Review Red Orchid - Adelaide

Gabrielle Blair
Great location and view. The bar is fantastic (order a mango daiquiri, you won’t regret it!!). Wait staff are mostly lovely and willing to help. Unfortunately the food here is an insult. I’ve had the vegetarian pad Thai and the salt and pepper squid, both were over priced for the serving, and absolutely flavourless and awful. Such a shame! If you’re coming here, get a bowl of chips and a cocktail, and have dinner a few doors down at Estia.

The seafood was so fresh, the service was professional and they went above and beyond to serve my niece who had strict diet requirements. I had such a great meal, experience watching the sunset and enjoying the overall ambience that is Henley Square. I recommend anyone visiting Adelaide to come to the Thai Orchid.

Recently I visited the Thai Orchid Restaurant at Henley Beach on the Esplanade. There was a large family table of us and the place was full of guests. The staff were extremely efficient for service and all the meals were tasty and satisfying. As we had a table by the window, the Ocean sunset made it a beautiful experience. Would love to go again sometime 👍

Cannot fault the service - friendly and kind staff and a beautiful setting looking out across Henley jetty. Spring rolls and green curry were too yum but the pad Thai didn’t pack much of a punch. Overall, very nice dining experience

Not only is the view to the beach magnificent. Truly this restaurant is so authentic Fine food is an understatement Monday, 13 December. I had no time to cook I got home late. I came straight to the Thai Orchid. I watch the sunset whilst enjoying Thai food. I thought I was actually in Thailand on the beachfront enjoying both the sea and food at the same time Andreas Its the 19.3.22. A very warm autumn night. I went for a casual walk in the square and finished off with a cold beer in the THAI ORCHARD restaurant. As usual I was served by two beautiful young ladies at the bar. I sat down enjoyed my beer whilst enjoying the crowd outside. I truly feel like I was in Thailand and or in Athens. What a wonderful place to be in on a hot night. Andreas

Delicious coconut juice, enjoyed thai friend rice, must say that that was delicious. And had few beers while watching sunset. Good atmosphere. Chilled beers.

5 star for the view (table 10 recommend ed). Almost 4 star for the food. Black sticky rice with coconut icecream is great. Entrée mix is a good choice to try. Laksa is ok. Would come again to try the curry dishes.

Not sure why this place has such a high rating. Not awful but Very average. We had the lemongrass prawns and veg green curry - both tasted very similar and not much depth of flavour that I’m used to for Thai.

Local neighbourhood Thai in Henley Beach and it does a good job of it. Expansive seating, it looked deceptively small on the outside but it’s a tardis inside. We were warmly greeted and water brought out to us.

We ordered the Red Curry Duck and Basil Beef. Got the Coconut Steamed Rice to go with it. The curry was nice and lots of pieces of duck. Found it strange to have cauliflower in it but ate it as I enjoyed it. Pineapple and lychees add sweetness and curry is pretty mild. The beef was definitely the spicier of the two as it had chilli paste in it. Again cauliflower made an appearance with beans. The rice was of s generous size for two and was a great base to soak in all the curry and sauces.

I can see why it is a favourite amongst locals.

Unfortunately the meal our group had here tonight would go done as one of the worst Thai meals I’ve had.

Starters ordered included servings of the skewers, fish cakes & crispy prawn. Not much to mention here. The fish cakes were bland however the prawns were definitely crispy.

For mains we ordered a variety of dishes including choo chee prawn, lemongrass beef, pad thai, egg rice & sesame pork. The best dishes we had were the pad thai & prawns. The beef was hardly touched. Frankly the dish was a stoggy mess that not only didn’t look appetising to eat but the beef was drowning in the curry. The worst dish was the pork. The quality of the meat was awful. I had to ask for a knife to cut through it as it was tough as leather. Once i managed to cut through it, i was underwhelmed by how bland & tasteless the dish was.

Only saving grace was the relatively prompt & friendly service.

Great location, nice views and decent setting inside restaurant.

We started with serves of the Chicken Larb, Satay Chicken sticks, Tom Yum Soup, Lemongrass Quail, and spring rolls. The larb, satay and Tom Yum were ok, but the larb could have had more spice. The quail lacked flavour, the skin was like it had been steamed or poached leaving it soft and a little slimy not grilled as described on the menu. The spring rolls were very pale, insipid examples of a spring roll. The contents lacked any flavour if there was pork in there we couldn’t see any, and the dipping sauce didn’t add anything either. Not sure how a spring roll can be go so wrong.

For mains we had the Choo Chee Chicken Curry, Chilli Quail, Phud Thai with Prawns, Phud Mee and Drunken Noodles. I had the Choo Chee and it was the sweetest version I’ve ever had, leading me to think the base of the sauce is a sugary packet mix! The drunken noodles arrived with yellow egg noodles, we mistakenly missed this as an option on the menu, we notice rice noodles and moreover the waitress DIDN’T outline that there was an option if we had been asked we would have opted for the rice noodles. The Phud Thai was great with a truely nice flavour. However only came with 2 small prawns, the waitress stated that’s standard. I think this is really poor for a MAIN SIZE dish. You would expect at least 3-6 prawns, as a minimum! The Phud Mee was good but nothing noteworthy, the chilli quails were sweeter than expected.

Overall there was nothing glaringly bad, except for the spring rolls that were left on the table. When are spring rolls ever left on the table, really??? But there certainly wasn’t anything to write home about either. This was decidedly one of the worst Thai eating experiences we have had. There are alternatives that serve up far more authentic and flavoursome options around the area.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is not cheap Thai.

However, I found the serves to be large and of extremely high quality. We had a group of 9 and a wide variety of food from the menu. The service was pretty good too.

The position and views are extraordinarily good. Great restaurant for a special occasion or as a treat to yourself !!

The worst Thai Food I have ever eaten!! The ambiance was frantic and very noisy with chaos everywhere. The staff serving us were lovely however the manager ELIZABETH was atrocious!
The food is very overpriced for what it is. $30 for a Red Curry Duck which was a bowl of coconut cream with 4-5 slices of duck drowning in it, one small cauliflower florets and a few pieces of bamboo shoot. My Mums Lemongrass Prawns, was also more of a coconut cream soup. $10 for a few florets of broccoli. Meals came out one at a time curry but no rice then rice but no curry for another. Everyone had finished and one meal still had not arrived. Enter ELIZABETH!! Rude beyond belief. A liability to the business. Arrogant and dismissive, we decided to cancel the last meal. Rather than a polite apology she huffed off leaving us uncertain about whether she had canceled it or not. Upon enquiring Elizabeth rudely tried to excuse the complaint by saying oh well we are busy. As I explained to Elizabeth.. if She cannot manage a busy restaurant don’t book it. The bill was $150 ! For terrible food and horrible management. If Elizabeth is not the business owner then the owner really needs to think about replacing the Manager. Henley Beach is stunning so this restaurant gets a free ride with customer volume, in a side street it would struggle. Eventually Elizabeth told us not to come back which was the final motivation to actually leave a review and hopefully widely advise people to go somewhere else where you can get good food, good service and a beautiful setting.
The price is extremely overpriced and unecessarg, in my personal opinion I think it shouldn't be worth the price that I paid for. The lemongrass chicken was soaked in a bath-tub and flavourless soup and was as bland as it could get. The only memorable dish I come close to like is the peanut chicken and it was consumed with the overpriced rice that was quite soft and wet.
Overall I didn't like it at all and didn't enjoy the dishes. Would not recommend it to new comers but regular visitors may disagree with my opinion

The venue is in a prime position and that is where it ends. The food is average at best, we ordered with two other couples and the entrees could not come out together with 10 mins between all being placed on the table, when my wife got her soup she advised it was not the Galanga soup she ordered but she got told that is what she ordered(funny my wife would not have ordered something that she was allergic too.!) When the mains came out they again could not get all the dishes out together and my dish needed two prompts to waitresses to ask them wher it was. The chilli chicken was not even worth the wait very average food all round. The venue is extremely noisy as around a table of 6 you really could not hear what your friends were saying other than shouting it out. When the bill came out they could not even get the correct bill for the table again when we asked for the right one ( which was more than the one we received) they questioned it. When I went up to pay you do not even get a question of how was your meal just grab the card and put it through the eftpos machine. No care, no service no good food.

Thai Orchid is situated in the prime position of Henley square so you'd think it must be pretty impressive. From the outside you aren't sure what to expect but once you go inside you'll quickly realise that this is no traditional Thai restaurant. I guess you could describe it as a dining hall serving Thai food. Tables are packed full of diners eating stock standard Thai cuisine. The service at times is poor but that's because they are so busy and there are so many people. Because they are in an amazing location I think they draw the tourist crowd during the summer months. The food is nothing special and there are loads of other restaurants offering similar cuisine in the western suburbs that I would return to before heading back here.

Went to Thai Orchid restaurant last night for the first time- table for 2 seated quickly without reservation even though the restaurant was packed! Prompt friendly service with great view of the sunset. The food - pad Thai was disappointing (bland- even for a pad Thai!), with minced chicken and literally one single prawn. Choo Chee chicken curry was much better; good flavours but really nothing to rave about. Good serving size of both. Price reflects the location/view but won't be in a hurry to return- for me food takes precedence above all else!

Quick takeaway service. Dreadful food. Fried rice consisted of oil and egg, I'm not joking. Steamed rice I could lift out in one lump out of container. Tasteless, oily Pad Thai, the only saving grace was that the Massaman Beef Curry was tender, but for $18.90 it should be. Steer clear and head to Chinatown.

Not impressed. Service was quick but it was all over the place. Asked by 3 different waitresses if we wanted drinks.. then again if we were ready to order.. etc.
The food.. nothing special but generous serves and decent prices.

Very tasty, good quantity. The view is nice (when not under contruction outside!) and the service pretty efficient. Highly recommend the beef massaman and the duck and lychee curry! Yum!

My fav Thai place is all of Adelaide. Ambience is quite old school however food is amazing and every dish hits the spot. Staff are friendly and efficient. All food is reasonably priced and large servings. Location is perfect when the sun is setting with a nice few of Henley square. Highly recommend.

Awesome pad Thai.. had the green chicken curry.. and it was so tender.. really enjoyed the food.. keep up the good work..
definitely will be back..
The best thai food I have ever had. My favourite restaurant in Adelaide. The menu has lots on offer and the food is always delicious. The prices are quite affordable, the staff are very attentive and food is served pretty quickly. We find that it is best to share a variety of different dishes between everyone on the table instead of having one all to yourself. My favourites are the vegetarian spring rolls, red chicken curry, beef in peanut sauce, pad thai and fried rice with egg and soy. This is quite a casual restaurant, situated right on the beachfront and it seats a lot of people so most of the time I find that we can get a table even if we haven’t booked in advance.

Not sure what it is but its not food. If the colour of the sauces or the quantity of the sauce or even the bits of 'stuff'that shouldnt be on your dish ie octopus in a beef salad is not enough to scare you and make you run from this place before eating, then the subsequent stomach upsets you experience for the rest of your night will make you wish you had! This is Not Thai food but I couldnt determine what it was exactly! Im writing my review listening to my complaining belly back to the bathroom again!

Best Thai I've had in ages! Everything was spot on. I love a red Thai curry and I couldn't fault this one but even better was the beef with lemongrass and coconut. It's like a lemongrass version of the red curry! Amazing! Also ordered pad Thai as a bit of a staple...best pad Thai I have ever had! So full of flavour. Reasonably priced as well. $64 fed 4 of us easily. Brilliant takeaway Thai!

Thai Orchid is wilting. I really don't know why people love this place so much. It must be for the views? The lovely service? Or maybe the portion sizes? The food tastes like it's been frozen, defrosted and thrown onto a plate with some 1/2 day old rice, then drowned in some more coconut cream.
George..
Great pad thai. . Luv it..

Good food and good service. Dropped in for a quick meal one night after work. Food is tasty and service is good.

Rediscovered Thai orchid a few weeks ago and I am pleased to say they have definitely upped their service and quality of food. The waiters were very informative, they knew their products and didn't even need paper or pen to write down orders. Food came out quickly and very tasty. Have not has a curry that tasty in a long time. Very happy and will definitely go back time and time again.

My partner and I live within walking distance of Thai orchid- it Is by far our favorite restaurant in Adelaide! It has amazing views, amazing staff, amazing food and an amazing wine list. We hardly ever eat out anywhere but Thai orchid these days as we are massive foodies and are yet to find another restaurant who even comes close to the quality!

Beautiful food, good service and warm atmosphere. We will be returning.

I get the 'green curry chicken' takeaway here on a regular basis. One serve is enough for two people. Packs a decent punch, delicious, and prepared within 20mins. Haven't dined in.

I took my wife to Thai orchid for our wedding anniversary as Thai is her favourite food and this looked like a top location on a warm summers night on the beach to dine. We were rushed in sat down and has three waitresses ask for drinks and to order within the first five minutes. The couple next to us were approached as they finished their mains with the hurry up's, leaving the wife asking the husband if he thought that was rude to be treated like that. We ordered and my wife's entree of spring rolls arrived. Both of us tried them and were very disappointed, they consisted of just pork and cabbage. I asked the waitress and she confirmed. Just pork and cabbage. Our mains were average and we were soon rushed out by the staff. Not a nice experience, especially on our anniversary, so we got an ice cream and had a laugh at our dining experience as we walked along the beach.

The best value banquet in town and super tasty thai.

Well .... Good thing the view is very good.
The service was attentive in the first 30 mins, so entree arrival & drinks order lulled us into false sense of contentment ...
One of the main courses didn't arrive until well over 30 mins of the others; which decreased the enjoyment for the rest of us, as we politely waited & waited and our food cooled. (Note: due to varying preferences we weren't sharing.)
Some anxiety may have been smoothed-over by the opportunity to order more drinks; but where was the staff?? We asked about the missing meal; but there was very little empathy.
This meal was highly anticipated; as we gathered to farewell a friend to Melbourne, ... however the service was so disappointing, it spoiled the any joy of food that did arrive in a timely manner.
Good thing the company was excellent !!
(What would this establishment have to offer if the weather was inclement ?)

Haven't been here for years and it has changed. I've been to alot of thai restaurants locally and nationally, this place is not worth another visit...unless your desperate to dine thai food around henley square. Seriously go elsewhere!
Food quality - just average. Food went cold couple minutes later.
Price - overpriced, Chicken Eggplant Curry for $18 w/out rice. Not worth the quality and taste of the food. Quite coconut milky! Fried rice was bit of soy sauce and bit of egg mixed in. One waitress said it wasn't fried rice, so we (6 of us) waited.... 20min later 2 waistresses came with the same thing and argued it is fried rice! Interesting.
Service - pretty bad! My friend got ignored when she wanted to order another drink. Wow!
My reservation booking was never recorded as well.
We gave them customer feedback. The old lady behind the counter said because we didn't have a banquet, that's why they didn't come around again to serve drinks. Hmm
Come again? - No.
Aok
OVERPRICED. Overpriced thai crap service was terrible order was stuffed up never again

The best Thai in Adelaide. Dined here many times. Such exquisite food. Always waddle out very content. Then slowly walk off my meal along the jetty as the sun goes down. Just a perfect dining experience.

Great Food Biiiiiiggggg Serves. I was soooo full and I only got half way through my meal.
Great table service-the waitress remembered everyone's order without writing it down (and I went with at least 12 other people)
Excellent Meals- everyone was really happy with their chosen dish

I love this place. Wonderful location and beautiful food. The chilli beef and duck red curry are two particular favourites of mine. Good service and it doesn't take very long to reach the table. Nothing but good things to say.
Noelene
Average. Maybe it was our choice of meals but the Pepper egg Prawn & the Snapper fillet with chili was nothing like any Thai dish i have ever had, way too much coconut sauce and had the consistency of thickened cream. I will say that the stir fry chinese broccoli was a winner, very generous serve.
There are much more authentic Thai eateries in Adeleaide, i will probably give this one a miss next time!
Lsmi
Best Thai in Adelaide hands down.

I LOVE this place. I have been here many many times and it's never failed to leave me feeling satisified and yummy. The meals are delicious and the service is fantastic. It can get a bit busy though, which obviously slows down service, but that's expected. It is located at beautiful Henley Square and is overlooking the beach. Definitely my favourite Thai restaurant in Adelaide.

Nice food & service. The staff was quick with deliver.I recommend the quality of food here.

I used to like this place, nice location etc..However this one time they just served below average food and the service was bad as well.. Lost faith since then..I will rate maybe 5 out of 10

The Thai Orchid is situated in such a fantastic location, within Henley Square and facing the sea. The restaurant has two dining areas, the main indoor dining area and semi-indoor dining area.

I think I have found my favourite Thai restaurant in Adelaide. Lucky we made a booking as the restaurant was packed. It is situated in the best location, literally facing the beach.
