Review Two Small Rooms - Brisbane

Kelsey McGahan
Recently held our wedding dinner (with 25 people) here with only a weeks notice to Two Small Rooms and they made it such a beautiful evening. The food was excellent, the staff were warm, attentive and friendly. There was a lot of attention to detail in terms of making the evening run smoothly, and making it feel like an intimate setting, such as how they arranged the tables so everyone could see each other, the lighting, the background music. In terms of the organisation of the event itself, the staff were very responsive and communicative. It is an excellent establishment and I am excited to return for an anniversary dinner there in the future.

Fabulous experience. delicious food. lovely ambiance. professional staff. We chose to celebrate our anniversary at Two Small Room after getting recommended by a colleague. We were not disappointed. At first I was hesitant as I knew French cuisine is famous for their love of butter. Being diary intolerant that was a bit off putting. But I reached out to them and they were very accomodating to my special dietary needs. Two Small Rooms managed to specially design a menu entirely free from diary and that still truely tasted good. for starters my partner had the olives and I, smoked salmon. Olives were warm, savoury and garlicky. Smoked salmon paired nicely with the fresh salad. Main was confit duck and beef wellington. My partner also enjoyed a decadent lavender and honey creme brûlée. Definitely would recommend Two Small Rooms to others looking for good night out.

We booked for a special dinner with friends more than a month ago. Booking confirmed and contact details provided. When we arrived the restaurant was dark and empty. Rain damage apparently so they had weeks to let us know. Appalling way to treat customers.

Last Saturday night we went to dinner at Two Small Rooms which turned out to be a very special night as I was proposed to and I said YES! The waitress was lovely and the Chef made the most delicious food. My fiancee had pre-ordered a beautiful bowl of roses which suited the ambiance of the gorgeous restaurant. I would highly recommend Two Small Rooms for a romantic dinner.

Gorgeous restaurant, very good service but most importantly beautiful food. I had the escargot for entree and the crispy skin quail for main followed by the lemon tart for dessert, all exquisite. The attention to detail is amazing, highly recommend for a quiet night out with excellent quality food and service. ❤️

Today I went to two small rooms with a group of my friends for a high tea to remember . A beautiful home made assortment of goodies and treats were served ,washed down with several cups of delicious tea followed by bubbles. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for something special . I will be dragging my partner along soon . Just yum !

Wasn't really well looked after by the staff. Told them i had a food allergy and they just smiled and gave my meal to my partner. No looking for alternatives for me. Rest of the degustation was quite nice though, apart from dessert which was too sweet and had an awful banana ice cream that was too overpowering. A pavlova for a dessert doesn't seem to fit the menu. We couldn't finish it. We also were given dirty plates and had to ask for clean ones. I wouldn't recommend and I won't be going back.

Went back after some years and we all really enjoyed it. Four of us had a really great night. Loved the new updated dining rooms and the food was superb. Service was friendly and professional but not over fussy like it can be. Had good laughs with the manager who has a sense of humour. Special mention for the Beef and the Tasmanian Pinot. We will be back for the afternoon Tea

Terrible food. I will prefer food court at the shopping center. duck is too salty and the skin is not crispy, the meat texture is so dry, the steak was extremely overcook...... Very disappointed....

Friends and i went here as had been wanting to try since it reopened. What a great night it was. The dining area's are private really well spaced out. Eating good food and drinking good Wine while listening to Classical music made for such a memorable experience. I had the Duck which was gorgeous and bursting with flavor and everyone loved theirs. Only 2 of us had dessert due to having Appetisers, Entree and a Main course. Would highly recommend. We also had two bottles of the house Red wine which was very good quality.

Under new ownership and much better food.

Came here for dinner Friday night and had the best time.

Food: truffle bread starter was so good. I skipped entrees as I wanted to have room for dinner and dessert. I had the Salmon- it was delicious and flaky. The paper it was wrapped in looked delicious so I’m glad they gave scissors with a warning that the paper wasn’t edible. I would have eaten it otherwise. Had sides of potato and truffle vegetables. Partner had steak- didn’t hear much out of him except mmmm so good, mmm so delicious- he’s pretty happy to make it our local again. My partner had the dessert- I had wine so I can’t really remember- it was pretty and I was told that if it’s available next time, we are getting it again.

Drinks: great wine list, filled with wine you can’t just get at a BWS or first choice, and really well priced.

Service: warm and knowledgeable. Malcolm the owner is hilarious, we had good banter through the night. I would come back just for the service.
Ambience: candlelit romantic, a fireplace that was decorated with fairy lights. Clean toilets, even at the end of the night. They even brought out a rose when they found out we were having a belated Valentine’s Day.

Would I go back? Yes, I can’t wait to go back. Thanks for such a great evening.

Had heard a lot about this restaurant, which has recently reopened under new management and after a significant refurbishment. The menu has changed from previous reviews, now international, offering beautifully prepared and presented options across 4 courses. With 3 dining we were able to try a good selection of the dishes and were not disappointed. I thought my salmon was a standout but we also loved the lamb and the rissoto. Great selection of wines and other drinks complemented the meal. Service was spot on and the setting was comfortable but classy. We will definitely dine here again and bring our friends. Best small restaurant in the area.

Has had a big refurbishment recently. We absolutely loved our night out. Been coming here for years and are so pleased 2 Small Rooms is back

This week I scored a nice deal at dimmi for a dinner at two small rooms.

My booking was for 7 o'clock but I ended up finishing what I had to do earlier and decided to go there and see if it would be possible to have a table earlier than expected, once we arrived we were warmly welcome as if we were friends that hadn't seen each other in a long time and with no problems we were accommodated to a nice table in the middle of the restaurant.

Once we got the menus, there were so many interesting options that I was lost between all of them but I ended up deciding on the French onion soup, duck confit and for dessert, lemon pavlova roulade.

My partner went for the toast with garlic and herbs butter, crunchy farro risotto, and for main there weren't originally any vegan or vegetarian options but when we asked about it we were told that they could arrange something for sure and that she was only gonna check with the kitchen and let us know, when she came back we were given two options of gnocchi and my partner gladly settled for the truffled butter gnnochi and for dessert she asked for the espresso and red beans creme brulee.

The French onion soup was a small serve, but the taste was all I was expecting, a nice caramelisation and sweetness from the onions with some complex notes coming from the broth, not salty, not spice, just the balance and soft flavour you would expect from an onion soup. Would rate it a 4 out of 5.

The toast with garlic and herbs butter was a huge serve, way bigger than we were expecting. The bread was crunchy outside, soft in the middle with a nice buttery flavour but I think the serve is too big and you kinda get tired of it after a while since there is no dipping sauce or spread served together as a runaway. We enjoyed it but a smaller serve would have been better. I would rate it also a 4 out of 5.

The crunchy farro risotto was the dish that made us realise what we signed in for. It was just amazing. Many different mushrooms coming together in A lovely crunchy but chewy risotto. With deep and complex flavour this dish (I unfortunately didn't order a dish for this course so I was barely watching my partner eating) almost made we fight each other since she liked it so much that she barely gave me any of it. This one deserves a 5 out of 5.

The duck confit also was all I could have expected from it, the meat was falling apart while being really juice with some nice flavours coming from the seasoning without losing the flavour of the duck, the sides that came on the dish also served to enhance the flavour of the duck and at the same time cutting through its strong flavour. This one I would also rate a 5 out of 5.

The truffled butter gnocchi, I still don't believe how it wasn't on the main menu, this was easily the best dish we were served tonight while the waitress made us have the impression that it would be just something put together by the kitchen staff as a vegetarian option. The gnocchi was so fluffy like little pillows of heaven and the truffled butter had that earthy flavour but also the sweetness and fatness coming from the butter, eating it I recollected my childhood when I would go to my grandma's house and when arriving she would hug me and I would feel like the most special child in the world. This one of course gets a 5 out of 5.

The lemon pavlova roulade was a nice zesty dessert that removed all the greasy that was left in my mouth from the duck and the butter with its nice lemon and passionfruit flavours. The pavlova was nice and smooth but I got a feeling that it wasn't necessarily fresh (I might be wrong though). The passionfruit sorbet was so creamy that I wouldn't know it was a sorbet if the menu didn't say so. I would rate it a 4 out of 5.

Finally, the creme brulee, it had a nice crunchy sugar top and a subtle red bean flavour which made it really enjoyable, the espresso ice cream was also creamy and had a strong coffee flavour to it which was a nice escape from the sweetness of the creme brulee. This one also deserves a 4 out of 5.

Overall I almost feel bad by getting a discount from dimmi as this place definitely deserves the price they charge for their dishes. I am really happy that I got this deal otherwise I might have never found this place since it's kinda in the middle of nowhere (at least not in a place that I usually go or pass by). Thank you Two Small Rooms for an excellent dinner experience.

Took my parents there. Food was great. French but with a modern twist. We all enjoyed ourselves.

Staff was helpful but there was a large group that as well and that slowed down the service.

Having a great reputation maybe I was expecting too much. Poor service, small servings of very ordinary, poorly prepared food. Could not cook a steak to order that came out rare instead of medium, served a barely cooked chicken thigh in place of the breast as described on the menu. Got sick of waiting to order desert and left to buy an ice cream at the nearby night owl instead. The 1.0 rating is only there because I don't think I can actually give zero.

Dimmi had 50%off food so my friends and I decided to give it a try.
It's a cute little restaurant and the customer service was excellent.
Unlike the typical French cuisine, the portion size is big.
However, the flavour does not taste like French at all. All of our meals were very salty and 2 out of the 3 pieces of beef were very dry.
I think 50% off is reasonable with the quality of food but I wouldn't pay the full price for these kind of 'French' dishes.

It's a nice cosy restaurant with a nice warm environment. Food was very tasty but too expensive. It's not worth the price. I didn't see anything special about it. I used a voucher for that. Might be different from when it's full price?

My family and I had lunch at this restaurant recently. Unfortunately was disappointed all the way around. We were kept waiting for our entree's (no bread rolls to tide you over), which when they turned up were minuscule. We had to order bread to try to pack it out. Two tiny crackers were served with the duck parfait, crackers which cost nothing, so really not sure if they'd run out or were just being stingy. The salmon lasagna was ok but the crepe Suzette, the pancakes were overcooked (hard) and the sauce was way too sweet and couldn't taste the Grand Marnier that was supposed to be in it. The sauce should have been citrusy and slightly tart, not overly sweet with no tang. The service was not good, at one point I had to pass the wine over to my mother as the waitress put both glasses in front of me and didn't go around the table to serve her!! We were given the wine menus at first only by another waiter and had to ask for the food menus (who orders wine without knowing what they're going to eat!)

The restaurant itself looks in need of a good revamp. The paint on the ceiling where lights originally were (I can only assume) had one coat of paint on but two coats elsewhere and looked really tacky for an expensive restaurant, the wall paintings looked like something out of the 70's. All up perhaps it's better to go here at night as lamp light might improve the look of the place. We all said we wouldn't go back which is a shame as there doesn't seem to be that many good restaurants in the western suburbs. Needs improvement.

never heard about French and Korean food before. I think everyone definitely go this place to try them cause I was surprise at good balance of meal. I read crab tortellini is good here, and it does. We had lamb sandwich, beetroot cured salmon, angus sirloin steak. can't find any faulty. crepe suzette and cream brulee also very unique and delicious. only problem was too busy on Saturday but I will be back soon.

Why would you have waiters working who barely speak English? Don't ask the guy anything about the food, that's my advice. Food is amateur, French cuisine, but my salmon was sooooo overcooked.
Samantha
Extremely disappointed with the degustation menu, we wanted to trial it as there was a special on and thought this would be a great way to try out a new place but the courses were barely edible apart from the dessert. There was no explanation about the food, the service was less than average and the quality of the meals was less than acceptable! It was almost like they used less than quality produce and cheap cuts because they had a special on. It was a complete waste on our time and very deceptive! I would not recommend this place to anyone out of principal and never go back there again!

Simple yet elegant furnishings promise a classic French experience. The menu has options from terrine, escargot, duck, confit of salmon and pork belly to consider. Opting for the ravioli and slow cooked Emu Bourgignon., we found the Emu delicious benefiting from the long cooking in red wine, lentils and, tomato with sumac, mint and yogurt. The ravioli was fresh and flavorful. A range of wines (including French) are available by the glass and a large choice by the bottle from $45 upwards. If you BYO it should be special as it will cost you $15 for each. A brownie, rich and nicely presented, to finish. Worth a visit for that special occasion for fine French food.

Two Small Rooms is a wonderful little gem of a restaurant, located around the corner from the Toowong Private Hospital. I have dined here twice, once with a group of hospital executives in the tiny private back room, and once in the main dining room. The portions are not large, but the food is presented beautifully and has very good flavor. Wouldn't hesitate to return for a third time.

Really nice atmosphere and impeccable service last night when we visited for the first time. Every dish was cooked perfectly but the standouts were definitely the escargots, the scallop ceviche and the crab tortellini. The pasta that wrapped around the tender crab meat was thin and cooked nicely. The sauce that accompanied was creamy and definitely my favourite of the night. The emu I ordered for main was a bit tough to my liking but tasty nonetheless. Would return to try more of the menu.

We were shocked by the way we were handled on our first visit to this restaurant. We enjoy going out for dinner regularly and do not limit our cuisine selections. We did, on this night have a Cudo voucher. Upon arriving at 6.40pm we found ourselves being the only ones in the restaurant. When we presented the voucher the staff member told us that we had not done the correct thing and advised them we were on a deal. We were quite clear and polite about advising them that we had when we booked. The host just flatly told us that we hadn't advised him.
Being polite in nature, we asked him to consider the situation and see what he could do. He was so arrogant. The best bit is after giving us another serve, he said to us:" you can see we are a full house!".. There wasn't a soul in the place .. It was quite bizarre...
We decided to enjoy another excellent restaurant to which I believe for four of us the bill hit over 500 dollars. It wasn't the money, it was just the common decency that was amiss. Even if we had not followed the procedure, which we did, you just don't do what was done that night. He was horrible. It's a long standing restaurant and I'm sure will be there for ages however, I'm old school. Thoroughly enjoyed spending oodles elsewhere. I would suggest you do the same...

The food came out quickly given that there was only one other open table. I thought my blue swimmer crab tortellini with crustaceans cream sauce, preserved lemon, broad bean, cayenne was beautifully presented like a dainty piece of artwork in a bowl. The crustacean sauce reminded me a lot of the famous il centro sand crab lasagne, it was creamy and flavoursome. I loved the slices of pickled radish which gave my palate a refreshing and clean touch. In comparison, the other travel bunnie’s free range confit duck leg with creamed potato mash, bok choy, shallot and Chinese master sauce was hearty and more wholesome. The duck leg meat easily fell off the bone and was tender and juicy. We couldn’t fault either of the dishes and our plates were completely empty when they were being collected. We were both excited about our desserts. The espresso & red bean creme brulee was pretty good but unfortunately the chocolate brownie with dark chocolate mousse, macaroon, strawberry, vanilla ice cream was average and had a number of elements missing.

On a Saturday night for a dinner for two we were a bit disappointed. The food was fine and better than that even. The wine list was good. The service was reasonable. But the decor is so boring and drab it just brings the whole experience down. Brown walls, boring pictures randomly hung, ugly fitted furniture, nothing special on the tables (no cloths, ordinary cutlery) and no double glazing or curtains (lush velvet ones perhaps) or plants in old french pots (maybe?) or anything that absorbs the traffic noise on Milton road. A good restaurant is more than the food, and this one needs some help to amplify the good food.

Had a lovely dinner here with some friends the other night. Couldn't fault the food or the service. Duck leg was the best I've had.

Not sure if the owners have changed but the food did not at all look like what it did in the other pictures on this page. No wine was ordered however glasses were not removed until dessert. The taste was pleasant but not for its price. Would only go back if there was a buy one get one free offer.

Heard a lot about this restaurant and went with the 6 course degustation voucher of $99 for 2. Didn't disappoint at all. The degustation is a good way to sample their specialities. Fine dining standard, food beautifully presented, warm and welcoming service. Great with voucher deal but might be a bit expensive with their standard price.

Went here for a family birthday on the weekend for the first time in 15years. The last time I visited I went with school as part of a hospitality excursion. It was to show us what a fine dining experience should be like. Back then it was wonderful...now...average. According to other reviews it has recently changed hands. The service was good - but not fine dining. No napkin places on your lap, I had to wave down the waiter to order a drink and the alternate drop meals didn't arrive at the same time leaving half of our party staring at the others eating. The food was also okay but nothing special and I'm not sure it could be classified as French anymore as Zomato suggests. An Asian influence made it into dishes such as fried kimchi with the steak. The flavors didn't quite match. While we still had a lovely lunch and the atmosphere was perfect I'm not sure I would return for the food.

First time back under the new owners. Very impressive food. Three of us had 12 different dishes all cooked beautifully, and all of us are fussy judges. One problem was smoke getting into the eating area from the kitchen. The waitress was new but very helpful and not over attentive and most importantly if she didn't know the answer she went off to get the answer rather than making it up.

Recommended.

Was there to have 6 course degustation. This restaurant was my dream restaurant when I was studying in university. It seems that there must be a lot changes with the new management. I found the dishes are acceptable with the price of voucher deal but not as what they showed as the original value. Can see the efforts from the chef, however, service is a little bit let down. Overall experience is not bad but will be under if I compare this restaurant with "Deer Duck Bistro" locating further down along Milton Road.

Romantic. Went for a romantic dinner and the whole evening was absolutely perfect. A beautiful crab totellini which I am always having here wiith a good quality of wine. Had 3 courses. Each dish looked like a piece of art and delicious. Well priced for what u get at a 5 star restaurant

We should have stayed home............. I should have been more timely in posting my review - it's 5 weeks since we went to dinner at this restaurant but I think that there's probably not been much change.............. honestly this is probably the worst restaurant experience we have ever had ........ we had a 5 course degustation menu and the food was very, very ordinary. Some elements seemed to be straight out of a bottle/packet, the portions were incredibly small (the snail course consisted of 1 snail - I'm not joking, and it wasn't even a nice snail, 2 other courses were small appetizer portions at best, the main was an entree and I was waiting for my husbands cheese plate to arrive until I reaissed that the tiny serve in front of me was for both of us!!).

Service on the night was so bad that it was funny - main course served to our table and as we looked down at our plates another staff member swooped in and grabbed the plates and took them away (we assume that they weren't our meals???); after the people at the table next to us left the clean up began including generous use of spray and wipe - leaving me lightly misted and very clean down one side..... it was obvious that most of the wait staff were very inexperienced and had received little training, however 2 of the staff were very pleasant and were obviously trying very hard ........so they were the highlight of the night. The gents toilet was in darkness as the light had exploded at some point (charring on the ceiling told the story)........

Seriously - in terms of the food we definitely should have stayed home - but we did get a laugh or two along the way.

The best experience. I dined last Saturday with my family for mom's birthday. It was fabulous. We had 4 courses which are pork shoulder croquettes, snail, duck breast, pork belly. I think crab totellini and pork belly are the best I've ever eaten. Amazing. I recommend here. Dessert was also just wow. Tasty and friendly staff there. Will back soon.

Change of Ownership Ruined The Quality. Two Small Rooms seems to have undergone some changes and it's for the worse. This place use to be great and served tasty fine dining food. When we went two weeks ago the food was less than average for the price. It was definitely not fine dining, the portions were small and the flavours were not tasty. Won't be going back again.

We didn't order any wines and they didn't take away our wine cups until the third course. We didn't even move them so it was obvious that they were getting in the way.

They need to work more on customer service and the chef needs to do more test tasting in the kitchen.

Very Disappointed. Went for dinner on valentines day for the fourth year in a row. Wow this place has really gone down hill.
The service was very poor, with no attention to detail and meal was way over priced for what we got. It used to be a great restaurant but sadly it is now terrible. There was crab shell in the tortellini. The bouillabaisse was terrible, the broth was not as it should be, the prawns were over cooked, the fish tasteless the mussels small and one my wife's plate had not opened. The scallops were miniscule and I think frozen. Had to ask twice for a wine list, and the staff did not know how to serve people. We will not be back.
Greg J Kentish
Wow so disappointing, I've been coming here for over 20 years and came for Valentine's Day and was terribly disappointed. They had a set menu for $129 each, we waited for 35 mins before we saw any food, then we got second course before the first , the first course when it came was cold, the main course was cold too and fairly flavourless, the dessert was good- you can charge for amazing food and experience ( and they do here) but if you can't get either right then don't bother - will not ever come here again , there are plenty of top notch restaurants in Brisbane, just not this one

So sad.. It's down down hill. My wife and I have going to two small rooms for five year for special dinners(and loved it). Last night we with two friends spent $480.00 and felt rushed to order, food was ok but sizes of meal so small after three courses we were still hungry. The $38 main course was three pieces of duck-1cmx2cm, 1cmx3cm and 1cmx1cm with teaspoon of red cabbage. Overall - The service was terrible and the food was only just "nice". So sad, we won't be going back.
Goodfairefood
Good faire food. We were the only patrons in the restaurant . Service was slow . In fact the restaurant was late opening for lunch and the menu displayed outside did not match that offered. Food was just OK. Well done was burned. We were fortunate to have ordered chips as the portion was sufficient to make up for a small main course. If the other reviews here are accurate , then there must be an enormous discrepancy between lunch and dinner and skills of the respective chefs. Finally, the glass paned internal doors as well as the front entrance are quite dirty. On a positive note the waitress was friendly.

Will be back!. After years of having this on my list finally got to be able to make sure that I got to try Two Small Rooms. Absolutely enjoyed the food and service. Compliments to James on professionalism, wine knowledge and recommendations. Compliments to Chef on meals. Atmosphere unobtrusive and relaxed. Recommended most definitely.

Diana. Art on a plate, each dish is intricate in it's design & the flavors blend in harmony. The service is professional, polite & unobtrusive. All our food was perfectly cooked & any whim we had was swiftly attended to. We like our fish cooked well & this was quickly fixed when we were told it was slightly under to preserve the moisture. This small eatery has a simple no frills interior, clean lines with a homely feel to it

RnD. Went to Two Small Room for lunch on Friday, yes it was on a deal voucher luck for that because I would hate to pay full price for poor front of house service (nobody to greet us we had to find the guy our self who was hiding out the back). We were then to find your own table not that was difficult as the room only had about 10 tables. So we settle in expecting good food as you would , well we were give a very small menu that looked like it had not thought or inspiration. We choose our meal and request to have our glass of wine which was included in the deal. Well guess what no Red wine your choice was white or white – so what was the offer for substitution – NOTHING yep your read correct NOTHING, you could by a different drink but nothing in place of the missing part of the deal. House red how hard it is it to open a bottle of your next cheapest until you can get you first cheapest wine.
Well the meal was nothing to write home about entrée was bland main was something that a first year high school would cook and we didn’t dare with desert. Paid for the extra beer my husband purchased and fled out the door never to return. Somewhere special I say not .... 3/10

I went to this restaurant earlier in the year for a birthday party, it was very disappointing / service was very slow and the food came out cold which didn't even taste nice then I got hit with a massive bill at the end of the night for mediocre food and service. Won't be back again, too expensive and restaurant need to lift their game!

Overrated. Tried this place 3 times because so many people raved about it and I wanted to see such excellence for myself. But it fell a long way short of even average every time and will not go back. Food is quite ordinary despite people suggesting it is French-inspired. I can't see it, myself, but maybe I haven't been to the part of France that has inspired this cuisine. Having said that, the food isn't bad, just nothing special. The atmosphere is a bit odd where you can hear other peoples conversations too clearly and silences feel awkward - and I felt like I was sitting too close to other people I didn't know. The wait staff seemed like they were not happy to be working there and were not that bothered about us. Parking isn't great and its on a really busy road. Seems plenty of people like it though as they keep going, so they are doing something some people like - it just didn't happen when I was there.

Had a wonderful dinner here with my husband. We were greeted by James who let us choose our seats and then explained the menu. We tried the wagyu pastry and brie cheesboard for entrée. Mains were the eye fittet and fish of the day with shoe string fries. The chef also sent out a complimentary side of chunky smoked bacon with a tomato sauce. AMAZING! Dessert was the creme brulee and the frangipane tart. Cant recommend it highly enough. We will be back later in the year for my husbands birthday :)

Gorgeous meal. Dined here two weeks ago for my birthday. The food was sublime. For mains, we had the eye fillet which melted in our mouths. The combination of the buttermilk sauce with the potato gratin and silky meat was truly memorable. We ordered sides of fries (tasty seasoning), the cauliflower with blue cheese (to die for - even if you don't normally go for cauliflower), and a green salad (simple and fresh). The desserts were amazing. I was thinking about mine for days. I had the chocolate marquise with creme fraiche ice cream and poached peaches. The chocolate marquise had the most beautiful texture and wasn't too sweet with the tang of the creme fraiche icecream complementing it perfectly. My husband had the frangipane tart with condensed milk icecream and caramelised apple. Need I say more? The service was a little gauche but generally efficient. I would dine there again in a heartbeat.

Great restaurant with very attentive staff.

Small is Beautiful - 2 minute review. I was looking for somewhere to go to celebrate and catch up with an ex work colleague and freshly married couple (Sean & Sally) and to treat my missus (Nicola – we are not so freshly married!) a place that was perhaps not one of the usual suspects, quiet and relaxed.

For personal reasons I always prefer to hand over my hard earned cash to folks that are more akin to a small “family” concern rather than a medium to large sized business that perhaps don’t need my business so much and maybe feel they don’t have to try as hard. Anyhow, thanks to Mr Google I came across 2 Small Rooms, conveniently located in the western suburbs, easy to find and get to with local free parking on the side streets. Pictures and reviews looked inviting; it ticked all the boxes so we booked.

Inside very nicely done out, smart and contemporary with just enough of a hint of the classic features to remind you this is a fairly old building. Greeted and looked after all evening by a very friendly, attentive and poshly spoken James and his partner in crime Jasper; great timing with his service all evening and excellent menu knowledge and description of what we ordered and he presented us to eat – not that understood 90% of it as I’m no Masterchef. A good selection of entrees and mains, a few items on the menu were not available but they had been replaced by others, it didn’t matter we all chose want we fancied.

Entrees arrived promptly, can only speak for my slow cooked pork belly with lots of fancy stuff attached ... Mmmmm simply delightful, fingers crossed a taste of things to come. A relative short interlude and the mains arrived. Three out of the four of us went for the Eye fillet of Beef and marrow bone the fourth the pan fried onion gnocchi, roasted tomato, basil oil, tomato emulsion, buffalo mozzarella, gremolata, wilted spinach .....and a heap of other colourful looking stuff (again sorry, I’m no master chef!).

Now when it comes to a piece of meat an eye fillet I have to say is not my usual choice as for me it never looks like you are getting much. However, from now on I will have to remind myself sometimes it all about the quality and not the quantity. Again simply delightful, very well presented and for me cooked to perfection, a quality piece of beef, well complimented by some fancy potato stuff (truffle potato gratin – I have been reliably informed) and some tasty pumpkin coloured butter that thankfully for me did not contain pumpkin. Suffice to say we all polished our plates. To close the night we shared a couple of chocolate and caramel tarts, tea and coffee, just enough to fill any remaining gaps and send us home content without feeling we had been greedy.

We were last guests out (a bit like my old pub drinking days!) but by no means rushed to leave. In fact we closed the night with a look round the place (it’s a bit “Tardis” like and certainly a lot more than just the 2 small rooms suggested). We also had a friendly chat with James, who after what appeared to be a busy night was now relaxed and had lost some of his “poshness” but was still as polite and friendly as he (and others) had been all night. Turns out that James and the and 2SR team ( all the J’s , Jasper, Josh and Jade) had only been running the place for the last 5 weeks, having taken over from previous management. For me they have certainly started on the right foot, quality food and excellent service – please keep it up. I wish you all the best in business you deserve to do well and be a great success ......... but don’t lose the character of the place, the quality of food and service and become too big and unfriendly - small is beautiful and otherwise I may not be able to return !

Divine Dining. 2 Small rooms is re-opened and rejuvenated. What an absolute delight: The staff is attentive and charming, the ambience was perfect and the food is absolutely heavenly. The price of the food is so reasonable you will be blown away by the quality.
Will forever be a repeat customer!

What a delightful little gem! Every mouthful was sensational and I didn't want my plate to empty. The food, service and ambience was all so complimentary. Will I be back? Absolutely!

Good food. ok service. was still a nice evening with friends.

-----07 Jul, 2013-----

Great food nice place to be, give it a try :-)

Atmosphere is a little ordinary but the food was exceptional. Also large range of wine and food with a very high standard of service. I can not fault any of their dishes in have tried. Can't wait to visit again to try more.

Tired and dated. I suspect this was a nice posh restaurant in the 80's but it's pretty tired now - dusty blinds, radio playing in the dining rooms and somewhat scruffy waitstaff. The food was fine, not great. There are plenty of other places around that are much nicer if you're looking for a fancy meal.

Keeping it simple by saying food is fantastic, customer service not so much...

Wonderful service, excellent meals. I have nothing to complain about. Wonderful!

Food was fantastic but terrible service. We ordered the degustation and like other restaurants that offer degustation, the waitstaff generally explain what the fancy names and elements are of each dish as they place it down in front of you. Not at this place. We were left guessing what each dish was! Full credit to the chefs but waitstaff need some serious training!

Great dining experience for even vegetarian. Just wanted to say thank you to this restaurant. We had a voucher for a 7 course meal which was a set menu. As my partner is a vegetarian I asked if they could arrange a special menu for her. They kindly accepted my request and prepared a beautiful meal for her. We had a great dining experience and could not ask more. I highly recommend this restaurant.

While the food at two small rooms has always been second to none, I grow increasingly tired of the abrupt, disinterested manner of the wait staff. Shame, as it offers a fine dining experience and atmosphere unrivalled in the local area. Improve the service, but don't change the food!!

Great food and great price. Well prepared food, about 20% overpriced, especially entrees. Cocktails $20 each - most places the going price is $15-16 per cocktail. This restaurant is one of Brisbane's best, however as with most restaurants in Brisbane it's overpriced compared to Melbourne or Sydney establishments. Also BYO is discouraged - $20 corkage per person.

Good Experience. Used a cudo voucher for a 3 course meal and signed book and the meal was lovely. My husband and I could not fault any of the food and the service was decent , not overly attentive but it was not pretentious and we were not ignored.
Will certainly go again.

Down Hill Big Time. As a resident of the suburb that Two Small Rooms is located, I consider this place as my 'local', having dined there since the '80s, on numerous (regular) occasions, and having had a few bad experiences recently, I planned to continue to give the place a 'go'...but no ...The grumpy 'head of shop', and the apathetic (and apparently under trained and dis-interested) staff let this place down immensely. The food is normally OK, but it too is not necessarily 'as ordered' and has come out in dribs and drabs. (ie not all main meals together). Having to ask for cutlery following courses is poor. Getting meals on dirty and chipped plates equally poor, but staff that don't appear to care (about customers who pay $2-300) let this place down. I understand that the owner is one of the grumpy 'front' of shop people, so that says a lot....unfortunately 'regular' clientele will eventually leave; and that (unfortunately) is what I have decided.

Nice. Didn't know what expect at first. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere is very intimate. Great place for a first date! Food was good but could be a little more adventurous.

One of my favourites.... I have always found the food to be absolutely delicious and of a very high standard. Even Rick Stein mentions this restaurant in one of his cookbooks. I was recently there for a family celebration and had a delicious prawn dish for entree, followed by a lamb dish for my main meal. I didn't have dessert but have uploaded a picture of my husband's dessert. A terrific place to eat, with a lovely ambience and the parking down the side street is a bonus too. I am looking forward to going back soon.
Food: 8 / 10
Service: 8 / 10
Ambience: 7.5 / 10

Disappointed Diners. I had been promising to take my husband to 2 Small Rooms following the wonderful dining experience I shared, at this restaurant, with my sister last year. Unfortunately, we were both disappointed with our visit this evening. The food was fantastic (full credit to the kitchen) however the service was terrible, apart from the young brunette waitress who was friendly and eager to please. The maitre d' was inattentive, abrupt and quite rude at times and the other staff did their very best to avoid eye contact. It's such a shame that the service doesn't match the food. We won't be rushing back.

When you're fighting for a top spot, think about the service. Dear Mr Two Small Rooms

I have been to your restaurant on a number of occasions in the past 2 years and the food has always been pretty good howeve,r for those prices, i want just that little bit more.

I don't want my wine to be snatched from me the moment i walk in the door, then sneered at for my, apparent, poor taste - if you don't want people to BYO then just take away this option.

I want the staff to be attentive, to advise me of your specials the moment the menus are handed to me. I don't want to wait 20 mins to place my order and then another 30 mins for my starters, and over 100 mins for my mains - a break is good but this is ridiculous, if your kitchen can't cope then stagger your bookings or get more staff.

I am pleased to see that you dropped that ridiculous cover charge for a bread roll - if you want to be French, then act like it, bury the cost in your menu prices and be generous with the bread, merci.

I want my wine poured as efficiently as my water and my non- drinking guests to, at least, be offered a drink from your, quite frankly, pathetic list of non alcoholic beverages. Most other fine dining restaurants can knock together a mocktail, why is it so how hard for you? Even just some bottles of something Italian or French (Orangina, peut-être?) would suffice, it's not as if these drinks go off quickly.

Don't get me wrong, your food is great, (although, a croquet of oxtail does not go with crispy baramundi) your sides are generous and your desserts are to die for but you're alongside some great company in Brisbane and, due to the above, i shall be busy trying those out rather than being so impressed with the dining my dining experience chez vous that i wouldn 't go elsewhere.

Perhaps, one day, we shall meet again but only if i start to hear great things, so, until then ...

Adieu.

Starsandwine

I liked your old stuff better than your new stuff..... Two Small Rooms used to be a favourite of ours, however our last few visits have been disappointing. Both food and service used to be consistently impressive. On our last visit, we had three different wait staff during the evening and on a number of occasions, we had to wave them down for attention - they seemed very keen on getting us in and out as quickly as possible. We had to pour our own wine a few times too (at $20 BYO per bottle!). Overall, the food is still quite tasty, however the service has definitely deteriorated - there are too many good restaurants in Brisbane to compete with for this to remain in my top 5.

Happy Birthday. I felt the dining experienced was definitely dappened for our family with the $20 per bottle corkage charged by this restaurant. When the bill arrived our group of 6 people were charged $80 as we had 4 bottles of wine.

Between the cakage and corkage it was $110.00 for what!If they dont wish to have BYO dont advertise this as a BYO restaurant. You dont mind paying a reasonable amount but I felt this was excessive.

One of my old favourite's that I visited recently for the first time in a while. Still the same great quality food - perfect amount of attention. I had the "Milly Hill Lamb Rump, Preserved Lemon Buckwheat, Persian Fetta, Snow Pea Tendril and Lamb Jus" and it was beautiful - the lemon buckwheat was surprisingly fantastic. One bad thing was they had no scallops on the menu! I had had some every time I had been there previously and missed them.

Beautiful dinner. Being at Two Small Rooms for the first time, we didn't know exactly what to expect. The location is very nice, decent and elegant. The service was excellent, very friendly and forlooking.
The dinner was excellent (fish of the day) with a good taste and nice setting.
A place worth coming back again.

Cudo experience.. Used our Cudo voucher last Friday night. We were treated very well. We eat out at up-market places a bit (when the purse permits) and can honestly say that the food was terrific and we did not come off second best on a set menu (entree choice of smoked salmon and soup, main was beef or chicken, and sweets was a to-die-for macadamia brownie or navel tart). Staff and owners were obliging and we weren't treated any differently to the regulars. The cook book was a definite bonus. With a long positive record to protect, Two Small Rooms didn't disappoint. This was our experience and we will do a return visit.

Not Good. Food was reasonable. Bit dissappointing when you purchase CUDO voucher with not much selection. The CUDO voucher was $80 and the menu we were offered was normally $110.00 for two people. To be honest I would be a bit dissappointed to pay that amount for the small amount of food. This was sort of ok until we received the bill for the corkage $20 per person. Not sure what everyone else thinks but if BYO wine is offered I assume its ok to bring wine. $20 per person what for - 2 clean glasses????

Lovely lunch. We went to Two Small Rooms for lunch today to recover from a really bad lunch at Jaz restaurant Toowong a few days ago. What a contrast - and for only $5 pp extra for a two course lunch. Whereas Jaz clearly had no chef in the kitchen, everything in Two Small Rooms felt like it was prepared by an expert chef. Beautiful fresh salads and expertly balanced dressings. Freshly made sauces. Great ingredients. Impeccable service. One small criticism only was that the mushroom risotto, whilst it was beautifully flavoured, was a bit salty for us. But since we shared, this didn't matter too much. Will definitely go back.

Not sure reading the reviews now as our experience tonight was so different. Nothing was exquisite in fact the steak was so tough and sinuey that half was left on the side. I wish the service was warm and friendly as it would've been easier to overlook the average-ness of our food bit it wasn't. I don't think I've had such unfriendly and disengaged waiters who left an a feeling of being quite unwelcome. One of these men was an owner as it turned out. Positives were the pork belly entree and the consistently reliable filling of water glasses.

I find it a pleasure to find a maitre'd prepared to discuss a menu, the varietal differences in both food products and wine regions. My meal of oysters, duck, cheese platter and affogato was a splendid experience. My birthday lunch guest (mother) and I elected to sit in the bay window to keep an eye out for vehicular intruders. Excellent French champagne by the glass was a treat and the meal cooked to perfection. I shall be returning as there is far more to explore in the wine menu.

Reliable and excellent. Two Small Rooms is my favourite place for excellent traditional french-inspired food. They serve a simple menu of complex food that most foodies would not be capable of producing in the comfort of their own Larousse Gastronomique-equipped home. The wines are reasonably priced and of very fine selection. It's the closest thing you'll find to a french provincial restaurant in Brisbane.

Just Delicious. Whilst the meal price is above average, it is worth paying for when the food is amazing. I always recommend Two Small Rooms to others. I would recommend dinner over lunch but the experience has always been a positive one.

Just brilliant. The Cavier was to die for and the lamb was tender and juicy. The trifle was a bit runny but hey, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

The second time I have eaten at this delightful neighbourhood eatery. Having just celebrated it's 20th year in operation, it is both refreshing to see an establishment not following the oft trod path of reinventing itself or following the lure of the big city bright lights. The food was exquisite, cooked to perfection. The wine list representing both domestic wines and a well selected international range. My particular choice, the rare as hen's teeth Rockford Black Shiraz.

Lovely intimate dining. Visited Two Small Rooms just before Christmas (no doubt one of their busiest times) the atmosphere is elegant and quiet. I've dined here several times and the food is always superb with a frequently changing menu that encourages diners to try something unusual. I note the prices are dearer than UrbanSpoon has them listed (more like mains in the $30-40 range) but it's well worth it.

The large bowl of earthy brown mushroom soup had a couple of grilled fennel sausage bits floating on the surface. The very strong mushroom flavour was simply delightful and while the texture was a little grainy for my liking, it in no way impacted the flavour of the soup.

I was recently fortunate enough to head to a little gem of a restaurant in Brisbane called Two Small Rooms . We were there for a family celebration and I was so excited, as this has always been one of my favourite places to eat in the city. The things I love most about this restaurant are that it is located in a quiet suburban area, the restaurant itself has a great feel and energy about it and finally, it has maintained a very high standard for over twenty years. It is so good in fact, that even Rick Stein mentions it in his cookbook - Coast to Coast . I was lucky to have my 21st birthday party at this venue and my father celebrated his 60th at the restaurant as well. If you find yourself in search of a fabulous place to eat in Brisbane, then I highly recommend Two Small Rooms. My entrée - This prawn dish was delicious. For a main, I ordered this lamb salad - scrumptious. Mr B ordered this beef dish, which he said was phenomenal - a seriously big call from him I must say. Everyone th

Smoked Salmon, Avocado Salsa and Poached Egg...Peeps, this is delicious! The salmon was smoked really well. It smelled wonderful and the combo of the three was so good. Yum.

Overall well cooked food but while with no surprises, I got a very safe, simple and slightly boring Markets Menu. Service though was spot on, warm and friendly and there was no delays in between meals.

Two Small Rooms describes itself as 'boutique fine dining'. If you have no idea what that means, just walk in and it'll click. As soon as I stepped inside, it was like walking into someone's house. The dining area is literally - two small, side-by-side ro
