After I had my brekkie at the 107 Coffee Terminal, I still looked for another place to top up the caffeine level in my body. Fortunately, this sign on this cafe’s side wall came across my sight so gave it a go.
If I did not go in this cafe, I would never discover such a nice place with dining area set at the back of the cafe. After I ordered my take away coffee, I saw the chef dropped down the cup cakes on the counter, which were just out of the oven. I admitted that I missed them a lot.
When the coffee handed to me, its colorful take away cup was another thing that earned my appreciation.
Should return for a full brekkie after the COVID-19 has been settled.

Lunch here back in February‘19 was the subject of my 500th review. When Phuong Tran and I returned for lunch last week, Owner/Chef Chris was away interstate and the restaurant was running smoothly.

Warmly greeted on arrival, we are promptly seated and provided with cold water and Menus. PT has the Fried Enoki Baos & Mango Passionfruit Frappe and I decide on the Beef Burger and Chips.

We enjoy our lunch here, good fresh food at reasonable prices. Good luck Chris!

I had the vietnamese salad with buttermilk fried chicken and a strawberry thickshake. The salad was simple but delicious (except for a bit of coriander...). The shake reminded me of a classic McDonald’s which is where my love of shakes started.

Oooo this place is good!! Sat out back near a fish pond thingo- there is so much to look at here it really was a wonderful atmosphere.

It was a public holiday so there wasn’t much in the cabinet but it all looked delicious- I like that they make their own sausage rolls etc. I had the eggs Benedict with house cured salmon.. EPIC! The hollandaise was fantastic.

Partner had the mushrooms and potato hash. I couldn’t decide who’s dishes won because they were both so good. I did kind of merge them though- the capsicumy sauce on the mushrooms went so well with my food.

Loved the strawberry lemonade too. Service was nice and prompt.

Will I be back? It’s not a matter of if, but when.

Update- changed rating from 4 to 5 to be fair.

I really like the spacious, homely feel of cafes that are located only a short bus ride away from the CBD/West End area. Came here at around 9:30am on a Thursday morning with a few friends. It was a lot bigger than I thought, with plenty of seating both inside (there were several rooms) and outside. There weren't that many people there at that time, with only a few tables occupied

After some deliberation, I ended up ordering the eggs benedict with smoked salmon ($18.90) and the pot of chai ($5.50) that I shared with my friend, which ended up being about 2-3 cups of chai IIRC, if I remember correctly. It was made from legit chai leaves and not powder, which made it not sweet (which I liked) but the flavour was a bit weak because they had a tea-strainer-type teapot with the leaves, instead of cooking it in a pot or something as I assume places like Three Monkeys do.

The eggs were well cooked, and the salty salmon was a perfect counterpart to the milder taste of the hollandaise, eggs and bread. I also tried some of my friend's spiced pumpkin brekky ($17.90). It was similar to the benedict, with the bacon being the salty counterpart to the pumpkin and eggs. Overall, two nicely balanced, healthy-feeling dishes.

Sassafras is one of those place I've always been meaning to go to, but never quite got around to visiting. Mainly because it's always there - it's like a Paddington institution! So when Chris - chef and owner - invited me to come, I was thrilled at the chance to finally give this place a try.

We visited for lunch on a busy Saturday and the team were so accommodating with our huge pram and room for a high chair. The cafe had a lovely buzz about it, a quirky little house with a beautiful garden space where dogs are welcome.

When we placed our order, we were told there would be a short wait on food. In my mind, this is totally ok when a place is busy, as long as staff mention it upfront when you place your order - nothing worse than expecting food to come out quick and takes forever. We started with beers, chosen from a great craft beer menu, beer-snob husband was very pleased. Our burgers arrived much quicker than we expected which was terrific - the kitchen was really churning out those meals!

My husband chose the burger special - Philly cheesesteak burger with fillet steak, bbq onions, peppers and cheese - with a side of fries. It was great! So much flavour and really, really delicious. His only complaint was the side of chips was too small (a first world problem when you have a three-year-old chip thief sitting next to you!) I chose the vege burger and was NOT disappointed. Mushroom, smoked sesame cheese, roasted peppers, marinated eggplant, halloumi, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and beer and onion jam. It was delicious, really good flavour combo and even my carnivore husband approved. I would say because of the mayo and onion jam, I really couldn't taste the smoked sesame cheese and because parts of the burger were fresh, cold elements, it made some of my burger cold vs the hot halloumi and eggplant. Minor things because all up, it was really tasty. I also loved the sweet potato wedges I had alongside my burger.

Sassafras has been around for ages for a reason. It's a local favourite and rightfully so. The service is friendly, they have great rotating specials and daily deals, a quirky and bright atmosphere and the food is delicious. Thank you so much to Chris and the team for having us, we loved our visit and will no doubt be retuning soon!

I was very happy to check out this café in the Brisbane suburb of Paddington recently. We were made welcome by Laura the friendly server, and were led out to the courtyard. Suddenly it started to spit rain, so we moved to the large bench under a sturdier awning than the tarp we had been sitting under. Laura told us that Chris the owner (who took over in May last year) is planning to update the courtyard with some new umbrellas. (And to be honest, a good going-over of the pavers with a high-pressure gerni would be a fab idea.) It is a very leafy and pleasant space (and we saw a waterdragon), where dogs are welcome too. They even have their own menu which includes doggy treats and puppuccinos.

Like most eating places these days, you order at the counter but as they weren't too busy, Laura came out to help us move tables when the rain came, and took our order then. Mr P. chose the pie of the day - butter chicken - with salad and fries. He said he would never have thought of putting this filling in a pie, but he loved it. He loved the crisp, shortcrust pastry which encased it too. The fries were crunchy and tasty, but his faves were the salads of spiced cauli and sweet potato and snow peas. He said over and over how delicious they were, and how fresh the dressing was!

Mr P. was already over-caffeinated so chose a freshly squeezed, cold-pressed juice of watermelon, pineapple, orange and passionfruit. He really loved the addition of passionfruit as it gave the juice a big hit of tang. I chose from the breakfast menu which goes till 2pm, as I wanted to try the house-cured salmon gravlax. And yes, it was a triumph. Not too salty, not too firm, not too thick, and with a delicious aftertaste. You can choose bacon or avocado as an extra if you wish. Laura told us the hollandaise is house-made also. I am a huge hollandaise fan, and this was a delicious version, though there can never be too much lemon in it for me. The Turkish bread was soft enough to cut and eat - the roof of my mouth has sometimes bled due to the incredibly glassy bread you can find at some cafés. Not a problem here. And the eggs were beautifully runny, just how I like them. I had a sassaffogato before my meal, which was delicious. Like a dessert really, but great anytime - espresso and ice cream and dark chocolate; refreshing and zippy.

We had a really delicious lunch in the very pleasant and calm courtyard. I almost had to drag Mr P. away as he was starting to settle in for the afternoon. What else can I tell you? They are licensed, they use Bear Bones coffee, they have a bar. There is a kids' menu too. They do private events; they are famous for their ricotta hotcakes with house-made honeycomb butter:-) Mr P. is insisting we go back for the chilli corn fritters (him) and the French toast (moi). I feel we may be heading back soon, and bringing friends.

I haven’t been here for many years,Since then the inside is about the same. But now there is an backyard area to eat in, and the old chef is now the owner. This venue is ready for some great times ahead!. On arrival we started with strawberry & pineapple juice and a cold brew, bet you can’t guess who had which 😉. Later on we ordered another juice but watermelon and passionfruit. The juices were fresh and delicious with the watermelon being a favorite of mine, apart from the morning coffee.

Quaint little cafe on Latrobe terrace with a great outdoor area. Food was fantastic and the staff were friendly and helpful. Service was great too however due to covid we’re guessing the table service and the clearing away of glasses/plate staff was limited. I would definitely go again because the food was fabulous and the outdoor ambiance was welcoming and relaxing.

We decided to have an early (around 8.30am) breakfast at Sassafras on a Sunday morning. The facade of the venue as well as the inside decor is very homely, and feels as though you were walking through your neighbour’s house, the indoor seating looked a bit cramped and loud so we opted for backyard seating which was very comfortable and quiet. We were greeted swiftly upon arrival, given seating options as well as food and drinks menus. We ordered drinks first, from a menu with a lot of variety, including juices, smoothies, shakes, non-caffeinated hot drinks and classic coffee options. We picked the cold drip, shot of espresso, and a turmeric latte. All drinks came relatively quickly and were very well made, the cold drip was not bitter, had great flavour, and the turmeric latte had a good amount of spices and heat. Shortly before receiving our drinks we had ordered our food, the menu selection for breakfast was very appetising, and there was a wide range of options of varying dietary restrictions. We noticed there was a specials’ board hanging on the wall, though unfortunately that was not brought to our attention by our server. After much deliberation we finally decided to share two plates: the corn fritters with extra smoked mushrooms and the ricotta hotcakes, with extra banana and maple syrup. The food arrived promptly and piping hot. Everything looked house-made and of great quality, well presented with a good amount on each plate. The corn fritters were quenelled then deep fried, which was a great twist on the usual pancake-style pan fried version, and tasted great, all the flavours paired together on the plate worked impeccably well together. The ricotta hot cakes were some of the best executed we have had in the past, a very rich dish with ricotta throughout the batter mix, the honey butter which topped it all off complemented it perfectly and made for a very filling and gourmand breakfast. By the time we were ready to leave, the venue had become bustling with customers and we were thankful to have come in early. We had an overall great experience at Sassafras, and we would highly recommend it for a delicious breakfast, though be sure to get in early or book your table to avoid crowds on a weekend. Service was super friendly, unfortunately we came at a crowded time so food took a little while to arrive. However the food was delicious and fruit juices were made fresh. Eggs bennys were pipping hot and soba salad was refreshing and a generous portion.
