Review Astonish Patisserie - Adelaide

CY Leow
The dessert was good but nothing to brag about. Very aesthetic presentation. Everything other from the ice cream was kind of room temperature which felt abit weird to eat (it was a very warm summer day). I came very early so it's was very relaxing and quiet, so an extra star for the nice relaxing atmosphere

It was a bad experience for me and my partner, we came to celebrate her birthday, we plan to have a happy ending for the birthday at this shop, but it did not happen. We ordered a taro dessert and a popcorn chicken, the dessert was good, but the chicken was terrible, we reckoned the chicken has spoiled and had a wired taste, so we could not finish all of them, it was my first time to waste food as I could not swallow it from my throat. I hope I will not get sick from the chicken I ate. I will not go back anymore.

The desserts look amazing. Lots of effort taken to present them perfectly. Unfortunately the moffle is tasteless really. It's beautiful and colourful but only tasted sugar. The desserts ordered by my friends also looked appealing and they enjoyed them. There are vegan/vegetarian options which is a plus. Nice atmosphere, colourful and quirky. The savoury menu is limited but I guess most people go there for the treats. Prices were reasonable. Service was fairly quick.

Absolutely phenomenal! Food was delicious, staff were friendly and the place itself was such a cosy environment :)

This cake was delectable… and when I say that I mean it! We celebrated my cousins 30th and Chinese New Year all in one! They nailed it with the decorations and theme! 🐯🧧🎊 The cake was under $100 and was the fluffiest, most tasteful cake I have ever had to date! I highly recommend ordering from here! Love love love! Totally in love with their desserts! Every single dessert is such an amazing art! Taste so good! And the service is so good! The waitress gave me some candies while waiting for the desserts! She is so nice! Do recommend!

A Cosy hidden gem in the city, found it last night with my friends and in loved with their desserts and atmosphere. Highly recommend and will go back again to try more of those yummy goodies! 🥰🥰🥰 I had their matcha latte and panna cotta, both my friend and I enjoyed. amazing! 🤤👍🏻

The food is presented exceptionally, unfortunately thats the best part. I had the Cheesecake and whilst it looked aesthetically great, I found that all of the additional toppings added little to no extra flavour. The service was a touch slow and the bathrooms cleanliness and amenities (Soap, Toilet Paper etc.) could use some attention.

Firstly it looks like the images of the place and the menu havent been updated in a while. Its pretty small inside and the waitress wasnt particularly inviting which are the only reasons i havent given it a 5. Its nice inside but small but the japanese katsu curry i had was amazing! Along with the geisha cocktail! It wasnt very expensive with generous serves. Ill definitely be coming back to try their desserts, would give the experience 4.5!

Great ambience, very cozy. <br/>1 dish per person rule.<br/>Waited a long time for the waitress to take our orders both times. <br/>- We didn't know if we should go to the counter or wait for them, but when we did they took us back to our tables to order.<br/><br/>1st time: <br/>Korean Fried Chicken Burger - Chicken was nicely fried, and had lots of gochujang in it. <br/>- Buns were like normal cheap burger buns. <br/>- Chips were only the slighted crispy, but it didnt bother me. <br/>Maybe because this was mainly a dessert place, savoury foods were not their forte.<br/>Karaage Chicken Dry Noodles<br/>- My friend had the dry noodles, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The noodles were al dente bouncy ramen noodles. <br/><br/>2nd time: <br/>Rosewater Watermelon NY Cheesecake <br/>- Served in a wine glass, was expecting a plate<br/>- Cheesecake was very silky smooth<br/>- Couldn't taste the rosewater<br/><br/>Chocolate and Strawberry Waffles<br/>- Fresh crispy waffles, delicious<br/>- Nearly drowned in milk chocolate<br/>- Relatively large serving

Had a Ferraro Roche waffle and it was awful - the waffles were soggy and the ice cream on top wasn’t nice. Left a terrible taste in my mouth.

We quite enjoyed the desserts here. We had their matcha roulade and  could taste the  matcha in the dish. It would be better if the matcha was richer in flavour. We also enjoyed their chocolate lava dish, crepe cakes and strawberry and chocolate waffle. Our only feedback in regards to the waffle was we thought the waffle was kind of soggy.

I really wanted to like Astonish. The outside is cute and inviting, and the inside is also adorable. I popped in on a whim with some friends and we got the matcha waffle, some churros and a sundae. Sadly, the sundae was basically just ice cream, and the matcha waffle was kind of soggy. The ganache that came with it was quite bitter. On a more positive note, I loved the matcha ice cream on the waffle and the churros were crunchy and very moreish. I remember telling myself, on return, try a beverage instead. Some were floating around and they looked great.

We stopped here for cakes after dinner. The interior could do with a bit more light.. friendly staff.. reasonable selection of cakes and sweets .. the waffles were ok..we tried their layer cake which was not too sweet and light ; I enjoyed the flavour however it was served with caramel popcorn which threw off the balance of the cake. Verdict : average

Stopped here for a quick dessert on the way home from dinner in the central markets. My partner had the chocolate and strawberry waffles, and I hate the sticky date pudding. Both were nice, but not mind blowing. Ambience wasn't the best, but I think the food was value for money. Wouldn't be against going again but wouldn't go out of the way.

Can't remember how much I paid for their green tea cake, maybe about $8, and the size? It was smaller than my fist, and my hands are pretty small. The worst part is I couldn't even really taste much of the green tea taste. The only thing I like about this place is their Green Tea Latte
Lou
Nice place to go for desserts with friends. The sticky date pudding is served as two square pieces rather than a round "pudding" shape and is a little dry despite the butterscotch sauce. The coconut creme brulee is good if you enjoy the coconut flavour but the serving is very small. The matcha 3 ways is popular, and if you're a fan of matcha then you will enjoy it - the matcha tiramasu has just enough green tea flavour and the matcha creme brulee isn't too bad either even though it's weirdly in an eggshell. I actually ordered my birthday cake from here (14" square tiramasu cake) that costed $65 and $5 for the birthday message - so quite cheap compared to other places. If you like coffee and not too sweet cakes, then the tiramasu would suit you :)

I had walked by this place and followed them on social media for a while before I actually visited. Unfortunately I was not a fan, the place just seemed really unclean and had a really bizarre decor. It put me off ordering any food so I opted for a hot drink instead, which was okay. My friends ordered desserts and while they looked good the portion size was too small for the price paid

Finally made a visit to Astonish Patisserie after hearing so much about it. Honestly I'm not sure why this place receives all that rave because the food is not overly impressive, and the service is even less so.<br/><br/>The restaurant was empty aside from one other table when I visited, so there really was no excuse for the lack of service! I ended up having to go up to the counter to order because the staff just left me at my table and didn't come back to take my order.<br/><br/>I went with the Latte Crepe Cake ($14), which arrived at my table beautifully arranged. There were two slices of crepe cake - a dark chocolate and the other one which I assume was the latte flavour. The chocolate slice was topped with a dollop of chocolate cream, and the latte one with vanilla cream and a thick, indulgently sweet sticky caramel, topped with caramel popcorn and corn flakes, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.<br/><br/>The cakes had wonderful flavour. I loved how they weren't overly sweet. The dark chocolate flavour came through strongly, which, as a dark chocolate lover, I found delightful. Unfortunately, the texture of the crepe really let it down. It was a bit too wet and spongy. I think a fluffy texture would have worked much better in a crepe cake.<br/><br/>I also took away an Apple Crumble Cheese Cake Box ($5). For $5, the slice was a very generous size. I was so excited to dig into it, because the crumble on top looked fantastic. Sadly, the cheesecake was just OK. The crumble was indeed delicious, but the other elements were a bit of a let down. The base was sadly soggy, and the apple chunks on top were this oddly bright yellow colour, and for some strange reason had an artificial flavour despite being very obviously real apple.<br/><br/>Maybe I just ordered the wrong things, but my visit to Astonish Patisserie was slightly disappointing, and I'm not sure whether I would be returning.

I've been to Astonish once in the restaurant and most recently, for takeaway. The restaurant was nice and cozy, with mismatched decor and a warm fireplace. I really enjoyed my experience there. My takeaway, however, was only average. Although well presented, the sticky date pudding was quite hard and not very enjoyable.
Rosie
Yum! A cute, quirky place for dessert. Lots of different, not your average desserts to choose from & big range of different hot drinks. I enjoyed the caramel hot chocolate but the coffee are nice too.
Lynette R
Had coconut creme brûlée and husband had the soft centre hazelnut & chocolate cake. My brûlée was nice but his was amazing. Only downfall is service is somewhat slow.

it was a sad experience for me, I was travelling Adelaide for a few days, trying to find a new dessert place for my sweet tooth. Came across the pics and found this one quite interesting. It was sad because I walked from the city centre to this place....wasn't close at all, is my fault though I shouldn't have done it on a hot day. <br/><br/>anyway, back to the food I ordered. I had the thousands layers crepes, with some caramel popcorns and a scoop of ice cream on the side. It was just TOO SWEET, not from the crepes itself, but the sauce they put on it.
The Munchkin
I was really impressed with the waffles over here. Had the banana and salted caramel walffle which was simply divine. The sauce was amazing and were warm as they were freshly made. On other occasions I've also tried the matcha three ways and the Earl Grey cake. The earl grey cake was really good as well. These dessert are always nice to look at and better to eat. Prices are usually pretty reasonable.

We went on a voucher and thought it was really good value (dessert and a glass of wine) The dessert menu is various and the portions quite big. We liked each dessert we ordered. The place itself is a converted house with a cosy interior, with a homely feel to it. It can be quite busy and noisy with sometimes big groups. Overall we liked the experience and went twice to finish our date night on a sweet note. We would go back.
Wifeychef
Came here on a Thursday night, it was extremely quiet. We both ordered a peppermint tea not so impressed that it was "Twinnings" tea as it is a dessert place and I think maybe they should put some effort in some decent tea. I can have Twinnings tea at home. Anyway I ordered the Strawberry spring rolls. The price was $12 and I thought was way over priced for what it was. (Photos attached) and my husband ordered a Earl grey chocolate tart. He wasn't impressed at all.<br/>The flavor was very plain for both our dishes. The owner had told us it's been open for 3 years, no wonder it was quiet. Would not return.
HoneyBintheCity
Really good late nite dessert place. The middle area feels like an old library and slightly Beauty & the Beast-ish because of the old books, furniture and the fireplace. The back area lacks a bit of atmosphere but it doesn't deter from the desserts. The 'Long time no see' share plate is fantastic as is the apple crumble. Be sure to take home some homemade Macaroons too, they're fantastic! 😀👍

Having this yummy dessert with my friend, definitely a good spot for people who are looking somewhere quite to chat. There dessert are really nice and love their combination especially the popcorn crepe cake! Yum
Foodiegal
My favourite go-to place for dessert. It has one of the best matcha latte's in town, and I regularly drive across town just for it. The menu's expanded quite a bit with lots of old favourites like sticky date pudding. FYI, they also make amazing birthday cakes!
Klassy
The place was buzzing even though it was a weeknight and despite it getting a little busy it wasn't too rowdy. Good ambience, friendly staff and patisserie owner. We had the watermelon cheesecake to celebrate my parents' birthday and it wasn't too sweet which was perfect for us. Also had the "Long Time No See" which was served with a but of theatre so that was interesting. Desserts tasted pretty good and presented beautifully. Definitely a place I would visit again just to try the other menu items which sounded good too.

Been here twice already and I'm sure ill be coming again soon. First time i came here for dessert and i ordered the matcha green tea waffle. I never had so much waffles in one go before in my life! They gave me 4 pieces and they were all pretty thick, but it sure tasted good. Although it was not what i was expecting as the matcha green tea part was just a paste/spread, it still went really well with the waffle and syrup.<br/><br/>The second time i went i had came straight from basketball and missed out on dinner, so i decided to try their savoury menu. Not going to lie, but their savoury menu is so much better than their dessert menu. The amount of choices were great and they had a special for each day. Although waiting for 50 minutes for my burger was pretty ridiculous, the burger was amazing. The sauce was on point, it was actually the key feature of the burger. I would definitely come here again to try the remaining things on their savoury menu, and maybe come every once in a while for their desserts.

Came here couple of times. The consistency of the quality is not well managed. Sometimes it is really good and sometimes it is very average. Came here last month and the dessert sharing platter was awesome. Came again tonight with a bigger group but dessert was just average, was not spectacular. The thousand layer cake was great but there was another piece of cake there which is multilayer not thousand layer. The multilayer was crepe and some sour jam which completely does not belong to that dish. It would be good if they just leave the thousand layer cake as it is. Too much flavour complicates the flavour of the dish. My friends had the waffle which needed more custard and ice cream. It is just way too dry to finish the dish with the amount of ice cream and custard served. The sticky pudding was another dry dessert, needed more sauce or ice cream to go with it. The coconut creme brûlée - consistency isn't right but the flavour is there. One of the best dish of the night is the panna cotta was a stand out tonight. It is very refreshing and the panna cotta set to perfection, presentation was sensation too for that. I think it is overall pretty average night. They just need to keep the standard constant. Stick to the basics and not over complicate the dishes.

Frankly, I left Astonish astonished, by the foods, decor and service! I have a sweet tooth, which my dentist hates, and I must try Astonish, which serves both desserts and savoury foods. The place has a very nice vintage feel to it, giving it a very rustic atmosphere which is further supported by candle light, very nice indeed. Service was fantastic, greeted as soon as i speed through the door and desserts brought to the table in no time. Overall, astonishing deserts at astounding value for money!!

I LOVE this place. The desserts are always creative, different, and most importantly delicious. <br/>The decor and atmosphere has an old "library " feel to it. The fireplace with all the books and their bronze coffee table is the best part of this cafe. <br/>The staff are quite attentive while also understanding that people go there to chit chat and mostly want to be left alone with their coffee and dessert. <br/>One of my favourite places for dessert.
Scott Burgan
Friendly owner, delicious inventive deserts and cool atmosphere. I've been here twice and enjoyed my visits on both occasions. The owner is extremely friendly and welcoming, a pleasure to talk to. The deserts are delicious and with just enough sugar without being overkill like a lot of desert places. When I was there I tried the desert tasting platter which had crepes layered into a cake covered with caramel and popcorn, warm chocolate butter pudding, and creme brûlée. Everything on this platter was delicious and done with some unique touches. The second time I went I ordered the apple crumble which was beautifully cooked and seasoned with a light and crunchy crumble topping. <br/><br/>I'll definitely be going again.

mmmmmmm yummo!! clean place and spacious..was busy <br/>friendly... good food!!<br/>good coffee ... my crepe was a little overcooked but still good :) <br/><br/>will be back

Until recently the restaurant was only known for its desserts, wines and coffee, but now they have released a new savoury menu to cater for the hungry day time lunch crowds. They have also added a few new dessert options which includes a fondue that is available in dark Belgian chocolate or Japanese green tea matcha, only to name a few. They also have an extensive list of smoothies and ‘refresher’ mixed drinks including sangria.
Tempting Palates
An impromptu visit to Astonish Patisserie at 393 King William St, Adelaide with good friend, blogger Adelaide Food Central was in order to experience a late night dessert. After a long decision process we decided on the Warm Cinnamon Apple Crumble and the Passion Fruit and Kiwi Pavlova. The Apple Crumble was delicious. The apple was cooked well and had a lovely cinnamon taste and had the right balance with flavours and textures for the crumble on top. The vanilla ice cream is always the perfect companion for a crumble but a better quality vanilla ice cream would have made this dessert perfect. The accompanying Plum Compote was an extra that, although it filled a space on the serving board, wasn't really necessary and we didn't use it. What can you say about a lovely looking dessert like the Passion Fruit Pavlova? We really wanted to like this dessert but it fell short of any kind of wow factor. Visually it was pretty with the green colours of the kiwi fruit but without the passion fruit this would be a dull dessert. Even the lemon sorbet couldn't lift the flavours. Overall Astonish is a nice place for dessert. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating without fail. Your own choice of dessert will determine how you feel about this establishment. It would be best to try a few more of the desserts before writing this place off as ordinary.  Warm cinnamon apple crumble. Passion fruit and kiwi pavlova.

Astonish Patisserie is no longer just a dessert bar, it has a brunch option. They are now open from 11 am to 2:30 pm, just not on Mondays.

Green tea latte was GOOD, but the waffles not so.. Had their peanut butter waffles & chocolate waffles. The richness (& thickness) of the peanut butter & chocolate overwhelmed the taste of the waffles. By the time my friend & I were half-way through it, we were very put off by the taste. Other than that, the waffles were thick and crispy which was good. But, I wouldn't order it again. The thing I really enjoyed was the green tea latte. Much better than the one I've tried at Sir Cafe.

Love this place, the house is decked out so well it really feels like home, the path in the corridor to the bathroom & the music sheets with lyrics reading up the wall were quirky additions that made the night! The sharing plate is a must the desserts are exquisite well done I will return soon!

BEST DESSERT IN ADELAIDE. I come here almost every weekend with my partner and am continuously blown away. The desserts are delicious, beautifully presented and are so unique in flavour. It's great to have a dessert place with unique concepts rather than just waffles and fondue. The atmosphere is so cosy and cute. The staff are friendly and helpful. And the prices are great for such huge portions! My favourite is the waffles with balsamic ice cream. Mind blowing. This is by far the best dessert place in adelaide(trust me I've tried almost all)
FoodCritic
Very small portions and mediocre desserts. Not worth the money you pay.
IKnowMyShit
And that's the way the apple crumbles. So we ventured upon this small patisserie when the better half of me caught wind of a new apple crumble dish in town via Google. <br/><br/>No crumbles were present unless you consider fine pastry bits as crumbles. This is preposterous. Apple "crumble"? I think not. Pastry had poor texture, lacked crispiness and felt saturated. The filling itself was also quite standard, however the accompanying scoop of ice cream on the side did add a positive balance to the plate. This not so positive feedback might be due to the fact that my partner did not pour the given sauce onto the apple crumble. <br/><br/>Although the apple crumble was a disappointment, the drinks were absolutely 'astonishing'. My partner believes the chai latte we had was a tad too sweet, but what the hell, no ones perfect right? I thought the chai latte was sensational. <br/><br/>All in all, we rate this astonishing place 6 out of 10.

Astonished me. Last Saturday I went to astonish with my friends there are a lot of people celebrating a birthday, the atmosphere was very good, and staff were very busy but also took care of us very well. I had a chia latte and sticky date, the chia latte tasted great. The sauce of sticky date(I don't know what that was)was not overly sweet but tasty ,and matched to the pudding. It's best winter dessert in my opinion, and only $12 for the large portion!highly recommend! Definitely come back:-)

Quality and proportion of dessert went down dramatically comparing to last year. Would not come back again.

Birthday Disaster. This is a bit of a delayed post but I recently wrote about this in my blog and thought I had to post here too. I held my birthday at Astonish in January. I had to pay a room hire fee for the 2.5 hours we were there for with dessert for 20 people including 20 ice teas. Firstly, the room was so extremely hot! Having had a few hot days prior to the day, indoor was hotter than outdoor. The lack of air conditioning was the first fail. It was very distracting when we were constantly sweating and the warm temperature had also made the cheese platters and macarons melt in the room they were left in before we arrived. The other desserts were quite good only that we were not given any cutlery or napkins to eat with, including not having a knife to cut my birthday cake and plates to serve it in. The ice teas were suppose to be redeemed with the tokens I was given then to my guests. But when people went to redeem them they kept being told to go back to their seats and the waitress will take their order, but the waitress struggled to bring out the other drinks my guests have ordered within the hour let alone take the orders, so in the end only 14 of 20 teas were redeemed (somehow our fault for not redeeming all). Of the iced teas that did come, they were lukewarm!! Drinking them in an already scorching hot room was not pleasant! <br/><br/>Finally when it came to paying for the rest of my payment for the room and desserts (I have already paid for 10% deposit plus my cake in Oct 2014), they decided to charge me for 27 people who were still there (when there were no extra food served) instead of the 20 people's worth of dessert that was initially negotiated, plus charging the birthday cake I have already paid for! Two bottles of wine were suppose to be included in the package never came either. Apparently they couldn't find the receipts that of the payment that were already made. <br/><br/>After some debate about the payments, they then dare say they have lost money from us being there that night! Are you serious?? The chef and waitress struggled to put out the food and drinks that they knew since Oct needs to be served that night, they didn't anticipate that the 27-30 people will more likely to put more drinks orders in during the night?? And if they had problems in putting these drinks and food out (also putting off my guests in ordering different desserts which they could've had more earnings for the night), how did they lose money from my event? Plus why would you even say that to a paying customer? The whole thing never made sense in the first place, you either charge a fee per person OR charge for the room hire as a package, NOT BOTH! In the end, I paid for what I initially negotiated, and to compensate the the two bottles of $25 each of wine that never came they gave us four $10 worth of vouchers (where later on I read in small font that you are only able to redeem one $10 voucher after spending $20 at the place). Meaning I have to spend more money to get back what I originally should have received.... No thanks! The whole thing was very disappointing and upsetting as I like my guests to have enjoyed my event and I try to be organised (having sorted out venue and food in Oct), but due the the terrible organisation and service of this place I felt that it was a big let down to my guests and myself.
Oh-bozz
Simply amazing. The bannana and nuttella waffle were amazing. The staff was friendly. The place was nice and Cosy. just perfect. highly recommend this place. keep up the good work. definitely will be back here. :)

It says online you are open till 12am so on a Wednesday night we came down and you where shut. Not impressed. Change your times on the net
Alexis.panglx
Shocking. Chocolate + strawberry waffles were average. Balsamic ice cream that came with was yuck on its own but went surprisingly well with the dish. Sticky date pudding was floury and dry. Could not be salvaged with the butterscotch sauce that was under-done caramel.
Lachlan Clyne
Every time I return I enjoy one of Adelaide's best desserts. It's atmosphere has a quirky/vintage library feel, staff knew their food and the food itself was truly astonishing (sorry about the pun). Very much enjoyed the sticky date pudding.
NomNom
The worst desserts I have ever tasted. Creme Brulee tasted off and had sour yoghurt on it. The Crepes werent crepes... turned out to be a slice of cake with crepe texture.. combination of flavors were terrible. No one finished their desserts because it was so bad. The only good thing was the Chai Latte.
Michael
The desserts were amazing, atmosphere was great and good attention from waiting staff and very friendly.
Christy
The music is good, atmosphere is good too! Also really like the special dessert- strawberry chocolate cake! The staff are friendly and great service. Will come back next time again!
Waffle Man
I have never felt more uncomfortable trying to eat a dessert than at this astonishingly bad place with the manager staring and eaves dropping over our shoulders. Not only was it extremely uncomfortable but the quality of food left a lot to be desired. The "strawberry and chocolate waffles" consisted of a grand total of one strawberry cut into quarters and scattered across the plate. When skim milk was asked for in an iced Chocolate the waiter could not only not fulfil this request but had no idea what skim milk was. Then when the iced chocolate arrived you could more accurately describe it as room temperature chocolate milk. The apples were not fresh, nothing seemed to be fresh, basically will never be returning.
Elysia Ang
Disappointed TOO many times. Desserts were already so bad the first time, then worse the second time we decided to go there. The crepes were horrible, cream cheese one especially, actually think the cheese had actually gone bad, the taste was so awfully strong!!! Also had a chocolate dessert and could tell that the chocolate sauce was reused and reheated too many times, wasn't smooth at all. Everything is so unfresh! JUST HORRIBLE can't believe I had to pay over $20 for it, such a waste of my money. Coffee was bland, felt like I was drinking frothed milk.
Traveller000
Bad Night Out. Having been to a number of other dessert places in and around Adelaide, I have never experienced such dreadful drinks and service. The cold drinks were luke warm, it took 55 minutes for the drinks to arrive and the worst was the service. It felt (and was literally) like begging (only we did the paying, not the other way around)!<br/><br/>I am not exaggerating, these people have no respect for their customers and I have never experienced this level of disrespect for their customers and their own profession. I am at a loss for how they can operate a business in this way. <br/><br/>Unless this place is placed under new management, I will never return again.
Rhysjscott
Don't bother!. I attended Astonish recently and was really disappointed. The staff were rude and seemed too busy to respond to orders. I was continually told to sit down and come back later. Simply ordering a bottle of wine took about an hour. The shop was not air conditioned on that night and was really hot and uncomfortable as a result. At the end of the night they attempted to charge us for several items that they hadn't provided us and argued with us over this point. There are lots of good dessert places in Adelaide, don't bother with this one.
Dontspamme
Just Awful. To kick off the night, an Iced tea I was given was luke warm. Later after waiting 30m for a cup of coffee, I went to find out where it was and they had forgotten - some time later again when we once more went to find out where it was we discovered it had been simply left at a different table. I went with a group, and others had very similar experiences with the service. As for the party itself we were promised a reserved room, but no such reservation was clear and the public were free to come and go. The room was very hot and suffy, so not many people stayed in there regardless. Only 14/20 promised Iced teas were delivered, and all of them were warm. We were promised two bottles of free wine which were never delivered, and the wine we tried to buy took literally 45m to sort out. In the end, even though we had agreed to pay for a hired room and 20 peoples worth of food, they tried to charge on a per head basis. No extra food was provided to rationalise the per-head payment. To pay back for the two wines that were not given to us (valued at $25 each), we were only given $40 worth of vouchers. Finally, paying was difficult because their eftpos machine was broken.
KS Yeoh
Failed to deliver. Attended a friend's party at the place. They did not deliver what was agreed to. Ended charging more than they should. Poor service, serving average dessert and drinks.
Olivia
The food was in edible, I had the dessert 'burger', whilst my friend at the 'panna cotta'. Disgusting is putting it nicely. All the different flavour and texture combinations on the burger just did not mix, and the panna cotta tasted more like off milk. Upsetting as we were excited by this place..don't be fooled by the great decor.
Loy88
Lovely service! Good soy latte! All round one of the best dessert places in Adelaide. I had the burger... TO DIE FOR!!! Great ambiance and so well priced. Winner!!
Loveeating
Have been there twice, enjoyed both of the nights. Love the library room area. I tried the new dessert 'Chocolate Implosion', it seems like the magic of dessert, very fine dining style. The fruit tea was really tasty, I tried the mixed berry with English breakfast tea . Highly recommended.
Leena
Great dessert place.. Found this place by chance and very happy with my experience. I love that it is a larger venue, compared to most of the dessert places in Adelaide. The decor is sophisticated but still warm and inviting. So sick of that mason jar hipster trend. Service was friendly and helpful. My friend and I both had the mocha and cream cheese crepe which we both found to be quite delicious, but the highlight for me was the caramel popcorn. I must say the presentation on the plate was beautiful. I do not like macarons so I cannot objectively comment. Coffee was good. The portion size was larger than I expected and definitely worth the $16 price tag.
JJfood
Not bad at all, Bombe Alaska and choc tart were very nice. The macaron however was refrigerated and very mediocre.

How to combine Adelaides two great loves- Desserts and Burgers. Let's face it, we weren't really hungry but I'd been wanting to try Astonish Desserts for ages and would brook no argument from Mr McG.<br/>One Thousand Layer Cake and a Dessert Burger later, i was already composing a glowing review in my head. They really take care with their desserts, the quality is unquestionable and the taste combinations well thought out.<br/>we'll be back.
Mel Alexander
Awesome!. Popped in just before close and was served a cheesecake that was nothing short of AMAZING!! Going there for my birthday in may for sure!,,,
Ez
Brilliant service and food. The waiter had a passion for the food and was very eloquent when describing it. The desserts were delicious.
Gary Maguire
Great ambiance, staff really helpful. Desserts are ok, not the wow factor I expected, could come back, but most probably not...
Sarah
Dissapointed. Came here last night for the first time and was left feeling very dissatisfied.<br/>I ordered a caramel latte - I could not taste any caramel whatsoever. It was in fact, one of the worst, most bland lattes I have ever had. For dessert I ordered the 'Warm Banana Cake.' This dish was a complete rip-off considering the serving size; $15 for 3 TINY squares of banana 'cake'. Tasted very average. Will not be coming back.

WOW! Does not get any better than this. We found Astonish by chance & were very impressed to say the least. The staff were very welcoming & the desserts are sensational. We will defiantly be going back & recommend to others.

We love our dessert bars and we usually go to spats but are extremely impressed with astonish I had the panna fire and that just hit my number one dessert ever will be returning soon!!

Waitress tried serving us 'compost' instead of 'compote' <br/>Came here a second time and it appears they've changed their menu (for the better?). Desserts like mr burger and the giant crunchy profiterole were pretty good.

Tasty and good atmosphere .. I like this place better than devour on prospect road.

Great interior but wasn't overly impressed with the desserts on the menu however the macarons were very yummy the next day

Very nice interior design and ambiance but the items on the menu were very overpriced. I had the cheesecake and mango mousse, whilst they were decent, it wasn't worth the $8 mark. Other items were around $15-$20.

My new favourite place. OMG. How else can you start a review about a place called "Astonish" with anything but O.M.G.? I just went tonight and decided to write my first urbanspoon review ever, just to share my experience. From the friendly staff - who successfully negotiate the fine line between professionalism yet homey camaraderie with the customers - to the incredible desserts ... I have no idea why anyone would feel as if they could give this place a bad review. We were welcomed at the door and then shown the dessert cabinet before being taken on a tour around the cafe - a really lovely and welcoming touch. We ended up taking a table in the Library Room. Easily my favourite room of the house. We took forever deciding what we wanted (the choices were incredible, how could I decide on just one?!?) - I eventually settled on the seasonal fruit pizza (with balsamic ice-cream - the most exquisite ice cream I've ever tasted) and my dining partner chose the creme brulee (vanilla). While we waited, our hot drinks arrived and we were also served water (yet another lovely touch). When our desserts arrived I was really impressed with the beautiful presentation and the genuine interest in whether we would enjoy what we ordered. The dessert pizza was made on a base of puff pastry, that is made in-house and takes about 3 days to make - and oh my can you taste the difference. That was superb pastry. I've eaten a few in Paris in my time, and this rated right up there. As for the rest of my dessert, unbeknownst to the staff (and me!), I had picked a dessert that included pears poached in red wine. Most would agree that would be lovely, except I am seriously allergic to red wine so could eat all of the dessert minus the pears. This didn't bother me in the slightest - I don't expect people to know my allergies! - however the staff were concerned that I may not have enjoyed the dessert as much as I should have, and they surprised me by bringing out the MOST DELICIOUS watermelon + lime granita I've ever tasted in my life (seriously boys, please consider putting this on the menu - I'd come back for it anytime). The place itself was charming, the music was perfect and the atmosphere hit all the right notes without a trace of pretentiousness. I was so comfortable there I felt as if I was a guest in someone's house and thinking of myself as a customer somehow felt wrong. The only thing I didn't like was the realisation that yes, I would eventually have to leave and go home. Bottom line: ignore the whinging reviews (seriously, I don't get those) and give Astonish a try. I'll be back often to hang out in my new favourite place. Thanks for a great night guys!

I'm not sure whether the chef was graduated from Docle & Co or not,but the presentation of the products look similar, but a little bit unfresh. The surface of Macaron just horrible. I know I can't complain with the real French Macaron.

Lovely evening. My partner and I had a lovely post-dinner dessert and coffee at Astonish. I note that all the people complaining about the high prices seem to be referring to the pannafire, the one item on the menu that does have quite a high price. The other prices are equivalent to most dessert cafes. Additionally, the delicious cakes and mousses in the take-away cabinet are a real bargain. My partner had the molten chocolate cake from the main menu, which he really enjoyed, and I had a delicious mango mousse from the cabinet. <br/><br/>The staff were wonderful and went out of their way to make us welcome. They have some really creative items on the menu. The decor is also lovely - the library room is gorgeous. I'll definitely be back.

ASTONISHED!. Prices really are astonishing especially when you can tell the quality leaves a lot to be desired, we had the blackforest and also had the panna fire, the blackforest was nice not too sweet, and well priced but could have had this at the nearest Cibo. Our bombe alaska was burnt and tasted bitter, the pistachio flavour was like toothpaste and the panna cotta was bland. For the price I expected a greater level of finesse and expertise.<br/><br/>The ambiance also failed, it just feels very generic and geriatric, the lighting is awful, the dated brown leather dinner chairs are from a from Le Cornu back catalog and the clunky gigantic tables does not help matters either. Actually 'clunky' is the most apt description of this entire place and the only thing 'astonishing' about Astonish is the prices and the lack of detail!<br/><br/>BTW just read Ben's review - obviously a disingenuous review from the owner, perhaps at least attempt at subtlety rather than self delusion - comparing it to "Melbourne and Sydney's fine diners" I just choked on my morning coffee with laughter when I read this!<br/><br/>"Get involved"...less with yourself!

Had a really good first impression of the place because it was very well decorated, great ambience, classy and solid furniture. Was really looking forward to trying this place out because we've heard so much about it - but we really should have gone without expecting anything at all. The macarons are priced at 3.20 per pop, and they are, for the lack of a better word, 'confusing.' they don't taste at all like their supposed flavours, you can taste a pretty strong taste of the egg white, and it's way too sweet. <br/><br/>The Creme brûlée was alright in consistency and texture, but the layer of burnt sugar on top was too thick, thus making it too sweet for a mouthful. The chai latte that we ordered tasted just like milk - and this is coming from someone who can't stand the smell and taste of cinnamon/chai, I wouldn't go near anything that tastes even remotely like chai. Needless to say, this supposed chai latte tasted ANYTHING like chai or coffee.<br/><br/>Would probably come back to give the other desserts a try, but a fair warning though, the prices are ridiculous at about AUD 15-18 per dessert. If you wanted something good and reasonable, you'd be much better off at other known dessert places around Adelaide (prices around AUD 8)

Truly amazing!. Went to Astonish last weekend with a few friends, had the cold fruit pizza with balsamic ice cream on top, it was sensational! Amber the chef told us it took her 3 days to make the puff pastry which was so yummy. Big tick for commitment to make perfect food!<br/><br/>The half baked cheese cake was equally impressive, texture was special with yummy fruit and crumble on top, which is different to any other cheese cake i had be4!<br/><br/>I read other reviews that complained about the relatively high price, but i reckon it is well worth the money as these guys run this place with heart! I see this place as one that has the potential to become adelaide's best desert bar!

Not good. The chocolate magma cake was way overpriced for what it was - plain chocolate cake with a barely molten centre and whipped cream. Black forest cake was literally just chocolate mousse with a few cherries.
MishT
Average desserts. I had the blackforest cake which was reasonably priced at $7 but it didn't have the wow factor. The chocolate magma on the other hand was overpriced at $14 and not very well made either. I have been to many other dessert places that make chocolate fondant cakes much better than this and I think the price should be cut down to at least $11 in order to compete with the other better dessert places around.

Just the way it should be. Just want to satisfy my curiosity, I went to Astonish tonight. We had panna fire, a latte and hot chocolate.I'm not a big fan of panna cotta, but that was beautiful, really. The panna cotta you can really taste the natural flavor of vanilla bean, light in texture, and the rhubarb jelly had just cut off the creaminess of panna cotta. Well balanced.good.and of course, the bomb alaska did give us great visual impact. Generally, Astonish is the way should be!,

Well we just heard about this place late in the week from quite a few different people and have been, to be honest, blown away.<br/><br/>After giving some of Melbourne and Sydney's fine diners and more renowned dessert & wine bars a good nudge in recent years, I have definitely found a new crush when it come to mixing desserts and wine in one location.<br/><br/>From the street, Astonish, looks quaint and understated, however, once you step inside, the relaxed atmosphere and cool, ambient design is the start of a great night. <br/><br/>Worth noting is the relaxed, witty yet extremely knowledgable front of house host. Some of the items on the menu appear pretty complicated, and they are, but were explained by the guy well enough that even an amateur like me can understand. The place was flat out and he was still skilled and award enough to make us feel like we were VIPs<br/><br/>So to the food ..... Apologies for the lack of vocab but .... WOW!<br/><br/>There was a fridge of some pretty cool cakes and mousse etc which look great but we bypassed that for the real magic to come out of the kitchen.<br/><br/>The menus are really well done aesthetically and professionally put together, nice touch. This includes the "main" desserts and wine list which isn't bad.<br/><br/>There were about 6 or so main desserts which all sound amazing. I had the special dessert which was an oversized proffiterole filled with balsamic ice cream, lime, caramelised banana and melted chocolate or something along those lines .. Pretty bloody good!<br/><br/>Managed to have a glass of Riesling which then turned not a bottle, loved it!<br/><br/>My friends were suitably impressed also with their bottle of sparkling Pinot and cheesecake and cheese plate.<br/><br/>We eventually left after we had became part of the furniture in the front room and left as very happy campers .... Not sure if the wine had anything to do with that or not?! <br/><br/>We will be back ... Often !<br/><br/>Get involved

Astonished.... We were walking past to buy a chocolate bar from the IGA around the corner when the front of house staff member pulled us in off the street. We decided rather than a chocolate bar we would sample the fare. We were not disappointed. The chocolate strawberry tart was devine and the warm banana cake absolutely perfect. <br/>The Chef Ember (sorry if I have this incorrect) came out form the kitchen to say hello. Quality and customer service is what drives this fine young man.<br/>What a breath of fresh air Astonish Patisserie is. You won't be able to keep it secret for too much longer.

Just went to astonish tonight with a couple of friends. I was so enchanted by the modern yet vintage decor. Not only were the desserts delicious and hand made by amber, they were all very unique and presented beautifully. The service was spectacular! The staff are so friendly and welcoming! I have high hopes for Astonish and would definitely recommend everyone to give it a go.

"Wow! "That's the only thing can say when I walk in the Astonish.<br/>The things these guys are done are very serious about dessert!<br/>You really should go to check it out and to be astonished!<br/>The price for the food is absolutely worthy! They used all fine product and house made everything

The dessert menu has been revamped and somewhat simplified with only 6 main items to choose from. To balance this, they’ve introduced a fondue, waffles, and a cheese and wine selection.

Astonish Patisserie is so close to home for me. It’s my one stop shop for late night sugar fixes.

After having lunch at Lucky Lupita's I decided to have 'dessert for dinner' and my friend chose Astonish Patisserie  from the dessert places on my food bucket for the occasion. We arrived around 7.45pm, and as Astonish don't open until 7.30pm we got a table with ease. The decor was stunning with dark rich colours, amazing unique artwork and cute books topped with tea-light candles at all the tables. A very romantic venue, perfect for a date. The waiter and waitress were both super attentive from the moment we arrived, escorting us to our table, bringing over menus, explaining the special and asking if we would like to order drinks. We decided to order a glass of sparkling wine each, the details of which escape me but I at least remember that it was a decent glass of sparkling. Being able to order a glass of wine with dessert was nice and to be honest I'm not sure why so many of the other dessert bars in Adelaide don't offer alcohol. I'm not a drinker but a good glass of wine can be pai

Astonish Patisserie is a dessert and wine bar, open mid afternoon to late. The desserts both sound and look amazing. I was pleased to see that they also offer a variety of local wines.

...the pumpkin ice cream which tasted of pumpkin and suprsingly, pumpkin as ice cream works! All in all though it was a plate of mediocrity and incoherent flavours.

Their prices might be a little on the higher side (dine in dessert ranging from $12-$18) but the quality of each dish is unquestionably high. Combine this with comfortable surroundings and friendly staff….Astonish Patisserie is on a winning formula.
On The Chopping Board
Walk into Astonish and you are welcomed with a case of different desserts - macarons, cakes, biscuits and a number of other delicious treats.  The decor reminds me of an old school Englishmans library - bookshelves, world globes, use of wood and luxurious chairs gives it that old-world charm.  The menu is split into two defined types - take away (which consists of smaller items like macarons) and then dine-in which consists of the more detailed, larger desserts.
I Only Eat Desserts
The crepes were rubbery with both the cream cheese and chocolate cakes tasting like artificial plastic. The espresso cream, popcorn and salted caramel sauce on it’s own was tasty but it was no saviour to the crepes. Oh THAT was a salted caramel macaron they gave me? I could not even pinpoint what flavour it was – I just thought it was chalk. The macaron shell was dry with most of the flavour coming from the chalky macaron shell. I pretty much left my dish untouched - I couldn’t put another mouthful in and only ate the popcorn and salted caramel sauce (that was some good salted caramel though).

De-constructed chocolate cake topped with raspberry coulis, chocolate mousse and macaron on the side.  The chocolate cake definitely needed the coulis to moisten the cake up.  Chocolate tart (70% cocoa if I'm not mistaken) with hazelnut parfait Firs

The banana cake came out first. Three slices of very moist banana cake, with the cream and caramelised banana, laid out on a wooden board. I unfortunately didn’t try the smoothie, but it was very cute, a nice little shot to follow the cake.

Astonish has been on my ‘desserts to-do’ list for far too long and last week we decided it was time to cross that bad boy off! ( And yes, I have a ‘desserts to-do’ list, what of it? ) Astonish is a fairly inconspicuous late-night haunt on King William Street down the South Terrace end, with a cute black canopy to tell you where you are. Walking into this little desserterie (yes, I made that word up) you instantly get a warm and cozy feel. The wooden floorboards, leather seats and fire place provide a welcoming winter sweet spot. My favourite part of the décor is Astonish’s library-state-of-mind. With books as far as the eye can see, this place is a paper jungle where dreams are made, oh? Wellll you catch my drift. The library vibe totally works. Now onto the service. Please don’t get me wrong here, as the two girls that served us where totally lovely, very upbeat and completely welcoming. The only problem was that they were a little too over the top. Like so over the top that we could
