Review Kopi Tim - Adelaide

Benjie Abonita
A wonderful place, clean and has fast service. Serving portions are enough and the taste is great! With the Laksa, the Malaysian version has a subtle taste compared to the Singaporean that I'm used to. Generally, I highly recommend this place.

Their lunch board specials enticed us yesterday at $10.90 for your traditional Malaysian dishes. It was super delicious, tasty and flavourful. Definitely have added this to the cheap eats list, service was decent and food came out hot and fast! I would recommend this place if you are looking for cheap tasty Malaysian! 📸 : @deelycious_

Your experience will vary depending on what you get. The first few times I went there and got the Hainanese Chicken Rice, the vegetables were clearly not fresh and the quality was low - 5/10. The fish curry, however, is quite good - 8/10. A 6/10 experience. You get what you pay for.

I can’t get past how good the lunch time specials here are. Consistently good roti curry, flavourful Hainan chicken and satisfying Nasi Goreng. Very fair prices and very decent serves. One of my regular haunts

Sweet price and good foods. Curry is a bit spicy, but taste great. :-)

Reasonably priced good lunch menu. Ate 2 items as I was very hungry after a 13km hike.

Talk about a time warp as the venue has not been updated since the early 90s but I think it’s a good thing as it adds to the comfort abs authenticity of the restaurant. It was my first time to Kopi and the friendly service made recommendations which were delicious. I love Malaysian and the food here was as good as what you get in Malaysia- yum!

It's been forever since we've been back at Kopi Tim. Definitely have missed having Malaysian food! Overall pretty good! . Chicken satay: meat was tasty and super tender, but could have been a little bit more charcoaled. Still very good. . Lao shu fen: nicely done with tasty seafood and noodles. . Nestum prawns: love love LOVE this dish!! It's soooo good! The prawns were perfect 😍😃🤤. . Belacan kangkong: good belacan flavours with a mild amount of spiciness.

This is an excellent place for takeaway during the current restrictions. Highly recommended

Love the chicken rice here, make sure you get the breast option unless you like eating your way through bones. First time I got the thigh and for that reason I enjoyed it less. I come here for the chicken rice but the other dishes are just as delicious. Lunch menus great value and have been here for dinner. Service is OK hence the 4 stars, but foods good enough to keep going back.

Enjoyed lunch special on a Sunday for $10.50ea. Been to Malaysia few times and tried different authentic food and here is my honest review about this place;

Ambience: feels old and dusty. Old style furniture with super flat old cushion on wooden chair.

Nasi Lemak : 3.5/5. Rendang meat was great, super soft and mild spicy level, but maybe a bit too much coconut grates (for me). Condiments were great. Somehow the coconut rice has brown looking rice mixed in it. Not sure if it's their style or it's burnt rice but it immediately decreased my appetite. I've had amazing coconut rice but this one was 2/5 :( but for 10bucks, you don't really complain.

Laksa: 3.5/5. Broth was pretty authentic, can be stronger in shrimp paste. Came with one big prawn and lots of tahu (spongy style tofu). Not spicy.

Teh tarik : 4.5/5. It's not too sweet, not too acidic. Amazing. Would definitely come back for this.

And perhaps try other lunch special dishes.

The young man who took our order was good at his job. The lady who served the food seemed to be unhappy with her job. Just imagine if the plate of food flipped as it was only partially rested on the dining table when served. It was mentioned as authentic Malaysian food but as Malaysian, it is safe to say it is very, I mean very very far from that. On brighter note, the roti canai was quite good but the curry was rather diluted though the taste was still there.

Can't complain with $9.90 lunch specials.

Combo Laksa was great, but wish I got the Beef Nasi Lemak my work mates got. That looks sensational.

We will be back.
Joanne
Food used to be so much better.
Partner and I had come here 6 months ago, and had ordered our usual curry fish head. However, this time, the curry was very diluted and the fish was not cooked through. We asked the waitress about it, and was told that the 'red' part of the fish was normal.
Today, we decided to give it another try. The curry was still very diluted as compared to what we had in the past. It wasn't spicy and didn't had the distinctive "curry taste". Service was slow, and we were not given another serve of rice because "the rice was still cooking". Very disappointed with Kopitim.

Mum and son out for a spot of lunch! We were heading for Japanese but changed our mind and sidled into Kopi Tim to try out the lunch menu. Service friendly enough. Venue, just simple.

We ordered some lunch specials, consisting of spring rolls, Hainanese chicken and Nasi Lemak.

Spring rolls, terrible, straight out of the box and mushy filling. Hainanese chicken very moist but had no broth and no bok choy! You can’t have Hainanese without the bok! Nasi Lemak with beef was really good.

Pretty simple food, might return to try some more dishes, but I did notice the special board meal prices were not cheap!

This place is good, their chicken curry on nasi lemak is great, the sambal however is on the sour side. Their hainanese chicken rice is good..tried their claypot chicken rice, its too salty for me. Their ayam kadazan is not bad.

Kopi Tim is a little hidden gem on the outskirts of Chinatown. If you're looking for a authentic, family run Malaysian restaurant then look no further. I ordered the Chicken Laksa and my date ordered the Hainanense Chicken Rice. We were both happy with our food! Some feedback if the owners read this, some music in the back room would be nice (eerily quiet) and a slight clean on the walls (especially ones with the table adjacent to it!) Will be back to explore more of the menu :)

Some of the dishes there r quite average, n others r very nice, like the spicy prawn n fired chicken. The environment kinda rank the place down a little tho.

I've been several times and every dish I've had has been delicious. Their chicken laksa is amazing where the poached chicken is ALWAYS moist. Hainanese chicken rice is also good and the servings of beef rendang are huge! Since becoming a vegetarian I am excited to go back and try the vegetarian laksa and eggplant dishes.

Flavoursome, authentic, delicious! The cheap lunch menu is probably underpriced! I think the decor is inviting and warm creating a very relaxed atmosphere. The staff are always friendly and food oh so tasty! I love to order the chicken or beef curry and a second deliciously crispy roti to mop up the spicy sauce :)

That owner is a horrible human being, the food was crap and try to complain but she said "no we dont do refund", i was like what the hell? The laksa is pale colour, i cant taste any laksa suppose to taste. The service was the worst, they talk about me and my friend at the back of kitchen.

Friday night let down !. Very disappointing. Could not order Hainanese chicken rice or chicken laksa as they had run out of chicken ! This was 7pm on a Friday night! I ordered the Nasi Lemak and checked I could have the chicken instead of beef. This arrived with 2 very small bony knuckles of chicken. I have a small appetite but this was ridiculous. My daughter ordered the seafood laksa ( as no chicken ) and my husband ordered Mee Goreng which although he said was okay there was no chicken!
Pure_evil
Great malaysian makan, even better hospitality!. Heard that kopi tim had changed hands. Went back to have a try. great food!! And definitely way better service!! Will be back!!

I was really disappointed, the laksa came out after 15minutes in a quiet weekday. Laksa was tasteless and the prawn tasted unfresh.
Jeanie5678
Laksa review. Went in for a late night craving of laksa. Wasn't the best one I have had but wasn't too bad either, was very full of egg plant which was way over cooked and not a very nice texture. The noodles, both rice and egg were to die for along with the tofu as I just had the vego option. For a vego laksa I expected there to be more greens like bok choy, etc but only had green beans and egg plant. Was a huge serving so if you are hungry it's a good price at $13.90.
Popcorntkj
Good, but not great. Went in for chicken rice which was tasty, however, the service was a bit disappointing. The guest i was dining with had just finished their meal, and a waiter came over as soon as he put his fork down, mind you i was still eating my food. A bit too keen to clear the table i think. Roti Cannai, was delicious. Decor needs to be updated, and my table was dusty.
Whine N Diner
This place doesn't have much of an ambience as the decor was a mismatch & very dated. The service was nothing special. The mee goreng that I ordered was nothing special. I tried my sister's laksa & it was quite bland & didn't taste like the laksa I'm used to in Singapore. It's unlikely that I would be back.

The hainanese chicken rice, curry fish and the nasi lemak are to die for. New chef and new boss, likey their new menu- mamak style fried noodle! The customer service is way better than previous owner!
Micheal
If you are looking for authentic malaysian food, this is the place! Tried a few dishes. They are delicious. Especially the curry fish head, rendang and the hainanese chicken rice! Delicious food and great service!
Cchang
I believe the owners have changed hence the chef too. The food no longer tastes the same
Matt
I love the lao shu fen (rat's tail noodles) in a clay pot, with tender chicken, juicy prawns and slightly crunchy on the bottom. Chicken rice is also good, especially the chili sauce. Big serves and reasonably priced. The decor is a conversation piece.

Haha I like it

Hospitility. I can see what people mean by the service here - it certainly manages to rival BBQ City for both animosity and apathy. I attempted to call this place twice to confirm if they were open for lunch on a Wednesday but go no answer either time, even though they were indeed open. When I got there, I couldn't help but notice the derelict interior. Sitting down with my friend, I got a laugh when the infamous lady manager came over to us, unceremoniously dumped the menus on the table and asked us if we were ready to order before we'd even had a chance to even lift the cover. This is almost comedic! So given all this, how is it that the place is still so busy? The food must be good right? Well it's *okay*. I had the lunch special Nasi Lemak which was filling and cheap, but certainly not something I'd be dying to come back for. I will try the touted fish head curry next time, but I'm almost more keen to experience the kitchen dramas than the food. Might bring a Caucasian friend and ask for tap water!
Venu
Tasty. I had mee goreng at this restaurant yesterday. It could be slightly hotter but overall it was authentic as you would find it in Malaysia. But the serving was huge - enough for two. The decor of the place is poor and the front section a bit cramped. Don't forget it's closed on Tuesdays

Amoungst the best Malaysian food in Adelaide. Delicious and authentic food. The nasi lemak is delicious and so is the roti bread.. The setting may not be upmarket but if good Malaysian food is what you are after at a reasonable price then kopi Tim is where you will find it... If your after a fancy setting go to Singapore house or concubine where you will also pay 3 times the price.
Elvira
A rip off. Be careful when you dine at this joint as they do try to cheat your money. Apart from charging $$ for take away conatiners, credit card surcharge and tap water charge they do cheat your money when it comes to total bill. Well, my husband and I are used to honest business owners throughout Adelaide but this is not the case. When we got final bill of $69 dollars today, we just paid for it, but then later done math of the cost of the dishes and drinks it worked out to be $5 dearer. Now it's not a big deal, but was a very unpleasant detail for me. Unpleasant enough never to go back there again!

Poor Service. The food is not too bad while not much can be said about the service though some of the young staff are friendly. The taste and pricing of the food can be inconsistent and once we were served with fish that was a bit under cooked. Beware of the lady manager (she is probably the proprietor) as she can be quite arrogant. She always sulks and never ever cracks a smile or even greets her customers with a "hello". I am not a racist but she always appears to treat/serve non-Asians better than Asians. My family and I feel like we are never quite welcomed there. If not for their fish head noodle soup (this is probably the only place in Adelaide where this dish is served), I would stay away from this establishment.

Food =) environment =(. To start with, the interior design is quite dodgy, could do with some new decor/paint/whatever. but i must say, their food is pretty authentic. especially their fish head curry (THE BEST!), and kadazan fried chicken taste like those sold in "nasi lemak" stores in malaysia. pork spare ribs =/ just so-so

Kopi Tim - Hell Yeah. Having been to Kopi Tim on many occasions it's time to put my money where the food goes. This place always suprises me with its unique "Charm". Walking into the place you could be forgiven for thinking it is some king of mediteranian eatery, not Malay. My last venture there I finally managed to get organised enough to order ahead and get the fish head curry. I was not disappointed. Three whole snapper heads, floating in a delectable light coconut sauce complete with okra, eggplant and various other loveliness. Also, the salted fish and beanspout salad is highly recommended, for those of you that like your food a little fragrant, or in this case, stinky (in a nice way)
I have never had bad service here, perhaps a little slow at times but overall acceptable. I go there for the food, and if you are looking for atmosphere, i suggest you BYO.
One of my favourite places of Gouger Street, and that in its self is an extraordinary effort.
Sam Lee
Disappointed. Dishes are more authentic compared to other Malaysian places in Adelaide. Got one of our food orders wrong; dirty toilet; and we were ALWAYS given the table next to the frog ornament while the other tables were all empty!!!

I tried Kopi Tim for the first time a few years ago on the advice of my brother-in-law, who is a chef. Apparently the fish head curry is amazing, though I've never tried it, I'm not that adventurous. I've been about 15 times, often for a quick laksa on the way out somewhere, but I've also tried many of their other dishes. I love the food, and I've never had bad service. It's certainly not silver service, but for an authentic, low-key and well-priced meal, this is my pick of gouger street. I'll keep coming back! (at least until the chef yells at me)...

Sorry excuse of a restaurant. Just had an utterly disappointing meal at this establishment. The food was average - nothing special. However, my problem lies with the management. My party ordered water for the table and specifically requested tap water. Upon receiving the bill we noticed the exorbitant charge of $4 for tap water. After questioning the manager, she said it was a charge for Spring water. I clarified that we ordered tap water and yet she didn't budge. I requested a receipt with the restaurants name and ABN number for my records and she then agreed not to charge for the tap water. Upon settling the bill, she told my party of 4 not to comeback. Worst customer service ever experienced in Adelaide.

Went here two years ago and left so angry! I still think about the awful meal I had there! (Hence why I'm writing a review two years later). I ordered a chicken dish which tasted like an over-priced, slightly Asian-style KFC, with a bucket of fat on the side. The dish size was generous, but came with nothing else. Considering that I didn't like the food, I didn't want a big serve! The staff were rude, the restaurant seemed dirty. You could hear the chef yelling from the kitchen and there was a pile of dirty dishes on the counter for an hour. The toilets were disgusting, the staff treated us like we were unwelcome. Later that night I had to cancel my plans because I kept burping and re-tasting that awful meal and had stomach pains. I drove past this place today and remembered what a crappy night out it was, they deserve the worst review possible.

Been there thrice as it's extremely close to where I reside.quality of the food was very inconsistent, service was consistently average. first visit-wanted to order asam laksa but was unavailable so I ordered ayam kadazan which was tasty.second visit ordered curry puffs and sambal kangkong,it was alright,Malaysian street food may taste better for less than that price. My last and final visit was terrible, curry puffs were ice cold in the middle, special ribs tasted good but very overcooked and was so tough.most importantly my last dish, black bean yong tau fo was very dissappointing, sauce tasted bland,it's a such a pity as I love supporting Malaysian restaurants.
John Brookfield
Great food, but, attitude to service from kitchen really poor.
Casual SA Diner
Not brilliant but worth a positive vote. Traditional Malaysian dishes are the ones to order.
Fay Por
Beautiful. Like all restaurant there are a few classic dishes that makes the place stand out. in this place it is the curry fish head ( which you have to order 24hrs before ) and the deep fried chicken. other dishes are OK
Ginnie
BAD SERVICE. Service was terrible. Waited 30mins for a bottle of tap water. Chef was yelling in the kitchen, toilet was effing smelly and the food is not good enough to save our experience that night. Was charged $10 bucks just because we wanted to cut a birthday cake after dinner. Will never come back again. Worst restaurant in Gouger Street!!
Troy And Ris
To be honest - the food was not that impressive. We ordered a large selection of dishes - they were ok - nothing to write home about. The curry sauce for the roti was really watered down and had no flavour. Ribs (though I'm not sure how authentic Malay they are) were great! Loved em! Service was pretty poor too - the staff were not friendly and I actually felt like asking them for anything was a chore. Wouldn't serve my sister tap water - she had to buy bottled. Overall, pretty average experience.
Adelaidefoodcentral
The Sambal Egg was just a boiled egg with a chili based sauce smothered on top.

All in all, I was quite disappointed with the whole experience. The horrible service I heard about wasn’t there (thankfully), probably because of the new management or whatever but the food was just not up to mark. Will not be back.

My family and I have been coming to Kopi Tim for a few years and we have never walked away unsatisfied. Tonight on the menu was special fried chicken (Ayam Goreng), Char Kway Teow, Hainanese chicken and Roti Canai with curry sauce.
