Review Royal Thai Restaurant - Adelaide

Justin Macey
ABSOLUTE RIP OFF $17.90 for the smallest serve of thai green curry that consisted of chicken and a few pieces of egg plant. Very plain as per photo. Very dissappointed. Ive paid half as much for a bigger and better tasting serve.

Chinese owner, Chinese flavor. Pad Thai tasted like shrimp paste plus a lot of sugar. Stir fry vege was obviously not made with fresh ingredients but rather canned varieties Tom yum was just full of fish sauce

If you're looking for authentic Thai food, don't bother coming here. The Tom Kha was especially terrible and tasted like salted coconut milk with every other ingredient missing. Pandan chicken did not taste of it at all. Other dishes were below average.

One of the best local Thai restaurants. We kept coming back here for both dine in & takeaway

We called and asked if they could do a few dishes vegan (no fish sauce or egg) hardly anything could be done without fish sauce, even though it was on the vegetarian section but they assured us we could have some dishes. We ordered a "Pad Thai" and salt and pepper tofu after much confusion on the phone. The person on the phone assured us the salt and pepper tofu had no fish sauce and was vegan. When opening up our order we found salt and pepper chicken, NOT tofu. Not what we ordered, and we don't eat meat. The pad thai had no tofu, peanuts, chilli/lemon or any vegetables apart from bean sprouts and some greens and the sauce was really plain in flavour. Just a pile of noodles with no flavour, very disappointed.

Now this restaurant serves excellent Thai cuisine full of flavour with fresh spices, serving size could be a little larger but the food and presentation is excellent; both takeaway and dining in. I have been a regular customer and the cuisine is consistently excellent. Authentic Thai indeed.

Really good Thai food - deep flavours on all dishes and fantastic prices. We had the house special red chicken curry and the beef with capsicum and onions. Polite and efficient service. Great for take away too. Highly recommended.

I usually get the Penang Beef Curry and rice to take away. It's perfect all the time. They don't seem to have Menu Log, which i prefer to use, but it's a simple friendly phone call. Single dish wait time is usually 15-20 minutes for pick up.

Always a great feed !

I have eaten here quite a few times. Staff are quick to serve you and the meals come out quickly and steaming hot. It's a casual dining experience, not noisy and with simple decor but pleasant. Food is tasty and at the right price. Also convenient parking right out the front.

It's hard to find decent Thai food in Adelaide. At most, places are just average. Royal Thai however is an exception. The food is probably one of the better Thai places in Adelaide I've been too. Service can be a bit slow. Their red duck curry is flavoursome. Slightly disappointed with the yellow chicken curry - slightly tasteless. Their Thai fried rice was yummy ! All in all more good than bad.

I have been coming here for 14 years and have lost count of how many times I've been.

I love it. From the modern decor to the swift attentive service to the mouthwatering food.

They can do no wrong in my opinion. There are other Thai restaurants that I frequent but Royal Thai is and always has been my favourite.

If you don't have the Basil and Chilli New Zealand Mussels with fresh basil and chilli paste you are mad! Do yourself a favour and have them.

I've had most dishes and everything from the larp and fish cakes to the coral prawns are wonderful.

Me and my family just moved to the place nearby yesterday, it was the first time been there. Food was absolutely GOOD! Ordered spring roll for entrée, and Crispy beef, pad Thai and cashew nut chic for main. The Crispy beef was so good, we even ordered more takeaway!! Definitely will back and try other dishes.

Our first time here - had never seen it before as its tucked in with a small group of shops. The satay chicken was delicious. My husband had the Lemongrass Beef Hot Plate and I had the Panaeng Beef Curry - very tasty, good serves and served hot! I forgot to take the photo of mains until I had served some. Would definitely come back and try some other dishes.

Clearly trying to save a $. Burnt Pad Thai, dry Massaman curry and hot coconut milk instead of a flavorsome Tom Kha Gai.... And they will even laugh at you in the background if you ring to complain. Service is impeccable /:

My go to restaurant when I'm looking for a nice tasty meal. It's definitely a winner for a first date place (😉 trust me fellas, lol) it has a great vibe and a nice lay out. I recommend the pad Thai and the salt and pepper squid.

So last night was my grandpas 100th birthday (iiiii know!!!¡¡¡¡!!) he proclaimed weeks in advance he just wanted Thai takeaway. We happily obliged and ordered from old faithful: the Royal Thai. I have no credibility to call it authentic or not, but it is good, and what you'd expect of a decent take away. Fried rice was full of egg and chicken, pad Thai delicious, crispy beef is my all time favourite, and squid was well cooked. The cashew duck was oily but well flavoured. My one qualm was with the Penang curry- the beef wasn't cooked to melting, but decent flavours. Happy 100th grandpa!

Disappointing, tiny takeaway serves. All of our small rectangular tubs were half full, bar the duck noodles. When you pay $17.90 for Coral Prawns you expect better than 9 soggy battered prawns sitting in an oily chilli slurry.
There are much better thai places around the area for much cheaper takeaway.
The crispy beef was alright, and the Pla had 3 prawns and a few pieces of squid. The duck noodles were good.
Maybe as it was a busy Saturday night they simply didnt have the time to put in a better effort.
Would not be ordering takeaway from there again.

Horrible customer service. Ordered the vegetarian pad thai that was meant to have mixed seasonal vegetables and did not. When we asked the waiter about it he offered to bring us some mixed vegetables on the side which was lovely but then the manager came out and rudely explained that although the menu stated that, for the last 30 years they have never made it as the description says. The vegetables were never brought out. As it was a birthday we had cupcakes which we did use their matches to light the candles but no plates, forks or a cutting knife was offered. When we received the bill they had added a $10 cake service fee. After questioning what kind of cake service they provided (which was nothing) they said that it states on the menu that a cake service will be charged. I'm sorry, but it also stated on the menu that the vegetarian pad thai was meant to have mixed seasonal vegetables. We were very polite the whole time and were only enquiring as to their menu (which was false advertising) and it was like the manager was mocking us and was extremely condescending the whole time. I will never return to this restaurant and will never recommend it to anyone I know.

Ordered take away, smallest serving sizes. No value for money, although it was tasty, would never eat there again.

Serves too small. The food was nice enough, but I was still quite hungry when I'd finished my stir-fry main with rice. We went somewhere else for dessert as I don't believe in buying more just because they can't make a decent-sized serve.

Crispy Beef!!. This is our go-to thai in Adelaide. Highly recommend the massaman curry, great pad thai and extremely savoury crispy beef!

Not authentic. I was looking forward to eating at this place after hearing great things. In short, my green chicken curry tasted like western-confused spice rack experiment.

Unimpressed. As a coeliac I was unimpressed that ther was not a single gluten free item on the menu. I did not think that Thai food contained gluten in EVERY dish! When the food arrived it was 1/2 hour after the rest of the table and was totally tasteless. Give it a miss.

The prices on the menu is incorrect. Please update the correct one or simply just leave the price out, it's very confusing.

Maybe the Best Thai in Adelaide!. The same owner as Madame Wu's, Royal Thai has a very similar menu although is presented as a more upmarket Thai restaurant. The food is really good although maybe not entirely authentic. One let down would be the green chicken curry, but besides that a big thumbs up!

Great food, great service. Love this place. It's definitely worth the price and the service is exceptional.

Sensational. Recent trip to this Thai icon did not disappoint
Eight of us there on a Saturday night full house
Shared eight mains and we all loved it
Service was fine for a place booked out and a steady queue of takeaway customers lining up at the front
Have never had a bad experience at this place such that is our default Asian restaurant
Recent loss of two class act waitresses to Melbourne my only complaint
Splurge66
Food was very average compared to the last time we were here (approx 6mths ago), further more they charge $11.50 for 2.5ltr jug of coke!!! Outrageous!

Most UNROYAL THAI. I went to Royal Thai expecting a culinary experience never to forget with a friend, and that's what I got. The worst Thai meal I’ve had in years, and I’ll never go back there! I told the waitress I had an issue with the meal and she said she would get the manager, who never came anywhere near the table!! On going to pay the bill at the counter, I told the manager, who laughed and looked stupid, the pad Thai was cold, the curry duck was cold, (and it was extremely hard to find any duck anyway) and the whole barramundi was dry as an old leather boot, basically inedible. She said we don’t cook the fish here, we just reheat it, everyone knows that (I certainly didn’t other wise I go to Coles and buy some from the freezer section)??????? I asked her why they didn’t disclose that on the menu and she merely grinned! The only palatable part of the meal was the Shaw and Smith!! ROYAL THAI HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED! Much better Thai at Norwood Parade Thai or Rain Modern Asian at Norwood - and better staff!
NOTE: The previous owners of Royal Thai always served fantastic meals!!

Went there approx 10 years ago and loved it. Thinking new owners have taken over..... Quite simply Asian slops. Drunkin noodles were drowned, green chicken curry was bland and have had better in a food court, duck curry just passes. Avoid.

Very enjoyable dining experience. very good range of different dishes to choose from. will agree with previous review that the crispy garlic beef is inconsistent - but when it's good it's amazing. very high quality food. my favourite Thai restaurant in Adelaide
Off The Street
Nice Food – but inconsistent. We always try the crispy garlic beef – but it's inconsistent. Once it was the best we have ever had, but the last time it was just meh. The basil chilli chicken is good, but very salty. We have always found the staff to be friendly, but they are mostly inexperienced. The décor is nice, we don’t hesitate to go back (but we do prefer the Siam Bistro – which is their sister restaurant).
Master Diner
Love it! We are regulars to this restaurant. Food consistently excellent, service is personal and our fav is crispy garlic beef. We are surprised at the negative reviews on Royal Thai.

Exceptional Function Dinner. Generally we only get take-a-way from Royal Thai (RT), perhaps too lazy to bother with the formality of a sit down dinner!

For a birthday dinner we decided to eat in and were not disappointed, 16 of us, looked after, served exceptional meals and given the space to relax and talk.

Choosing the banquet menu was a fantastic idea, lashings of food (some not tried before) with the usual RT flavour. After filling up on the first and second rounds of food the waitress said, "are you ready for your second mains!" OMG there's more!

Highly recommended, great food and friendly service, well done.

Very very disapointing. This was once my favourite Thai eatery... I had to go and ask the waiter to take our order for us after waiting 20 minutes, we ordered drinks while we waited, the shared entree, coral prawns, Royal Thai Chicken and Thai rice for the mains, the mains beat the entree to the table, about 15 mins later, we asked for the entree to come out first , that arrived 30 minutes later, then the barely warm mains arrived again, without the rice, we waited about five minutes and eventually asked for the rice. that was cold gluggy and congealed. None of the staff came near us to offer us another drink. Eventually we asked for the food to be packaged up so we could take it home and heat it in the microwave. Manager barely managed a shrug when it was mentioned while paying the bill, other than to blame the new waiter, ( he was really quite pleasant.. and he didnt cook the food, and there were other waiting staff there so why didnt they help him out?) sadly this regular customer wont be back

Long time customer disappointed. Having been sneaking down the hill here for the last few years, I was very disappointed by the service tonight (11/04/12). Having waited for our appetizers for 40 minutes, the meal was cold! When our mains came out, the meat dishes arrived and our waiter wished us a good meal. By the time we realized our rice wasn't coming our meal had gone cold and we had to go to the bar to ask for the rest of our meal. We didn't even get the chance to order a drink. When we asked to speak with the manager, she really didn't cre that we had had such a bad dining experience, and blamed the whole fiasco on the new waiter (who probably wasn't responsible for the lacklustre food). If it had been a busy night, or if our table had had more than two people on it, I would have understood, but unfortunately none of those things applied, and the Royal Thai has now lost what had been a loyal fan.

Popular for good reason. We had often seen this diner set back off the busy Portrush Road and wondered what it was like. As part of our new 'search and try the local' eateries Royal Thai was booked and engaged last Friday night.
After a long week the interior was both a haven -suave and practical at the same time. There was a separate section for the mass of take-away customers.

We had booked on the recommendation of the receptionist ( person who answered phone for booking) for a window seat to capture the view of the sunset( over the top of the Granada Motor Inn across the road). There was a little scuffle with the head waiter when we grabbed the best window seat - 'I think that this table is booked for 4 not for 2'. The table (set for an intimate 2 ) was ours and my lady love was not moving. The sunset was real and appreciated.
BYO - $9.50 / bottle. Ice bucket (with ice) supplied.
The staff all appear to be young and it goes a long way with the popularity of the establishment.
We ordered the mixed entree - a good choice for first timers, the serve was generous and well presented.
We had checked out the menu and lady love noted that there was Black Rice Pudding on the dessert list.
Main course - Royal Thai Chicken with Royal Thai Rice to share. The serves were satisfactory for 2 to dine on one main and the rice.
We noted that the place was filling up and the crowd was eagering participating. Another good sign.
The rice pudding was good but a little light on the coconut creme.
A most enjoyable meal in what is a popular eatery. Well worth a second and third visit....

Yucky. I had the vegetarian pad thai... it was burnt, mushy and flavourless. The spring rolls were soggy. My mum had chicken red curry and described it as 'average'. The only good thing about this place for us was the cheap price. When paying for the meals the worker informed me that 'they had an old machine' and couldn't do savings but could do credit... go figure... Will definitely give that one a miss next time.

Royal Thai Try. As far as Thai food goes, OK at best. More like Chinese inspired Thai food, not authentic Thai cuisine at all. Nice atmosphere and good service though.

As a visitor to this city and caught in the suburbs due to transport strike elected to walk across the road to local thai restaurant. What a surprise as it was one of the best Thai meals I have had in several years. Duck with cashews was my favorite. Thanks.
Casual Diner
Unsuspecting!. This is a place the locals know about! Set in a group of small shops near a laundromat, sits one of the best quality Thai cuisine I have ever had in Adelaide! You have to have the signature dish (chicken) or the Crispy Beef! See you in there!
