Review My Kingdom For A Horse - Adelaide

Sahar Fakhri
We ordered a beef patty burger (24$) and a build-your-own choice and Cured Ocean Trout (23$). The food tasted delicious and we super liked the garnish! The size and proportion of 2 of dishes were quite stingy compared to what we paid for. The service was amazing and the environment with the natural plants was exactly what we wanted after a long day.

This café has changed my opinion about 2021 entirely. What a great year! I just received exceptional service and a meal of such perfection I’m just ecstatic. There’s so much to try on the breakfast menu, amazing options for vegetarians and vegans and just, wow. If you’re stuck for choice, try the soul bowl.

Service was a little slow, although it was a public holiday. Food wait times were 45 minutes but we were told on arrival, so communication was good. The food was quite tasty. I had the Seoul Bowl. Majority of staff were wearing their masks appropriately, except for the main waiter, which was disappointing to see.

Definitely a must try in Adelaide! Opens on Saturday, good opportunity to fill your caffeine craving. Food taste great.
Honest Review
Excellent coffee and service. Atmosphere is great too. Can't say I'd order the kingdom full breakfast again but definitely the shashuska eggs with added chorizo is.
Jeremy
Great coffee and food. The handorf thick cut bacon was very very good!
Lance Lee
Nice place to sit done and have brunch. Good coffee too!
Trent Boyle
Brilliant service, fantastic coffee, and even better food.

I used to love this place, and then a few months ago it started going downhill. I have tried to go back 3 times now hoping it was just a bad experience but I won’t be back again. The service is no longer that friendly, even when the place is not busy the main server makes you feel like you are putting him out. My partner and I were seated and given menus then forgotten about for close to 15 minutes. When we tried to have someone take our order we were brushed off rudely and made to feel like we were a burden. The meals were extremely overpriced for the amount of food you get, so it’s really not worth the hassle.

My honest opinion is that the coffee was average to ok and the premises and location was great.<br/>The food is a complete let down and it's a shame because I really wanted to like this place.<br/><br/>The food is also overpriced for the portion sizes but that wouldn't be an issue if the food was actually outstanding but unfortunately for me it wasn't. The food is edible but not something I would want to pay for again as I've already been cheated by what was dished up. The menu is somewhat authentic but not in a positive way that captivated my tastebuds!<br/><br/>The service is poor when you read a sign when entering premises indicating "Please wait to be seated" but nobody acknowledges you are waiting whilst staff are talking behind the counter.<br/><br/>In all fairness, I'm not sure why the reviews are so high for this business? I now know the truth behind the business name :-)
Lily
The polenta stack, absolutely delicious. Fluffiest polenta I've ever tasted.<br/>Staff were incredibly lovely and cafe had a beautiful relaxed feel with loads of plants and a good choice of music
LJ
Good food but found the prices of meals expensive for what you get. <br/><br/>Good coffee and nice atmosphere.<br/><br/>Friendly staff and good service........
Foodiegal
One of my favourite places for coffee and brunch. Great food, amazing coffee and the best bit about it is that it’s kid-friendly. If you included a baby change table in the toilet, I couldn’t ask for more :) A regular weekend haunt!

Great breakfast friendly and generous serves - I’m a big eater but I struggled to finish. Service was fast and friendly. Shared with friends and all enjoyed.

Been meaning to try this place on one of many visits to Adelaide after hearing about it from a friend in Melbourne, and finally got round to it! Great coffee and the breakfast menu was extensive with some unusual additions including the smoked trout Scandinavian Open sandwiches.... won’t even try and spell their legitimate name! 😆 service was quick and friendly, would definitely go again

The service was great, very friendly staff! Although unfortunately the food was below average. I had the falafel bowl which was nothing more than cut up veggies in a bowl. No flavour at all and it cost $22! Also got the hand cut chips which were soggy with little flavour and also over priced. The freshly squeezed orange juice tasted diluted and cost $6.50 for a medium sized glass. Overall was very disappointed in the food, never going back.

Love this place! After discovering this place for a quick coffee, I’ve been back 3 times and bought a bag of beans for home use! Presentation and atmosphere in this place is great. Service has always been so friendly and welcoming and the food is perfection 👌 Same goes for the coffee obviously and I haven’t even tapped into the treat window yet. I can see why this place has won numerous awards.

Good food, great coffee, very friendly waiters but very slow service. <br/><br/>When we first arrived we were seated quickly and they were not too full except for a large party. It was a Saturday morning and it seems they haven't put on too many staff because of penalty rates? Nonetheless they took our orders quickly and the coffees came soon thereafter. Lovely. I had a magic. Beautiful latte art. Very nice flavour and the right temperature. <br/><br/>However, I have this belief where the food should always come before the first cup of coffee is finished (and I don't drink my coffee that fast). We waited, and waited, and waited... eventually ordered a long mac. This came and went, the place filled up and finally the food came. <br/><br/>When it did come it was good. I had the Shakshouka. It was just a little bit spicy which is the way I like it. I couldn't work out why for a dish where all you had to do was crack some eggs into a pre made sauce and then stick it in the oven it could take 45 minutes. I had just done a 5 km run so I was very hungry.<br/><br/>In conclusion, a nice place to come to if you had all morning to wait!

Forgot to take a photo of my meal, but had the “build your own brekkie” with sourdough bread, poached eggs and a potato rostie. Was all delicious and would go back. Only negative was they ran out of hollandaise sauce, but service was great!

I have been to MKFH a few times for brunch. Most times it’s been easy to get a table. It’s got a bright, well lit interior with lots of sunlight. Food was okay, nothing to rave about. I would recommend the baos & the waffles. Coffee portion was pretty disappointing. I had to order two just to get through breakfast.
Only If Its Good
I remember hearing about this eatery nearly 2 years ago, thinking, "Odd name but I like it." After that day I've been keeping an eye on it. Checking the menu every now and again, looking at reviews and watching it from afar. <br/><br/>The day had come for a visit. The eatery we had dinner at the previous night was disappointing and I needed to write a review. No, I won't be telling you the name of it. <br/><br/>Driving there was interesting, I thought I'd been almost everywhere in the city, apparently not. I'd never been to Wright st in Adelaide. Plenty of small office buildings, light industrial intermingled with housing. Parking was a breeze, car parks right in front of MKFaH, where in the city could you do that with ease?<br/><br/>It's a large cafe with a lot of seating, yes even the dreaded stools which some people seem to like sitting on, for the life of me can not figure out why. The staff greeted us with a smile and advised we could sit anywhere.<br/>To read the rest of my review, click on the website below.

Wouldnt mind forking out what i spent on bacon and eggs if the service was amazing.<br/>Unfortunately got terrible service at the counter from staff while trying to pay on behalf of friends which also wanted to grab the whole bill. The girl that served us kept rolling her eyes as we fought over who paid and snark comments from other staff behind the counter wasn't at all very nice. Will never go there ever again after the way it made us feel.

I reviewed this place a year ago and went back again recently... It's definitely gone downhill over the last year. The food has dropped in quality. Staff aren't efficient and service is extremely slow. What a shame
Chris
Solidly consistent best describes this establishment. Friendly staff, diverse menu and a sweet range of coffee. Enjoyed setting at the window/bench with the light breeze blowing through 👌
Miss Dee
Very overpriced for nothing overly fancy. Local produce being used is a draw card but a snobby waitress was the downfall. Coffee (filter) was not too bad. My mum & I got smashed Avo for breakfast and it was $17-$20 with one extra. The menu on Zomato is outdated so what we were going to order was not on the current menu (not their fault). After being seated (we the only 5 people in the venue as we arrived at opening) it took the lady 10mins to bring us water and then taking our order appeared to be an inconvenience to her. Not for a horde of younger people who arrived later though who were known to her. $120+ for 4 meals and 5 coffees = very disappointing
Mashedpotato
I had the cornbread waffles with salmon. The salmon portion was very generous, and the dish was lovely, but next time I would add a poached egg.My friend had the baked eggs with feta. The melt is not a melt unless you pay $2 extra for cheese. At $21 this is almost the most expensive burger in the world. It is not worth this price

Food was so good. The staff were very knowledgeable and great coffee. I came because a coffee snob friend told me about this place and now I see why 😊
Olivia Franco
Had an excellent breakfast at My Kingdom! Service was friendly and fast. The decor is funky yet cosy, I love the leather booths and wall art. The coffee was nice, made with fresh beans and hot. The breakfast tortilla was excellent, made with fresh and generous ingredients. Highly recommend!
Samantha
A great place for breakky! A friend and I had a lovely mid-week breakfast here. The cafe was nice and quiet and it was a nice day so we sat outside in the sunshine. Importantly, the staff were prompt with our coffee, order was taken straight away, arrived soon after and was delicious. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. The menu has so many great options it is difficult to choose! Will definitely be back to try some other options.
Alex McQuinn
This place is a bit overpriced. I had the shakshouka and the eggs were horribly overlooked which ruined it. A friend had the avo on toast and it was pretty good but pretty skimpy on the serving size. Waited too long for food. Good coffee.<br/><br/>Would I return? No, I have been here 3 times now for two bad and one ok meals.
Karylle
I think the weirder the cafe name, the better the food and coffee. They offer breakfast and lunch - but I find the breakfast menu way better. My absolute favourite is the Eggs Benedict with dill hollandaise and ham hock (pictured) - one of the best I've had! The omelette was originally what got me to come back but they've changed it a slightly since I first went here. Coffee here is even better than the food - seriosusly good! I also like that its a street away from Gouger St, so it's still in a central location but in a quieter spot. I rate this place highly and always recommend it when people ask for my top brunch spots.
F😘
I had the French toast and a coffee both were great!<br/>I loved the coffee!!! Slow service but food made up for it, although slow, service was great, overall enjoyed thoroughly and will be back!
Ching
Came here as I was intrigued by the name and also at the recommendation of friends. I really liked the location, at first I couldn't understand why they chose wright street but after having gone there it's actually quite a beautiful and quiet street with gorgeous trees outside. I got the yoghurt with the granola which is quite yummy but was deathly sweet so I couldn't finish it. My friend's handcut chips were good, but were a bit soggy to my liking. Also service was pretty average, we sat there for ages and no one came to take our order even though the cafe was basically empty. I probly would come back again but there are other places I'd prefer to go for brunch.
Tania Augustin
The portion might look small, but trust me it'll feed you enough. The bun was soft, chicken was tender. While I am more into crispy fries, their fries didn't disappoint me.

Visited over the long weekend. I really enjoyed the Kingdom hot chocolate. The house baked beans were good but not the best around; with an added egg they were definitely filling!
Aszpad
Visited on Easter Sunday, we tried to book prior, but unfortunately they do not take them. We got a table right away. The service is very friendly; they were wearing there easter bunny ears which was a nice touch. The coffee is strong and enjoyable. The juice is freshly squeezed. I ordered the eggs benny. I love an eggs benedict. It's my go to breakfast when I go out. They served it with pork hock. Usually not a fan when they change these things. But this time they have nailed it on the head. Fantastic!!! Would love to come back and try the lunch menu!
Valaina
Staff were super friendly and inviting. Really loved the arrangement of the cafe- how it was open and spacious with seats facing out front. It didn't take long for food and coffee to arrive. Presentation was as good as it tasted (amazing!). I would definitely recommend this place to others, and come back to try the rest of their menu!
Lauren Hokulani
This place is a hidden gem. It was right behind our hotel!!!<br/>It was suggested we try it. So we did. <br/>The wait staff were amazing!!! No complaints!<br/>So, my overall review?<br/>Service: AMAZING! FRIENDLY AND SMILES!<br/>FOOD: it wasnt the best I had (To be fair, I am comparing the dish i had to another place we went to) but it was pretty awesome. <br/>Parking: loads infront of cafe<br/>Overall: I highly recommend it!!!!!
Emily
Terrible service. Today we were in the cafe with my 18 month year old son and they forgot his baby chino (no apologies). Then half an hour later no one had even come to take our order (they were not busy). This is the second time we have received terrible service and we won't be back.

Very excited to visit 'My Kingdom for a Horse' only to be somewhat disappointed with the initial greeting by the Maitre De. There was a VERY GRUMPY woman on the door responding to customers int he line waiting to be seated. She had died, silver white hair and her name was Emily and she made an extremely poor first impression. She was rather unwelcoming and seemed to be so put out that people were wanting to come in the door that we almost left and went elsewhere. Luckily for he owners there were very few alternative places open due tot he Christmas period closure & we decided to stay regardless of the rude service on arrival. Food took almost an hour to arrive but the coffees were decent and the atmosphere created by other customers was vibrant & jolly despite the rudeness that each would have been impacted by upon arrival. Emily should reconsider the industry she works in...she looked positively miserable and was completely disinterested in receiving new customers arriving at the door.

I had been wanting to visit My Kingdom for a Horse for a very, very long time, but never got the chance because it was at an inconvenient location for me. Luckily, they have partnered with UberEats and are now offering delivery.<br/><br/>My dish of choice was the Zucchini and feta fritters with chargrilled polenta with spicy<br/>tomato sauce ($18.90). The fritters arrived freshly made; nice and hot and wonderfully crispy. To call them fritters, however, is being a bit misleading. These were more like vegetable croquettes. The filling was very loosely packed and was encased in a crispy batter. Nevertheless they were very delicious.<br/><br/>The polenta cubes were alright. They were rather hard and not really fluffy like I had hoped. They tasted a bit bland, too. <br/><br/>The dish came with a few leaves on the side, which really didn't need to be there. They were literally just plain leaves and did not add anything to the dish. I was a bit disappointed the fritters weren't paired with a proper salad.<br/><br/>Overall it was a very enjoyable meal, however $18.90 does seem a bit steep.

Another hidden gem in Adelaide! Service was pretty good, plenty of seating which is great for larger groups. The menu has great variety and definitely something to please everyone with a few unique items. I would definitely recommend the chicken sliders, and the white chocolate sauce waffles (SO GOOD!!) Parking can be a little hard in the area, but definitely worth it for the food!

My Kingdom for a Horse is a bright, clean and spacious licensed cafe on Wright Street. It has lots of natural light, beautiful decor and a wonderful menu to fulfil any hunger pain, the coffee is great too! I held a function at the venue in November and Management & staff (Emily and Jenna) were incredible. They met our needs and provided great service throughout the evening. I highly recommend MK4AH for coffee dates with friends, breakfast, or lunch with the lads. Congrats to the owners Emily and Rachel for establishing this wonderful place for people to meet, eat and enjoy.

Loved this place! The floor space of the cafe is huge....creating space yet still containing many tables, great decor, lovely staff...so hipster. The menu offers various brunchy dishes along with a large array of beverages from teas to cocktails. Dishes were fresh, full of flavour and beautifully cooked.
Udiberi
Overpriced. Cold coffee. But good service. The chairs are funky but uncomfortable. Cold in winter. It needs to be a little warmer. The food needs to be more flavour then pretty things on a plate. Average food but presented beautifully. Not sure if I will go back.

New trendy eatery in the city. <br/><br/>Didn't mind the decor not too studied for a change. Comfortable even. <br/><br/>Service was actually really bad with things forgotten and someone in our party having got go up to order more drinks. <br/><br/>The food was okay. <br/><br/>I had the Spicy Israeli eggs. They weren't spicy and I've had better baked egg dishes since. <br/><br/>
Meg Cornish
I love the name......environment nice aesthetically, feels good especially for breakfast! Coffee excellent and food pretty good, they cover a range of usual but well cooked meals. Interesting little hash browns, baked beans a little cold. Waiting staff attentive. If you are looking for a good variety of breakfast fare and good coffee this is perfect!

Best brekky place in Adelaide!<br/>A must try is the dirty chai latte (with a shot of espresso). I could taste both the chai and the coffee: heaven in a mug. I also enjoyed my granola parfait and the boyfriend had the best coconut chia pudding during our travel to this city (I had a spoon of it and it was super nice)<br/>Would definitely go back if I find myself in the city again!

Whilst I've only been here once I had a great experience. Coffee was well done and the cauliflower soup I ordered was also very pleasant. I will have to revisit soon to update my review to be more thoughtful and experienced.

First time visit here.. Coffee was great, food not so good. My baked eggs were completely uncooked, the waiter got our order wrong as was rude. Don't think I'll be returning in a hurry

Literally cannot fault this place! My husband and I were visiting SA and I researched for hours where to eat. Was wrapt when our Adelaide friends recommended My Kingdom for a Horse because it was high on the list! First up, the coffee. Absolutely delicious! One of the best coffees I've had...both in SA and in Melbourne! I ordered the green salad for brunch and it was absolutely divine. Flavours were incredible, it was very fresh and the perfect light meal to start the day. My husband ordered the chicken pot pie and was also really happy. Can't wait to come back!!
Helen Liv
Friendly staff, vibrant food! I highly recommend the steel cut oats and their almond milk coffees. Glad to see this cafe open up in the West of the CBD.

It was a cold and wet morning. While the SO was getting dressed, I scrolled through a couple of suggested breakfast cafes and was impressed by the feedback for My Kingdom for a Horse. Everything lovely everyone had to say about them  is well deserved! We had breakfast at My Kingdom for a Horse and took friends Sassystrawberry and Erushi for theirs too.
Eat All The Things
Delicious menu! Could come here time and time again and not be disappointed with the food. Great service, great coffee, great fit-out (love the breeze blocks & 70s vibe!). Unfortunately prices are pretty steep hence the 4/5 rating. A relatively simple French toast is $18 and a small latte $4.20. Don't go here for a cheap meal but do go here for a delicious one.
Ally Sinclair
This place is good. They are very busy but you can see why. It might have been getting off a 14hr flight, but it was so nice and relaxing. The food is tasty, the drinks are quirky, the staff are beautiful souls. Defs give it a go.

MASSIVELY deceptive in the naming department- no horses, no regal paraphernalia to speak of but other than that I had a very good time. We had an early Sunday breaky before the shrouds of people arrived, waitstaff were really attentive, friendly and great. Chose the smashed avo on toast with a poached egg. Super generous amounts of avocado on lovely thick bread, perfectly poached egg, a little bit of watercress and a cooked tomato. I usually hate cooked tomatoes but I didn't hate this- it was cooked so it was a little drier than they usually are, and had some fun herby stuff aboard. Also a lime on the side for personal squeezing was fun and added good zestiness.<br/>I had a mocha (I know that's sacrilege in terms of coffee but I needed chocolate and I needed coffee and I needed them both at once) and it was BEEAAUUTIFUL. No chocolate powder in sight. Made w real chocolate I was pleased.<br/>Nice little spot.
KnifeAndFork
Joined some friends for lunch today. I had the chicken sandwich and the boys had the brisket sandwich. All delicious and topped off with some amazing coffee!
Shirley Hii
A really nice place to have brunch & coffee but today probably it's a little busy so it took some time for us to have our meal. Everything was good & nicely presented. Love my soba noodle(bit salty but still fine) & my partner is having corned beef, both are delicious!
Nepzter
Great cafe with a variety of food options and most importantly, proper good coffee! Slightly on the pricey side, but the coffee makes up for it.
Phil Main
Lovely cafe in a part of the city that needs such a lift. You have to wait to be seated by a waitress that asks you what you want at the wait to be seated sign. We reply we are waiting to be seated. <br/>The coffee is amazing but they only have sugar. No equal. The fruit toast was nice and the accompanying jam quite home made. <br/>All in all great but I'm looking at lots of people at that wait to be seated sign. <br/>
Xun Xiao
Good Atmosphere... Food needs a bit more binding flavors to them. Separately they all taste good, but they didn't bring much surprises to me.
Liv Megan
My mum and I set out on Easter Sunday to find somewhere to have breakfast, which proved to be a hard task. After many unsuccessful calls to cafes, My Kingdom for a Horse picked up and told us that they were open. As soon as we walked in the staff and the large space was very welcoming. The cafe is decked out in groovy 70’s furniture and decor as well as being open and bright. It has a large amount of plants that sit in brightly coloured patterned pots that give it more of a lively feel. The space includes booths, large communal tables, which are great if you want to go with a large group of friends or just yourself, smaller tables and benches that run the length of the large open windows. The Menu was inviting and it was quite hard to choose a meal as they all sounded amazing but the relaxed, friendly staff were helpful when it came to the menu choices. My Kingdom for a Horse is away from all the hustle and bustle but is only about a 10 minute walk from the Adelaide Central Markets.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at my kingdom for a horse. The place was packed, always a good sign of a great restaurant. The range of seating options are fantastic, we sat outside in the sun but will be back to sit at the bench seats looking out the front window with a book in hand. Great vibe at this place and the staff were very approachable and friendly. Fantastic drinks list including prancing pony beer, one of my favs. Lots of choice on the menu and I like a place still serves breakfast at lunch time. I had the zucchini and goats cheese fritters. The fritters are tasty, done in a light batter and served with pesto, salsa and cornbread. It was a great meal but the cornbread felt out of place. Don't get me wrong the cornbread was really nice but I felt that dish would have been better with something lighter on the side similar to the corn salsa served with the potato cakes or a light salad. The dessert cabinet is also very impressive, had my eyes on the lemon curd cheesecake but will save that for another time. Looking forward to coming back for breakfast.

This place is absolutely fantastic to have breakfast, lunch and chill with friends. The place is big and the food is great. I have ordered this cold soba noodle since I want to try some thing different. I really love it. I love the seasonal vegetable with the noodles and the portion is enough for 1 person if you are not a big eater. I have tried the shakshouka as well. It is not spicy which I love the most but the egg is a bit overcooked. Overall, I would love to come back to try other dishes:)
Bambi Lam
The soba noodles is great, especially during hot weather. The shakshouka is great as well but maybe too hot to eat it. It is really recommended to have lunch here. <br/><br/>Maybe just have a cup of coffee here because the place is really confortable.
Miss L
Today I caught up with A for breakfast. We wanted to try somewhere new so we chose My Kingdom For A Horse. I had seen lots of posts on my Instagram feed about this place so I’ve been dying to try it. I love hip cafes that do creative breakfast items different from your standard bacon and eggs. The place was packed out when we arrived but we still managed to get a table immediately.
Famished
Extensive breakfast menu. <br/><br/>I went with the zucchini fritters, and my friend chose french toast. Servings were large, delicious and well presented. Venue itself is colourful and inviting, located within close proximity to the central markets. Staff were quick to greet us, and attentive throughout our stay. They do not offer split bills, but that would be the only negative.<br/><br/>Don't take my word for it - go now!

Stellar, stellar, stellar. This is one of the closest, if not better, than the trendy brunchy places you can find in Melbourne.<br/><br/>The decor is fantastic, you can tell that they have a great eye for design - the same motif translates into their menu, their branding, their furniture and even their apron! Very aesthetically pleasing. <br/><br/>The place is large enough for people to be strewn out, no queues which is always fantastic. We were served by two chicks who had a brilliant sense of humour and the best attitude. <br/><br/>We got the cold soba noodles (fantastic! Perfect for a warm day and vegetarians), the haloumi burger (comes with a lovely salad too!) and the waffles, which were just drop dead gorgeous, presentation wise and flavour wise. The hot and iced chocolates were done with noticeably high quality chocolate too, and the orange juice was freshly squeezed. <br/><br/>Overall, the prices were a bit on the expensive side, but for this quality I would happily pay and come back.
Olivia Pan
Another really nice brunch place in town. Very bright n comfortable environment, i like the bar area near the window. Food is not bad, the coffee latte art is so good, but the taste of coffee is pretty average. It's still a really nice place to have a brunch catch up with friends n family.
Billy Raditya
We had a nice RDO mid week and decided to head to this "little" cafe. It was quite spacious inside and has that hipster, retro, funky fit out. <br/><br/>Menu looked inviting with not just your normal bacon and eggs or big breakfast type of dishes. So I went with the blue swimmer crab and potato cakes, the wife had the steak sandwich and little one (who has egg and peanut allergies) had the yoghurt with mixed berries. <br/><br/>There wasn't anything bad with the meals, it just wasn't outstanding. My crab/potato cake was more potato and dill than crab. They could have added a nice piece of crab keeping it whole so that we can see and taste the crab. The wife's steak sandwich was lacking in seasoning. Yoghurt was delicious with a hint of honey with the crunch of the pistachios. The reason I believe I was more disappointed was due to the price point. $20+ for crab and potato cake only to be less than fantastic I guess makes me believe it was not worth it. But don't get me wrong, it was a nice dish. Who knows my expectations might be too high. <br/><br/>Would return to try more of the menu hoping it would improve on my previous experience.

I came here with a group of 4 and I was very excited to try it as there have been many great reviews. Despite it being busy we were seated quickly and the staff were very attentive at the start. We quickly ordered our coffees and meals. <br/><br/>The coffee came out quite promptly and they were well made, I really enjoyed mine. <br/><br/>However, our food took 55 mins to come out. I understand that they were busy but it would have been polite for them to tell us that the wait time would be about an hour. <br/><br/>The disappointment continued as my Bircher muesli (that I waited 55 minutes for) was completely bland! I thought that perhaps I was being unreasonable but I had asked a friend that was also dining there how she felt and she too agreed that they Bircher wasn't great. The stand out dish was probably the waffles. <br/><br/>I probably won't be back for a while as there are many great brunch places in Adelaide. With fairer prices, better customer service and food.
HoneyBintheCity
What a great find. It's a really bright, open, fresh and trendy place in the middle of the city. The name did leave me feeling as tho the place may have some medieval theme to it, but did not disappoint on food and service. Very nice healthy and sweet options with fresh and local produce- a little on the pricier side- but made up for it in flavour and size. Would like to return again :)
Zac Richards
Food was delicious and staff were very nice. Even kept an eraser I left on the table in case I came back for it! (Which I did). Service was a bit slow but we came at peak time.
Evan Tuttleby
Visiting from Melbourne and decided to give this place a try. Tucked away just outside the city centre the place has an awesome laid back vibe and funky set up. Coffee was great and the food was even better. The staff were also really friendly, definitely one of the nicer places for Brunch in Adelaide, would definitely be back!
Ian Rooney
Great food but can't make a decent takeaway coffee. Unfortunately My Kingdom suffers the same problem of so many cafes by not being able to provide a consistent T/A coffee experience. Yesterday perfect flat white, today same 'barista' but hopelessly week coffee. At $4.20 each, more people need to complain.

On the western side of Adelaide’s CBD, neatly tucked away on Wright Street is a specialty coffee haven, known by the name of My Kingdom for a Horse. The cafe is away from the hustle and bustle of Rundle Mall and occupies a large premises which is decked out in groovy 70s furniture and decor plus it is bright, clean and radiant inside. There is plenty of room to spread out which caters for large functions right down to the sole customer who wants to hover over a coffee and read the paper, there is enough room for everyone. The cafe is quickly becoming a front runner in Adelaide’s coffee scene, which is constantly growing.

Let me start by saying: I think it's rude and mean not to serve decaf.<br/><br/>I understand why coffee aficionados don't respect decaf or the people who drink it, but some of us have been cursed with bodies that can't tolerate caffeine. I would love nothing more than a big caffeine hit in the morning, but I would become insanely unwell. So decaf gives me a semblance of the coffee experience.<br/><br/>Gluten free bread is an insult to real bread in the same way that decaf is an insult to coffee. Yet this place and every other place bends over backwards to make sure the gluten intolerant are catered for, even though it means using bread that tastes like a dish sponge.<br/><br/>So, while I understand you will look down on me for ordering it, can you please at least cut me some slack and offer decaffeinated coffee? I'm happy to pay a surcharge. <br/><br/>That said, the food was pleasant enough. Pleasant, but not remarkable nor memorable. Under-seasoned and overpriced. <br/><br/>The service was apathetic and slow.<br/><br/>Sadly, the cakes at the counter are clearly not house-made (they're the stock standard variety you'll find at any mediocre cafe around the state) which I think is pretty unforgivable for a place that is too boutique and too refined to serve decaf.<br/><br/>The décor is trying so painfully hard to be trendy and of-the-minute but it just seems sterile and over-thought. And 2013.<br/><br/>Won't be back, soz.

They say first impressions are important. My experience with this place was rather unpleasant that I won't be rushing back any time soon. After being excited to find a park close to the place, and a number of patrons eating here--suggesting that this will be quite the place to eat--it unfortunately was all downhill from here. <br/><br/>The restaurant looks absolutely stunning. On a summer's day, the dining area becomes beautifully lit; it really does bring out the colorful walls and the varnished wooden floors of the restaurant. My coffee was served promptly and was delicious, and I expected this because I have had coffee from the barista before when he was working at the Barun, and he was partly another reason why I was excited to visit this place.<br/><br/>I have a little history with the barista that works here, he used to work at the Barun and I don't think he's responsible unfortunate experience nor I would place the blame entirely on the staff (management seems to be the problem), but it speaks quite a lot that even if he did his job well as always it wasn't enough to save this place. <br/><br/>Unfortunately, this is where all the positive things I have to say about this place end. Two tables, a group of four and a couple, came after us and were asked their food and served first. We arrived approximately five minutes before the first group and between five to ten minutes before the couple. After no indication that any staff was going to serve us, waiting and waiting and seeing others being served, seeing others receiving food, I had to approach the waiting staff. To their credit, the person that did serve us was polite and friendly and did apologise. I can only hypothesise that I had to order our food and our coffee at the same time, but that's really difficult seeing this was my first time, I need to look at the menu to see what I should order.<br/><br/>The food felt like it took a really long time to come out, longer than I've waited at most breakfast places that were busy if not more. I have had to wait long at other places, like the Barun, but seeing people getting served before us when we came before them probably is going to distort my perception of time and my mood. At this point I was reflecting on more positive experiences with other breakfast places and wondering if they were just understaffed or did they forgot about us again. Eventually My Kingdom--their version of the Big Breakfast--came out. It was cooked well, but not this-was-worth-the-thirty-minutes-plus-time-to-get-served well. I felt the eggs and bacon were not seasoned, and while some people may appreciate this, I rather have the chefs season it to show their skill. <br/><br/>The pork shoulder with pickle red cabbage and brioche bun was adequate. Nothing amazing. Not bad either.<br/><br/> I went to the markets after, and I wasn't able to eat the beautiful fresh food available because the breakfast filled me up, and naturally that's going to happen. An unfortunate consequence. The service offered by the market people was much better, and I wish I could have bought more things from the market. But the reason why I mention this is I really regret eating here and wish I went somewhere else... anywhere else.

In the creative naming department, this all-day breakfast place definitely takes the cake – the title is from a line from Shakespeare’s Richard the Third. Luckily getting a good feed doesn’t require such sacrifice. We went on a buzzing weekday afternoon and I started with a fresh orange juice. It was a generous size and very fresh – perfect! To eat, I chose the toast with avocado, roasted heirloom tomatoes, lime and sea salt, and I added a poached egg ($18.50). We did have to wait a while for our food, so I wouldn’t recommend stopping by if you’re in a hurry, but all our food was

been here several times on a weekday and MKFAH is by far one of my favourite brunch places to go to. whenever i want to bring someone to try somewhere they haven't before-- i choose here. and they end up loving it. <br/><br/>nicely situated at the west side of the cbd. easy parking. simple and bright decor yet the place bursts with invigorating energy. a good pick me up for the day! the staff are always friendly, helpful and lovely. i really appreciate places with consistent personalities and down to earth service, backed up with scrumptious food and coffee. their waffles (sans bacon and haloumi) and gin-cured ocean trout are my favourites.

Best bircher muesli in Adelaide, with almond milk 👌 <br/><br/>My friend ordered the recommended chicken sandwich and it's worth it. Tasty and good portion. <br/><br/>🎨 good decor <br/><br/>

Have eaten here twice now and I cannot fault the place. The waffles are simply divine and the coffee is superb. The second time I visited my husband and I shared the crab and potato cakes and the haloumi burger; it was a struggle to share these, we both wanted to keep eating the dish we had! The crab cakes were soft, tasty and the pomegranate and corn salsa scattered around the plate made for a perfect contrast in texture and flavour.<br/><br/>I'm already planning what I'll eat and drink upon my next visit.<br/><br/>Both times I found staff to be extremely accommodating and friendly.<br/><br/>How should I bring my baby in?: Staff will easily assist if you have a pram and do their best to find you a comfortable table. Otherwise high chairs are on offer. If you have a capsule you'll easily be able to pop that anywhere, there's plenty of space

We're definitely coming back to try many of the other items on the menu. <br/><br/>We had the pleasure of being served by 4 staff at different times and they were all cheery, approachable and helpful. One even took the time to explain their food philosophy when we asked about their house specialties. <br/><br/>My crab-potato cakes topped with a pomegranate-charred-corn-tomato salsa were delicious and filling. I tend to avoid mayo because I usually find them to be too creamy and detract from the taste of the main fare, but this one was just right. <br/><br/>My dining partner's eggs benny with generous helping of house-smoked ham hock was extremely satisfying. Eggs were good-quality and perfectly done. Well-balanced hollandaise; not heavy like many places. Toast was a teensy bit too crusty, but we're nitpicking, really.<br/><br/>This is also my favourite place for coffee and I love that they encourage people to try filtered coffee, instead of the normal stuff (I prefer filtered).

Loved my breakfast here! There is nothing better than as you're being seated, being asked if you would like a coffee, it's essential! Eggs Benedict with ham hock were fantastic, dill hollandaise was the best I've had. Coffee was superb, service excellent. Plenty of space so it's easy to get a table. My new favourite place!

One Sunday afternoon after a long, slow rise from a big Saturday night, I (Amanda) meet friends at My Kingdom for a Horse (MKH) for a recovery feast. It's a lovely sunny spring day and the light beaming through this corner cafe gives the place a warming happy vibe. It's quite a large cafe compared to all the quirky little lunch and brunch spots that have been popping up lately - great for large groups and for mum's with prams. And what's even better is that it's table service so this hangover victim doesn't have to rise from her seated coma!

December 14, 2015 By She Said What in Food & Drink Tags: Adelaide, breakfast spot, food, lazy sunday, review Leave a comment. I know I’m not the only one who thinks a weekend just isn’t a weekend without dropping 25-30 bones on a meal that is usually satisfied by a banana. The reason I know this is because last weekend I was a mere dot amongst the masses, flocking to one of the hippest breakfast joints in town, My Kingdom For A Horse.

Could have easily spent the whole day at My Kingdom for a Horse.<br/>The atmosphere is funky and fresh, staff all smiling and welcoming.<br/>Coffee is roasted in-house and it really gives Melbourne (my home town) a run for its money.<br/><br/>Had the eggs benedict: the hollandaise was super fresh and the acidity was perfectly balanced.  Coupled with not just ordinary ham, but nice chunks of smoked ham hock...yum!!<br/><br/>Was a really warm day, so I was recommended a Cold Drip coffee after my breakfast and boy was that a treat.

Nice new decor, staff are cold and unpleasant. There is no decaf coffee and it is very kid unfriendly. Menu is the usual with nothing exciting or new. Had the yoghurt, which was good but expensive for a yoghurt pot. $10. No where near as good as Troppos which is cheerful and well priced. The lemon polenta cakes were dry.  Friend had waffles that looked ok. Juice was just out of a bottle $5.

Haven't been treated so poorly at a cafe in a long time. I was polite and friendly to staff when I asked my meal be returned to the kitchen as I am allergic to nuts and, whilst quinoa is not a nut, quinoa's nutty flavour makes me very unwell. Ingredient was not listed on the menu and I was not told when I ordered a second dish that I would have to pay for both- head up to the counter to be told by the grumpy, unfriendly, unhelpful OWNER that I entered a 'contract' when I ordered and that I have to pay for both meals! 'If I put every ingredient on the menu it would go on for pages'. Well if you put one of the key ingredients on the menu we wouldn't have an issue! Out of "goodwill" they subsidized the first meal but in general, poor service, poor understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction, staff unable to smile, i felt like a hassle when I'm paying their bills. Heads up MKFAH... Adelaide is too small to get a bad rep. You're coffee and food is good, but good customer service is what keeps people coming back- which I won't be!

My Kingdom for a Horse is an open and bright cafe on Wright st. I ordered the gin cured salmon and my friends got the steak sandwich and the kingfish. We all agreed that the food was awesome with locally sourced ingredients and really great presentation for a brunch place. I've noted some reviews saying that it was on the pricey side but I felt it was probably standard for brunch places and the taste and presentation exceeded my expectations. The coffee was also great.<br/><br/>The cafe was initially quite busy but it did quiet down. The service however was really slow. Mains took a long time to come. At the end they just forgot to bring out our cake orders and so we just cancelled the order. If it wasn't for the slow service and forgetting orders I would've rated them higher. However, I thought the food was really good and I would come back for that.

A brand new place on the lovely Wright street, which is slowly but surely coming alive with the 'hip youth' who still watch VHS re-runs of MTV non-ironically.<br/><br/>Having said that, I absolutely love what is happening on this side of the city.  My Kingdom for a Horse is bright, modern and buzzing.  There are big bright open windows along the facade, which allows the wonderfully designed and bright interior to shine through.<br/><br/>Me and my partner sat at a long table and were offered coffee first, which I really enjoyed.  They came out quickly and were smooth and easy to drink - I didn't even add my normal 2 sugars!   There are options on the menu for cold drip brew which is becoming ever more popular and freshly squeeze juices.<br/><br/>Going by NH's review, I decided to try the eggs Benedict with Ham Hock.  OMG IT DID NOT LET ME DOWN!!  The hock was rich with flavour, cooked until it fell apart, moist (but not wet) and plentiful on the plate, no skimping at all!!   Along with the eggs being perfectly cooked & the hollandaise being spot on - this breakfast was filling and delicious, an absolute 10/10 for me. <br/><br/>My partner really enjoyed his also, even though his had white anchovy. Maaaaan, who does that to themselves?! But he loved it.<br/><br/>Great place.  Terrible Kingdom for a Horse though. Any horse would just mess things up in a cafe & is probably suited more for a stable.  Kingdom for delicious ham hock? Yes.

From walking in the first thing I was greeted with was a smile and a good morning. <br/>This place does just about everything right, their coffee, the food the decor is welcoming and peaceful and the ambience is homely. The major selling point is despite the volume of people, their customer service and the time spent with a bit more than chit chat makes it a refreshing experience. They do a killer soy flat white, their variations of brews of coffee make it unique and their variety of food options.

I've been here a few times, it's a perfect local spot and exactly what this end of the city needs. Despite a couple of the super friendly staff making up for the less friendly, there's something lacking here. Over all, great (and diverse) coffee menu, but still quite a pricey menu for what you get.
Laura
Bright, spacious, atmospheric and delicious! The Beiglry bagels are so good and I love that I could customise them to be served with avocado and mushrooms. The avocado was perfectly ripe and the mushrooms had so much flavour. The coffee was perfect and the staff were really friendly. There wasn't much in the way of juice, which is just a small let-down.

Easy parking, a light, modern decor with friendly staff and plenty of seating. The best thing about the place is the food which is very modern and fresh. Looking at my lunch not one bit of it came out of a deep fryer or a can, even better the coffee is roasted in house!
Zoe L
Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and dietary requirements. We shared a bagel topped with avocado and mushrooms and The sourdough toast. The famous Beigelry bagel was delicious topped with the creamy, fresh avocado. The Toast was delicious with lime, salt and roasted heirloom tomatoes. My Long Black was very smooth.

Note to self: must try eggs benedict with ham hock next time. Had one bite of someone elses and it was very yummy.<br/><br/>This place has a great ambience. Reminds me very much of my time in New York. <br/><br/>I had sardines ham scrambled eggs. Didnt look like much when first came out because of the toast, but it was utterly delicious and well balanced flavours. Only downside the toast was a bit hard/dry. Bit of butter on it made it better. But the dish shone. Looks simple but omg did it pack a punch in well balanced flavours, just how u want a good breaky to be and filling warm fuzzy feeling after eating.<br/><br/>Must try the veg and quinoa salad next time or the gooey ceasar salad.<br/><br/>Will be back. <br/><br/>
Crab Cakes
Checked this place out with some friends on the weekend. Ordered the chicken sandwich.l which was made up of delicious pieces of barbecued chicken with slight Mexican flavours on thick toasted continental bread. <br/><br/>Unfortunately there was a blackout in the area so the food took a little while; however, this was completely not their fault and the staff were fun to talk to while we waited.

What is happening in the South West corner of the city at the moment? Paddy's Lantern, Cafe Troppo, Holland Street Market and now My Kingdom for a horse.<br/><br/>Young, friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us. Excellent ... all right ... REALLY excellent coffee and the food menu looked modern, fresh and tempting.<br/><br/>We had coffee and cakes and the fig and raspberry tart I had was delicious.<br/><br/>70's decor made me feel like I was young again (where are my Emerson Lake and Palmer albums?) and the whole thing was pretty delightful. <br/><br/>Recommended!

I popped in for a quick breakfast today before work as I couldn't contain my excitement about a new cafe opening in the area. I now live in the centre of a glorious coffee and food triangle made up of Paddy's Lantern, Cafe Troppo, and My Kingdom for a Horse. Among names like Paddy's and Troppo, this new cafe has it's work cut out for it, but from first impressions it doesn't look like it's going to disappoint. My coffee this morning was delicious and really well brewed, almost perfect, as were the poached eggs on my toast. The bacon was crispy, which a lot of poeople like, but I'm not a huge fan of. And the mushrooms were nicely cooked, although chopped slightly larger than I would have preferred, but that's me being pedantic. My Kingdom for a Horse definitely wins the aesthetics battle between the 3 cafes, I was on the verge of arousal when I first walked in - I love the design of the place. It does seem more like a weekend cafe, for when you have a bit of time to sit back and relax, rather than a rushed visit before work.<br/>I look forward to visiting again in the near future to form a more informed opinion.

Heading to the kingdom with 7 peps on a Sunday and had the most wonderful experience. <br/><br/>The staff was simply exceptional, constant attention and with such enthusiastic smiles too. Our coffees were good, they offer the usual suspects, cold dips and more. Food was above average, my steak sandwich was very decently portioned and taste smashing too. But I was too keen on my partners blue swimmer crab fritters tho. <br/><br/>I'm definitely heading back for their pecan butter waffles. All in all, a fantastic new joint, very accommodating and fresh.<br/><br/>*Update<br/>Return for a 2nd round and I was kinda disappointed with our meals. The omelette with ham was tremendously salty and the waffles I have been looking forward to was... just ok. Still a lovely place to check out, just stick to the steak sandwich.

A quaint new addition to a dull area of the city - situated on one of the corners of Whitmore square. Coffee was exceptionally good and service was above average. However, what disappointed my friend and I was the eggs Benedict. The menu itself contained inspiring ingredients, it showed promise but execution was flawed. I was served over cooked poached eggs, topped with dill hollandaise, which was abysmal and lacked flavour. Chunky bits of ham, which accompanied the eggs lacked seasoning and made it difficult to completely enjoy the texture. I would definitely be back for the coffee but hopefully there will be improvement in terms of the food. All I'm saying is, there's still room for improvement.

I can’t even begin to keep track of the number of coffee stores we have in Adelaide. We’re actually very lucky because we’re spoilt for choice. A majority of the stores are located within the heart of the city where there is a lot of foot traffic, however, there are the occasional ones that are found in more quieter locations. Joining the likes of favourites in the area such as Cafe Troppo and Vietnamese Laundry, is the new My Kingdom for a Horse. Apart from roasting their own coffee beans on site, they also have an all day menu which is available until 3pm.
