Good food, fast service, nice staff. Warehouse conversion with log fire. We had the pulled pork eggs benedict and avocado/feta whip. Both were excellent.
Sharing the same building with a cycling inspired training studio, Giddyup Mule can be best described as having split personality. The woody industrial chic interior exudes a sense of calmness and warmth yet when classes are being held, you are bombarded with doof doof music and chants of encouragement for you to "pick up your pace". It's a bit nerve-wrecking when all you want to do is enjoy a relaxing breakfast. Despite this, don't let this deter you from dropping by. The service is charming and our lovely waitress was ever so kind and patient with one of the chatty little girls we were babysitting that day. Great service aside, the food hit the mark too. Those with food intolerance or the health conscious foodies will be spoilt for choices. Paleo and gluten-free dishes share the menu with burgers and raw sweet treats. I was impressed with my pulled pork egg benedict - the apple slices was a nice touch and add a bit of tartness to an otherwise heavy dish. The duck burger was a bit oily but the flavour was spot on. The little girls enjoyed their banana and blueberries smoothies with goji berries and coconut flakes. Great way to get the kids to eat something healthy. I felt that my skinny latte could be stronger but may be I was just still half asleep as it was too early in the morning. All in all, a great place to fuel up before starting a long day ahead.
Off the beaten Yarraville cafe track, and two-doors separation from Woven's, Giddy Up mule offers spacious premises, trendy decor, and very comfortable seating areas. The place is usually quiet, zen like mood, chill-out people, ambience and staff. If you don't have kids and are trying to avoid the kids hordes populating Yarraville cafes, this is your cafe as I have found mostly adults.
The menu changes often and they have an interesting selection of dishes and flavours,, and they really make an effort to plate their dishes beautifully. They have a strong focus on healthy food, which is great. The mix of flavours and textures has been great at times and bland others. I think when you prepare an out-of-the-ordinary dish you have to get the seasoning, moisture and texture right so everything works as an ensemble in your mouth; otherwise the food is bland. This is me being picky, of course. I thought the food and the place were good enough.
Coffee is lovely, medium strength and well prepared. I like mine a bit stronger but I cannot fault theirs. They have mugs Alleluia!
Their selection of Tonic teas is wonderful. I especially love the coconut and pineapple tea, so much so that I ended bringing home some. It is a light, flavoursome tea, not sweet but with a hint of natural sweetness to it, and really refreshing.
Giddy up Mule has one of the nicest staff in the area, really welcoming lovely people.
PLUS
Ample parking area for bicycles inside!
MINUS
If I ask what is in a dish, I expect a waiter to tell me, exactly what the dish is and has. It makes a difference because customers notice this, especially when two different customers ask the same question and there is no answer. What about walking to kitchen and asking the chef? That is part of a good service and part of treating customers with respect. Shrugging shoulders and guessing sends the vibe "I don't give a dam about this food or this place". Just saying.
