Review Montezuma’s North Adelaide - Adelaide

Daniel Djakovic
Things have changed here and for the better. I have not been to Montezuma's I well ill say in a lot of years menu has changed everything is good it's all been updated a lot more to choose from definitely taste a hell of a lot better I would say if you haven't been here for such a long time because years agonies wasn't ever good.... definitely make your way here it is worth it big size meals and good portions definitely enjoyed it a lot

Good table service, food presented and tasted reasonable. Was expecting a bit more taste but really overall wasn’t disappointed with the meals. A few things were absent- Expected salt around the rim of margarita cocktails, more Mexican spice and beans? Liked the casual atmosphere and booths setup was good for couples/small groups and chatting.

Come here all the time. Food is always awesome, super friendly workers. I think I go a little too often they know my favourite place to sit and my go to order 😅

This is the worst place I have ever been, we waited for more then 25 min even if it was not busy at all, the food was looks like kept in the fridge ready for days and warmed up and served, also confirmed by the waitress. We paid 41 $ and I feel like they steal my money. Very dissapointed we should have not paid the bill. Poor quality and customer service.

Good customer service. The food was ok, my kids finished their meals and we were overall happy with our plates. I ate Mole poblano, the dish was ok but i was expecting way more flavors (it says 32 herbs and spices!). The sangria with lychees was very good. The restaurant is well decorated and there is carpark close by. There is a entertainment voucher available if you want to give a try.

I’m not writing many bad reviews but after being here and tried there food I can understand the many bad reviews this place receives on here. First the service was ok but slow but that was not the bad thing. I give this review only 2 stars because of the food that just tasted like reheated or just put on the plate and put in the over I ordered rice with chicken and some peanut sauce ( sauce Color looked so weird) you think it’s a pretty easy dish but when it arrives the waiter warned me that the plate is blazing hot ( the first sign that it’s just re-heated) after I tried the rice I noticed that the outside rice is so dry because they just put it all on the plate and stuffed it in the oven to reheat which dried out the rice completely. This is by far the worst Mexican food I’ve ever eaten and I can only say I really don’t recommend this place.
Jan Djakovic
I hadn't eaten at any Montezuma's before, s a franchise I don't normally frequent any. I was pleasantly surprised, the quality of the food is exceptional, reasonably priced, lots of variety for vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, staff are very helpful & friendly. I think I will be back with my granddaughter who loves Mexican food
Marco CHIEREGATO
One of the worst experience I’ve ever had. Very poor food quality and customer service. Not recommend

We had takeaway here during Covid. The frijoles burrito was just a wrap with rice and beans, with a side of more rice. Bland and overpriced. Would not recommend.

Hadn't had Mexican in a while and decided it was time to try Montezuma... Unfortunately I was disappointed.... They were clearly understaffed and service was slow. Food was average to my tastebuds ... the enchiladas were ok but nachos could be better ..
Kathryn Prohaska
Had a ladies lunch their there in August. Overall very VERY disappointing food. Nearly everything microwaved and not fresh.

I had the worse nachos ever!!! Hardly any topping or chips and over priced had to ask for sour cream and no avocado. I made some at home that tasted fresher and better and most probably cheaper.

Everything just looked tired and tasteless not fresh. Service slow and constantly had to ask for things or go up to desk for service. A couple of ladies had upset stomachs after lunch.

Won't go back.....

We have eaten here many times over many years and we used a birthday voucher to dine here recently: a free main course.
The restaurant is visually stimulating and we always play I Spy while waiting for our meals. I prefer to sit in a booth.
It was a busy night but the service was good.
The only negative is having to wait in line at the bar for drinks but we didn't wait too long this visit.
She had Durango and finished every scrap.
He had a beef enchilada & cleaned the plate.
I had the San Antonio nachos with a side of guacamole and only left a little.
WARNING - the plates are usually very hot.

Filtered water and glasses that are clean and don't smell like a dishwasher like most Adelaide restaurants. Tasty good priced mexican food with private booths to sit in. A restaurant feel that I have lately found is missing after most trendy diners have gone with the scandanavian design trend.

It is what it is, but if you're looking for this kind of thing, it's the best of its kind.
Chef On The Run!!
Recently went there with my friend for dinner!!
Good ambience,interiors,music has mexican feel.
Food was quite average, nothing great!!mexican beers are must try!!
TPD
For no apparent reason, I coped with a very rude bartender, giving me attitude. On top, he was incredibly unhelpful and unfriendly. We won't be back.
Rachel
We visited on a Sunday afternoon in a group of 6 for a late lunch. The restaurant was relatively busy but the waitress was really friendly and personable. She really took the time to make recommendations and take care of us. The food was high quality and filling and the restaurant colourful. We will definitely be back! A great experience.

Been here several times since couple of years ago. Still the same, nothing much has change. This restaurant presents to be very colourful from paints to all the decorations. Plenty of seats indoor and outdoor. Staffs here are quite friendly and service is fast. Food is so so. All dishes have the same flavour - maybe same sauce or ingredients but still would be nice to have some different taste. Some dishes are served with hot plate so be careful. Order the chicken with sour cream echilada - Spanish rice was cook well. Chicken with the sauce and cheese was alright nothing special. The kidney beans served was a bit too blend and mushy. There's not much seasoning on the beans except for cheese. One big let down is that there's no grilled corn - I always would order Mexican grilled corn when I dine in Mexican restaurant. Hopefully, they might add on to their menu. Desserts didn't seem very appetising - only churros on the menu. Drinks - are pretty normal nothing too special either. For a simple and fast catch up this is a good place with decent food but probably not for authentic Mexican.

Where do I start? I was looking for a great Tex-Mex Mexican Restaurant, and my God, did I find it.

In town for the day from Melbourne, we were celebrating my Son’s Birthday. We were met with a smiling greeter, taken straight to our Booth, and informed about how things operate (drinks ordered at the bar, etc….).

The girl working behind the bar was not only cheerful, but informed about the beer selection on offer.

The American guy waiting on us was prompt, but also got me to change my order, and I was glad he did.

The food arrived amazingly quickly, but I did not feel rushed.

The 4 Dip Combo was great

. My kids had either the Kids Nachos, or the Chicken Nachos, and they all announced that it was the best ever.

My wife had the Quesadilla, which she liked. The only suggestion was to offer a Vegetarian version, as the Cherizo patty was a bit too much.

Our other guest and myself opted for the Beef Burrito/Chicken Enchilada Combo. Not only was the serving ample, but the flavour was amazing.

The banter between our group, and the staff was great. The prices were great, compared to Melbourne prices. I almost wish I lived in Adelaide, so I could make this place my regular.

I can’t speak more highly of the staff here. I highly recommend it.

I love Mexican food, so I've wanted to try Montezuma's for ages but it was underwhelming. It was plain at best especially since they serve everything with this grey bean sauce/paste.
Plus, server was very blunt and seemed impatient to get us out of her hair.
Willa Bean
Cool place with a really nice atmosphere. I had the vegetarian burrito it was awesome. My friend had the vego nachos and they were great also. The frozen strawberry margarita is delish.
Shirani Shaz Williams
The reason why I'v rated this so highly is because for Mexican food it actually was pleasantly mild which pleased me.
The nachos was simple. And the enchilada was actually very basic full of beans n rice which toned down the traditional heaviness of Mexican.
The chocolate mousse for dessert was absolutely delicious and the service was great too.
Laiken
My boyfriend and I have dined here about 3 times. The first two experiences were wonderful, we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The 3rd time I had arranged a booking for us prior and when we went there they didn't have our booking down so we were sat at an average table where we had wait staff walking past us constantly and our table wasn't level so it shook. The food is good, a little bit pricey but it's similar to the other Mexican restaurants in adelaide. I do love the atmosphere as the decor makes you feel like you are in Mexico! Plus the menu is huuuuge! With plenty of veggie options!
Zoe L
Awful. If you like burnt rice maybe worth dining here. So many great Mexican places in Adelaide do not bother wasting time and money. Will not return.
Laura
So boring, dry and repetitive! It seems every meal is beans, chicken or beef with taco, tortilla or rice. None of the items appear to be made fresh; in fact, it seems like the beans were sitting there for days before being thrown onto the plate. I don't know how Montezuma's stays open.
Annie Annie
Dirty inside. Basic food and unfriendly service.. Poor service, i asked for a an extra plate, but forgot to get a spoon. When I asked for an extra spoon the look of BOTHER was all over the waitress' face, despite me being apologetic. Now the food --- BAD. Everything is pre-made stuff, layered onto different bases with different toppings, zero sophistication to the food. Can make better at home. But the single WORST thing about it is the lack of cleanliness. Tables smeared "clean". Table cloths and all sorts of hanging cloths for decoration long overdue for a clean. You could go to town spring cleaning that joint. YUK.
Adam.w.rau
Poor customer service. Whether it says using the (fully operational) eftpos machine or lecturing us that they do not offer table water, the manager made the most simple of requests seem like a hassle they did not care to assist with. The food was fine, but the service made it apparent they do not want our return business. Rest assured, management, you won't be receiving it.
Kara Turner
The poor poor mans Zapatas and the poor mans Cha Chis. Go to Zapatas if you have any sense at all. Average food. Passable if you have the entertainment book.
Annesmithsmith
DELICIOUS!!!. AMAZING!!! food was great, service was awesome and just overall had a wonderful experience! the atmosphere was lively and the decor made you feel like you were actually in mexico! highly recommend and definitely will be returning!!
Stefanie Parletta
Great meal! Fantastic service and very well priced! Chicken nachos were delicious and so authentic! Will definitely be back!! They also have great options for vegetarian, vegan or gluten free so it’s perfect for a group with lots of dietary requirements.
Muuuh_fuccka
4 out of 5 stars. Great service, great food. I'll be returning next time I'm in adelaide.
Ymmas
Not worth for the price. My partner and I having a dinner there, standard service and the seats were not comfortable. Food was not good enough, which did not worth for the price. The size of the dish was too small.
Robe0601
Disappointing!. Terrible food and average service. Give it a miss!!
Jessicapthompson
Choose somewhere else. Twice I have been here, both times where disappointing.
Food is a simplistic idea of what Mexican food tastes like. FYI: a taco, (sloppy) beans, coles shredded cheese & fake guacamole does not equal authentic Mexican food. Food always takes ages to arrive, staff are either old and grumpy or young and inexperienced, either way the service was not good.
I hope this place get's turned around, but until it does, I will be going to other Mexican restaurants.
Annabanana
Quite possibly the worst Mexican restaurant in Adelaide. Decor is terrible. Food isn't spicy enough. I swear the beef isn't beef!
Gab Laura Budbonn
To be honest shocking won't be on the return list I know Mexican can be so much better plus 42 degrees and my 20$ sangria was without ice and not very cold surely the drinks was the easy part but couldn't get that right so we should have left then shame
Nick
Thought we would give this Mexican food a go as we had a voucher,if you want authentic tasty Mexican food don't go there. The service was good but the food was so bland, ordered beef and chorizo enchilada with beans and rice I could not taste or find any chorizo and the beef was like formed hamburger mince. It was just tasteless no flavor no spice everything is cooked in huge industrial convection ovens comes out very quick but with no love.I'm glad I had a voucher and didn't pay full price as you expect a little better when you spend your hard end dollars!
Sarah
Horrible. Out of all of the beautiful restaurants on Melbourne Street I was so disappointed that an evening out was wasted on Montezuma's.
The food was terrible, well overpriced and absolutely flavourless. The rice was cold, the beans were obviously from a can, the meal was drenched in cheese that you couldn't taste. It was a chewy disaster. The service was no better than the food. I have no positive comments for this restaurant.
Mike
Terrible. What a disappointment....food was some of the worst I've ever had. Burnt dry rice and soggy enchilada.......waitress didn't even question half the food being returned.....
AJB
Not the regular good Mexican. Had to pay for extras on nachos which would usually be normally on them. Mains were average and soggy. Rice was dry. Drinks overpriced. Wouldn't go back
Wobbly Jelly
Could it be called food!?. The worst meal out we have ever experienced. The extensive decor seems to be there as a distraction perhaps trying to compensate for the bland & disgusting food. Food tasted old and reheated; yes it appears microwaved. Rice was dry & crispy, chicken (words cannot describe ) lots of cheese and no flavour! We were suspicious when our meals came out so quick, didn't rate the presentation, and after the first mouthful struggled to get much in. We left most of our meal on our plates...do you think they might get the message!? Overall we rate it as...NEVER AGAIN!! And to top it off it was very expensive for what you get.
Antonio
Nacho fiesta. Well done! 1 tequila, 2 tequila, 3 tequila ..>FLOOR!
Pedros
Friendly waitress, however this is probably the worst food I have eaten out for a long time. People should be told that nothing is freshly cooked but microwaved!!! Totally not acceptable. Don't want to spend anymore time on this place even being critical, just warning people. 1/10
Gee Rounds
Woeful. Food unexceptional, decor scared my kids, margaritas unauthentic.
Lost Kitten
Headed here for a dinner on a whim and in hindsight the emptiness of the place hinted at what was to come. Service was OK only because our waitress was friendly. Guacamole dip came out quickly and tasted alright. Mains followed almost straight after we finished. The nachos consisted of beans spread over a plate, with soggy chips, cheap cheese and a tasteless watery sauce. The beef dish was much the same, with some bland rice thrown on the side. Both were obviously microwaved with little care for presentation shown. Will not be returning.

Monte-'poo'ma's.. My partner and I were walking down Melbourne street on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm wanting to get a meal but they were not serving any more customers.... Disappointed but wanting to have a good Mexican meal, we decided to go back for dinner last night. I ordered the nachos which were flavourless, with watery salsa and cheap tasting cheese (would have appreciated some sour cream and quacamole). My partner had Chili Con Carne which was watery, almost cold and had a weird flavour to it. Really disappointing quality... Won't be going back. Not very good value for money either, with pretty small serves.
Clare Elizabeth
Value for money is shocking, the food is not exciting and is mostly from a can at really high price. never again.
Cheesy Chelsea
Funky atmosphere, confused staff. I have always loved Montezuma's for the funky atmosphere and different decor. The food has always been satisfying and the prices reasonable.
On my last visit here a couple of weeks ago, we settled in for a long relaxing night, knowing the food always takes ages because of the way it is cooked....or used to be cooked.
1. We were told we had to have a certain table (in an awkward spot) because the table opposite us was for 4. *There was 2 of us. Fine, we can cope with this.
2. I am vegetarian, my partner is not. When the mains came out the waiter just put them at the end of the table and smiled. "I dont know which one is which...are you sharing?" .....even though the meals looked way too similar, why would we be sharing? I said I needed to know which one is mine, as I am vegetarian. He returned to the kitched twice to try and find out, and then the cook/chef/microwave-operater came out from the kitchen to tell me which one was mine. Hmm.
3. The mains came out far too quickly, we had barely swallowed our dips. There is no way they could have been cooked like they used to, they MUST be microwaved. A little sloppy, but overall ok. But if it is microwaved it needs to be far cheaper. So we were in and out of this restaurant in just over an hour...our relaxing night of Mexican food and Sangria (not house-made but pre-mix - still yummy but totally different from what used to be) was over already.....
4. Please note, from the time of us sitting down and to the time of us leaving, the roomier table opposite us, was still empty.

Will we return? Unfortunately, probably not. It used to be a favourite restaurant of ours, but there are far better places now, and with much more reasonable prices. Sorry Montezuma's, you have lost some good customers.
Estygrok
Not good. The decor is good and the service friendly, so we had high hopes of a good meal. Bitterly disappointed. My beef enchiladas were filled with cheap cheese and little else - only the tiniest hint of meat, and it tasted microwaved. I couldn't eat more than half of it despite being really hungry. Honestly, staying at home and filling a tortilla with homebrand cheese and putting it in the oven would have been more satsfying. $22 for what was served. At least the side- salad was nice. My son couldn't eat very much of his chilli con carne, and I was going to fill up on it, but found it had an odd chemical-like flavour and also couldn't eat very much. Try somewhere else. There is much better Mex food available elsewhere.
Kitkat
Poor Service!. We waited nearly an hour for our entree, they weren't even very apologetic about it. When it arrived it was not very nice anyway. Then we waited again wondering where our mains were to be told 'its in the oven'. Won't be going back there again! The people who served us were not very friendly at all.
Will
What a dissapointment!. The reason restaurants exist in my opinion is to provide an enjoyable dining experience. Monte's missed the mark by a long way. The quesadillas were like a tex-mex open yiros and swimming in some watery liquid, the tacos were NOT tacos I've ever enjoyed and I don't even know where to start with the queso!!! With so many great restaurants on Melbourne St you are better off going somewhere else, not sure how this place survives. Pull your socks up Montezumas!
Lovelybone
Microwave foods, first time try it but very disappointed.

I am a regular customer and have always praised Montezuma's, sending my friends there claiming it was one of my favorite restaurants. Never again. Organized a Valentine's Day dinner at Montezuma's North Adelaide days in advance only to have our booking not listed and to be seated in a dark corner behind a column where our elbows touched the wall as we ate. Received little to no service, and even after asking to be moved to an empty booth we were ignored. Valentine's Day special cocktails took nearly a half hour to arrive. No complaints about the food but the quality of the service was so poor we are considering moving to the neighbouring Zapata's Mexican Restaurant. I was left wondering if there has been a change of management? Long gone are the days of Roller Derby chicks serving us graciously, in their place teenagers with obviously no experience in customer service. On top of everything, our voucher was refused without notice and we had to pay full fare for a below par dining experience.
Tom
Microwaved slop, even old el paso is more authentic.. Visited the restaurant this evening for a family meal and was bitterly disappointed with the quality of the food and methods of cooking.
All courses arrived with cold spots, suspiciously microwave-esque.
Every course had an extra large dribble of semi heated up refried beans.
Categorically the worst dining experience of my life, I will never visit again.
When advising staff of our concerns regarding the quality of the food, they replied "cheque or savings"
Mat Wilson
My wife and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary here after urbanspoon recommended it. Very friendly atmosphere, great customer service and the prices were less than we expected compared with other Mexican restaurants. Highly recommended with or without the children. We will be back.

Microwaved food that all taists the same no matter what u order
Moo
Microwaved food, lousy service. We went to Montezuma's for my birthday last week. We were greeted by a grumpy older man that took our orders and seated us. There were 3 of us so we chose to order different entrees and mains from each other so we could share. Tacos were ok but the ready make packs from Coles produce better tasting tacos. I had a shredded beef burrito for main that i swear to god was tuna. Everyone else on my table were sure it was tuna also. The whole dish tasted like it was microwaved and was boiling hot and sloppy. The rice was half raw and overall the service and the quality of food was really crap considering the prices we paid. Sangria was mixed and not house made, at least it didn't taste authentic house made. We won't be returning.
Famished
Hit or Miss. I have been to Montezuma's on a couple of occasions and had mixed opinions about the meals. Certain dishes are great, especially the beef ones, however I found the chicken to be on the bland side. The service is impressive, prices competitive and the sangria fabulous.
Dolce Dolce
Bland food, Bad service. Pros: The restaurant made room without a booking, which was great.
Cons: The food is bland, the service is very poor
Seating & lights: None of the seating is that good, the lights are too bright in some places and too dark in others.
Food: fairly bland considering there were spices in there. We ordered a combination of enchiladas and tacos. The serves were very small considering the cost. Sangria was pre-mixed and didn't taste very good.
Service: lack thereof, it was almost impossible to get attention from the staff even though there weren't many customers. The girl at the front seemed content playing on her iPhone.
Try the desserts, maybe the only factor that made up for the rest of it.
Snagel2508
Loved the decor, but so disappointed by the food. Would have rather had an El Paso kit at home
Cherie
Disgusting Service! Waitress took our food while we were still eating & when we said something we were told it was because they were busy & needed the table. We won't be back!
Don Chan
Ok food and ok service. Very nice atmosphere though.
Fanny Fart
Hot Cheese Baby. It's a guilty secret, but I really enjoy Montezuma's... it's not going to win awards as a gastronomic experience, and they won't take photos of the dishes to put in the next Masterchef cookbook, but it is good, hearty food to enjoy. Possibly slightly unhealthy, but then again so is most tasty stuff.
Sally Mea
Mag Margaritas. My dinner group enjoyed a great night, I ordered a selection of the mex dips which were very tasty. I then ordered a bean dish as the mains which i was lesssthan impressed with as it had little taste. One our group order the Vegan dish on offer and was delighted and enjoyed it. Others ordered the chicken which they said was nice but nothing to write home about. Overall I think that if the meal did not have chilli in it there was no other real flavor. The staff were lovely and the Margaritas were fabulous which made the food acceptable. Very reasonably priced.
Conquistador De Amor
What was everyone complaining for?. My friends said this place is a dive, but after last night I question their judgement. After being in the US for 6 months, this is as close to true Mexican as you can get. It's not pricey and the food is perfect and has generous servings. The Margaritas and Sangrias were great as well. Service was good, but the only advice was their 'hot sauce dip' wasn't hot at all.

Can't wait to go back again.
Daniel Zandona
Love the food. Something for everyone. Service provided by young Asian girl (sorry I have forgotten your name) was outstanding.
Troy And Ris
Great food and sangria - but the service is pretty dismal. It's the food that brings us back! Taquitos and beef enchilada are to die for!
Adelaidefoodcentral
I’ve been to Montezuma’s several times over the years and the menu hasn’t changed. The menu offers a range of dishes, and various combinations of those dishes.
Whattofork.wordpress.com
I had taquitos and tacos, my man had some sort of chicken tacos and they both came with the usual frijoles, rice and salad. Where do I start….the chicken unfortunately tasted boiled, frozen, microwaved and fried; and the cheese was twice melted and tasted rancid. I felt so sorry for my man because the taste of his dish made me dry reach. My dish wasn't so bad

Apart from college style mexican fare, got to admit that I have never been to a Mexican establishment before. Mostly because I am still foreign to the idea of consuming food from different countries (I was pretty much raised by Malaysian food and the occassional "western" food which included McDs and "chicken chops", fish and chips). Now that I have finally got my feet firmly grounded to blogging, I kept sourcing for different cuisines that would not only be a new experience for me but to add variety to my blog. Enough said, Montezuma's was a convenient place for me to head to and keep my blog content interesting! The entire decor is brightly coloured with sunny shades such as yellow and red which nicely depicts the Mexican culture. Combination dip~ A blend of melted cheeses, tomato dip and bean dip served with heated corn chips. All of us liked the melted cheese dip:) Durango~ chicken and sour cream enchilada, beef enchilada, beans and rice. The entire dish was quite filling as there
Gninethree
...the fact that the food did end up tasting good and the service was unexpectedly pleasant that we were very surprised with our experience. I had a good time but did leave very very full...

I've only ever had Mexican food at a legitimate Mexican restaurant once, and it wasn't particularly memorable. But having said that, it was years ago and I'm ready to give it another shot! There's gotta
