Review Malt Pier - Brisbane

Peter Schravemade
Located on ground level Wharf Park, in a relatively new office precinct, is a small modern Australian restaurant/cafe. Offset by the Brisbane River, this place was the perfect choice for our business lunch. The service was excellent, with both of our waiters friendly, polite and professional. The menu is excellent. Small (probably because it’s lunch), but versatile enough to satisfy all. I would have loved some starter/entree selections on the menu, but the staff assisted by converting one of the existing dishes. Lunch dishes were between $18 & $30. The food was bang on! Great range of flavours and tastes. The drinks menu was also well rounded and, everyone got what they were looking for. The only downer was the difficulty in finding a park, but I would imagine this will become easier as the building nearby are brought to completion. I’d highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a quiet spot for lunch that is close by the city and valley, but not right in there.

Friendly staff. Dogs are allowed if you are seated at the outside tables. It gets cold there but thankfully they have blankets. Be sure to dress warm especially if there is a breeze. Coffee is excellent. The potato waffle eggs Benedict was delicious. I'd definitely go back.

Food was amazing. We had the steak sandwich and calamari. Smoothies were great too. All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Great location. We highly recommend and will definitely be returning. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Not to took my horn but I’m a bit of a salmon Benedict expert. Firstly, adding avo cost 6 dollars. The most I’ve seen at other places is 4-5 bucks. So on principle I didn’t add any. The salmon is cured in house I believe, rather thick cuts with more of a rubber texture that I didn’t like. Egg yolk for one of my eggs was fully cooked. That kind of ruined the Benny experience. Instead of muffin or sourdough bread they used a potato waffle. This shows a lack of understanding of the Benny experience. Bread is porous and absorbs the egg yolk and hollandaise sauce. The bread can be used to mop up the plate at the end of the meal and arguably provides the most flavoursome morsels. The potato waffle on the other hand lacks this quality. Fried potato also makes the meal heavier than it needs to be. Portion size was slightly smaller than average. There’s really no excuse for overcooked egg, any chef should be able to nail this 100% of the time. I won’t bring friends here again. The avo on toast was good, not stingy with the cheese. Staff polite. Nice area to walk around after food. Not coming back.

We walk past this place often and always see a flow people of going in and out, but having tried the food ourselves it was far from disappointing. FOOD: My husband ordered the big gnocchi breakfast. The presentation was great, taste was on point but the gnocchi was not cooked well as it stuck to your teeth and the dish was too heavy as it was drenched in all sorts of oil (Chorizo oil and some green herb oil) The dish would have been better if it came with a slice of toast to absorb the sauce and make it less heavy or a wedge of lemon to neutralize it a little. The crossiant was stale - it tastes like it has been sitting in the cabinet for days. For a cafe of this calibra and in the newstead area you would have expected them to toasted it before serving The highlight was deff the coffee and the smoothie we ordered. SERVICE We didn't understand why we were questioned twice to scan and and show we are dbl Vax. The weird Q was if we had made a reservation when the waitor at the front had already asked us to scan in take a seat and help ourselves. The approach did not make us feel welcome at all. When other customers walking in were not questioned. It's evident that the staff here lacks communication or trust in each other to fulfill their tasks as front house staff. For the price you pay I'd say best take it to gas works cafe/restaurants - better service and high quality fresh food!

The view and the atmosphere just as good as the food. You can see how much love the chef put on the dishes as they decorate your breakfast.

Recently moved into Newstead and regularly pass by usually calling for a takeaway coffee. This week we’d booked a table for brunch as we had our 2 year old granddaughter staying for the weekend. So 2 1/2 plus our small terrier. The staff were fantastic looking after us in the busy restaurant, nothing too much trouble. We had a selection of juice, coffee, tea, meals, extra plate, etc etc. The food was really very tasty, staff helpful after I’d messed up the order. Great location by the river, nice and quiet.

Cute cafe near the waters edge serving all day breakfasts, lunch and licensed. We stopped here to grab a lunch while the sun was still out. Enjoyed a beer and wine with our grilled barramundi and southern fried chicken burger. Both were good portions, good perfectly and tasty. The fish was well seasoned and the chicken was juicy and tender. It get busy for breakfast but worth coming back to check the rest of the menu out. Puppy friendly.

I came here for a Saturday breakfast and ordered the “pier eggs with bacon, pork sausage, mushroom, pepperonata, roasted tomato and sourdough” for $25. The portion size was very good and the food was very vibrant with a lot of different colours and a variety of flavours. The only thing I did not like was that the sourdough bread was placed underneath everything so it became very soggy and tasted sour from the oil of the peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes so I would have preferred it to be put separately on the side. The atmosphere was very beautiful with a lovely view of the river. I was provided tap water and there wasn’t a lot of people yet the waitress was not paying attention and did not top off my water or gave a jug of water on the table for us to help ourselves. Otherwise, it was overall a good experience with the food and environment of this restaurant.

Great little find! We've been living locally for almost 3 years and this is the first time we tried Malt Pier. Very happy with the attentive and professional service with smiles. We ordered Malt Pier Monster for sharing and it came in 2 separate plates! We appreciated the effort and thoughtfulness of the staff. They kept refilling water too. Nothing was too much for them.
Amazing view to the river is a bonus!

Wonderful food and service! The smoked salmon was some of the finest quality I have had in Brisbane. The coffee was delicious and it was all served with a smile!

Lovely secluded spot on the river with impeccable service provided by our little Colombian dynamos.
Had the meatballs for entree and have to say they were the best meatballs I have ever tasted
Had the duck for main also very nicely cooked though would have liked the skin a bit crispier and the fat rendered more
The Barman made me my fav espresso martini and did a fantastic job even though not listed in the cocktail list
Will def be back ( would love to try breakfast)

Great food and service - went with the elderly parents and there was something for everyone. Small but open and fresh. Beautiful indoor/outdoor dining is especially enjoyable on a lovely day. Close to the river and in a great precinct.

Very disappointing from the start to the finish! They lost our booking, food was bland, fruit juices were mainly all pulp, kids smoothies tasted like the milk was off, very small portions, very sad place for such a great location, definitely will not recommend this venue to any friends, with so many restaurants in the area they really need to pick up their act

We came here for breakfast with friends who had a baby. We booked a table for 4 people and a baby and asked for a higgchair. When we arrived, we were placed right at the back of the cafe in a corner. It was tricky getting to the table with the pram as the passageways were quite narrow. Luckily there was a space to put the pram at the side of the table. We were asked for drinks straight up. Once they arrived, it took at least half an hour before our breakfast order was taken. It was busy but the wait was too long. We then asked for a highchair for the baby to sit in. We waited another half hr before our food arrived and when we reminded them about the highchair, we were told because we had a pram, they couldn't allow a highchair next to table as well. There was room for one as we were in a corner so I don't really know why we were refused one. Food was ok, drinks ok - nothing special about this place at all. Then when were about to leave, we couldn't get the pram out due to the cafe being full and very narrow passageways. We had to lift pram up over side ledge. Overall disappointed in the experience and slow service, sorry we won't be returning.

Simply wonderful!! I'm not sure why this restaurant has only got 3.4 out of 5 as the average rating, from my perspective it was 5 stars for food, 5 stars for excellent service, 5 stars for value for money and 5 stars for the ambiance. Friends and I met for a Sunday lunch there last weekend and we all raved about it. The food was outstanding and large in portion size which all of us enjoyed and the service from our Japanese (I think, please forgive me if wrong) gentleman waiter was right on point (thank you!). This is a place I will continue to recommend and will definitely be going back...and back...and back to :-) Please stay the same!!!

I had high expectations. Located with views of the Newstead waterfront. But the coffee was only ok, sitting at the bar as a solo diner meant you got to hear everything the servers had to stay and the highlight from the meal was the tomatoes (which were quite amazing).

Had breakfast at Malt Pier this morning with friends. All dishes were thoroughly enjoyed, we had the cured salmon w asparagus and rye, savoury mince w toast, corn fritters. Also quite a nice location on the river.

Had Mother's day lunch at this restaurant last Sunday. It was a three-courses set lunch with complimentary drinks. As usual, it is expected to be full house on that day but surprisingly foods came in really quick. Services are friendly and proficient. Amuse bouche of Tomato Tea is a good invention, which is so refreshing and kick-start my appetite ready for the coming courses. Chef showed case his culinary skills on every single dish in terms of plating, taste and aroma. Hero of the day is the Shoulder & Loin Sous Vide, where the chef nailed to differentiate the subtle difference in textures between shoulder and loin and both of them were done perfectly juicy particularly matching with the cider gel. Dessert of Mango Lime Brulee also contributed to the success of this excellent lunch set. Overall experience deserves a thumb-up and wish the management all the best and be consistent with their production.

For a place that was much recommended my experience left a rather poor impression.

A couple of friends and I caught up for a quick brunch a few weeks ago. The place was a breeze to find and I have to say this side of newstead I haven't yet explored and was just amazing. Malt pier is decorated quite simply in a small shop front. Unfortunately only 3 or 4 tables had the advantage of the river view as that was just how small the venue is. There was a large black sun shade blocking the rest of the view but I do understand without it it would be quite hot to have brunch out in the full sun.

Food here was I hear a truncated version of malt dining which I've have heard everyone rave about and is definitely on my list. Perhaps we didn't order the right items but what we did have was a let down. I had a steak sandwich. By the time it was brought out to me the bottom layer of bread was soggy. Steak was done well but nothing special. Fries were also quite regular. The calamari salad I felt was bland but perhaps by that point my experience had been coloured by everything else.

Perhaps the biggest let down of the day was the service. After being seated everything went downhill. I'd ordered a Japanese sencha. I assumed it would be sencha. I was wrong. It was just their fancy way of saying green tea. I felt that was a bit misleading and unnecessary. There's nothing wrong with bagged green tea but please don't try to dress it up as something else. The cup the tea came in was dirty. There were tea marks on the outside, the kind that's made when tea is drunk and left to drip on the outside of the cup. I'm sure the cup had been washed. But the stain is a little unappetising to look at. When the waitress came to take our order she didn't seem to answer the questions we asked about the menu. During our meal it must have gotten (unexpectedly?) busier in the store and the manager (I'm assuming) came and asked if he could have the spare chair at our table. This was done in a rushed and brusque manner. Which, I can understand, it's stressful when it gets busy. But I feel this is an unprofessional move for a restaurant of this calibre. Perhaps the worst was when our meals were done, after asking if we'd like dessert and receiving a negative answer the bill was thrown onto the table. Not handed over. Not placed gently. Thrown. A very unsubtle hint for us to get up and get out. There was one other party waiting who had just arrived. And as he was clearing up our table he looked over our heads and said to the waiting party "two minutes".

I have heard friends who said this type of service is not the norm for Malt pier and I am willing to give them another go simply because of the great reviews I've heard. But this type of behaviour was unacceptable and the friends I dined with will certainly never be going back.

I would say that my partner and I are almost regulars here on a Saturday or Sunday morning for coffee and breakfast/brunch. We keep going back for the constantly great food and coffee, friendly service and lovely location - all for a very fair price. It's one of our 'go-to' places when we have visitors in town.

A small group of us recently enjoyed lunch at Malt Pier, and I was kicking myself for not having enjoyed the lunch menu with a glass of sparkling wine earlier!

A really great spot and worth a visit!

Popped in late one weekend a while back and had a very enjoyable time relaxing over lunch in this great riverside position. Food was up to the excellent standard of their city venue. There were a few minor fumbles with the service but these were of no consequence when handled with friendly humour and a great personable attitude. The location is a little hard to find, but one only has this problem on a first visit, and I look forward to more to come.

Went here for a birthday lunch with three other people. Service was lovely and prompt. The food was a bit hit and miss and definitely not as good as their sister restaurant Malt Dining - even though their prices are pretty much on par. I felt like I was paying for the view. I would return, but I won't be rushing back any time soon.

Pretty average... food was tasty enough... I just expected more considering prices were fairly high... and meals were quite small too - I could've done with 2 meals

This place never fails, been here twice now for breakfast and the food, service, atmosphere is exceptional. I'd be back everyday if I could!

Husband and I went to Malt Pier for a Saturday morning breakfast. When we arrived we were seated straight away even though it was quite busy. The atmosphere, design and location of the restaurant are lovely. I had the avocado on toast with two poached eggs. It was the best avo on toast I've had in ages! The rye was nicely toasted, there was a heap of avocado and feta and just enough lemon olive oil and dukkah to give some tang. Husband had the savoury mince with bacon which he was very happy with. The mince was not as heavy and stodgy as some others he has had in the past. We will definitely be going back.

For starters I will say the coffee here is good. Nice & smooth with strength & well poured. We actually managed to score a seat as we didn't have a booking for breakfast & they even accommodated the pooch for us close by. The charming waitress was so helpful. We really enjoyed our breakfast, I had the corn fritters & the partner had an omelet. Everything was spot on & I understand there was wagu beef in the fluffy thinly rolled omelet. Loved the fritters which came with a fruity spicy chutney & haloumi. Big bonus was the waterfront view

Having visited Malt in the CBD a few times we were keen to try this offshoot which isn’t too far from home. We hadn’t booked but arrived before the lunchtime rush. It’s actually a pretty small space, but is nicely done out and an impressive set-up. We both had lunch and a dessert, both were excellent, the staff were helpful and the service good. After our meal we had a few drinks (including some good cocktails) at the bar.

Recommended and will definitely return.

Nice. Went here for lunch the food was great the service impeccable, great atmosphere on the water a hidden gem. The only downfall is the wine list need more variety of wine's too limited, only one of each wine if they extended their wine list and invested in wine fridge it would be perfect. I find that a lot of places don't realize that Brisbane has a very hot climate which spoils red wine or it's served warm not nice.
