The waitress remembered my name after greeting me at the front door and continued to address me by my name throughout the night. I was pretty impressed. There is a large range of food to choose from which made deciding difficult. We ordered a large boat which took an hour to come out even though they were not busy that night. The tuna was still frozen but the other pieces of sushi were ok. Probably won't return but it wasn't a bad experience.
Arigatou gozaimasu Hotaru. Once again very enjoyable night goyza was very tasty as well as the karaage chicken. And I must say sukiyaki oishi katta desu. Thank you once again for a very enjoyable meal
Arigato Hotaru for making father's day lunch an excellent one as you have provided me , wifey and my son superb japanese cuisine. We had the tempura, tonkatsu, teppanyaki beef and the lovely sashimi / sushi . The host was so gracious to welcome us and patiently answered some of our questions . The ambiance really make for an authentic Jap restaurant. We will definitely come back . I heard that they have a place at the back where you can watch the chef cook your food. Something to forward . Cheers.
Went to Hotaru (again) last night with friends.
The reason we keep going there is that it's so good!
The staff are very friendly and generally very efficient. The food is excellent and the prices are reasonable.
The location is away from the busy end of town. It's NOT one of your "in" or "trendy" places to eat with loud music, loud people and awful food. That's why we like it! It's a simple quiet little restaurant where you can sit and have a normal conversation without having to shout or risk tinnitus.
You can actually enjoy yourself! What more could you need?
Very good!. Very impressed with food and service. Eggplant is a must try fish
Saturday lunch. Very quiet but well worth the visit. Everything made to order and couldn't be any fresher if you tried. The sushi/sashimi boat was excellent. Service was great as you expect when things are quiet but the waitress took time to explain all the varieties. Wished we had taken a photo before we devoured it.
Fine. Been here twice. The first time we were so drunk it wasnt funny but the staff put up with us and served us some yum food. Second time, service was a bit slow and there never seemed to be any staff around when my beer was empty..food was sensational though
Beautiful food, great service, really fresh Japanese food and great value, will definitely go back!
Warm & wonderful. I am amazed at a couple of reviews here. Can only assume they have a different restaurant?!
Whenever I want Japanese food, having travelled Japan and tried every other Japanese restaurant in Adelaide (and quite a few in Sydney i might add) I now go straight to Hotaru.
The warm and friendly (clearly Japanese @basta basta!?) woman who I assume is the owner is always very quick to greet and seat. The drinks list is comprehensive and priced right - I enjoy both Sake and Japanese beer greatly, so that's important to me.
If you like sashimi, I reccomend the six kind sashimi where you can sample both giant clam and red clam, in addition to sashimi regulars like salmon, tuna & kingfish. If you prefer more standard (and LARGE) fare order a boat, you won't be disappointed.
You can't go wrong with any of the teppanyaki meals, or the Japanese standards like fried pork chop. I reccomend going with friends and ordering a series of dishes with plenty of beer and sake - It won't cost you the earth and the food and drink go together wonderfully.
Finish off with a glass of Umeshu plum wine then head next door to Sugarbowl for desert. The best Japanese experience you can get in Adelaide.
We had a really good night. Great Miso, great sashimi of tuna belly and kingfish. Tempura vegetables were great. Great beer & wine & under $40pp. Our waitress was cute and polite. Happy to go back again.
