Review Tequila Mockingbird - Woollahra

Delicious food! The signature drink is a must try. Had the tasting menu, $85 pp and it was the best decision. Every single thing that came out was super impressive. Highly recommended!

This slow-cooked barbecued roasted lamb shoulder deserves to be on the main page! It’s so soft that the lightly fatty meat slides off the blade bone easily at the prof of a fork, and along with the chimichurri… it’s just perfect. 👨‍🍳 🤌 and the rest of the food was just as good and tasty and exceptional! And their heavenly signature cocktail? Tequila Mockingbird is a well-built mix of muddle cucumber and jalapeño chilli with elderflower liqueur coated with Mexican Chili/salt 🌶 spicy with the right amount of alcohol kick. Our date night in TMB was sensational and we can’t wait to introduce this to our friends and go back for the second round! ❤️

Great service and vibe, very tasty food. We had 6 people and ordered the banquet menu, the food portions were very generous. Also the tequila themed cocktails are worth trying.

The best Prawn Tacos I have ever had. Amazing location and service. This place and the location takes you to an experience you would get on the back streets of Spain

Enjoyed a delicious meal here. The kingfish cerviche was great. We shared a very generous potion of charcoal lamb shoulder with salsa. The octopus was amazing flavours and tender. Great cocktails and the lemon yuzu dessert we shared was the perfect finish. You won’t be disappointed with the food or the attentive service. Thankyou .

Brilliant!! Wow what a great restaurant. Friendly staff, edgy tasty food, nicely presented, generous serve sizes, cooked from fresh, great side dishes on offer, decent wine list, a great eating experience Worth a few more visits!
Luca
All very good and tasty and the service was excellent! We tried the Set Menu! Atmosphere of a classic South American Pousada.

Omg, the ceviche tacos might be one of the closest experiences to feel heaven in your mouth... I booked Tequila Mockingbird by mistake as I wanted to book Esteban, however it is one of those honest mistakes you love to have. Great atmosphere, latin music that makes u feel like dancing, tequila in every single imaginable cocktail, exceptional service and the food... well I can't express enough how glad I was to be there... Keep it up guys 🌮🍹❤

My gfs and I had our first catch up in ages here at Tequila Mockingbird and it did not disappoint. This restaurant has been on my list for ages and it was a good opportunity to eat good Mexican and celebrate our birthdays.

As it is only a 1.5 hour seating with a set menu. We did feel rushed but we knew this was a requirement. Luckily i am a fast eater! We had help with our server who guided us what was good and we all enjoyed everything we ordered. The cauliflower was so addictive. Loved its thin batter! Wagyu and chicken were both tasty and we all ordered a cocktail and shared a bottle of rose.

It was a good night out and I would definitely come back.
Dominic Svensson
Heh heh, Tequila's "spicy" chicken tastes EXACTLY like Guzman's non-spicy chicken. They delivered well for some flour tortillas and meat and a corn salad but you can easily get equivalent food for half the price.

Really nice place with a great atmosphere. We went with a group of 4 and shared a whole heap of starters and mains. The starters were really nice with the kingfish tiradito, mixed mushroom tacos and soft shell crab tacos being standouts but they were all pretty good.

However the mains were a let down with the wagyu steak being pretty tough and chewy and the charcoal chicken being pretty plain. The kindler potatoes had an overpowering tandoori flavour to it and didn’t go down well. We did have a tonne of mojitos and they went down a treat and were pretty nice.

Shame about the main because if they were standard of the starters then this place would have been brilliant, but still good overall.

So yummy! Love the food, especially the soft shell crab taco.. and the cocktails are divine! Can’t wait to go back!

Latin American food in Paddington. Officially the best eats I’ve ever had in Paddington is Tequila Mockingbird. It may be a bold statement, but I encourage you to try for yourself. Every dish was refreshing, vibrant, energetic and extremely flavourful. Least to say, Chef Jon Is a culinary genius.

We are here with a group of 12. The service was amazing but the food was not. We were all so disappointed in the quality and taste of the food. We did the banquet and they asked if we had any dietary requirements, which 3 of us did. They brought out minimal food for those 3 which was disappointing. I had a tofu taco that was cold and tasteless, and a barramundi which was stringy and chewy. I eat a lot of seafood and I’ve never seen/tasted barramundi like this. It wasn’t fresh and I couldn’t eat it. We also felt it was very overpriced considering the quality and quantity of food in the banquet.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
(4.5 stars)
It’s hard to know where to begin with Tequila Mockingbird, because this spot does a lot of things well. The restaurant is named, not for the fabulous figurine Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 set off to Mexico to recover, but, in an apparent moment of synchronicity, when owner Michael Fegent drew his own inspiration directly from Harper Lee’s book, To Kill A Mockingbird. Fegent also drew inspiration from his travels across South America and Mexico to come up with a menu and setting that takes you on an epic road trip, all without leaving Paddington. You'll find his resulting restaurant arranged across three levels of a heritage-listed 1898 terrace that's been delicately updated by Luchetti Krelle to softly reflect the journey you'll be taking. Now, if we’re going...

Love, love this place and love the name. Friendly staff and scrumptious dishes. And given the name, they have a superb bar and cocktail list. We don’t have that many South American eateries in Sydney and so pleased to say that this one is a winner! #southamericanfood #tacos #guacamole

The staff were very accommodating. The food was freshly prepared and delicious. There was a good variety of drinks and cocktails to choose from. The only disappointment was the dessert menu. I felt it was very basic and didn’t really tie into the the South American cuisine. Other than that, it was a pleasant experience!
Alice Domenis
Nice place, nice atmosphere, excellent quality food, service was a little sketchy but staff tried to make up for any mistake in a friendly professional way.
Kathy
Staff were extremely nice but was sometimes were hard to hear as they spoke very soft. Food was really good and was a great experience. Will definitely be back.

Simply put this place made my night. Wow wouldn’t even do it justice. It’s not just the food that was great, it’s the staff, the atmosphere and amazing drinks on hand to make you feel like you’re actually at a bar in Latin America. A must for all !!
Alex
Exceptional food in a fantastic atmosphere. The signature cocktails are fantastic and the staff are very friendly and polite. We had an amazing time.
TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD is calling your name people, it yearns for long boozy meals matched with impressive Latin American cuisine that will make you swoon and order that extra mezcal. Some of the best food I have eaten this year in a wonderful venue, and don't get me started on the drinks.
Full review is now up on Spooning Australia.

All the entrees were amazing. I would give them a 9/10. The soft shell crab taco, crispy shrimp taco, eggplant nachos and the empanadas were delicious. Would recommend them all very highly. The corn lollipops were sweet and crunchy! The crispy pork was nice enough but I wouldn’t feel the need to order it again. The potatoes were already covered in this mayo type sauce. I’d recommend just leaving it on the side as a dipping. But overall the restaurant had a really nice atmosphere and vibe for a lazy Sunday lunch! Dessert was really good. Chocolate fondant with chocolate filled churros and blueberry sorbet to balance it out.

What a great date restaurant!! The atmosphere was just right and the service impeccable.

The 75pp tasting menu is definitely the way to go, make sure you are in for the night though as it is a two hour sitting.

We unfortunately missed out on the carpaccio, but the kingfish and the ceviche taco more than made up for it.

My favourite from the street menu was the oxtail empanada, and the lamb to follow was fantastic if not a little too much food for two people.

Highly recommend!

The cocktails were also amazing.
I've always wanted to try the food here because of the amazing name, and decided to book it for my gf's birthday. The service was second to none, and the food was equally as good. We were over ordering as I was unaware of the portion sizes, and the waiter kindly suggested we removed one of the tapas, and he was exactly right. We had the guac, kingfish ceviche which was amazing! Also don't skip on the brussels sprouts! The provolone was also wonderful because it had the sweetness from the onion jam. I also noted that the reservation was for a birthday, so they brought out our (also mindblowing) dessert with a candle. Price was well worth it and we walked out extremely fulfilled.
QueenBee
Modern restaurant with a nice feel, went there with a dimmi offer a while ago and had the banquet with a girlfriend. We thoroughly enjoyed your dinner and cocktails, dessert were on the money too. It was quite new at the time and I was very impressed. Service was nice too. Will be back at some stage.

You have to give this place a try. Super delicious Latin American food, something that is lacking in Sydney. Very friendly and accommodating staff and the ambience is great for a romantic date night or for groups. Need to say it again, the food is amazing. Highly recommended!

Cosy and intimate ambience, High quality produce and balance of flavours is superb. Loved the raw dishes.. kingfish ceviche with tequila gel and beef tartare tostada was absolutely delish. So were the soft shell and pulled pork tacos. Wagyu beef flank with garlic butter was so tender and tasty. Perfect for a intimate date night or catch up with the girls. Will return!
Those Who Love To Eat
4 of us friends came here yesterday for the ANZAC day 5 course lunch for $45 p/head. It was our first time visiting this est. We booked a table in advance. Luckily for that, as the place was rather busy and quite packed.
The vibe of this restaurant really catered to the ultra hip. It's one of those places you come to be noticed.
Despite that...
The food was top notch and the wait staff was really lovely and accomodating. They even gave us extra corn chips for our guacamole 🖒
Everything on the 5 course menu was absolutely dee-lish! My fave was the fish caviche taco and their WG6 beef. The beef was so tender and juicy, that went really well with the jalapenos.
As for the fish caviche, the combination of flavours that exploded in your mouth when you first bite into it. Just perfect. It made all the right impressions!
This meal was decadent and super indulgent, but well worth it.
We ended the meal with dessert. 3 of us got the yuzu lemon meringue and one got the double chocolate cake. I had a taste of that and it was indeed nice but VERY rich and dense.
In saying so... I'm not a huge chocolate dessert kind of human.
All in all...
The whole experience was superb! There will defs be a return of some sort.

The food was as amazing as the photo suggests!

I was recommended to go here by someone who said it was the best food they have had in Sydney. It defiantly did not disappoint. I went here with my boyfriend for our 2 year anniversary and both got the $85 tasting menu. We could not fault anything, everything was exciting, unique and tasty. The staff looked after us well and took the time to explain the menu highlights. From the cantstopeatingit guacamole with plantain chips to the drool worthy wagyu beef it was all excellent and couldn’t recommend it enough.
Roseanna Giannas
Such a cute little find! We had the $85 tasting menu and every dish that came out was so tasty!
Will definitely go back to tequila mocking bird
Jessica Ferguson
I came here with my husband and am so keen to return. We got the $65 set menu, and I honestly can't fault anything on the menu. The service was great. All the staff made sure I got a new cocktail when my previous one had finished. I'm usually a wine drinker, but had to try their signature cocktail after reading so many glowing reviews. I'm so glad I did as it was so yummy! Keep up the great work. I can't wait to return.

Completely fell in love with this cute South American restaurant in Paddington, the ambiance is so adorable and the Latin tunes and extensive drinks/cocktail menu really gives you the feel that you are sitting in some hidden treasure in Colombia or Peru.
I ordered the scallop and king fish ceviche, beef cheek empanada, flank steak with a side of chimichirri instead of the jalapeño butter as I don’t eat spicy food as well as the side of potatoes, all the flavors explode in your mouth. I saw that they had Pisco sours so asked for a maracuya (passion fruit) one and it was perfect, exactly like the one I had in Peru. The ceviche was quite different to what I’m used to with the coconut cream but the hints of finger lime really balanced out the whole dish. My boyfriend had the rib eye and I had the flank steak which were both so delicious, my boyfriend also was going crazy for the pickled jalapeños we agreed 3rd best steak we have ever eaten.

Tequila Mockingbird whips up on the exotic flavours of Latin America and is a contemporary addition to the colourful restaurants at Five Ways.

Housed in a beautifully restored mid-Victorian terrace with rendered facade, arched doorways and cantilevered balconies with decorative cast iron balustrades, the slender terrace was tweaked and lined with tequilas and mezcals which stretched into a fringe courtyard.

I ordered three of the solid and decent tapas and their signature tequila Mockingbird cocktail. The sensational snapper and scallop ceviche was served with coconut milk and finger lime. The raw scallops were springy and fitted flawlessly with the milky and tingling onions and finger lime.

Next, the braised beef cheek empanada was crispy and buttery on the outside and juicy on the inside. The chive and egg added texture to the flavourful empanada and the beef cheeks were not too dry.

Last but not least, the grilled chorizo served with roasted pepper chimichurri was typical and nothing too fanciful.

In conclusion, food at Tequila Mockingbird was decent and the chefs were meticulous and took special care to make sure the dishes were presentable and tasty. However, the watered down flavours were slightly disappointing and there were not any memorable dishes which would nudge me to return to the restaurant.

I loved everything about it:
- great cocktails and very original (I tried the Piscojito)
- the food was beautiful, tasty and very creative (the semifredo with rhubarb and quinia we had for dessert was sooooooooo good)
- the staff was friendly and made great suggestion

Tequila Mockingbird is such a catchy name for a restaurant. I head to Paddington on a sunny Sunday with Matt and we have heard lots of wonderful things about their food so we have high expectations. FOR FULL review and photos, please go to the blog post

Disclaimer: thanks to Zomato for the voucher to Tequila Mockingbird

First impressions: is this just a bar? Don't let this scare you if your here just for food. You can't see from the front that there is a dining area inside and upstairs

Food: the menu focuses on sharing plates with a Latin American twist. Most of the presentation of the food look like pieces of Art,your not sure if you should eat it! Instragrammers would have a photo field day here

Pulled goat shoulder quesadilla, tomatillo salsa verde: a MUST try! While I enjoyed the quesadilla,it's the tomatillo salsa verde that you must try and keep on your table to use on every and any dish possible. I'm weak with spicy food but this just had a little kick to it. Flavour explosion in my mouth,DON'T let them take this away from you, they should bottle this stuff and sell it and make millions! If you didn't know by now this is my favourite dish!

Ceviche taco: wonton skin shell hey! That's something different. I enjoyed the mixture of ingredients that come together well

Celeriac soft shell taco: is that a melon peel around? That's what it looks like. Only the missus tried this as she didn't want to share because it tastes so good. Like the presentation

Eggplant nachos, black bean purée,aji panca: I was expecting more,I felt like the ingredients didn't mix well with each other

Beetroot cause, Qld spanner crab, salsa criolla: love the presentation, like the taste. A beetroot fan here and I like how the taste is not overpowering

Mixed bean salad: what I like is what KFC use to make (that's how old I am!) There version is also good. My second fav dish, sometimes your mouth implodes because of too much vinegar in a bean salad ,they've somehow made this with the right amount of acidity and it makes for a great taste, the Laban is a great touch

Bbq lamb rump: what I hate with lamb is when it's too chewy, not a issue here. Lentils also a plus and it goes well with the salsa

Charcoal chicken, anchiote peanut sauce: I feel like the sauce needs to be slightly stronger in taste but otherwise a enjoyed this

Service: we were greeted promptly and lead to our table. The service the whole time we were there was good. Staff were friendly, approachable, had a sense of humour, easy to get there attention and explained each dish with a smile on there faces. Im thankful also that we were told mains are going to take longer than the other dishes otherwise I would be starving

Ambience: a restored terrace house with a particular tall plant popping out of the ground and upstairs sum views and fresh air. The toilet made me smile,I like the layout and the little Mexican doll was a plus,it changed it from your your plain boring toilet to something interesting

In no way eating here thanks to Zomato has influenced my score. If a place is crap, people will know and find out for themselves. You can't hide the truth. I report what my taste buds tell me and they say YES! When you come visit you will find out that you are lucky to find this little hidden gem,it's worth the trip! I felt though I've tried a lot, there is plenty more here to try

My partner in foodie crime that day,Passionate Foodies review is worth reading l

You must get yourself to Tequila Mockingbird, stat. It's high ranking is well-deserved, and we could provide a detailed review, but others have already done so, and very eloquently at that.

Let's just talk about the chimichurri instead. An Andean chimichurri accompanies the lovely pink, tender, melt-in-the-mouth BBQ lamb rump. Berkshire free range pork feather blade is served with pickled jalapeños, lemon cheek and petite jar of an altogether different chimichurri which we are informed is made from dried herbs. Both dishes from the flame grill are nicely complemented by a plate of charred broccolini, mole and grated egg yolk.

The meals are designed to be shared and the starters on the menu are divided into the "Raw Bar", "Streets" and "Between", providing a wonderful choice of exquisite bites to mix and match before the main event from the "Flame Grill". I could wax lyrical about the ceviche taco, aji amarillo - this is no ordinary taco, but a subliminal fusion of flavours and textures. The seared scallop is simply beautiful, a plump bivalve presented in its shell on a mound of corn and popcorn crumb and perfect shaving of pickled jicama. Every dish was a delight for the tastebuds, culminating in desserts that completed dinner on the sweetest note.

As we enter the cooler months, Tequila Mockingbird is a cosy venue to enjoy a sumptuous meal. Service is warm, attentive and refined, ensuring a particularly special dining experience. Thank you to Michael and all the team at Tequila Mockingbird for a wonderful dinner. Can't wait to return!

Great lil Mexican place. We ended up here through a Dimmi voucher for 50% off. Incredible food. The staff were amazing. In fact Ruben deserves a pay rise!! Whatever he's on, it's not enough! We will definitely be returning!!

This place looks deceivingly small from the outside but provides pleasant surprises inside. I find the same thing with the food. My partner in crime Sydneyguyrojoe is kind enough to invite me to join his Peruvian culinary adventure. Instead of stealing his thunder, I would simply list the dishes that impress me most.

1. Beetroot causa, Qld spanner crab, salsa criolla
This dish has me at hello. Well designed, beautifully crafted and elegant in taste. I can feel the beetroot dancing slowly with my tongue while the Qld spanner crab is playing violin entertaining my taste buds. Let's not forget the salsa criolla which is to die for.
2. Mixed bean salad, salted cucumber, labna
Never in my life had I imagined a bean dish can taste this good. Those who find it difficult to sell the beans to your kids should let them try this dish. Another fresh, flavoursome and perfectly balanced dish.
3.Eggplant nachos, black bean puree, aji panca
The eggplant is little bit tangy and really shows who's the boss in this dish. It was the black bean puree with aji that keeps me in "mind boggling" state.

4.Ceviche taco, aji amarillo
A fun dish to have, aji sauce is not too overpowering so it really suits almost anyone from any age and culture. I don't believe anyone can fail this dish.

I did have the Charcoal chicken dish which is not as impressive as the other. Maybe I was expecting Cajun/Peri Peri/El Jannah style chicken but get none of those. Overall it is a very nice experience despite It took a while for the dishes to come out. Strongly suggest you have approx two hours parking. Just remember that good things take time.

Found this gem a few months ago and recommend it to anyone reading this! My personal favourite was the dry aged rib eye with garlic jalapeno butter...seriously heavenly stuff. Finish the meal with their cheese selection and a few cocktails and you'll leave happy as lark👌

Amazing and quirky! Hidden in the hilly heeled st of Paddington a small but intimate restaurant catches your attention. Beautiful, relaxing na peaceful ambience - food was different for pallet, But loved the salt cod. Pleasantly surprised

One of the best meals I have had in Sydney. Couldn't fault the food, particularly the salmon and the lamb, staff were without exception personable and onto it, drinks (particularly the Tequila Mockingbird) were fantastic. Will be there as much as I can.

A new-ish bar in Paddington serving delicious cocktails. A little on the pretentious side of things and staff were kinda grumpy, but we enjoyed ourselves regardless. Keen to go back and try some of the food and hopefully some happier staff will be around.

A late lunch has never been more satisfying!🍴🍸 @tequilamockingbirdrestaurant sport an interesting inbetween menu you can really sink your teeth into👌🏻 Their twist on traditional Latin American dishes is both unique & flavoursome. Great little bar restaurant with an open kitchen and pretty courtyard aspect. The food is South American style with beautiful fresh dishes to suit all tastes. The customer service is very attentive. I highly recommend the dry aged rib eye and the fried provolone with garlic mushrooms.

I visited Tequila mocking bird twice this week; once for dinner with my wife and also for Sunday lunch with my foodie friend Random Din Dins. This relatively new restaurant opened two months ago. The space is a converted two story terrace situated on the five ways Paddington. The downstairs portion comprises a stylish bar, an open kitchen, where you can see the chefs cooking over an open flame barbeque. This then opens up into a courtyard dining area decorated with hanging gardens. Upstairs is a small bar and two more dining spaces with a retractable roof making it ideal for day time dining.

The front of house service run by Reuvin is very professional, the wait staff are experienced, friendly and accomodating with a good dynamic. Most having worked together in past ventures. They are passionate about the restaurant they are working in and it shows.

As the name suggests, this place has an extensive tequila list, not the kind you shoot with lemon and salt, that makes you cringe just thinking about. The tequila here is refined, smooth and easy drinking. Order a glass, two maybe more - sip and enjoy. I tried the Casamigo, a tequila created by George Clooney and Cindy Crawfords husband Randy Gerber: definitely recommended.

Food wise, the menu is latin inspired from Mexico to Argentina and every where in between. The meals are designed to share make this place ideal for socialising. On the menu there are a number of small bites as well as flame grilled meats for something more substantial and if you still have room at the end, desserts. If you find it hard to choose, there are a few banquet options.

For starters: from the raw bar the ceviche tacos were super tasty: shells made out of fried wonton wrappers. Fresh ingredients and texture added by the taco shell made them very moreish. The beetroot cured salmon carpaccio with passionfruit was also a delicious appetiser.

The street food inspired alpaca, mozzarella empanadas and the celeriac soft shell crab tacos are sure to spark your interest.

I highly recommend the next dish: the fried provolone, garlic and muchrooms. Load some of the molten cheese and mushrooms onto the crisp bead, amazingly good.

You cannot go wrong with their proteins: the 14 hour slow cooked, fall off the bone lamb shoulder served with a red chimichurri had me salivating. My favourite, a magnificent cut of 6 week dry aged rib eye on the bone. Simply delicious, melt in your mouth and add the slight kick from the jalepeno butter, so goood.

Unfortunately on both occasions we fell short of dessert. That is ok, just another reason to return to this exciting new restaurant. A very enjoyable dining experience.

Great service, lovely aesthetic, delicious food and even better cocktails! I went with a rather difficult friend who is hard to please at times, they were very accommodating, informative and great with menu recommendations - even she was impressed! I would give it 15/10 👍🏼

Such a cool new restaurant! My friend and I had a great time at Tequila Mockingbird, everything was just stunning. Their take on Latin American food was fresh and modern, the service was on point and the venue was super funky. Totally craving another round of their mushroom ceviche and a banana alfajor.
Can't wait for our next visit.

This has to be one of my favourite restaurants in Inner Sydney. It is rare that you have a meal that is practically faultless from start to finish, but Tequila Mockingbird delivers on all fronts. The standout dishes for me were the ceviche tacos, white fish tiradito, soft shell crab tacos, octopus chimichurri and the BBQ lamb shoulder. Can't wait to go back!
Shona
Went to this great restaurant with a friend - we are both vegetarian and there was loads of different veggie options. We had mushroom ceviche and the beetroot tacu tacu both amazing and pan fried mushroom provolone as a main is delicious. Lovely atmosphere, great selection of cocktails and v friendly staff..would definitely recommend and will absolutely be back!

Amazing food and great service. I have been there a few times and definitely recommend it. I had the chef testing menu and tried some of the signature cocktails, it was absolutely delicious! High quality product, lovely staff, very good atmosphere : all you need for a perfect diner ;-)

Great food, great service, killer drinks and an outstanding venue. The squid is a must. The bartenders are especially good looking. Love having such a unique venue in Paddington.

Best food, cocktails with mescal (tequila mockingbird) the crab tacos, rib eye with the jalapeño butter, the ambience of the whole place with great people attending to you, and the best chefs. Had such a great night and meal here. Highly recommend it. Awesome wine range and the deserts, love it.
Nicole Johnson
Amazing food, amazing service. Great place to have lunch or dinner with all the outdoor space. Style of food is different and fresh, I loved the ceviche tacos and slow cooked lamb charred over the open flame BBQ. Highly recommend it, will be back.

I love, love, loooved this place. You know when you still talk about your great lunch experience to friends a week later that it was something special.
Set in a gorgeous restored terrace house right by Five Ways in Paddington, you walk in via a narrow entrance with a grand wooden bar. The back of the house is an open living space and courtyard with a huge clear roof over the courtyard, allowing lots of light into leafy space.

If you've ever been to Latin America, one look at the menu will make your heart smile as you'll recognise all the favourites you will have eaten on many street corners. There are five sections of the menu: raw, streets, between, flame grill and garden.

Our ceviche tacos and white fish tiradito were superb. Beetroot tacu tacu were delicious, and a highlight was the flame grilled aged rib eye. Lots of flavour in all of our dishes and an all round fantastic meal. Full review available on:
