Review The British Hotel - Adelaide

Ryan French
Had dinner here, really nice atmosphere and delicious food. My wife got the grilled chicken breast which she really enjoyed. I had the Beef and Mushroom pie. This was one of the best pies I’ve ever had, so yummy! Would definitely come back.

Really enjoyed our work Melbourne cup lunch. The pub looks great and they serve delicious food. I had the kangaroo, they cooked it the way I wanted.
Robert Shields
Had a wonderful lunch with friends. The share platter was fantastic with house made pork pie, pate and relish. All our main meals were excellent and the service was friendly and efficient. A bit dearer than your average pub meal but well worth the cost.
David Maddison
We had an okay dining experience at the British Hotel. Slow serving but it may have been a once off. Sides with the steak incorrect as well as the level of cooking for the meat. Nevertheless, still a good meal

What a lovely little hidden away pub. The France barman was lovely. We had a really enjoyable experience and felt at home
Stephen Rogers
Good pub food and good variety to choose from. Wine and beverage list offers sufficient choices. Prices are up there for food and drink. Atmosphere is pleasant, not too noisy. Staff were friendly, service was slow though.

The staff were very friendly, helpful and kind. The food prices and drink prices are higher than I would expect. The atmosphere in the bar area is slightly similar to a traditional British pub, with open fires etc. The on tap beers are pretty much all local with the exception of Heineken, they are good quality. The food is average and appears to be microwaved so in essence very similar to a lot of Wetherspoon pubs in the UK. All in all I would visit again but just for a few beers

Great place, good environment, great beers and nice staff ☺️ 🤙🍻🥂. Just few minutes away from the center and very close to Melbourne street, you can drink inside or outside, both are really nice and very cool. The food is amazing, specially the schnitzel, good options and also have vegetarian meals 🍄 🥔 🍔. Totally recomended 😊 👌.

Today I had the deconstructed tofu salad bowl, it was absolutely amazing. The staff are always so pleasant and accommodating and I just love it there. I would recommend this place to anyone, the new owners have certainly made some lovely new improvements. Thank you

This is the best pub in Adelaide as far as I am concerned. Good food - good ambience - friendly staff (look for Gareth or Amy) - fair prices. Let's hope the tradition continues under new owners. Special thanks to RS.

This place is ok,,,, very loud inside and they ran out of the meat we wanted,,, it's a ok place but I wouldn't eat there again.... maybe ok for few beers
Andrea Kettle Henry
The staff are all very welcoming and friendly. Great bar staff advise. The atmosphere was really great. Unfortunately they had run out of the ribs that I ordered. Although the pork I ended up having was quite good I felt it needed something. I will definitely go again.
Sue Elliott
The atmosphere and the service and the drinks and especially the food are first rate. Cannot imagine a time when we visit this wonderful city, when we would not enjoy a meal and drinkies here.

Awesome pub, had amazing service and a great vibe. Certainly one to visit if you’re looking for a quirky, fun pub
Hugh Boyd
Nice pub, good location, like the street tables. Appears to be run by Brits for Brits - bar staff happy to ignore you if they are busy chatting with someone from Old Blighty. Also the only 'British' pub I've ever been too with no British beers on tap. Go figure.

Every time I come here I leave happy. The staff are fantastic with the kids engaging them in conversation and bring chips with sauce on a spare plate I asked for! It makes it all enjoyable! Thank you!
Karen Jeffery
Absolutely love this place. Definitely a favourite and never disappointed.. The food is always great, the service can never be faulted. Will just always keep coming back on our own or with friends..

Perfect location, always a good spot for a Sunday session! Bartender Danica was super friendly and a delight to deal with.

Best place for a family gathering or just a casual meal. Have used this venu twice now to cater for 40 plus people. Very high standard of food and customer service.

Great pub, great beer and great staff

Oysters kilpatric were great.. Unfortunately the scotch fillet was luke warm when it was served. Otherwise a nice pub for a catch up.
Stephen Mcneill
Good food great service generous meal portions nice place to eat.

Est in 1838 the British is one of the last remaining classic pubs in Adelaide with delicious food! Must try!

Have been here many times. Unfortunately since changing hands this place has declined. Service staff are rude. Ordering steaks is expensive for a couple. This is a pub not a high end restaurant. Pub food is relatively good value Schnitzels are ok but recipes for sauces could be tweaked

Loved it here! The staff were all super friendly and the food was quite literally the best!! My salmon was cooked perfectly and the flavour was spot on! We ordered the arancini balls and garlic bread which I highly recommend!! Look anything you order you won’t be disappointed with! 😊😊

I don't think I have ever been disappointed when visiting The British. Food is always above average as is the service. The pub has its old world charms and doesn't feel like you are actually so close to the city centre. More feels like an old coutry style hotel.
You have the option of cooking your own steaks on the grill in the bistro area, though I think you are penalised too greatly in the wallet area if you actually want the kitchen to do their job and cook it for you. But it wont stop me visiting The British.
Alis
A nice pub meal; fish in beer batter. Whilst I would not normally order this, I did on a recommendation from the waitress. She told me it was nice, and she was right! It was served with chips & salad; a perfect lunch!

I have not really ever been one to go out alone but I found myself at the British hotel alone after being stood up, I was very impressed with the place, I felt at home and the staff were friendly.
Food was great.
Might go out alone more often.
Thanks British hotel 👌🏼

We headed here on a cold winter night and were lucky enjoy to have a drink by the beautiful open fire which was just lovely. We had dinner in the main dining area at the back of the hotel. I ordered the pork cutlet crusted with sage and served with caramelized apples, purée butter bean and red wine jus. It was super tasty and perfectly cooked. Other mains looked tasty and were generous portion sizes. A nice place for a casual meal on a winters day or night.

Unfortunately The British Hotel is always a slight let down when we go however, I continue to persist. The staff are always ultra friendly and accommodating and it is cosy - particularly in winter. But the food always lets it down. on this occasion we stuck to the starter menu and had a tapas plate, the haloumi and the empanadas. Unfortunately not brilliant.

Old country pub in the city. Lovely traditional feel with wooden floor boards, fireplaces and classic furniture. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Food was nice :) We had the porcini arancini balls to start which were tasty. For main I had the beef ribs which had beautiful flavour and melted in your mouth but unfortunately my portion contained very little meat...

Came here with all my mates for the TDU (as usual), we always stop here for a meal. Very consistent with the monster steaks but they need some more ommphf. Cheap steak no real extras or sides but it is well priced. Wines are nice. Get stuck in....

Not an experience I'd rave about. Bar staff weren't overly friendly nor was the girl showing us to our table - actually they were all quite rude. Ran out of the food choice we wanted and don't serve standard plain gravy. Meat was over cooked. A very underwhelming dinner. Such a shame as it used to be a great place a few years ago but definitely on the decline now in my opinion. We've eaten here twice in the last two months and both times were disappointing.

Waiter aren't friendly to customers
Menu aren't displayed correctly
Pore quality of food for the pricing
Seating is uncomfortable
Waiting for orders for to long
Seriously disappointed when I went for a drink with friends on Sunday! A reasonable range of beer on tap and wines by glass but what a unwelcoming environment. Staff showed no interest in serving, they also showed little pride in their work. The bar was cramped and grimy, not well kept. Witnessed some interesting unhygienic practises of lazy bar staff. Pity as it used to be the pride of North Adelaide!

Attending a farewell dinner at The British, it has been over 30 years since my last visit and after dining there not sure why it took so long to go back there.

The dining area at the back is nice, plenty of room and for a cold night it was reasonably warm.

They still offer the ability to cook your own meat but only three people did for the evening (BBQ area was very clean).

Started with a tapas sharing plate that had a good selection from some very tasty calamari to aranchini balls that very terrible. All in all a good starter though.

Followed this with the aged rump steak, an after overlooked cut but for me possibly my favourite. Asked for medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. Also has the rocket and apple salad and it was very good.

Staff were nice, there was some confusion over our order (10 people at the table) which resulted in one meal arriving after most had finished, a real first world issue for me.

In summary a reasonably priced meal (especially with the entertainment card) that was of a decent size and well cooked. Decor good and staff pleasant. Can expect a return visit from me.

A boutique pub, nestled in a quiet location!
Well this incredibly charmed gem is definitely one you shouldn’t miss, but fortunately it is a bit of a secret. NOT for much longer.
It’s menu is seasonal and forever changing, it’s mostly mistaken for as a pub where the locals go. However I stumbled across it a few years ago and it’s definitely one of the most high end pubs I have ever been to! It’s more of a gourmet specialty pub! The service is never short of fantastic and the food is always cooked to perfection topped with Love and delivered with a smile.
How is this all possible well I guess the secrets out go see for yourself:)

Terrible customer service. Website offered a voucher to use Easter Sunday, booked our table and on arrival we are told it would not be honoured. Very deceptive. As consolation we were told we could order from the pub menu even though we say in the restaurant. When we came to order we were then informed a higher price would be charged for the privilege of siting in the restaurant. If that's the way you treat your customers then we won't be back

Food was reasonably good, service is average but beware if u are using the entertainment card on PH. It was listed as one of the restaurants honoring entertainment card on Easter Sunday but they told us on actual day that we will not be able to use it. I find that unethical, not honor what was being advertised. So beware. We had kids on the table and weren't provided with kids menu, and by coincidence, we found it in nick of time before ordering. Not impressed
Kylie
Very bad experience.
Booked after reading the Entertainment Book was available Easter Sunday (screen shots below) but on arrival we are told it would not be honoured. Didn't want that to spoil our night so we stayed, and were told we could order from the pub menu which was cheaper. We grabbed a pub menu but when we came to order we are informed we need to pay a premium price because we were sitting in the restaurant. That really added insult to injury as we were already lured there under false pretences. We were sitting near the entrance and did feel sorry for the poor staff having to deliver this news to all who arrived. Very poor form from The British Hotel Management. We won't be back!!
Food Is Loved
Having now dined twice at The British, North Adelaide in recent months I'd have to say we've been happy on both occasions. Beautifully cooked steaks served with chat potatoes and side serve of deliciously fresh steamed veg. On both occasions the service has been friendly and efficient. We'll definitely be back.

NEVER AGAIN.
Went for dinner the other day and was more than DISSAPOINTED. I had the eggplant moussaka wich was NOT a moussaka just bland but spicy lentils wrapped in rubbery oily eggplant..someone else i was with had it aswell and we both ate a bit and left it then filled up on chips and bread. Thw other two with us had steak small and dissapoining was the words they used. The red wine jue was yummy but other than that would not have again...not to mention the drink prices are rediculous and rude, very incompetant staff.

Bad service. Bad food. And food poisoning. What a horrible experience. Been here twice. The second time was worse than the first. Never going back.
Mike
Four of us went for dinner three had steak, fillet and two scotch fillet which were all tender and tasty one pork belly which was great too. Service and atmosphere excellent would definitely go back
NH
Awesome steak leave the pumpkin salad. Too much balsamic on pumpkin salad.

Steak? UNBELIEVIABLE!

Defo be back for the steak.

Not with that attitude!!!. Waited ages for our food to arrive and when it did, it was mediocre, nothing special. What really spoilt this restaurant for me was one of the waitress. She was extremely rude. When she came around to take our orders, she shortened my partner's name and didn't care if my partner liked it or not (he hates having his name shortened). She only had to write down two extra letters but no, called him what she preferred. When the food came out and she called out the dish, my friend next to me said it was hers but this waitress did not hear her the first time. When she place the dish on the table for my friend, she rudely told my friend to 'say it louder next time.'

I would not go back to an establishment with someone like her around.

Good food, but ZERO bicycle parking !. The British is a great North Adelaide institution. The food is great, but there is ZERO bicycle parking - if you except road signs and ornamental plants. Adelaide City Council provides bike parks liberally in Melbourne Street, it's noticeably lacking here. This is not good for the potential customers, nor is it good for local residents who must put up with just that much more care traffic if it's hard to come to the venue by bike. Here's what it should look like

Great food in a nice atmosphere. I went out for dinner Tuesday night with my parents and my boyfriend. We were meant to go somewhere else but my parents had been to the British the night before and insisted we go back. Well, I am SO glad we did. The atmosphere is quite unique, sort of like being under the pergola in someone's backyard, but cosy and of course nicer than you could ever get your own backyard to look. The pub itself is in a beautiful old building with a lot of character. The wine list was extensive and had some very nice choices for reasonable prices, although most only come by the bottle.

But, the FOOD!! Oh, the food. The night before, my family had eaten entrees and mains and been far too full for dessert, so on Tuesday we were under strict instructions to only eat mains so that we could order all of the desserts! I ordered two entrees to eat as a main - the arancini balls and meatballs - and both were delicious. The meatballs especially were a really big serve, 5 or 6 large meatballs with two pieces of turkish bread and some tzatziki. My boyfriend ordered the pie, which was amazing. He said he hadn't had a great pie like that in about 15 years, and that was somewhere out in the country where everything was homemade. My dad ordered the pork belly, he said it might have been better if it was cut into smaller pieces, but he really enjoyed it. My mum had the Caesar salad and it was great except for the egg, which was overcooked. All in all any complaints we had were only minor and we all loved our meals.

The desserts were absolutely standout. Everything was absolutely on point. We ordered a brownie with toasted marshmallows and sour cherries; banana pudding with toffee popcorn and salted caramel sauce; an affoghato; and the best of them all - turkish delight creme brulee with fairy floss. I highly recommend any of them but ESPECIALLY the creme brulee!

To sum it up: a great meal at a great place, definitely go, and save room for dessert!!

A good all-round pub with a menu better than most. I eat here every 6-8 weeks and enjoy the indoor / outdoor dining area. See some complaints about the comfort and space - chairs and tables seem fine to me - no issue and they fit well with the ambiance. Service is always fine, a bit slow on busy days, but who isn't? The extensive menu plus daily specials provide a great choice from cheap & cheery to a big solid meal. The kangaroo and the pork belly are my favourites, but the steak is hard to overlook - always good cuts available. Will stay on my list of good value meals in an environment where you can have a chat and enjoy a meal without the feeling you have overstayed your allocated table time!
Tony
The beef schnitzel was excellent and more than a centimeter think shame the staff dont listen - customer service been on the decline for years

Great place to catch up. Went their with long lost friends last night. Food was great, staff were helpful. Will go again anytime.

I've eaten here with my family twice and on both occassions have been very satisfied with the quality and taste of the meals and portion sizes with great service to match. I had the chicken breast with amazingly flavoured skin with a generous amount of herb and garlic butter with lots of chat potatoes. Highly recommend to try this quaint, relaxed pub out if you're wanting a delicious feed in North Adelaide!

Staff gave varying levels of service; one rude and one super helpful. We hadn't booked and it was Father's Day. A table was found & setup without fuss. Enjoyed the food and ambience in the beer garden.

Booked family dinner. Sunday night. Went to bar to order drinks. Was the back bar as advised. Stood there with money in my hand while girl behind bar served everybody but me. I can make some allowance for locals but it was not busy! Left. Complained to restaurant staff but they showed little concerned. Night destroyed.

This is the second time I've been back but never again. Service was prompt and food came out quickly. Steaks were ordered medium rare but came out burnt and well done! I ordered and paid for pepper jacks shiraz but was definitely served house red. Bad food topped by a rude waiter attempting to palm off nasty wine at a premium price

Loved the beautiful building and the open front kitchen. Staff manners do need a little improving and as per other reviews on here, the chairs could be a little more comfy. The food was impeccable although we chose this restaurant because there was a veggie option on the online menu, the menu at the pub was different so I had to have a salad. Salad was gourmet and yummy. Hubby had chicken breast and really enjoyed it. I have to wonder - has anyone tried the cook your own meat option?
TheSpartan
Not happy. Poor service & overpriced junk food.

Not a place I'll likely to hurry back to. Terribly uncomfortable deck chairs combined with tables too close together making it hard to get in and out then add the average tasting lamb shanks priced at $27... well not impressed

Delicious honey. I went to the British for a buck party on the weekend. The waitress called us all honey, which was obviously a major plus for the evening. The eating area had a large barbecue that looked inviting, but as we all have barbecues at home, we decided not to go down that path.

I ordered the crocodile, served medium rare, but honestly it was cooked medium, but I understand that as generally people don't really know how they want their meat cooked when they order it, apparently. The potatoes were delicious, and the lack of salad pleased the all, especially the buck.

Staff were lovely, food was good, if not a tad pricey, and cooked generally well. Pool table in the front bar certainly enhanced the evening, would have loved table service for beer, but I'm sure the staff would have got sick of our hilarious jokes and double entendres, so that is understandable.
Meg Bythesea
The food was ok but what was most disappointing was the service. Staff didn't know what was on the menu and our meals came out at different times, so some were cold by the time all 4 meals had been served. We also had to ask twice for salt.

Pick your steak.. I have severe allergies so when I look for a good restaurant, I'm not only weighing up the safety of getting exactly what I can eat without fear of contamination, but the manner in which its served.
For the British Staff, this is not a problem.
Friendly and pleasant both on the phone during booking and in person, and able to tell you exactly what they can do for you without making you feel like the world's most picky customer (as I'm sure I must sound and they must feel sometimes!)
On one occasion they were even kind enough to offer some of the berries and pears they use for garnishes as an alternative to dessert!
Only weak spot is the bar is quite pricey, even for soft drinks, but I'm willing to pay in appreciation.
I Eat Adelaide
Late lunch. My friends and I popped in for a lateish lunch on Monday 3rd Jan and I must admit I was a little reluctant fearing the need to do my own cooking. I was pleasantly surprised. Apart from a little attitude from the girl behind the bar who had opened a bottle while I was still perusing the rather extensive wine list, it was a really delightful lunch. Not many there but the food was delicious and I LOVED the red wine jus.

Had an early meal and stayed on for a few drinks afterwards. Food was standard pub food, no complaints. Staff seemed more interested in talking to eachother than serving and we found that as the evening went on the crowd were pretty rough and rowdy.
Ilovebagels
Not so British. This place has a nice vibe with the cosy front bar and log fire but the drinks are too expensive. I paid 9.50 for a tiny bottle of cider :(
Darren
Always enjoy the great food and excel
Casual Diner
This time we did forget the Gravy.... I don't want to rain on the whole menu...but if I go to a pub and ask for Chicken Snitzel with Gravy...chips and salad...that's what I sorta think I am going to get. Unfortunately the British served up the Schnitzel (across the chips)...with a 'garnish' of salad. That's cool...I will let that fly, but what's with the pretend gourmet gravy? No 'standard pub gravy'?...I have to had red wine jus gravy - sorry British but you need to keep the KISS principal with pub-grub.
Mike
Good steak. Pleasant venue with reasonable pup food. Enjoyed my steak but my guest thought her meal was a bit average.
Casual SA Diner
Possibly the only real pub in north Adelaide. Thank goodness the posers haven't found it yet. Love choosing my own steak. Great little front bar.
Adelaidefoodcentral
Customers have a choice of all the popular proteins, and for $4 less than the regular price, you have a choice of cooking the meat yourself. They also have a decent selection of entrees and mains from various influences, as well as your traditional pub fare.
