Review Lantern By Nu - Adelaide

Great service, cool location and good vibes inside. The oysters were incredible, as was the squid. The crispy beef with sprinklings of dragon fruit was delicious 😍 Not sure if just tonight, but two of our dishes were inedible due to the chilli levels. I'm a massive chilli fan but this was....wow. Will be back to try other dishes but highly recommend giving this place a miss if you have the slightest aversion to heat.

Won’t say much here! Absolutely amazing!! Foods were incredibly great, attentive staffs. Very happy!

Greater focus on traditional features without going too contemporary. Prompt service, proper spectrum of flavours, lively decor. Definitely returning.

Visited Lantern by Nu again last week and this being one of our favourite restaurants in Adelaide, we felt the food was far better the first time we visited compared to the second. But it doesn't mean the food was bad but the food choice specifically the flavour in tiger prawn was not to our liking. But overall it's still one of our favourite restaurants.

Best service. Favourite dish: Slow cooked beef cheeks (as in photo) Portion is pretty big, but doesn't over compensate the quality. Probably best thai/fusion restaurant to date.

I have been to several Thai restaurants before but I don't think any of them can measure up to Lantern by Nu. When I first walked in, I loved the vibe of the restaurant, it is just esthetically pleasing to look at. The staff members are so welcoming as everyone greets you and you just feel so comfortable being here. Now let's talk about the food, which was what blew my mind. Every single dish that was severed to us was amazing. We did the feed me menu which was $65. The amount of food we got versus the quality, it was out of this world. Everything was cooked perfectly, balanced with the Thai herbs and spices that complemented every single dish that came out, from beef cheek curry, lamb curry, salt and pepper squid to the oysters. I was told this restaurant was great, but this literally blew my mind. I'm so coming back here again.

How good is this place? Very! I didn't even know this place existed, if you don't know it's there you will drive/ walk right by. We had a large group and pretty much had everything on the menu and there were no complaints. Beef cheeks, lamb curry, eggplant and chicken wings were the stand outs. The cocktails were really good as well. As good as the food was the service, the waitresses was helpful and honest. We will be coming back or at the least ordering for takeout!!

From the moment I made my booking I knew we'd be looked after here. The owner is just divine. Its like she's welcoming you in to her home. The restaurant is like nothing else I've ever been to. Hidden away on a side street, but well worth seeking out! There were 12 of us and we had the $65 ph banquet. We were all so full and content at the end, and left with containers of left overs too! Already dreaming about my next visit, and everyone else in our party felt the same. Best restaurant experience overall that I've had in years. No pics, as we were all too busy enjoying our meal!

The place was beautiful and great atmosphere. The food and the services was amazing, there was a lovely sexy staff who serve us and he was beautiful :).The customer services was on point, everybody was so lovely and the food was flavoursome and fresh. Would definitely come back. :)

10/10 in all areas. Food is absolutely amazing, best place I’ve ever been to. Service is at a high standard too. Speed of service is outstanding too. No faults whatsoever, would recommend to anyone and everyone! Nu and everyone else there are the best.

The food was lovely and fresh with beautiful flavours and looked very pretty. The staff were very friendly. Tucked away in Selby Street, it's a treat when you open the door and walk in. We were there for lunch, but it would be a great place for dinner too. The food quality was fantastic and very very yummy!

We had a large family dinner ages from 8 to 78. We all loved each dish. We ate most of the menu! The staff were exceptional. Thank you Lantern by Nu. A great night.

Food was divine! Great service! Highly recommend the raw salmon and the chilli fried barramundi was out of this world!

Smashing street food in a laid back environment. Beverages list is great, and reflects the food styles. Not fine dining, and not trying to be fine dining. Go and expect great food quality and a relaxed vibe. Street food, streetwise.

I have been here twice now & both times have had an Awesome experience. The food is sooo tasty , we had a table of 9 & the food came out quite quickly , the staff were courteous, chatty & asked us for drinks regularly. Lantern by Nu is my new favourite place to eat in Adelaide. I can't wait for my next visit.

Simply amazing food and great staff. You like asian food you will love this place

Nu back in fine form delivering sublime food, combined with a killer cocktail and wine list. Cool vibe, beats and service with a smile. New fave.

Excellent meal. Great staff. Highly recommend it. Went 24 Nov and had a great time

NU. That's all. The man has been feeding the masses with authentic Thai food with his own twist for years. We were personally served by the chef himself as it was interpeak time and explained each dish in detail. Do yourself a favour

The food was sensational and so was the service. A very enjoyable experience for us and I would recommend it!

Sadly the service wasn't great. We had a booking and when we arrived someone just pointed at our table so we sat down and waited 10 mins before anyone even took our order. The food was ok except the Crispy Pork belly wS really bad. Bland and small and dry but very pricey. I also had to flag someone down for another drink. We ended up going elsewhere for dessert. Had a nice mango and lychee drink though.

This is certainly up there with some of Adelaide's best Thai food. The DĂŠcor is really trendy and the staff are lovely.

Had a wonderful evening last night. Great atmosphere, good service. I had crispy chilli barramundi which was so delightful, tasted portions of other dishes which could not fault. Would highly recommend this venue. Will definitely be back. Debra Gray

Absolutely sensational food, and so many great options it’s impossible to choose! The service and atmosphere was unreal, definitely coming back!

Brilliant meal. The food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was lovely. 100% would recommend

Went for a Friday lunch with a friend of the chef . Left it to Nu to feed us . So good. Beautifully presented dishes, made with fresh ingredients and perfectly executed. Big thumbs up from me and will definitely return when I’m back in Adelaide.

Food ✔️ service ✔️ value for money ✔️ A great place that ticked all the boxes. Food had beautiful flavours, portions were massive, and service was great, no issues with changing up ingredients of existing menu, very accommodating. Highly recommended.

Lantern by Nu is just off Gougar Street and I love the cool and retro vibes of this place. The food is fantastic. The crispy pork belly with broccoli (pictured) is on point and the pad thai with chicken (pictured) is the best pad thai I have had in years. The service is friendly and the food comes out very quickly which is a bonus if you are super hungry. I cannot wait to try again. #laternbynu

Food was really nice, so much flavour. However, the service was not up to scratch. The Waitress kept forgetting our order. The air conditioner was set on Antarctica temperature and we asked them to turn it down but waiters kept forgetting that too. It’s sad that my experience was average because the food was actually nice
We did the “Lantern Greed” dining option, and it was amazing. So much food for your money, and a great variety. Everything sounded delicious, so it was great to get to try a lot of it with this option. And they were completely accommodating to GF requirements. Lovely staff, wine, and environment too. We will be beck to try the rest of the menu!

Hidden just off Gouger st, Lantern by Nu serves up a variety of modern Thai dishes. The restaurant itself is a little cramped and a tad noisy but i guess this is testimate to the great food and hence its popularity. The Crispy Pork Betel Leaves are a must.

Recently came for dinner and decided to do the feed me option. For $65pp you got a decent amount of food with the offer of if you’re still hungry the chef will give you more. I loved the whole fried fish, so tasty. The entrees were also delicious although only quite bite sized. Dessert for 2 of us was a lemon tart and a selection of ice cream and sorbet which were nice enough but not really what you would want on a cold winter night. Service pretty good, a bit of a wait for our drinks but all in all a good night out.
Fit & Fed Foodie
Not everyday you get a dish served by the chef himself! Nu and all the restaurants he has left his imprint have been amazing. This is by far the best thai food I’ve had in a long time and so much of it! We had a fabulous night and enjoyed every dish that came out. Faultless. Thanks Nu and the fantastic team of staff for a great night!

Well a nice little discovery in a city street. Food was divine but the service was slow, but very pleasant and nice. We rocked up and were shown to the booth. No one explained the specials. In fact no one come for quite some time to take drink orders by which time we were ready for food orders.

The food was delicious. Great to see another top quality restaurant and food done by chef Nu suandokmai. Always loved his style. We ordered the chefs selection banquet. With 5 people. Two of the guests I invited, didn't eat seafood. So requested not to select to many seafood dishes. 4out of 5 dishes we received were seafood. Which was annoying. Seemed there was a miss commutation between front of house and kitchen. When I made a comment they were very apologetic and bought out another 2 plates for our friends free of charge.
Besides that little mishap we had a great time

Service.. stroppy waitress who hasn't heard about the customer being right
Ambience.. OK if you like noisy, unfinished decor and walk out smelling of oil and fish sauce
Menu.. Lazy and unimaginative for vegetarians
Price.. Over!
Food.. Poorly prepared, Pad Thai was inedible (noodles uncooked) Mixed Mushrooms were oily and sparkling water was OK. Steamed rice overcooked.
We walked out without eating our meals and bought chips on the way home.
Another overrated Adelaide restaurant.

What a discovery ! This place reminds me of a combination between chin chin and longrain in Melbourne.. great Thai fusion cuisine ... I love the fact that there's a chilli kick in this restaurant.. lovely atmosphere and good waiting staff. Can get crowded so I recommend booking prior and also Can be slightly pricey

An absolutely amazing Thai experience, Nu is an outstanding chef and delivers traditional Thai food with a modern twist. The dining experience is dynamic sitting in between an open kitchen and open bar with a DJ laying down chilled vinyls beats. A must go destination in Adelaide. Will defiantly be back.

Worth navigating slightly off the main Gouger St area to find. Amazingly flavoursome food - so much tastier than mainstream Thai restaurants. Nice busy atmosphere. Attentive service. Pricier than average but worth it.

The four of us went along on a saturday night for a birthday celebration and the place was packed.
Thought about ordering the banquet but figured for $260 we could order plenty of food of our choice to share.
Ordered 10 savoury dishes in total and we had plenty of food.
The food came out quickly and was all very tasty, spicy and fresh.
Highlights were the 5 spice Calamari, Tom Yum, Barramundi and crying tiger Beef.
Thought some of the serves could be a bit bigger but I was the odd one out.
Service was attentive, efficient and friendly.
We were seated in a booth which was very comfortable and private.
Overall a good night would recommend and return.

Loved the food! Amazing modern Thai food. I organised a work dinner here for 20 people & the staff looked after us pretty well despite unexpected complications. Well done.

I was certainly impressed when I walked into this the venue - very old rustic street feel and somewhere perfect for a group of friends. We ordered the banquet - we enjoyed most dishes and it was great value as you could keep ordering until we were full. Will definitely go back!

Great ambience, great interesting food, great staff. A little gem off Gouger St. Not the usual Thai food - Thai street food. Really worth a visit
Honestly_nadz
Great ambience, unlike the other reviews we had excellent service! Got the 65$ feed me menu, for the 2 of us we had 3 different entries, 3 huge mains (including expensive items such as the whole fish) and 2 desserts, we were stuffed! High quality Thai, fair bit of spice in every dish but I like that. Will return.

Disappointed in overall experience. It's ordinary Thai food dressed up to match the pretentious atmosphere and staff (come on who needs a DJ in their restaurant spinning out loud tone deaf sounds that jar with the food). Pricey for what is is and certainly not special.
JN
Very average Thai food... also for the price I don’t think most of the dishes are worth it. I am a big fan of Thai cuisine and I’ve been to plenty of different Thai restaurants in Adelaide but this place is probably at the bottom of the list for me :(. Lovely presentation though... wish there were more “Thai” food varieties.

Had a poor experience with the staff at the start. The first person to arrive told the staff he was there for the reservation. The girl told him it was at booth 1 and made no move to show him where it was. The layout makes the booths not very visible from the entrance, he wouldn't know where to go. After standing for a while since he thought she would show him where, he got her attention again, where she just pointed and repeated booth 1.
He made his own way there, where there were 3 unlabelled booths (so which was booth 1?) which were all occupied.
It was only after he returned to her and told her that she apologised for sending him to a full table and he went to wait outside instead

The menu itself was very interesting, not the usual things you would expect from a thai restaurant and the food tasty. Great chilli hit in all the dishes. The complimentary rice is a nice touch. The other waitress that served us was good. Very nice and friendly, checked in on us without being obtrusive. Fantastic decor and good atmosphere
Just need to train some of the staff better

We ordered a selection of dishes and with the exception of the fried barramundi, left very disappointed. The jungle curry was watery and lacking flavour, the rice was gluggy and the portion sizes were minuscule for the price. There was a big emphasis from the staff on up selling drinks and we were stunned to have been charged $50 for 2 small espresso martinis. The 2 stars are for the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to split the bill for us. There are plenty of cheap and cheerful Thai restaurants in Adelaide so I'd skip Lantern until they've refined some of the recipes and prices.

Anybody that is familiar with the Adelaide restaurant scene would know who Nu Suandokmai is. He’s been the chef at Nu Thai, Golden Boy, Gin Long Canteen and Mrs Q, only to name a few, and most people who have tried his cooking would agree that he has talent. Now he’s gone back to his roots and opened up his own restaurant, Lantern by Nu, which specialises in Thai street food. The restaurant itself has a rustic, industrial feel and physically seats 103 people. It’s located on a side street and away from the hustle and bustle of the Chinatown precinct.

Love it
Just want to say "highly recommend!!" We had a wonderful dinner last Wednesday night. Food was superb, decoration was so beautiful feel like we were having dinner in Thailand , music was good and overall was fantastic. Thanks god we found this really Thai restaurant in Adelaide.
Great warm ambience, beautiful space. When we go to a new place we over order so we get a great selection of dishes. Lanterns Facebook photo shows a terracotta coal burner with a pot on top for their tom yum soup.We just got a bowl, the broth had no seafood or tom yum flavour,it just tasted of lemon grass and the seafood was also tasteless. We chose 3 salads-chicken,eggplant and papaya. Each salad had way too much dressing, that's all you tasted, one salad had too many peanuts another too much chilli, didn't enjoy any of them . Lamb shank to die for, exquisite! Vegie dumplings- amazing texture and flavour. My advice is when someone orders a salad don't drown it in dressing, ask for it on the side. If super hot chilli is not your thing then you better check with waitress.

The service was very poor. Waitress brought a dirty plate from another table along while taking our orders. When our food arrived, it was good, but they missed a couple of dishes which were then brought out after without any apology. It's been half an hour since we got the dessert menu and no one has come back to take our order. Won't be back.
