Review Chow House - Brisbane

An Nguyen
3.75 stars - restaurant has great atmosphere and friendly staff. Some dishes were a hit and miss. Prices are reasonable for some too. We tried the: 》pecking duck & shallot pancake - substantial size, very salty tho 》Honey sriracha pork belly - my favourite dish! The meat was nice and soft and the skin was super crunchy. Amazing flavours 》 Sticky glazed beef short rib - also another favourite. Meat fell off the bone easily, had good smokey flavours 》Teriyaki Salmon - fish was cooked well however the sauce was average. The mixture with orange was strange 》 Chicken, green mango & lychee salad - interesting fusion. Very refreshing however chicken is quite bland 》 Pork bao - also another interesting fusion. Bit dry and the combinations of flavours didn't work very well together

I like the atmosphere and the the decor. It felt cozy and relaxing. The coffee was quite good and it has your main breakfast staples on the menu, haven't seen lunch or dinner menu. The breakfast beef burrito was pretty good, didn't let me down. Overall good place, solid but not a standout. Would I return? Yes, but not go out of my way.

Price: ★★★★☆ (reasonable) Portion: ★★★★☆ (quite large and generous) Taste: ★★★☆☆ (the dishes are hits and misses. My Nasi Goreng was very tasty but coconut chicken salad was only ok) Ambiance: ★★★☆☆ (modern Australian and seat are spacious) Service: ★★★★☆ (friendly and fast)

Hit and miss here but I love how experimental the menu is! I had some very disappointing ricotta French toast here one time so have stuck to savoury ever since. I absolutely love one particular dish - smoked salmon on hash potato cake with avocado, poached egg and horse radish creme fraiche! I get it every time now and it is the perfect indulgent breakfast for weekends!

Mocha was really sweet. Smoked salmon potato cake is pretty small but interesting. For almost $20 you will get nothing but a burger on a plate. No chips or any greens of any sort. You can do better Chow House!!

Good to hang out with friends in this place....I am not sure about the food...it wasn't so tasty for me thought 🤔 It was just average

During a brief visit to Brisbane over the weekend a friend who lives in Fortitude Valley recommended this restaurant. Three of us ordered the ‘special’ for the evening, ‘snapper fillet on a taro rösti’. The fish was perfectly cooked and the taro rösti crisp and delicious. The broccoli and sauce were a perfect accompaniment. The Pork Belly (smelt and looked divine) and chicken satay ordered by others were apparently very good as well. An easy 5 star for the food this evening. We found the seating awkward - 2 round tables together in the central inside area where we moved to after changing from an outdoor table in a high traffic area. The service and setting just ok so overall 4 stars from me. I’d like to go back just to try the pork belly!

This place has a great ambience and vibe. However, food could be better as it was little heavier on the salty side. Presentation of the food was great though. Service could be better and more friendly.
Chips Before Dips
The staff were friendly, and the location is nice. The food is good, not great. The Papaya salad was a little lacklustre, it’s possible I just ordered the wrong thing.
Would happily return to give it another go, I had food envy for my friends Nasi Goreng.

Good and tasty food. Ok service. Value for money.
It's an Asian food place so don't be surprised with plenty of fried food options (as I was) :-)

Came here for lunch after a friend's recommendation. I decided to try an assortment of items from the "street chow" section of their menu (pork belly bao, chicken sliders) , my partner had the nasi goreng, and of course, as always, a side of fries. Nasi goreng was superb, flavours complemented each other and the dish was perfectly balanced. Although tasty, the pork belly and the chicken in my bao and burger were slightly overcooked, and there was a lot of sauce and oil was dripping from both. I was also slightly disappointed that the food didn't come out at the same time, my partner's nasi goreng came out about 20 minutes before my dishes came out.

Went there for breakfast. Service was horrible. Food came out late. People that came after us were served before us. When the food came out, they only served one of us. After 10 minutes, we had to ask for the second meal. The staff was not friendly. The food was missing major components, being tasteless mostly. All in all we won't go back again.

Generous servings in a nice relaxed atmosphere. Food quality of the Nasi Goreng was superb. Very attentive staff helping enjoy our dining experience

Nothing like a good fusion. This James St gem is a must. Well thought menu, decent pricing, large portions paired with fast and friendly service.
Tasha Krishna
The food here is very average and overpriced. We ordered the duck pancakes, chicken potstickers and satay skewers. The dumplings and skewers were dry and flavourless. The duck was basically inedible when it came saturated in a sickly sweet sauce.

Service was also terrible. Our waiter looked like she was living in her own nightmare and could not have more rude and unhelpful.
Bridget
I love Chow House! Was tossing up where to go for breakfast on my birthday so headed into James St for a look around. Thought I would visit after forgetting about this gem for 2 years. After looking over the extensive breakfast menu I could not go past bacon, poached eggs, waffles and hollandaise sauce. 4 of my favourite things in one dish, best birthday present ever. The bacon eggs Benedict waffle came out looking perfect. Couldn’t fault this place! Perfect start to my day.

After our meaty meal at Ribs n Rumps we came over here for coffee and dessert. Wait staff are friendly and the Barista has time for a chat. I eventually decide on my dessert and we place our orders.

Coffee is served and my large double shot Cafe Latte hits the spot! Hot, strong and flavoursome, this large mug of coffee keeps me drinking for 15 minutes. Paul Chan seems happy with his single shot Cafe Latte. No complaints from him. The Carrot Cake is unusually firm and dense but I quite like this cake. Thank you Chow House!
Glutenfreegirl
Thoroughly enjoyed lunch at Chowhouse. When I asked if they have gluten free options they brought me a separate gluten free menu. Plenty of dishes were already gf or could be modified. I had a chicken satay skewer to start and Nasi Goreng (modified with gf soy sauce) for main. Generous portions, good vibe, friendly and fast service, reasonably priced and food was delicious. My partner had the Nasi Goreng and a tortilla (not gf) to start.

Decent choices of mains, lovely taste and nicely garnished. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff made it a lovely catchup with friends. The only thing which made me a bit disappointed was the service, My food and drink been served at least 15min later than others although we all ordered at the same time. Would definitely return though....@Jonathan McCowen

Came in for breakfast with a group. I ordered the porridge which was delicious and I would definitely come back and order it again. The coffee was good too.

So disappointed and horrified to find raw chicken served up to us here tonight! It is totally not acceptable. Hoping we won't end up with salmonella!
Manuel
Had the duck pie and salad. The salad had sugar toffee on top of it. When the waitress raised it with the chef she said she just got a blank stare back. Never again

Had a Wednesday night dinner for my husband's birthday joined by our 4 adult sons and a partner. Food was nicely presented flavoursome and the servings were hearty which went down well with hungry men on a cold night. Staff were attentive and obliging and the street ambience was warm and welcoming. The only think that I would improve on was some heating but then it was one of Brisbane's first real winter nights.
Jessica Edwards
Looking for a great breakfasr with an asian twist this is the place to be. Enjoyed every bite and husband wants to go back for dinner asap. Delish!
🍴
Had the salmon on potato cake which was delicious. My friend had the avocado on toast which had the most generous serving of avocado I honestly have ever seen. Seemed to be more than a whole avocado on the plate. Great service and meals were delivered quickly. Definitely will be back.

Sweet spot:
Good food and delicious smoothies and juices. I particularly enjoyed the Metaboliser. Nice kick with the chillies in it.
I was very excited to see pierogis on the menu. It was delicious but i still prefer the regular white flour and plain sour cream for the perogis.
The nasi goreang and the roast pork belly with green tea noodles were nice. I think the green tea noodles could do with a little less rice wine vinaigrette.
Nevertheless, me and my friends enjoyed our meal.
The crew are great...friendly and accomodating.
The cafe is open and and spacious.
Joey Cheng
Great place, you must try the fritters. Drinks amazing, my friend said the banana smoothie was the best he has ever tasted. Breakfast burritos where massive.
M & M
Beautiful service, lovely management and owners. M & I came here for a late breakfast and enjoyed it. Was fresh, tasted good with great presentation. Modern and tasteful - I'll have to return to try their lunch menu.

Came here for a team brekkie.
Good location that I believe is prob over looked. Staff were very attentive and were great at offering options.
Good was lovely. I can't fault it. Servings were also pretty good.
Katherine Gehrke
Interesting menu, with prices that end up being pretty reasonable for the quality of food and ingredients we received. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, but also professional. Very stylish!
Brisfoodiefangirl
Had a lovely work breakfast here this morning. The staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. The only bad thing is that it is very open and with all the work going on across the road it gets very dusty!
Peruvian Palate
This place offers really good value for money and the service is great. Their portion sizes are very generous. The duck pancakes are delicious and you get so much duck in them. They come deep fried with a beautiful sauce. Will order again. Satay chicken was nice but needed a bit more of those pickled veggies. The pork belly had a great crackle on the top, unfortunately the layer of fat wasn't rendered enough so had to cut it off. Green prawn curry was phenomenal. Will be coming back to try their breakfast menu as well.

Randomly went to Chow house today for brunch. Ordered some pancakes for my daughter they where very nice , as well as the corn fritters . Everything was delish. The service was very good . Will go back again for dinner :)

We arrived before the rush to get a quick lunch. We ordered three identical meals. Two arrived quite quickly, the third did not. We waited a little, and then enquired - oh, yes, no problem, the third meal is on its way. A long time passed, and no third meal. We enquired again, the manager this time - the server is a trainee, she got the order wrong. Much more time passed (much, much longer than the initial wait), and the meal arrived. No apology, no offer of a drink or price reduction, no nothing. Go to one of the other James St. Restaurants, this one doesn't care about you at all.
Rebecca
A nice little place in Fortitude Valley. The breakfast had a nice little fusion twist with a hint of wasabi in the sauce. I think I will be back to try the dinner menu
QueenElsa
My partner and I have been here twice for breakfast. Such a shame because the food is always good but both times the service was disgraceful. Both times they have moved us to another table halfway throughout, and forgotten to look after us from that point. Moved us so a larger group could come in, but then left our cutlery and water glasses and also didn't take our orders. 3 tables around us got their drinks before us, even though we ordered well before them. The breakfast meal (for 2 people) took 1 hour and 15 minutes. Not Impressed! Wont be going back!
Lawz_1
Went for breakfast this morning and had to wait an hour for two meals - not even two complicated meals: bacon and eggs, and a breakfast burrito. While the place was extremely busy, we saw many tables order after us and get their meals before us, but we never got any sort of explanation for why it was taking so long.
When the meals did arrive, the requested crispy bacon looked like it had barely seen a fry pan, the poached egg was cold and potato rosti was undercooked.
Really disappointed - particularly given how expensive the place is. The burrito was tasty, but not worth the money or the time.
I don't think we'll be going back...
Enzo S
The mini pork bun xeo was good but the pork was somewhat ruined by too much salt. Chicken satay was nice but I would have preferred it served with rice instead of bread. Peeling duck pancakes were great and salt & pepper calamari was amazing! I'd come again.
Catdog
Randomly walked in for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Tried the peking duck pancakes, salted fried squid, and mini pork banh xeo. All three dishes were delicious with complex flavours, particularly the pork was really yummy! I'd definitely go back.

Chow house is a great place to come with friends for dinner and cocktails. I came here with three other friends and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The duck pancakes and Pork rice pancakes were a favourite! Between the four of use we ordered 4 small bites and 2 mains which we felt was enough food. The cocktails were also delicious and it was just a really nice atmosphere eating outside on James street.
Hungrygirl
The food tastes good if they get it right. I've been twice now with my partner. 1st time both drinks and 1 meal wrong. 2nd time another main meal wrong and the same cocktail wrong. If they don't have all main ingredients they should be telling us not making it without! Who makes an old fashioned without the bitters??). After telling us they wouldn't charge for the main meal they stuffed up (nasi goreng with chicken, unfortunately overpriced and not great tasting) they did, as well as an Extra side dish we did not have and a $2 tip they did not deserve. Check your receipt as well as the eftpos machine very carefully because the tip was not on the receipt but has been taken from my card. Sneaky incompetent aholes. If you have to eat there order the prawns but check they aren't stealing extra money from you, the meals are overpriced as it comes.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch at Chow House today with some friends. Such a great menu. We all decided on something from the street food section. The waiter happily told us that the duck pancakes were the best so a couple of us took his advice and were not disappointed. Chow House has excellent staff, a great location, a tasty menu and good price point. I know I'll be back.

Great cafe. The breakfast burger was delicious. The brioche bun was sweet, fluffy and buttery. Haloumi and bacon was nice and crispy. Would definitely return.

The best restaurant in Brisbane. Not only because the food is always impossibly divine but also because the staff are friendly and go above and beyond for their customers. We went to Chow House a few weeks ago for a Christmas lunch and were all so impressed by the way in which the staff catered to our every need, and with such a welcoming attitude no matter what the request. We have been raving about the food and service for weeks. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a beautiful place to host a luncheon as I have never dealt with such a fantastic business who really care about their customers. Oh and did I mention the food is TO DIE FOR! Thank you for a wonderful experience Chow House x

Quick efficient service. All delivered in 20 mins with entire restaurant full! Fantastic coffee and food. Wonderful vibe about the place with pleasant music. Love watching the people walk by along James street.

Food and staff were fantastic when we arrived mid morning on Sunday. Only thing is the food took about 1 hour to arrive at the table! Otherwise a very pleasant experience

Im pretty much obsessed with Chow House From the first glance of their menu I knew I would love it – healthy, wholesome options available for all tastes and appetites (especially my own). blackbean, tomato + eschallot fricassee on avocado, topped w. soft herbs + sour cream, served w. poached eggs [v]

Had breakfast at Chow House a few weeks ago. The service was very good and our meals arrived on time; however, my family and I thought the portions were extremely small for the price we were paying. Overall, pretty good experience.

It's an Asian twist cuisine but I didn't get to order their Asian dish. It's actually really good compare to other average restaurant. I would definitely make a return to try their Asian dish! Looks good from what other people have ordered.

Vanilla
If you like something different for breakfast with an Asian twist this is your place. A little hit and miss in terms of consistency & you may find pricing vs size of portion is a little on the + vs - side. The place may look packing from the street however there is inside as well! A staple along James St for a good chow!
Misscharlot
FUSION to me, and i personally don't really like fusion food. Sorry. but i am impressed they have young coconut drink on the menu, and that's what i ordered.
Eatingtheweekaway
It'll do if all you want is 'chow' but if that's all that you're after then money could be spent more wisely. Menu is asian inspired with some highs such as the tapioca dumplings, pork sausages coupled with some lows such as the peanut butter on toast and that packet salad that pervades almost all the dishes.
Service is inattentive and distracted at best.

Waking up a little later today to the most gorgeous sunshine outside, had me wanting to head somewhere a bit lively for a late brunch, so we decided James St would fit the bill. We decided to wing it and just go for a walk and see where appealed and so we ended up at ChowHouse ... pretty much because it looked nice from outside!

We were a little too late for the breakfast menu - so we will go back and try that sometime - so we chose from the lunch menu. I went with the lemongrass chicken baguette and hubby was keen for a steak sandwich - washed down with a passionfruit mule (hey it was after noon, a cocktail on a sunny Sunday just seemed right).

Firstly I have to say the fitout of the place is great - obviously very inviting - and service was prompt and friendly. The place was fairly busy with most tables taken. The mules were out in good time - we first discovered these in an amazing japanese restaurant in Bangkok called "In the Mood for Love" ... still makes us smile to think that a name like that could cause issues on credit card bills lol ... and these mules were pretty good. Fresh and juicy with plenty of passionfruit.

All the food going out around us looked and smelt amazing, so my mouth was watering by the time our meals arrived. Well wow! Hubby enjoyed his streak sandwich which came with haloumi on it, but said it could have used some sauce as he found it a little dry - he said he would have perhaps like the pickled onions that were in the side salad, on the actual burger - why he didn't just do this himself I have no idea. I also don't know why he didn't just add some sauce - he had requested some to go with the shoestring fries - who can figure men out sometimes.

My lunch was definately the pick of the day - a lovely crunchy baguette loades with salad, plump perfectly cooked chicken, peanut satay sauce and corriander. Seriously seriously good - don't forget to remove the lemongrass skewers before you dig in though. This would have to be one of the best sandwiches I've had in quite a while and perfect for a warm sunday lunch.
Very impressed with ChowHouse and no doubt we will return again - I want to give that breakfast menu a whirl.
Kat - Oats And Cheesecake
After discovering this gem during the Marie Claire Up Late event this year, it's safe to say we've been making up for lost time! I've visited more times than I can remember and the food has been outstanding every time, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A clear stand out for me though has been the duck pancake. Good grief, it's incredible!
Talksalot
Delish food that you can share. The chicken satay skewers were amazing. I'd give it a five but staff need to pop a smile on their faces.
Went to try this place partly because of friend's recommendation and partly because the miss of Jame Street Bistro. It was a busy lunch so I do not want to critic on the not quite attentive service. Looked at the menu then made me not quite exciting on their fusion Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian .... Asian food idea. Prices are slightly high but quite average to the competitors around. Dishes definitely would not attract my taste buds due to lack of character. My suggestion is to think about focusing on one cuisine and modify dishes with new ideas like Longtime.
Paul Chiu
Reasonably good for modern Asian cuisine. However, for the prices charged there are better options around.

Service wax fine. As others have noted it did take a long time for the food to arrive.
Steph
Wasn't overly impressed.. The coffee was great but wasn't a fan of the food. We weren't there at a particularly busy time, but ordered a second round of coffee that never came yet we were charged for it. Food took forever to get to us and when it did, it was the wrong order. I'm sure they were just having an off day as the friend who I was with had been before and loved it.
Corbyknowles
Yes. Super impressed, my tastebuds were very satisfied, every bite was dancing on the tongue, will definitely be back
Shrabean
Good place for a relaxed Sunday lunch. Covered yet open court yard to enjoy the Brisbane weather.

Lots of options for tapas, which I love. Able to share and taste different things.
Our favorites
Asian Slaw
Chicken with Glass Noodles spring rolls
Croquettes with interesting and tasty condiments

Given it is James Street, as expected the coffee (Veneziano) was quite good.
Desmond Ho
Over priced, hit & miss dishes!. Went to try this restaurant coz it seems to be always crowded. The service & food are hit & miss! Long wait for the waiter to take the order, but food arrived fast. Entree are nice but my noodle is hard.
Kieran
Went here for dinner and the meals and cocktails were very disappointing. Nice staff but food was a major letdown.
Paul
Went to Chowhouse on Saturday night for a night out with my partner. Sat inside in the air conditioning. Ordered entrees that were delicious! However we didn't really didn't enjoy the mains due to the banging and yelling coming within the kitchen. Decided to go elsewhere for desserts.
Robert Sharp
Horrible service. Service is awful, staff clearly take no pride in their work. Ordered a lactose free coffee only to find out afterwards that they didn't use lactose free milk. Wait staff actively ignored us after our initial order. Plates were removed before we had finished eating. Never again
Emmapc1234
Bland food complemented by poor service. We went for a pre film dinner... Huge mistake. The waiter announced - twice - it was only his second night and so couldn't tell us anything about the food. So far so brisbane, but the food descriptions seemed interesting enough: Asian inspired and referencing lots of vegetables. What arrived was 4 of the blandest stodgy dishes I have ever tasted. Bad bad bad. Do NOT bother. You are better off at Gerard's or Cru any night of the week.
Nuraybuyucek
Very bad service!. Having lunch there at the moment. Serving staff is terrible! No communication between staff. For one drink order w soy milk, we had three different staff taking/serving wrong orders.. Plus; staff us quite distracting! If you wanna have a chat, don't go there!
Lolita Sillars
Casual, friendly dining experience. Food was fresh, flavoursome and very affordable. 8/10
Erin_l_hansen
Good food, unhappy staff. I'm not sure what they do to the staff in this place but no one cracked a smile or made any attempt to be friendly. The food was pretty good though. My pork belly was a tiny bit dry but mostly delicious. The Nasi Goreng was excellent.

Amazing breakfast and coffee
Aaron Clark
The waiters could not be more disinterested in serving you, the glasses were dirty, the food totally over priced for what you get. Blugh never again

Highly recommend! The Yellow lamb curry is delicious, the service really good and the atmosphere is lovely. I will be back

Bad servise, awful food!
ABelchy
Tasty food, woeful service. .... Tasty food, woeful service.
We took a friend here from Sydney for Sunday brunch and we were impressed with the decor, it was very inviting as a nice spot to sit.
Ordered food, juice and coffee. Coffees were burnt, bitter and required sugar to be drinkable. Food came out, corn fritters yum, eggs benedict ok nothing special and a mixed grill which was great except for the dry over done piece of steak (had asked for medi rare) not a bit of pink to be seen.
Service was woeful, dirty glasses and cups left on the table no one came back after we had our food to ask if we wanted anything else or to clear the dirty plates. When we mentioned it upon paying the excuse was we're busy, of course you were it was sunny Brisbane Sunday that's not an excuse for crap inattentive service. If you want to charge $30 for a breakfast you need to at least clear dirty dishes. Food was nice but I won't bother coming back, this place needs to realise service is part of dining out.
Henry
Rude staff & ordinary food.. 8 of us went for dinner last night - all of us were disappointed - the food was ok.. But leaning towards ordinary for the price.. Strange combinations & without elements as described on the menu .. This could have all been forgiven if it wasn't for the rude & off hand wait staff.. In particular the blonde ?european? girl .. Everything we asked her for was met with a sigh & almost an eye roll - we left & chose to have dessert & coffee else where because of her poor customer service skills .. We won't be back - too many other quality options along the James St stretch without the attitude!
Sheri Baby
It's was OK. We went as a group of friends to Chow House & had a ok experience. For what we paid I didn't think the food was that flash. I always enjoy asain food being light with flavor but found all our dishes were really heavy. I had the market fish at $35 which was fresh but unfortunately the curry sauce dominated all the fresh veges & fish.
Our meals were ok but not worth the price tag when you compare with some of the other fantastic places around the James st area.
I had already been told the service was average & we got what we expected & made a point of calling the waiter over when we needed something instead of waiting for any check ins.
Glad I tried ChowHouse, had a nice night but sadly, wouldn't go again.
Gabba Girl
Dinner for 6. Had dinner with 5 friends last night, came in with no booking and were greeted warmly and seated in a great round table outside, lovely decor, comfy seats. I had the Nasi Goreng which was I must say, the best one I have ever had outside of Indonesia, sooo yummy! Friends had the Rendang curry, Buttermilk Chicken, Pork Belly and a duck dish. All said their meals were great. The staff were attentive, meals did take 45 mins to arrive but it was Friday night and we were having fun & didn't really care. We would have stayed for desert but were off to a movie. Will return for sure.
Caitlin
Meals weren't too bad. Steak overcooked from the medium rare requested. Staff were unwelcoming and rude.

James St Bistro was a disaster.
ChowHouse is a huge improvement.
Better service
Better food
Better setting
Try it again haters!!

Awful food n terrible service. Turned my cool day into sad mood

Visited twice over the Easter weekend, once for breakfast and then again for lunch. Both occasions were fantastic - food and service.

Breakfast - I ordered the authentic Thai chicken omlette while my partner ordered the more traditional eggs Benedict. We were both very pleased and my omlette was extremely flavoursome. We also shared the coconut crumpets with (insane!!) lemon curd which were so delicious we had to order another serve - although they had switched to the lunch menu by then but the wait staff and kitchen were more than happy to accommodate our request. All the boys on the floor this day were really lovely and attentive. The coffees were great too.

Lunch - went with the family for Easter lunch and everyone loved their meals ranging from the poached chicken salad, rice paper rolls, duck pancake, chicken baguette and more. We also had a great male waiter who helped me custom make a few of their delicious cocktails to suit my dietary requirements - they were so good!!! We were so happy that we stayed for dessert and again we were not disappointed. The chocolate crepe and affogatto were really yummy.

We look forward to our next visit as there is so much to explore on the menu. Thanks for a memorable Easter Chow House.
High_Expectations
After being a big promoter of this restaurant in the past, I was utterly disappointed on my most recent visit. Service was ok, but the food was dreadful. Reading the menu leaves your mouth watering but don't be fooled. My favourite was the chicken and walnut dumplings served with a side of pure sesame oil that did little to compensate the dryness of the chicken. If you're a mediocre cook at home, don't bother.
Thefunklub
I've had two great breakfasts here now. Coconut yogurt was great with the black beans.
Coconuts
Ordinary. Out of the four share plates we ordered, only one had any semblance of flavour. Nice looking venue but the food is so ordinary I will never return.
Juggler
Some of the best breakfasts on the planet. Perfect steak. Perfect bacon. Perfect poached eggs. Wait was short. Flavours awesome. Staff friendly.

Not my cup of Chow. The ant.... Not my cup of Chow.
The anticipation of meals as sumptuous to taste as they look is exactly that at Chow - anticipation only. The lacklustre flavours leave you with an anti-climactic experience and a sting at the till. We ordered from the Street Chow menu: pork sausage, rice paper rolls, chicken skewers & samosas. Only the sausage had a flavour above that of chewing plain rice and the skewers were underdone. One drink came out with what looked like a sliver of skin stuck to the inside of the glass, I'm sure it wasn't skin but it added to the staircase of disappointment ChowHouse made us climb.
Catherine
Phenomenal. Delicious, fresh food + amazing service + easy-to-find location + great prices = A phenomenal dining experience!!

Good. Keep going guys well done something different for a change is all good.
Thanks for a lovely night.

TERRIBLE! DON'T BOTHER!. I went to this sad excuse for a restaurant on the weekend after seeing some nice reviews about it on instagram.

We got there and were seated within ten minutes which was good since it was only 2 of us. The table was dirty and the waiter who escorted us over saw this but never bothered to come back and wipe it down.

We waited ten minutes to be given menus and water. My boyfriend wanted to order a juice which had grapefruit, grenadine and lychee or similar. He asked if the juice was freshly squeezed or bottled and the waiter specified that all the juices were fresh. We also order the Nasi Goreng (without egg) and the savoury mince and toast with a side of avocado.

The juices came - or at least one was juice. The other was a GRAPEFRUIT TIRO with a piece of lemon in it a remnants of what could have been lychee, but one wouldn't know because we couldn't taste a thing except for the bottled soft drink that was a sad excuse for a juice. We couldn't even ask a waiter about it because there were none in sight! I signaled to a waiter to get his attention and he said "wont be a sec" - and never came back.

We waited 25 MINUTES for our two breakfast dishes and during that time nobody came to check on us. Finally our food arrived - my Nasi Goreng was completely cold and the rice was swimming in a sauce which tasty very fishy and not like proper Nasi Goreng should taste at all! It was bland and have ZERO flavour. My boyfriend's mince on toast arrived with no avocado - and the waiter practically dumped our food on the table and ran - and also didn't bother coming back to check on us. The food was cold on the first bite. After 10 minutes my boyfriend finally found a waiter and asked where his avocado was. The waiter didn't apologise, just looked at the plate, said "Oh yep" and walked off. After 5 minutes he brought half an avocado out which underneath was BROWN! The mince tasted like porky dog food and had no flavour - not even enough salt to the mince at all!

Are you actually kidding me??? How can you be operating in the up market area of James St if you A) Have terrible service and B) CANT MAKE PROPER FOOD!

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! THE FOOD AND SERVICE ARE NOT WORTH THE PRICE!

NOT TO MENTION THAT BECAUSE OF THE AUSTRALIA DAY HOLIDAY THEY HAD A (WAIT FOR IT)...

16.5% SURCHARGE! Who are you kidding!?!??! Most restaurants have between 5 and 10% surcharge. Ridiculous!

The italian looking girl waiter was the only welcoming staff member who offered us something for free, to which I declined.

Rubbish food and service. Don't bother.

-----28 Jan, 2014-----

TERRIBLE! Don't waste your time.

Chow do you do?. Food was tasty but there wasn't much atmosphere. Maybe it was because I was sitting by my lonesome. A place you might visit but only if you were in the area.

onceonly/10 !

Great Gluten-Free Breakkie Choices. Chowhouse has a good range of GF breakfast choices and moreover, the waitstaff appreciate GF requirements and were very helpful in suggesting other dishes with ingredients changed out to make GF. Staff for mid week Breakkie service were helpful and cheerful. Food fresh with many choices and interesting combinations. Just loved my mushroom dish. Coffee that day was awesome, just had to have three! I will be back for lunch!

Fabulous food, great service!. We had a great breakfast at Chow House once again this morning. Lots of interesting things on the menu as well as traditional favorites. We ordered the breakfast burrito for my partner and I had Corn, potato and coriander fritters with halloumi. They were both delicious with generous portions. Would definitely recommend.

Hit and miss. I have been here a few times and it's a hit and miss. We live around the corner, so we decided to come for breakfast the other day... we love the decor and overall feel of the place and how convenient the location is for us. My avocado on sour dough was fantastic but my partner got Egg's Benedict and it was just one egg on a tiny little piece of bread. I get that you're going for the whole "minimalist" feel with your food... but seriously? Change the name to Egg Benedict on your menu! :(

ChowHouse - Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Not many places put the emphasis so much on casual dining, even when they are very much so. With this idea in mind, ChowHouse allows itself to not only work but be high-quality in its aim. It is one of the most stylishly casual places that I can remember being to. The service here is well-organised and lovely, they have a massive amount of space for dining. From a simple glance, it is an inference that they use a tablet to plan out seating arrangements; if it was a tablet, it was not needed at that time due to the less hectic workload at the time.

After a rush to Brisbane from the northern coast, I met my old friend in the city to head off elsewhere for some brunch. Heading for Fortitude Valley, the two of us were walking about the main road in search of somewhere to go. With most places invariably not open, this place was - and busy as a result - thus thinking "good enough" this was chosen. The meal here was pretty darn good, as was the coffee.

One of the benefits of location, is the adjacent view towards the cinema. It is certainly in the happening hub, where a good night out can be done with safety (i.e. dinner and a movie). Also, if anyone needs to go ....... fill in the blank. Some great urban planning went into this area of the city in recent times.

It was around brunch time, which meant the breakfast menu was the current one to order from. With a keen eye and wanting to expand tastes as far as possible, I looked at the specialties menu. Two items there were taking my fancy and it came down to a coin-flip to decide. The Breakfast Burrito won. Inside was slow-cooked braised beef, which was delicious and tender. It had been infused in its own juices for quite sometime and made for a fantastic filling all wrapped in a house-made flour tortilla. For a while I thought it was more of a chimichanga. On top there was a tomato salsa and some avocado, both freshly made and healthy. Odd, but they serve a poached egg on the side and I ordered a potato rosti to go with. The potato rostis were finger shaped and really crispy, almost to the extent that they probably were made to be finger food. As usual, with a runny yolk the poached egg was really delicious and the tortilla did a good job mopping up the yolk. It was a substantial breakfast.

I got the usual double cappuccino to drink. They make quite nice coffee here. It had a moderate strength to it and a pleasant flavour without any bitterness. The cappuccino was done in the traditional manner without any chocolate powder on top.

How this place has been arranged shows astute planning. It is central in location, there is the laid-back vibe of dining and they do not compromise for quality in food and service. Giving the best of both worlds, you have the familiar variety for diners and those who like a bit of something different are also covered. The post-breakfast menu definitely looks worth trying out. This place is totally worth trying out, movie or no movie.

Ok food but service terrible. Expensive too.

Pretty good.. After reading the reviews on here I wasn't expecting much when my wife asked me to take her to chowhouse for a Thursday morning breakfast but I was pleasantly surprised on the friendly and efficient staff.
I enjoyed my duck omelet and my wife was impressed with her eggs benedict, but I would have to agree with some of the reviews on here about the lack of salmon and spinach on the eggs benedict. Overall I would definitely recommend chowhouse and I will return.

Yum. Went for lunch last week. The lemongrass chicken skewers with peanut sauce were large, tender and tasty. Paw paw salad fresh and light. Salt and pepper calamari tasty and tender. Peking duck pancake delicious. We chose all the "street foods" and shared. We also had the spring rolls that were generous in size and delicious. Along with a bottle of white and sparkling mineral water, cost was $110 which was excellent. We were completely full. Service was good and friendly. We did sit towards the back, opposite the kitchen which was great to see the meals coming out but it did start to warm up mid afternoon. Good value. This is the second time I have been here. We will be back.

Pricey and slow.... We didn't enjoy our experience at ChowHouse. The place was full of pretentious people. Fantastic service from the two male wait staff who served us, they were very attentive. My salmon dish was nice but Mr B's pork sandwich was bland and lacked flavour. My fresh orange juice was also watered down (did they run out of oranges?). The food took quite sometime to come out, I was sitting there twiddling my thumbs. Customers who came after us had their meals served before us. Unfortunately, we won't be returning.
EM Moody
Bad food. Staff member chased us across the street saying we hadn't paid when we had. Need to pay more attention to customers. Wouldn't go back if someone paid me to.
Jacky Benazzi
Food was way overpriced for the amount and quality. We wanted to try something new as Harvey's was booked out so we tried Chowhouse but will never return. Service was standard if that and food was really average.
T2
Worst food ive ever experienced. Everything is cold.
Prawn rice paper roll seems like it was rolled yesterday.
Chicken noodle was probably made from the day before as well.
Never again in my life that I would come back. Chow house's food is more like for jailhouse
Ballerina
5/10. Not a very welcoming place to stop off - coffee not great, I ordered from the menu sdough and homemade jam; the bread was uninteresting and cut very thin (two small slices) the jam was very nice but for the cost it's not a place I would make a point of visiting.

Stopped in for breakfast around 9:30am on a Sunday. Staff were very unattentive, with a number of tables having to hail staff down to order, clear plates etc. Food was good but not fantastic given the prices and the pretentious vibe given off. Coffee was below average too.
Would I return based on this experience?? No.
Jc
Hmmm.... Food presentation was definitely impressive, though the taste to most dishes are nice but nothing fantastic. The place does have a great ambience and a couple of friendly waitresses, except for one who just couldn't wait to clear our dishes while we're still enjoying the last bits to our dishes.

Highly unlikely to return, as prices can be a little dear and wasn't up to expectations.
Sarah
Wow!. After reading the Courier Mail review last weekend, we decided to try the ChowHouse for ourselves...and so glad we did! Food, service, and overall ambiance was amazing. Our table of 6 were all brought our dishes promptly, and no one left unsatisfied. Fully recommend the Pork Belly as it was out of this world. Starters included a mixed selection of dumplings, duck pancakes and chicken satay skewers, and again, all delicious.
We will definitely be back :-)

Good breakfast. Had a nice breakfast here on Saturday with some girlfriends. We had the eggs benedict with salmon (full serve - wouldn't have liked to have seen how little salmon was on the half serve!), poached eggs with bacon, avocado and labne and a fruit toast. Coffee was pretty good (by Melbourne standards!) and service was fine. Would definitely come back.
Belle
First timer at ChowHouse and was really impressed! It definitely exceeded my expectations. The decor is wonderful and has a relaxed feel to it with the dimmed lighting.
The service is professional and staff are friendly, approachable and attentive.
Our meals took some time before coming out, however they were well worth the wait. We shared a rib eye fillet and a Haloumi crumbed chicken schnitzel. Both delicious and good portions - not too much, not too little.
Overall very impressed and will visit again!

Still waiting for our meals .... Still waiting for our meals
Wouldn't usually think to give a negative review on urban spoon but the service at this place was atrocious. After telling the waitress we were going to a movie and wanted something quick and easy we proceeded to order. We were then ignored by the large number of staff walking around until 30 minutes later when we asked how long our food would be. We were told our order had been lost and that if we wanted to come back after the film they'd find a table for us. No thanks!!

Amazing Breakfast. We stumbled upon this eatery by chance and what a terrific find! We were greeted warmly, seated and offered coffee immediately. The coffee blend was great, and our requests for extra hot were hit spot on. The breakfast menu is extensive and boasts the classics as well as some completely different options that are so tempting. I had trouble deciding and asked our waitress for her tips. Normally I met with a nervous giggle and "I don't know, they are both good" insipid responses, but our waitress had no hesitation in recommending the omelette with ham and spinach, and shared that the tomato chutney offered with this dish was especially good. I am so pleased to have taken her advice! The omelette was fluffy, laden with the key ingredients and the chutney was out of this world! I don't even like chutney as a general rule!!! I have no hesitation in recommending this eatery and your exceptional offerings and outstanding staff should serve you well!

Meh - it's okay. After hearing great reviews from friends who went for lunch we thought we'd give it a go for dinner. I first went to a Timmy Kemp restaurant in Clayfield about 20 years ago and have always held her in high esteem.

The flavour of the duck with porcini mushrooms on pasta was okay, unfortunately it had been sitting waaay to long under the 'hot lights' whilst waiting to be brought to the table and one side of the duck was horrendously dry (which I mentioned to the waiter who did nothing about it). Thankfully my partners Green curry was delicious.

The wine list was filled with unknown wines and unfortunately the staff were uneducated about them. Note to restauranteurs, it's all very well to go with boutique wines but you really need to have some switched on staff to help diners with their selection.
Food Glorious Food
Deboned quail with Asian slaw = ok
Grain fed eye fillet rare = yummy
Kale, pumpkin, grilled haloumi with organic labneh salad = really yummy
Lime brûlée with poached rhubarb and berries = perfect
Would love to go back and try the other dishes and would not hesitate to recommend to friends

Terrible. A restaurant with a confused identity. Asian dishes served with roast potatoes. "Dumplings" served with a thick, stodgy coating that reminded me of suet pudding. It is like the chef has heard about Asian food, and maybe flicked through a cookbook once, but has never actually eaten it in their life. Very strange, overpriced food and underwhelming drinks. Will not return.
Edna
Fail. The staffs attitude was appalling. Food was ok-ish. I will not be returning here again as there are many other restaurants in the area with much more welcoming staff and tasty foods.

Bits of Asia with bits of the west. Sunday lunch was very tasty. Although kitchen was a bit slow the wait staff were friendly and efficient. The variety of dishes were vast and everything was cooked extremely well. Would go again.

Just plain awful. Really did not enjoy the experience here. poor service attitude, expensive and I wont be back. plenty of other options in this part of town

Never Again. Went for breakfast. Waited 25 minutes for coffee and had to remind them we were still waiting. Food cold and unappetising. Service awful. Staff looked as though they couldn't be bothered.

Overpriced and still hungry. Are you kidding me? $20 for Nasi Goreng and it was a small portion served in an oversized bowl. The food took well over half an hour to arrive and the quantity was lacking for the price. I won't be returning.

Had a fantastic dinner there tonight! What a fabulous meal from enter to desert! I'll be back!!!!

Decide to take the family for breakfast on a busy Saturday morning.we arrived to find Chowhouse pumping! Thinking that we wouldn't possibly get a seat we were about to leave when a staff member smiled at us and mouthed just a moment. Within 5 minutes we were seated and enjoying a great coffee.
We love Chowhouse and will definitely return. The atmosphere is fun and friendly.

Amazing!. Went to ChowHouse today and was absolutly amazing! Food was delicious and I really enjoyed the duck pancake, great value for money! Loved the atmosphere and the service were friendly and fabulous. Would definitely go back and recommend for all!

Decided to go for lunch with 3 work colleagues. The restaurant was only have full when we arrived. There were : waitresses floating around but no one seemed to notice us. So we found our own table. We waited again for someone to notice us and had to call someone over just to get a menu. The young waitress was pleasant and polite. Our drinks came quickly and were served by an older lady who did not crack a smile or say a word and plonked our drinks on the table. Our food was tasty. We had the duck burger, nasi goreng, duck pancake and samosa - all good. i would come back to try the breakfast menu and its a great location to people watch. But the service was lack lustre, emotionless and not welcoming.

Should be called CowHouse for the "udder" disappointment. I always liked James St Bistro. The service wasn't always the best, but the food was good. So when JSB morphed into ChowHouse, I thought something even better might be in store. Like better service, for example. Boy, was I disappointed. To make a long story short and save all the readers from having their eyes glaze over, here's what happened:
- We were seated after people that arrived after us. (Two in each party, no reservations.)
- The meal took over 30 minutes to arrive. No one checked in on us during that time.
- The toast was burnt and cold. The tomato was shrivelled and cold. The poached eggs were overcooked and barely warm.
- No one ever bothered to ask whether we needed anything else or were enjoying our meals.
- The guy at the counter was borderline rude in asking what we wanted when we went to pay.
In conclusion, shame on you, ChowHouse. You're making Vroom look good. And that's really hard to do.

Friendly, Fresh and Fabulous. Went in for Dinner last night after a stroll down the busy James Street (some sort of show on), Even with the restaurant packed and buzzing but a person greeted us as we entered and managed to seat us even though they were so full!! which was miuch appreciated.Staff were amazing, Food was fresh and delicious. When paying, the girl thanked us for coming and walked us out and told us to come back soon! Which we will!! 10/10!!

Chow down. Lunch at the ChowHouse was a tasty if slightly pricey affair. Two of us shared 4 dishes. The satay chicken was delicious, I'd return for the accompanying pickled veges alone. The nasi goreng was generous and tasty, great chilli sauce. Asian slaw was light and fresh. The dumpling filling was a bit flavourless and mushy although the crispy tapioca coating was inventive. We found the service to be friendly and prompt. The same amount of dishes would be half the cost on China Town but we knew this was the fancy end of the Valley and the considered, vibrant flavours and stylish surrounds enhanced the experience. Desserts look delicious, we'll try these next time.

I went earlier this month for lunch and ordered the haloumi, kale and roast pumpkin salad. Divine!!!! I raved for weeks and brought a friend specifically to try the salad. How utterly disappointing!!!! Gone was the caramelized pumpkin, gorgeous dressing with little morsels of kale where every mouthful was a joy. In its place was soggy steamed pumpkin, yellow and chunky (frankly inedible) kale leaving a bitter after taste from the food and the experience. If anyone had been interested in us sufficiently to ask how our meals were I would have given feedback at the time. I hope they get their mojo back.

Great Service. After reading some reviews deriding the service, I was wary of visiting ChowHouse but in fact the service was excellent. Our group of 4 decided to share the Street-Food items which were all delicious- the green papaya salad our only disappointment . The desserts all had that 'Timmy" flair- an Asian twist on old favourites. After prolonged lingering without any pushing from the delightful staff we left- and made plans for a breakfast return visit.

Really great and fresh food. Some of the dumplings were a bit disappointingly heavy but the duck pancake is amazing! Great and attentive service.

Went for dinner on Saturday night and we all had excellent meals.
The steak was one of the best I have had in a long time.
Service was brilliant and will definitely be back.

Went for a lunch on Sat. Good looking place, great position, but disappointing food. I found it dry and without a flavor.

I went here for dinner Friday night. The service was really disappointing.. The atmosphere was flat and dull and the food was lacking for the price. Won't rush back in a hurry!

Quality. Really nice mode.... Quality.

Really nice modern atmosphere with menu to suit. Best coffee on James St too.

VERY over priced food - pork belly rice paper rolls were dry, calamari & satay chocken portions were minuscule, with chicken super dry. Will not be returning.

Con-Fusion. My beef brisket was dry and the flavours confusing, but at least my dish had flavour unlike my friend's salmon which was bland!! Disappointing.
Katie
Will never go back to this awful place. The service is shocking, slow and positively rude. The food was terrible! Who would've thought they could get avocado on toast wrong but they can. And the coffee was stone cold when it came out. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Katherine
Food was great - esp. the beef. service was ok - not good not awful. Toilets were disgusting. really off-putting - shows a lack of care.

Loved it!. A group of 5 of us dined at ChowHouse last night and we loved it! Great portion sizes, awesome atmosphere and the staff were great. A few of us had the eye fillet and highly recommend it. It was tender, juicy and well seasoned. The cocktails are also generously sized so it's a great place to go if food and cocktails is what you're looking for. Will definitely go back again!

Not recommended!. Breakfast was tasty but wait staff shocking - bad attitude!

Chow House, James Street. A friend and I dined at Chow House last night. The food was fresh, delicious, beautifully presented and with subtle, sophisticated Asian flavours.

We shared chicken satay, duck pancakes, sugar cane prawns and a really delectable chicken, coconut and mango salad.

It was perfect food for a hot Brisbane evening and the portion sizes were generous.

I cannot understand the negative reviews at all. They simply do not accord with my experience. I dine out frequently and have travelled extensively in Asia . This food is good by any standards.
Louise
Overall Excellent Experience. Love the hawker style street food. Delicious. Hard to pick a standout but satays, rice paper rolls, & prawn skewers were really good. Nasi goreng excellent. One of the better ones I've had. Duck perfectly cooked. Subtle flavours. Very busy & great atmosphere. Waitress very helpful & made great recommendations. Ticked all our boxes & we will definitely be back.

Dinner review. Very disappointed in this place, lack of customer service, long wait on order, food was overpriced. The duck was overcooked, tough and bland with a tasteless bun on the side and after complaining about this all I got was a sorry and that was it and I was not offered anything else. Not good enough at all this was my first time to visit this place and the last.
Dell
Very disappointed. Beef Salad $25.00. Consisted of lettuce, carrot batons (old), cucumber and steak. Very small, overpriced, too much dressing. Mixed breads consisted of hard over toasted sourdough, Turkish and a breakfast muffin (probably left over from breakfast menu). Chicken Salad $22.00 – Better value, quite nice, again too much dressing and garlic. Fruit and Veggie juices tasted watered down. First and last visit to this venue

Fantastic. Went for lunch on Sunday with a friend. It was fantastic. Food was amazing. Had spring rolls & satay chicken to start with..soo fresh!! We then share a nasi goreng and the eye fillet. Sensational favours. Definitely going back for breakky!! I'm told the crumpets and duck omelette are a must.

1 Hour Wait for Food. Arrived with 2 friends at 6pm on a Friday night. Our waiter was friendly and helpful - took our order straight away.

Waiting over an hour for our food to arrive, which was the basic street food e.g. chips with aioli!! Had cocktails in the meantime.

Nobody came over to explain our food was late or why.
Nobody came over to offer us a free cocktail or drink.
Nobody offered us a discount.

Has the chef ever heard of salt and pepper? This is not Asian food, no flavour what so ever. Even my local dodgy Chinese restaurant taste better then Chow house. On the upside the decor is nice and out waiter was enthusiastic.
Mark
Very busy breakfast session, service was okay, food did understandably take a while to arrive. Nasi Goreng was simply artrocious. Rice, sauce with a few pieces of chicken. Bland. Duck omelette looked good next door. May give it another chance, but def. for snobs paying over the odds for small portions.
Coco
Funky, fast & fabulous. We arrived on a busy post Christmas morning and Chowhouse was bustling. We were promptly seated at a table and given a cold bottle of water.
so far so good. the food arrived quickly considering the place was bursting at the seams.Coconut crumpets, waffles and we particularly loved the half benedict serves. The bircher muesli was moist and plentiful and i can't wait to return and try the nasi goreng.
Chowhouse is exactly what it says it is (an Eating House) casual quick and delightful.

Absolutely appalling service. Toilets are filthy. Food ok. Will not ever go back though, avoid avoid avoid.

It wasn't particularly busy however we. Seated ourselves as no one working there paid attention to our arrival, we had to go go up to the counter to request for our order to be taken, despite it being table service, and request for water several times... another table that arrived at the Same time as us left as they were not being served.
However the food was very good, it's just a dissapointing that the service was poor and that we had to request for our bill 3 times before getting fed up and going to the counter to pay.

Took the family and we all enjoyed it great place for a Sunday lunch or a couples dinner.

Yum. Second time there in two weeks - love the menu - especially the crumbed oysters & the duck pancakes. Only complaint is the service is a little slow but the food is well worth the trip.

New Kid on the Block. Chow House.

After eating Breakfast, Lunch and dinner here multiple times i knew that this is now my new favourite food destination. I particularly love the green wall and street bar which gives this restaurant a whole new dimension. The Nasi Goreng is to die for and worth coming back for time and time again. I highly recommend you try Chow House if your looking for something a bit different.
( If you can get a table )!

Seeing this place recently open just down the street, my friend and I decided to try it out for lunch. However we regretted to do so as much as we did visiting the James street Bistro. The service here was atrocious. We were first of all rushed to order after sitting down for a mere 2 minutes and when we wanted to order no wait staff (even after seeing us) would come serve us. We then ordered proceeded to order 3 side dishes and 2 main dishes. After waiting 30 minutes of waiting ad seeing our meals sit on the counter for a good 5 minutes, our meals came out. Most of them being quite good. I liked the ribs and the chilli bread w/ peanut jam, but their pickled salad is far too salty so you must be aware. However one of the dishes came out was wrong and we asked them to changed this for us as my friend is pregnant and cannot eat it. After waiting another 15 minutes the dish came out, which we ate and then proceeded to the counter to pay. After paying we realised we were charged for an item they got wrong so we went back. The waiter who served us did not look very happy and did not even apologize. Even though the food was alright I do not think I will ever be visiting ChowHouse again. Though this should have been expected as They are the same owners of the previous James St Bistro, which is renowned for their appalling customer service. You're better off taking a good trip to McDonalds.

Eastern Delight. Today I went to ChowHouse for lunch and it was the third time I've been there since it opened, having been for both dinner and breakfast previously. Having just dined at Luke Nguyen's Fat Noodle last night put this dining experience into a better perspective. Whilst they are both completely different offerings, they are still targeting modern Asian dining, approaching it from two distinct angles.

ChowHouse has a great menu, where you're easily able to share lots of small dishes (as I did for dinner), or choose meals on a more stand-alone basis (as I did today for lunch), and the breakfast menu is intriguing, offering some classics but still throwing in some Asian flare. The chicken roll was my lunch for today and it was quite tasty, and the warm bread was beautiful. I also tried some of the rice paper rolls and the chicken salad. All of the menu items I've tried have been able to hit the contemporary Asian brief, with enough of a hint of the western influence to make them addictive. I can't stop thinking about the duck pancakes, and will definitely get them again next time! I felt like Fat Noodle was trying to be more traditional, and in doing so, the food isn't as tasty and didn't leave you with that compulsion to come back and work your way through the menu like ChowHouse did.

I've also been quite impressed with the drinks. The cocktail menu is refreshing, dispensing from the more common and boring offerings seen. I enjoyed my Blue Jean so much when I dined for dinner, I was compelled to chill out with one this afternoon. It's delicious, and I still don't get how pepper and ginger work that well in a drink, but they do... I also had a very interesting beverage at breakfast, which had lemon grass and kaffir lime leaves. It was unique, delicious and refreshing.

The service has been great all three times. In fact, we weren't even planning to return so quickly for breakfast, but when we first dined for dinner, the waitress was so friendly and engaging, she started telling us about how great the breakfast was. Before we knew it, she was showing us a breakfast menu, we were salivating, and had locked in a breakfast date.

There's still so much more I want to try on the menu. I'm always too full for dessert, but will definitely have to leave space next time! I can see this potentially becoming one of those staple restaurants for me, where I know I'll always be able to get great food/drinks and have an enjoyable dining experience.
Australian Foodie
While I do love a good fine dining experience, I have to say that some of the best foodie experiences are made up of casual catch-ups in a chilled out place over delicious food. This is exactly what you get at Chow House on James St in Fortitude Valley. I recently went here with a group of friends where we cheers-ed, chowed and chatted all night. We started the night with a shared dish: Handmade Chicken and Walnut Dumplings with Black Vinegar and Sesame Dipping Sauce These dumplings were seriously tasty. The walnut added a lovely crunch to to the otherwise soft dumplings and the tart sauce really added to each mouthful. Moving onto the mains, we opted for: Taro Crusted Silken Tofu with Asian Herb and Pickled Vegetable Salad, Roasted Peanuts and Sweet Chilli Peanut Coconut Sauce Chow House Nasi Goring with Chicken The silken tofu was seriously outstanding. Despite ordering duck myself, I had dinner envy over this dish. The lightly fried tofu was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and lush on the inside. If you’re not a big fan of tofu, this is a pretty good intro to what can be done with this vegetarian staple. The nasi goring is usually served with a fried egg on top, but we asked for it sans egg which the Chowseters were happy to oblige us with. We also had: Saffron, Orange and Caramel Pork Belly with Burghul, Beetroot and Orange Segment Salad Twice Cooked Warm Duck Salad with Shallot Pancake, Cashews and Soy Chilli Dressing Both of these dishes were fantastic. The pork belly was served with a sweet, sticky sauce which was a bit rich on its own, but when you had it with the slightly fatty pork it just worked. The caramel sauce cut through the fat and you ended up with a medley of deliciousness in your mouth. The twice cooked duck was done to perfection. It was still moist and had a lovely mix of herbs on the crispy skin. Loved the giant flat shallot pancake it came with as well. By whipping up some fantastic interpretations of Asian street food, Chow House

I had a very quick lunch at Chow House. The chicken colesaw roll was a naughty quick lunch. Shame I can't come back any time soon. The roll was tasty but a colesaw overload!

...Lines of black and white run parallel to lush creepers and vines, whilst the inverted straw baskets add an exotic touch. Welcome to the house of Chow. For Mum, the Duck Special – plated on black stone, a leg and breast of roasted duck with red cabbage and lettuce in a sweet sticky jus. Mine was the Kale, Pumpkin and Labneh Salad – warm, crisp cuts of pumpkin and kipfer potatoes, topped with moist haloumi, labneh dressed kale, and watercress with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar....An impressive taster of Chow House, with clean flavours and contemporary concept. Another visit would be worthwhile to experience the full Chow fun.

I had a great breakfast one morning at Chow House. The blackbean, tomato + eschallot fricassee was delicious, and very filling. Eggs were poached and runny as they should be, the fricassee of the blackbeans added some crunch, the sour cream some tartness and the tomato added just enough sweetness to compliment the shallots. The herbs and sprinkled smoked paprika rounded the dish off nicely. A great dish that I would one day like to recreate at home.

The roasted tomatoes were proper slow roasted tomatoes, ones that had retained their heat and moisture and when I cut into my first piece, the tomato juices exploded out. Even better, the strong flavour of tomato burst on my palate! As good as the eggs and tomato were, the winner on the plate for me was easily the bacon, which was of the highest quality, cooked beautifully with a little bit of a char that just blew my mind!

Modern Asian fare at its best at Chowhouse, Fortitude Valley. Being skeptical of Asian food when served up away from the traditional Asian neighbourhoods has lead us to stay clear of Chowhouse despite its good reviews. Coupled with the fact that breakfast was the chosen meal for our particular visit, this only heightened my skepticism. Luckily Chowhouse not only surprised us, but it surpassed all expectations others have had. Chowhouse is a modern Asian fusion restaurant located in the James Street Precinct, aka foodie heaven. With a prime position next to the Palace cinemas, Chowhouse is easy to find. Breakfasts are big business in this locale and therefore an Asian breakfast option was sure to please all palates. Enter Chowhouse, an answer to all the questions of, "why not eat Asian food for breakfast?" Their Asian inspired chef specialties such as the corn, potato and coriander fritter served on a bed of pumpkin and haloumi laced with a pumpkin and lime chutney (featured below) an

Chow House's lunch menu has strong Asian influences with dishes like rice paper rolls, peking duck, sichuan quail and nasi goreng. Think Asian street food, cooked fancy and served in a casual dining scene. Mango and Passionfruit Frappe, Pineapple Lime and Coconut Frappe These were very nice frappes, adequately sweet and very creamy. They reminded me of the smoothies you can get from Boost. Kristine had the lime, coconut and pineapple frappe. She loved it. I'm not a fan of pina colada but this was pretty much a smoothie vers

Bustling and busy, Chow House is the perfect spot to relax over brunch or coffee. Located in up-market James St, Chow House has clean, crisp furnishings and oozes style. Plus it is the perfect place to people watch - with its large outdoor dining area. The staff were generally attentive, although on one occasion our meals came out without cutlery and those salt and pepper shakers were a bit dodgy!
Breakfast in the swanky James Street precinct in the Fortitude Valley was perfect for a reunion/slash catch up with one of my good friends I had met on my internship in Shanghai recently. I chose Chow House for venue, as it has been much hyped about since it's recent opening. Interior wise, it's quite spacious, with high ceilings, and a neutral-wooden tone colour scheme. Outside, it's got the relaxed backyard patio aura about it. The place appeals to people from all walks of life: tradies having their coffee, corporate types digging into a meal before their nine-to-five run, and those who have spare time to drive out this far for breakfast. Staff are somewhat unenthused, abrupt and to the point, having requested to take our orders way to quick after being seated with menus. They could probably use a cup of coffee themselves to get them up and going. Today, I had the confit duck with open potato omelette, and an orange juice - freshly squeezed at that. The omelette was served with spicy

The hanoi pork belly and prawn rice paper roll is gluten free and the portion is 3 servings. This made for some awkward butter knife hacking, so the SO and I could have half of the last roll. I hadn’t expected the hanoi pork belly to be as crunchy as it was, but it was a great textural difference to the soft rice paper skins and zingy blend of herbs and dipping sauce.

Chow House is conveniently located in the centre of the James Street precinct, where James Street Bistro used to be and it provides hawker styled food. The breakfast menu offers a wide selection of traditional breakfast options, but you can also get Asian specialities like Nasi Goreng ($17) andblack sticky rice pudding with fresh mango and coconut cream($12) and that's what we had for breakfast.

Caramelised pork belly with star anise, crisp pigs ear, watercress, lychee and orange salad was our final dish. The pork belly piece was large and immensely sweet, especially when drizzled in honey and accompanied with lychees, but the crackling on top was nicely crunchy.

We liked Chow House for the variety of food available and casual dining environment. The food was OK for me; some dishes were good and some were average but there wasn't anything too exceptional as a whole. I think this place is more about having fun and getting a feed before a night out than about the actual food.

Another exciting new cafe has recently opened on James St - a precinct of fine food and delicacy! We were very lucky to find a car spot right outside of the cafe on this terrible stormy rainy day (this could be one of the worst storms we have since the 2011 flood!), no doubt people wanted to stay cosy at home and importantly safety is the first priority! We were greeted by a lovely staff and got a seat at the alfresco dining area (despite the strong wind it’s pretty well covered and we had no problems with Little Monster staying for the whole breakfast). On the menu it explains what does “ Chow House ” mean? Very interesting! Chow (noun) = informal food; House (noun) = building for human habitation . Haha. I found it quite cute The breakfast menu was divided into two main sections: traditional and specialty . The specialties look quite interesting and I did think about ordering either the nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice) or confit duck with potato open omelette but I t
