Review Soul Bistro - Brisbane

Karen R
What a gem! Really delicious food - different flavours and textures, and Terry's Hong Kong influence shines through - friendly service, casual vibe, good portion sizes, BYO with a bottle shop just around the corner, very good pricing and lots of parking make Soul Bistro a winner! We opted for the Tapas and Dessert option. The different mixture of flavours was amazing! The fried pork belly was to die for, Asian nachos was a delightful twist on the standard nachos, and the creme brulee rivalled the best I've tasted in French restaurants. Terry believes in using fresh, readily available produce and the tastes confirm that. We'll be back, again and again!

The tapas were reasonable and the chocolate brownie was nice. Note that the $10 Sunday tapas do not extend to the tapas on the specials list. The staff were receptive and the owner friendly.

This place is a gem. The food was great and you can tell the chef puts effort into his dishes. All the combinations are so interesting! The lychee lemonade drink was very good too, though coffee is probably not their strength. Definitely coming back again.

A wonderful brunch experience, with fantastic Chinese and Malaysian fusion food. This char siu pork mini waffle dish with spring onion scrambled eggs was absolutely delicious! Excellent service too, and very affordable! $10-14 for most the specials

Going to miss this place a lot when it closes. The food here is far better than anything I've ever had.

We recently dined there with a large group and I would like to thank Terry who was going out of his way to accomodate us with his Set Menu which offered a range of delicious choices for every budget. The food arrived promptly and was nicely presented, super tasty and you can tell he is very passionate about his cooking. We will definitely be back to try his breakfast Menu, too!

The reason I gave this rating is although the service was good, but- its all DEEP FRIED Chicken, if you don't mind EXTRA oil in each bite then its fine. From health point of view I will certainly not recomend.

Popped in for an impromptu date night dessert, one week after Covid19 restrictions eased. Lovely little place to discover! The owner encouraged us to eat in if we were having the Chocolate Brownie dessert and he proved to us why, it came out as a sizzling sensation with the fudge sauce bubbling underneath the brownie and icecream, most surprising and unexpected, and deliciously yum! There's not too many places around Brisbane to have a nice little "dessert out" at, but this place is definitely a "need to go back" to try more kind of place! The meals sound great too and reasonably priced, so will be back for sure.

Soul Bistro has become my favourite go to place for a meal in Brisbane :) Creative menu, friendly staff, well priced, easy parking. Gluten free and vegetarian options as well, so something to suit most people. Consistently positive feedback from all the friends and work colleagues I've met here for lunch or dinner.

We went to Soul Bistro on Sunday night for a birthday dinner. I am paleo and the chef was amazing and catered to my dietary needs The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The waitress was very attentive and knew her job well. We will definitely be back again.

The whole package...tasty food, great service, low prices...and lots of gluten free dishes that are actually gluten free. My favourite restaurant. Have been here many times now.

Always walked past and wanted to go in because the place looks so welcoming. Went in on a Friday night, terry, the owner, was so friendly, happy to provide us with ice, glasses for my wine and put my boyfriends beers in the fridge (it’s byo). We got many tapas dishes because everything sounded so wonderful, and everything was! Just an amazing place to go for date night or even delicious food with friends or family. Thanks terry!

Duck and mushroom risotto, pot-roasted lamb, Portuguese chicken, BBQ pork: just as good as a takeaway as the meals were when served on site. All the meals have a little or more fusion quirk about them that always made the Soul a great place to eat at.
The prices are low, and at that rate it is well worth grabbing a few meals for the freezer too.

Just as important, keeping up the purchases would keep a wizard chef and great restaurant host in business.

Had a lovely dinner here with friends last night. Food was amazing and the waitress was lovely. The chef also came out to see how our meals were which was nice too. Can’t wait to come back with my husband as there are so many more yummy things on the menu!

Breakfast, tapas, desserts. All absolutely delicious, creative and elegantly presented. The owner is a very kind gentleman with a good sense of humor! Have visited many times in 2018, I need to get back there soon, 2019 is going too fast!

The pork belly bao was very good. I've never had a pork bao that's failed me before and I'm glad that this one did not break that pattern. The kingfish salad was also nice and light, and my friend, who is not a big fan of fish, actually liked it.

I loved how the brownie was served in a sizzling hot stone pan. That unique twist on a classic dessert put it miles ahead of the brownie I had at La Dolce Vita later that night.

Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed with the service. We ordered everything together, but the pork bao came 10-15 minutes after everyone else's dishes, while the kingfish salad came out 20 minutes after the bao. Furthermore, we were told that the dessert would take 10-15 minutes to be ready but waited nearly 30 minutes for it.

5/5 for food, 2/5 for service. Overall 3.5. Might come back here for their lunch special.
FOODIE ADVENTURE
As soon as we got there we were instantly greeted by Terry so was soo lovely and welcoming. It was like he stepped into his house. He took us through the menu very patiently. We got the homemade lemonade Lychee, mint and lime was very refreshing. For the kids we choose beef and bacon burger and white fillet and chips. My daughter who is a very picky eater was able to demolish her plate.

You can tell when a chef cares about the food thats on the plate. The dishes were filled with passion but not over the top like you might find at other fusion restaurants. The food was balanced, the flavors, the size, everything had a place or it just wasnt on the plate. For entree we had the bulgogi pork belly bao and ginger and lemongrass prawns. What a great start. So mush flavour in each dish. For mains we ordered the honey chili maryland duck and sirloin steak with king prawns. Again everything was perfect. Perfect medium rare steak. The duck actually stole my husband's heart. He was soo in love with his meal.
For dessert we decided to share the creme brulee and the kids had ice cream which was included in there kids meal. Our creme brulee was lovely. Perfect way to end our dinner.

What honestly makes this place amazing is Terry. Not only does he cook the meals but we saw him actually delivering the meals himself to the tables. He was such a sweet and humble guy. He had quite a few return customers while we were there. For sure we will be back as well.

Owner chef Terry Leung has been offering diners an exceptional dining experience for almost a decade at his restaurant Soul Bistro in Milton. Personable and extensively experienced in Asian cuisine, Terry’s enthusiasm and flair shines through in the modern Asian dishes he personally creates.

We immediately cooled down with the house made lemonades. The flavours were interesting and we decided upon the Lemon with Rosemary and Mixed Berry and Sarsaparilla. Both were refreshing and delicious.

To start, we ordered the Bulgogi Belly Pork Bao and Asian Nachos from the tapas menu to share. The steamed baos, soft and pillowy housed the pork belly, smoked and tender, dressed with a spicy Korean soy sauce. Most memorable was Terry’s twist on the more traditional nachos. We couldn’t get over the light, crispy texture of the fried wonton skins and the tasty chilli chicken sambal.

For mains, my dining buddy ordered the Beef Brisket, deliciously flavoured with a Middle Eastern spice and served with a spiced cous cous. My diced salmon in Terry’s special sauce, accompanied by a light salad was tasty and cooked to my liking.

For dessert, the Sizzling Chocolate and Almond Brownie is a firm favourite among Terry’s patrons. Served with butterscotch ice cream, macadamia pralines and a warm chocolate fudge sauce, we could understand why! We also shared a delightful dessert platter which included coconut puffs with yuzu, cranberry and chai seed biscuit crumb and mango spiced up with a hint of chilli.

In summary:

The menu is appetising, affordable and innovative.
Service is quick and friendly.
The café is tucked away in a central location and has a nice atmosphere.

Bneeats was an invited guest of Soul Bistro; all opinions are our own.

Time to update my last review here so Phuong Tran and I walk in at 1pm. Owner Terry who is busy tending to the tables and the kitchen greets us and provides us with menus and cold water. We select a meal off the Lunch Board, two share plates and two cold drinks; Iced Lemon Tea and Iced Cinnamon Latte at $1 each.

*Beef Burger ($14) comes with salad and hot crisp chips. This meal is nicely presented and the beef pattie is nicely seared making it a delicious meal.

*Bulgogi Pork Belly Baos ($10) is served with a spicy Korean sauce and pickled wongbok. Plenty of tender tasty pork belly which hits the spot.

*Cumin Lamb Tenderloin ($10) is really tender and the apple and pumpkin yoghurt complements the sliced lamb.

A nice lunch with Terry entertaining us with tales of his passion for food. Thank you Soul Bistro.

We took a detour to Milton, and set our stomachs loose on a brunch spot with a unique twist to the usual menu items. First, we had to try out their housemade lemonade, at only $5 it is a great value! (also a nice range of flavors). The berry, and poached apple frappe was a nice way to start the day. … and of course I needed a coffee, I haven’t had one yet and it was already almost noon 😂.

Last Saturday was a busy day for Adam and myself, after an early breakfast at Newstead, we headed over for an early lunch at Soul Bistro at Milton to meet up with a couple of friends and try out their weekend brunch menu. . Owner Terry was super friendly, with a contagious enthusiasm. He showed us to our table and also provided menus. Options were vast and aplenty. He explained how he enjoyed adding his own fusion twists to traditional menu items, and we could definitely see that from the menu.
Spice Is Life
Dined on a Saturday morning. Terry greets us with a warm smile as soon as we walk in. It was a hot morning so we were seated indoor with air conditioning. We were asked straight away what beverages we would like to start with, I ordered a latte and my wife had the lemonade of the day (delicious and highly recommended!)

For my meal I chose the Breakfast Pork Belly Burger ($18). This was a served on a huge piece of Turkish bread, served with 2 eggs, double cooked pork belly, haloumi and cinnamon apple mustard and molasses. Every bite was an explosion of flavours and truly a unique twist to the usual pork belly burger. Definitely keen to go back and try Terry’s take on different dishes.

I would give it 6 out of 5! Very cozy environment, friendly staff and owner, food was excellent! I can tell chief is passionate and creative, the fusion of Asian food and modern Australia was amazing, lots and lots WOW factors! Me and my friend pre ordered Terry’s special meal on Tuesday night, it’s like a chief set menu for customers, beautiful presentation and wonderful food, very descent portion, and the ladies got complementary flowers which really surprised us! Definitely will come back and recommend!!

Not a part of brissy I normally go to but went cause of the decent reviews. Arrived around lunch and everything on the menu seemed a bit risky with their I guess cuisine fusion and the breaky options seemed more to my liking. When I was seated I got served chilled tap water straight up which every place really should do. Ended up being pretty good although a bit high on the price for my serving size. Although other peoples’ meals looked better proportioned. Will definitely have to come back.

Well, I’ll be - the little delights that you find in Milton - while the location feels like they have fenced off part of the car park - the food selection, variety and presentation is a delight! BYO solves the wine issue. For what it is and the price, it’s a 5. They have managed to separate out an area that allows you to eat in comfort surrounded by plants high enough to at least provide some privacy while you eat - but the gym junkies punching each other during their work outs beside you adds an interesting atmosphere. But back to the food - brilliant - daily specials that are delightful and that add to a menu full of flavour and fun - make sure you have the boiling chocolate soaked brownie for desert - if they still have it - the price is also excellent if you are looking for an easy, surprising and quick option - this is the place.

We had such a lovely time here. Food is amazing - we ordered 15+ plates of tapas for 10 people and it all came out together. Great idea for a larger group. Unfortunately the staff were extremely rude otherwise this would have been 5 stars!
Vina
I give 3 of 5 only because the staff was so friendly and nice. She was so cheerful and handy. I got a cup of coffee (long black) with a cake (cumquat and almond) for $6.50 (additional discount if you are a student (10%)). The cake was unique. It was sour yet sweet. It could be delicious if only it was abit more moist. The cake was so dry. I am not sure why the store was rated so high, probably have to try their main menu.

We dropped in prior to an 8.30pm movie session. Menu was broad and tantalizing. Will go back just to sample the other dishes. Modern Australian fusion of interesting combinations of flavours and textures that worked. Relaxed casual BYO with friendly attentive staff. Excellent value for money.

Relaxed and casual dining at this outlet which has a fantastic rating for 72 reviews. Can't quite get to 4.6 but not far off. it's the menu stupid as a man once didn't say - eclectic and a pleasure to read and eat - all well executed - though a tad heavy. Nice outdoor precinct - we followed Soul Bistro from its former location and this is better. Come down here - you will find something for yourself.

Back to Soul Bistro and very pleased with the beautiful food. The prawns and chicken sensational. Get there. Not a complex or ornate setting essentially footpath dining but the menu, food, and execution outstanding...leaves many overpromoted outlets bobbing in its wake. Happy waitstaff without issues or hauteur who let the product do the talking.

Today my partner and I were looking for a place to have lunch and after seeing they had some vegetarian and vegan options we decided to give it s try.

We had the steamed bbq pork bun, beer battered potato and onions, peas risotto, sizzling vegetable laksa and vegetarian gyoza.

The first dish to come was the bbq pork bun, it was a bit dry which is weird for a steamed bun, but the stuffing had a good bbq flavour to it. For 2 dollars it's not too bad and I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5.

The next to be served was the beer battered potatoes and onions. This dish had a nice seasoning to it, maybe lacking just a bit of salt but nothing that made it unpleaseant. The potatoes seemed a bit dry and the dipping sauce that was served together had a strange flavour to it that none of us enjoyed. Would rate it a 3 out of 5.

The peas risotto was not visually impressive and tasting it was also not special. The peas tasted like frozen peas, and it was lacking salt, seemed like the kitchen staff totally forgot about it. Taste wise it was not bad but wasn't outstanding. Wouldn't order again. This one deserves a 2.5 or 3 out of 5.

The sizzling vegetable laksa was indeed sizzling and it was quite a show when served, unfortunately the laksa didn't have enough depth of flavour and the vegetables seemed overcooked and not necessarily fresh. Also the rice that was served together was dry. Would rate a 2.5 out of 5.

And finally, the vegetarian gyoza is hard to review this dish as I couldn't really understand the flavours in this dish but was probably the best of the last three dishes we had. Would rate it a 3 or 3.5 out of 5.

Overall I won't be in a rush to come back to this place.

I had a really bad experience here. I decided on trying some of the tapas dishes and was disappointed with all of them. Some of the dishes I couldn't even eat. The only positives of the night were the excellent service and the nice homemade lemonade.

Who rated this joint for 4.7?
Nothing special about this joint. I'm disappointed. People, somehow this joint ended with 4.7 but only friends are rating then. I'm sorry.

Soul bistro had a great friendly atmosphere our waitress and the owner were both all to happy to tell us about the different options they had on the menu. The tapas plates we shared are probably the best I've had!
Andrew
Soul Bistro is tucked away in the Milton shops, it has outdoor and indoor seating. As soon as we arrived we are offered indoor air conditioned seating, which we excepted happily. The menu is diverse and you can choose between a breakfast/ brunch menu or Tapas with dishes $10. We decided on some tapas and choose chicken and prawns San choi bowl, crispy spicy fried chicken and Haloumi, mint and carrot fritters, yes a very diverse menu of taste and flavours. It was almost a mix of Deep South US and Asian influences, but it works. I would also recommend the sweet potatoe in soy bean batter, really great as a side. All the dishes had there own dipping sauces and they were really flavorsome. With great service and a nice relaxing feel, this is a great little place to eat and enjoy some great diverse tastes.

We were greeted by the owner who sat us under the aircon. He presented the specials in a very informative and comprehensive way. He clearly understands and cares about his food.

I ordered the sticky lamb ribs with a cinnamon pear & pistachio salad. The ribs were so tender and full of flavour! The cinnamon pear salad was a great accompaniment to balance out the flavours.

The creme brûlée was great also but not as smooth as others I've had. It still had a nice flavour and consistency though.

With how familiar I am to Terry Leung's prospects and projects in making great food, it is inevitable that many comparisons to his ventures will pop up in discussion. Therefore, as a beginning point I will definitely say that it needs no introduction from me, Soul Bistro in Milton. The long story short of it is that it lives up to expectations.

Looking past the end of an era, finally graduating from university, it was several weeks beforehand that I knew which place I wanted to get to for the celebratory meal. It had been on the wishlist for quite some time, and it was more or less locked in as the the place to get to - none other than Soul Bistro. From the brainchild behind Food & Soul - which I had had many great meals at - the sheer inventiveness, and lack of subtlety with full on flavours being chosen and weird combination, it appealed to my taste buds like nothing else. A few days before the event, I booked into the restaurant then got a confirmation call a couple of days later - a table for 5 - and it was all smooth sailing from there. Those people were me, my parents, my dining buddy, and an old family friend.

It is right on the close end of the Centro Milton to the main road, digging itself a small pocket in the corner which in turn gives it some space and character. For the shop area, it is pretty small in size, and it does have a charming aesthetic to it with the golden hues. Where most of the action takes place, it is in a well made courtyard, sectioned off by a few trees and pot plants. Fairly lights were strewn around which was appropriate on the lead-up to Christmas. Overall, the simple choices give it a charm of its own.

On what was otherwise another example of brilliance that is characteristic of Terry, under his helm was a waitress that was not awful but boy did she have some improvements to make with conduct. That is not to say she was unfriendly in any way, in fact she definitely was not. I do like to give the benefit of the doubt from the start, and at least she did not look like she would rather be elsewhere. However improvement has to be made since the technical service from this young lady was inconsistent. While clearing the table, she would often take some dishes and leave some, often not coming back for ages, having some dirty ones right in the middle of the table. Lots of really busy places manage to get the whole lot cleaned in one or two swoops, and this was leisurely at best with how busy it was. I say all this because with training it could actually be alright.

Now we get onto why this is such a dear place. It is all about their menu, and how unconventional it is. This could easily charge the world per head, but instead it is at a reasonable level, and won't harm the wallet too much. With the original Food & Soul, it was a full three-course meal that you could get there. It is kind of possible here, but for the most part the focus is a lot more like tapas than anything. They have smaller and bigger tapas, which often take a well known finger food and create a new way to present it, or find another kind of food to combine and make it seem unique.

The bigger plates, which are essentially main meals, go like most high-end restaurants do and have something each of several meats. Again, innovation, twists in presentation and all that are present, which makes it even more memorable. This goes onto the desserts and sides as well. Nothing is left without love.

If that weren't enough, every day there is a good lunch menu out the front all for a good steal and the range is often wholesome and plentiful. These are made to be a complete meal, as they are offered with a drink on the side by default inclusive in the price. Then there is the breakfast menu on the weekend, which offers a small range that is anything but conventional (thank goodness) and is easy on the wallet. Less about setting trends, and more looking stylish - this is the kind of breakfast place I like to seek out.

Last but not least comes in the drinks menu. Even this is not abandoned in getting that signature flair. The usual suspects of tea and coffee are here, as well as milkshakes, fresh juices and the usual rounds of sodas, iced teas and the milkshake-esque beverages. Getting the flair is the smoothies, several homemade lemonades and Belgian style hot chocolate. There will not be no smiles on your face by the end of it all. And in conjunction to this, be on the lookout for more options on the board.

Starting off as usual, it was beverages and I got coffee - a doppio. From memory, the coffee that they use is from Schibelo and I can never really remember giving any strong opinion on it. It is a'ight, and if a good enough barista is at the helm it can be adequate. What often occurs though is that it is merely a mid-carder, and only a decent coffee at best. It was more or less the case, and if it were just coffee this would not be memorable. But it adds to the sum of its parts, and we are in good hands here.

The next call of business was getting some starters as per usual. My dad has the know-how with restaurants, and with several people here being really indecisive he stepped up to the plate. One good aspect about the service was that for five people, they were able to alter servings where needed to have five apiece where needed.

The three starters beginning were the satay duck spring rolls, some Thai fish cakes with a side salad, and gyozas filled with pork, crab and water chestnuts. Each one of these were really delicious, with the spring rolls being a step up from the norm - though still more or less spring rolls - where the filling was discernible beyond a handful of cabbage. They were also hot like they were fresh from the fryer. The gyozas were not bad either; the chestnuts had a good crunch, the crab meat was a nice texture next to the flavour and tender texture of the pork. Finally, these fish cakes were actually quite good. Thai fish cakes often tend to be a bit rubbery, and might have a little flavour to them. As for these, I could believe that only minutes before they were on the table that they were being made from fresh fish - and the flavours in them were tangy making them better. Adding on to that was a good Asian-style slaw.

And those are just the start of what there was on offer. If only a sample platter could come out with them, or be organised for much bigger groups, then that would be an example of hog heaven. When there are at least one or two more options that would be great candidates in the selection, then a place is really doing its job well. That is the case here. And it warrants several visits to attempt trying everything on the menu, with more people in tow of course.

After that, it was on to the main dishes. Each of us got a main meal, and with luck there was a good selection gotten, both with different meats and with different compositions. The sizes of the meals are not too bad. On their own, they might be a little bit on the lacking side so getting something to start with or on the side would probably juice them up a bit. They are acceptable at this one, but it is just a forewarning to fellow food fans with big stomachs.

One of the ones that had to be gotten were the goat tenderloins. These were done in the style of tandoori, having a similar composition as an Indian curry. They were placed on top of a sweet potato and lentil ragout, and a finish of honey yoghurt. This was from my dining buddy, and he is starting to get worried that he picks the weakest of the meals within these groups (... maybe my parents are an omen to him? That arrangement is usually the case with him). While on some level, I might agree that the goat was possibly not the best cooked, nor did it really enhance how goat can be done well, but it was certainly far from being awful. Apart from flavour that does take getting used to, the tenderloins were not all that bad - they were enhanced a lot by the choices of spices and composition in the meal - a bit tangy, certainly smokey, and it is set off by some creaminess. Giving it more Middle Eastern than Indian influence was the ragout, which was sweet from the kumura, and robust with the lentils. First up, not so bad.

Next up was some fish. I can't remember the kind of fish it was; what I do remember is that it was like a curry. The fish was spiced with a heaping of turmeric, and with another creamy sauce and peppers on the side. It was pretty simple, and the fish was tender and mildly flavoured. That is about it to explain the meal, and it was one of the lunch specials that shows that there is a good crew behind in the kitchen who are always on fire (..... figuratively). Take the second one for a good win.

My dish was a classic one. Way in the past, maybe even into now to a lesser extent, it was hard for me to go beyond the duck dish. Things have changed, and other items did look good (again, we are talking about a place that warrants so many returns), but duck still does have something irresistible about it. So for me, it was a duck Maryland. This was served with fat-roasted potatoes, dutch cabbage, and a red wine jus. Again, we come to the word reliable. The duck was a decent quarter bird, and the meat was cooked so brilliantly that there was a combination of crispy skin on the outside (always a winner), and tender meat where the bones were able to be pulled apart. It was tasty, juicy, and complimented well with a well done jus. Rounding it all off were the potatoes, which were simply soft and moreish. They soaked the sauce/jus up so well. This was simplicity well done.

Well, it is probably a maxim somewhere (if not, I am making it so) that someone in a dining group is eventually going to be the one to order a steak, or get "the steak". That was so here, and my dad was the one to pull the trigger. While there were a couple of steak options available, the one that he went for was the sirloin. This was crusted with a garlic and pepper seasoning, and served on top of cumin roasted potatoes, and vegetables along with a truffle jus. It was not so bad. The meat was tender, there was a fair bit of juiciness to it, plus the crust of the beef was rightfully tangy. While this definitely was not a bad dish, and in comparison to many other it was in fact several degrees better, why it might not have the same glowing reception is that it was not as bold nor as inventive as what is the norm when Terry Leung is at the helm of a restaurant. This speaks more to me as a well-done meal in your standard semi-high end restaurant or a specialty in a steakhouse. It's decent, but compared to some of the more in-your-face flavours and textures, it got lost among the shuffle to say a phrase.

Last and not least, there were the sticky pork ribs. Mincing words is not needed for it in my mind, as the words already speak for themselves. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth, the caramalised sauce was perfect - about the only way sauce can be done on ribs to give them justice - and that is about it. There might have been a salad on the side, fresh and everything ... but this was brilliant. Originally, it was meant to come with scallops but those were out of season. This was a chance to show the waitress was not awful, as she knew during the ordering to compromise. Getting back on track, give pretty damn good meals makes for some good momentum.

For one last go-round, I was willing to get dessert. Others weren't as such, but I find Terry's fare good enough that omitting trying his sweets is not doing it justice. So weaseling in another coffee like I normally do, I went to read the dessert selection. Even just scouring the menu, there was one item that I had locked in at the end. I am a sucker for affogato, and the Soul Affogato here had butterscotch ice-cream and crushed macadamia nuts to specialise it. How yummy does that sound? To be honest, as good as it was I could not tell much apart from most other affogatos I have had. The ice cream was smooth and creamy, and at times I definitely could taste a bit of butterscotch. But just look at my photo with the two affogatos and try to see which one has the butterscotch ice cream (spoiler: it is the one on the right). Still, it made for a decent end to the meal, the coffee was well extracted and the ice cream was certainly better quality than normal.

As for the sweets, I got the tiramisu. This was not the ordinary kind, but one made of white chocolate and mixed berries. Mix it up with some mascapone cream and short bread. Being used to association tiramisu with coffee flavours, it was a bit surprising to get one without much of that flavour, is any was used in it. Instead, it was more of the style of tiramisu - which is one of Italy's classics - given the flair that has been alluded to many times already. In defense, that was possibly the only way to end off the night with any kind of justice to the restaurant. After realising how weird it is compared to other desserts, in trying it out it was pretty damn good. One of the reasons for why tiramisu is so good is due to the soft and moreish texture that is thanks to the mascapone cream. That was there, and it was about as light as a feather. White chocolate and berries - specifically raspberries - are a perfect combination that I have never managed to figure out why, but they just do - possibly the tartness and sweetness combining into one another. That was key here, and to finish it all of was some short bread with pistachios. All to give it some crunch and texture, and round the dessert off. And that was the end of that, a great meal that has come to be expected knowing the genius behind the helm.

For many years, I have really admired Terry's cooking style and innovation. Way before reviewing restaurants even, my family would often visit Food & Soul until its closure, and every time there was something new to admire. He could have well been on the level of some of the world's most fancy and out there chefs, but he stuck to humble roots in the small suburb of Milton. If I ever got to review Food & Soul, believe me it would have been beyond glowing. Going to the two offshoots, Southside Bistro and Soul Bistro, much of the flair and innovation is still present. Soul Bistro was pretty close to capturing that flair, capturing that characteristic spark that was apparent at Food & Soul all those years ago. With how much popularity has exploded resulting from that move, I will let it speak for itself.

TL;DR: Explaining what the food is like does not do it justice beyond saying that it is innovation beyond fusion. Whether it is here or Soutside Bistro (Food & Soul has long closed its doors), both are great representations for what Terry is able to whip up and it has the same old pizzazz. What is different is now the food is made to be shared, and that is a great step beyond. He is just as warm as he ever was, he has chosen the new location well and it has a warming glow and great environment for any such occasion. While many places have you spoiled for choice, this is one where every single choice is just as tempting as the last - that is the main reason getting a group together is ideal. All the aspects are right on cue, and the locals of Milton have another gem in their midst.

Friendly service and lovely food. The ambience was a bit meh, but the food made up for it. There's a little indoor section that has air con, so go in there on a summer's day!

Food and service were awesome! The tapas recommended did not fail to deliver. Between 4 of us, we had 6 tapas/side and 2 desserts. We were stuffed!

6 out of 5! Been here at least six times and the service has never disappointed and the food has surpassed rivals who charge a significant amount more. My favourite part of this restaurant is that the staff don't force fake customer service on you. You can tell everything they say and do is genuine and it's a lovely environment to be in. It's not a pretentious restraunt and focuses more on food and happiness of customers. One of the awesome breakfast option pictures

Really delicious food here! It was our first time there and will definitely be going back again in the future. The staff are really lovely and look after you, providing tips for portion sizes and meal suggestions. The creme brulee dessert is a must!
Peruvian Palate
Got the lunch special pork burger. Great service, big portion and everything tasted so fresh! Their house made lemon iced tea was perfect for a hot day, not too sweet either. The pork patty had a nice char on the outside but it remained juicy on the inside. Nice toasted Turkish bread. The aioli was watery and had no flavour unfortunately.

I wouldn't agree with calling it "asian with a twist" as most meals seem to come from a modern Australian background but the food here is great nonetheless. My only nitpick is that the service can be a little over-pushy sometimes with the upsell and they have the longest "specials of the day" speech I've ever experienced. All in all, I will be back again!

Simply UNACCEPTABLE! Could've rated lower than 1 if possible.
Came here because of the relatively high review but very very disappointed with the service and the food was a disgrace!
Ordered 'what's supposed to be' medium cooked eye filet steak (priced at $29.5), what came out was a way overcooked piece of beef that looked worse than random frozen meal, and there's no way on earth it could be eye filet.
Ordered another pork with scallops and ramen, which the ramen looked like a random instant noodle pack with a bit of sprinkled chilli spice powder from the instant noodle.
Asian green was the most disgusting plate with some burnt grilled onion and what seemed to be some offcut veggie pieces.

Adding on top of all this disgrace is the service: pour water into my glass of wine, and walked away. I provided feedback about the meal when I paid, and the guy couldn't seem to care enough about how terrible the dining experience was, which he contributed a big part.

Can't believe this restaurant still exists...
My family and me came here after seeing the very high rating but the food was utterly a disappointment. It could have been a one-off but we are Asians ourselves and could not stand the Asian twist added onto the Western food. We ordered a medium beef eye fillet plate to get 2 pieces of tough, totally not juicy and overcooked beef which were not even eye fillet steaks. We asked one staff and she said the Asian green was stirfry yet it turned out to have been baked and slightly overcooked. The scallop and pork dish was very disappointing and not worth the $28.5 we paid as noodles was like instant noodles and the portion size was fairly small. The only acceptable dish was the lunch special battered Seafood and Lychee mint drink. We hardly enjoyed the meal at all.

Our first time here on a friend's recommendation. Brilliant service from all staff including one girl on her first night.
The owner and chef was so lovely and explained all the specials and had a chat to us before we ordered.
We chose the tater tots with chorizo and sesame crumbed whiting to begin with... Both were outstanding- flavoursome and piping hot. Then came some gf nut bread with dip and oil with balsamic- so moreish!
I ordered the stir fry of prawns and calamari which came with a spicy sauce and rice- amazing! My son had the wagyu steak with potatoes and veges and truffle jus.
Medium rare was what he asked for and exactly how it was cooked. A salad of fennel, quinoa, lemon and kale went well alongside our meals- so light and refreshing.
Being a school night- we drank a smoothie and homemade lemonade with our food. The lemonade I chose was raspberry, orange and mint- not too sweet. As this restaurant is in our neighbourhood we will be back to try more delicious food from the extensive menu. Go there- great food, service and atmosphere.

The girls here are great and good food. The food could be better. But the service excellent and welcoming. And prices good too.
We enjoy to have a night out here and will like to come next time.

Good food.
Service - a little inconsistent. Inexperienced young waitress tried hard but appeared flustered. Once I saw an eye roll. Owner tries to be there - he appears mildly friendly most of the time.
Again I stress the food is pretty good.
Maybe a little overpriced given the setting and service was a little less than one would hope.

A great casual lunch or dinner venue, just off Baroona Rd. near the iconic XXXX brewery and Milton Railway Station. Tried the steak and slow cooked pork belly. Both dishes were well plated and cooked. The pork in particular was tender and tasty with minimal garnish. A range of specials were available on the day from $10. Other more substantial meals from $20 to $25 included Duck and tapas selections for small bite sized sharing. BYO licence available for drinks, although a good variety of fruit options. Coffee was smooth with no bitterness. A good overall package in this competitive area.

Asian with a twist? Items on the menu got me confused a little trying to cover all different types of foods.

We started with the meat balls as a shared entree, yum! Juicy and well flavoured.

Mains where two lamb dishes, lamb ribs and also a lamb cut special - wow, I would have to say the broccoli was one high light of my night. Deep fried then grilled!??! The lamb was also of high quality and cooked well.

Desert we had the apple and rhubarb crumble and was a little disappointed - it was flame torched a little too much and the whole desert tasted like burnt toast.

Dessert did take a little long to come out and did struggle to wave down someone to find out if our desert was even coming.
Perfect, perfect, perfect!!
The staff was absolutely amazing and the food was divine!! We had a wonderful experience there. Recommend 100%.

It has been a few years since I have been to Soul Bistro, and I’m sure that in that time new owners have taken over the restaurant. It was entirely different on this visit. Previously, it was more generic western/european food, more typical fare like steak and pan-fried fish. Now, it is more fusion food.

This place is truly a little gem!! Tucked away behind the hustle and bustle of Milton road, the atmosphere here was tranquil by comparison, largely due to the calm and professional wait-staff of whom, no request was too difficult!
The menu options are exciting! So many flavour combinations that we wanted to try but settled on the "San choi bowls", the "sticky lamb ribs", the "chickpea crusted sweet potato chips" and the special, "crispy skinned barramundi". The food was brought out with little time to wait and it was absolutely delicious!
Definitely worth going and trying it out, I know we'll definitely be back!!
Jasha
Great range of breakfasts with a varied menu - not just your regular bacon and eggs! Lovely flavours, interesting offerings, good coffee. Great way to start the day.

Reading this collection of 'love ins' was what prompted me to punt a night with family, and what I can say is the most overrated experience in the inner west.

Soul Bistro tries to be everything to everyone - asian classics through to fish and chips, middle eastern ... if you can think of it, it's on the menu.

And this leads to a problem, the food just isn't good. Maybe it was just a one-off, but I couldn't wait to get out of there.
HungryTumTum
We had the Christmas lunch there with their group menu. The service was great! The tandoori Barra was better than the creamy sizzling prawn. Could be better in term of flavours. Dessert was scrumptious without being over bearing. We had a great time thanks to the friendly service staff. And the atmosphere was nice in the little nook in a corner. Colleague loved her house made lemonade with lychee and I had the lychee with apple and kaffir lime and chilli. Very interesting and enjoyable
Jessica
Love the $10 lunch time feeds! Our regular Friday work lunch venue. A meal and a drink for $10! No-one can argue with that. I have never had a bad meal here.

Came here for my Dad's birthday during the week. It is a casual dining restaurant with tapas as well as large meals. Service was efficient and friendly. For dinner we shared the bread and dips and chorizo gems then all had a separate main. I had sticky lamb ribs, my husband had the fish and chips and my parents had the pie special. My opinion on the food is that it was average. The food came out hot and was well cooked, however I felt that perhaps they were trying to over complicate their flavors. For example when I first started eating the ribs I thought the flavor was strong but lovely and the meat beautifully fell of the bone. However about half way through the dish the flavor became too sweet (it had honey in it) And I found it hard to finish. The Flavors needed to be more subtle. For dessert my Dad and husband both ordered the apple crumble and my mum and I shared the coconut panacotta. The flavors in the dessert were lovely, the only downfall being the consistency - It was really thick. Panacotta should be light. Way too much gelatin must have been used. Overall our family enjoyed the evening but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. There are other restaurants at that price point that I enjoy more.

We had a fantastic experience dining here last night. The service was exceptional, the food delicious.. How good are those homemade lemonades? And SRSLY the best creme brulee I have ever eaten.
Major Eatingstuff
Wow! Great Sunday brunch here. Good is generally tasty & well prepared. Double cooked pork breakfast burger was big & delicious. The satay pork & giant scallop was a winner. Beautifully just cooked scallaps, nice char on bok choy and char pork. Strong and delicious satay worked surprising well together. And, the sizzling chic brownie is like an inside out fondant, super yum!
Bec Sparkes
Soul Bistro is a quality find with an extensive gluten free menu! The tapas is not your standard fare and big enough to share. The Quinoa fried rice was amazing and an interesting spin on the usual. We ordered a variety of tapas to share with the clear winners being the whiting in a sesame crumb and the haloumi, mint and carrot fritters. The chorizo tater tots were disappointing in comparison to our other choices. Desserts looked amazing, but not all delivered :( The tiramisu was more like a parfait and the creme brulee had an awesome top, but was a tad eggy. The sizzling brownie and apple rhubarb crumble were the picks of the day and the added theatre of the sizzle plate made dessert instaworthy. The staff were super friendly and service was prompt. Highly recommend this Byo restaurant.

Asian fusion flavours with a western twist! This is one of my favourite places in Brisbane to go for some tapas. I would recommend the sticky lamb ribs, the cheese plate and the brownies! We also got a shepherds pie which was OK but not the best I've had, but the chips were great! The owner is so friendly, came out and explained the menu and gave us great recommendations. The home made lemonade is a must try!

Nice breakfast here in the heart of Milton. The decor was nice and service was good. All aspects on each dish were cooked to an above average standard with right amount of seasoning and balance. Will return again!

Locating in a local shopping village at Milton. Love this restaurant with a lots of choices on menu. Dishes are rustic but tasteful. I like the chef's passion on his food preparation. Quantity and quality are superb standard. I have to mention about the service, wait-staff are friendly and manager (maybe the boss) is so keen on looking after patrons. It is really a local gem.
Brisfoodanddrink
I really liked this place. I discovered it when the kids were at ballet! Food is playful and unique. I had fennel and zucchini chip things and they were lovely! The owner was lovely and chatted to me for a short time. I hope they continue to do well.

Wonderful! Went here for the first time this morning, and shared the breakfast tapas. What a surprise! Absolutely loved everything on the plate. Soul offers a fresh inventive menu; there was not one thing on the menu that I wouldn't like to try. Great value for money and not your typical greasy bacon and eggs. Really great coffee and want for nothing service. So glad we stumbled across this place, we will be back and can't wait!
Mary
Great food, great value for money & lots of food choices. Friendly staff greet you, and the choice is endless with lots if great value combos. Don't forget dessert they are amazing!

Interesting food and good value. Went as a group of six for lunch. A good choice of meals, also several daily lunch specials, which are really good value. Service was fine. Not licenced, but there is a bottle shop about 50 metres away.

Great Place , will be back!. I heard about this place and went over the weekend.

I'm new to Urbanspoon but thought I'd put up a review since I was so impressed.

Well done! I love the menu and the meals are so tasty! I can't wait to go back for more!

Terrific menu and value - (discount avail early dinner and entertainment book). K and I tried dining here for lunch today -our only disappointment was that we used a one off discount voucher from the entertainment book , and in retrospect maybe we should have kept it for a dinner date.

Colourful menu, certainly made it hard to select, I had the peri peri slow cooked beef on sweet potato mash and K had the sizzling chicken and prawn plateer both where specials for the day with a bonus lemon ice tea, which they kindly let us upgrade to their home made fruit flavoured lemonade which where sensational ( @ upgrade charge).

Run by a nice family team, which is nice to support when you see the effort delivered. Flavoured home made lemonades , where an addition that most dinning establishments should try to mimicking or offer similiar. most places offer little in the way of non-alcoholic drinks for dinners options. Meals where reasonable on size - if your keeping an eye on the KJ's - which makes it easy to dine out more regularly.

TIPS:
1) 10% discount for early dinners
2) arrive early if you want an easy park for lunch, they are just opposite "wot if" and the car park fills up quick.

Fabulous. I have been a fan of Terry's (owner) restaurants for a long time - firstly Food and Soul at Auchenflower which closed, and now Soul at Milton. I organised a party of 13 for dinner and as it was hot booked a small inside room at the side which was perfect. Due to the numbers I let Terry choose the dishes for the menu as obviously with such a large number in a small restaurant, all dishes on the normal menu wouldn't be available. His selection was superb. The dishes are always scrumptious and unusual, with a bit of added Asian influence. The entire group raved about their meals so I was pleased I had chosen Soul. Terry is the perfect host, always checks that diners are happy, and his staff deliver a very polished service.
Well done Soul and thank you!
Crabmonster
Nice food and reasonable priced. The food was actually not bad, service was nice...I go there for lunch often and the lunch deal is amazing and the ice coffee which comes with lunch is divine.

Excellent group dining!. Soul Bistro were very accommodating of a relatively last minute booking for 18 people. The owner sent me a variety of group dining menu options, each more delicious looking than the last, and I selected one to suit our budget. They called me to confirm that we were still coming, and had a gorgeous setting arranged for us when we arrived, even though Brisbane had just experienced a big storm.

The food came thick and fast. It was absolutely mouthwatering and the staff did their utmost to see that we were well looked after. We had a large amount of BYO alcohol which they were wonderful about serving to us regularly. The owner is a character - a lovely, lovely guy!!!

The sizzling almond brownie was next level awesome! Thanks so much for a really special night!
Gemma.newton
Great Experience!. I don't have anything bad to say about our experience at Soul Bistro! We went for breakfast and the menu was fabulous, the food even better, and the price was definitely a bonus! We had two breakfasts, two coffees and a juice for about $35! Will be back for more, and definitely recommend Soul Bistro to everyone!

Friendly cafe with delicious food!. Tried Soul Cafe for lunch today on the recommendation of a friend. Was not disappointed. Being Coeliac I have to have Gluten Free food, and was spoilt for choice with so many options. I had Kimchee Pancakes with honey and soy chicken and poached eggs. It was a very generous serving and was delicious.
My husband had a burger with chips and declared it tasty and fresh with crispy chips.
Also tried the homemade lemonade with raspberry, on a hot day this was sensational.
The staff are very friendly and cheerful. I will return to try other offerings and would recommend to friends.

Good food, nice area just outside of the busy places near park rd. Love their $10 daily lunch specials. Normally you get to pick a buger dish, rice dish, or salad/soup dish. It also includes a iced latte or iced lemon tea. Delicious and great place outside of the busy park rd. Staff are friendly and price is good.

The only bad thing I can think of is they're sometimes not consistent so one day you might get a very good dish but on another day when it's busy especially you might get a burnt burger.

Overall good...

Back for the third time and the food gets better each time. Service is impeccable and food to die for! Our new favourite

Rude Service. Rude service just trying to make a reservation. Wont even bother to go there.

Had another great meal tonight. One of our favourite places to eat. Friendly welcoming staff with a special mention for Terry.

Another regular goto. We've been coming to Soul Bistro since it opened and are never disappointed. The menu is seasonal and the specials are rotated very quickly so there's always something new to try. The waitstaff are super friendly and usually know all about the food which is nice.
Will be going back many more times.
Lisa
Great Value. After hearing great things about Soul we decided to give it a go and weren't disappointed, food was delicious and fresh, service was (mostly) prompt and (always) with a smile. Very near to Milton Rd but not too noisy. I love the variety on the specials board and will definitely be back.
DianaW
Diana. Second visit here-this time for breakfast. Really interesting b/f menu, decided on the brekky hash which was sweet potato chunks with eggs onion etc & a delightful chapati on the side. Still serving up up fresh innovative since our last visit Coffee needed a bit more strength & everything would have perfect

-----21 Sep, 2014-----

Diana. We were quite surprised by the quality & size of the tapas at Soul as we went there on a coupon deal. Huge servings & very flavorsome. Apart from the my desert which was the battered fruits we enjoyed all the dishes. the problem with the desert was the batter lacked that lightness & crunch like in the savory dishes. Service was good & prompt, but on saying that they were not busy for a Saturday night
Gillian
Great lunch and good service. Love the specials each day
TK
Best lunch I've had in a long time! Finished the whole plate and so reasonably priced! Oh and the service was great too! Winning
FoodySteve86
Delicious good food.. Went here with a Scoopon & was extremely happy with the tapas style meals we chose. we had the duck spring rolls, gyozas with pork & crab meat. sticky lamb ribs & delicious pork belly. service was a breeze. highly recommended
Anonymous
Average food but with a brownie dessert to die for!. We went there with a Scoopon voucher which included 4 small plates, 4 large plates, 4 desserts and 4 drinks. The tapas plates were pretty average; the fried foods were not crispy at all however the pork belly was very tasty. The raspberry, orange and mint lemonade was really delicious, the lemon and rosemary was quite good though nothing special and the lychee lemonade was far too sweet. The crepes I was told was nothing special but the tiramisu was delicious though quite small and presentation could be improved. Overall, the entire meal was quite disappointing HOWEVER the sizzling brownie dessert was unbelievable!! Seriously tasty and exceptionally presented that dessert single handedly made me forget my disappointment regarding the rest of the meal. I would definitely return but only for that brownie.
Markdmclean
Lovely evening. We were looking for somewhere not too formal, close to Auchenflower, with a varied and reasonably-priced menu and chanced upon Soul. Very friendly staff, good choice (tapas and mains), food was excellent - served piping hot and extremely tasty. It was a cold evening but the staff lit gas heaters which took the chill away. It is BYO and the bottle shop is in the same row of shops - making it very easy. No problem with parking, some traffic noise - being next to Milton Road - not unexpected. All in all, we can highly recommend Soul and will be back often.
Emma
Lovely local.. Reliable, vast menu changes frequently.
Staff are delightful and attentive, but don't hurry you through either.
Cindy Hsieh
Beautiful!. Went in with my husband for breakfast on a Tuesday, beautiful food, presentation, drinks and wonderful staff. Visited them again on Friday night to try their dinner menu, we were both very satisfied. I wish we knew this place sooner, will definitely visit Soul Bistro more!
Laura Godwin
Worst eggs Benedict I've ever had. Tiny piece of toast, weird tasting hollandaise sauce and ham that tasted and looked like it had come from a prepackaged container from woolworths. I could have cooked a better meal for myself at home.
Geoff
Breakfast is a winner. We had the Big Breakfast. Generous serves of yummy foods. It's what you'd expect from a suburban cafe. Good value and good food (sadly not great food). I'd go back!

Awesome Value. Found this place last Friday, always go to the IGA nearby in Milton but never knew it was here...and for 5 years apparently. We went with their some of their lunch specials for the day. They were pretty cheap, $10 to $13 dollars was the range I think and they came with a with a free homemade iced tea which was a nice surprise. Honestly, I wasn't expecting a lot to be there for the price..take off like 3 to 4 dolalrs for the drink that you may normally have to pay somehwere else, and I just got a lunch for like 7...but it was still a decent amount..so quite happy with that. Holy crap though, my bf ordered the burger special for $10..it was not small at all, came with chips and the free drink too. It's a little loud during lunch, but not much they can do about the traffic near milton rd (i think one ambulance went by). Great find for the price, will definitely be back, especially as the waiter said they change the specials all the time
Alana
A bit of a let down :(. Came here after good reviews and reading the amazing looking menu. Love our drinks and loved the service. I feel bad but both our dishes were so bland it wasn't funny. I got the buffalo chicken with blue cheese wraps and it was stuffed with chicken that wasn't crispy, a few pieces of cheese and a ton of bland unseasoned white glugy rice. My boyfriend got the special and paid the $4 to up the size and it was still tiny and no flavour either. Don't think i'll come back here unless I really crave iced tea.
Jane Paul
Splendid. Delicious food and outstanding service! Highly recommended, and the house made lemon and rosemary lemonade is a must have.

Tres magnifique. Wow what a little gem coming from the foodie capital Melbourne and now living in Queensland I was impressed.
Great food, fast service and professional. I'll be back.......:)
Lucy
Delicious, interesting food. Soul Bistro's ever changing menu is delicious, tantalising and filling. The home made lemonades add that twist. Atmosphere is lacking at lunch but ok at night. The prices are very reasonable, if in another location with better ambience the price could double. The food is so great, enjoy a wonderful meal, go with friends, chat and forget about the setting.
Renee
Yum. Was brought here by a girlfriend to catch up for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed everything. very reasonably priced lunch special which included a coffee. My friend and I both had the Salmon special which was delicious and served with steamed rice and flavorsome vegetables. We also shared the sweet potato chips with aioli, YUM! service was very friendly. Coffee wasn't the best however was fine with sugar. Would recommend and will be back to try more from their extensive menu.

Great food, such friendly service and best of all- very reasonably priced. Recommend the home-made lemonade with rosemary & the $28.50 3 course set menu for dinner. Also recommend the crepes for dessert!

Excellent food adventurous.... Excellent food
adventurous Asian fusion pairing aromatic herbs with a modern Australian menu
Very fairly priced for the quality of food - a definite find
Fast quick turnaround for orders
Very good quality kids menu - so rare not a chicken nugget in sight very fair price
Will definitely come again
Jesskaar
Good value.. We each ordered the three course menu for $28.50. First course was minestrone soup which was good enough, but the side bread was very strange. The main was spaghetti with meatballs which I found not be very tasty. The meatballs had a mushy texture and the spaghetti was overcooked, with a very bland sauce. My friends' steaks also were a bit tough, but cooked well with sides of crispy potatoes and vegetables, and a peppered jus. Dessert was apple and cinnamon crumble with icecream, or orange and almond cake with peppered iceream. The peppered icecream was a bit weird, but every seemed to be enjoying themselves. Soul was packed on a Tuesday night, but the food came out promptly and the service was attentive enough. Even though the food wasn't outstanding, it was still relaxed and extremely good value.

GREAT BREKKY. We go there for brekky every weekend - cant beat $6.50 bacon and eggs with homemade beans with $2 orange juice and $2 coffee before 11. The raspberry and orange lemonade is unbeatable, as is the horseradish sour cream. A lovely family run cafe
LT
Lovely service. Delicious breakfasts. Great relaxed and down to earth atmosphere.

Lovely well priced Bistro. Had another lovely night here before heading to the games last night; they give 10% off for game nights as well. Love this place to bits; have been many times and recommend it to friends all the time. They always have specials changing, so you never get bored. Tried so many things here and have always loved it, and the staff are very friendly too. For the price that you pay here, it is ridiculously reasonable. I really have to say though, I have worked in this hospitality for a long time now; you pay for ambience. Some people should learn that before they simply write things at a whim. Sure I may not get the best ambience here, but i get good food and lovely service; for the price I pay here, I'm more than happy with that.
Delia
A bad experience.... Overall, a disappointing experience. My main, the pork belly, was terrible. It was cut into small pieces and pan-friend and therefore, tough as boots and tasteless. I sent it back and they didn't charge me, but it was a big disappointment. The waitress was very sweet, but didn't have any idea about the menu she was serving. When we asked about the dips that came with the bread entree, she said she had no clue and proceeded to tell us about the dips they USED to serve. Strange. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was also poor. Definitely sit outside if you have the option. Despite all of the above, the duck spring rolls were yummy. However, overall it was a bad experience. I would never go back and would never recommend it to others.

Not as good as expected. After reading all the good reviews we decided to give this restaurant a shot but i didn't think the foods are very special. the portions were small and didn't fill us up (i am a small eater)
i ordered the fish with some kind of coconut cake, and my husband ordered 200g steak. i didn't like the fish at all, it's hard and skin-on (i supposed i should of asked before i ordered). My husband liked his steak and the pepper sauce.
staff and chef were friendly. overall it's a good experience but we will not go back.

Total Winner. Time and time again I have been to Soul. Always love it. Always perfect service. Always perfect coffee. Always good food. Except for the risotto, I didn't like the risotto. Other than that every other 547832843 times I have been there. AMAZING!
Allan
Very relaxed and unpretentious service. Enjoyed the baked escargot for entree. Duck three ways was a treat and the snapper was perfect. Fresh figs with a honey balsamic reduction for dessert was a stunning finish. Add BYO and we had enjoyable meal for great value.

Fabulous little cafe with exceptional service and food. Will definitely go back. You will not be disappointed if you visit Soul. Give it a try.

Lovely food and reasonably priced.. Great place for a decent lunch. I had the lemongrass beef salad and it was yummy. Service is great, attentive and friendly waiters. Love their drinks menu. That lychee drink was so refreshing. Will definitely come back to try their other specials.
Food Blogette
One of my all time favourite restaurants. I am so glad it opened. Went there for the second time with my girlfriends and we are all so pleased with the food as well as the service. The price is affordable as well for high quality food. Must try the crepes for dessert. Delicious!!

Excellent food and great service in a small BYO restaurant. Highly recommended.

Excellent every time. Try the lam b shoulder and risotto.

Amazing food and service. Max and his staff are amazingly attentive and well mannered. The meals are generous, and VERY well priced. Worth the wait (if ever there is one!), and definitely worth going back again and again to work your way through the ever changing menu. Our go-to restaurant.

Great little place. I go there often for lunch, its cheap, good and welcoming. There are a good variety of dishes on the menu, the staff is welcoming and pretty quick service. Foof is excellent and good quality, i would recommend.

Lunch with friends. This is the second time we have been to Soul Bistro for our girls lunch and definitely won't be the last. Both times the service has been fabulous and the food to die for. Usually in a group of 7 people someone would find something wrong but not at Soul. The food tastes terrific, is presented beautifully and comes out promptly. The Grilled Haloumi & Mushrooms were particularly nice today as by all reports were the fish and chips. Highly, highly recommended.

Why go past?. Yes I have crossed the River. Had a meal last week that was excellent in value and quality. Cost $28 for a three course set meal with three choices. No vegetarian option, however food was perfect. Corkage $2 pp. A bit cold sitting on the pavement outside TAB but gas heater toasted one side of body adequately. A very relaxed and enjoyable night for four. Recommend

Interesting dishes (though the pork hock is sweet enough to be dessert!) and friendly staff. They were kind and accommodating enough to put together a veg dish that wasnt on the menu for my vegetarian friend. Their other place is also very good.

I really enjoy going to Soul Bistro. It's a friendly and relaxed restaurant that never fails to deliver fresh and exciting food. It's BYO and the prices are very reasonable. If you need a restaurant that will accommodate a range of dietary requirements then Soul Bistro is ideal. Most meals are dairy and gluten free. What I really enjoy here is that everything tastes like it has been made at the restaurant. Service is good too.

Eating breakfast at Soul Bistro showed us that you don't have to spend fifty bucks plus for two for breakfast, with the total breaky spend being under thirty bucks! Surprisingly with such a good value breakfast, it was really quiet with only one other customer coming in for breakfast while we were there.

I got an apple berry crush, super bright red, lots of floating seeds and a strong berry flavour with a nice balance between sweet and sour flavours. It was quite thick with a tangy berry sorbet chunk floating in the centre. My only complaint was that it was full of seeds, and I had to chew a bit after every sip. H., tried some and kept sipping my drink when she thought I wasn't looking.

...pot pie was pork and apple, served with steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. Perfect for a chilly evening.

The owner was very friendly and always up for a chat. And with $28.50 getting you a three course meal, you can hardly go wrong. It's food for the soul and wallet.
The fries were covered in a chickpea coating - like a tempura batter, giving the usually limp sweet potato chips a good crunch. Dipped into the herb aioli, the flavours just made my taste buds sing.

...the accompaniments were over-whelmingly sweet as they were cooked in the marmalade-like glaze. Probably, the likes of some plain roasted potatoes would do the trick.....
