden and 5 years ago if was recommended to me. The feed back from there evening was full of praise for the ambiance and how 'everyone' at the dinner was impressed and happy with the food and that is was very consistently good ( there was a dumplings where amazing comment also) Recommending a place is not as blasé as it would seem and I'm so glad Red Door is still recommendable.
Sarah
Food was yum but we had the banquet $40 per head and there wasn't enough food. Each type of dumpling was strictly one per person, and then got a beef dish that wasn't the best with rice

Nice ambience, well thought out decor. Food was tasty.. The food was authentic. staff courteous and the ambience, very pleasant. Just lovely.

A superb meal. Scallop dumplings and pork buns standouts, atmosphere just wonderful. Fantastic Yum Cha for adults and children alike. Service staff were knowledgable and very efficient. We will definitely go back to Red Door again. The interior was like Aladdins Cave. Loved it. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

I recommend this gem. Full of atmosphere, it offers quirky fun with low noise levels. Great dumplings, the menu may offer 3/ serve, but they are flexible. The best is the duck and mushroom offering. Wonderful.

My friends and I ate at Red Door last week and we all thoroughly enjoyed our dumplings. The Har Gow were very good and as well as the shanghai pork. The spring onion pancake was crispy and tasty. The only disappointment really was the bill. For 5 people it was around $270. For a couple of beers each plus dumplings it was more than $50 per person. Quite expensive when compared to other good dumpling places in Melbourne. But at least they were delicious!
Ken Madforth
The chilli beef tastes like the inside of a cheap pepper steal pie, the bean curd dumplings are chewy insipid wads of yuba filled with vegetable mush. Even the rice is an over cooked paste. No idea why this place is so full. #neveragain

So good one of my favourites!! Well priced BYO and they do GF dumplings yum!

Our favourite!. We have been coming here for years, special occasions, Friday night dinners and hangover Sunday mornings with hot oolong tea.
Never disappoints, lovely service and well-priced dumping. Thanks Red Door

Went there last week and it was nice, not amazing though, I'd say there is better places to go!

Still one of my favourites! Last nights visit was didn't disappoint. Service was kind, and quick. Food is always consistent.

Like it. Yummy food, good service and funky decor

What happened to this place? Looks like its seen better days. The dumplings were over steamed and stuck to the bamboo walls, the beef balls were raw in the middle , and the red bean buns overdone and chalky as well. Should have just gone to Victoria st asian supermarket and heated up at home myself! Very disappointed

Food was beautiful but a little pricy and had to wait too long, also make sure u order heaps or u will leave hungry

Just plain no good. Horrible. We had the banquet- Overpriced and underfed! Some of the dumplings were ok but the rest was pretty gross. The main course tasted like some kind of weird English stew, and the dessert was a joke- one scoop of ice cream that was mostly icicles. And the service sucked, they seemed to think they were doing us a huge favour by bringing extra chopsticks. Never again!!!

Went to Red door for my birthday lunch with my girlfriends. It was a beautiful place with very yummy food. Everyone had fun. I will be back and will bring more people back with me. Highly recommended! Thank you.

Not so much yum cha but a stylised dumpling house. A beautiful setting and a great (if not limited) menu.
Alwayshungry
Quirky, left of centre place with intermittent service, but wonderful dumplings.
Ficci Nisher
First impression looked good! Alas it did not continue. We were in a private room that was so hot and noisy!! They had 2 fans but there was no plug to plug them in! Food was ok, we ordered a banquet but there was not enough food. We were not regularly checked on by staff. Website says they are BYOB, but does not clearly state that beer is not included. Won't be returning

Antiques and dumplings what more could you want.... It's nice to come to a place and totally relax in a lovely setting such as this, we love the sticky rice and dumplings, washed down with a beer whilst perched on a cushion admiring the lovely setting.....

Perhaps I should start with the positive? The decor was gorgeous. Great atmosphere, and the reason I've always had red door on my wish list!
The dumplings were delicious. As were the beef balls with water chestnut.
Now, the negative:
- the table was so filthy I was too scared to touch it. My napkin was stuck fast to the thick layer of grease that covered all but the outer inch of the table. Seriously - most disgusting table I've ever sat at in a restaurant! Totally unexpected.
- the service was awful. We were seated then ignored for 20 mins. Had to call to ask to have our order taken.
- the food came out one dish at a time, with 5-10 mins between plate. SLOW! We had to share to save looking at each other eat. Lucky we don't mind that.
- the rice was over cooked and soggy. Red door - try get the basics right.
- the chilli beef was not pleasant. A bit like an overly spicy goulash. Taste of pepper overpowered it.
- the pork dish had soft chewy 'crackling' and was served in a bowl of soy. I spat out my first mouthful.

So, I won't be returning!! The atmosphere is great though. If you really must go I'd recommend doing dumplings and drinks only.
Nina Grace
Disappointing menu and food overall - especially as the rice was completely under cooked. It might be an idea for Red door to get a rice cooker and get the basics right first!!
Feeding_frenzy
Dumprings. I come here a fair bit but only because my friends go here a lot. I'd prefer to head into Richmond or the city for something real and exciting. It is cheap and cheerful but the flavours do little for me, it's quite bland. The decor is fantastic and the service is good. I am sure I will keep coming back, but it's not a place for people of Chinese origin!
Julia Eats Melbourne
Delicious dumplings, good service and a nice ambience.. You'll pay a bit more for dumplings at Red Door but they are great quality - in fact I think they are some of the best I have had. Not only is the food good the ambience and service was impressive. If you don't feel like being rushed (as you commonly are in China town) and want good service you won't mind paying a bit more to eat dumplings at Red Door. I'll be back again - especially for those pork dumplings!
James Sanders
Over Priced. I just got back from a meal at Red Door. I have been to my fair share of dumpling places around Melbourne, including tiny out of the way places you only end up at with your Asian friends.

This was well over priced (4 people, 8 beers and dumplings came to $182, so $45 where as you can go to china town and get Dumplings that taste as good for closer to $20 - $25 a head.

The service was good, but the manager seemed very rushed when placing dumplings on the table, he just dumped them on a corner and seemed to be walking away while telling you what each one was. Otherwise very nice staff.

The dumplings did take a very long time to come out, and seemed to come out in a trickle. First round orders we ordered around 8 dishes and we would receive one and then be waiting 5 mins before the next one arrived. The place was only about 30% full so would hate to see it when it was full.

On the plus side the dumplings were delicious.

Overall a good experience, but not worth the money that was spent. There are places that are better value for money and just as delicious.
GlenIrisMum
Pricey but worth it. Great dumplings and fantastic flavours. Not cheap yum cha but the surroundings were worth it. Dumplings a little slow to come out but the wait was ok when you started eating and the taste was excellent !

It's an interesting idea.. We visited Red Door for yum cha for my partner's birthday, having heard some great things about it.

Conceptually, I like the idea and the space is cool with all the antiques, but in the height of winter, someone needs to address the heating situation. It's a big space and when we went it was pretty empty, so not only was the temperature cold, but so was the feeling. Also, the toilet was in a bit of a state.

As has been previously mentioned, the menu is limited. The food is good, but pretty pricey (especially the green veg). Points for offering to make servings of four instead of the standard three.

Dumplings and Buns. Their is nothing better than some Yum Cha on a Sunday, and I must say this is a damn fine place to go and enjoy such thing.
Decked out with antiques for your dining tables with each pice of furniture adding its own charter makes for a charming but casual environment.
The dumplings are amazing, delicate and tasteful, I love love love the chicken peanut and the pork and sweet corn dumplings. Truly amazing. Coming in serves of three for around 8.50 is worth every penny.
The BBQ pork buns were clouds from heaven, soft delicate pillow like buns filled with juicy tender pork and BBQ sauce who would say no to these little babies. The best I've ever had, and trust me when I see them on the menu they are always ordered so I've had a few to know.
Atmosphere is made on the night whether for casual relaxed dining on a quieter day of the week or for something louder and uplifting head out on a busy night like a saturday.
Service was pleasant and the over all experience was great. We will be back.
Thomas Muller
Lovely place off Chapel. Most of the menu is yum cha with a few mains. Service is very friendly and happy to explain any of te menu and the atmosphere is excellent. They seem to be trying to bridge the gap between a la carte and mass production yum cha, so those looking to stuff their face for a dollar a pop should look elsewhere.

If you can, book on of the bed tables, very luxurious. The braised pork was particularly good. Got a little noisy as it filled towards the end of the night, but thats fridays for you, otherwise perfect night. Will go back again.

BRILLIANT IN EVERY WAY..... There is a definite uniqueness to Red Door. This place is amazing. A real treat for the senses... I love my food and food experiences and finally (after many friends recommendations) I booked my table at Red Door. This is not your usual Yum Cha experience. Firstly the decor in this old warehouse conversion (NOT dirty at all...) is fantastic. Fitted out with original antique Chinese furniture, art work and a roof littered with lanterns. Just beautiful. Apparently there used to be more of an emphasis on the sale of these pieces until the current owner took over and made it more about the food. I don't know why I waited so long, the food was wonderful. We started with a mix of different baskets of dumplings (the prawn and crab and shanghai pork were my favourites!!) The dumplings were all beautifully cooked, and had a wonderfully diverse taste and texture.
Then on the recommendation of our waitress we ordered the duck bean curd wraps......... and then we re-ordered them........ and re ordered....... Everyone MUST try these! Lightly shredded duck and vegetables wrapped in a thin pancake-like bean curd wrap. For main we had the braised sweet pork belly, a little slow to come out, but it was simply beautiful. Great flavours, leaving you wanting more.
All in all a wonderful dining experience. Ticks all the boxes food, service, variety and a beautiful, fun, inviting setting.
Well done RED DOOR... I will definitely be back...

,

Really dirty.. This place has haphazard service, and needs a good clean...I get grunge but this place looks as if it was opened and never dusted, washed down etc again. Food came out so quickly that i wondered if they had it ready to go....a bit off putting. Menus were filthy and also small with no exciting choices.
Daffy
Food is good but a little pricey. I love the ambiance of the restaurant. The decor of real antique furnishing is very lovely. The food is pretty good too but it is a tad expensive.
JC
Love Love Love. Love this place. It is in a antique shop so very different from the usual yum cha surroundings. There is only a limited menu but the food is great and the space has a good feel.
Recommended for sure.

Best pork dish EVER!! Cant stop going back for it. Needs better soft drinks and cocktails but the food is awesome!!

A Unique Concept with Great Food. I don't know what some people are carrying on about. We found this place to be a pleasant surprise and a unique dining concept.

We were a walk-in (no booking) of 2 on a busy Friday night and the place was packed. After a brief couple of minutes that were touch-and-go, we were seated. They even happily accommodated our request for a different set of antique seats which were carried from the other side of the restaurant (or store, depending on how you look at it).

The food was quality, tasty yum cha-style dishes for the most part, and everything we tried on the night was a success. The big surprise was the reasonably priced wine list which was concise, but it had a few little gems. We had a 2011 Best's Pinot Meunier which was perfect with the food and only a few buck over the standard retail price.

For those reviewers who think that 3 dumplings for $9 in a restaurant constitutes a portion size that's "very small & expensive", my advice is to check out your local Chinese takeaway. There you can order a number 39 with black bean sauce, and enjoy it in the comfort of your own lounge room for half the price.

Try Red Door.
Desperately Seeking Dumpling
Never again!. Went for dinner with a group of friends on a Friday evening & would not recommend red door to anyone. Setup in a warehouse space with lovely furniture it looked lke it had potential.
Service was very sloppy & overly familiar, sharing menus & wine lists is a no no considering the restaurant was not full & it seemed like the waiter could hardly be bothered being there. He really just could not be bothered wandering over to get extra menus.
Food portions were very small & expensive a plate of 3 dumplings was $9 & the taste & quality of the ingredients were average. The so called main serves very tiny & the amount of rice in the serve was woeful - do the people south of the river have an aversion to carbs?
Our group of 5 ordered what the waiter said was "definitely" enough for dinner we were incredibly disappointed.,.. We ended up still being hungry & underwhelmed by the service, food interns of taste & quality. We left & went looking for real food round the corner.
Avoid avoid avoid! Terrible sloppy service, tiny portions, overpriced & very noisy restaurant.

Awesome set up. Great food. Lovely Aussie dude serving (owns the place). Highly recommend for wow factor instead of your usual stuffy, sticky, dirty yum cha restaurants.

Red Door. Found this "jewel" by fluke on U-Spoon.
don't generally like yum cha but this is a bewdy !!
lunchtime is quiet time..perfect for me.
if you want action, go for dinner...BUT make sure you book !
keep up the good work, Sam

Exceptional. After eating here 2 times now this restaurant provides a high level of consistency across all dishes. Excellent service, great food and unforgettable atmosphere.

Love the environment and the relaxed dining style. Highly recommended........treat yourself to a memorable night out.

The best. This is the most authentic yum cha restaurant in melbourne , owned by an aussie who has come from Homg Kong and brought her chef with her. This is like dining in someones private home , awesome. Don't knock it its the best and if you don't know that then you are no judge of yum cha!
Philip
Worst place ever! Had to wait 20mins to be seated even though there was empty seats. When we were finally seated the table was dirty and sticky we requested it to be wiped down 3 times. Placed drinks order and it came in 2 parts 20 mins apart. Asked for the bill and went to the counter and asked and was told to sit down and wait... So walked out. This place has lots of potential and as a guy who works in training people in customer service and hospitality there are no exceptions for bad rude or even lengthy service.
MelbourneEater87
Dumpling destination. I have visited Red Door on several occasions, almost always for a lazy afternoon Yum Cha. It is a truly unique find. There are few things better than lazing back on a Balinese day bed, eating dumplngs and reading the Sunday papers. Although the menu is a bit limited. the food is delicious - especially the dumplings (this is coming from a dumpling fanatic!). Service can be a bit ordinary but certainly not rude. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Hot_fudge_248
Was terrible, food was tasty BUT beware the portion size was a disgrace, bread and butter size plate we shared with 8 people, 2 tiny tiny size bowles of rice between 8, not on, the menu is the worst i have ever seen, nothing to choose from, but with no choice we ordered, the vegetables consisted of i head of broccole and 6 bok choy leaves $15 worth, wot a discrace, never again
David John
Why are we waiting?. I recently had dinner at the Red Door on a Saturday night with around 10 friends. To start with, some cutlery and napkins were missing from the table. We had BYO'd our own wine, which we put on the table and waited for attention from the waiters. This never happened, and in the end we just opened the bottles ourselves. No one seemed to be attending to our table. The restaurant was pretty full, and it was clear they were understaffed.

Having finally grabbed a waiter's attention, we ordered the 'secret' banquet for $35. This wasn't on the menu, and therefore we had no real idea what was going to be in it, but trusted their judgement. It was really just a whole lot of dumplings and one rice dish at the end. These all came out in drips and drabs over the course of 3 hours! Initially 1 set of 4 dumplings came out, and this was the only food we saw for the next 30 mins - How do you share this between 10 people!?

The food was nice, but the terrible service and slow food meant that we were all grumpy and tired!

The restaurant is also extremely loud with concrete floors, so it really wasn't an ideal setting for catching up with friends.

I won't be returning to this place.
Denise Brigitte
Fresh, tasty, devine! Will definately go back.

Hard over cooked rice, chilli beef extremely dry, steamed (microwaved) curry chicken bun, soft oily veggies. The dumplings were quite nice though
Kate Van Der Lit
Tasty food but limited menu. I recently went here for the second time, the food is tasty and the decor adds to the experience but the service is medicore and the menu is a bit limited. What they do have is very tasty but everything is cooked to order and can take quite a while to come out. We went for a Sunday yum cha and there were only a couple of other tables, I'd hate to think what it would be like when it was full. We also struggled to get the attention of the waiter on more than one occasion.

Eat and eat for very little. This is a great inexpensive meal. I am often very wary of some dumpling houses as many use MSG. however, Red Door has great fresh ingredients that are super tasty as well. A great hidden gem.

Food trendies haunt. Another food trendy haunt... be forewarned.

Have been here a few times and continue to be very impressed. Nicely hidden away but still only seconds from the main drag. Delicious dumplings, don't leave without trying the lobster. Wouldn't order the peanut again but think that's more to personal preference than poor quality. One word of advice, order as much as you want when you have the waiter with you, once it gets busy it can be hard to grab them again for ordering more.
Bazza_me
Slow service, no air-con, waited 20 mins for the bill. BBQ pork buns were really good, other dumplings were so so. Service was very slow, from 2 waiters in a half full restaurant. Drinks came quickly and were served icy cold but food took awhile and was dumped down unceremoniously by a waiter who wasn't sure which dumplings were which. We asked for the bill twice and were forced to go up to the front 20 minutes later when it still hadn't come. Cheap prices but a less than satisfying visit. We won't be back.

Dim Sum served by aussies?lol. Been wanting to try this place out for awhile and finally got around to it on a sunday afternoon.

Upon arriving i was surprised to see aussie waiters serving yum cha, not something you see everyday :) "at least the service will be better" i thought....thinking back to the rude and abrupt service i get from most asian yum cha resteraunts because the staff are always so busy and stressed out....or cant understand you lol.

Got the menu's and was surprised to discover that they didnt serve any coffee! Something i was in need of at the time...so we ordered our green tea and preety much most of what they had on the yum cha menu, excluding the lobster dumplings and another seafood one...as they had run out :( the two most appealing on the menu and they had run out?

Food was served quickly and i was pleased with most of the dishes apart from a few (do not order beef). Service was a let down...the waitress that served us most of the time was just grumpy throughout our whole time there....we wanted to order more and was told abruptly that "the kitchen closes in 5minutes" preety much saying "hurry the hell up!" In refference to the kitchen...judging by the size of the joint and the small menu....the kitchen probably only consisted of a single steamer :P

The dumplings were good....even thought the menu was small. Id come back here again for a few of the dishes...but based on the service of that one girl....and the fact that its a little out of the way from home....it wouldn't be any time in the near future.

Get rid of the Teenage son's presence & you are on a winner!. I love yum-cha, and frequent or at least try most of the yum-cha eateries popping up over Melbourne, so this was a nice surprise to be taken there after a gallery opening last night. The settling and interior are superbly comfortable, I had no idea this is an antiques store as well and if it is then I want the caponied day bed we were sitting on!
These dumplings are really good - and home made. All of them home made, which is not always the case elsewhere. Tested on the Pork Shu Mai - most often these are just your frozen packaged kind which is fine and expected if you are at a 'Westlake', but not so good if you are at a 'Mahjong' - as in I am not paying $10 for frozen packaged style. Red Doors Pork Shu Mai are home made with love and are devine. BBQ Pork Buns are the best I have had to date. Anywhere. The selection is small but totally covers all your needs and wants.
The only complaint I had with Red Door was the families teenage son being matré d - get him off the floor, get rid of him and his rude attitude as he is only doing you a dis service.
I am popping back there tonight with my partner (who is a yum-cha fan also) so hopefully it will be just as good - albeit with the teenage sons absense.
Racy_jacy
What an hilariously ecclectic place! Awesome food -don't miss the lobster dumplings! There are even gluten-free options! And it does yum cha for dinner -need I say more?!?!
Amy Martini
Service is a bit slow but the dumplings are delicious and well worth he wait! Yum! Love the decor too.
Gavin
Not real yum cha contrary to the sign at the door, over priced undersized meals, terrible service and half the food on the menu not available, stay away

Mmmmm...... dumplings. What a fabulous place for dinner. Wonderful, peaceful (initially) then vibrant atmosphere complimented by delicious array of dumpling-based dishes. Friendly couteous staff with relaxed but prompt service made for a great night out. Highly recommend.
