Review Tongue Thai'd - Adelaide

wonderful place for dinner. Always ordering take aways, reasonable price and high quality food

The menu offers a variety of options - vegetarian included, price is reasonable, food is good. The food took a little longer than usual to be served, but we weren't in a hurry so we did not mind. The place is clean and pleasant. We were the only customers there for lunch. I'd like to try this place again sometime.

Had dinner there with my family last year, it was busy but the service was good, attentive and friendly staff. However, the food was mediocre, Thai-wanna-be cook, a little bit below average comparing to other Thai restaurants with the same price.

Absolutely love this place! Delivery is pretty quick and the prices are good. The satay chicken skewers are my favourite in Adelaide! Have dined in a few times too and the quality does not drop - the service is as great as the food is.

Atmosphere loud and annoying in front part of restaurant just wanted quiet Did dinner with my partner . Did ask to be seated elsewhere but was told it's too hot?? All seemed to hard. Food was ok have had better Thai. We left as soon as we ate as too noisy.

Group of 4 of us for Saturday evening dinner. Table was ready on time. But it took 45 minutes to get our entree after we gave our selection. Had to chase it up. Hard to get attention for service. No one came to ask if we wanted more drinks. Had to chase every time. Didn't clean up the table when we did coffee order. However the food was good.

Lovely restaurant and excellent service, waiter give us really good table for me and my husband, excellent thai food. We will try the Garden dining area next time, it looks so romantic with amazing light. We will come back soon and love this restaurant and make us feel so comfortable.

Amazing food. Best Thai in Adelaide. Service can be hit and miss - when ordering drinks, a waitress didn't know what scotch was and once your table has been served they kind of forget about you and don't ask if you need any more drinks or dessert, haha. But it's all worth it for the excellent authentic food.

The staff here are very keen to serve and provide a fantastic experience. They were able to cater for allergies without an issue across all<br/>Of their dishes. They were even able to break up the entree dishes so that we could “try” some different things! All dishes eaten were amazing. You have to try their signature dish which is the crispy eggplant. You won’t believe what they can do with this boring vegetable (actually, I think it’s technically a fruit?!). Green curry was nice and all served were full of fresh vegetables and plenty of meat. This is going to be our new regular for Thai food from now on.

We’ve been to Tongue Thai’d quite a few times and recently returned for a last minute dinner out. Service was friendly as it always is and we were seated at a cosy table in the back room. Staff were friendly and polite, food was great and very traditional flavours. We always have the eggplant special, you can’t go past it, it’s so delicious. A great place for a casual meal with family or friends.

Meal sizes are very small and container over filled with rice. Photos of dishes are very misleading compared to what you actually get when ordering take away. Food not that good for the price paid. Do not recommend people to eat here.

Some great tasting Thai, best eggplant in Adelaide! Red duck curry was sensational. Not sure about best value for money though, dishes are very saucy and quite expensive for actual content but nonetheless a place we keep coming back to for the taste.

I recently had dinner here (fri 11th nov). I think the owners should rename the restaurant (I use that term loosely, I've had better food ins food court) tongue tired. The place was dusty and dirty, cluttered and just looked tired. Complete lack of service, after being sat and breaking my neck to see the specials board, it was brought to our table where it remained for the entirety of our meal, and was still by our table when we left. It took forever to place a drink and good order. At one point I joked that I was going to ring the restaurant and order takeaway to be delivered to our table. When we eventually ordered and drinks were dumped on our table and we had to pour them ourselves. We had a shared mixed entree which was a fried assortment and a satay with a glutinous blob of satay sauce. Mains were soft shell crab, which was ok and tamarind chicken, also ok, but neither anything special, and chicken fried rice which bordered on disgusting. The bottle of wine with mains we had to ask for again even though we had asked for it to be bought with our mains, which was also just dumped on the table unopened. There was never any check on how our food was, and once we had finished eating, our table was not cleared. My dinner partner had to get up and find a service person to get the bill and from what I was told they we both playing on their phones. When we told the service person about our experience they said they were very busy (I only counted 4 tables being used and we were the last ones in the restaurant) we were given a $30 discount, but will never go back. I wish I could give a 0 out of 10

Please chef, hold back on the sugar.<br/>We really love your restaurant, great place, great service, close to home. There's a tick in every box but it's hard to find a dish that's not too sweet. The flavors are all perfect... Just too sweet!<br/>We eat Thai all the time and love it but can't keep coming to your restaurant if the food is so sweet... Please please please, hold back on the sugar

I hate to say it but the review just before me from Kate hits the nail on the head. I also had the pad Thai and it was very sweet and the noodles very rubbery. Not enjoyable at all. My friend had the signature dish of spicy eggplant and chicken mince and said the same the sauce was too sweet. I find the restaurant itself not very welcoming as well, feels dark and unkept with the peeling decals on the walls. It was also very cold inside so we had to keep our jackets the whole time. The service was good and friendly but the food was so bad I will not be back.
Kate
We were extremely disappointed at what used to be one of Adelaide s best Thai restaurants. Main issue was how over sweet the food was. The pad Thai was also rubbery. Definately not authentic Thai as their marketing suggests. We will definately not be returning.

Went here for dinner with a friend who recommended this place to try while I was in Adelaide. We were greeted cheerfully at the door and while not the most fancy place, definitely felt cosy and welcoming. <br/>We ordered 2 entrees and three mains. Food was prompt as were the drinks. <br/>I had the chicken satay entree which I thought was just a little dry, it was stuck to the skewer pretty securely but the satay was quite good. My friend raved about the eggplant special. I'm not a huge fan of eggplant but this had me eating my words. It was the prefect combination of crunchy outside and chewy inside in a rich chicken mince sauce. The pad Thai was also deliciously rich and the fish in the four spice fish was succulent and incredibly tasty. <br/>While it may not be an amazing experience, the signature flavors are definitely pronounced and done well. I'd come just for the eggplant on my next visit to Adelaide.
Rachel Sarah Coulter
Very disappointing - the chicken satay entree looked like it was beef as it was discoloured from sitting for so long and was served nearly cold. The vegetable laksa had no taste that resembled a typical laksa - it was extremely sweet and watery. The green chicken curry at least had more taste than the laksa but again was extremely sweet. The rice was bought out 5 minutes after we were served mains - again must have been left to sit as the dome was cold and dry on the outside. The signature eggplant dish although ok - was very sweet also.

We went there quite a few years ago and found many dishes overly sweet even though we like Thai food very much and completely accept their sweetness. They are too many better Thai restaurants all around Adelaide now so we may keep giving this one a miss.

Went to dinner with my partner and two friends. Chinese waitress bombarded our table with innane monologues. She was VERY LOUD, annoying and wouldn't leave us alone. She kept pointing out that I spoke "pretty good English for an Asian". I feel for her colleagues who have to put up with her annoying voice and awkward manner. Perhaps she owns the place; no one in their right mind would hire her.<br/><br/>The food is not fresh and definitely not Thai but Chinese. I am Chinese and I know my food. What we ate that night was not half decent either.<br/><br/>We played the "Guess-the-mystery-meat" game. Skewered meat was tough and dry. It had been re-heated in the microwave. Our other dishes were either covered in sweet chilli sauce or tasted like it came out of a pre-mixed sauce sachet.<br/><br/>Tongue Thaid's prices were twice that found in Chinatown but the quality of food it served was worse than really bad "student cheap eats" places that I tried when I was skint back in my uni days.<br/><br/>Do yourself a favour: avoid Tongue Thai'D.

Ahhh my fave place! This was the first restaurant I experienced in Adelaide 2 years ago and I cant help returning every few months. The signature eggplant dish is just incredible. They have the happiest smiliest staff going and the venue is very welcoming and comfortable.

Place is beautiful.on first entering you feel the warm and ambience and smell of incense.<br/>I know the food authentic as I am very familiar with Thai cuisine.the chicken satay entree was delicious but a bit too sweet for my liking but others make like it that way.the beef sir fry in basil and cashews was tasty.ingredients fresh as beans not frozen and not overly cooked.the classic pad Thai was delicious too.a tad bit expensive but the food was authentic Thai and the owners have taken great efforts to make this place warm and enticing.very friendly and genuine service.i do highly recommend it.

Absolutely delicious food! Went for dinner with girlfriends on Friday night and shared several entree and main dishes. Staff we more than happy to accommodate our GF and egg free allergies- so welcoming!<br/> Thoroughly enjoyed the deep fried tofu and spring roll entrees. The fired eggplant main was to die for, with not a scrap left on the plate at the end of the meal! Vegetarian laksa was delicious too. Will definitely dine here again soon.
Emmaface26
Stir fried ginger, Thai green curry and coconut rice. The portion size and price was favourable but coconut rice lacked in flavour, the curry was a little too spicy and the slices of ginger in the stir fry was a bit unpleasant as they were a bit much to handle. It wasn't bad but definitely have had better.

Ok, but just ordinary. Had dinner here, with 2 friends, after reading so many favourable reviews. We weren't disappointed, but it was just ordinary. Location is great, but that was my highlight. Service was good, food was average & not terribly interesting, wine-list was quite good but overpriced. Two of our mains were very sweet, including their 'signature dish' of deep-fried egg-plant (the other was from the blackboard specials: tamarind beef with noodles). Expected the tamarind to be tangy, maybe tart, so the extreme syrupy sweetness of the dish was a disappointment. Duck curry was the best dish. Entrees were very ordinary – fish cakes, deep-fried tofu and stuffed chicken wing. The flavour of the fish cakes was good, but the texture was not at all - bit like fritz. The tofu was ok, but the dipping sauces were just commercial sweet chilli sauce & soy sauce. The chicken wing came on a bed of salad, consisting of raw hunks of cabbage, raw slices of thick (ie. big) carrot, & raw sliced up green beans. We ordered rice for three, after debating rice for two, as the beef came with noodles and not infrequently at Asian restaurants serves of rice are extremely generous. Just as well – generosity was not a problem here; the 'rice for three' came out in a dessert bowl. And the noodles which came with the beef were more like a garnish than the integral component we were expecting - just sprinkled lightly and sparsely over top.<br/><br/>Maybe there aren't many Thai restaurants in this area, so the rave reviews might have been the result of lack of experience and things to compare it to. If you've never tried Thai food before, you'll think this is fantastic.

Best Thai. We booked a table for 8 of us to celebrate my birthday with my friends and family on Saturday night! It was going really well in Tongue Thai'd . Food is amazing as usual , services is great ,and the owner JOY is adorable . I will come back !

Service was good, staff were very friendly, but, but didn't like the food. Curries were way to sweet and not flavourful, and the pad Thai tasted like peanut butter....Won't go there again

Great service, lovely staff and the Eggplant Specialty is to die for

Delicious Thai food. Really enjoyed the food here. Brought back memories of Phuket. Tremendous service here and I will probably return.

Fishy. Would agree with "George", great place for people that don't know their food.<br/>Ordered "Whole Flounder" . Received what looked like it was someone else's leftover. The flesh and scales from the fish were missing, except for a bit of flesh on the side, which it was set out on plate too look like it was a flounder. When I complained, the owner told me they had knowingly given me a barramundi, but hadn't told me. Nevertheless, there was hardly any flesh from the fish. The rice noodles were 'gluggy' and one of he worst ever had in an Asian restaurant. I didn't have to pay for the fish(as if I was), but I shouldn't have had to pay anything.<br/>Great place when you got no idea!

Love it. This place is one of the best thai resaraunts ive been in.. we will be back soon !!

Every time I drove past this place, it was always busy. Decided to try it. Great for people who have no idea about food and wouldn't know any better. I have eaten in many restaurants and have 4 years experience in hospitality. Worst Thai food ever. Service was about the same. Overall would be up there with top 5 worst dining experiences.
Stella
I make better Thai dishes at home! Sauces were too overpowering or bland and the pad Thai, usually my favourite dish, was the worst I'd ever had. Not wasting my money there again!

Good services, I was recommended by a staff trying Mix entries and yum pork bone, also choochee Baramundi and Duch salad for main !All are really beadutiful taste. Food is great also Services is wonderful, I could feel they care about us when my wife say I like hot ,and good to hear that, this restaurant does everything in fresh cook, I feel a little spoil. I will come back and introdu've to my friends.

The worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We waited 1.5 hours for a main meal before asking the waitress how long out meal would be, having watched numerous tables come and go after arriving and ordering 20 minutes after us. The place was half empty. After being told it would be another 5 minutes, it took 10 minutes for the first meal to come and the second 15 minutes after. Then the meals were the same but looked and tasted totally different, one delicious, the other terrible. After visiting once before we will not be returning again

Really poor service. We were really disappointed to have to wait for an hour for 2 stirfry's and a curry takeaway. The lady who then served us very rudely informed us that the food had been sitting there for 10 minutes and it was our own fault for not knowing this... She then didn't apologize and said that next time she would just inform us to wait longer to avoid disappointment. We had 2 other couple at the counter waiting for vegetarian meals who waited longer then us. The red curry and the chilli coconut chicken then ended up being exactly the same, it tasted great but it was just such a let down to have such bad service.
Laura
Terrible name, not terrible food. The eggplant special is amazing - worth getting to share as it's pretty heavy!<br/><br/>There are definitely better Thai places in Adelaide, because Adelaide ha some amazing hidden gems, but Tongue Thai'D is still pretty good and the décor is lovely.
Amanda
The food was DELICIOUS!! Exceeded all expectations!! We had the cho-chee flounder, chicken laksa and the signature eggplant dish. All was very very tasty! We are in the garden which has a great atmosphere and vibe! Great service and great experience!

Service was appalling. Waited over an hour for entree. Our 2 entrees came out 20 minutes apart. Half of the restaurants lights and aircon went out and when we asked to move to the air conditioned area 1 waitress told us no. Lucky another waitress was more obliging. Terrible experience and we understand it was hard with the semi loss of power but the rude and unhelpful attitude of 2 staff in particular has left us not wanting to return.

Meals took FOREVER to arrive! We were running late to our theatre show bcos of slow service. Food was horrible. We were given free soft drink for the bad experience?! Soft drink... Really?! Wow! Never again!

Fantastic food and staff. Very reasonably priced too, but the service is a little on the slow side. However if you wanted fast service go to Ying chows. <br/><br/>Visit this joint, order a bottle and enjoy some of the best thai food going around.
Whine N Diner
Had dinner here on a Wednesday night. First impression of the decor was that it was kinda cliche. Nevermind, we were here for the food anyway as we've heard so many good things about this restaurant. Ordered a red curry and their specialty eggplant dish. Were disappointed as both dishes weren't as tasty as we had expected. In fact, the red curry tasted like those ready-made meal kit ones. The house specialty eggplant dish was more disappointing, it was deep fried and we felt that as a result the texture was compromised and didn't do the dish justice. Overall, didn't enjoy the experience and won't be back.
Only If Its Good
Brilliant as Usual. With the change of ownership there is always trepidation so a week before our booking I decided to pop in to have a look to see if there were any changes. Nope all the same. Chef the same, alot of the staff the same, ambience the same, quirkiness the same and my most fave the tortes and coffees the same. Aaaaaaah, relief. <br/><br/>Fast forward a week later. We weren't disappointed when we received our meals either. We decided to order entrees as we are aware that the main takes some time to come out. Let me warn or rather advise everyone, everything is made fresh to order so it will take longer than usual for your food to come out. I would rather wait because I like to taste the freshness in my meal. I ordered chicken satay and it was done with Tongue Thai'd flair, delicious generous serves of chicken on the skewers and they are full of flavour unlike some places where they are dried up bits of chicken on a skewer drizzled with satay sauce. These satays were loved and you could taste it as you were eating. I decided not to order the whole crispy fried flounder in red kaffir lime sauce, like I usually do. I ordered soft shell crab instead and I was not disappointed. I had never had soft shell crab before and I did ask our waitress how to eat it when the order was placed. FYI, you eat everything in the bowl put in front of you. Yes, you eat the shell and yes there is an initial, "OMG I'm eating crab shell, should I be doing this?" at first bite but that feeling soon disapates when the flavours start zinging around your mouth. I looked around the table and all I could hear was, "Yum this tastes absolutely fantastic." and "Oh wow.", all the while eye balls were rolling to the back of the head "Homer Simpson" style. We were so caught up in our meals that we didnt notice the waitress or anyone else in there for that matter. As I paid the bill I spied the tortes so I had to get a cheeky piece of the white chocolate and lemon curd cheesecake to take home. Yes this was enjoyed by myself and my husband once we had room in our bellies. I still reccommend this place to people but you can't please everybody, no matter how good you are.

Disappointed. I wish I could say this was great - we went a few years ago and it was lovely. When we went recently the food was very average although the serves were generous and the staff were nice. It was incredibly off-putting that the people next to us found a nail in their food - in the same curry dish we had - yuck! I know accidents can and do happen but combined with the uninspiring food we won't be back.

Slightly dissapointed. We had heard some great things, but the food was a bit disappointing. Oh well, we might try again one day.

Small bowls always mean you consume much more, but it’s so worth it at Tongue Thai’d.. I had been itching to try this place after a recommendation from my foodie mother. Upon entering this red retro decorated establishment, albeit a little kitsch but, hey, I like kitsch! We were seated with enough space away from other diners to have our own conversation. The warm red walls and soft lighting makes everyone look attractive. Good start I say!<br/><br/>The quick service was much appreciated for our hungry bellies. The waiter explained the specials, with a few traditional Thai dishes, however I didn’t try the chicken bums (yes, bums!)... maybe next time. The signature dish is the crispy fried Eggplant. Well worth it, not sure of calorie intake, if it tastes this good, you don’t ask!! In comparison to the other reviewers I enjoyed the caramel sweetness, without it being too much. We also ordered a variety of dishes (red duck curry, four flavour fish, chilli & basil vegetables, and pad thai) to mix up the flavours.<br/><br/>Dessert was offered, a selection of Italian based cheesecake and tortes, jokingly offered as “not Thai”. We were told they are “100% fat free” by the waiter with his convincing smile that is reminisce of the local racketeers on the streets of Thailand. His smile almost had me, but the digestion of the mains was still occurring. <br/><br/>Worked out at $25/head including a few beers, overall a thoroughly enjoyed meal and I will venture back again.

An Adelaide constant!. Always good.<br/><br/>Recent change of ownership always a bit nerve racking, but all is good.<br/><br/>Great food, great service, keep it up<br/><br/>10/10 venue

What a fantastic place! Have driven past this little gem for years and always had it on the To Do list! Finally we went tonight and weren't sorry! <br/><br/>Beautiful service and food with wonderful decor! <br/><br/>Well worth a try and highly recommend the eggplant special!
Happy Little Diner
Disappointing. I'd heard good things about Tongue Thai'd years ago and had always meant to try it, but only recently got around to it. Very disappointing - beer was warm and when we pointed this out, was replaced with more warm beer. Furthermore, the waitress was not at all surprised when we sent the first round back and said the second round should be better, having been on ice, so they are clearly aware there's a problem.<br/><br/>Food was ok - fish cakes nice enough but didn't come with any dipping sauce. Beef salad was nice, prawns with basil sauce had a strange flavour and were disappointing. Won't be going back unfortunately.
Mia
Dun Dunn. SUCH A SHAME!. It is such a shame that the owners have left this quaint little place. Used to be my favourite thai eat out EVER. But without Mat and Pichai, it is just not the same. Pichai's unbelievable cooking and Mat's opera. We used to feel as if we were going to a second home, a true piece of magic. <br/><br/>Alas, i doubt there will be any more cabaret, and although the food is apparently the 'same' i highly doubt any more tantilising specials will be added. I mean, Mat could sell me chicken bums!! <br/><br/>I wish them all the best.. but i just don't see it being the same anymore. COME BACK MAT AND PICHAI!!
Phil
Very Poor. On Wednesday night we were part of a large group booking. On arrival it took a long time to be asked about drinks, and when my beer finally arrived (no glass see previous post) It was warm. Asking around the table all other drinks were not cold, including sparkling Shiraz which really should be nicely chilled. On complaining I think they realized they had a cooling problem and put beers in their freezer. Some 40 minutes later i got my first cold beer and the ladies ended up having to put ice in their wine. Entree's part of our banquet including spring rolls had no sauce to accompany . One of our group never received what she ordered and when she asked about it she was told they had run out of that! Rice came out late., and really most of the food was not really up to par with other Thai restaurants we have eaten at. Sorry but want be rushing back.

Went here for my birthday last night. Loved it, great service :)

I've both eaten in and had take out from tongue thai'd and overall, its been a very mixed experience. When dining in, we were warmly greeted, but clumsily led around the back to a room with 3 tables, none of which were yet occupied. We were then audience to a recital of the specials menu. Apparently because the specials board was around the corner we were presented with this fake, simply try hard presentation. It felt extremely awkward. I would have preferred just to peak around the corner. 15 minutes later, we had not even been offered to order drinks, until we caught the attention of a waiter. They then proceeded to serve our 3 beers without glasses to pour them into. Now, if this was at a mates place for a bbq, no worries, but when you're paying for service, I at least expect glasses with beer. So out comes a 15 year old male waiter with 2 glasses (for 3 beers), gingerly places them on the table and shyly states that's all they have.... Right... A restaurant with no glasses to drink out of. Do they expect you to pass around a bottle of wine and each take sips from it? At least the 2 glasses they did bring were chilled!<br/><br/>The wait for entrees was average. Same for the mains. Well, one of them. 1 meat dish came out before the rest and was placed right under the nose of the only vegetarian at the table,. A sharp "Ummm that's not my order" surprised the waitress who had't confirmed whose dish it was. She quickly retracted. Turns out it wasn't any of ours... The mains came out scattered over the next 5 minutes. From different waiters... Very gingerly indeed. I wonder if these guys have even been shown how to properly carry and serve a plate of food?<br/><br/>This place has so much potential. The food is generally quite good, but its staff really do let it down. I'll have to try them again one day. As much as I really do hope it was just a one off experience, the general vibe of the place seems pretty hit or miss and screams inconsistency (and in the case of the waiters, incompetence).

Had a lovely meal late Friday night! The signature eggplant dish is divine. I can't stop thinking about it! Restaurant has a great vibe, beautiful food, and good service. Will definitely be back.

Busy busy. The chilli cononut veggies are unbelievable, pad thai delicious too. We ordered another curry too but were given two chilli coconut veggies accidentally, although I wasn't complaining because it was so good. We had it to take-away so can't comment too much on the service, but staff seemed stressed and run off their feet, think they might need another pair of hands....Decor inside kooky and interesting

OMG! WOW!. This place is fab! The decor is superb and it is so cosy. The food was absolutely delicious, this is thai food!! The service was unbelievable, the staff were so friendly from the time we walked in the door. we had a very large table, and nothing was too much trouble, and it was a Saturday night and the place was packed. They make a mean cocktail too ;)<br/>Hooray for good food in the burbs! Can't wait to go back.

Ok food poor service. Food here first time was really really nice second visit one week later. Food was ok. The service here leaves a lot to be disired .The table staff do not listen to you ,they rush you and all in all the vibe is that they don,t care if you eat there or not. We won't return
Kim
Great food. My duck red curry was beautiful, and the eggplant was divine. The service was dreadful. Some mains were coming out at the same time as entrees. My drink didn't arrive till halfway through entrees. They completely forgot to bring out my rice. That would have been okay if they didn't have the audacity to try and charge me for it! Such a shame because the food is so good, but I'm just not willing to go back because the service was so bad.

The red light district. This was my first visit to the red light district otherwise known as Tongue Thai’D… you’ll know what I mean when you see it. I must say I was pleasantly surprised, it is a place I drive past a lot and have always wanted to stop in. As we were seated we were given the run down on the specials and informed that since it was our first visit we would receive a free entrée, an eggplant dish of some sort, I must admit at this point I wasn’t too sure about the place. The staff had become very friendly, almost over friendly, in fact one of them was smiling so much that it seemed this was about to happen<br/>http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--iMJxYsRhSw/TeRJ2IFUqLI/AAAAAAAAAH0/8L5eRnNjEeM/s1600/doctor-who-prisoner-zero1.jpg<br/> <br/>As we waited for our food, which had been prepared gluten free due to my fellow diner’s dietary requirements… although I’m still unsure why mine needed to be prepared as such too. I was most amused to see my next-door neighbor walk in and be seated quite close… just can’t get away from these damn people. At about this time our entrée arrived… I have never tasted eggplant like this, my god it was good.<br/> <br/>Now the point of this dinner was me and my fellow diner catching to have a serious conversation about a few personal matters… I cannot begin to tell you how inadequate Tongue Thai’D is as a venue for such an event, the owners should be ashamed, it’s as if they expected people to come here for a nice meal and a few drinks.<br/> <br/>All in all the food was fantastic the service good… if a little creepy at times and the atmosphere lovely, will go the again sometime.
I Eat Adelaide
Very disappointing. Orders m.... Very disappointing. We were informed that because we were a large table we should have the banquet because "we are very busy tonight" - yes they were busy but we were one of the reasons they were busy. We were not told on booking that we would have to have the banquet and we informed the waiter that we preferred to order from the a la carte menu. Our orders were subsequently messed up and some people on our table had finished their mains before the other mains arrived due to an order being taken down incorrectly. The male waiter came back to argue the point and inform us that the order was indeed taken down correctly so I guess he was trying to shift the blame - totally unnecessary, just fix it the problem. The rice had been brought out quite a while before the mains arrived and had gone cold by the time I had got half way through my curry. My red duck curry was bland and lacked intensity although the duck was tender and there were quite generous proportions of breast. I did not finish it as I had had coconut milk overload. Many of our group left a lot of their mains and we all agreed that the food was below par. We were not offerred a dessert menu and many of our group left at that point. For me, it is certainly not in the same league as gems like Surees kitchen where the dishes are beautifully crafted and the service attentive and friendly.I must say that the female waiter that served us was absolutely lovely but unfortunately, the other staff seem to have far too much attitude. It was certainly not as good as my previous visit.

Overrated. We rocked up after great excitement to a restaurant we'd heard so much about at 5:50pm to open the door and its locked and the sign says closed...we had a booking for 6pm and the restaurant opens at 5:30pm...<br/><br/>This would be fine apart from the staff were all behind the counter laughing and joking with each other. At least 3 of them had seen us try to open the door including the manager but none had come to open it...after 5 minutes of being left out in the cold the manager came over and opened the door and simply said "sorry i forgot to unlock the door"<br/><br/>The initial drink service was as one would expect until it came to order the entrees..."most people order entrees so that they may have a buffer to decide what they would like to order as a main" says the waitress in a patronising voice, I said to my partner "We must look like we've never been out to a restaurant before"...there were 9 of us celebrating my elderly relatives birthday I'm sure we've been to enough restaurants in our lifetimes that at least one of us would have learnt the proccess of ordering food...<br/><br/>Then the entrees arrived in drips and drabs until all were eaten...average at best<br/><br/>Then the main courses arrived spanning a 15 minute window leaving many waiting to eat...the waiting staff having no knowledge of the food they were serving "stir fried bean sprouts" as opposed to pad thai...i was surprised the steamed rice wasn't called rice in a bowl...<br/><br/>The food was dissapointing...the flavours overpowering and unbalanced...<br/><br/>Not once were we offered another round of drinks and when we stood up to leave one of the staff had the ingenious idea to bring over a fresh bottle of complimentary water<br/><br/>It was a learning experience at best...

Generally good, but.... Well, I like Tongue Thai'd. Specifically, I like their Pad Thai (one of the best in Adelaide) and the service and atmosphere. However, a lot of their other stuff on the menu is quite forgettable. But, maybe it's more tuned for different taste buds than mine. I'd still recommend going at least once, and definitely go the Pad Thai.

Service surprisingly good. Cakeage too much so birthday cake left for home treat. Squid salad to die for!

Nice but not fab. My husband I I went there as we are Thai food foodies & after hearing the squark over the food here we gave it a go. The service was great but 3 waiters & the owner kept coming over to us several times which was annoying, so much so i had to tell them to back off! They also kept dimming the light every time they left the room, which i ended up turning up as we couldn't see our food! <br/>The food was good, as was the eggplant dish & the red duck curry with lychees however NOT as good as Tanapa Thai's crispy eggplant or red duck curry with lychees food in Glenelg. Would I go back again though? Yep, probably.

Great food, lousy service! When you are given some service, it's really good, but it doesn't happen enough! We had to wait about an hour for our meals, there were only two of us and the restaurant wasn't that busy. I wouldn't go back based on the service which is disappointing as the food is good!

Bad service. Was there few weeks ago for a bday dinner and sorry to say, had a worst service ever:<br/>we ordered our meals just after 7pm and at 9 pm there was still two more people at the table that didn't get their meal! Some of us were getting wrong dishes; my brother in law ordered two but got just one and after inquiring about it was told by a water: " o, ok , we can pack that other dish for you and you can eat it tomorrow for breakfast or something'( !!!!????) They only served us drinks at the beginning when we came and that was it : we kept asking about our meals and were told that they are busy and that they have quite few banquets on etc:<br/>and this as we watched table next to us being fully serviced, reset and then served again for different people.<br/>And food was ok but nothing I will remember...

Nice food, terrilbe service. The food nice but not to the same level of freshness and quality as Parade Thai at Norwood.<br/><br/>I was very let down by the service and lack of ownership by the staff. It took at least 20 minutes for someone to take our drink orders. Then they forgot my wifes main course and it was her Birthday dinner. By the time that the main was delivered, we had nearly finished our meals and my wife had lost her appetite. We told the staff that we don't want the main anymore due to the delay. They did offer us to take the meal home with no charge but highlighted because it was only going to be thrown away and no apology was provided.<br/><br/>Overall, the food was nice but not great. I won't be returning due to our bad experience with the service.

Best Thai in Adelaide. I can scarcely believe the bad reviews of this amazing restaurant. This place has everything: exciting, delicious food, great staff, terrific atmosphere, good wine list.... I have been 20+ times here & taken many friends along with me. I don't even like eggplant but their signature dish is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I especially love the red duck with lychees as well. I've had just about everything on the menu & never been disappointed. I recommend when in a group you order a bit of everything & share & when there's nothing left you'll all be licking the bowls at the end!

A Bit Disappointing. I dined there with a group of friends and was really looking forward to showing this place off to my friends who had never been there. It definately has a nice pleasant ambience and the service was good. However the big let down was the actual meat in the curry. We had Masaman and Penang Curry to share and I have never had the worst experience with Tough meat in a curry, In both dishes. Very disappointing, as the meat is usually very tender in these curries from my experience from other Thai places. A big let down!!!! I don't understand how a restaurant can serve up this dish like this.... The sauce however was very good. What a shame, otherwise the night was enjoyable.

Busy and understaffed, but good food!. This was our first time to this restaurant.<br/>The restaurant decorations are bright and interesting, and it seemed like a great choice.<br/><br/>We had booked, but we waited inside the door for about 5 minutes before being assisted to our table, and even then the waiter had to go looking for a table.<br/><br/>They were very busy, and appeared understaffed, however we were not advised that there would be a wait.<br/><br/>We were seated in a little room at the back where we waited 20 minutes without so much as a drinks menu. My partner had to get up and ask for menus. After 45 minutes someone finally came to take our order.<br/>There were two other tables that were seated in the room with us and had ordered before we got there - but they did not receive their meals until after we ordered, so they must have waited for at least 45 minutes.<br/>The kitchen lost the docket of the table next to us, so they only received one of their meals.<br/><br/>This all said, once the food came out (Larb Chicken, Pad Thai noodles and their eggplant signature dish) it was very tasty and we really enjoyed our meal. The Larb Chicken was especially good!<br/><br/>The staff were very friendly, especially nice to see considering they were so overworked.

Room for improvement. Been to TT about 6 times now, always wanting to support local restaurants in my area. Ambience is good, food is good, service can be good but is inconsistent. On 4 of the 6 occasions, there's been issues: 1) no service for 20 minutes 2) rice not coming out till 10 minutes after mains, 3) wine not being delivered to table 4) having to go to counter to get service, plus more. I suggest to people visiting this restaurant to sit in the main front area where you won't get forgotten.

Fabulous fine night. We ate last night with another couple. Had the banquet which was entrees and a selection of four mains and rice as well as drink to start. We then had two bottles of rose and waited for their show to start. Mat was dressed in drag and paraded around for the evening mingling with the tables and was then MC for the Chillies on the Side show which was amazing. Three woman entertained us in very intimate surrounds. Their voices and interaction were fabulous. By 11pm they had the entire restaurant with all chairs pushed back and dancing. What a great night!

Getting tired?. Have eaten at Tongue Thaid many times. The food has always been ok. Tonight we were really dissapointed with bland unexiting food. Come on guys !

Over rated. The food and ambiance at dinner was good but overpriced compared to other Thai places.<br/>If you adore Thai and loads of sweet coconut milk then this is the place for you - not me.<br/>Check your bill, were overcharged several items. Some staff were professional others were not.<br/>Nice atmo but very noisy. Overall, I wont go back again unless I'm with people who love repetitive flavors.

Rubbish. Boring. Over-rated and completely disappointing...

Only one dish on the menu. The only reason that i go back to this restaurant is for the Eggplant and Minced Chicken special. That dish is out of this world and worth the trip. Unfortunately, the rest of the menu is more than average. I've had a few of the curries and they taste so similar.<br/>The atmosphere is great, service lovely and its licensed which helps the overall feeling of the place.<br/>So, a serve of the Eggplant a bottle of wine and i really enjoy heading here for a quick eat.

Great Food Great Service. What a pleasant change, will be back and bringing more friends with me.
Casual SA Diner
Took about a month to get a booking. Literally laughed at me when I enquired about a booking for valentines day. Finally got a table. Small and cramped and the waiter wouldn't leave us alone to eat. Food was ok, Thai is good but nothing blew me away.

Book ahead and get ready for a great night! Order the eggplant and chicken dish, and relax in the knowledge that all the food is fabulous. A little gem!

Amazing -we keep going back for this authentic Thai food. Cheap corkage and great service, one of the best kept secrets in the Wester suburbs!
Tom
Amazing Thai. A fantastic meal with equally great service. The blonde girl and who looked to be the manager interacted in a fun and energetic way which added to the already vibrant atmosphere.<br/><br/>I can recommend the eggplant & chicken dish - their signature - and their wine list is more than what you'd expect at any Asian style restaurant.<br/><br/>This is a secret I'm glad I heard about and will certainly tell all of my friends.<br/><br/>Thanks guys!

Located on the outer skirts of the city, Tongue Thai’d is a breathe of fresh air in what is a dreary part of Henley Beach Road. With a maze of indoor and outdoor seating areas which seats about 150, this place is tastefully decorated.
Tempting Palates
From our visit to Tongue Thai’d, 54 Henley Beach Road, Mile End there was one common theme - “the Eggplant was the standout dish!”.  The crispy coating of the eggplant with the rich toffee sauce just melted in our mouths. We decided to go with the Banquet to let the chef choose for us.

T is for Tongue Thai’d – an tasty pun! Located in the western suburbs, we spied this whilst trying to eat at the dessert place next door but it was closed. It is pretty hard ti miss the red coloured lighting flowing through the whole restaurant. Since we were feeling hungry, we popped in for a quick meal! The waiters were friendly and straightaway had water for us as we perused the menu.  Unable to decide, we concocted our own creation of ordering a green curry but with duck, as well as a traditional pad thai. (We judge a place based on its basic green curry and their pad thai!) After about 10-15 minutes, just when we were starting to feel more hungry, the food appeared! The chicken pad thai, reasonably priced around $13-14,was flavour-some and had lots of chicken throughout. It’s not a particularly saucy pad thai, like some other Thai places serve, but a nice consistency – not too dry not too wet. Our duck green curry, which set us back a fair bit around $24-25, but was immensely delic

Although the food was presented nicely and ambience was great, they did not deliver food in a timely fashion. Overall, the food was very sweet, too much sugar was put into their food for my taste.

There’s plenty of food and, once you do get the bill, it is reasonably priced. Just be aware that you will need to book, the restaurant can be a bit cramped and noisy and the service … well, it’s casual. But once you have some crispy aubergine you probably won’t care.
