Review White Salt Fish & Chips - Woolamai

Fabi Azimi
The fish & chips was the best we've ever had to date. We ordered seafood basket and fish&chips and the flake was delicious. Potato wedges and fish were cooked to perfection, not oily or dry. The home-made tartar sauce was tasty. Staff were friendly and the food was great value for money. Can't wait to go over again!

Hands down the best fish and chips I've ever had. Went twice on the same day! The calamari was unbeatable the first time, and slightly over cooked the second time, but still fantastic thick bands of lightly battered goodness. The tempura vegetables were a winner, as were the hand cut chunky chips. Will visit again for sure. Also, they should start selling the tartare it was that good.

White Salt has, as they say, jumped the shark. We ordered the dinner for three... It took nearly an hour. We wouldn't have minded the wait if they told us up front but they didn't so we sat around waiting with very hungry kids in the stinking heat. Unlike the original owners who used to pump out super quality fresh food even in the busy periods, when the food was eventually ready, the chips were soggy as though they had been in a plastic bag for a half hour even though we ate there immediately. The blue was not fresh.. fishy smelling and pretty inedible. The potato cakes were omitted for some reason. Business is surviving off original owners reputation... Now is a classic example of a Ramsay Kitchen Knightmare.

With high expectations of good fish and chips due to location. We were utterly disappointed and annoyed about the money spent on the fish and chips. Absolutely won't be going back there again. 1 star out of 5 is too high of a rating of the dinner we had last night...
Michael Brown
Easily the best fish and chips we've ever eaten... The funny thing was four of us ordered souvlakis from the nearby place (they were good) and my young daughter had fish and chips and potato cakes... it was a big serve and we all got to try some. We all raved and regretted our decision! The fish was the freshest I've ever eaten, the handcut chips and handcut potato cakes were amazing. I only wish this was my local!

We have never had Fish and Chips of this quality including the best rated Fish and Chip shop winners in Westbourne and Lower Parkstone near Bournemouth. These guys are in a league of their own. The freshly made potato chips, the light tempura batter, the succulent Blue Grenadier fish were all cooked to perfection. We are just so disappointed that we did not try their other stuff while on our flying visit to Phillip Island: tartare sauce, calamari etc.. Oh well, I guess we just have to make another trip down under.

Absolutely terrible fish and chips cooked in old oil and looked and tasted reheated. The calamari and chips were brown in colour, Discovered there were new owners. 30/4/2016

Very good fish and chips. Friendly staff. BUT charging (20 cents) for a 14g squeeze-on masterfood tomato sauce!!! In a fish and chips place? That's bloody cheap. McDonald's gives it for free... Then, this elderly couple shows up, sit at a table nearby and what?!... The lady takes out her own bottle of Heinz tomato sauce from her purse. I guess they are locals... Where's the world going?

One of the worst fish and chips I have ever had. The service was friendly but unfortunately that’s where the positives end. <br/><br/>We have the fisherman’s pack for two: 2 x flake (battered and grilled), 2 x potato cakes and 4x calamari rings). While the batter was thin, the oil it was fried in was either really old or not hot enough (or both!) as the calamari rings and potato cakes had taken on this browny oily colour once bitten into. The result was food that was oozing fat and very unappetising. The grilled fish seemed like it had been broiled rather than grilled and was also poor.
Michelle White
Worst fish and chips I have ever had. Berthing soggy and tasted of old oil, potato cakes were thin and literally dark brown. Expensive and extremely disappointing for the location. Will be on The island frequently but will never go back.
YummyMummy
I feel a little ill as I write this because dinner was sooooooo oily. The fish was good (though I’ve never had such thinly cut flake though the batter was nice and thin) but when I stuck a fork into a potato cake and it let oil out like a sponge I should’ve known... the chips were soggy and far too oily too and the tartare was very ordinary indeed (in fact I left it).. four adults and four kids were full on two packs for three - but I think it’ll be a long time before I can tolerate the thought of fish and chips again - and next time I’ll try somewhere else.

Went for dinner last night - really disappointing. Cost us $38 and we only got two really small and (what tasted like) frozen fish. The chips were soggy and nothing was hot. Won't be going back.

Pretty decent fish and chips. All the cooking is done in the back out of sight, which is different to almost every fish and chips place I've ever been to. We came in to an extremely friendly reception from the staff, and they were quick to offer us altered pack options that weren't on the signs based on our number, without us having to ask. <br/>Fish was well-cooked, not overly battered, but pieces were small. Chips were easily above average, nice and crispy throughout. I had my suspicions that this place would be your run-of-the-mill takeaway fish and chips joint, especially being in a small town, but White Salt turned out to exceed my expectations.

Hands down the freshest and biggest serve of fish and chips I've had in Victoria! You know the chips weren't frozen from a supermarket bag when they come in all shapes and sizes. You could actually taste the potato and not just grease. The fish was sooooo fresh and tasty (As is what Phillip island is famous for). Batter wasn't too thick and meat was really juicy. Service was really good as well. Definitely worth visiting!

I really liked the way my order was taken; the hospitality is excellent! This is a small shop and small bits are done for the ambience and feel, but it looks cute :)<br/><br/>As suggested by the lady at the counter, as a beginner I went with the local - Flake fish, and it was really smooth! The quantity is overwhelming too, but my only complaint is that it is too bland! The small piece of lemon and Aioli dip couldn't help me much! :(<br/>I would have preferred a little spiced up batter, but I believe thats how the things are done, so be it!<br/><br/>P.S.: This was my first "Fish n chips" destination!

Average fish (fresh, but not fresh off the boat fresh) and chip (handcut but nothing special really). Friendly service and there's an ATM on site if you don't have cash. The wait can be a bit long.
Masterpupil
One of the best. Slightly more expensive than. Your average fish and chips but this is not an average chippery. Great selection of fresh fish and the thick chips are great.
Morris
This fish and chip shop brings it all up a level. Hand cut potato cakes, homemade tartare sauce, and local fish which a lot of places boast about, this one I believe. They offer packs and leave it to you which fish you prefer, we had flathead tails and blue grenader, both excellent, fresh, tender and steamy. Also ordered grilled salmon. Both counter and table seating. You must try this place its worth the drive.Best on Island.

White Salt Fish and Chippery gets my award for the best fish and chips on the Island. Hand cut chips and perfectly cooked fish, this place treats the classic fish and chips with a whole lot of love and care. Very busy at times but well worth the wait.
Yvonne Chappell
We had fish and chips from here tonight it was expensive and disgusting the Batter was horrible and chips seem old and to top it off it was cold would not recommend to anyone I know
Annie_Baz
Visited White Salt last night and wasn't disappointed! The chips were tasty, fish tasted fresh and a few extra potato cakes were thrown in, which is always the sign of a good fish and chip shop. Service was fast and saved us cooking!!
Minda
This place has the best chips on Phillip Island. All hand cut. Costs a little bit (no less than anywhere else with this quality) more but well worth paying the extra. Friendly staff
Stackcats
We've been here several times already, and this is one of the best fish and chips joints around.<br/><br/>Not the cheapest fish and chips takeaway joint, a meal for 2 (with flathead) is around $30. But in that meal for 2 you get HEAPS of fresh flathead fillets, absolutely glorious. The batter is light but you still get that non-greasy crunchiness. Calamari rings and prawns are great too. The handcut chips are fantastic. We often couldn't finish the chips in one go but save them and reheat them on the grill the next day, and still good. Hubby and toddler love this place too.<br/><br/>Whenever we go to Phillip Island, we always drop by this place. Highly recommended

Absolutely disgusting! <br/>We went there on a friend's recommendation.<br/>They are very over priced.<br/>First of no eftpos, then their machine was out of action. Got told to go around the corner to the grocery store, his machine was out of order.<br/>Had to buy something to get cash out... mm<br/>We ordered, the grilled fish was barely grilled, and pale in color and tasteless.<br/>The hand cut chips, more like the end of the chips that should have been thrown away. They were pale, soggy, and the oil was old and rancid.<br/>The hand cut potato cakes were so small and in the same condition as the chips.<br/>I have never tasted anything so revolting.
Daniel Gilmore
Easily the best fish and chips on the island. Clean, fresh and well worth any wait you might have. They serve real potato cakes that are hand cut, and not the out of the packet variety that you get from any other chippery. The quality is unmatched on PI.
SMacca
This joint was a big dissappointment. The chips were soggy and somehow slightly undercooked, the calamari and prawn were average. The fish was the best part - fresh and delicious - however we ordered two flakes, got our order home and realized we'd only been given one. $7.50 down the drain. I wouldn't bother going there again - overall below average
Marzy30
Amazing best chips and potato cakes I've ever had!! Fast friendly service
Honi Holmes
We had to wait almost 2 hours for our order on good Friday...I expected a long wait but not that long - they told us it'd be an hour which we were ok with. We had to give our kids toasted sandwiches because they couldn't wait. Luckily my fish burger was pretty good though.
Heyjude
BELOW AVERAGE. Ordered from here this long weekend just gone, ok 25 min wait understandable but became 1 hour, unacceptable when the fish and chips were lousy! As said in a previous review, old oil used, chips were brown no golden and the whiting was frozen fish not fresh. Scallops were not cleaned properly either, these were thrown out!!<br/><br/>$6.00 is a bit steep for small serve of chips!!! especially being that they were inedible.<br/><br/>Will not be buying my fish & chips here next time.<br/>Very disappointing.
Lovebug
I have never written a negative review, this is more feedback if the owners read this.<br/><br/>CHANGE YOUR OIL MORE OFTEN. The colour of the chips and potato cakes was unappealing. Instead of being golden brown and holding a nice shape, they look old and a kind of translucent brown colour and soggy. Old oil tastes unpleasant when you eat it followed by a bitter after taste. If I'm going to eat food so high in calories I want to taste worth it.<br/><br/>The money you save by not changing the oil actually costs you business. Why would customers come back for that?
Cacamp
Yumm. Lovely fresh fish with beautiful hand cut chips and potato cakes. <br/>Partner said potato cakes are the best she has ever had.<br/>Only negative's are hand cut chips went cold quick and some over cooked Priced a little high but not excessive.
Smiley_75
Delicious!. Great service, the staff were really friendly and the hand cut chips were divine.

Open 7 days a week in summer. Open 12 noon to 8.30 everyday!

Terrible. Doesn't get much worse, burger was raw and chips soggy

I'm actually really sad about this because White Salt has always had a great reputation and I've had some good experiences over the years, however about a few poor ones now - unfortunately this will be my last visit. We ordered an hour in advance for a large order as we knew it would take a while. When we went to pick it up (still had to wait) and the meal packs we got were so extremely disappointing. For an expensive $20 pack, the one piece of grilled fish was literally like cardboard, I'm not joking, none of us could eat it, tomato sauce couldn't even remotely save it. One piece of calamari, a prawn and a scallop which were ok, and a large box of reasonable chips. The tempura vegetables are still quite good.
Ramz
Would be quicker to hire a boat & catch fish yourself. Worst experience ever. Couldn't care less how it tasted, the wait was 1hr+... No sorry, no consideration, no courtesy. Go elsewhere!

Food is good but at a premium. If money is plentiful then this is the place to buy your fish and chips. Chips are homecut, chunky and tasty. If you prefer your more regular style chip then look elsewhere. The fish and other seafood is generally fresh and nicely cooked with a thin batter. The sauces compliment the meal well. The staff are always friendly. However for a meal of take away fish and chips it is extremely expensive and prices seem to keep on rising! The meal packs offer very little value (perhaps a saving of 10 or 20 cents). For example a meal of 4 calamari, small chips and a home style sauce will set you back $13... a saving of 10 cents if you were to buy them separately and wanted to mix it up a little. A meal for one, including a piece of fish, costs nearly $20... double what you can expect to pay in many fish and chippies. In the peak times you will often have to wait upto an hour or more for your meal. I wish it was more affordable and then I could give it full marks (and they would also get more business) but as it stands it would be out of reach for many people.

Haven't been in a while and not missing out on anything. Had the classic chips (expensive for how many we got) and hard to tell the difference between the fish bites and chips! Small, over priced fish bites and not very nice. To think we paid $5 for those 4 tiny little things! (Refer to picture!)<br/>The wait time poor for what you got as the result. Very disappointed and won't be recommending to anyone on the island.
Cassidy & Sneakers
Tasty but expensive hand cut chips. We ordered grilled salmon, small chips, battered flake, and three potato cakes, which cost $28 all together. The chips only came in two sizes, being small ($6) and large ($10), which we found to be incredibly expensive, even if they are hand cut. The fish were clearly cooked too early as they were both warm, close to being cold. The salmon wasn't completely cooked through on one end. The flake inside the batter was no more than 5mm thick at the most. <br/><br/>The positives though is the chips, and their home made sauces, both were fantastic. The service was also great, they were very friendly.<br/><br/>We would definitely go back again but would probably avoid the fish and try a burger instead.

We ate here tonight after reading all the reviews on the net. The thought of hand cut chips had us in a second!! After a day on the beach with our dogs we called in on the way home for an early tea. The shop is inviting very clean and the staff are fantastic ! <br/>We ordered fish ( one grilled one fried) dim sims potato cakes . We sat at one if their outdoor tables so our canine mates could join in - they were on a promise of a dim sim!! <br/>Service was quick and the food was hot! The chips were big and fluffy texture ....yummmm! Our fish was delicious and the potato cakes which we learnt we're home made we're amazing !!! Crunchy and not greasy! <br/>This meal was outstanding and where we live in healesville we have ace fish n chips at east end , but I think we just found east ends Phillip Island sister !

As we walked in the owner was hand cutting the chips, it was a good start! Beautifully fresh fish with a light batter, home made tartar and great service. Well worth the drive from the city!

Solid. From Melbourne. 2 kids under 4. real review :)<br/><br/>this place is good, solid fish and chips. asked for chips to be extra cooked and they were. and they have ice cream :)
Jodi
Good service. Brilliant fish and chips. Nothing fancy but good value. Service was very quick considering how many people were waiting on a hot day.
Esther
Tempura veggies delicious!!!!!
Bcscribe451
Awful food, lovely owners. Chips: bizarre taste, consistency like shoe leather. Souvlaki cold and so much garlic sauce that it was more like soup in a stale wrap. Fish sandwich was an equal horror. All that and the meal, chips and all, was COLD after the 5-minute drive home. Very sad, as place was highly recommended to us. Why oh why did Lonely Planet give them a 2014 feature? This place needs to close down.

Hands down best fish n chips on the island. Been to basically every other place and it's almost painful to think we struggled through that food when we could have had this. Fresh, clean seafood with a light batter so there's no oily aftertaste. We got the meal for two and everything was incredible, a good amount of food for a good price. Will be recommending this place to everyone.<br/>Evette and Kent

Mobile review. Another vote for the veggies here, no chips required, although they were just as good - thumbs up
Celestine Airey
What a delight - we simply ordered a pack for two and it came with the perfect combination of deliciousness - the chips are to die for and we were 100% satisfied - will come again tomorrow - yum!!!

Friendly and quick service. fish, chips, potato cakes all yummy and fresh. souvalaki average.

Looking forward to your fish and chips took the trouble to find you and you are closed for the whole weekend ! Not happy

Purchased burger with the lot, was ok, nothing to write home about, but loved the fact that it was hand cut chips! A little bit over priced for take away, but service was great.

Brilliant Fish & Chips. I've not had fish this good in a long time. Amazing hand cut chips and the best homemade tartare sauce ever! Will definitely be coming back!
Wilson Family
Best on the Island, 4 a feed.. Great place, great food and run by the friendliest couple, hats off to you both.
Leanne Haythorpe
Beautiful!. Wonderful fresh fish and chips! The hand cut chips were awesome as was the potato cake and homemade tartare. The staff were friendly and it topped off a great day on the Island. Can understand this place can be chockers in peak season will be back for sure!

Amazing! I love, love, love this place. You may have to wait a while (ESP in January) and they're closed Mon/Tues - but these are the only downsides... Everything else is fantastic; the batter is just right, the potato cakes the perfect thickness, handcut chips are obviously delicious (ESP with house made tartare) and the flake is great quality with excellent flavour. Haven't yet had a bad experience here. Yum!
Fred
Expensive, slow & average food.. Not quite sure about some of the reviews here - I suspect they've never had PROPER fish & chips!<br/><br/>I found the service very slow. The waiting area has the tallest, most uncomfortable chairs every made.<br/><br/>They don't serve proper chips, just potato wedges. Rather meagre portions too.<br/><br/>Oh yeah, as others have said - don't complain or you're likely to receive a nasty retort!
Best Hand Cut Chips
Amazing. I had fish and chips at white salt and couldn't fault it it was cooked perfactly and the kids never have really liked seafood and no they love it everytime i am at the island i will eat there for sure
Margaret
Margaret. I am very puzzled by the 2 bad reviews!<br/>My experiance of White Salt is VERY different indeed.<br/>My family and i have just returned from a 2 week holiday on Phillip Island and our highlight was White Salt.<br/>The worlds greatest HAND CUT chips and potato cakes, yes chunky hand cut pure potato, i saw it with my own eyes, it's an open style kitchen so you can watch as they prepare your food and chop chips!<br/>I highly recomend their tempura vegies, even my grandson enjoyed them.<br/>I must admit, the wait did get very long especially around 7pm. the longest we had to wait was 90 min but in fairness to the owners it was a 40 degree day and they had a que out the door. <br/>We ate at White Salt almost every night and every meal was presented beautifully by very friendly, helpful staff. It always tasted scrumptios.<br/>They also have ice cream and gelarti....so dessert is also taken care of !<br/>We will be sure to return to Phillip Island if only to get our fix of White Salt!
EJ
Really Great Seafood. Its hard to believe its the same place after reading the reviews below but we found it great.<br/>We went and got take away on the 4/1/12, there were 16 of us ordering and we waited around 25 minutes, which i thought was ok and the service was friendly.<br/>We thoroughly enjoyed the seafood and fish and chips it was great value for money and cooked to perfection, not oily or dry and their home made chips and potato cakes were fantastic.<br/>No complaints from us, a large fussy family on holidays !
Carly
Won't be going back. I would agree with Mark's comments of 2 January 2011. We too were told there was going to be a 30-40 minute wait when ordering but waited 90 minutes for our food.<br/>It is expected that we would wait longer during a peak period however it is also expected that the time frames given would be closer to the reality of the wait. This gives consumer's the choice whether to go ahead with the order or seek alternative arrangements for the evening. <br/><br/>This restaurant was absolutely fabulous when it first opened but I have been disppointed on my last three visits by either the quality of the food or the service provided.<br/><br/>The food is good but not excellent like it once was and at a price point higher than competitors I would expect it to be better. <br/><br/>Despite the above, the determining factor for me not going back would certainly be the response to customer complaints. I was horrified as I watched a complaining customer (for very good reason) been yelled at by the man taking the complaint and then yelled at further by a woman in the kitchen screetching at him as he left with his money. <br/><br/>I would have liked to have given this feedback in person and not in a public forum but after viewing this display there was no way I was going to.<br/><br/>Certainly won't be going back and would suggest others seek other eating arrangments too.
Mark
Rude and Slow - Don't go there. They advised it would be a 30-40 minute wait. 1 hour and 20 minutes later they still hadn't started cooking.<br/><br/>Then they claimed they never said it would be only 30-40 minutes - despite the fact everyone waiting agreed that's what they had been told. Everytime I inquired they kept saying - only another 10 minutes<br/><br/>Rather than be apologetic for the slowness they just offered abuse when I complained. They offered my money back but no apologies for the slowness. Their customer service is lousy - don;t offer them patronage
Catherine Dawson
Yummy!. We got the family pack and couldn't finish it. The fish and chips were excellent. My kids say that it was best fish and chips ever.
Alpal
Best Fish and Chips Ever!. Lovely friendly staff who were very accomodating, great service<br/>Nice family atmosphere<br/>Food was delicious and would not hesitate to go back<br/>Loved the tempura vegetables
Ale
Average service plastic fork no knives... Oily food - worst FISH and chips I have done
Melissa
After seeing the penguin parade, myself and some friends stopped off at White Salt Fish and Chippery and were not disappointed. The lady at the counter was very nice, the place incredibly clean and the food very yummy! Unlike some oily fish and chips, this was something else. The best fish and chips I've had in Melbourne to date!
Tim
Awesome! I want to go back to Phillip Island just for the fish and chips!
Darkchick3n
Great Fish & Chips. This place should be bursting at the seams with people during holiday season - luckily I was there off-peak. Hand cut thick wedge chips which were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Potato cakes were also prepared on site, similar to the chips. Proper fresh calamari rings (not that processed meat you usually get) and flake fillets were battered well and tasted great. Prices were reasonable for what you get - all served with a big smile. Next time I'm around, I'll definitely be back for the calamari rings!
Taryn
Love It - Best Fish and Chips on the island. The Fish and chips from here were great, not too mention the option to enjoy the wide selection of ice cream afterwards.<br/>Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly - Not greasy at all. The chunky chips with chicken salt topped it all off! ~ Amazing! <br/>The level of customer service was also very good.<br/>Overall very satisfied and will definately be going back here, and recommending to anyone who asks.
Lilpil
Great fresh soft pieces of fish ( I recommend the flathead fillets), the clamaris were generally soft (I had 1 chewy one from 4), the hand cut chips fried to perfection with the insides still soft and fluffy. Not too greasy like some other fish and chipperies, it satisfied my seafood cravings during my Phillip island visit.
Jesse Ross
Beautiful everything. Batter was beautiful and thin. The chips and tartare sauce were homemade. Chips were big beautiful wedges. Batter on fish was perfectly thin. Prawns and callomari were beautiful. Service was friendly and quick. Perfectly cooked.<br/>Would definitely go there again
Hania Trzaskowski
Best fish 'n' chips I ever had. Very fresh fish, the most tender succulent calamari, and hand cut chips that although aren't all crispy, are very fresh and Taft and most importunity- not frozen. You won't get anything processed and frozen here. Even got to have grilled fish seasoned and garnished with herbs and seeds- for no extra cost. Was totally impressed- and on top of it all- did not have that awkward heavy I'll feeling you get after regular frozen processed mockeries you get from other places. 10/10

White Salt Fish and Chippery. White Salt is an excellent gourmet fish and chippery. A good range of fresh fish that you can have either grilled or encased in a crisp tempura batter. Big healthy salads and tempura battered vegies are also on offer. Their big fat chips are delicious, and the service is friendly. Great!

I was craving for Fish & Chips, White Salt Fish And Chippery was pretty much the better option I searched for on Urbanspoon taking into consideration taste, and location. The store was located at the Woolamai region, a few minutes drive in from Phillip island bridge itself. We ordered a meal for two. Two fishes we chose from a small variety selection, the Whiting Fish and the Blue Grenadier. Of course you could opt for deep fried tempura style, or simply grilled. I do like the Blue Grenadier better (The one pierced with a blue sword) as it has that stronger fish taste. If we ordered flakes alongside the deep fried chips, I foresee the both of us would get sore throat syndromes by the night. Jan especially loved the more than sufficient battered chips. That's what a classic wedge should be like, he said.
