Review Gin Long Canteen - Adelaide

donald dong
Food is served quickly and the taste is good. Was going to give a five star review until the very last minute when big chunk of big hair was spot on the slow cook pork, then the coconut we order only been open a small hole, not really enough to take out the coconut meat using a spoon that was provided for that purpose. It was a bit pricy as well, spent $87 for two adults and a child. However, Alex the waiter is the best, simply polite and professional, attend to your needs promptly.

Spacious with a street night vibe. This place makes you feel like you're dining in Asia. The chrysanthemum soda was quite tasty and had a stronger flavour, better than the others. Crispy eggplant was good, but not the crispiest. Ribs were amazing, so addictive, can just dive into a lot of it. So tender and fatty. Braised pork belly was pretty good too, had a thick layer of fats. Prawn dumplings came in a very tasty sauce. Good entre to have. This place gets packed quite regularly. Best to make a booking. Overall, it was a good experience and would go back

Busy place for dinner on a Weds night. Not cheap, but dishes were tasty. Favourites for us were the green rice squid, pomegranate chicken, lychee duck curry and crispy eggs in XO sauce dishes. Our waitress was excellent, attentive and knew the menu well.

We had a fantastic dinner at GL Canteen! Make sure you nab a booking because the place fills up quick. Friendly service with a funky, contemporary Asian menu. A particular favourite was the lobster slider - do yourself a favour and order one.

Absolutely beautiful food! All the staff were very friendly and caring! Will be back!

Exceptional service firstly! Service with a smile. Lamb ribs is a MUST, was so smoky and full of flavour, 4 pieces per serve. S&P eggplant was nice but it was 4 massive pieces battered so didnt have enough surface area for flavour. Lastly we ordered the squid salad which was nice but waaay too sweet, had to ask for some extra lemon wedges to dilute it. Would definitely go back to try again. 2nd visit: Food was a tad on the sweet side. Still nice but think I’ve everything I wanted to try on the menu and there’s nothing that is very signature that will lure us back in the short term

One of my favourite date night restaurants ever. The netted spring rolls are to die for and their other vegetarian options are full of flavour! Would also recommend the gin long coconut gin cocktail, it is very moreish. We have always had amazing service from Alex and the other workers! Can't wait to eat here again!

Most of the meals were pretty decent, specifically the duck and braised pork. As for the chow mien, would you like some mould with that? Sheesh. The mullet special also was missing the meat. Staff was pretty good and dealt with the issue of the mullet with a discount, but the chow mien issue we didn’t even notice until we got home. Staff are a bit over attentive though, but rather them too friendly than not at all.

Rave rave rave! Absolutely loved my meal here! It was full of flavour and the atmosphere was awesome. To top it off, all staff were extremely accommodating and friendly! Big thumbs up to Gin Long Canteen! Will definitely be recommending to absolutely bloody everyone!

Awesome from start to finish. Had 3 of us so we opted for Set Menu options but didn't have enough people for the banquet, no dramas. We left the ordering in the hands of the staff. Multiple entrees and a fantastic selection of mains to share. Braised beef was amazing, the duck was great but the chicken was the highlight. I cannot fault anything. Loved it.

I had the salt & pepper tofu salad which was delicious. Great flavour, filling yet not a heavy meal. I had a juice to drink & was a bit disappointed to be handed a straw & plastic cup filled with a pre-packaged juice. However the barman happily gave me a wine glass to serve it when I asked him for a glass instead of drinking out of the plastic container. Some ice would have been nice too, in hindsight. The waitstaff were very friendly & helpful. I'd definitely go back.

Had another great night! Service was good, food was great!... all of it! prawn dumplings, the netted spring rolls, satay chicken, the slow cooked pork was to die for & so was the basil chicken ... can't wait to go back again !

Had a super delicious dinner tonight and the slow cooked braised beef was sooo good. Ying was a superstar and made our night even better. She can poor a bottle of wine with style. Thanks Ying your great!

The staff were all absolutely amazing and accommodating. We were a party of 3 but desperate to try the banquet so the made arrangements for us so we could try as many dishes as possible. Their outfits were super cute too. The food was fast, fresh and absolutely mouth watering. Can't wait to come back for round 2. Keep up the good work.

We had the most amazing meal in Gin Long last night with my family. We ordered heaps to share and everything was great. The barramundi was especially sensational. Will definitely come back!

I'm wondering why they're calling it a canteen when the food, ambiance and price are like in a Five star restaurant in Manila. It's a bit pricey but the food is great.
Chris Lanthois
Tried to book but they don’t take reservations. Had to wait for a table when we arrived but the food was amazing, well worth the wait.
Tony Mumford
Great place to chillaxe and great food the staff are always welcoming and fun to be around

Walking out of Gin Long Canteen with a big doggie bag of coconut rice and vego curry, I was one chuffed mung bean, because if there is one thing that I love, it's restaurant leftovers. One of my friends and I met here for dinner after work on a Thursday evening, and I was honestly shocked at how busy it was for a North Adelaide eatery. The restaurant is large and bustly, and filled up with hungry punters as early as 6pm. With lots of conversation to catch up on, my gal pal and I ordered Gin Longs cocktails and juices to sip on, while taking our time to peruse the menu. Eventually we decided on some munchies, and everything was exceptional - right down to the rice which was an unexpected standout! The portions were generous enough that there was more than enough for my lunch the next day, too. Gin Long are offering takeout at the moment, so there's no excuses not to try for yourself. I will definitely be grabbing some Uber Eats over the next couple of weeks. In fact I can hardly wait...maybe tonight instead!

Still very crowded and super noisy after 8:30 on Friday night. Most dishes were exceptionally good. We loved the chargrilled trout and vege yellow curry so much that we ordered another serve each. The lamb curry and pomegranate chicken were also good. Personally I didn’t like dragon beef curry as it wasn’t tender enough. Still highly recommended.

This place just has a great vibe, magnificent service from friendly staff, food was exemplary and prices that are affordable. If I could give it 5+ I would, do your self a favour and give it a try.
Magda Nosal
AMAZING! Favourite dishes: netted spring roll, banh hoi, pomegranate chicken, slow braised thai beef... and OMG you need to try the coconut rice. I would order plates of it.

I been this restaurant in my last visit the food is quite well and main thing u should prefer this restaurant for ambience...I hope my review is helpful
MrCreosote
I came here for a work dinner some years ago, don’t really remember it being particularly noticeable, but in town with my lovely wife and 15yo son and we decided to eat here. It was fantastic! Could not fault anything, every dish was great and generous. Drinks were good, service was attentive, pleasant and helpful. Would definitely go back again!<br/>If you are looking for a quiet place for an intimate dinner, go somewhere else. You will probably pay more and have worse food, but this place is noisy (in a good way) and has a vibrant atmosphere, so as a setting for an intimate dinner, it’s probably not great. If on the other hand you are looking for superb food with good value for money, then go here. Might be best to book, just to be safe.
Hannah
Service was lovely, food came very quickly. Prices were excellent. Eggplant is a must! They substituted meat for vego option, which was great!

Looking for a quick bite, I stumbled across this gem. You would barely know it was there but once inside, the freshness, bustle and open kitchen is very modern, very cool and feels authentically Asian in a way that many restaurants fail. Without having to try too hard, Gin Long succeeds at every turn; the food itself is spot in with some good variety (without offering 50+ options!) Including some fresh takes on classic Asian dishes. A definite must try!!!

Absolutely scrumptious food - the Red Duck Curry was the best I’ve had and the soft shell crab with curry mousse yummo - will go again - the Mary Martini was smooth and well made - sticky banana dessert also delicious - lobster was a little chewy but the sauce was great .
Linda
Fantastic!!! They’ve nailed it!!! Great flavours, quality produce, cooked to perfection, super fair portions, good hospitality and sleek venue. If I were local, I would become a regular!
JCL
Place was really cool. Staff were A+ very nice helpful and quick. Food looked great coming out. <br/>My meal was a let down for me, basil chicken didn’t have enough chilli quite bland in the end. <br/>Beers were slightly expensive. <br/>I would try again with a different meal.
Thomas Nordin
Great food, lovely service! Staff very attentive and always helpful - one of our fav places to dine!<br/>The soft shell crab is a MUST, have it would steamed rice and it's amazing!

I must say I was very excited trying this place out, seeing amazing insta photos and raving zomato reviews. I was in need of a fave place to replace the ones I so missed in Melbourne. My excitement went up another notch as we enter the premises. It reminds all these groovy eating places I am used to. We came here for lunch and opted for special lunch menu. I had the Lemongrass bitters to begin with. Definitely something different but I must I say I do prefer the original. For meals, my husband had The Prickwillow rice - hainanese chicken is one of his favourite dishes so he was looking forward to this. I had settled with the Hu Tieu Nam Vang. The meals didn't take too long to come out and they looked pretty good. After my obligatory photo taking we started to dig in. Alas, the first sip of that side soup almost made me gag, I am aware that my palate leans more to less salty dishes and unfortunately, I was not prepared for one salty sip. I don't know what went wrong, but I can just imagine that one bowl contained my one week worth of salt dietary requirement. Keeping in mind that could just be the soup. When my meal came out both my husband and I was expecting the char siu pork, but it was not there I mixed my dish hoping that the soy dressing was just sitting at the bottom of the bowl but after trying it, it was the opposite of the soup! It was so bland. What happened to the soy dressing? We're they trying to balance the salty soup and bland main dish? If that is the case then they sure have achieved their aim. Mind you, they have soy sauce and shiracha on the side so that can fix whatever you think is lacking on your dish. My husband found his chicken breast dry but the chicken rice was wonderful. I can't fault the service though, they were welcoming, friendly and accommodating. They were happy enough to give us fresh chilli on the side. I don't think I will come back here anytime soon.

Hardly ever fails.<br/>Fresh tasty food, friendly staff.<br/>Efficient service, busy most of the time.<br/>Excellent value for lunch, Great $12 choice of dishes.<br/>Delicious shredded Pork rib salad.<br/>Must return soon!

This buzzing Asian venture offers a modern take on classics with a fun and fresh atmosphere. Perfect for sharing or if decisions prove too difficult the banquet menu by the staff is the perfect way to go.
Pete
Fast and fantastic! I liked it and will most definitely come back when I visit Adelaide South Australia again. My wife says that when you close your eyes and eat the Banh Hoi Pork starter then you know that it is the best food you have ever eaten!
Foodleee
Really loved the $12 Laksa! I've been here before and I still haven't forgotten the netted spring rolls! So damn good. The Laksa is 100% just as good. Drinks take a while to come out and they don't have coke. But the food.... spot on!
Global Gastronomista
Great place for dinner after work, great place for dinner any day really! Staff were welcoming and the food was perfect! Modern take on some classic south-east Asian classics. The cocktails are tasty too! Highly recommended!

I love taste of every bite of food, but the staff were too rude. They don’t let us sit on the empty tables since they have decided for large group of people. We sat in front of bar tender who were serving opposite to us.

It was my first time at Gin Long on Saturday night. It lived up to the hype. Packed from wall to wall. As 2 walk ins we were concerned we would be waiting some time for a table- this wasn't the case. We were seated in 5 minutes but not before having a drink at the bar.<br/><br/>We were seated at the window booths looking out over onto O'Connell. Not a lot of room if you are ordering dishes to share.<br/><br/>Having a look at the menu I won't lie, I was slightly disappointed. Chicken and noodle dishes were markedly absent. Pricing somewhat more expensive than one would expect for the portion. None the less we were very impressed by what we did order and the food came out in a timely manner. <br/><br/>We ordered<br/>Eggplant entree <br/>Chop suey <br/>Pomegranate Chicken<br/>Slow cooked Duck Curry<br/>Side of Jasmine rice <br/><br/>There is no doubt I'll be returning- but it probably will be a while between drinks.
Caitlin Thomas
Can't fault the food at all at this place. <br/>Absolutely devoured the pomegranate chicken and really slow cooked braised pork belly. Actually licked the plates cleaned. Staff were awesome and food came out quick.<br/><br/>Only slightly annoying thing is not being able to book a table for a small amount of people. We had to wait about 20 mins for a table, however we did go at 7pm on a Saturday night. <br/><br/>Overall this food was amazing and will definitely be eating here for many times to come! <br/>

Food is always fresh and balanced. Fun fast paced environment. Staff is always super lovely and happy to cater for any allergies. They easily and effortlessly provide great service and always willing to recommend something new and delicious to try.

Gin Long is a great place to dine. The atmosphere is fun and the food is delicious. Lots to choose from, banquets available for a group or simply choose some dishes to share. Flavours are true to the Thai experience, my favourite are the rice paper spring rolls which are super tasty. Prices are reasonable too and they do lunchtime specials. Give them a go, you will enjoy

Coming from Melbourne the foodie capital Gin Long didn't disappoint. Awesome service, fresh and very tasty food. A must have is the Beef Back Rib. Well worth the visit if you're in Adelaide.

Went here for dinner last night. Great vibe and energy and enthusiastic staff. The menu looks like a share menu but all tables seemed to be ordering their own dishes which I did too. I had the red dragon curry ($23) and brown rice ($4) which was delicious tender beef in a medium spice curry. I would have liked it with less beef and some vegetables added to make it a complete meal. With a glass of McLaren Vale GSM ($10) I was a happy diner.
Jamie Hull
Great food, and great service. We had the banquet and the best dish I had was the duck curry very delicious. Will be recommending it and definitely going back again.
Natasha Bell
We came here for lunch and all ordered from the $12 lunch menu. I had the Beef Pho, which was delicious. Others tried another satay (?) dish which they weren't as pleased with. The food came quickly, and service was good. Modern decor and comfortable booth seating.
Tara Daunton
love this place, ordered Coconut milk chicken, which was great, fresh and tasty. Also had the soft shell crab, was nice but have tasted better.  Service was great
Sam Delbridge
Busy place, fast food service, staff all up to speed, tasty food, great drinks, good menu only Down side having wait for a table at the bar whilst waiting for a waiter to give u eye contact to place drink orders...
Fergie Food Hunter
Busy and hectic place but staff very well organised. We had a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. Food and wine arrived promptly and water provided without asking. Food not as good as I expected but would come back and try other dishes.

I love Gin Long, it been the perfect spot for girls night dinners for some time. Decor is awesome and its the perfect place if you want dress up or just head there for a good feed during the week. <br/><br/>Favourites include the slow braised beef and the dumpings they are must everytime. <br/><br/>Staff can be hit and miss from time to time... but when the foods so good, sometimes it can be overlooked.   Well worth checking out at least once.

We have been there 3 times for a beautiful home style asian cooking. The chicken, beef and salad dishes had lots of flavours. Nothing too fancy, just really nice home cooking the way my mother would, hence the "canteen" feel to it. Service was nice and staff was really accomodating with our 2 turbulent kids. We will come back.
Marcus
Amazing food and great service. The banquet is expensive, but value for money absolutely in the variety of unique and simply delicious dishes. The acoustics of the restaurant are poor so it gets very loud.
Famished
Fab food and sensational cocktails! <br/><br/>Gin Long could be described as smart casual. The staff are bubbly and fun, yet remain professional. The interior is modern, yet sophisticated. The dishes appear to be relatively simple, yet are full of flavour. They definitely have a great balance going on here. <br/><br/>Curry Puffs were also ordered, but consumed before I had a chance to snap (we were two very ravenous broads).
Chewi
The restaurant has a nice vibe to it. Great atmosphere. Food is great! Ordered the pomegranate chicken, vego green curry, slow braised pork belly (omg so good), dragon beef curry. Service is good and food came within minutes. Would recommend to come again :)
Ella Fullagar
LOVED Gin Long! Go on pay day and try everything! Super fresh and tasty with a great vibe. So many great entrees and plates to share! Will be back!
Jane
Amazing! Dined here tonight and loved it. They don't take bookings for under 6 people so we had a 20 min wait, but were ushered to the bar to while away the time. Service was so organised and efficient. Awesome duck curry and pork belly. Yummm! Will definitely return next time I'm in Adelaide.
Gracee
We had four entree and maybe 6 mains to share and every one was packed with flavour. Lovely staff and prompt service and cook time. <br/><br/>10/10!

Yes, yes, yes... The rare triple threat. Great food, service and value. Love getting the chance to get there, always get excited when I know we're going there. Win.
HoneyBintheCity
Came here 2nite for some dindins and it was excellent. Have been before and enjoyed everything and 2nite did not disappoint! Service was lovely, meals super prompt and every dish was fantastic. Duck lettuce cups & soft shell crab for entree were just filled with the right amount of spice and flavour, ur left wanting more. Then followed by slow braised beef cheek and 'really' slow pulled pork falling apart in ur mouth it's just fabulous! Accompanied with coconut rice brang out in a coconut just topped us off!<br/>Wine choices were good and atmosphere was loud, but it's so full of great energy I like it here alot! 😀😀

Love Gin Long Canteen, it's one of my regular haunts and has become the same for many of my friends I have taken there. No reservations so can be a little bit of a wait on a busy Friday or Saturday night but I find if u get there around 630 all is good. The service has always been fast and friendly and the food comes out quick too. A few of my favs would be the prawn toast, the pork ribs salad and braised pork belly with coconut rice. Just a note to those hard of hearing the inside seating area can get really loud so keep that in mind. Overall love the vibe of this place, it's fun, friendly and great food.
Adelaidefoodcentral
I first visited Gin Long Canteen nearly two and half years ago. It still how I remember it with the neon signs, the wooden furnishings and the mosaic tiled bar. One thing that has changed since my previous visit is their menu. A good selection of small plates, larger dishes and salads, all at reasonable prices. The food is a modern twist on old Asian favourites and I was certainly looking forward to what was on offer.
N
I've been here numerous of times and I always leave satisfied. There's a lot of variety on the menu and I like the tasting menu when I'm indecisive. My favourite is the really slow cooked pork belly and the coconut rice. Delish

Really average food. We wanted to love this place. We have tried it several times and it's a hit and a miss for us. <br/>Might try one more time?
Justin
Hands down the best Thai curry I have ever had in my life, even better than anything I could find in Thailand. This was a highlight in my trip to Adelaide. <br/><br/>Jerry and Chef Nu are very experienced and their passion for their food shows in both the presentation and taste. Make sure you get in early as this restaurant is always packed!

Dinner time again with the family. <br/>We came quite early so as to guarantee a table and beat the rush. <br/>Service was lovely and efficient, the main difficulty initially was trying to spot who was a waiter and who wasn't! <br/><br/>We ordered the wings, whitebait, rib and tiger fish. <br/>The whitebait was disappointing with a slight funny taste and visually looked quite dark, where you would normally expect salt and pepper whitebait to look quite light. Wouldn't recommend this dish. <br/>The rib was a surprisingly small serve, but the meat was tender and came off the bone easily. The accompany salad was bland and oily in my mouth. <br/>The chicken wings were salty.<br/>Fish was lovely but also salty, but the accompany salad and dressing were really nice. Probably the best part of the meal. <br/>Though the serving size definitely erred on the small side we did get full from all the rice we ate due to the saltiness of the chicken and fish. <br/><br/>Overall good, despite the serving sizes and prices.
Onegreedygirl
A very well designed place with a fabulous and very instagramable interior.<br/><br/>The food is quite good but some dishes are lacking in flavour.<br/><br/>The tissue boxes on the tables in lieu of napkins make for an authentically South East Asian touch.
Nicholas
One of the best restaurants in North Adelaide. Accommodating staff, great food and a great vibe too. We have celebrated my partner's birthday here and had a table of 10. We ordered the banquet. This is real sharing food, with make-your-own cold rolls and some big serves there was PLENTY to go around - and we are all big eaters. <br/><br/>A standout for me was the dragon beef curry and the larb gai. Authentic taste and consistent quality. <br/><br/>Give it a go - you will not be disappointed.
Marina Rakov
Pomegranate chicken, curry beef (Spicy), slow braised beef (so soft and tender) and curry prawns - perfect meal for 4 people who love to eat. Prawns a little disappointing - deep fried and messy, but still tasty. Fresh coconut juice - whole with flesh.
Alfred
One of the best restaurants we tried for our trip to SA back in Oct. Originally I thought it is a traditional Asian cafe but really surprised when I get there. A bit fusion and modernized design. Young and energized staffs. Foods are something difference and not just strong in favour. We hat off to the team, well done ! A few days later we just came back for a take away order as we are in a rush. We ordered our food and the staff asked us seating near the bar for waiting. After serving us some water, another waiter serves us some warm cashew nuts ! This is equivalent to a five star hotel or business class offer. What a service !
Eating Adelaide
I have been wanting to try Gin Long for a while now so finally decided to make the trip very early on a Saturday night (they don't take bookings for less than groups of 6).<br/><br/>We were seated in front of the bar and offered a drink- "The Rusty Bedspring" cocktail sounded too good to pass up- Tequila, Gin, Pama, Orange. It did not disappoint.<br/><br/>Onto meals. We opted for 3 smaller and 1 bigger plate to share and this was heaps between two people. Would have liked for the waitress to let us know how much food we were ordering. We decided on some different things I wouldn't normally go for- the prawn toasts, the Malay curry puffs and a strange 'sandwich' thing that was omletty with pickles and fried vermicelli and chilli sauce... sounds weird, and it was. But also delicious. The pomegranate chicken was a stand out.<br/><br/>Meals came out really quickly, like within 5 minutes, so we had to pace ourselves to make sure it wasn't a 45 minute in and out job. Nice vibes though and friendly staff. Would love to return with a bigger crew to try out some of the other stuff on the menu.

Yum! I have visited Gin Long Canteen with friends on a number of occasions and every single dish we've ever ordered has been delicious. It's a a crowded, noisy kind of place, but it has a great vibe. The staff are always rushed off their feet, but they somehow manage to stay friendly and calm. I have really enjoyed my nights here and would definitely go back again! Just for those of you who want a quiet retreat, this is not the place to go. Also, during the colder months make sure you take something warm to wear; I was freezing last night when I visited.
Sarah Oh
For a just "have a look and see" kind of dinner date, this turned out amazingly well. I have heard great things about Gin Long from a couple of my colleagues, so we thought we'd just head on past and see if we could get a table. Considering it was a Wednesday night, it was super busy. We got seated at the bar, which was actually quite good. We got to see the chefs preparing all of the meals and they all looked amazing. The waitress was more than happy to help us navigate the menu, offering us helpful suggestions. The food came out quickly and was really delicious. My favourite dish was the Spring rolls, they were a quirky spin on the traditional dish. I usually decide whether I like a restaurant on how likely I would be to return, and I will most certainly be returning to Gin Long in the very near future.
Monica
Asian fusion restaurants are on the up, and Gin Long doesn't disappoint. There's a variety of delectable dishes on offer, but my personal favourites are the Southern Thailand yellow curry soft shell crab and very exciting beef salad which needless to say is pretty exciting. If you're a skillful orderer, you can eat here pretty cheap with a group of people sharing meals. The modern, cool decour also lures diners in, it's always pretty full (sometimes a wait so book or come early). Although food arrives quickly, the only let down is the sometimes not as cool staff service.
MGDL
I've been a few times now and the staff are always super friendly and the table service attentive. The food is delicious, servings are huge, and it's well priced. You can't go wrong with either the slow braised beef, pomegranate chicken or braised pork belly. However, I wouldn't order the nom nom barramundi (although presented in a cool way, it's just basically fish fingers). The cocktails are also delicious with an Asian twist on a few classics.

We were just driving past O'Connell St Wednesday evening looking a for a place for dinner and thought let's give this place a try. As soon as we entered the place was buzzing. Ambiance was nice.<br/>The menu was vibrant with not too many choices to lose your way but enough to choose from. Drinks appeared to be a bit pricey (specially the cocktails, even though they looked interesting). We decided to try some Singha beer, Lychee cider and pandan soda.<br/>Coming to food, we first tried the Soft-shell crab and it was heavenly- worth every cent we paid for that. Then it was the slow-cooked beef and the meat was so tender it was falling apart in our mouth. The sauce was to die for and we ordered some rice to go with that sauce.<br/>The last one we ordered was crispy Barramundi- The dish was presented in a way which I have never seen before- interesting! Even though my friend was wondering if the skeleton structure of the burra is edible or not. It didn't take time to nibble on the crispy bit. We tried to dig in to the skeleton structure and tasted a bit bland. However the dipping sauce made it a bit more tasty but by that time we were too full.<br/>For 3 drinks, 1 entree, 2 mains with 2 serves of rice came up to be less than $100 and we left the place full and happy without any regret- that's all you need isn't?
Carmel
Came here for lunch with a friend. We didn't know what to order so we asked the friendly waitress for some advice. She was really helpful and we loved the choices she suggested. The food tasted delicious and the service was great.
WhySpeakWhenYouCanEat
For what it is, I really liked this place. I came here with 2 vegans and 2 meat eaters and they catered with ease. Food came out crazy fast and it was well priced. I would come here again, fun place to be around and nice food as well
The Streets Of Adelaide
I wasn't a big fan the first time I went to Gin Long Canteen but I waned to give it another try. <br/><br/>The cocktails were fantastic however it was pretty much downhill from there. <br/><br/>I had the prawn dumplings in red curry sauce. There was too much filling in the dumplings and I thought they were pretty bland buy a good size for a $13 entree. <br/><br/>I got the prawn and papaya salad. I asked for it without coriander. There was still some in the salad but I'll give them a second chance there because I know it's difficult at times. A could of the prawns had the poop shoot in them- that's just sloppy. There was also some shell on the top- apparent on purpose but it meant you had to pick them out of the salad to peel them. Once again it was bland. <br/><br/>I also don't like how you can't book- we don't live in Melbourne, there is no need for it. <br/><br/>Wouldn't go back anytime soon.

Nice Asian-western fusion restaurant at popular o'connell st. Food was good but not overly awesome. Presentation is impressive. Very neat and tidy. They have decent dishes, nice for sharing around rather than individual dishes for self. Staffs there in general quite friendly and helpful. Service is quite fast. The menu hasn't really change since it was open... Hoping maybe new dishes can be release so it attracts a come back. One of the signature dishes is deep fried whole fish with sweet and sour sauce. All fish fillets are very crispy and crunchy which taste so good. The entree can be a bit small to share around, suggest to order few if wanted to share. Overall not bad but doesn't make me crave or in any hurry to come back.

Gin Long Canteen, a very modern and popular restaurant located on O'Connell Street. Came here one night since this was always near the top of the "Talk of the Town" lists, so decided to tag along. The design of the restaurant was well set, everything they had see was quite modern. The staff was friendly and attentive, however sometimes it was hard to distinguish them from customers as they had no uniforms nor name tags when i went.<br/><br/>Being such a popular restaurant, I expected the food to be top notch, and I was quite excited when I saw the menu! There was a lot of dishes which I enjoy eating at other places, but  on the day I went I wasn't that hungry so only ordered one main with no sides. The food was underwhelming... it was nothing special, with the taste being nothing but sweet. The portion of the meal was also less than other restaurants, and the duck I got had next to no meat. On the bright side, the presentation of the food was quite nice, especially their barramundi.<br/><br/>Overall Gin Long Canteen didn't live up to my expectations, but with their distinctive menu especially their sides, I would come again and give them another shot to prove me wrong.

Nice atmosphere. Food was pretty good. Didn't blow me away but it was good. No wifi. Won't rush back but I'd come again for sure - if 3 monkeys across the road is full.
Mary
Walking in to an overcrowded venue gave off the impression of a long wait for a table, however it was only minutes later until I was seated. The food was served very promptly and the waitress was very polite ensuring we were satisfied with our meals. The dynamic of the restaurant works suitably well to share amongst yourself and other guests. The dishes are a little overpriced however the quality is exceptional.

Love going here because I have never been disappointed! The meals came out quickly and were full of flavour! I would highly recommend getting the banquet as the dishes they choose are always on point and it is very well priced per head! I particularly love the school prawns and slow cooked beef! The atmosphere was buzzing as usual!

Gin Long is a great choice for a night out with friends. The food is delicious and it has a great atmosphere. And it stands out because it's in North Adelaide, which boasts only a few great restaurants and a heap of mediocre restaurants.<br/><br/>Food: <br/>I've never had anything I didn't enjoy at Gin Long. I can't remember having any dish that wasn't packed full of flavour. Yes, some reviewers are correct in pointing out that a lot of the dishes are sweet, but I don't see this as a negative. This is not the type of place that you should be eating at every night of the week - this is a 'treat yo'self venue'. Balance your dishes out with some vegetables and rice and enjoy!<br/><br/>Service: <br/>The service here is friendly and relaxed. Despite the crazy hussle and bustle going on<br/> around them the chilled, young staff remain poised. <br/><br/>Ambience: <br/>It's a great location and the fitout is relevant. Gin Long is usually packed, and when it is it can be quite loud. This makes it an ideal place for a catch up with a group of friends, it might, possibly, sort-of, maybe not be the best venue for a romantic anniversary dinner though. <br/><br/>Dish to look out for: <br/>For mine, all of the dishes are pretty consistently good. I'm not sure that any one dish particularly stands out, but on my last visit I thoroughly enjoyed the really slow braised pork belly. So tasty. So tender. So very, very tender.

There’s one word for Gin Long Canteen: FUN!  It’s a great place to kick back, have some great food and cocktails in a buzzy, often loud atmosphere, and host Jerri is always entertaining.  It’s always busy here with people often being turned away at the door.  I love the tongue-in-cheek somewhat racist humour with the ‘Liesling’ (house white) and ‘Shilaz’ house red.  This night, we decided to have the “Chow Down – WOW” banquet which meant not having to make any decisions!  We loved it all – from the ‘Very Exciting Beef Salad’ to the ‘Pomegranate Chicken’.  All washed down with pandan-infused gin and a bottle or two of red wine!  A couple of my favourite dishes are the Prawn Dumplings in mild red curry sauce, and the Slow Braised Thai Beef.  Big, bold flavours from start to finish.  We were all truly satisfied – make sure you wear your fat pants!

Iv been here a few times.<br/>I'm inlove with the vibrancy the venue offers in a unique setting where you can view your food being prepped. It's fast service is always a pleasure and it's one of the best Asian inspired restaurants I have ever been to!<br/>One of my favorite things is to do the handmade cold rolls I love a hands on experience whilst chatting to friends makes things that little more interesting than just a standard dinner.<br/><br/>http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowUserReviews-g255093-d5579379-r288121775-Gin_Long_Canteen-Adelaide_Greater_Adelaide_South_Australia.html#

Hit and miss, eggs were delicious but very sweet. betel leaf beef cigars raw in the middle and bland and dipping sauce was a sweet mess. sauces were all bland for every dish with way too much sugar. Nom nom barramundi over cooked and dry sauce was sweet.... Beef salad was really good but was it supposed to be a dessert ? So much sugar in this salad. School prawns were amazing! <br/><br/>Balance issues but a very pleasant experience. If you like your Asian food sweet (cough** those honey chicken, lemon chicken and sweet n sour plum pork eaters) then you'll love the food here. For everyone else with taste, skip on dessert cause that's included in every dish.

Ordered the set menu banquet which is $39/head. The dishes come out at a good pace and the number and variety of dishes is very impressive. More importantly, the freshness, quality, flavour and presentation are first class. I was in a group of about 30 and everyone was very impressed. Normally I'd take photos of all the dishes but I enjoyed the food so much I completely forgot to take photos. The only one minor criticism is the last dish to come out was shanks with sweet potato, which normally would be great, but they didn't seem to fit with the taste journey all other dishes offered, and seemed too 'heavy' after working our way through all the other dishes.

A fantastic modern take on Asian cuisine. Great atmosphere, exceptional staff all topped off with delicious food. An experience that we loved and will love again and again.

Went back to Gin Long Canteen last week, remains a favourite! Nice easy meal, fabulous prawn dumplings, love the pomegranate chicken too! Service great!

The curries have been getting increasingly fatty and if the gin long Riesling I had tonight was from Eden Valley as stated then it was courtesy of the cats of Eden Valley which they've somehow trained to all relieve themselves in the one wine barrel. You can't charge $8 a glass for that. Your cheating your customers - shame on you Gin Ling

Friendly Service and Nice Meals. This was our first visit to Gin Long and we weren't disappointed.<br/>Not normally open on Sundays but they made an exception for Mothers Day. The restaurant was about 95% full, so the decision to open was a good one!<br/>The service was extra friendly and all the dishes arrived almost at the same time, which was excellent.<br/>Everyone enjoyed their choices - We had Prawn Salad, Prawn Dumplings, Chicken Satay Skewers, Duck Curry, Braised Pork Belly, Steamed Rice and a Vietnamese Coleslaw. It was all very delicious.<br/>Only 1 minor food complaint - The duck curry only had 4 small pieces of meat in it. The rest was skin. Upon bringing it to the attention of the Chef, we were presented with another bowl of curry, with a lot more good size pieces in it.<br/>A great gesture and very appreciated.<br/>There is no fried rice here and the main dishes are a bit light on choice but all in all, excellent service and tasty food - certainly worthy of a return visit in the future .... 8.5/10.

Didn't disappoint. I have eaten here many times and have always been impressed with the food and value for money.<br/>Only downside is the speed, great if you are in a hurry, not so much if you are catching up with friends over a meal.

Great atmosphere and lovely food.

Great fusion of food!. Love Gin Long for its vibrant atmosphere and it's fresh take on Asian cuisine that puts forgotten dishes back on the map!

LOVE!. This vibrant restaurant on O'Connell St. is definitely worth the visit! <br/><br/>Delicious food aaaaaand specialty cocktails.. Gin Long Canteen is a winner amongst the growing Asian fusion eatery's in Adelaide.

Incredibly overpriced food .. Great ambiance but I'm sure that must be included in the price of the food .. 2 dishes that were hardly authentic .. For a pop up amateur resturant, you should be ashamed to be overcharging people for such average food ... I've never felt so cheated paying for a resturant bill .. Seriously that place is all hype and that's it .. Save you $$ for a better dining experience

I like it. Great selection of foods on the menu. My partner and I came and ate a few entree dishes for a share-style dining. Everything was full of flavour and the place had a great atmosohere with some unique cocktail blends at the bar. Definitely coming back to try out some mains :)

The food is delicious!. Been there once, quite packed. But the food was awesome, like it. The staff was nice!

Wow!. This place is terrific. You may have to wait or invite friends so you can actually book for 6 or more but it is worth it - even if at the shared tables. Food is outstanding. The soft shell crab is to die for. It has a great young modern fresh vibe. Very trendy but food worth the wait.

Tasty meals. Out of my territory and so lucky to come across this vibrant eatery. Ideal for a tasty feed without lingering all night. We enjoyed sharing the Thai braised beef and the spicy caramel chicken. Great blending of tastes on both dishes. Good choice of wines by the glass. Even though it was crowded it didn't take long for a table to be available. Noticed that the tables nearby all turned over customers while were there, so waiting times must be short.

Buzzing with freshness!. Food: Delicious!<br/>Drinks: Yummy fresh coconut!<br/>Service: Can vary, from highly attentive to somewhat confused and scattered.<br/>Ambience/Feel: Buzzing, busy, trendy.<br/><br/>I had a dinner here on a Saturday evening. Only three of us so we were not able to book. We waited for approximately 50 minutes but it was at the bar while savouring a delicious fresh coconut juice. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would love to come back and try the Coconut Tiramisu (Yes!!!). Recommended.

Gin Long Canteen - You've Been Porked!. Ratings<br/>Pork: 4 / 5 <br/>Service: 3 / 5<br/>Overall: 3.5 / 5 <br/><br/>Pork Belly<br/>Really slow braised pork in sticky soy (a feast of generous pieces of pork belly with succulent juicy cuts of skin)<br/>The mustard green (Kiam Chai) is quite salty, but complements the pork very well. <br/>It's like the greens are the crackling, yet the skin balances the saltiness of the greens.<br/>Overall, I was extremely impressed with the combination of flavours. <br/><br/>Service<br/>Arrival time: 7:12pm - on Tuesday with approximately 16 people in-front of us. <br/>All tables were fully booked - (Estimated 30min wait) <br/>Booking only available for 6 or more.<br/><br/>Very warm and welcoming whilst walking through the venue.<br/><br/>Sat at the bar: 7:20pm - We waited in the bar with a cocktail (Bon Bon), and a (Chang) beer whilst we waited.<br/>It seemed there were a handful of tables free, but the turnaround and clearing of tables was quite slow.<br/>The venue was quite busy, but this didn't bother us... as we had cocktails & beer. <br/><br/>Our table is ready: 7:45pm (Approx 35min)<br/>The table soon turned into a bar next to the kitchen, giving us full view of the cooking experience.<br/>Similar to (Chin Chin) located in Melbourne.<br/><br/>The staff were very apologetic regarding our waiting time.<br/><br/>Order taken: 8:02pm <br/>01 x Nem Noung Grilled Pork - Not received<br/>01 x Beatl Leaf Cigar <br/>01 x Lamb Shank - Out of Stock<br/>01 x Slow Braised Pork Belly <br/><br/>Unfortunately there was a huge mix up with our entree & main meal.<br/>Not enough communication between the floor staff and the kitchen.<br/>As the kitchen ran out of Lamb Shank, and we did not receive our pork entree. <br/><br/>Entree & Main: 8:09pm *** 7 min !!! ***<br/>The kitchen turn around is ridiculously fast. But we didn't receive all of our meal. <br/>Once again, there is a breakdown between their floor staff and kitchen. <br/><br/>Please check your bill... as the Bon Bon cocktail was displayed at $16.00 receipt charged $17.00. <br/>The staff were very apologetic throughout the whole evening, and offered us an additional $5.00 off our total price.<br/><br/>Gin Long Canteen... Not bad but nothing special. We started with the lobster slider and the prawn dumpling. The dumpling was beautiful in a lovely sauce but the slider was really average and tiny, 2 mouthfuls at most. They also used a spicy mayo that completely overpowered the lobster. For mains we had the pork and the duck. The duck curry was nice but I was disappointed it was the same sauce as with the prawn dumpling. Felt a little cheated. The pork belly was delicious and we were both so stuffed we could t finish everything. There was nothing terrible about the meal but also nothing amazing. I was expecting so much more after reading the rave reviews. I wouldn't avoid it but wouldn't race back either.

Really nice experience all round!. After hearing many good things we finally decided to pay a visit and were not disappointed. Atmosphere was great, very vibrant and busy, we were attended too as soon as we walked in and seated at the bar facing straight in to the busy kitchen, best place to sit if you ask me as you watch your food being prepared and all the chefs working as such a great team, like clock work. Food was awesome we had DIY cold rolls for entree which was a new & very cool experience followed by two mains which we shared. All the food and drinks were very nice and we were not disappointed by anything. Staff were friendly and polite. I would love to go back and try other dishes, as sitting at the bar you also get a lot of food envy for everyone else's delicious dishes excited the busy kitchen.

Overrated. People talk this place up way too much. Entree servings are ridiculous. You can't share one because they're bitesized. Everything is overpriced and nothing is memorable. Food is average. The barramundi was offensive, turned it into a cheap crumbed "chip". Call me old school but this poor excuse of a "modern take" left a bitterly disappointing taste in my mouth.

We were offered their 'quick dining' table that is for people looking for a fast dinner then out the door which is fine. We had 43 minutes... Only problem was that it took them 20 to come over and take our order. By the time we finally got our food we were feeling rushed. To top it off they put an actual timer next to us which went off half way through our meal. It was then that staff started to pace up and down past our table watching us. We were more than happy to have a quick bite but in this case it was their fault we had to wait so long and the timer with bell was just rude and distasteful. We'd opted to share a bunch of entrees as the waitress said that it wasn't uncommon for people to do this and that 4-5 entrees would suffice, but every dish was so overpowered by coriander. Tasted more Thai than Korean but I'm not an Asian food expert. $70 later for two of us with only 1 beer purchased we left still hungry and irritated. Very disappointing as we'd waited a long time before finally visiting after being recommended by a friend. FAR too overpriced.

Awesome. Walked in for a quick meal with my wife who is gluten free. Beef Salad was perfect and beef curry was also great. Can't wait to go back. The girls are hot too !

Expensive. Over-priced for average Asian fusion food. We paid about $250 for 4 people (3 entrees, 5 mains, and drinks) and we left hungry! <br/>Plus points would be great ambience and good service.
John_tran
Meh. The food tastes like any other asian restuarant nothing special, i was still hungry after my meal and that was after two main dishes. It is overpriced for what you are receiving not worth it. Also it is confusing as the staff where ordinary clothing so you can never tell who is who<br/><br/>But food was quick and efficient

Like it!. Nice food, very friendly and attentive staff, fast! Thank you.

Quality food, great service but drinks are heavily overpriced.

Shredded Pork Ribs Salad. Well balanced dish of sweetness and acidity of good serving size. Served warm and mildly spicy. The mint and coriander compliment the spiciness of the dish.

Ticks all the boxes! Can't wait to go back. Felt like I was in Melbourne.
