Review Hong Kee Restaurant - Adelaide

Sam S
Can’t believe I’ve missed out this restaurant for all these years! Been in Adelaide for more than 6 years but, seriously this place is cooking the food that will ease my homesick. Serving food that are not just Cantonese style but also very similar with Malaysian Chinese food. The owner were very generous and welcoming. The place may not be classy but the food here is pretty impressive. Especially their Flat Rice noodles is really full of char (burnt liked) flavour which really test the skill of the chef, giving you the flavour without burning the food itself.

Excellent service BUT mediocre food Very friendly service from this restaurant but I’m there for the food. Ordered a roast duck, seafood claypot and a black pepper lamb. The roast duck is at best supermarket quality. Dry and probably frozen. Lamb was chewy and left half uneaten though we were famished. The seafood claypot saved the day as it was fairly well prepared. I have it 0 stars if not for the service. Another restaurant that impress foreigners but if you are chinese, look elsewhere.

Our favourite Chinese restaurant in Adelaide. Amazing roast duck. Crispy skin and super savoury!

It's true - the lady boss exudes such warmth and courtesy to a road warrior like me on a quick Adelaide business trip, on the prowl for authentic Chinese food, served with that good old school service! Yes, lady boss refilled my Chinese Tea Pot too, without prompting. Even the young waiter is professional, without being pushy and re-check if I indeed want a serving of steamed rice to go with my dish. Extra special touch towards the end of the meal - a small dish of peeled Mandarin oranges presented in a circular shape of perpetual happiness perhaps (see photo attached). Food is great; price is reasonable and I dare say cost effective, and service is exceptional! Must try other dishes...will be back.

Great service and good food. A must try place for anyone looking for a chinese food dinner.

I heard about this place through my friends and also from social media reviews. It was the first time dined at Hong Kee with my family yesterday. We tried roast duck, braised pork belly, seafood hotpot, chinese spinach, steamed chicken with ginger, special fried rice and so on. We all are very satisfied with most of dishes and will definitely return. Service from Mei was also great . She is such a friendly owner lady! Kudos to you Mei!!!

Outstanding food and service from the staff, this is a truly excellent gem that will encourage multiple visits. The Pork Ribs with BBQ Sauce were the BEST ribs I've ever had. Phenomenal!

Great little restaurant away from the main drags of gouger St and china town. Doesn't look like much from outside, but has what you want inside. Good variety on the menu, specials board, serves alcohol as well. Service is friendly and food comes out quickly. A hidden gem.

A bit of a language barrier. I ordered honey chicken but got lemon chicken. I am used to very good local Chinese food but this was ok.

So hard to choose a favourite, after a range of delicious dishes were tried - shredded beef with pancakes, salt and pepper eggplant, drunken chicken and shredded pork noodles. Fast, friendly service too!

Consistently good tasting food and surprisingly affordable mouth watering Peking Duck! You must also try the home made iced lemon tea!

The scallops, OH THE SCALLOPS! First time there today and absolutely loved the food. Will definitely be back.

Great restaurant for Cantonese food - my family was over in Adelaide and we dined here two nights in a row as the food was so tasty and reasonably priced! Service was friendly and they were able to accommodate our request for the green beans to be extra spicy. The complimentary sliced oranges at the end of our meal was a great touch. Would dine here again!

We saw the hyped reviews and decided to crash in here for a sunday lunch about a month back. And we were not disappointed. We ordered prawns for the starters. It was crispy and yummy as expected. We expected to have more flat noodles and sadly we dropped in there at 3 in the noon. So we were able to get only one of it. Its was the reason for the '4.5' rating as it was a bit burnt. The Schezwan chicken was lovely. Infact, we asked for extra peppers on it. We also had singapore noodles, tea pot on which we took rounds as if we are taking rounds of beer. And finally, the most loved thing. The honey chicken. We loved it so much that we took 2 parcels of it back home. The packing was good too. On a whole, I loved this place so much and the heads up is, Its a family run business. So you've got nice, raat, home cooked, chinese food 😉
Food - 4.5
Accessibility - 5
Staff courtesy - 5
Ambience - 4.5
Serving size - 4
Crowdy - Yes
Halal - No
Vegan friendly - yes

We went to Hong Kee on a Thursday night, so it wasn't too busy. The service was very attentive (probably too attentive, actually).
The food was very hit-and-miss. The BBQ pork rib tasted like sweet and sour, and they definitely did not look like pork ribs. Most of the pieces did not have a bone, so we joked that they were miscellaneous animal bits. The kung pao chicken was not good, and tasted more like honey chicken. The salt and pepper eggplant was quite good, and the curry lamb hot pot was our favourite.
The atmosphere was average, but you can't expect too much from a cheap Chinese restaurant like Hong Kee.

Great food great service!! I was looking for sweer and sour fish and they cooked us even though its not on their menu! They cooked quickly but the fried rice was a little serving

Time to eat my words ! I went back to Hong Kee the second time and had a much better dining experience .. their soft shell crabs and xo scallops were so delicious !! amazing :)

Food: Mapu Bean Curd with mince pork. I was wondering how the restaurant version would differ from the store bought mabo tofu sauce. This is obviously their own version, lighter and tastier than what I've had before. The portion size was pretty generous, I could barely finish it.
They have table service here which seems to be getting more rare these days in these type of venues. Would certainly return for something different.

8 dishes shared with 11 people. I'd highly recommend the Choy Pong Hai Scrambled Egg Whites Chinese Style. Efficient and attentive servers with complimentary watermelon served at the end of our meal. Great value for money if you're planning to eat out with a big group.

I can never thank my friend enough for recommending Hong Kee to me and my partner. Since we've discovered it, it has been our absolute favourite easy go to option for quick delicious Chinese (Hong Kong) meals. Their menus has been pretty much the same the whole time with occasional specials (although this tends to be the same as well) but hey, why fix something that isn't broken. If you find yourself in Hong Kee, definitely order their Duck! (either Peking duck if you wanted to treat yourself, or Roast duck) These are cook to near perfection with crispy skins and I have to say one of if not the best in Adelaide! Other notable dishes include their Choy Pong Hai, Steamed Barra and Shan Tung Pork Hock (previous special). The staff there are always friendly and service is almost always quick. Definitely recommended and I would say best Chinese food in Gouger! 😊

We had lunch here today and were looking forward to the meal after reading the great reviews.

Service was friendly and prompt however the food was very disappointing.

The rice was served to the table in a microwave plastic rice cooker which we thought was a little casual...

The Mapo tofu was very bland, we have tried this dish at many other places in Adelaide and it was definitely the worst we have had.

Our favourite Chinese dish is dry chilli chicken which we were looking forward to comparing to others we have tried. Unfortunately the chicken was undercooked and very under seasoned. We told the lady and she quickly refried it and added more seasoning however it still lacked the heat and szechuan kick this dish usually has... There was also very little chicken in the serving size.

We are not sure if we caught them on a bad day given the other great reviews however we will not be returning.

Scored a 4.5 because the restaurant needs an update - otherwise, we had our best food at this restaurant in our 5 nights stay in Adelaide. Food is not oily or salty & cooked with the fragrant taste of 'Wok Hei'!! Highly recommend for those who haven't venture just outside of the Chinatown precinct. Prices are very reasonable and serving size is good. Service with a smile from both the waitresses.

Nice friendly service. Ordered 4 dishes and shared with 6 people. Portions were decent sized. They also provided complimentary oranges after our meal so it was nice.

Off the main strip of Chinatown sits a little gem called Hong Kee Chinese Restaurant. This place, unassuming from the front, produces some of the most delicious and great value food. It can be easily overlooked as it isn’t quite near the restaurants located all along gouger but a friend once told me to try it and we haven’t looked back.

A very small and simple Chinese restaurant, very suitable for family gathering. We have pre-ordered some seafood. Live blue swimmer crabs with ginger and shallots, steam live scallops with xo sauce and vermicelli. The seafood here is very nice and fresh. If you want to have live seafood there, you need to preorder a day ago, and everything tastes very nice and good value for money.

Just one little thing - some of the dishes are quite salty. Need to order some tea or drinks to wash of the saltiness I guess. Overall, it is generally pretty good.

Slightly off the main drag of Gouger and Groite Streets this is a plain and simple place. Cozy I guess without anythoing flash. You could see yourself making yourself at home.

The menu isn't one of the 500 item jobs that Chinese restaurants seem to specialise in. Instead it's small, but perfctly formed in every detail. Enough to choose from with some old favourites and some new things to try.

The food is warming and tasty with big, generous, well presented serves.

Not overly expensive and worth coming back to

Great Food Great Service. Excellent food, service and nice clean place. Can't ask for better

Went here for dinner on a recent trip to adelaide- as fussy chinese connoisseurs we were very impressed. The restaurant is no frills old school style but the food was very fresh and flavor some. Had the salt and pepper calamari and the dish had the right amount of spice. The black pepper beef was tender and the green veg with oyster and special fried rice hit the spot. All came out quickly and hot. Friendly staff and good value for money.

Yummy Asian food!. One of the better places to go to for my Asian food Cravings!
Portions and price are decent and food is amazing!!!!!
Been here multiple times and always satisfied!
Red bean pancake desert is yummy if you're a fan of red bean.
Definitely worth the money and tummy!

Fish Hot Pot. The ginger sping onion fish hot pot was the best, which had all the flavour. I recommended people try it, keep you warm in winter. The chicken dish was a bit too sweet and too much onion, if they would reduce a bit that would be great. Generally, all dishes were tasty. Definitely give this one a go!

The food was excellent, the service was warm and genuine. No complaints at all. I shall return.

This place is great. Super friendly owner who is always on the floor greeting customers. Order the salted egg soft shell crab. It's not on the menu but its the best dish there! Just ask the owner for it and she'll know! Yummmmm!!

Great food, good value. A busy restaurant with a good sized menu. I love their salt & pepper chicken and salt & pepper tofu! They are accommodating in amending dishes within reason eg we asked for a mixed of Chinese broccoli and mushrooms in Oyster sauce.

Poured cold water on roast duck. Went to this restaurant with my parents. Ordered the roast duck and Chinese broccoli. The Chinese broccoli came out first and was salty so that was a disappointment. But the most disappointing dish was the Roast Duck - it came out and it was incredibly salty that my mum had to pour the sauce into a bowl. Then when the waitress came out and asked whether we liked it my mum told her that it was too salty. The waitress apologised then walked into the kitchen and came out with a bowl of cold water and pour it ON TO THE ROAST DUCK! So the roast duck was tough, soggy and cold unlike how its suppose to be.... Tender and crispy. We stopped eating it at that point and left the restaurant (paying the bill in full) I haven't been back since.

Always delicious and friendly!

Cheap and Tasty. Love this place. If you want a quick, tasty meal served by friendly and welcoming staff, then this is the place for you. We consistently end up ordering way too much food here, cos the prices are so low. Recommend the eggplant and salted fish hotpot and the soft shell crab. Thanks Rainbow!

Excellent little find. Hong Kee is part of the restaurant 'creep' out of of Gouger Street and it's a great place: casual, really cheap and excellent quality. We love the manager's happy, welcoming attitude and the other staff are good too. Like many places around China town there's not much polish to the room, but the food makes up for that. Particularly good dishes include the salt and pepper bean curd and the chilli prawns. Recommended 8/10

I simply cannot rave enough about this restaurant. Each and every visit is always welcomed with a warm, friendly smile from the owner who would quickly have you seated and attended to. It does remind me of those moments where I visited my relatives' homes for meals. No pretentious services and you will definitely be taken care of!

This is my 3rd or 4th post on this restaurant, simply because I can't get enough of this place. I am, afterall, a sucker for home-cooked food, especially after a tiring day at work.

I'm back at Hong Kee once again for more chopstick licking good food at affordable prices. Little did I know that they actually do have a mini aquarium with live fish in their kitchen and diners could opt for freshly steamed fish for dinner:)
I absolutely love this place. Not only is the food delicious and affordable for those of us on a very tight budget, but you can be assured that service is top notch. The aunty who runs the show is a genuinely friendly lady and despite her average command of english, her antics can never fail to make you feel comfortable:)

Dumpling soup~ each dumpling was filled with 1/3 of a 5cm prawn. Excellent tasting and the soup was definitely not diluted:)
