Review Silk And Spice Thai Restaurant - Adelaide

The food is awesome, but the service should get more improved. We ordered three dishes with steam rice and waited more than 25 mins, and they did not give me the small bowls actively only two plates because we are a couple, so we did not know how to have the rice with the curry. I suggest the owner should hire more staff, because your staff can not do many things at the same time, it will cause some complaints from customers. Good food, the service can not catch up the food.

First time trying this restaurant! Was quite disappointed overall at the quality of food and wait times. We didn’t even go around dinner rush times lol and we had to wait quite a bit between the entree and mains. We ordered the Choo Chee Salmon curry, pad Thai, green curry, soft shell crab with papaya salad, squid and coconut rice. Portion sizes for everything was quite small considering the price. Everything else was okay taste wise but the sauce was split for the squid as shown in the photo which made it a bit unappetising sadly and the coconut rice was too mushy. Staff did appear uninterested in helping us when we asked if our last dish was coming. Waited about half an hour for it and we wanted to cancel but they told us it was ready. So we waited another 15 mins before it finally came out. Defo one of my disappointing food experiences in Adelaide! Don’t think we’ll be back unfortunately 😔

Myself and 2 others visited last night Sat June 25th. Was very clean although no music playing and a lack of ambience with a few other diners and a few take away orders but not overly busy. Tried to order drinks- but they couldnt make any cocktails and no wines except for Brut were available....Looking forward to the Pandan chicken and it came out RAW. Blood red raw. . GROSS.. At the end they tried to over charge us for extra meals which we had to dispute. Very very average.

Dishes are always delicious, especially the pad Thai - best in town. Saturday nights are very busy, so book with time and be patient. The staff does their best and they are always friendly.

Ok pretty average, if you are looking for authentic thaifood not the place.

Ambience is nice. Food is good. I think coconut rice can use a bit more coconut cream and just a bit more sugar. Parking is just at the back of the establishment. Staff are nice too.

Loved their food. Fish was worth it. But beef curry and fried rice seemed less in quantity compared to the price. Taste was amazing though 😋

Popped in for lunch today. I ordered the Panang Pork Curry and my wife ordered a Green Chicken Curry (minus the chicken) for the lunchtime specials menu. We were both very pleased with our choices and it was great value. Both were only $10. They weren't busy today but my wife said she had been here for lunch before and it was very busy. The service was great.

What a lovely surprise of a Thai restaurant on a road in Adelaide that has 3 other Thai restaurants! I highly recommend the barramundi with green apple salad ... the fish is fresh as and the balance of the sour from the topping makes this dish as authentic as you can get. If you don’t specify, they serve you the fish whole ... the only way to eat fish. As with many Thai folks, they fry fish really well here: crispy from nose to tail. I found out that the chef is from the northern regions of Thailand, which explains the more-than-usual green leafy stir fries available. Situated in an old bungalow, the ambience is lovely though not really a priority for me when I want good food. We also had the roast duck curry (not my choice) which was okay, as with all other roast duck curries. As always with great South-East Asian cooking, eaten with steamed rice is best. I will definitely return to try the other chef’s specialties.

Food was nice enough, but the cleanliness was a real let down. Going to the bathroom to find bin overflowing with sanitary products (when we were first there for the lunch trade) was definitely off putting. I can only the kitchen is cleaner...

The food was amazing service really good couldn't fault it cannot believe we moved into the area 3 years ago and this is our first time we will certainly be back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to any one else

Visited this amazing hidden gem on Henley Beach Road. The place has number of amazing Thai food options along with famous Thailand Beers. The staff was amazing in recommending the food to us and were happy to customize a dish as per my dietary requirement. I cant wait to visit the place again.

Great spot.... Food is fantastic, staff always friendly and great value for money. Always on our list when in Adelaide..... Bring back No 5 :-)

I love Thai food and this definitely one of my favorite Thai. We ordered one of the beef dish (can't remember which one), pad thai and of course the green papaya salad. My partner doesn't eat spicy food so I had the papaya salad for myself - I don't think I would want to share anyway :) The food was really nice and we were happy with the service too. To top it all, we use the entertainment card so we paid a fraction of the bill which was pretty good. Will definitely come back.

food is great! a little bit difficult to see the restaurant when you drive past but it is worth going. i love their crispy chicken. it is very special and has lots of flavours in it

Food was pretty decent but I've had better. Took far too long to bring food out, was waiting 30+ minutes for mains after the entrees. Wouldn't go back

The service was excellent, the menu was extensive and the prices were good! Best pad thai I have had in a long time, the money bags and duck curry with lychees were both amazing too!

Love the red curry! Will come again with friends. The Crispy Golden Money Bag was a surprise and it's soooo yum. Will try pad Thai and other dishes next time!

This is one of the above average Thai restaurants we have been to but still not good enough to attract us back. Again we have tried so many Thai restaurants as dine ins and takeaways and there are too many better ones including quite a few in the western suburbs even one very close to this one.
JoJo
Enjoyed the Pad Thai with prawns from the lunch menu, which arrived in less than 10 minutes. Washed down with a chilled glass of unwooded Chardonnay. Good service and a nice cosy restaurant. Price was fantastic; $9.90 from the lunch menu.
Laura
Surprisingly good! The restaurant itself looks pretty uninspiring from the road but the food was great. The green curry was delicious one I added a bit more chilli to it.

Great Thai. Awesome duck curry that was extremely fragrant, phad thai and larp salad all delicious. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for a Thai place!

Seriously delicious, probably one of the best meals of my life. Had barramundi in red curry sauce, my sister had whole barramundi with apple salad and the serving sizes were just right. Service was pleasant and quick as well. Awesome!

Mr Alan Edwards. 8 of us went there Sat. nite 28 March - great food BUT all meals came out a long time apart, many were finished before others even had there meals.Upon polite complaining no compensation offered, no apologies at all. Very poor PR back up. No manager appeared . We reluctantly paid but will never go back.

Awesome Food. Visited the restraunt with friends last night. The food was excellent - all of my friends raved about their food. The service was good, staff very friendly. Overall we were all impressed and would visit again.

Excellent meal and friendly staff .. well worth another visit

Food just as gross as the service.. Ordered take away. asked for prawns in oyster sauce with veg... got home and had some omlette looking dish. called to let them know of thier mistake and the staff argued with me about what I ordered. rest of food was bland with no flavour. chicken larb is worst I have ever had. red duck curry tasted like it was made with the cheapest meat possible. many other great thai resturants near by, save yourself and go there instead!

Fan-thai-stic!. We were a dinner party of 4 and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

The prawn based salad stood out amongst the entrees and the fried barramundi was easily the star of the main course. Fresh and vibrant flavors with the right balance of spice as one would expect of Thai food.

Sticky rice is the main staple for dessert but they also interestingly had a non-thai selection of panna cotta+berries which was a deliciously contrasting way to end the meal.

Service is attentive while the decor and ambience is warm and inviting without being excessive and obtrusive as tends to occur in a lot of Asian restaurants.

This one's definitely a keeper!
Casual SA Diner
Great staff. Genuine smiles. Delicious food. Good prices. Nice decor.
Local diners may need a lesson in dressing for a restaurant, behaviour etc. (thongs, baseball caps, talking loudly on mobile phone, taking shoes off)
But the restaurant is solid.

Excellent Thai food.. Came here for the first time for dinner with a group of four. We had Pandan chicken and some seafood salad for entrees. For mains, we ordered their special thai chicken and barramundi with mango salad. We also had massamum beef and prawn choo chee curries. The food was superb! Service was great too. We would definitely return and recommend this place. It's a pity that we live far away from this place.

Food that makes you want more. "I want more" - an apt description for the reactions of myself and my friends on our first trip to Silk and Spice. Every dish was bursting with essential elements of a successful meal: flavour, freshness and variety.

And while I don't normally pay attention to service, decor or atmosphere, I have to mention these were present in abundance. First step in the door and we were greeted by a friendly waitress who showed us to a table promptly and handed us the menus. Since it was our first time, we asked for her recommendations; remarkably she was able to describe each dish to us in simple, relateable terms. What was even more impressive was that she had tried every single dish! And pointed out her favourites to us.

Silk and Spice delivers on its word, it delivers exciting and tantalising meals, cooked with skill and care, within a homely, warm and welcoming atmosphere. A place where you can relax with friends and family and yet have world-class meals. Rarely do restaurants achieve this delicate balance but they certainly have.

Met the grade. Wow... Rilasciando, I don't know what you were complaining about. This place was fine. Girls who served us were friendly and attentive, food was fresh and tasty, and the atmosphere was nice. Ok, so I wouldn't stake my life on saying it's the most amazing restaurant in the world, and I've been to Tongue Thai'd, and yes it's nice. But sometimes you just want something different from one restaurant's menu or style. I feel as though I'm criticing your critic, because personally, complaining that they made your beer foamy or spilt a drop of wine...well, that's a bit on the mean side...but I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, and we all have different tastes.
Anyway - Silk and Spice, I respect that Thai food is all about the balance of sweet, spicey, tangy etc. but I was really glad you didn't over kill the palm sugar. Your food had a real freshness.
Rilasciando
Highly overrated. Go to Tongue Thai'd! First of all our 2-week-in-advance booking had somehow disappeared.... We were seated apologetically nonetheless. Ambience was busy in terms if people, but felt hectic. The restaurant could do with some background music. The service was slow and unattentive; one of the waitresses could hardly speak English! One of our entrees did not come with the other three and only did after it was told to staff. The waitresses also had no idea how to pour a beer, which resulted in my hefeweizen forming a head up 3/4 of the glass. Another also dripped wine down a glass whilst pouring that. After a sizeable wait, bordering on unacceptably too long, out came the mains. Ok, but nothing special. There are many other Thai restaurants around with better food. Perhaps a good take away option, but avoid the horrendous dine-in experience!

Nice fresh food and authentic flavours. Will definitely return. Oh, and the service was very pleasant too

Well worth the return visit. I last visited Silk and Spice when it first opened in 2010 (I think) and was very impressed with the quality of the food and the friendly service. I've ordered from their take-away menu a few times since and decided to give the restaurant another visit when my sister and her partner dropped in from interstate.

The surroundings and ambiance have changed very little since my last visit - the polished floor boards and warmly coloured walls providing the perfect background to the rich traditional gowns of the waiting staff.

Our group of five had a spread of entrees and mains from the main and specials menu and we were generally impressed with the flavours and frangrances of both courses. The spicy lamb and chicken dishes were perfectly tender and the sweet and sour fried whole barramundi was a delight. The wine list offers a good range of quality wines to match the Thai menu.

Our only quibble for the evening was with the service which seemed a bit rushed and uncoordinated when we would have liked a bit more time between courses. You certainly won't die waiting between courses at this restaurant.

I definitely won't be waiting three years to make a return visit.

I can't think of a better Thai Green Curry I have eaten anywhere.

Good. We decided to try Silk and Spice before a show at Thebarton Theatre and explained that we needed to be out by 7.00pm. Not a problem. The staff were really friendly and efficient with taking orders. The food was great. The vermicelli salad and money bags for entree were delicious and fresh and the barramundi and pad thai mains were excellent - we will be going back for the barramundi dish!

@ Jabba - from the team at Silk & Spice. @Jabba

Although generally not one to comment and/or respond to restaurant review sites, as the proud owners of this establishment we felt it only fair that we respond to your review of our restaurant. Silk & Spice Thai Restaurant has been trading for just over 4 years, and to correct your ill-formed assumptions, has not changed ownership nor has our Thai chef changed (a little older – yes, rounder in the mid section – most definitely). Our chef is northern-eastern Thai if you need to know, not that ethnicities matters when cooking any type of cuisine.

We pride ourselves on the food that we offer and the service we provide to our amazing customers. We are passionate about the food industry, Thai food and all types of Southeast Asian food in general. We value feedback positive or negative, and feel that communication is essential in this environment. In saying this, a conversation with staff/management on the night or a follow up email or phone call with your qualms would have been responded to in a positive manner, allowing us to arrange something for you.

Just a final note, to ease your mind on the particulars of Thai cuisine, one of the most recognised and celebrated chefs versed in Thai cuisine (as recognised and endorsed by Thai Royalty ) is Australia’s own David Thompson. Also, if you think Adelaidians have no taste, maybe the problem is not with Adelaidians. It would also appear that you are well versed in your Thai foods as can be seen from your plethora of reviews of Thai restaurants, which leads us to believe you’re Thai. Please come in and have a chat with our Chef if you have the opportunity (In Thai preferably).

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or require assistance with any information, regards Vanthana – Silk & Spice Thai.

No longer has a Thai chef. Went there on a Sunday Evening expecting something reasonable.

Horrible food. Found out why. No longer Thai owned. Chinese run, chef chinese and food is tasteless, mock Thai.

How can a dish specified as medium spicy come out with absolutely no chilli.

This one is just another so called Thai restaurant run by mercantile chinese riding off the reputation of what was probably once a good Thai restaurant.

But most Adelaidians wouldn't know what good food was if it punched them in the face.

Hopeless.

Go to Yum Yai up the road for a far superior real Thai experience.

Eat in or take away. Most definitely our favourite local eatery! Service is always friendly and the food .... fresh and full of flavour.

The service appears to be personal but it isn't. Food is not authentic Thai. The signature dish is the special duck which is cooked in Chinese style. The ambience is a bit fake, try hard to be Thai.

Food is fantastic. Food is obviously fresh. Service is generally very good. Staff are very friendly. I can see this place becoming a regular. Only negative is that the deserts are a bit boring and presentation isn't at the same levels as the mains.

Fantastic Food. I love the food here. It's really fresh and not overly oily or covered with MSG or artificial flavours. It tastes like real food and they manage to create some very tasty dishes. The ambience is great too. I think this place is very good value for money and I plan on being a regular customer here.

Brilliant. Silk and spice, a very friendly environment, all the staff are attentive and regularity is always recognise, they continue to serve and provide drinks, creating a very calm and relaxing ambience. The food is beautiful! I have tried everything on the menu, as one of the previous reviews mentions that the food portion is small, but if you attend to any nice restaurant, it is expected that it's about quality and not quantity, I was highly satisfied after my visit. I is also comforting that they have a rear parking lot, being that most places do not provide easy access for parking, such as gouger street where it is almost nearly impossible to find a park on any night of the week.
The interior of the restaurant is very intriguing as they have decorative ornaments that are authentic and warm, the space sets the mood for a relaxing dinner.

Also as mentioned previously I do not think it is necessary for tea to be constantly refilled as it not a fast pace environment or a chinese restaurant.
By observing the staff and customers in my surroundings these people are here to have a nice dinner, food to come out slowly and to enjoy their wine, and good food.
Behind any restaurant you find that all rubbish disposals are left there, either that or they have the space to place their rubbish elsewhere, so I do not blame the exterior of the place on their ability to have a clean restaurant/ kitchen and provide good food because that's what that matters.
I'll definitely be returning.

Disappointed. Room for improvement.. Driving into their carpark during daylight hours was rather alarming as the plants were overgrown and not well tended. Used bottles and crates were stacked haphazardly at t he back of the restraunt. As I sat waiting for my fellow guests who were 10 minutes late, all I got was the menu, and not even an offer glass of water.

We ordered some green chicken curry, their special duck and som tham, and spicy fish . The som tham , fish and chicken were nice, and well presented, though I thought the portions were quite small.

We waited almost an hour before we realised that the special duck dish was not coming- the waitress apparently forgot to place the order with the cook.

The chef was quite apologetic and brought us an extra dessert in compensation.

Our pot of tea was constantly empty and the staff were slow to refill it. This is a barometer to attentiveness of service in any Asian restraunt.

Conclusion:

Quality of food: Food tasty and afffordable. Smallish portions

Service: Poor

Ambience: Parking area needs major cleanup.

Having driven past this place many times, I actually had no idea Silk and Spice existed, let alone the fact that this restaurant has been around for over 5 years. Silk and Spice is located in a renovated bungalow on the busy Henley Beach Road. Excluding the specials, there are over 40 dishes to choose from which are categorised into entrees, salads, soups, curries, meat, seafood, vegetarian, rice and noodle dishes. Anybody that is a fan of Thai food would be familiar with most of the dishes.

A is for Aroi mak – meaning ‘delicious’ in Thai! Our dinner at Silk and Spice was indeed aroi mak! Silk and Spice was announced the 2013 Best Thai restaurant in the ‘Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence” ( http://www.brandsouthaustralia.com.au/news/member-news/sa-winners-announced-at-2013-restaurant-catering-awards-for-excellence ). I’m not sure how accurate a reflection these awards are and what criteria was used to judge – so we decided to try it out for ourselves as well as celebrate my boyfriend’s father’s birthday. Also bonus that it is in the Entertainment Book – woo hoo! It was fairly easy to find with the lit up sign outside the cottage style house-turned-restaurant, with a little car park at the back. The sign was too bright for my camera! The interior was very cosy as it was a house transformed into dining areas. There were traditional Thai artwork displayed on the walls as well as waitresses dressed in traditional Thai clothing, which created a Thai atmosphere but r
