It's not often that you walk into a cafe and feel like you stepped right into your grandmother's sitting room, but this is the emotional response that the owners of The Drop In Cafe in Boronia wanted. This small space is decorated in an eclectic manner, with mismatching furniture and crockery, and ornaments everywhere. It lends a sense of fun and cosiness that instantly makes you feel at home. The fact that it was a full house when we visited, and the locals greeted each other by name, suggests that this is the local hang out for many people; and with it's friendly vibe I can understand why.

The menu is quite different to your usual standard cafe fare, with some interesting concepts that worked really well. We started with the turmeric eggs, and this golden scramble came served with a heap of homemade roti bread and fruit chutney. The chutney added a touch of sweetness to this savoury plate, and the creamy eggs worked so well with the crispy bread.

We finished with the berry crepes, and these yogurt filled crepes not only looked amazing, they tasted divine. The crepes were perfectly light and the abundance of berries made it a generous dish.

The Drop In specialises in tea, although coffee is also available. However, with so many varieties on offer, we stepped away from our usual coffee and tried some of the gorgeous teas. The blue pea blossom tea was fantastic, and I loved that it turned purple when you added lemon juice. We also tried a hibiscus flower tea, and this pretty pink tea was also refreshing and tasty. The way the teas were presented was so beautiful, and it made the whole experience even more fun.

With a large selection of home made cakes available, and high teas available to be booked; the tea experience is definitely at the heart of this cafe. With such passionate owners, fantastic food and the cutest location; stopping by The Drop In Cafe is like visiting family, and you will feel so comfortable that you will find it difficult to leave.

Discovered this gorgeous little local cafe in Boronia, where we had a truly amazing experience.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the owner, Alpa, and I immediately felt at home. Just one glance around and I fell in love with the unique decorations and Bohemian vibes - a small but very cosy and welcoming little place.

They offer breakfast and lunch, beautiful high tea, a cake range that’s complete home-made, and an extensive list of specialty teas that’ll make any tea-lover’s dream come true.

We opted for breakfast and had the Turmeric Eggs, the Fritters (which were on special) and the French Crepes with Berries+Yoghurt.

The Turmeric Eggs were delicious! The scrambled eggs were very fluffy and a vibrant yellow colour from the turmeric, which was lovely and not overpowering. I loved the crispy Malaysian roti and chutney which I think complemented the eggs really well.

The Fritter on special, which came with smoked salmon, was probably my favourite dish of the day. The corn fritters were the perfect texture - crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and not too heavy nor doughy. The corn added a nice pop of sweetness too, and the smoked salmon was delicious.

Finally, the French Crepes made the perfect sweet ending to our meal. The crepes were incredibly delicate, light and fluffy - it was honestly amazing. The yoghurt added a nice creaminess and tartness, along with the fresh raspberries, and some added texture from the granola. I really loved that the dish was not too sweet at all - instead it was very light and refreshing! My kind of dessert!

For drinks, we tried the Betjeman & Barton Fruits Bambou tea and the Butterfly Pea Flower tea. The fruity tea was so lovely and my favourite of the two. I also had an almond latte and I can confirm that the coffee here is amazing too.

The Drop In is definitely worth a visit!

Thank you so much for having us!

A hidden gem in Boronia!

From the moment you walk into the Drop In cafe, you know you are stepping into somewhere different. The decorative pieces are a combination of kitsch, whimsical, retro, classical with lashings of pop culture moments. Each trinket and piece of serving ware 'shouldn't' would not go together, but they do. Mismatched, but cohesive.

We were treated to a high tea for two. For the price point, this was incredibly good value. The high tea platter maintains its traditional fare but with added twists. I understand that menu items vary based on what's in stock, which means there is innovation. It would be unfair to specify what I did have, because you might not get them the next time.

The tea selection however, is consistent and extensive. As mentioned, the servingware is quite the treat.

I also took home a vanilla slice for my friend's parents and they loved it. Creamy vanilla filling, flaky pastry. One of the better vanilla slices they've had.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Drop In as much as I did, but it's definitely worth a visit. In an food scene where High Tea can get feel dated, the Drop In stands out.

"It’s just a jump to the left. And then a step to the right"….

I felt like I’d stepped into a time warp while in Boronia this week. Admittedly, I am a dreamer, so when I discover a café that has me reflecting on the beauty in history, and traditional hospitability, I revel in it.

The ‘Drop In Café’ in Boronia does exactly this, and it’s all thanks to Alpa Patel. Alpa was inspired by her grandmother, when as a child; Apla remembers her being the provider of a home that was open to all, with cakes waiting to be devoured, and the aroma from large pots of masala chai infusing the room.

The Drop has a Parisian, eclectic, and bohemian feel, with an eclectic mix of collectables and treasures from the yester-years.

Homemade cakes presented under vintage cloches adorn the display cabinets, and a drinks trolley holds the range of alcohol beverages on offer.

The menu presents a simple yet wholesome breakfast and lunch menu, as well as High Tea. It’s ingenious, considering the venue has no commercial kitchen, and Alpa is known to use produce brought in from locals.

Think Turmeric Eggs served with crispy Malaysian roti; and ‘Mexicorn’ fritters with house taco seasoning. I couldn’t resist the Butterfly pea flower tea, which had a theatrical twist.

The Drop is more than a café. It’s a healing space, with lots of heart, and an operator who treats it like her home. No wonder I lost track of time here!

It’s always a pleasure to be welcomed into a homely café where the owner speaks so passionately and proudly of the food they present to their happy customers. The epitome of this was our visit to The Drop In Café, Boronia. Despite the 1.5 hour trek from the Melbourne city area, the cosy vibes, antique – styled, eccentric décor of this café, and of course, the warm hospitality of the husband and wife owners, certainly made it all worth it.

Been here yesterday. The coffee is probably the best I've had in Boronia. A spicy fried rice and all served up in a very homely atmosphere. Menu seems to change apparently so I'll be sure to drop in again. Thanks!

Go here semi frequently. Two schnitzel sandwiches, chips and two drinks are about $35. Not bad. Sangers are great and everything cooked fresh to order.

Recommended by a friend, so called in today to have a large flat white. Very friendly service and the coffee was very nice, you must check this wonderful little place out. Looks like some delicious items on the menu that I am keen to try out next time. Probably the crepes. Special thanks to Maddi for looking after us so well. Looking forward to experiencing again the character and charm that this little cafe exudes. Give them a try... Well here I am again, this time for a delicious coffee and a delightful scone with jam and cream. Fantastic service again, well worth a try.
