Review Rickys Chicken Rice - Adelaide

J Alansalon
The steamed Hainanese chicken (I chose the thighs) rice at Ricky's Chicken Rice is a must-try at the Chinatown food court. The chicken, the soup, the sauces, and the fragrant rice are a magical combination! Best chicken rice in Adelaide, I think, and I'm pretty sure they were featured in the Advertiser before.

We ordered rice noodles from here which were 10/10! Service with a smile and prompt! Located in Adelaide central market. Reasonably priced.

Number 1: Hainanese style steamed chicken rice. It should be called chicken with steamed rice. It is no where near the Hainanese style.

Had the fried rice, it was delicious! Avoided the extra chilli but if you like it spicy, perhaps a good addition. Friendly service and nice chicken included. Would go back again!

Fair price, pleasant staff, and flavorful dish (I had the original Haianese chicken rice, #1). Posted signs tell you about the dish if you're not sure what to expect (temperature, bones, etc.). A good option in the food court.

Quality has dropped over the years. Misleading to call this Hainanese Chicken Rice if you are going to serve this dish with plain boiled rice :(

Absolute amazing special fried rice! I have it every time and cannot say enough, order the hot or extra hot options, they are great!

Hianese chicken rice ... Was disappointing... Boiled rice and over cooked chicken..no flavour side sauce was only decent component ...not really chicken rice at all .

Have eaten here many times so I think it's time to review! Lovely chicken rice, delicious stock and sauces, my only small critique would be the way the chicken was cut this time, there were many many small bones throughout the dish that were loose and floating in the broth. I love that this chicken is always on the bone, but maybe a bit more care in the chopping of the chook next time. Still, I will be back!

Traveling from Melbourne, naturally we will pay a visit to the central market. Was delighted to actually found a food court with lots of choices and varieties there. On this occasion we had Hainanese Chicken Rice. We love it and honestly I miss it especially the silky smooth and succulent steam chicken and the spring onion and ginger dip. Yummm. Even my toddler love that dip.

If I ever return to Adelaide for a visit this will be in my eat list.

The rice itself was at the milder side but I like it because it work so well with the chicken, the sauce, chilli, dip and soup.

Ricky's Chicken Rice is a market institution. I opted for the Hainan Chicken Rice on this occasion. The chicken, as expected, was juicy and tender however, the sauces seem to have lost some of their punch and the chicken broth was lacking in chicken flavor.

I was so excited when I initially heard about Ricky's chicken rice... Don't get me wrong, I think his food is good... My only problem is I love roasted chicken with my chicken rice but Ricky only serves steam chicken. Again it's my personal preference.. his other food is pretty average, the best is probably the chicken rice.

You will never find chicken rice this good and this cheap anywhere else. This not so hidden gem is found in the market food court, and it is hands down my fav find in the city. Hot tip: always order boneless chicken and extra green sauce.

I waited a long time for my order of the hainanese chicken to be ready. Once I received my order the chicken was cold, on a bed of mildly warm rice.

Ricky might have sold up and moved on but his legacy as thr chicken rice stall in the central markets will be around for as long as the place is.
I only ever get the chicken rice here but it really is rather good and for not a whole lot of money.

For once "Special" Fried Rice lived up to its name. This really is special. Chicken and prawns and bean sprouts and fried onion goodness. First time I have ever been asked if I wanted the fried rice "spicy". Say yes and thank me later

________________________________________________
Update 10/3/17

On a Friday night my daughter and I headed here before a cruise around the Market.

Mee Goreng and Chicken rice.

The Mee Goreng (medium chili) were spicy, salty hot and savoury with chinks of chicken, fish cake slices and some prawns. Delicious and came with a bowl of soup that helped deal with the spice heat.

The chicken rice was very tasty. I'm not getting into the argument about how authentic it was, but by golly it was a delicious meal.

Honest and filling for not a whole lot of money.

If people in Adelaide think this is Hainanese chicken rice then they are sadly misled!! Hainanese chicken rice are supposed to have rice that is cooked with chicken soup with ginger n garlic in it. This shop serves you plain rice with some cooked chicken. Worst, the chilli sauce is no where near authentic!! Go to Rundle Place food court - a store calls Warong - they serves an authentic Hainanese rice that is cooked the correct way with the fragrance smell of garlic and ginger in the rice ;)

The food at Ricky’s Chicken Rice rocks!!! It's my go-to place for a good, cheap plate of noodles. My favourite dish, and I have this most of the time, is the Mee Hoon Goreng (spicy version) - it's so good – with fish cake, chicken and prawns. What more could you want? Nice and spicy and not too oily or saucy. Pretty much perfect. Just typing about it now is making me drool. The Singapore noodles are also good, as is the kuey teow. Good for takeaway or eating in the food court - depending on how crowded it is. Every time I go to the Central Market Food Court, I think I really should try something else, but then I think - why would I as it probably won't be as good. I can’t really comment on the chicken rice as I’ve never had it.

A weekly lunch visit for Ricky's Steamed chicken rice. Order the boneless for an extra 50 cents. It's always delicious and that green sauce... Yum!

Decided to try Ricky's chicken rice from the great reviews the place received, and was utterly disappointed. Worst chicken rice, ever. The chicken was tasteless save for the fact that it was soaked in regular soy sauce. It was something that can be made hastily and sloppily back home and is probably not worth that $9.50 that we paid for it.

Ricky's Chicken Rice in chinatown is my go to place when a serious noodle craving hits. This place has been pumping out authentic noodles for years at bargain prices. Sure, most punters line up for the famous haianese chicken rice but they are missing out. Ha. Yes the chicken rice kicks ass but the noodles are awesomeness on a plate. Full flavours perfectly balanced that are humbly plated up by the experts day in day out. Generous serves filled with tender chicken and prawn are the norm. For me the Kway Teow noodles are in my top ten adelaide go to comfort dishes. Asian comfort food at its best at bargain prices. You can't go wrong.

I visited here recently while in Adelaide. I'm not a fan. I've eaten chicken rice in Asia (amazing!) as well as in Sydney. While Adelaide does the best Vietnamese food, Sydney definitely has it's Malaysian figured out.

I did enjoy the chicken. It was tender, cold and tasty. The rice was nice, and generously portioned. The sauces on the side were not balanced in flavour and were unpleasant. As the sambal and corinader/ginger flavours are what ties the dish together, this meal felt unbalanced and unfinished.

Give these guys a miss.
